DOING WHAT YOU HATEBECAUSE OF WHO YOU LOVE

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore He has anointed Me. He has
sent Me to bring glad tidings to the poor." —Luke 4:18

Luke writes of Jesus' first day on the job to interest us in taking the
job of working for the harvest. Jesus ministers the word — preaching,
teaching, and prophesying. He preaches good news to the poor, sets
captives free, gives sight to the blind, and release to prisoners (Lk
4:18).

Will you take the job? Incidentally, there's no set salary for this job.
Jesus provides for your basic needs. You must trust Him daily for your
bread. Also, the working conditions leave much to be desired. Although
some speak favorably of you and marvel at your appealing discourse (Lk
4:22), many reject Jesus, you, and the gospel.

At the end of Jesus' first day on the job they threw Him out of town, and
attempted to throw Him over a cliff (Lk 4:30). If they treat the Master
like that, imagine how they'll persecute you, the servants (Jn 15:20).
Will you take the job? "The harvest is good but laborers are scarce" (Mt
9:37), and you can see why.

The reason we work for Jesus is to work with Jesus. Why does a young girl
work on cars? To be with her boyfriend. Why does a guy do house cleaning?
To do it with his girlfriend. Why do we suffer and work for Jesus? To be
with Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, may I do anything just to be with You.

Promise: "Then we, the living, the survivors, will be caught up with them
in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air." —1 Thes 4:17

Praise: Marie hated going to church as a girl. She encountered Jesus, and
now goes even to adoration between Masses.

PM eNewsletter 22nd Sunday in ordinary time

August 30th 22nd Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, seasons change, and we see life changing, but one
thing never changes and that is Your steadfast love for us.

Lord, help us to recognize that, and feel that love.

Lord, help that love give us the graces that we need to live
in true christian faith, faithful to You and Your ordained
leaders.

Lord, help us to trust the wisdom that You give the Pope
and his bishops, and let us grow in the knowledge that
Your Holy Spirit guides Your church in the continued truth.

Lord, let us trust our priests and deacons as emissarys of You.

Lord, help us all to pray for the ordained as they also struggle
with the problems of life as we do.

Thank You Jesus. Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday A BIG TO-DO
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=8/30/2009

"Act on this word. If all you do is listen to it, you are deceiving
yourselves." —James 1:22

Some of you have been reading this booklet, One Bread, One
Body, for years. You have read hundreds and thousands of
Scripture passages. You are greatly blessed. The Lord is not
expecting us to remember all these Bible verses or to know how
to interpret them all. He does expect us to live them all by His grace.

Knowing God's word demands doing His word. On Judgment
Day, the Lord will not ask us what we know of His word, but
how we've lived it. "For it is not those who hear the law who
are just in the sight of God; it is those who keep it who will
be declared just" (Rm 2:13).

So let's not kid ourselves. Let's take every word of the Bible to
heart and to life. "Humbly welcome the word that has taken
root in you, with its power to save you" (Jas 1:21). The Lord
will never give us a commandment without empowering us to do it.

Jesus promised: "Anyone who hears My words and puts them
into practice is like the wise man who built his house on rock"
(Mt 7:24). "He is no forgetful listener, but one who carries out
the law in practice. Blest will this man be in whatever he does"
(Jas 1:25). Jesus also promised: "My mother and My brothers
are those who hear the word of God and act upon it" (Lk 8:21).
Do the word.

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

GRANDPARENTS: A TREASURE

"JOIN FORCES"

It is necessary to join forces to defeat together all
forms of marginalization, for it is not only they
— grandfathers, grandmothers, senior citizens
— who are being injured by the individualistic
mindset, but everyone. If grandparents, as is often
said and on many sides, are a precious resource,
it is necessary to put into practice coherent
choices that allow them to be better valued.

"NOURISH FAITH AND HOPE"

May the Virgin Mary ... help them [grandparents]
always to nourish their faith and hope at the
sources of the Word of God.

