SEX
"The reign of God can be likened to ten bridesmaids who took their torches and went out to welcome the groom. Five of them were foolish, while the other five were sensible." —Matthew 25:1-2

Online pornography, which has entered the blood stream of even Christian people, trivializes sex. It relegates sex to the physical — a mere game or toy. Therefore, there’s no such thing as a sexual sin. Sexual guilt is supposedly only a cultural hangup. But this is a lie. There’s a lot more to life and sex than the physical. Sexual sin and guilt are objective realities which will not disappear no matter what mind games we play.

God takes sex seriously. “What I say to you is: anyone who looks lustfully at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his thoughts. If your right eye is your trouble, gouge it out” (Mt 5:28-29). He warns us to guard our sexual organs in sanctity and honor (1 Thes 4:4). Sexual sin is the only sin against our own bodies (1 Cor 6:18). “The Lord is an Avenger of all such things” (1 Thes 4:6).

Laws concerning sex are not man-made. “Whoever rejects these instructions rejects, not man, but God” (1 Thes 4:8). “No fornicator, no unclean or lustful person — in effect an idolator — has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with worthless arguments. These are sins that bring God’s wrath down on the disobedient; therefore have nothing to do with them” (Eph 5:5-7). “As for lewd conduct or promiscuousness or lust of any sort, let them not be mentioned among you; your holiness forbids this” (Eph 5:3).

Prayer: Jesus, may I look at sex the way You do.

Promise: "The moral is: keep your eyes open, for you know not the day or the hour." —Mt 25:13

Praise: Samantha, a quadriplegic, never complains about her situation. She constantly radiates the joy of the Lord at work, on the bus, and whenever people stare at her.

PREP SCHOOL
"You must be prepared in the same way." —Matthew 24:44

Since we “cannot know the day [Jesus] is coming” (Mt 24:42), we must prepare to be ready to meet Him today and “settle with” Him (Mt 24:51). The Corinthians showed their preparedness by waiting “for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor 1:7). We must also be prepared for the possibility that He might come back in a short time, for example, in a year. This means we must spread the Word of God with urgency as did St. Paul and the apostles (1 Cor 7:29, 31; Acts 6:4). Our constant preparedness could impact the salvation of thousands.

We must also be prepared for the possibility that Jesus might not return in our lifetime. We must prepare to be faithful and diligent over the long haul, to persevere, suffer, and pray without losing heart (Lk 18:1). We must prepare ourselves, for we will be called to work “a full day in the scorching heat” (Mt 20:12), and then return day after day, year after year to work for Jesus. The solidity of the Church is riding on our constant preparedness.

Work faithfully until the Master returns, whether that is soon or far off (Mt 24:46). “Stay awake, therefore!” (Mt 24:42) Prepare to be prepared.

Prayer: Lord God, You have generously given me so much revelation and warning. May I lovingly spend my life preparing Your way in the wilderness of this world (Mt 3:3).

Promise: "May the Lord increase you and make you overflow with love for one another and for all." —1 Thes 3:12

Praise: David lives as if Jesus were coming back today by doing his everyday activities for God's glory.

"THE WORD OF THE LORD"
"That is why we thank God constantly that in receiving His message from us you took it, not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God at work within you who believe." —1 Thessalonians 2:13

Some of us have been reading the Bible and the teaching on the Eucharistic readings in this book, One Bread, One Body, almost every day for several decades. Many of us have heard God’s Word at Sunday Mass or at other times for twenty, fifty, or even seventy years. Some of us have even read through the Bible. However, the question is not: “How many times have we been through the Bible?” but “How many times has the Bible been through us?” On Judgment Day, we will not be accountable for how much of the Bible we know but for how much of it we have lived. However, we have a much better opportunity to live the Bible if we have tried to know it. Consequently, the words of St. Jerome are true: “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133).

