JOIN THE SERVICE
"My serving boy is at home in bed paralyzed." —Matthew 8:6

Jesus came not to be served but to serve (Mt 20:28). As followers of Jesus, we too come to serve others by providing for both their physical and spiritual needs. Like Jesus, we wash the feet of others and commit ourselves to live and even die in love and service (Jn 13:5).

Nevertheless, many of us are out of action, that is, “out of service.” Like Peter’s mother-in-law and the centurion’s serving boy, we are “in bed with a fever” (Mt 8:14) or “at home in bed paralyzed, suffering painfully” (Mt 8:6).

We need faith by which we let Jesus return us to service (see Mt 8:10ff). “Is anything too marvelous for the Lord to do?” (Gn 18:14) “Nothing is impossible with God” (Lk 1:37). The Lord can take the worst sinners and most broken people and make them serviceable. In Christ and in faith, we are “in service” no matter what.

“The harvest is rich but the workers are few” (Lk 10:2). St. Teresa of Avila said that God has no feet but our feet, no hands but our hands, no tongue but our tongues. The Lord needs servants through which to serve. By faith, accept God’s grace to “join the service.”

Prayer: Father, by Your grace and by faith I will serve till death and beyond.

Promise: "It was our infirmities He bore, our sufferings He endured." —Mt 8:17

Praise: St. Junipero led over six thousand people to Jesus and Baptism.

CHANGING NAMES
"God further said to Abraham: 'As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai; her name shall be Sarah. I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her.' " —Genesis 17:15-16

We all want certain things to change. The leper in today’s Gospel reading wanted Jesus to heal him. Jesus touched him, and “immediately the man’s leprosy disappeared” (Mt 8:3). Sometimes we want things to change not by disappearing but by appearing. For instance, Abram and Sarai wanted to have a child. We likewise want changes in our health, families, jobs, financial situations, churches, politics, and world.

The changes we desire are mostly exterior changes. However, interior change often precedes exterior change. Great interior change can often be expressed by a change of name. Abram’s name was changed to Abraham, and Sarai’s name to Sarah. Then they were miraculously able to conceive a child. We too often need a name-change before we can have changes in our health, jobs, families, etc.

Turn to Jesus. His name is “above every other name” (Phil 2:9). His name is the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). When Jesus changes our names, we are really changed inside and outside. Jesus changed Simon to Peter (Rock) and on this rock He built the Church (Mt 16:18). Jesus changed Saul to Paul and turned a murderous enemy of Christians into a Christian missionary. This change of Saul to Paul resulted in the Gospel being proclaimed to the world. The name of the game is the change of the name.

Prayer: Father, may I fully live the new life expressed by my baptismal and confirmation names.

Promise: "Happy are you who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways!" —Ps 128:1

Praise: The First Martyrs of Rome served as seeds which caused faith to grow in countless others. They came from all classes of society — soldiers, peasants, nobility, and merchants.

THE TODAY SHOW
"From now on a merited crown awaits me." —2 Timothy 4:8

In many nations, today’s feast is a holy day of obligation, even when it doesn’t fall on Sunday. This means that today’s gathering of God’s people is so important that it is often considered mandatory. Today is so special because:

  • St. Peter was the Rock on which Jesus built His Church (Mt 16:18).
  • St. Paul was the apostle to the Gentiles (Gal 2:7).
  • Both St. Peter and St. Paul were martyrs.
  • Both of these saints continue to be in communion with us by praying for us and ministering to us.

If God has His way, each of us and the whole Christian community will be different after today’s community celebration. We will be more holy. Many Christians will be freed from the chains of sin, addiction, and fear (see Acts 12:6-7). Many evils will be bound, and many graces loosed (Mt 16:19). Thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions will give their lives to Jesus and be on the path to salvation. Today, countless throngs throughout the world will receive the fullness of the Spirit.

Of course, every day is a day of grace, but the Lord has chosen some days to be even more significant (see Sir 33:7-9). “This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it” (Ps 118:24). Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, when today I hear Your voice, may I harden not my heart (see Ps 95:7-8).

Promise: "The Lord will continue to rescue me from all attempts to do me harm and will bring me safe to His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen." —2 Tm 4:18

Praise: "The Holy Spirit descended upon all who were listening to Peter's message" (Acts 10:44).