GRUDGE MATCH

"Herodias harbored a grudge against him for this and wanted to kill
him." —Mark 6:19

Grudges with their bitterness, hatred, resentment, and unforgiveness are
catalysts for Satanic activity, insane violence, sexual perversions, and
even world war. Therefore, "see to it...that no bitter root springs up
through which many may become defiled" (Heb 12:15). "If you bring your
gift to the altar and there recall that your brother has anything against
you, leave your gift at the altar, go first to be reconciled with your
brother, and then come and offer your gift. Lose no time" (Mt 5:23-25).
"The sun must not go down on your wrath; do not give the devil a chance to
work on you" (Eph 4:26-27).

Even the brutal Herod probably didn't think he would become so perverse as
to behead John the Baptizer and order his head brought in on a platter at
his birthday party. But he didn't realize the diabolical power of
Herodias' grudge against John the Baptizer. If we don't forgive even our
most bitter enemies, we become part of Satan's most degrading perversions.
We join in with the Judases, Stalins, and Hitlers of all time. Our grudges
begin a chain-reaction that will have results as murderous as Herodias'
beheading of John.

Repent, forgive, and call on Jesus now. The crucified Savior alone can
give us the grace to pray: "Father, forgive them" (Lk 23:34).

Prayer: Father, use John the Baptizer's intercession to lead me to repent
of unforgiveness.

Promise: "They will fight against you, but not prevail over you, for I am
with you to deliver you, says the Lord." —Jer 1:19

Praise: St. John the Baptizer was such a powerful preacher and prophet
that King Herod feared him even when he was in prison (Mk 6:20).

SAFE SEX

"The Lord is an Avenger of all such things, as we once indicated to you by
our testimony. God has not called us to immorality but to holiness; hence,
whoever rejects these instructions rejects, not man, but God Who sends His
Holy Spirit upon you." —1 Thessalonians 4:6-8

Sexual purity and spiritual wisdom go hand-in-hand. It's very difficult to
be pure unless you are wise. Wisdom alerts us to guard against occasions
of sin. Wisdom tells us not even to look lustfully (Mt 5:28). This is a
form of adultery that was David's mistake with Bathsheba (2 Sm 11:2).
Wisdom tells us not even to mention sexual sin (Eph 5:3-4). "Dirty jokes"
and sexual innuendos help the devil tempt us. When we provide ammunition
for the evil one and load his gun for him, we're certainly not going to be
winners but losers.

We must guard our sexual organs in sanctity and honor, and not live as the
pagans (1 Thes 4:4-5). We must strictly resist sexual temptations, no
matter how loose and promiscuous the world becomes. We should not try to
conform to worldly wisdom but to the word of God. Our goal is to please
the Lord and give the world the good news that a life without sexual
bondage is God's gift to us. By grace we can be pure as Jesus is pure (1
Jn 3:3), if we are wise enough to be fools in the eyes of the world (1 Cor
3:18).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, may I respect my body as Your temple (1 Cor 6:19).

Promise: "At midnight someone shouted, 'The Groom is here! Come out and
greet Him!' " —Mt 25:6

Praise: St. Augustine finally saw that purity was not only more freeing,
but possible with God.

(For a related teaching, order our leaflet "The Bible on Sex".)

Don't block the flow of the Holy Ghost

Source: J. Lee Grady - Charisma

We often pray for more of the Holy Spirit's anointing. But if God gives you
His power, will you actually use it? A few years ago the Lord challenged me
about my level of spiritual hunger. He showed me that even though I had
stood in many prayer lines and repeatedly sung the words, "Lord, I want more
of You," I wasn't as passionate for Him as I thought I was.

In 1999 my church sponsored a conference on the Holy Spirit. At the close of
one service I was lying on the floor near the altar asking God for another
touch of His power. Several other people were kneeling at the communion rail
and praying quietly for each other.

Suddenly I began to have a vision. In my mind I could see a large pipeline,
at least eight feet in diameter. I was looking at it from the inside, and I
could see a shallow stream of golden liquid flowing at the bottom. The oil
in the giant pipe was only a few inches deep.