If someone didn’t know you, would they, by observing you, come to the conclusion that you believe that the teaching of the Church, especially as contained in the Bible, is not merely “the word of men, but...truly is, the word of God at work within you who believe”? (1 Thes 2:13) Abide in God’s Word (Jn 8:31), do God’s Word (Jas 1:22), and make any sacrifice to share God’s Word (see 2 Tm 4:2). Only then will our lives proclaim “loud and clear” that the Church’s teaching and the Bible are “the Word of the Lord.”

Prayer: Father, when the lector concludes the reading with the phrase, "The word of the Lord," may my life cry out, "Thanks be to God."

Promise: "We encouraged and pleaded with you to make your lives worthy of the God Who calls you to His kingship and glory." —1 Thes 2:12

Praise: Mark moved into an apartment for seniors. Within a few weeks, he was leading a Bible study for his fellow residents.

JOHN LIVES
"Herod feared John, knowing him to be an upright and holy man." —Mark 6:20

The Spirit has led the Church to celebrate the birthdays of only three people — Jesus, Mary, and St. John the Baptizer. The Church gives St. John this unique attention in recognition of his special and present part in God’s plan of salvation (see Mt 11:11).

John the Baptizer continues to powerfully confront the Herods and Herodiases of today, those trapped in sin, especially sexual sin (Mk 6:18). John’s prophetic ministry continues as he challenges our society to be baptized in repentance (Mk 1:4).

John still prepares the way of the Lord (Mk 1:3). Because John is alive and being used by the Lord, we are excited about this feast day. This day is not just a memorial but an opportunity to experience the reality of repentance and conversion through the ministry of John.

Ask John to pray for you and minister to you. You will see that the Lord is still working through John. St. John the Baptizer, pray for us.

Prayer: Father, send a "John the Baptizer" into my life to change my heart.

Promise: "Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know the whole of it."—Ps 139:4

Praise: St. John the Baptizer rejoiced when people began "flocking to" Jesus instead of to him (Jn 3:26). He responded, "[Jesus] must increase, while I must decrease" (Jn 3:30).

WHAT LOVE MEANS BY LOVE
"We constantly are mindful before our God and Father of the way you are proving your faith, and laboring in love, and showing constancy of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ." —1 Thessalonians 1:3

Jesus, being God, is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). However, love is not necessarily what many people in our culture think it is. “The way we came to understand love was that He laid down His life for us; we too must lay down our lives for our brothers” (1 Jn 3:16). As Dostoyevsky said, “Love in action is a harsh and dreadful thing.” Love is not superficial and selfish but rather is sacrificial, unconditional, all-consuming (see Heb 12:29), crucified, infinite, and mysterious. True love is much more than “a many-splendored thing.”

Because God is Love, He is not only tender but also has wrath (see 1 Thes 1:10) — not as we are angry but in a way unique to God. Because God is Love, He is the just Judge Who will pay us the wages of sin, that is, death and damnation. Because God is Love, He is the Truth (see Jn 14:6). In love, He will, if necessary, call us “frauds” (Mt 23:13, 15), “blind guides” (Mt 23:16), “blind fools” (Mt 23:17), and hypocrites (Mk 7:6). Because God is Love, He died on the cross for us and calls us to be crucified with Him (Gal 2:19).

Let us accept the courage to live in love (Jn 15:9), as the Lord Who is Love means love.

Prayer: Father, consume me in Your love.

Promise: "Our preaching of the gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power; it was carried on in the Holy Spirit and out of complete conviction." —1 Thes 1:5

Praise: St. Augustine wrote, "O Eternal Truth, True Love and Beloved Eternity, You are my God."

"VIVA IL PAPA!"
"I for My part declare to you, you are 'Rock,' and on this rock I will build My Church." —Matthew 16:18

Many Bible teachers have shown their ingenuity in obscuring the meaning of today’s Gospel reading. They try to show that Jesus did not really make Peter the “Rock” on which He built His Church. However, when we read this passage in the original Greek and are conscious that Jesus spoke these words in Aramaic, we have to admit that this passage means what it appears to mean. Jesus founded the Church on St. Peter.

Most people would not be too concerned about Peter leading the Church for a few years after Jesus ascended. However, they rightly realize that this Biblical passage implies Peter’s leadership of the Church throughout its history. Jesus set up a permanent structure where Peter and his successors lead the Church.