I'M TORN IN TWO FOR YOU
"[Abram] split them in two, and placed each half opposite the other." —Genesis 15:10

In the Old Testament, a covenant ceremony involved killing an animal and cutting it into two pieces. Both parties of the covenant then walked between the two halves of the animal. This walk guaranteed the vow to be faithful to the terms of the covenant: If I break the covenant, may I be split in two like these animal parts between which I walk (see Jer 34:18).

God made a covenant with Abram to provide him with many descendants (Gn 15:1-5). He had Abram cut up several animals and place “each half opposite the other” (Gn 15:10). In the form of a “smoking brazier and a flaming torch...[God] passed between those pieces. It was on that occasion that the Lord made a covenant with Abram” (Gn 15:17-18). God promised to Abram that He would be split in two if He should fail to keep His terms of the covenant.

In a Church wedding, the bride makes a covenant to be faithful to her husband by walking down the center aisle, between his family and hers. The Israelites walked between the two walls of the Red Sea to receive their freedom to be the People of God (Ex 14:22). Do you feel like you are walking between a rock and a hard place? Could that be part of the price to pay for being faithful to your Baptismal and Eucharistic covenants with God?

God is serious about keeping covenants. He gave His life for us, and He asks us to do the same. Beg the Lord for the grace to be faithful to your covenants.

Prayer: Lord, You risked everything to covenant to me. May I always be whole in You rather than torn apart by leaving You.

Promise: "Throughout the earth [God's] judgments prevail." —Ps 105:7

Praise: St. Irenaeus, a Second Century bishop, used his wisdom to combat the heresy of Gnosticism.

DECIDING ARIGHT
"Enter through the narrow gate." —Matthew 7:13

To make the right decision, we must ask the right question. For example, if we ask “What do I want?”, we are setting ourselves up to make the wrong decision; for reality is not based on what we want but on what God wants.

To make the right decision, we must decide by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7). For example, Lot saw that the land of Sodom and Gomorrah looked like the best land (Gn 13:10-11). So he chose to settle there. Little did he know that this land would soon be destroyed, as fire and brimstone rained on it.

To make the right decision, we must not automatically choose the easy way, for the easy way often “leads to damnation” (Mt 7:13), while the rough way of the cross leads to life eternal (see Mt 7:14).

To make the right decision, we in our culture of death must choose the road less traveled and sparsely traveled (Mt 7:13-14). In our culture, the popular position is frequently wrong. The majority is more likely to be immoral than moral.

To make the right decision, we must first decide to give our lives to Christ. Decide for Christ now.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to guide me to all truth (Jn 16:13).

Promise: "Treat others the way you would have them treat you: this sums up the law and the prophets." —Mt 7:12

Praise: St. Cyril of Alexandria was a doctor of the Church, defending Jesus' Divinity. He rejoiced in suffering for Christ when falsely accused of heresy and being imprisoned for his faith (see 1 Pt 4:13-16).

TOTAL ABANDONMENT
"Abram went as the Lord directed him." —Genesis 12:4

When Abram was seventy-five years old, the Lord told him to take his family and all his possessions, leave his homeland, and go to a place which would later be shown him (Gn 12:1, 4-5). Abram obeyed. What would you do if you were given a similar command?

The Lord commanded St. Joseph in a dream: “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt” (Mt 2:13). “Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother and left that night for Egypt” (Mt 2:14). Would you obey as Joseph obeyed?

The Lord told the Blessed Virgin Mary, a teenage girl, to give up her future plans and conceive God by the power of the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:31ff). Can the Lord do anything He wants with your future?

Because of your obedient love for the Lord, are you willing to move, move immediately, and move everything? When we accept Jesus as Lord of our lives, we abandon ourselves to Him. We invite Him to do anything He wants with us at any time. We “live no longer” for ourselves “but for Him” (2 Cor 5:15). Under His lordship, we have lost our lives (see Lk 9:24). We can say with St. Paul:  “It is no longer I who live, but Christ Who lives in me” (Gal 2:20, RSV-CE).

Prayer: Jesus, You gave Your life for me. I give my life for You.

