ABBA-POWER
"I solemnly assure you, the man who has faith in Me will do the works I do, and greater far than these." —John 14:12

The Lord promises us that we will do far greater works than He did (Jn 14:12). We know of Jesus raising people from the dead, healing countless sick people, driving out legions of demons, walking on water, multiplying the loaves and fish, transforming the most hardened hearts, etc. How can we do these things? How can we surpass these works?

The answer Jesus gave to these questions is: “Because I go to the Father” (Jn 14:12). Because of Jesus’ relationship with the Father and because of our relationship with the Father through Him, we can do far greater works than Jesus did. When Jesus went to the Father, then the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit to cry out in our hearts “Abba,” “Father” (Gal 4:6; Rm 8:15). When by the Holy Spirit we are secure in our Father’s love, by faith we can move mountains (Mt 17:20) that Jesus never moved during His public ministry. We can bring down the strongholds that have been raised up in opposition to Christ (2 Cor 10:4). We can lead hundreds and thousands into His kingdom.

However, only those secure in the Father’s love believe this and do it. Cry out “Abba,” do far greater works than Jesus did, and change the world (Jn 14:12).

Prayer: Abba...

Promise: "The disciples could not but be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit." —Acts 13:52

Praise: "Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being. Do it for the Lord rather than for men" (Col 3:23). St. Joseph, pray for us who labor.

GOING HOME - One Bread, One Body, 04/30/2021

John 14:1-6

GOING HOME
"I am indeed going to prepare a place for you, and then I shall come back to take you with Me, that where I am you also may be." —John 14:3

The great “I Am” (Ex 3:14) — the awesome Creator of the world, Who has created universes and quasars millions of light-years away — God Himself, wanted to adopt “little old you.”

It seems unbelievable, but it’s true. He paid an inestimable price for you by sending His only begotten Son to give His life. By faith, you accepted God’s adoption of you. Your Father God loved, fed, protected, healed, guided, and provided for you. He was always there. Because the Father lived in heaven, you could never see Him, but the joy of your life was to talk to Him and see His wondrous works. The Spirit cried out in you, “Abba!” (Gal 4:6) Your deepest desire was to someday go home and see Abba. However, that was impossible, but nothing’s impossible for Jesus. He’s the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through Him (Jn 14:6). Everyone who comes through Him gets to go home and see Abba. Then He “shall wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain, for the former world has passed away” (Rv 21:4).

Thank You, Father, for adopting me. Thank You, Jesus, for being the Way home. Thank You, Spirit, for crying out in my heart, “Abba.”

Prayer: Abba, I love You.

Promise: "God raised Him from the dead, and for many days thereafter Jesus appeared to those who had come up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are His witnesses now before the people." —Acts 13:30-31

Praise: Pope St. Pius V led church reform at the time of the Protestant Reformation. He challenged cardinals to abandon their often luxurious lifestyle and mandated bishops reside within their diocese.

EXTEMPORANEOUS - One Bread, One Body, 04/29/2021

Thursday, April 29, 2021, St. Catherine of Siena

Acts 13:13-25
Psalm 89:2-3, 21-22, 25, 27
John 13:16-20

EXTEMPORANEOUS
" 'Brothers, if you have any exhortation to address to the people, please speak up.' So Paul arose, motioned to them for silence, and began." —Acts 13:15-16

Imagine visiting a church. You’re a total stranger. After the reading of the Scriptures, everyone sits down. Suddenly the priest or minister looks at you and asks if you would give the sermon. What would you do?

This happened to St. Paul when he visited the synagogue of Antioch in Pisidia. When Paul was put on the spot, he was ready. He even gave the assembly a tour through the history of the chosen people (Acts 13:16ff). Later, Paul was ready to witness to the jailer during a jailbreak (Acts 16:29ff). He witnessed about Jesus even after he suffered shipwreck and was bitten by a snake (Acts 27:43—28:4ff). Even Peter, who froze when a servant girl asked him about Jesus, changed dramatically and later could write: “Should anyone ask you the reason for this hope of yours, be ever ready to reply” (1 Pt 3:15).