Peter’s continuing authority and leadership in the Church is not a problem, but a gift. It promotes unity and protects God’s people from being overwhelmed by confusion. Peter’s successors, the popes, are parts of Christ’s body on whom we can count to proclaim the truth, and to proclaim Who is the Truth (Jn 14:6), even amid deceptions, lies, and propaganda.

We need the pope and thank God for him. Pray for the pope. Listen to him. Find out what he teaches and apply his teachings to your life (see Heb 13:17).

Prayer: Father, I will look to the pope for direction and not do my own thing.

Promise: "Who has known the mind of the Lord?" —Rm 11:34

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who holds "the keys of death and the nether world"! (Rv 1:18)

HUMBLE BE
"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." —Matthew 23:12

Jesus repeatedly commands us to humble ourselves (Mt 23:12). We humble ourselves when we:

  • “do everything and observe everything” rightful authorities tell us, even if these leaders are hypocrites (Mt 23:3),
  • keep secret our works of mercy, if possible (Mt 6:4; 23:5),
  • dress so as not to draw attention to ourselves (Mt 23:5),
  • take the lowest place (Mt 23:6; Lk 14:10),
  • repent and go to Confession,
  • forgive,
  • apologize,
  • wash the feet of other Christians to serve them (Jn 13:14-15),
  • “think humbly of others as superior” to ourselves (Phil 2:3),
  • look “to others’ interests rather than” to our own (Phil 2:4),
  • are “poor in spirit” (Mt 5:3), that is, voluntarily choose to live below our means,
  • empty ourselves (see Phil 2:7),
  • decrease while Jesus increases (Jn 3:30),
  • deny ourselves (Lk 9:23), and
  • take up our cross daily (Lk 9:23).

“Seek justice, seek humility; perhaps you may be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger” (Zep 2:3). “You have been told, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: only to do right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Mi 6:8). Humble yourselves (Mt 23:12).

Prayer: Jesus, let me learn from You to be "gentle and humble of heart" (Mt 11:29).

Promise: "He will be your comfort and the support of your old age." —Ru 4:15

RUTHFULLNESS
"Both Mahlon and Chilion died also, and the woman was left with neither her two sons nor her husband." —Ruth 1:5

Ruth’s husband, father-in-law, and brother-in-law had died. All of these men had moved to Moab to escape death from starvation (Ru 1:1), but they only delayed death for ten years (Ru 1:4).

Ruth swallowed up death in victory (see 1 Cor 15:54) by her faithfulness to Naomi in obedience to God. She reversed the march of death by marrying Boaz, giving birth to Obed, and becoming the great grandmother of David (Ru 4:22). It was from David’s family that Jesus came. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25), the Conqueror of death.

How can we bring down the reign of death? We conquer death by being baptized into Jesus. In this way, we enter into the family of the living God, the Creator and Sustainer of life, and the Victor over death. We live our new life in Baptism by faithful obedience to the Lord.

Ruth prefigures our baptismal victory over death. We defeat death by entering Jesus’ family and living a new life of faithfulness and obedience to Him.

Prayer: Father, make me increasingly aware of being baptized into Jesus (Rm 6:3).

Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind." —Mt 22:37

Praise: St. Louis, king of France, especially delighted in serving the blind. He wished to keep his deeds of mercy secret (Mt 6:4), and the blind were unable to recognize that he was the king.

THE FIG TREE
"Jesus responded: 'Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than that.' " —John 1:50

St. Bartholomew (Nathanael) was prejudiced against Jesus because Jesus came from Nazareth (Jn 1:46). After Jesus mentioned He saw Nathanael under the fig tree, however, Nathanael changed completely, from prejudice to faith. He acknowledged Jesus as “the Son of God” and “the King of Israel” (Jn 1:49). Why was Nathanael so impressed by Jesus’ remark that He saw him under the fig tree? What was Nathanael doing under the fig tree?

