DESIRE-ABLE

"What is it you want?" -Matthew 20:21

Jeremiah wanted something from God that concerned an important religious matter. Jeremiah faithfully prophesied the hard message of repentance that God had charged him to deliver. The Israelites responded by deciding to kill Jeremiah, preferring false prophecy and lukewarm teaching from their favorite priests and prophets (Jer 18:18). Jeremiah was rightfully angry that his listeners preferred false teaching to God's truth. This matched God's desire. However, Jeremiah also wanted God to avenge him and punish the people (Jer 18:21-23). God didn't want this.

James and John wanted something from Jesus that concerned an important religious matter. They had laid down their lives to follow Jesus. When Jesus was to be crowned as King, they wanted to rule with Him always (Mk 10:37). This matched Jesus' desire, for Jesus also wanted them to rule with Him forever in heaven (Mt 19:28). However, James and John wanted an extra honor: to sit on thrones at Jesus' immediate right and left (Mt 20:21). This didn't match the Father's desire (Mt 20:23).

Many of you are holy disciples who have laid down your lives for Jesus. You are concerned with the same things as Jesus. Now Jesus challenges you about religious desires that don't match His. Bring them to Jesus and leave them in His hands. Take delight in the Lord alone, and He will give you the desires of your heart (see Ps 37:4, JB).

Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, change my heart. May I put away my desires and embrace Yours (Rm 13:14).

Promise: "Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest, and whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all." -Mt 20:26-27

Praise: Joan forgave her husband for divorcing her.

REACHING THE NEXT DEGREE OF HUMILITY - One Bread, One Body, 2/27/2018

REACHING THE NEXT DEGREE OF HUMILITY

"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." -Matthew 23:12

Jesus is gentle and humble of heart (Mt 11:29). He humbled Himself even to death on the cross (Phil 2:8). He commands us to learn humility from Him (Mt 11:29). This Lent, He calls us to break new ground in humility - to be more humble than we've ever been before.

Grow in humility by:

* submitting to the authority of even hypocritical leaders (see Mt 23:3),
* admitting that you may be unjustly burdening others (see Mt 23:4),
* doing more of your good deeds anonymously (cf Mt 6:3 and 23:5),
* taking the lowest place more often (cf Lk 14:10 and Mt 23:6), and
* using your speech to lift up others rather than to exalt yourself (see Mt 23:7ff).

After these acts of humility, you can wash the feet of others (Jn 13:4-5), turn the other cheek after being offended (Mt 5:39), forgive and love your enemies (Lk 6:27), deny yourself, and take up the cross daily (Lk 9:23). There are hundreds of ways to grow in humility. This Lent, be more humble than ever and more like Jesus.

Prayer: Father, in the next month do a miracle of humility in me.

Promise: "Come now, let us set things right, says the Lord: though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow." -Is 1:18

Praise: Matthew reads the Scriptures often to fill his mind with "the good things men need to hear" (Eph 4:29; see also Phil 4:8).

MORE OR LESS? - One Bread, One Body, 2/26/2018

Monday, February 26, 2018

Daniel 9:4-10, Psalm 79:8-9, 11, 13, Luke 6:36-38

MORE OR LESS?

"Give, and it shall be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over, will they pour into the fold of your garment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you." -Luke 6:38

In Jesus' time, most people worked the land as farmers. Modern farm mechanization didn't exist. Recall that people wore ankle-length robes at the time. The method of sowing seeds in Jesus' time was for each person to go to the seedpile, grab the hem of their garment at the knees, and pull the garment up toward their waist. This created a "pocket," into which the landowner poured as much seed as the person and garment could hold. The person carried the seeds into the field and sowed them by hand until the "pocket" was empty of seed. Then he returned to the seedpile for the next load of seeds. This process was repeated daily until all fields were completely sown.