I began a conversation with the Lord.

"What are You showing me?" I asked.

"This is the flow of the Holy Spirit in your life," He answered.

It was not an encouraging picture; it was pitiful! The capacity of the
pipeline was huge-enough to convey tons of oil. Yet only a trickle was
evident.

Then I noticed something else: Several large valves were lined up along the
sides of the pipeline, and each of them was shut.

I wanted to ask the Lord why there was so little oil in my life. Instead I
asked: "What are those valves, and why are they closed?"

His answer stunned me. "Those represent the times when you said no. Why
should I increase the level of anointing if you aren't available to use it?"

The words stung. When had I said no to God? I was overcome with emotion and
began to repent. I recalled different excuses I had made and limitations I
had placed on how He could use me.

I had told Him that I didn't want to be in front of crowds because I wasn't
a good speaker. I had told Him that if I couldn't preach like T.D. Jakes
does, then I didn't want to speak at all. I had told Him that I didn't want
to address certain issues or go certain places. I had placed so many
cumbersome conditions on my obedience.

After a while I began to see something else in my spirit. It was a huge
crowd of African men, assembled as if they were in a large arena. And I saw
myself preaching to them.

Nobody had ever asked me to minister in Africa, but I knew at that moment I
needed to surrender my will. All I could think to say was the prayer of
Isaiah: "Here am I, Lord, send me." (Isaiah 6:8). I told God I would go
anywhere and say anything He asked. I laid my insecurities, fears and
inhibitions on the altar.

Three years later I stood at a pulpit inside a sports arena in Port
Harcourt, Nigeria. As I addressed a crowd of 8,000 pastors who had assembled
there for a training conference, I remembered seeing their faces in that
vision. And I realised that God had opened a new valve in my life that day
in 1999. Because I had said yes, He had increased the flow of His oil so
that it could reach thousands.

Many of us have a habit of asking for more of God's power and anointing. But
what do we use it for? He doesn't send it just to make us feel good.

We love to go to the altar for a touch from God. We love the goose bumps,
the shaking, the emotion of the moment. We love to fall on the floor and
experience one filling after another. But I am afraid some of us are soaking
up the anointing but not giving it away. Our charismatic experience has
become inward and selfish. We get up off the floor and live like we want to.

Pentecost is not a party. If we truly want to be empowered we must offer God
an unqualified yes. We must crucify every no. We must become a conduit to
reach others; not a reservoir with no outlet.

Search your own heart today and see if there are any closed valves in your
pipeline. As you surrender them, the locked channels will open and His oil
will flow out to a world that craves to know He is real.

ARE YOU READY?

"You must be prepared." —Matthew 24:44

Jesus is coming back to take us with Him (Jn 14:3). No one can know the
exact day or hour of Jesus' return (Mt 24:42). He will return at the time
we least expect (Mt 24:44). Therefore, we must be always ready. We are
ready for Jesus' second and final coming when:
* We are faithful, farsighted servants (Mt 24:45).
* We are working to feed people physically and/or spiritually (Mt
24:46).
* Our hearts have been strengthened and made blameless and holy (1 Thes
3:13).
* We have accepted Jesus' salvation (2 Pt 3:15).
* We are "without stain or defilement, and at peace" in God's sight (2
Pt 3:14).
* We are singing and praising the Lord (see Rv 19:1ff).
* We are "pure and follow the Lamb [Jesus] wherever He goes" (Rv 14:4).
* We have washed our robes in the blood of the Lamb and survived the
great period of trial (Rv 7:14).
* We have guarded our spirits against "indulgence and drunkenness and
worldly cares" (Lk 21:34).
* We are praying constantly (Lk 21:36).

Are you ready for Jesus to come back now? Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!

Prayer: Jesus, come back now or as soon as possible.

Promise: "May the Lord increase you and make you overflow with love for
one another and for all." —1 Thes 3:12

Praise: St. Monica was in a state of readiness in awaiting her Lord and
prayed constantly until her husband, son, and grandson were converted.