No one knows why the fig tree was so significant to Nathanael. Some Bible commentators mention that the fig tree is symbolic of the Israelite nation (see Mk 11:12ff). Thus Jesus’ reference to the fig tree would have special symbolic significance.

Others see Jesus using the supernatural gift of knowledge, as He did with the Samaritan woman at the well (Jn 4:18). Jesus could have been noting a secret sin Nathanael committed under the fig tree (see 1 Cor 14:24-25).

Another possible interpretation is that Nathanael was praying under the fig tree, praying for the coming of the Messiah. Jesus presented Himself as the immediate Answer to Nathanael’s prayer.

On this special feast day, let the Lord speak to you symbolically, prophetically, and prayerfully. You’ll never be the same.

Prayer: Father, may I hear You say a word today that changes my heart.

Promise: "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth." —Ps 145:18

Praise: St. Bartholomew believed Jesus and Jesus promised him great things.

“SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS” (Ps 100:2) - One Bread, One Body, 08/23/2023

"SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS" (Ps 100:2)
"Must I give up?" —Judges 9:9, 11, 13

The olive tree, fig tree, and vine did not wish to be generous. They each said: “Must I give up?” The workers who bore the day’s heat and the full burden were treated fairly, but wanted the master to pay by the hour instead of paying by the day. They were envious because he was generous (Mt 20:15).

God is generous. He answered the question “Must I give up?” by giving up His only Son so that we might have the possibility of repenting, believing, and gaining eternal life (Jn 3:16).

Jesus gave up much in order to rule over us. He gave up eternal joy with His Father. He gave up His freedom on earth, and became a slave (Phil 2:7). Despite all Jesus gave up, humankind responded by saying, “We will not have this Man rule over us” (Lk 19:14).

When disciples of Jesus hold back from leadership and service, the worldly fill the leadership void. Thus the result is selfish or poor leadership. When disciples of Jesus work for a reward rather than for love of Jesus, the work might get done, but will anyone who observes our grumbling service want to give their lives to the Lord?

To serve Jesus, King of the Universe, is worth any sacrifice, even a life spent bearing the heat and burdens (Mt 20:12). Accept Jesus’ rule over you, His way of righteousness (Mt 6:33). “Serve the Lord with gladness” (Ps 100:2). He will provide all that you need (Phil 4:19).

Prayer: Father, knowing that I love and serve You is enough reward for me. Jesus, King of kings, reign supreme in my life.

Promise: "Thus the last shall be first and the first shall be last." —Mt 20:16

Praise: St. Rose of Lima, after years of prayer and penance, reached out to care for the needy, both young and old.

"YOUR KINGDOM COME" (Mt 6:10)
"Then who can be saved?" —Matthew 19:25

Instead of spending our lives focused on accumulating money, why don’t we focus on accumulating the harvest of souls for God?

Instead of spending our lives worrying about paying the bills, why don’t we focus on doing God’s will and letting Him provide for us?

Instead of spending our lives thinking about our health, why don’t we focus on the health of the Body of Christ?

God knows everything we need before we ask Him (Mt 6:8). He loves us and provides for us as a Father provides for His beloved children (Mt 6:30). He is not a stingy God but a generous God. He demands that we bear fruit for His kingdom (Jn 15:16). Moreover, He is bound by His own justice to provide for the needs of those who spend their lives working for His sake (see 1 Cor 9:8-11; Heb 6:10).

Instead of focusing on our earthly needs during the seventy or eighty years we spend on this earth (Ps 90:10), why don’t we focus on eternity and where we and many thousands of others will spend it? “Seek first His kingship over you, His way of holiness, and all these things will be given you besides” (Mt 6:33).

Prayer: Father, reap a harvest of faith through me.

Promise: "Everyone who has given up home, brothers or sisters, father or mother, wife or children or property for My sake will receive many times as much and inherit everlasting life." —Mt 19:29

Praise: The Lord raised Mary from being a humble teenager to reign with Him as Queen of heaven and earth.