Jesus promised that those who give will receive in "good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over...[poured] into the fold of" their garment (Lk 6:38; see also Ru 3:15; Ps 23:5). This means that you who give to Jesus will receive even more work to do. However, you will be given more resources with which to serve Him, and your work will result in a great harvest, even a hundredfold one (Mk 4:20).

Jesus challenges each of us this Lent to work for Him more than ever before. His heart yearns for all to be saved and know the truth (1 Tm 2:4). He longs to gather His estranged children under His wings (Lk 13:34). Jesus says to all His disciples: "Listen to what I say: Open your eyes and see! The fields are shining for harvest!" (Jn 4:35) "Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:5).

Prayer: Jesus, "Here I am...send me!" (Is 6:8)

Promise: "Pardon, and you shall be pardoned." -Lk 6:37

Praise: When Patrick retired, instead of taking it easy, he worked even harder for the Lord.

PM eNewsletter 2nd Sunday of Lent

February 25th Second Sunday of Lent

Jesus, thank You for giving Your church the understanding to have this season of Lent.

Thank You Jesus, for the opportunity this gives us to truly look at ourselves and see what needs
to be improved and changed.

Jesus, we can learn to control, but only You can change us.

Jesus, bring us to Your Body in adoration and let us sit and learn.

Let us pray and grow.

Let us feel Your peace and accept You truly as our Lord and God.

Thank You Jesus, for the Eucharist.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "HE LOVES ME. HE LOVES ME NOT. HE LOVES ME..."
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/25/2018

"A cloud came, overshadowing them, and out of the cloud a voice: 'This is My Son, My Beloved. Listen
to Him.' " -Mark 9:7

"God is for us" (Rm 8:31). He "did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for the sake of us all"
(Rm 8:32). After that, will He not "grant us all things besides?" (Rm 8:32) God couldn't love us
more. He loves us unconditionally, sacrificially, infinitely, perfectly, and eternally.

Nevertheless, God does things and allows things in our lives which we can't understand. Although this
should make us question our powers of understanding, we are instead tempted to question God's love.

To dispel all doubts about His love, the Lord does not necessarily explain in detail why things are
the way they are. Rather, He speaks to us of His cross. He does not always explain why we suffer but
rather that He suffered and died for love of us. Jesus joined humanity in its sufferings. Jesus is
Emmanuel, that is, "God with us" in suffering (see Mt 1:23).

To learn the lessons of love in the midst of suffering, we must listen to Jesus when He speaks of
the cross (see Mk 9:7). This is a difficult subject for us. However, it is Jesus' favorite subject,
and because Jesus is our transfigured Lord and God, we listen to Him.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to help me to listen to Jesus about crucified love.

Promise: "I swear by Myself, declares the Lord, that because you acted as you did in not withholding
from Me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly." -Gn 22:16-17

Praise: Praise Jesus, transfigured, crucified, risen, and glorified God!

Trails are a gift from the Lord because they draw us closer to His heart. Once again I have a prayer
request or I should say a few requests. My sister, Liz, remains in hospice. This will be a long
process. My niece, Theresa Bates Scott, has ARDS and is in intensive care. This is a very serious
illness related to the lungs. My twin sister, Bernie, has a very serious eye infection and has to
have a cornea transplant. And lastly, I have an acute compression fracture at the L9 vertebra. This
is my 5th fracture of the vertebrae. AT one point my doctor said I had 7 fractures but he corrected
his total yesterday. This in itself is good news. I will have to have cyphoplasty on this fracture.
Bernie and I feel humbled to share in the sufferings of Jesus during lent. We would greatly
appreciate your prayers for our family.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-02.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

BE ON FIRE FOR GOD

"SOOTHING REMEDY"

Perhaps we see, deep within ourselves and all about us, the signs I have ... described. But the
Church, our Mother and Teacher, along with the often bitter medicine of the truth, offers us in
the Lenten season the soothing remedy of prayer, almsgiving and fasting.