When we make the act of faith and open our mouths, the Spirit puts courage in our hearts, revelations into our minds, and words on our lips. Jesus promised: “When they hand you over, do not worry about what you will say or how you will say it. When the hour comes, you will be given what you are to say. You yourselves will not be the speakers; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you” (Mt 10:19-20).

Prayer: Jesus, in the next forty-eight hours, may I break new ground and talk about You to a person I never could before.

Promise: "I solemnly assure you, no slave is greater than his master." —Jn 13:16

Praise: In Catherine's short life of 33 years, she made clear her deep devotion to Christ. In 1970, Pope St. Paul VI named her a Doctor of the Church. Three priests were assigned to keep up with those she led to repent.

AN OPEN-BOOK TEST - One Bread, One Body, 04/28/2021

St. Louis Mary de Montfort

Acts 12:24—13:5
Psalm 67:2-3, 5-6, 8
John 12:44-50

AN OPEN-BOOK TEST
"If anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I am not the one to condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save it. Whoever rejects Me and does not accept My words already has his judge, namely the word I have spoken — it is that which will condemn him on the last day." —John 12:47-48

“If anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I am not the one to condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save it. Whoever rejects Me and does not accept My words already has his judge, namely the word I have spoken — it is that which will condemn him on the last day.” —John 12:47-48

Jesus clearly reveals that the Word of God will be the standard by which we are judged “on the last day” (Jn 12:48). It’s like those times in school when the teacher gave us an open-book test. The answers were all there in the book. An open-book test should be the easiest type of test — if we had taken the time to learn the material revealed in the textbook. Jesus, the “Teacher” (Mt 19:16), has blessed us by revealing to us in advance the answers for the test on the last day. It’s all in the Good Book.

When you were in school, you also had other study guides. One of the most common guides was called the Cliffs Notes. The best study guide for the final test is the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which was revealed to the Church in advance of the test by the Holy Spirit. There are many hundreds of Scripture verses quoted in the Catechism. So the question becomes: Do you know the Word of God? How well have you tried to know it? Will you be surprised by the test on the last day?

Prayer: Father, I will dedicate the rest of my life to helping as many as possible be ready to know, love, and serve You in this life and be happy with You in the next. May the Word of the Lord "spread and increase" because of my love for You (Acts 12:24).

Promise: "I have come to the world as its Light, to keep anyone who believes in Me from remaining in the dark." —Jn 12:46

Praise: Over the past three centuries, St. Louis de Montfort has inspired faithful Catholics to trust Our Lady's intercessory role. His book, True Devotion to Mary, remains a classic.

ETERNAL LIFE IS... - One Bread, One Body, 04/27/2021

John 10:22-30

ETERNAL LIFE IS...
"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish." —John 10:28

Jesus promised to give us eternal life, that is, the quality of life that is lived in heaven forever. Jesus kept His promise when He died on the cross and rose from the dead. We received His gift of eternal life when we were baptized. We live eternal life when we give our lives to Jesus and love Him with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds, and all our strength (see Lk 10:27).

By faith, are we living eternal life right now? If we’re not living it on earth before our deaths, why should we expect to live it in heaven after our deaths? If we don’t choose to give our lives to Jesus now, why would we want to be with Him forever?

Eternal life is not just a happy, everlasting life; it is primarily a life of total love for Life Himself, Jesus our Lord (Jn 14:6; 11:25). “Eternal life is this: to know You, the only true God, and Him Whom You have sent, Jesus Christ” (Jn 17:3). Eternal life is knowing Jesus personally and deeply. Eternal life is living in God which is living in love, for God is love (1 Jn 4:16). “The testimony is this: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever possesses the Son possesses life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not possess life” (1 Jn 5:11-12). Live totally for Jesus. Accept eternal life.

Prayer: Father, may I let You live in me so I may share in Your divine life (see 2 Pt 1:4).

Promise: "No one shall snatch [My sheep] out of My hand." —Jn 10:28

Praise: The occasion of his daughter's First Communion helped Thomas recommit his own life to the Most Blessed Sacrament.