WILL WE CHOOSE TO LOSE?
"If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."—Matthew 19:17

The Lord, in His wisdom, permits us to experience the consequences of our choices and some of the wages of our sins (Rm 6:23). He knows that we have the possibility of learning life-lessons from our choices, both good and bad.

The Israelites chose to reject God, and He permitted them to be overrun and dominated by their enemies (Jgs 2:14ff). Amidst the pain of these adverse consequences, they cried to the Lord, Who had mercy on them and sent strong leaders to deliver them (Jgs 2:18). Yet they did not persist in keeping the commandments and repeatedly slipped back into idolatry (Jgs 2:19).

The rich young man in today’s Gospel passage had been making good choices until he encountered Jesus. When he heard Jesus’ answer to his question, this man could not choose Jesus’ way. As a consequence, his “face fell” (in the literal Greek of Mt 19:22) and he sadly left Jesus.

Choosing against the Lord does not bring fulfillment; in so doing, we choose against all we have been created to be. In His mercy, God can work all things together for the good for those who love Him (Rm 8:28). But do we love Him if we do not obey His commands? (see Jn 14:23-24; 15:10)

In the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5).

Prayer: Jesus, hold me tight until I trust fully in Your love. With Your consuming love, melt my fear of losing my life (Lk 9:24; Heb 2:15).

Promise: "Come back and follow Me." —Mt 19:21

Praise: Pope St. Pius X promoted holiness by encouraging frequent reception of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

ARE YOU ABLE TO SERVE THE LORD?
"You may not be able to serve the Lord, for He is a holy God." —Joshua 24:19

When asked by Joshua to be faithful to God, the Israelites three times said they would “serve the Lord” (Jos 24:18, 21, 24). St. Peter also promised three times to serve Jesus by feeding His sheep (Jn 21:15, 16, 17).

For most of us, at our Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, and wedding, we promised in some way to serve the Lord. We said “Yes,” and we meant it as best as we could at the time. On our wedding day, we say, “Yes,” we will be open to conceiving children and letting the children come to Jesus by raising them in the faith of the Church (see Mt 19:14).

Joshua provides a reality check. He doesn’t believe a “Yes” so readily. He observes that it is not easy to serve the Lord. God is holy, and we are frequently pressured by the cares and worries of this world (Mk 4:19). Jesus likewise provides a reality check. He observes that not everyone who says “Yes” to the Father actually does His will (Mt 21:28-32).

The Lord delights in commitment, obedience, and surrender. However, there is a cost to serving the Lord. To say “Yes” to Him, we must often say “No” to ourselves. Follow Him, deny yourself, and persevere in following Him to the very end (Lk 21:19).

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to let my "Yes" truly mean "Yes" (Mt 5:37; Jas 5:12).

Promise: "Let the children come to Me. Do not hinder them. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these." —Mt 19:14

JESUS IS GOD!
"I now say to you, whoever divorces his wife (lewd conduct is a separate case) and marries another commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery." —Matthew 19:9

Because Jesus is God:

  • His death on the cross has saved all people from their sins (see Ti 2:14).
  • He has risen from the dead and will raise us from the dead (see Rm 1:4).
  • He will come again to take us with Him (Jn 14:3).
  • He has superseded the Old Testament and has forbidden divorce (Mt 19:6-9).
  • He gives those celibate for God’s kingdom the power to live on earth as the angels live in heaven (Lk 20:34-36; Mt 19:12).
  • He can live in us and make it possible for us to live in Him (see Jn 6:56).
  • He can change bread and wine into His Body and Blood, and then command us to receive His Body and Blood (Mt 26:26-28).
  • We must totally give our lives to Him, live for Him rather than ourselves (2 Cor 5:15), and worship Him.
  • We should risk our lives to be Jesus’ witnesses (Acts 1:8).

•        We are awed to live in the mystery of Jesus’ divinity, and rejoice that God is One and is Trinity, that is, three Persons in one God.

JESUS TEACHES MORE ON FORGIVENESS
"Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?" —Matthew 18:21, RSV-CE

Today, Jesus teaches us many things about forgiveness:

1)      Forgiveness pertains only to sins. We forgive sins; we overlook faults, shortcomings, and weaknesses (Sir 28:7; Prv 19:11).