SPIRITUAL BENEFITS

By devoting more time to prayer, we enable our hearts to root out our secret lies and forms of
self-deception, and ... to find the consolation God offers ... Almsgiving sets us free from greed
and helps us to regard our neighbor as a brother or sister ... Fasting weakens our tendency to
violence; it disarms us and becomes an important opportunity for growth... Fasting wakes us up.
It makes us more attentive to God and to our neighbor. It revives our desire to obey God, who
alone is capable of satisfying our hunger.

ENTHUSIASTIC JOURNEY

... I urge the members of the Church to take up the Lenten journey with enthusiasm, sustained by
almsgiving, fasting and prayer. If at times, the flame of charity seems to die in our own hearts,
know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin
loving anew.

LIVING LIFE'S COVENANT DIMENSION - One Bread, One Body, 2/24/2018

LIVING LIFE'S COVENANT DIMENSION

"The Lord is making this agreement with you: you are to be a people peculiarly His own, as He promised you; and provided you keep all His commandments..." -Deuteronomy 26:18

In the old covenant, God made us His people. Our responsibility in the covenant was "to walk in His ways and observe His statutes, commandments and decrees" (Dt 26:17). We were utterly incapable of the complete obedience called for in this covenant. So we broke the covenant.

Then God made a new covenant not just with the Jewish people but with all people. He covenanted not only to be our God but also our Father. We are not only His people but also His children. In this best and final covenant with God, our Father requires us not only to be obedient but even perfect (Mt 5:48). As children of God, we must act like God - even to the point of loving our enemies (see Mt 5:44). How could humanity, which failed in a lesser covenant, be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect?

God the Father sent His Son Jesus to bring about the new covenant through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. We must believe in Jesus and be baptized into Him (see Rm 6:3). In this way, we receive a new nature. In this nature, we have the grace to become perfect. We do this by following the Holy Spirit in Whom we are also baptized. In the baptized life of the new covenant, the life in the Spirit, we live in the new dimension of grace, holiness, perfection, light, freedom, power, and miracles.

In this Lent, as the catechumens of the world prepare to be baptized, let us sacrificially and joyfully prepare to renew our baptismal covenant at Easter.

Prayer: Father, may I live fully the abundant, eternal life of the new covenant.

Promise: "Happy are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord." -Ps 119:1

Praise: After having an abortion, Sarah felt heavily laden with guilt. Confessing her sin, she received forgivenss and healing.

REC ROOM

"Go first to be reconciled." -Matthew 5:24

In the Sermon on the Mount, the quintessence of the new covenant, Jesus expresses His divinity by superseding the old law in several ways. Jesus' first such statement is: "You have heard the commandment imposed on your forefathers, 'You shall not commit murder; every murderer shall be liable to judgment.' What I say to you is: everyone who grows angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment" (Mt 5:21-22). Anger, angry words, and angry thoughts are forbidden (Mt 5:22). Even if we are not angry with anyone but someone is angry with us, we must halt even our worship and "go first to be reconciled" immediately (Mt 5:23-24). Otherwise, we may be thrown into a prison of some sort, and we "will not be released until" we "have paid the last penny" (Mt 5:26).

Even if we are reconciled with everyone and everyone with us, we still must proclaim the message of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:19-20) and work in the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18). Reconciliation is such a high priority for Jesus that He reconciled "everything in His person, both on earth and in the heavens, making peace through the blood of His cross" (Col 1:20; see also Eph 2:16). We as disciples of Jesus must make reconciliation a very high priority. "We implore you, in Christ's name: be reconciled to God!" (2 Cor 5:20)

Prayer: Father, make my celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation a catalyst for a life of reconciliation.

Promise: "If the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all my statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him." -Ez 18:21-22

Praise: St. Polycarp was martyred in Smyrna where he served as bishop. When given the chance to have his life spared, he said: "For eighty-six years I have served Jesus Christ and He has never abandoned me. How could I curse my blessed King and Savior?"