THE THROUGH-WAY
"My solemn word is this: I am the Sheepgate." —John 10:7

Jesus is not only the Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11); He is also the Lamb of God (Jn 1:29) and even the Sheepgate. Don’t marry anyone who tries to enter your life apart from Jesus through mere friendship or sexual attraction. Don’t let people into your life just because of business or money. TV personalities, athletes, and entertainers have a major influence in millions of people’s lives, but have they entered through the Sheepgate, Jesus? “Whoever does not enter the sheepfold through the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a marauder” (Jn 10:1).

Not only are others trying to enter our lives, but we are entering their lives and worlds. Jesus promises: “I am the Gate. Whoever enters through Me will be safe. He will go in and out, and find pasture” (Jn 10:9). Whatever you get into, make sure it’s Jesus’ idea. Live in, with, and through Jesus. Then you will be safe rather than hurt, fed rather than drained. If we enter things through our pride, desires, intellect, or selfishness, we will be ripped off, slaughtered, and destroyed (Jn 10:10). If we make Jesus our only Gate, our only Way (Jn 14:6), we will have the fullness of life (Jn 10:10). Jesus is the Through-Way.

Prayer: Father, draw me so close to Your Son Jesus that nothing I desire would ever distract me from His love.

Promise: "God has granted life-giving repentance even to the Gentiles." —Acts 11:18

Praise: Every day, Rosemary prays that someone in her family will be called to the religious life.

ECSTASY
"I am the Good Shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me in the same way that the Father knows Me and I know the Father." —John 10:14-15

The Bible promises we can know Jesus, that is, have a personal relationship with Him, in the same way that the heavenly Father and God the Son have a personal relationship. By God’s grace, we can become “sharers of the divine nature” (2 Pt 1:4) and have a divine relationship with Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

In a divine relationship, there is unity and love that we as human beings can’t even imagine (Eph 3:20). In fact, we can’t even ask for it since no human words can express this relationship. St. Paul exclaimed he “was snatched up to Paradise to hear words which cannot be uttered, words which no man may speak” (2 Cor 12:4). He could only say: “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor 2:9). We can’t express it in words. We can only say there’s so much more.

“Dearly beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall later be has not yet come to light. We know that when it comes to light we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3:2). Let God love and surprise you. You’ve already had the agony; let the Lord give you ecstasy with Him. Ecstasy is not only for exceptional saints but for all those who let God love them. Ecstasy is for you.

Prayer: Jesus, I adore You.

Promise: "This Jesus is 'the Stone rejected by you the builders Which has become the Cornerstone.' There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved." —Acts 4:11-12

Praise: "That is why Christ died and came to life again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living" (Rm 14:9). Praise the resurrected Jesus!

THE COMPANY LINE
"From this time on, many of His disciples broke away and would not remain in His company any longer." —John 6:66

What on earth could Jesus have possibly said that would result in many of His disciples refusing to remain in His company? He said something “hard to endure” and take seriously (Jn 6:60):

  • “I Myself am the living bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world” (Jn 6:51).
  • “If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you” (Jn 6:53).
  • “He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up on the last day” (Jn 6:54).
  • “My flesh is real food and My blood real drink. The man who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in Him” (Jn 6:55-56).
  • “Just as the Father Who has life sent Me and I have life because of the Father, so the man who feeds on Me will have life because of Me” (Jn 6:57).
  • “The man who feeds on this bread will live forever” (Jn 6:58).

Do these hard words of Jesus “shake your faith”? (Jn 6:61) They’re supposed to. Therefore, Jesus refused to recant or modify them just to keep the group together. After the disbelieving disciples left, Jesus then asked those who remained with Him, “Do you want to leave Me too?” (Jn 6:67) How will you answer Jesus?

Prayer: Jesus, so many have refused to remain with You. Use me to restore many thousands to You.

Promise: "Jesus Christ cures you!" —Acts 9:34

Praise: St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen was nicknamed "the poor man's lawyer." His prayer was that he never be lukewarm in his fidelity to Jesus.