POWER-PREACHING

"We thank God constantly that in receiving His message from us you took
it, not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God." —1
Thessalonians 2:13

The preaching of Paul and Silas at Thessalonica was taken "not as the word
of men, but...the word of God" (1 Thes 2:13). Paul said: "Our preaching of
the gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power; it
was carried on in the Holy Spirit and out of complete conviction" (1 Thes
1:5). The Thessalonians' faith in God was celebrated throughout every
region since they "turned to God from idols, to serve Him Who is the
living and true God and to await from heaven the Son He raised from the
dead — Jesus" (1 Thes 1:9-10).

What made the preaching of Paul and Silas at Thessalonica so powerful?
* They preached for free and worked second jobs to pay their expenses
(1 Thes 2:9).
* They preached what they practiced. Their conduct was "upright, just,
and irreproachable" (1 Thes 2:10).
* They related to those who heard their preaching as loving fathers
relate to their children (1 Thes 2:11).

When we preach God's word in an atmosphere of self-sacrifice, holiness,
and Christian community, we will see the power of the gospel result in
many life-changing conversions and a renewed Church.

Prayer: Father, may my life give power to the words You speak through me.

Promise: "If I take the wings of the dawn, if I settle at the farthest
limits of the sea, even there Your hand shall guide me, and Your right
hand hold me fast." —Ps 139:9-10

Praise: Ron's conversion to the Lord was due, in part, to the example of a
priest who lived simply and embraced poverty.

HUMILIATION - One Bread, One Body, 8/25/2009

Tuesday, August 25, 2009, St. Louis, St. Joseph Calasanz

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8, Psalm 139:1-6, Matthew 23:23-26
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/082509.shtml

HUMILIATION

"Fresh from the humiliation we had suffered at Philippi — about which you
know — we drew courage from our God to preach His good tidings to you in
the face of great opposition." —1 Thessalonians 2:2

When we've just been humiliated, we tend to focus on ourselves, be
unforgiving and resentful, lick our wounds, and/or have a pity party.
However, such a time of humiliation can be just the right time to proclaim
the gospel. The humiliation we suffered may have been a defensive maneuver
by the devil to try to stop us from receiving an exceptional outpouring of
God's grace. When humiliated, we shouldn't draw back but charge forward.

For example, when Paul was humiliated, beaten, dragged from Lystra, and
left for dead, he "got up and went back into the town" (Acts 14:19-20).
When Paul and Silas were arrested, stripped, flogged, and had their feet
chained to a stake, they did not shut up or shut down but prayed and sang
to the Lord (Acts 16:19-25). Before long an earthquake rocked the prison,
and Paul and Silas converted the jailer and his family to the Lord (Acts
16:33). After Jesus' ultimate humiliation on Calvary, He had the ultimate
victory of resurrection from the dead.

Humiliation isn't always a bad sign. It often precedes the greatest works
of God in our lives, if we would only respond to God and not the momentary
experience of humiliation.

Prayer: Father, by faith may I let You turn my humiliation to the good (Rm
8:28).

Promise: "First cleanse the inside of the cup so that its outside may be
clean." —Mt 23:26

Praise: St, Louis used his public office and kingly position to further
the kingdom of the true King, Jesus Christ.

Revelation 21:9-14, Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18, John 1:45-51
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/082409.shtml

FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING

"Jesus responded: 'Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under
the fig tree? You will see much greater things than that.' " —John 1:50

Bartholomew (Nathanael) was prejudiced against Jesus because Jesus came
from Nazareth (Jn 1:46). Yet after Jesus mentioned He saw Nathanael under
the fig tree, Nathanael changed completely, moved from prejudice to faith,
and acknowledged Jesus as "the Son of God" and "the King of Israel" (Jn
1:49).