Promise: "If you want to avoid judgment, stop passing judgment." —Mt 7:1

Praise: Fr. Juan, suffering from terminal cancer, witnessed to his faith in Jesus by proclaiming: "I don't know what the future holds, but I know Who holds the future."

FEAR NOT
"Do not be afraid of anything." —Matthew 10:31

Our reaction to fear will be among the best or worst aspects of our lives. We will either let ourselves be manipulated by fear into sinful compromises and eventual damnation, or we will refuse to be controlled by fear and eventually push it out of our lives (see 1 Jn 4:18). Therefore, Jesus repeatedly commands us: “Do not let them intimidate you” (Mt 10:26). “Do not fear those who deprive the body of life but cannot destroy the soul” (Mt 10:28). “Do not be afraid of anything” (Mt 10:31).

Our response to fear should be faith. Jesus told Jairus after his daughter died: “Do not fear, only believe” (Mk 5:36, RSV-CE). When his friends had turned against him in vengeance, Jeremiah had the faith to fearlessly proclaim: “The Lord is with me, like a mighty Champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph” (Jer 20:11). Even when we are enduring our own agony in the garden or suffering on our own Calvary, by faith we can refuse to be manipulated by fear. We can “say with confidence: ‘The Lord is my Helper, I will not be afraid; what can man do to me?’ ” (Heb 13:6) By faith we can proclaim: “The Lord is my life’s Refuge; of whom should I be afraid?...Though an army encamp against me, my heart will not fear” (Ps 27:1, 3). Fear not.

Prayer: Father, may my awareness that You are in me make me fearless. May Your love push fear out of my life (see 1 Jn 4:18).

Promise: "For if by the offense of the one man all died, much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound for all." —Rm 5:15

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, Victor over death. You are "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). Alleluia!

GOD'S BULLDOZER
"What will this child be?" —Luke 1:66

St. John the Baptizer was the “front man” for Jesus. “John heralded the coming of Jesus by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel” (Acts 13:24).

John was a spiritual bulldozer who cleared God a straight path and prepared a highway for Jesus (see Is 40:3-4; Lk 3:3-5). A good example of the effects of John’s spiritual bulldozing is found in an incident described in John 10:39-42. Jesus had been preaching in Jerusalem, and the Jewish leaders rejected Him. They “tried to arrest Him, but He eluded their grasp” (Jn 10:39). John had not spent any time baptizing in Jerusalem; his ministry was generally spent in the desert. Jesus’ visit to Jerusalem had not been prepared for by a “front man” preaching repentance. Without such preparation, the people rejected Him.

Jesus left Jerusalem and “went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and while He stayed there many people came to Him” (Jn 10:40-41). John had testified about Jesus in the desert, and his testimony prepared a straight path for the Lord into the hearts of the people of that area. The people “commented, ‘...Whatever John said about this man was true.’ In that place, many came to believe in” Jesus (Jn 10:41-42).

In one place, John had ministered a baptism of repentance and the people of that place received Jesus and came to believe in Him. In another place, which did not have that intense road-grading baptism of repentance, Jesus was rejected. Repent! Clear out any baggage in your life that blocks the Lord’s way. Prepare “a straight path” for the Lord in your life (Lk 3:4) by repenting of all sin.

Prayer: Father, I will repent and go to Confession immediately. May St. John's bulldozer clear a straight path in my life.

Promise: "My God is now my Strength!" —Is 49:5

Praise: St. John the Baptizer prayed: "[Jesus] must increase, while I must decrease" (Jn 3:30).

BLACK LIGHT
"If your light is darkness, how deep will the darkness be!" —Matthew 6:23

Have you ever been in a room illuminated only by a black light? Such a room is very dimly lit. Everything that’s white shows up, such as teeth and white socks. Dark objects are barely visible. It’s difficult to see how things interrelate. Picture the same room with the black light replaced by a hundred-watt bulb. Now that the room is brightly lit, it’s easy to see how the objects in the room relate to one another.

Jesus describes a similar situation in today’s Gospel. In modern society, we are bombarded with the values of a secular humanistic culture which disregards God, a “generation which has gone astray” (Acts 2:40). If we allow our minds and consciences to be formed by such ungodly input, then we live in a deep darkness (see Mt 6:23). Like the person in black light, everything true can be seen, but not properly recognized. One can’t see clearly in the black light; the “light is darkness” (Mt 6:23). Scripture foretold this: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil, who change darkness into light, and light into darkness” (Is 5:20).