"ROCK"-ING CHAIR

"I for My part declare to you, you are 'Rock,' and on this rock I will build My Church." -Matthew 16:18

Jesus is the Carpenter (Mk 6:3). He probably built several chairs out of wood. Like any skilled carpenter, Jesus would have built His chairs to last. The chair would have a firm foundation to prevent toppling and give confidence to the one seated in the chair.

Jesus is also "Head of the Church" (Eph 1:22). As Founder and Head of the Church, Jesus built His Church upon Peter and his successors (Mt 16:18). The pope leads the Church because Jesus planned it that way.

Jesus, the Master Carpenter, has built another chair, the chair of St. Peter. This chair is built not from wood, but from the authority of the pope. It has a firm foundation and the one who sits on that chair will not topple because of the skill of Jesus, its Builder. In fact, even the powers of hell cannot prevail against the Church (Mt 16:18-19). This chair is built to last forever.

Someday, Jesus will be sitting in another chair, the Judgment Seat (see Mt 25:31). He will ask you to render an account of your life (Heb 4:13). When Jesus asks you how you respected and followed the authority of the one who sat in the chair of St. Peter, the chair He Himself built, how will you answer Him?

Prayer: Jesus, I've spent too much time reclining in an easy chair instead of serving You (1 Pt 4:2-3). I repent of any rebellion against Your authority and Your Church. I give You my love and my life.

Promise: "When the chief Shepherd appears you will win for yourselves the unfading crown of glory." -1 Pt 5:4

Praise: "The Holy Spirit descended upon all who were listening to Peter's message" (Acts 10:44).

GREATER THAN JONAH - One Bread, One Body, 2/21/2018

GREATER THAN JONAH

"You have a greater than Jonah here." -Luke 11:32

Jonah was a reluctant, begrudging prophet. He did not want to obey the Lord. Yet he didn't want to be in the belly of a whale either.

However, the wicked Ninevites did not repent with begrudging, complaining reluctance. Incredibly, "they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth" (Jon 3:5). They had sinned with abandon, and they repented with much greater abandon.

The queen of the south "came from the farthest corner of the world to listen to the wisdom of Solomon" (Lk 11:31). She spared no cost to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

Christianity is not for the lukewarm, half-hearted Jonahs. Rather, Christianity is for the zealous, whole-hearted, radically "violent" who take God's kingdom by force (see Mt 11:12). Christianity is not for those who lock themselves up in the death-row prison of minimalism, for the letter of the law kills (2 Cor 3:6). Rather, Christianity is for those who do the law and in the Spirit go beyond the law to the abundant life (2 Cor 3:6; Jn 10:10).

Therefore, go to other daily Masses in addition to Sundays. Go to Confession frequently. Fast daily during Lent and frequently throughout the year. Go beyond tithing to almsgiving. Pray with others frequently. Change your lifestyle for Jesus. Tell others about Jesus, even if you may be persecuted. Live for Jesus in radical love and freedom.

Prayer: Jesus, light a fire on this earth (Lk 12:49), and let that fire begin in my heart.

Promise: "Have mercy on me, O God, in Your goodness; in the greatness of Your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me." -Ps 51:3-4

Praise: St. Peter Damian's teachings guided the Church a thousand years ago and still persevere today.

THE SPIRIT TEACHES US THE "OUR FATHER"

"This is how you are to pray." -Matthew 6:9

Prayer is to communicate with the infinite, perfect, all-holy God, Who is Love (1 Jn 4:16). Therefore, prayer is one of the most important aspects of being a human being. Prayer is an awesome privilege and power. In prayer, we are necessarily "in way over our heads." Because of this, "we do not know how to pray as we ought" (Rm 8:26). Thankfully, the Holy Spirit "helps us in our weakness" (Rm 8:26).