PRAYING UP A STORM - One Bread, One Body, 04/23/2021

PRAYING UP A STORM
"He is there praying." —Acts 9:12

The early Church was a praying Church. The Church was born at Pentecost after a nine-day gestation period of prayer (see Acts 1:14). After Pentecost, the Church devoted itself to prayer (Acts 2:42). So powerful were the Church’s prayers that sometimes the building where the Church prayed shook (Acts 4:31). The apostles concentrated on prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4). The early Church was a praying Church.

The immediate results of the Church’s prayers were mixed. The number of disciples “enormously increased” (Acts 6:7), but persecution against the Church likewise increased. The more the Church prayed, the better and the worse it got. Finally, Stephen, one of the first deacons, was murdered, martyred, stoned to death. How’s that for an answer to prayer? Nonetheless, the Church kept praying. Soon, a Samaritan town came to Christ (Acts 8:14), an Ethiopian was baptized and took the Gospel to the ends of the earth (Acts 8:38ff), and Saul, the dreaded persecutor of the Church, was baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:17-18).

Prayer changes things. It can change opposition into persecution and murder, and persecution and murder into the evangelization of the world. In this Easter season, pray as if your life and the salvation of others depended on it.

Prayer: Father, may I pray up a storm of persecution and evangelization.

Promise: "Let Me solemnly assure you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you." —Jn 6:53

Praise: Many pious traditions weave an inspiring story of St. George's heroics. The Church declares for certain his charity, virtue and martyrdom. He is the patron saint of England.

There is currently a best-selling series of computer training books which all have titles ending with “For Dummies.” These books contain simple step-by-step directions. They have great popular appeal, because many people feel the subjects of the books  are overwhelming and that they are not smart enough to understand them. Simple, specific directions are exactly what overwhelmed people are looking for. Likewise, the Holy Spirit used this same approach with Philip, the deacon, in today’s first reading.

The Holy Spirit directed Philip step-by-step in evangelizing, giving him specific, achievable directions. Anyone can head south down a specific road and catch up with a carriage (Acts 8:26, 29-30). When Philip reached the carriage, all he had to do was follow the eunuch’s lead and answer his questions. The eunuch made it easy on Philip by orchestrating his own Baptism. All Philip had to do was hear simple directions and obey them. Because he did, the Gospel was carried to the continent of Africa.

The task of evangelizing a neighborhood, town, or nation can seem overwhelming. If we focus on our own abilities, it is overwhelming. However, the Holy Spirit has everything planned. All we need to do is listen to the Spirit and be ready and willing to follow His directions.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, may I focus on You and not on myself.

Promise: "I Myself am the Living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world." —Jn 6:51

Praise: "I Myself am the Living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world." —Jn 6:51

RISING EXPECTATIONS - One Bread, One Body, 04/21/2021

RISING EXPECTATIONS
"Philip, for example, went down to the town of Samaria and there proclaimed the Messiah." —Acts 8:5

Philip the deacon is an Easter saint. He shows us that because of the risen Christ:

  • whole cities can be converted (Acts 8:14ff; see also Acts 9:35, 42),
  • even the “least likely” people, like Samaritans, will enter God’s kingdom,
  • persecuting the Church will build it up, and
  • every member of the family not only can keep the faith, but also lead in spreading the Gospel (see Acts 21:8-9).

The risen Christ transforms whole cities, Samaritans, a persecuted Church, the members of our families, and ourselves.

The life of Philip the deacon encourages us to believe that the risen Christ can do more than we can ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20). How many Christians have prayed for whole cities to come to Christ and expected it to happen? Do we believe Samaritans, Sauls, enemies, persecutors, abortionists, and atheists will be converted to the Lord? Do we pray for the privilege of being persecuted for Jesus? (see Acts 5:41; Phil 1:29) How many Christian parents are merely hoping to get their adult children back in Church? They can’t imagine their children or themselves prophesying, healing, preaching, teaching, or leading. Sometimes in our prayer, we don’t seem to be aware of Jesus’ Resurrection and its implications. The life of Philip opens us to a new dimension of life — risen life.

Prayer: Father, because of this Easter season may I never pray the same.

Promise: "No one who comes will I ever reject." —Jn 6:37

Praise: St. Anselm became one of the church's greatest theologians. He received the title "Father of Scholasticism." He never backed away from conflict over his principles. Named a Doctor of the Church, his scholarly writings remain influential today.