What programs do you watch? What do you listen to? “The eye is the body’s lamp” (Mt 6:22). Would Jesus say your eyes are good or bad? (Mt 6:22-23) Repent of focusing on the world’s input (see 1 Jn 2:15). Instead, read Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Be immersed in Jesus, for He has called us “from darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Pt 2:9).

Prayer: Jesus, may I never prefer the darkness to You (Jn 3:19). Help me to follow You always and be in the light (Jn 8:12).

Promise: "Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame." —Ps 34:6

THE PRAYER WE DARE TO PRAY
"Our Father in heaven…" —Matthew 6:9

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, there is an entire section of teaching about the prayer that Jesus taught us, the Our Father (Catechism, 2759-2865). The extensive treatment in the Catechism teaches that there is an important order in the sequence of each clause in the Our Father. “The Lord’s Prayer is the most perfect of prayers...In it we ask, not only for all the things we can rightly desire, but also in the sequence that they should be desired” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2763).

The prayer begins with the recognition that the heavenly, almighty God is actually our Father (Mt 6:9). The prayer also begins with praise of the heavenly Father, hallowing His name and acknowledging His greatness; nonetheless, we radically recognize Him as our loving Father, even our “Abba,” our Daddy (Mt 6:9; Rm 8:15; Gal 4:6).

The Our Father approaches God with radical boldness (Catechism, 2777), assuming that God loves us so deeply that He will listen to us and answer our prayers. The prayer is communal, asking for “us” rather than for “me” (Mt 6:11). The prayer underscores that we do not pray alone, but as part of a faith-filled community of believers. As Jesus taught us, dare to pray the Our Father with boldness, trust, and confidence.

Prayer: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name…" (Mt 6:9).

Promise: "Great are the works of the Lord, exquisite in all their delights." —Ps 111:2

Praise: St. Paulinus sold his property for the benefit of the poor. He served as bishop for several decades.

ZONING CHANGES
"He dawns through the darkness, a light for the upright." —Psalm 112:4

In many aspects of our lives, we have various zones. For example, we all have comfort zones in work, relationships, prayer, study, service, etc. In our comfort zones, we are relaxing and probably enjoying ourselves.

If we, because of love or some other reason, cross the boundary of our comfort zone, we enter into a discomfort zone. In this zone, we are struggling and suffering (see 1 Pt 4:19). In this zone, we find both the danger of burnout and the opportunity for significant growth in holiness as our faculties are challenged and exercised vigorously.

If we proceed further in love and cross the boundary of the discomfort zone, we enter a new, mysterious zone which is difficult to name. It is a zone of mystery and of the paradox of indescribable joy combined with crucified love. In this zone, we are living, giving, praying and fasting “on the edge.” We are secretly extending ourselves more than ever before, and our Father Who sees in secret will repay us (Mt 6:4, 6, 18). This is the zone of agonizing temptations and Paschal victory.

Cross the border into a zone of greater love.

Prayer: Father, may I accept that my life is zoned for the cross.

Promise: "He Who supplies seed for the sower and bread for the eater will provide in abundance; He will multiply the seed you sow and increase your generous yield." —2 Cor 9:10

Praise: St. Aloysius Gonzaga gave his life serving those dying from an epidemic.

PERFECT LOVE
"Be made perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." —Matthew 5:48

Now I will show you the way of perfection (1 Cor 12:31).

Jesus commands us to be made perfect (Mt 5:48). He then must necessarily make available to us the grace to be perfect. In fact, Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit. “The love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us” (Rm 5:5). “God is Love” (1 Jn 4:8), and we have been given God’s very own love. Love is the way of perfection (1 Cor 12:31), and God has given us all we need to be perfect in love.

Jesus, Love incarnate (1 Jn 4:16), made Himself poor (2 Cor 8:9) for our sake. Like Jesus, we are to love one another (Jn 15:12-13) so much that we decrease to the point of laying down our lives. We do whatever it takes to pour ourselves out in love. We become poor (2 Cor 8:9), humble ourselves (Mt 23:12), decrease (Jn 3:30), and even happily disappear in self-forgetfulness (Jn 3:29), if that’s what it takes to love one another.