2)      By God’s grace, we must forgive 70 x 7, that is, indefinitely (Mt 18:22).

3)      God’s kingdom is “like” forgiveness (Mt 18:23). Forgiving is essential in God’s plan.

4)      The debt of our sins is very great (see Mt 18:24). God’s forgiving us of this debt should lead us to forgive others (Mt 18:33).

5)      When we are not forgiving, we make our lives slavery, a prison, and torture (Mt 18:25, 30, 34).

6)      Forgiveness can be feigned. Fake forgiveness is expressed only in externals. We must forgive from our hearts (Mt 18:35).

Right now, by the Lord’s grace, make the decision to forgive everyone for every sin committed against you. Forgive by God’s standards.

Prayer: "Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing" (Lk 23:34).

Promise: "Come here and listen to the words of the Lord, your God." —Jos 3:9

WELL-VERSED?
"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault." —Matthew 18:15, RSV-CE

Baptized Christians are our brothers and sisters, whether or not we realize this. If they commit a sin against us, we must forgive and correct them, “but keep it between the two” of us (Mt 18:15). Lamentably, although this first step in reconciliation works often, it is frequently not attempted.

Notice this command applies to brothers and sisters in Christ, not to unbaptized people. We must forgive, pray for (1 Jn 5:16), and evangelize the unbaptized, but we may not always be called to correct them. Furthermore, we are to correct our brothers and sisters when they sin, not when we feel hurt because we have judged their motives or taken offense. We should “overlook faults” (Sir 28:7; Prv 19:11), weaknesses, and shortcomings but forgive sins.

Finally, we must never mention (even to our spouses) that a brother or sister has sinned against us. If we have sinned by gossiping, we must repent. If we obey Matthew 18:15, wars will be prevented, marriages reconciled, families restored, and peace established. Obeying this one verse will change the world. Do Matthew 18:15.

Prayer: Father, by Your grace I will be a minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18).

Promise: "Since then no prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He had no equal in all the signs and wonders the Lord sent him to perform." —Dt 34:10-11

FEET READY TO SERVE
"A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet…" —Revelation 12:1

Let’s follow Mary’s footprints through her lifetime. She used her feet to stay still in listening to the angel Gabriel rather than fleeing from the will of God. Her feet hastened nearly ninety miles to serve her pregnant kinswoman Elizabeth (Lk 1:39), and likewise to Egypt and back to save Jesus from assassination (Mt 2:14, 21). For over thirty years, Mary’s feet aided her in feeding and raising Jesus. Her feet eventually carried her to Calvary (Jn 19:25). There, at the cross with Jesus, God placed “all things under His feet” (1 Cor 15:27).

Despite intense grief after Jesus’ crucifixion, Mary set her footsteps toward the upper room to minister peace, forgiveness, restoration, and discipling to the apostles and disciples during the time between Jesus’ Resurrection and Pentecost (Acts 1:14). Thus the Church was born.

“Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin…was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 966). The moon is under her feet (Rv 12:1). As Queen of Heaven and Earth, her feet are standing at the right hand of King Jesus (see Ps 45:10).

Mary’s “beautiful” feet have been used to bring good news to the world (see Is 52:7). On this feast of the Assumption, may our feet dance with “gladness and joy” (Ps 45:16) as we follow the footsteps of Mary, who follows those of Jesus (Lk 9:23).

Prayer: Father, may my feet serve You as readily as did Mary's.

Promise: "Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under His feet." —1 Cor 15:25

Praise: "God Who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is His name" (Lk 1:49).

CROSS-WORDS
"The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men who will put Him to death." —Matthew 17:22-23

Jesus spoke again to His disciples of His cross and Resurrection. “At these words they were overwhelmed with grief” (Mt 17:23). The first time Jesus had broached the subject of the cross, Peter brushed it off, and “Jesus turned on Peter and said, ‘Get out of My sight, you satan!’ ” (Mt 16:23) After the third time Jesus brought up the cross, James, John, and their mother asked for a promotion in Christ’s kingdom (Mt 20:18-21). The message of the cross did not register at all. Christ crucified continues to be “a stumbling block to Jews, and an absurdity to Gentiles” (1 Cor 1:23).