How to Use Berkey Water Filter

Travel Berkey

Fluoride is a treatment that has been banned in many European nations. I didn't notice how completely different faucet water could possibly be till I moved to our new dwelling. I grew up in California and lived there till i was 28. We packed up the kids and moved to the sunshine state of Florida and have settled into a small quiet town called Brooksville. The city I live in has chlorine and fluoride added to the water. At my last dentist appointment, I was given a fluoride therapy. So what's going on? Something didn't taste right or odor right, so I started investigating like Veronica Mars. I don't have a problem with the dentist treating my teeth with fluoride, actually, I'm an enormous advocate for healthy teeth and gums. It's loopy! Whereas the Environmental Safety Agency regulates municipal faucet water and lots of stay within the rules, it doesn't mean you might be just drinking H20. I can actually scent the chlorine when we run the water from the faucet.

For somebody with weaker palms, the system could be primed by stepping very rigorously on the middle of the bottle till water got here out the straw. This, in turn, reduces the amount of suction needed to drink from the straw. The bottle must first be "primed" earlier than utilizing, which amounts to squeezing the bottle till water comes out the top. The Berkey is easy for me to make use of. When the bottle was full, it was doable to squeeze filtered water out of the straw. The bottle is delicate and flexible. The good news is: You possibly can filter water for younger kids or old individuals who couldn't muster sufficient suction power to operate different filter bottles. The bottle is definitely secured, because of the ring built into the highest, to nearly anything. You possibly can fill different bottles with filtered water in this fashion, however it would be an extended, laborious course of. This permits the consumer to squeeze and produce extra inner stress. It could possibly be carried by the top, or have a carabineer or piece of cord threaded via it. I had no bother performing this operation.

WHO WILL DIE?
"Those who listened to his words were stung to the heart." —Acts 7:54

At the first Christian Pentecost, many who heard St. Peter preach were cut to the heart by his words and the convicting power of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 2:37). Three thousand of them repented, were baptized, and received the Holy Spirit (see Acts 2:38, 41).

After St. Stephen preached, the people hearing him were cut to the heart (see Acts 7:54). Nevertheless, they did not repent. Rather, “they ground their teeth in anger at” Stephen (Acts 7:54). “The onlookers were shouting aloud, holding their hands over their ears as they did so. Then they rushed at him as one man, dragged him out of the city, and began to stone him” (Acts 7:57-58).

“God’s word is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Heb 4:12). God’s Word resists our resistance and demands a response. As our hearts begin to burn (Lk 24:32) when they are penetrated by God’s Word (Heb 4:12), we will either crucify our flesh “with its passions and desires” (Gal 5:24) or kill the Lord’s prophets and thereby continue “crucifying the Son of God” and “holding Him up to contempt” (Heb 6:6).

What will you do? Even if you try to hide from God’s Word, His prophets may find you. What will you do when you are confronted with the life-changing demands of God? Say with Mary: “May it be done to me according to Your word” (Lk 1:38, RNAB).

Prayer: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them" (Acts 7:60). "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit" (Acts 7:59).

Promise: "You are my Rock and my Fortress; for Your name's sake You will lead and guide me." —Ps 31:4

STAYING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT
"The Stephen already spoken of was a man filled with grace and power, who worked great wonders and signs among the people." —Acts 6:8

Stephen was described as “a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5). After being falsely accused, threatened, and having people grind their teeth in anger at him (Acts 7:54), Stephen was still described as “filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 7:55).

Many of you reading this have been filled with the Holy Spirit through Baptism and Confirmation. You may have been renewed in the Holy Spirit through the Life in the Spirit Seminars, a novena to the Holy Spirit, or a special renewal program. Perhaps some of you are no longer filled with the Spirit. You have stifled or saddened the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19; Eph 4:30). Unlike Stephen, when you were hurt and/or rejected, you did not continue to proclaim God’s Word. You took your eyes off Jesus (see Acts 7:55) and focused on your hurt or the person who hurt you. You did not forgive (see Acts 7:60), so you are no longer filled with the Spirit.