Because Jesus pours out the Holy Spirit within us, we are never limited in loving. We can even love in the most perfect way, that is, loving our enemies (Mt 5:44). Our “love never fails” (1 Cor 13:8). There is no limit to our ability to love those who hurt us (1 Cor 13:7).

“Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22). Drink deeply from the fountain of perfect love. Live in the love of Jesus (Jn 15:9).

Prayer: Jesus, You are Love incarnate. Fill me with the Holy Spirit so I may spread Your love to my friends and enemies (Mt 5:44).

Promise: "Happy he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord, his God." —Ps 146:5

Praise: Robert was delivered from his deadly lifestyle and now leads a full life in Christ (see Jn 10:10).

DYING TO EVANGELIZE
"Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" —2 Corinthians 6:2

“The harvest is good but laborers are scarce” (Mt 9:37). Over four billion people do not know Jesus. Moreover, many of the one-and-a-half billion people who have been baptized as Christians don’t love Jesus with all their hearts, souls, minds, and strength (see Lk 10:27). Therefore, we have a monumental job in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus’ kingdom throughout the whole world (see Mt 24:14).

However, the Lord will multiply our efforts if we but give our all to Him and to world evangelization. We must be willing to do, say or sacrifice anything to lead others to Christ. We should gladly suffer “trials, difficulties, distresses, beatings, imprisonments, and riots...hard work, sleepless nights, and fastings” (2 Cor 6:4-5) to lead others to the Lord. We must even be willing to die so as to lead people to Christ.

Jesus said: “I solemnly assure you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit” (Jn 12:24). Jesus died to save us. As His witnesses, we also must love people enough to be willing to die so as to lead them to salvation. Pray for the heart of Christ. Pray for crucified love. Pray for all “to be saved and come to know the truth” (1 Tm 2:4).

Prayer: Father, change my heart so that I will love others into Your kingdom.

Promise: "But what I say to you is: offer no resistance to injury. When a person strikes you on the right cheek, turn and offer him the other." —Mt 5:39

Praise: During a period of spiritual dryness, St. Romuald was praying Psalm 32 and read the following verse: "I will instruct you and show you the way you should walk; I will counsel you" (Ps 32:8). With that, God gave him a deep understanding of His love.

GOD'S NUDGES
"I bore you up on eagle wings." —Exodus 19:4

Researchers have discovered that eagles live in cliffs of the mountainous Sinai region in which God spoke the above words to Moses. To teach their young to fly, the eagles nudge their young nestlings out of the nest, causing them to free-fall off the side of the cliff. If the baby eagle isn’t able to discover how to fly in the pressure of the moment, the mother eagle swoops downward and “catches” the young eagle on her extended wings. She then flies around with her young offspring to give it the sensation of flying. She repeats this until the young eagle learns how to fly on its own.

Moses declares of God: “As an eagle incites its nestlings forth by hovering over its brood, so He spread His wings to receive them and bore them up on His pinions” (Dt 32:11). God didn’t create us to stay in the safety of the nest. He nudges us out of our comfort zone, personally bears us up on His wings when we fall (Ex 19:4), and assures us of His loving care (1 Pt 5:7). Though this frequent divine nudging might seem stressful or even unbearable, the Lord uses it to renew us rather than exhaust us (Ps 103:5).

An eagle can’t fly if it is scared stiff. It must relax and flow with the wind. Likewise, we must relax, let it be done to us, and let the wind of the Spirit carry us wherever God wills (Jn 3:8). When we abandon ourselves to God’s nudges, we discover that instead of stressing out, we learn to fly. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart” (Prv 3:5). “Soar as with eagles’ wings” (Is 40:31).

Prayer: Father, renew my youth "like the eagle's" (Ps 103:5).