The Holy Spirit begins to help us pray by crying out in our hearts "Abba" ("Father") (Gal 4:6). It is shockingly true that the all-holy God of infinite mystery has adopted the baptized as His own sons and daughters. Thus, prayer means communicating with our own Father (see Mt 6:9).

The Holy Spirit makes us holy. Thus, we can pray that through our holiness God's name be hallowed, that is, holy (Mt 6:9).

The Holy Spirit convicts us regarding the sinfulness of building our own kingdom and doing our own will (Jn 16:8). Thus, we can pray in the Spirit: "Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (Mt 6:10).

In the Spirit, pray always to Abba as Jesus taught us.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to help me learn from Jesus how to pray as never before. May I break new ground in prayer.

Promise: "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but shall do My will, achieving the end for which I sent it." -Is 55:11

Praise: George prays the Lord's Prayer several times throughout the day. He implores the Father to execute His will in this world daily.

BREAD FROM HEAVEN

"Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You?" -Matthew 25:37

When Jesus comes in glory on Judgment Day, He will judge us on whether we fed Him by feeding the least of His and our brothers and sisters (Mt 25:35, 42). Jesus is so concerned with feeding us that, when Peter told Jesus that he loved Him, Jesus said: "Feed My lambs" and "Feed My sheep" (Jn 21:15, 17). To feed us, Jesus even went to the unimaginable extreme of making Himself the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35) and feeding us with His own body and blood (Jn 6:55).

Therefore, we must:

* be the best stewards possible in tithing and giving alms to feed those starving physically,
* be nourished daily by the Church's teachings, especially in the Bible, and by the Eucharist,
* invite others to be spiritually nourished daily by God's Word and the Eucharist, and
* pray for Christians who might be caught up in the culture of death or suffering from some form of spiritual anorexia.

Jesus died to feed His sheep. We must receive Him, become like Him, and die with Him to feed the sheep. When Jesus returns, He wants to say to each of us: "Come. You have My Father's blessing! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me food" (Mt 25:34-35).

Prayer: Abba, "give us today our daily bread" (Mt 6:11).

Promise: "Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord." -Lv 19:18

Praise: Charlotte committed to receiving the Eucharist as often as possible. Most weeks she is able to go to Mass daily.

PM eNewsletter 1st Sunday of Lent

February 18th The First Sunday of Lent

Jesus, this week we celebrate the feast day of the chair of St. Peter.

Thank You, Jesus, for starting Your church that we may have the leadership that is necessary
to keep us on the way to Your heavenly kingdom.

We, as Catholics, are so blessed to have the Pope, bishops, priests and deacons to guide us
always to You.

We have the dogmas that define our beliefs, and we have the catechism that lays it all out
for us.

Your church is truly a guide to You.

Let us pray for all our leaders.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday METANOIA
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/18/2018

"Reform your lives and believe in the gospel!" -Mark 1:15

Jesus began His public ministry proclaiming a direct command and challenge to everyone He saw. He
proclaimed the need to repent and reform. The word for repent in this Gospel passage text is the
Greek word metanoia. This word does not simply mean to be sorry for our sins, as appropriate as this
is. The word means literally to turn around and go in the opposite direction. This repentance means
to make a 180-degree turn in our lives if the direction in which we are traveling leads us away from
God. This Lent, God's Word tells us: "Seek the Lord while He may be found" (Is 55:6) and "Turn now
ten times the more to seek Him" (Bar 4:28).

The second thing Jesus commands besides repenting is to believe in the gospel (Mk 1:15). It is
possible to change our direction, but not continue walking along the way of the Lord. If so, we are
like the man who swept the trash out of his life, but never let himself be filled with God's grace
(see Lk 11:24-26). Since he didn't fill his heart with the Holy Spirit, the things of the world, the
flesh, and the devil filled the void in his life, and the final state of the man was worse than the
first (2 Pt 2:20-21).