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Heb 13:8). He continues to bring up His favorite subject, the cross. Do we refuse to listen, or do we boast in the cross? (Gal 6:14) Will we crucify our “flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal 5:24), or will we continue “crucifying the Son of God for [ourselves]and holding Him up to contempt”? (Heb 6:6) Through the cross, will we be crucified to the world and the world to us? (Gal 6:14) Will we take up the daily cross of Gospel poverty, penance and sacrifice, an austere lifestyle, fasting, forgiveness, evangelization, and Christian community? (see Lk 9:23) Let us live the way of the cross and pray with St. Francis of Assisi: “We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.”

Prayer: Father, may I stay "near the cross" (Jn 19:25).

Promise: "What does the Lord, your God, ask of you but to fear the Lord, your God, and follow His ways exactly, to love and serve the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord which I enjoin on you today for your own good?" —Dt 10:12-13

Praise: St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe voluntarily gave himself up to death for the sake of saving the life of a fellow prisoner.

JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU
"It is I." —Matthew 14:27

By walking on the sea, Jesus manifested Himself to His apostles. They were captivated, even “terrified,” by the miraculous sight of a person walking on the water (Mt 14:25-26). Jesus spoke to the apostles, revealing His divine identity by saying “It is I” (Mt 14:27; see also Ex 3:14; Jn 8:58).

When St. Peter encountered Jesus showing His sovereignty over the chaos of the sea, he said to Jesus, “Lord, if it is really You, tell me to come to You” (Mt 14:28). Jesus then responded: “Come!” (Mt 14:29)

Simon Peter spoke words that Jesus would surely like to hear coming from our own lips. Have you ever felt that the Lord was calling you in a certain direction, but you weren’t sure if it was truly Him? Jesus would surely like us to respond as Simon Peter, “Lord, if this is truly Your leading, tell me clearly.” Jesus answers, “Come to Me” (Mt 11:28; Mt 14:29).

The next step is ours. We may falter and begin to sink in our troubles. Imitate Simon Peter by crying out to Jesus, “Lord, save me!” (Mt 14:30) Jesus may seem far away, but, as you cry out to Him, immediately His arm is there to lift you up (Mt 14:31). “Trust in Him at all times” (Ps 62:9).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me water-walking faith. Jesus, I trust in You.

Promise: "The Lord Himself will give His benefits; our land shall yield its increase." —Ps 85:13

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who gives us life by His death!

FAITH MATTERS
"The disciples approached Jesus at that point and asked Him privately, 'Why could we not expel it?' 'Because you have so little trust.' " —Matthew 17:19-20

Jesus’ disciples could have freed a family from a demon and misery — if the disciples had possessed greater faith. There might be many bad situations in our lives which could have been transformed years ago if we had faith, even the size of a mustard seed (Mt 17:20).

It is obviously wrong to tell others that they are sick or have problems because of their lack of faith. We cannot determine the degree of others’ faith. Moreover, some of our sufferings are opportunities to enter into the mystery of Christ’s cross (see Phil 3:10). These sufferings should not be removed, but embraced.

Nevertheless, it is true that faith and the lack of it make a great difference. Not all mountains of suffering are movable, but some are (Mt 17:20). Jesus often attributes healing to the faith of the sick person (see Mt 9:22) or of his or her friends (see Mt 9:2). We should be honest enough to cry out to the Lord: “I do believe! Help my lack of trust!” (Mk 9:24)

Prayer: Father, "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5).

Promise: "Nothing would be impossible for you." —Mt 17:20

Praise: St. Jane Frances de Chantal founded the order of the Visitation of Holy Mary for women rejected by other orders.