Why was Nathanael so impressed by Jesus' remark that He saw him under the
fig tree? What was Nathanael doing under the fig tree? No one knows why
the fig tree was so significant to Nathanael. Some Bible commentators
mention that the fig tree could be symbolic of the Israelite nation (see
Mk 11:12ff). Thus Jesus' reference to the fig tree would have special
symbolic significance. Others see Jesus using the supernatural gift of
knowledge, as He did with the Samaritan woman at the well (Jn 4:18). Jesus
could have been noting a secret sin Nathanael committed under the fig tree
(see 1 Cor 14:24-25). Another possible interpretation is that Nathanael
was praying under the fig tree, praying for the coming of the Messiah.
Jesus presented Himself as the immediate Answer to Nathanael's prayer.

On this special feast day, let the Lord speak to you symbolically,
prophetically, and/or prayerfully. You'll never be the same.

Prayer: Father, may I hear You say something today that changes my heart.

Promise: "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon
Him in truth." —Ps 145:18

Praise: St. Bartholomew, whose name Nathanael means "gift of God,"
received God's prophetic word with such zeal that he gave up everything
and followed Jesus.

BLESSED SUBMISSION

"As the Church submits to Christ, so wives should submit to their husbands
in everything." —Ephesians 5:24

This Scripture passage is among the most misunderstood in the Bible.
Submission is a dirty word in our contemporary culture. In the Bible,
however, submission is highly valued. It is Jesus' position on the cross.
Submission is the way of redemption and the power of God. It is not a
position of weakness, rather it is one of supernatural strength.
Submission is not passivity; it is an active, loving obedience even in
disagreement.

We must submit to the Lord, His word, and His Church (Eph 5:21). We must
be submissive to pastors, parents, husbands, governments, and leaders (Eph
5:21). If authorities contradict one another, we submit to the higher
authority. For example, if the government contradicts the Bible, we obey
the Bible and disobey the government. Most of the time, however,
authorities will not contradict themselves, but will contradict us. In
this case, we submit to them, deny our selves, take up the cross, and
follow in Jesus' footsteps (Lk 9:23).

Prayer: Father, give me the strength to accept the privilege of
submission.

Promise: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." —Jos 24:15

Praise: Praise Jesus, Whose submission to the Father's will bought us our
freedom.

PM eNewsletter 21st Sunday in ordinary time.

August 23rd 21st Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church heralds another tremendous
man of faith.

St. John the Baptist, who without fear, proclaimed what
was truth till he was finally beheaded.

Jesus, give us that steadfastness of heart that we will
first of all learn the truth as taught by the catechism
of the Catholic church, and then be willingly in love,
as we proclaim it to others.

Let us be heralds of Your love and let others see the
Christ in us.

Let us stand for Your law of love, and let us be as
fearless as St. John was in standing for what was right.

Thank You Jesus. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/BST/bst2009-08.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

GRANDPARENTS: A TREASURE

"IMPORTANT ROLE"

In the past, grandparents had an important role in
the life and growth of the family. Even with their
advancing age they continued to be present with
their children, their grandchildren, and even their
great-grandchildren, giving a living witness of
caring, sacrifice and a daily gift of themselves
without reserve.

THE THREAT OF THE CULTURE OF DEATH

Unfortunately, it seems that the "culture of death"
is advancing on many fronts and is also threatening
the season of old-age. With growing insistence,
people are even proposing euthanasia as a solution
for resolving certain difficult situations.

"THE LIGHT OF THE TRUTH"

Old age, with its problems that are also linked to
the new family and social contexts because of modern
development, should be evaluated carefully and always
in the light of the truth about man, the family, and
the community. It is always necessary to react
strongly to what dehumanizes society.

HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR PASTOR TODAY?

"The scribes and the Pharisees have succeeded Moses as teachers;
therefore, do everything and observe everything they tell you. But do not
follow their example." —Matthew 23:2-3

Many belong to churches where pastors, priests, and ministers do not live
holy lives. Some pastors have not even turned their lives over to Jesus.
Some stifle the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19) and are even unknowingly used by
Satan. What do you do under these circumstances? Do you leave the church?
No, you don't leave the body because of one part. Do you confront the
pastor? Probably not, as confrontation usually does not lead a person to
repentance, salvation, or life in the Spirit.