Repent of unforgiveness. Repent of taking your eyes off Jesus. Be refilled with the Holy Spirit. Be a Stephen. Be a witness for the risen Christ. Don’t center your life around your pain but bring these hurts to Jesus. In this way, you will no longer stifle the Spirit. The “Spirit in its glory” will “come to rest on you” (1 Pt 4:14).

Prayer: Father, may my reaction to rejection deepen my life in the Spirit.

Promise: "This is the work of God: have faith in the One Whom He sent." —Jn 6:29

Praise: All praise and thanksgiving for the powerful gift of the Holy Spirit. Marantha!

IGNORANCE AIN'T BLISS
"Yet I know, my brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did." —Acts 3:17

Contrary to the old saying, ignorance is not bliss. What you don’t know will hurt you. God’s people perish for lack of knowledge (Hos 4:6).

Of course, the Lord is merciful and will even make excuses for us in our ignorance: “Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34). Nevertheless, there comes a time when there’s no excuse for our ignorance of God, His Word, and His plan of salvation. “God may well have overlooked bygone periods when men did not know Him; but now He calls on all men everywhere to reform their lives” (Acts 17:30). “For if the word spoken through angels stood unchanged, and all transgression and disobedience received its due punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore a salvation as great as ours?” (Heb 2:2-3)

Jesus wants us to know Him and His Word. He spent the first Easter Sunday explaining the Scriptures. On Easter afternoon, He taught the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Lk 24:27ff). In the evening, He “opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45). The Holy Spirit commanded the early believers to devote themselves to the apostles’ instruction (Acts 2:42). “Each day they studied the Scriptures to see whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

In this age of the Spirit, there’s no excuse for ignorance. “Do not continue in ignorance, but try to discern the will of the Lord” (Eph 5:17).

Prayer: Father, I'm sorry for staying ignorant. I choose this day to seek wisdom.

Promise: "The man who claims, 'I have known Him,' without keeping His commandments, is a liar." —1 Jn 2:4

Praise: "Amen! Praise and glory, wisdom and thanksgiving and honor, power and might, to our God forever and ever. Amen!" (Rv 7:12) Risen Jesus, You merit our constant praise!

WHEN SHEEP MAKE SHEPHERDS
"Look around among your own number, brothers, for seven men acknowledged to be deeply spiritual." —Acts 6:3 "They presented these men to the apostles." —Acts 6:6

Did you notice that the leaders of the early Church placed the responsibility for finding deacons on the “community of the disciples”? (Acts 6:2) That’s us! We need to be on the lookout for those who would make good leaders in the Church.

This was new for the early Christians. Jewish priests and Levites were born into their positions. The apostles were called and chosen by Jesus Himself. The early Church, however, called the lay people to raise up future leaders from “among [their] own number” (Acts 6:3).

Our priests and bishops today cannot possibly know each person who may hear a call to religious life and other forms of leadership in the Church. They depend on each one of us to do our part in building up the Church. We can do this by:

  • asking God to reveal to us those “deeply spiritual and prudent” men and women (Acts 6:3),
  • pointing out their gifts to these people,
  • encouraging (Heb 10:25) them and praying for them,
  • discipling them to be more “spiritual” (Acts 6:3),
  • presenting these people to Church leaders by offering to introduce them to vocation directors, paying for them to go on retreats, etc. and
  • making disciples (Mt 28:19) by having as many children as God calls us to have and lovingly raising them in the faith.

The leaders of the Church depend on you. “Look around” (Acts 6:3).

Prayer: Father, may I be full of encouragement (Nm 13:2, 30ff).

Promise: Jesus "told them, 'It is I; do not be afraid.' " —Jn 6:20

Praise: Jacob leads retreats for young people, specifically for vocation discernment.