Promise: "It is precisely in this that God proves His love for us: that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." —Rm 5:8

Praise: "Praise the Lord, all you nations; glorify Him, all you peoples!" (Ps 117:1)

WHEN "IT" MEANS "THAT"
"His mother said to Him: 'Son, why have You done this to us? You see that Your father and I have been searching for You in sorrow.' " —Luke 2:48

When Mary was a teenager, she said to the Lord: “Let it be done unto me” (Lk 1:38). At this, she became the mother of God and seemingly an adulteress risking execution. Mary’s “it” meant “that”. Next, her “it” meant having her Baby in a stable (see Lk 2:7). Soon her “it” meant traveling with Joseph and the baby Jesus in the middle of the night to Egypt (see Mt 2:14). Twelve years later, Mary’s “it” meant being separated from Jesus for three days at the Passover in Jerusalem (see Lk 2:44-46). This prefigured a Passover about twenty years later when Jesus would become the slain Passover Lamb. At the foot of the cross, Mary would witness her Son Jesus being slain. Mary’s “it” also meant the first Christian Pentecost, her assumption into heaven, and her crowning as the Queen of heaven and earth.

The purpose of each person’s life is to say with Mary: “I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done unto me according to God’s word” (see Lk 1:38). Then when we find out the details of this fidelity, we must accept God’s grace to be like Mary and be faithful to our unconditional commitment to the Lord. Consecrate your life to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Then never turn back (see Lk 9:62).

Prayer: Father, may my commitment to You be total and permanent, as is Your commitment to me.

Promise: "All who heard [Jesus] were amazed at His intelligence and His answers." —Lk 2:47

ALL-CONSUMING FIRE (see Heb 12:29)
"God's love was revealed in our midst in this way." —1 John 4:9

The Sacred Heart is displayed as a heart on fire. Jesus’ heart is pictured as outside His body, aflame with His burning love. God’s divine love is “a consuming fire” (Heb 12:29).

Many people are afraid of catching on fire with God’s love. They intuitively realize that if they let themselves catch on fire with God’s love, it will mean giving their entire life to Him. They envision themselves like candles set aflame with the love of God, becoming fully consumed to the point of burning down to nothing in His all-consuming fire. This is an incomplete picture of what it means to catch on fire with God’s love.

There are other, more full images in Scripture of what it is like to catch on fire for God. The burning bush which attracted Moses was on fire, yet was not consumed (Ex 3:2-3). The bush did not “burn out,” but instead attracted Moses to itself. If we let the Lord set us on fire with His love, we will radiate the love of God and not burn out (see Hos 11:9; Is 43:2).

In the Old Testament, people died when they approached God too closely (see e.g. 2 Sm 6:6-7). But in the New Testament, He calls us to approach Him intimately (see Heb 12:18-24). Don’t be afraid God will ask too much. Be inflamed in the burning love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and let it consume you.

Prayer: Jesus, I am all Yours. Give me only Your love, and I will burn for You.

Promise: "God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him." —1 Jn 4:16

ONE GOOD TURN
"Whenever he turns to the Lord, the veil will be removed." —2 Corinthians 3:16

Because of our sinful nature, a veil obstructs our understanding of the Bible. Only by turning to Jesus and the Holy Spirit is this veil removed (2 Cor 3:14-17). If we turn to the Lord, we will gaze on His glory with unveiled faces and be “transformed from glory to glory into His very image by the Lord Who is the Spirit” (2 Cor 3:18).

If we don’t turn to the Lord, we will falsely accuse others of “veiling” the gospel, although the veil is actually due to our lack of understanding (see 2 Cor 4:3). Eventually, our minds will not only be veiled but “blinded by the god of the present age” (2 Cor 4:4). We will be “headed toward destruction” (2 Cor 4:3).

We are eventually either unveiled or blinded. We are either transformed from glory to glory or deformed by our sins to destruction and damnation. We must turn to the Lord by turning our lives over to Him. This is the only true meaning of life. This is our only hope for the future. The Lord commands: “Turn to Me and be safe, all you ends of the earth, for I am God; there is no other!” (Is 45:22)

Prayer: Father, thank You for freeing me of blindness.

Promise: "If you bring your gift to the altar and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift at the altar, go first to be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift." —Mt 5:23-24

CALLIFIED
"It is not that we are entitled of ourselves to take credit for anything. Our sole credit is from God, Who has made us qualified ministers of a new covenant." —2 Corinthians 3:5-6

Fr. Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, was fond of teaching that it’s not so important to be qualified for a ministry but rather call-ified. He meant that if God has called us to a ministry, He will provide the wisdom and spiritual gifts necessary to carry out that ministry (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2004).