Your pastor needs love and respect. Give him God's kind of love:
unconditional love. Sure, you and many others may have been hurt by the
pastor. You are grieved to see your pastor working for rather than against
the devil. Nonetheless, love him unconditionally. God does, and He's
calling you to do the same. Love is "the way which surpasses all the
others" (1 Cor 12:31). "Love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Pt 4:8). Love
is as strong as death (Sg 8:6, JB). "Love casts out all fear" (1 Jn 4:18).
"Love never fails" (1 Cor 13:8).

It's still possible that after all that's happened, you may not be able to
love your pastor. Pray for that grace.

Prayer: Father, may our churches be characterized by unconditional love.
May I begin a wave of unconditional love. May they know we are Christians
by our love (Jn 13:35).

Promise: "Blessed is the Lord Who has not failed to provide you today with
an heir! May he become famous in Israel! He will be your comfort and
support of your old age." —Ru 4:14-15

Praise: Harry was involved in drug and alcohol abuse and sexual sin. He
found his way back to Jesus and the Church after reading a pamphlet about

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR

"The second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On
these two commandments the whole law is based, and the prophets as
well." —Matthew 22:39-40

The second commandment and part of the basis for the whole Christian life
is: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Mt 22:39). Only by
inviting neighbors to give their lives to Christ can we truly love them. A
total commitment to Jesus is the greatest need of a human person, for
without Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Therefore, if we fail to share
Jesus with our neighbor, we are refusing to give them the greatest
necessity of life. This is surely not love, no matter how many other nice
things we do.

After we share the Lord with our neighbors, we are called to serve them in
many ways. This is the follow-up of our evangelism. We are practicing what
we preach. Nonetheless, no amount of service can ever substitute for
loving people enough to tell them the truth about Jesus. Even if our
neighbors reject the gospel message and us, we must love them enough to
accept their rejection. Although evangelization is not all there is to
loving our neighbor, it is the essence of obeying the second commandment.
For Christians there can be no love without evangelism.

Prayer: Father, give me a deep concern for the salvation of those I see
every day.

Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with
your whole soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first
commandment." —Mt 22:37-38

Praise: Pope St. Pius X lived out the call of service to neighbor by
breathing renewal in the cause of Catholic Action. He also promoted more
frequent Communion and more Bible study.

One is the loneliest number

Source: The Alternative
At certain times and to varying degrees, we all detest being alone. To avoid
its pain, we turn the car radio on or the television 'just for company'.
Perhaps we resist solitude because of what we may discover about ourselves;
we fear being alone will reveal the insecurities which lurk deep within. If
we have unresolved issues, loneliness demands that we listen to their voices
and recollections.

Their sounds however, are like those of unwelcome guests, so we try to
silence them by frantic activity, loud music or energetic pastimes.

Even the most reclusive, anti-social of people look for something in the
clamour of their personal quietness, finding no comfort in the company of
others, they despise the presence of their own.

Being alone is a most necessary part of life, it is in the stillness that we
confront our inner demons and fears; if we never confront them, we can never
hope to defeat them.

Physical activity brings us into contact with the reality of the external
world, but it is solitude that we discover the reality of the interior.

It is only ever in times of alone-ness that we see our undisguised
nakedness, it is during silence that we gain access to the quiet secret
chamber of the depth of our being. Times of being alone will always arise.

Our busy-ness will forever be punctuated by occasions of quietness and
loneliness; these times of solitude are God-given occasions which possess
great potential.

If they are not used constructively, such occasions will be resented; we
will waste these moments, and we will never become real people. Take
advantage of these times - even create them; they are transforming because
they yield new insights, character development and maturity.

It is during these moments that we hear God speaking to us, and leading us
to new life.