We must both repent and believe. We must turn around, walk in the path of righteousness, keep walking,
and fill our minds and hearts with the Gospel (Ps 25:4-5, 8-9).

Prayer: Jesus, I know you thirst (Jn 19:28) for repentance, both my own and that of everyone I know.
May I devote my life to leading people to Your loving, forgiving mercy.

Promise: "The reason why Christ died for sins once for all, the just Man for the sake of the unjust,
was that He might lead you to God." -1 Pt 3:18

Praise: Glory to God! Jesus has risen and will raise us from the dead. Praise Jesus forever!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-02.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

BE ON FIRE FOR GOD

"COME BACK"

Lent summons us, and enables us, to come back to the Lord wholeheartedly and in every aspect of our life.

JOY AND TRUTH

... I would like ... to help the entire Church experience this time of grace anew, with joy and in
truth. I will take my cue from the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew: "Because of the increase of
iniquity, the love of many will grow cold" (24:12).

END OF TIME

These words appear in Christ's teaching about the end of time. They were spoken ... on the Mount of
Olives, where the Lord's passion would begin. In reply to a question of the disciples, Jesus foretells
a great tribulation and describes a situation in which the community of believers might well find
itself: amid great trials, false prophets would lead people astray and the love that is the core of
the Gospel would grow cold in the hearts of many.

Since he didn't fill his heart with the Holy Spirit, the things of the world, the flesh, and the devil filled the void in his life, and the final state of the man was worse than the first (2 Pt 2:20-21).

We must both repent and believe. We must turn around, walk in the path of righteousness, keep walking, and fill our minds and hearts with the Gospel (Ps 25:4-5, 8-9).

Prayer: Jesus, I know you thirst (Jn 19:28) for repentance, both my own and that of everyone I know. May I devote my life to leading people to Your loving, forgiving mercy.

Promise: "The reason why Christ died for sins once for all, the just Man for the sake of the unjust, was that He might lead you to God." -1 Pt 3:18

Praise: Glory to God! Jesus has risen and will raise us from the dead. Praise Jesus forever!

FAST FOR CHRISTENDOM

"The ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake, and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up; 'Repairer of the breach,' they shall call you, 'Restorer of ruined homesteads.' " -Isaiah 58:12

If we fast this Lent in a way pleasing to the Lord (see Is 58:3-6), we will see the Lord do many miracles. For example, light will rise for us in the darkness (Is 58:10). The Lord will guide us always and give us "plenty even on the parched land" (Is 58:11). He will renew our strength (Is 58:11) and do many other miracles. The miracles will lead to one of the greatest miracles the Lord will do through our faith and fasting. "The ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake, and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up" (Is 58:12).

In the past, the Lord has built some great works in the Spirit. Many of these works have been named "Christendom," a whole society centered on Christ. However, Christendom has been in ruins for centuries. We can read a little about it and surmise how glorious it was, but we have never seen anything like it. Yet the Lord promises that, as we fast faithfully, we will see the ancient ruins rebuilt. Possibly in this third millennium, we will see the ancient foundations of Christendom raised up (see Is 58:12). We will no longer be under the curse of a fragmented aberration of Christianity. Our faith and our life will be the same thing.

Fast for the building up of the kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus.

Prayer: Father, as we are docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, give us a new springtime of Christian life (see Toward the Third Millennium, Pope St. John Paul II, 18).

Promise: Jesus "saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his customs post. He said to him, 'Follow Me.' Leaving everything behind, Levi stood up and became His follower." -Lk 5:27-28

Praise: The Servites withdrew from the things of the world to give praise to God and live for Him above.