When we know we are called by God to a ministry and that God is providing what we need for that ministry (Catechism, 2000), this breeds confidence. “This great confidence in God is ours, through Christ” (2 Cor 3:4). We now see ourselves as God’s co-workers (1 Cor 3:9). We know that any problems arising are His to resolve, not ours. “He Who calls us is trustworthy, therefore He will do it” (1 Thes 5:24).

So instead of worrying or stressing about problems, we take them to Him in prayer. We listen to God for His answers. We do our best with great confidence in God, rather than in our own ability to accomplish anything. Though we are tested by both God (see 1 Thes 2:4) and others, we rejoice in Him Who called us. Thank You, Jesus, Lord of our ministry!

Prayer: Father, open my ears to hear Your call in my life and open my heart to heed it.

Promise: "Whoever fulfills and teaches these commands shall be great in the kingdom of God." —Mt 5:19

Praise: James, though engaged to Regina, so strongly felt the call to the priesthood that he broke off his engagement in order to enter the seminary. Regina not only supported him, but aided in his discernment by selflessly listening to him and praying with him. He has been a priest for several decades now.

"THROUGH HIM"
"It is through Him that we address our Amen to God when we worship together." —2 Corinthians 1:20

At every Mass, the Eucharistic prayer comes to a climax when the priest elevates the Body and Blood of Jesus and proclaims: “Through Him, and with Him, and in Him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is Yours, for ever and ever.” At this climactic moment, the entire assembly responds “Amen.”

This is God’s plan for worship. Through Jesus, we worship God together by addressing our Amen through Jesus to the Father in the Spirit (2 Cor 1:20). With Jesus (Eph 2:6; Rm 6:8), we are raised up to heaven in our worship and share in the life of the Father. In Jesus (Phil 3:9), we find our very life and share in the glory of the Father (2 Thes 1:12).

In the Mass, every person, prayer, praise, promise (2 Cor 1:20), and proclamation are all wrapped together and offered to God through, with, and in Jesus. In turn, God the Father shares His life with us through, with, and in Jesus in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Re-dedicate yourself often to God through Jesus in the Mass, even daily if possible. Joyfully immerse yourself in the worship of heaven. Experience the fullness of God — through, with, and in Jesus.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for lifting us up to the Father in the Mass. I will praise You in Eucharistic joy forever.

Promise: "Your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to your heavenly Father." —Mt 5:16

Praise: St. Anthony of Padua said: "Our humble and sincere request to the Spirit for ourselves should be that we may bring the day of Pentecost to fulfillment."

THE SECRET TO HAPPINESS
Jesus "began to teach them: 'How blest are the poor in spirit: the reign of God is theirs.' " —Matthew 5:2-3

Jesus proclaims that He alone knows the secret to happiness. He says that happiness is:

1)      choosing to be poor rather than rich (Mt 5:3; Lk 6:20),

2)      sorrowing in repentance for our sins rather than feeling good (Mt 5:4),

3)      becoming lowly rather than seeking power (Mt 5:5),

4)      hungering for holiness rather than for getting what we want (Mt 5:6),

5)      giving others a break rather than getting our rights (Mt 5:7),

6)      having nothing but Jesus rather than having everything  else but Jesus (see Mt 5:8),

7)      dying for our enemies rather than killing them (see Mt 5:9; see Rm 5:8-10), and

8)      being insulted, persecuted, and slandered because of Jesus rather than being popular (Mt 5:10-11).

Many people think Jesus is a fool (see 1 Cor 1:25). What He calls the secret of happiness seems to them the way to misery. However, some people have believed Jesus. They didn’t necessarily understand the Beatitudes, but they believed them and tried to live them just because Jesus said them. They walked “by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7). These people became the happiest people on earth and perfectly happy in heaven. Jesus was right all along.

Will you believe Jesus, look like a fool, live the Beatitudes, and be happy? Or do you think you know more about happiness than Jesus does?

Prayer: Father, may I be as happy as Your Son's death and Resurrection warrants.

Promise: "He comforts us in all our afflictions and thus enables us to comfort those who are in trouble, with the same consolation we have received from Him." —2 Cor 1:4

Praise: Jesus healed Ted of shoulder pain.