Thursday, August 20, 2009, St. Bernard

Judges 11:29-39, Psalm 40:5, 7-10, Matthew 22:1-14

INTIMATIONS AND REVELATIONS

"She departed with her companions and mourned her virginity on the
mountains. At the end of the two months she returned to her father, who
did to her as he had vowed." —Judges 11:38-39

Jephthah realized that three things were involved in his victory over the
Ammonites: a vow, human sacrifice, and virginity. Jephthah accidentally
discovered three major elements of God's plan of salvation.

God's plan involves a vow, a covenant. Jeremiah prophesied that God would
make a new covenant with us (Jer 31:31). This prophecy was fulfilled when
Jesus made a new covenant in His blood by dying on the cross for us. The
covenant is re-presented in the sacrifice of the Mass (Mt 26:28).

God had intimated that animal sacrifices were inadequate to accomplish our
salvation (see Ps 40:7), but how could we offer a human sacrifice which
was not an abomination before God? Jesus, the God-Man, offered an
acceptable human-divine sacrifice on Calvary.

In the old covenant, virginity was to be mourned (Jgs 11:38). In the new
covenant, those who freely renounce sex lead the way in building God's
kingdom (Mt 19:12). Jesus is the perfect Example of this. He renounced sex
and reigns forever as King of the kingdom, King of kings, and Lord of
lords.

Prayer: Father, give me a supernatural knowledge of Your plan of
salvation.

Promise: "The invited are many, the elect are few." —Mt 22:14

Praise: St. Bernard gave up his worldly clothing as a nobleman and "put
on" Christ to bring God's love to others (Rm 13:14).

PASSING THE BUCK-THORN

"Once the trees went to anoint a king over themselves. So they said to the
olive tree, 'Reign over us.' But the olive tree answered them, 'Must I
give up my rich oil?' " —Judges 9:8-9

When those called to lead refuse God's call, people get stuck with bad
leaders. For every bad leader, three people may have refused God's call to
lead (see Jgs 9:9-13). For every buckthorn, an olive tree, fig tree, and
vine may have refused to make the sacrifices necessary to answer God's
call. When our leaders come from the "bottom of the barrel," it means that
those from the top and the middle of the barrel are disobeying God by
refusing His call.

How many Christians have been called to run for political office but said
"no"? How many parents have turned their children over to the secular
media to be parented? How many people have refused vocations to the
priesthood and religious life? Why do we wonder at having such poor
leadership?

Even if we have disobeyed God for years, we should repent and start
leading. Jesus can give us a full day's pay for even a few minutes of
last-minute leadership (see Mt 20:9). Jesus is merciful, and we can
receive His mercy, if we only repent and lead.

Prayer: Father, may I make any sacrifices necessary to take back the lead
of my children, church, co-workers, or country.

Promise: "You welcomed him with goodly blessings, You placed on his head a
crown of pure gold." —Ps 21:4

Praise: St. John Eudes touched the hearts of many by leading them to the

GIDEON AND MIDIAN

"The last shall come first." —Matthew 19:30

The Israelites were oppressed externally by the nation of Midian, and
internally by their own idolatry. Joash the Abiezrite, father of Gideon,
had built an altar to an idol (Jgs 6:25), as well as a sacred pole used in
idol worship. God called the fearful Gideon to deliver Israel from
Midianite oppression (Jgs 6:14).

When Gideon assembled a large army, God told him, "You have too many
soldiers with you for Me to deliver Midian into [your] power" (Jgs 7:2).
So God told Gideon to send the fearful men home, which reduced the army to
32% of its original force. God said: "There are still too many soldiers"
(Jgs 7:4). Then God devised a test to show which of those who were not
afraid would be alert, ready, and prepared for battle (Jgs 7:5; cp Mt
25:1-13). After this test, less than 1% of the original soldiers remained.
It was through these three-hundred lowly, obedient Israelites that God
received glory when He delivered Israel through Gideon. God chooses the
weak, "insignificant" (Jgs 6:15), and lowly so that He will receive glory
(see Ex 14:18). The last come first (Mt 19:30).