WILL YOU PASS HIS TESTS?
Jesus "knew well what He intended to do but He asked this to test Philip's response." —John 6:6

Jesus plans to test us. He will present us with humanly impossible situations (see Jn 6:5) to see whether we will walk by faith or by sight (2 Cor 5:7). He will test us to see whether we will judge by God’s standards or by men’s (1 Sm 16:7; Mt 16:23). We may even be tested by persecution. Will we do the natural thing: hate our persecutors and be intimidated by them? Or will we forgive our enemies, love them, and consider it our privilege to be “judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of the Name” of Jesus? (Acts 5:41)

We pass our tests not only by God’s grace at the moment of testing, but also by God’s graces, received hours, days, and years before the tests. Although the strength to have victory in times of testing can be infused into us at the last moment, spiritual strength, like physical strength, is usually gained in small increments over a long period of time. The present is the time to prepare for the future. Miracles, martyrdoms, and other tests which will happen years from now may stem from the graces we choose to receive today. Therefore, today “grow strong in your holy faith through prayer in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 20).

Prayer: Father, strengthen me minute by minute as I live in obedience and love.

Promise: "When the people saw the sign He had performed they began to say, 'This is undoubtedly the Prophet Who is to come into the world.' " ––Jn 6:14

MAKING WAVES?
"Better for us to obey God than men!" —Acts 5:29

The Holy Spirit is given to those that obey God (Acts 5:32). Additional movements of the Spirit are given to those who obey God in greater ways. The experience of Jesus’ disciples illustrates this principle. They obeyed Him by devoting themselves to constant prayer for nine days (Acts 1:14). Then they received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Before they received the Spirit a second time (Acts 4:31), they obeyed the Lord to a much greater degree. “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ instruction and the communal life, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). “Those who believed shared all things in common; they would sell their property and goods, dividing everything on the basis of each one’s need” (Acts 2:44-45). Before a third wave of the Spirit came, they obeyed to the point of being arrested, having been “judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of the Name” (Acts 5:41). Before the next wave of the Spirit, St. Stephen obeyed to the point of giving up his life for Jesus and becoming the first martyr.

The Holy Spirit is not rationed (Jn 3:34) but given lavishly (Ti 3:6). The waves keep on coming to those who keep on obeying in ever greater ways. Do you want a new wave of the Spirit? In what way will you obey the Lord as never before? The Holy Spirit continues to be given to those who obey God — more.

Prayer: Father, I will obey You even to death, and therefore be exalted (see Phil 2:8-9). Come, Holy Spirit, with wave after wave of Your gifts and graces.

Promise: "We testify to this. So too does the Holy Spirit, Whom God has given to those that obey Him." —Acts 5:32

Praise: Philip made the final switch in his church-hopping and became Catholic this Easter.

A DAY WITHOUT JESUS - One Bread, One Body, 04/03/2021

A DAY WITHOUT JESUS
"I had rather one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere." —Psalm 84:11

The first Holy Saturday was a day without Jesus. He was buried in the tomb and, because of the sabbath, His body could not be anointed (Lk 23:56—24:1) or possibly even visited (Mt 28:1).

Today the Church relives that first Holy Saturday without Jesus. The Blessed Sacrament does not reside in the tabernacle today. There is no Mass during the day. We identify with Jesus buried in the tomb (see Rm 6:3-4).

Mary Magdalene spent the first Holy Saturday waiting. She longed for the day to end so she could be at Jesus’ tomb. She so loved Jesus that she’d rather spend a thousand days at Jesus’ tomb than one day without Him. She even arose before dawn the next day to go visit His tomb (Jn 20:1).

The Jewish elders, scribes, and chief priests who conspired to hand Jesus over to Pilate probably spent their first day without Jesus doing the same things they did before Jesus came into their lives. That’s why they wanted to get rid of Jesus: because they couldn’t live their normal lives if Jesus was a part of their world.

What about you? How is your day without Jesus? Do you miss Him as did Mary Magdalene? What are you waiting anxiously for today: the chance to finally be with the Eucharistic Jesus tonight at the Easter Vigil liturgy, or the chance to finally eat the sweets you’ve been without for forty days? Is forty days without pleasures harder for you to endure than one day without Jesus? Are you hungry to go back to the life you had before Lent, or are you hungry to receive the new dimension of risen life Jesus wants to give you? (Jn 10:10)

Prayer: Jesus, apart from You, I can do nothing (Jn 15:5). You are my entire life (Phil 1:21).

Promise: (none)

Praise: (none)