COMMUNION DISTRIBUTORS
"Is not the bread we break a sharing in the body of Christ?" —1 Corinthians 10:16

This book, One Bread, One Body, is intended to motivate us to celebrate Mass and receive Holy Communion daily, or as often as possible. Therefore, the feast of Corpus Christi is of special significance for us. We pray that everyone who has ever read this book is totally committed to Jesus and in deep communion with Him. Then it would be normal to express this communion in the way Jesus taught us at the Last Supper.

As we do this in memory of Him (1 Cor 11:24), we grow into deeper communion with Jesus. Through Jesus, we have communion with the Father and in the Spirit. We are also in communion with all those who receive Holy Communion. “We, many though we are, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf” (1 Cor 10:17).

If we could receive and give communion in the deepest sense of the word, our communions would be catalysts to change the world. Nations would be united. Denominations would crumble, and all Christians would be one as Jesus and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). We would see deep unity within church congregations instead of pettiness and jealousies. Marriages and families would be one in mind and heart. The whole world would be radically and quickly changed into the image and likeness of God if we received and distributed communion in the deepest and fullest way.

Prayer: Jesus, give me a desire to receive You daily in Holy Communion.

Promise: "For My flesh is real food and My blood real drink. The man who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him." —Jn 6:55-56

Praise: "O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine."

YOUR PRACTICAL ACT OF FAITH
"It is better to give alms than to store up gold; for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin." —Tobit 12:8-9

The archangel Raphael told Tobit and Tobiah that “almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin.” This seems to be a strange teaching, for we believe that sin is expiated by Jesus’ saving death and that we accept this expiation by our faith in Him. However, Jesus showed He accepted the reception of expiation through almsgiving when He said to the Pharisees: “If you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you” (Lk 11:41).

For Tobit and the Pharisees, almsgiving was not to be done in place of faith, but as an act of faith. The Pharisees “were avaricious men” (Lk 16:14). They laughed at Jesus when He taught we should be very generous in giving our money to the needy (Lk 16:14). For the Pharisees to give alms extensively, and in the right spirit, would take a great act of faith.

Tobit, while not as avaricious as the Pharisees, was also money-conscious. Before going blind, he had been a purchasing agent for the government (Tb 1:13). He was depressed because he had to depend on his wife’s salary for his livelihood (see Tb 2:10-11), and he had a large “savings account” in Media (see Tb 4:1). For people like Tobit and the Pharisees, giving alms was a great act of faith by which they could receive expiation for all their sins. What is a great, practical act of faith for you?

Prayer: Father, give me the faith of the poor widow in today's Gospel reading.

Promise: "She gave from her want, all that she had to live on." —Mk 12:44

Praise: Rachel was hindered by the sin of gossip. The Holy Spirit touched her heart and now she speaks freely of the good qualities she sees in others.

GOD IN THE BEDROOM
"Tobiah arose from bed and said to his wife, 'My love, get up. Let us pray.' " —Tobit 8:4

Look what happens when a married couple welcomes God into their bedroom (Tb 8:4). They marry “for a noble purpose” (Tb 8:7), such as convincing the world that Jesus loves the Church by reflecting God’s love in their marriage (Eph 5:25, 32). They pray together, lead holy lives, and pass godly faith to the next generation.

You may think that what happens in your bedroom impacts only you and your spouse. On the contrary, your “private” actions impact your children, extended family, and the world. In fact, Jesus declares that your private words and actions “in locked rooms will be proclaimed from the rooftops” (Lk 12:3). Moreover, if God is evicted from your bedroom, Satan moves in (see Lk 11:24-26). The work of the evil one is to destroy marriages and families. Your private actions and attitudes of mistrust in God are displayed publicly through unforgiveness, bitterness, and mistrust of your spouse, all of which sow the seeds of divorce.

Married couples, do you neglect to pray together? Have you practiced artificial contraception, sterilization, or abortion? Is your marriage honored in every way and your marriage bed still undefiled? (see Heb 13:4) Repent of any lack of trust in God for your marriage. God’s reputation is at stake. The world is watching your marriage. Will the world decide by observing your marriage that God is worthy of trust?

Prayer: Jesus, may all married couples accept you as Lord.

Promise: "Your marriage to her has been decided in heaven!" —Tb 7:11