The victorious Gideon refused to grab the glory from the Lord. He instead
told the people to subject themselves to the Lord instead of their former
idols, saying: "The Lord must rule over you" (Jgs 8:23). God doesn't need
multitudes to be victorious. What He wants is spirit-filled servants who
abandon themselves to Him (Jgs 6:34) and leaders who put His will above
all else (Jgs 6:25ff; Mt 19:29).

Prayer: Lord, I want to be a "champion" for You (Jgs 6:12).

Promise: "For man it is impossible; but for God all things are
possible." —Mt 19:26

Praise: St. Jane Frances, a widow with four children, abandoned herself to
being the Bridegroom's bride. She then lived as a consecrated religious
for thirty-one years, building an order by founding eighty-six convents in
her lifetime.

"LEAN ON ME"

"But when the judge died, they would relapse and do worse than their
fathers." —Judges 2:19

The Israelites' faith often depended on who was their king, prophet, or
judge. As long as the king, prophet, or judge lived, the people worshipped
and obeyed the Lord. Yet after the leader died, they followed "other gods
in service and worship, relinquishing none of their evil practices or
stubborn conduct" (Jgs 2:19).

Do you have people upon whom you depend so much that their deaths would
weaken your faith in the Lord? What if the Christian you most respect
committed adultery, left the priesthood, or was caught stealing? Would it
just make you sad, or would it shake your faith? We thank the Lord for
those He has brought into our lives to help us grow in His love, though we
are not dependent on them but on God.

If everyone we know is unfaithful to God, the Lord is still faithful. "God
must be proved true even though every man be proved a liar" (Rm 3:4).
"Your faith rests not on the wisdom of men but on the power of God" (1 Cor
2:5). "The gospel I proclaimed to you is no mere human invention. I did
not receive it from any man, nor was I schooled in it. It came by
revelation from Jesus Christ" (Gal 1:11-12). If two or three key
Christians in your life died, what would you do? Would you "love the Lord"
all the more? (Lk 10:27)

Prayer: Father, pull anything out of my life that I'm leaning on instead
of You.

Promise: "Go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor. You will then
have treasure in heaven. Afterward, come back and follow Me." —Mt 19:21

Praise: When his wife died John's friends and family expected him to drink
again, but his faith in God kept him sober.

August 16th 20th Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church celebrates the queenship of Mary,
as she so rightly deserves.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday NOW OR NEVER
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=8/16/2009

"Keep careful watch over your conduct. Do not act like
fools." —Ephesians 5:15

Pope John Paul II and prophets from other Christian
denominations have proclaimed the prophetic word that we
must take advantage of the opportunities we have now
because these doors will soon be closed.

Jesus said: "The light is among you only a little longer.
Walk while you still have it" (Jn 12:35). "We must do the
deeds of Him Who sent Me while it is day. The night comes
on when no one can work" (Jn 9:4).

Jeremiah prophesied: "Give ear, listen humbly, for the
Lord speaks. Give glory to the Lord, your God, before it
grows dark; before your feet stumble on darkening
mountains; before the light you look for turns to
darkness, changes into black clouds. If you do not listen
to this in your pride, I will weep in secret many tears;
My eyes will run with tears for the Lord's flock" (Jer 13:15-17).

"Make the most of the present opportunity, for these are
evil days. Do not continue in ignorance, but try to
discern the will of the Lord" (Eph 5:16-17). "You have no
idea what kind of life will be yours tomorrow" (Jas 4:14).
Therefore, witness and work for the Lord now.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

GRANDPARENTS: A TREASURE

WITNESSES FOR LIFE

..Pray for grandparents, who, in the family, are the
depositories and often witnesses of the fundamental
values of life.

"EVEN MORE IMPORTANT"

The educational task of grandparents is always very
important, and it becomes even more so when, for
various reasons, the parents are unable to provide
their children with an adequate presence while they
are growing up.

"A GREAT TREASURE"

The Church has always paid special attention to
grandparents, recognizing them as a great treasure
from both the human and social, as well as
religious and spiritual viewpoints.