RAGS TO RUINS?
"What profit would a man show if he were to gain the whole world and destroy himself in the process?" —Matthew 16:26

When Jesus spoke the above words, He was not simply speaking rhetorically. Jesus was actually tempted by Satan with an apparent opportunity to gain the whole world (see Mt 4:8-9). Jesus knew the lure of the temptation to gain the whole world, yet He overcame the world (see Jn 16:33).

Today’s ubiquitous lotteries make it possible for even the poorest person to potentially “gain the whole world.” A person doesn’t have to win the lottery to “destroy himself.” He or she only has to want to gain it. “Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and a trap. They are letting themselves be captured by foolish and harmful desires which drag men down to ruin and destruction. The love of money is the root of all evil. Some men in their passion for it have strayed from the faith, and have come to grief amid great pain” (1 Tm 6:9-10).

That’s why the cross is the wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:21-24ff). Carrying your cross is totally incompatible with gaining the whole world (see Mt 6:24). Taking up your cross involves self-denial. Without dying to self, you’ll run from the cross as did the apostles on Good Friday (see Mk 14:50). Follow in Jesus’ footsteps (Mt 16:24) and take up your cross. Overcome the temptations of the devil and the glamour of evil.

Prayer: Father, may I not even accommodate thoughts of riches, power, or comfort. Grant that I would desire the cross of Christ. May I never be complacent towards the lure of riches and power.

Promise: "All this you were allowed to see that you might know the Lord is God and there is no other." —Dt 4:35

Praise: St. Clare joyfully gave up her privileged lifestyle for a life of prayer and service for her Beloved.

ALMSGIVING AND ALL-GIVING
"I solemnly assure you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit." —John 12:24

There is “giving,” of which Jesus Himself said: “There is more happiness in giving than receiving” (Acts 20:35). Then there is giving bountifully (2 Cor 9:6) and cheerfully, “for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor 9:7). Next, there is “giving till it hurts,” that is, sacrificially. Finally, there is “giving all,” everything we have to live on (see Lk 21:4).

This last kind of giving is the giving:

  • done by Jesus on the cross and by the martyrs,
  • called for by the first commandment, that is, loving God with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds, and all our strength (Lk 10:27),
  • by which we receive God’s kingdom (Mt 13:44-46),
  • in which we by faith possess everlasting life (see Mt 19:16, 21),
  • which is multipliable (see e.g. Mt 14:17ff), and
  • which is dying to self and bears much fruit (Jn 12:24).

For love of Jesus crucified, give all.

Prayer: Father, may I not diminish the meaning of my life by giving less than "all."

Promise: "God can multiply His favors among you so that you may always have enough of everything." —2 Cor 9:8

Praise: Before he was martyred, St. Lawrence said: "I rejoice greatly because I have been considered worthy to be a sacrificial victim for Christ."

"THE WAGES OF SIN IS _____" (Rm 6:23)
"Forty years shall you suffer for your crimes: one year for each day. Thus you will realize what it means to oppose Me." —Numbers 14:34

Sin is so bad that when Adam and Eve sinned, human nature became wounded and fallen from that moment till the end of the world.

Sin is so bad that the Israelites were punished with forty years of wandering in a desert because they sinned by refusing to enter the promised land (Nm 14:34).

Sin is so bad that 70,000 people died in a three-day pestilence because of one of David’s sins (2 Sm 24:15).

Sin is so bad that millions of innocent people, even children, suffer terribly because of the sins of others (see Mt 15:22).

Sin is so bad that we brutally tortured, crucified, and murdered Jesus by our sins (see Acts 3:15).

Sin is the worst of all evils and the cause of all evils. There would be no way to be freed from sin but for the blood of Jesus shed for us on Calvary.

Therefore, repent of sins, go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and encourage others to do the same.

Prayer: Father, I thank You forever for sending Jesus to save me from sin (see 1 Tm 1:15).

Promise: "Jesus then said in reply, 'Woman, you have great faith! Your wish will come to pass.' That very moment her daughter got better." —Mt 15:28

Praise: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, martyr of Auschwitz, wrote, "There is no chance and every detail has been mapped out in God's divine providence."