THE LOVE-FEAST AND THE LOVE-FASTING

"Jesus said to them: 'How can wedding guests go in mourning so long as the groom is with them? When the day comes that the groom is taken away, then they will fast.' " -Matthew 9:15

In accord with Jewish tradition, Jesus associated fasting with mourning. Not in accord with any tradition, Jesus taught that His kind of fasting was to be preceded by a wedding banquet. In some cultures, people fast before a wedding and a wedding banquet, but I don't know of any culture where people fast after a wedding banquet. Jesus implies that fasting in His kingdom is not only precipitated by the sorrow of sin but also by the fullness of communion with Him and His body, the Church. In Jesus' way of fasting, we are trying not only to stop sin from leading to more sin but also to move from the earthly wedding banquet to the ultimate one in heaven (see Rv 19:9).

Therefore, fast after and for a wedding banquet. Fast in covenant-love for Jesus, the Bridegroom (see Mt 9:15) so as "to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love which surpasses all knowledge, so that you may attain to the fullness of God Himself" (Eph 3:18-19). When you think "fast," don't think "food" but "fullness" and "love."

In the Catholic Church, today is a worldwide day of abstaining from eating meat. Let us go beyond the letter of the law (see 2 Cor 3:6). Let us not only abstain from eating meat but fast in other ways and in the other days of Lent. Begin this Lent fasting in fullness and love.

Prayer: Father, I love You more than food and life (see Ps 63:4).

Promise: "This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke." -Is 58:6

Praise: Keeping the old fasting tradition from midnight before Sunday Mass helps Peter remember the awesome gift the Eucharist is.

THE ADDICTION TO SELF

"Jesus said to all: 'Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in My steps.' " -Luke 9:23

Because of our fallen human nature, we are addicted to self. By nature, we constantly think about ourselves and are so far out of touch with reality that we automatically think of ourselves as the center of the universe.

To free us from our addiction to self, God became a man. He was not addicted to His Self. He even emptied Himself (Phil 2:7) and died on the cross for us. In this way, He broke the spell of self over the human race.

When we are baptized into Jesus and into His death and resurrection (see Rm 6:3), we receive a new nature, free from the addiction to self. When we sin and fail to live our Baptisms, we "fall off the wagon" and return to our "self-aholism." When we repent and renew our Baptisms, we are free again from our addiction to self.

In Lent, we prepare to renew our baptismal promises at Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday Mass. Thus, Lent is a time of denying ourselves and even dying to ourselves (see Jn 12:24). Then we can love ourselves and not be dominated by our addiction.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to free me from the subtle self-hatred of addiction to self. Free me to love myself and then my neighbor (see Mt 22:39).

Promise: "I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life." -Dt 30:19

Praise: Margaret increased the frequency of her Confessions and thereby increased her faith.

STIR THE LORD TO CONCERN (JL 2:18)

"Then the Lord was stirred to concern for His land and took pity on His people." --Joel 2:18

God is a God of mercy. Jesus has revealed that nothing causes more joy in heaven than a repentant sinner. The Lord apparently cannot resist a humble, contrite, repentant heart (Ps 51:19).

Those of us who are parents are blessed to get a glimpse of the heart of God in this area. When my children have approached me truly sorry for what they have done wrong, my fatherly heart melts with love for them. If I want good things for my children, how much more the Father longs for good, pure hearts for us.

The austerity, self-denial, and discipline of Lent is only going to flow from a soul that has been set on fire from the fountain of mercy that gushes forth from the heart of the Lord. He is readily stirred to concern, pity, and mercy for His people (Jl 2:18). He thirsts (Jn 19:28) to love us, shower mercy upon us, and wrap us in His arms of mercy.

What do you think will make for a successful Lent in God's eyes? Forty days without chocolate? That's a good start, but God wants forty days immersed in His merciful love, abandoned to His Providence.

Prayer: Father, I surrender my will to Yours. Consume me not only this Lent, but every moment of the rest of my life. I am completely Yours.

Promise: "For our sakes God made Him Who did not know sin, to be sin, so that in Him we might become the very holiness of God." --2 Cor 5:21

Praise: Sts. Cyril and Methodius, who were brothers, successfully evangelized Moravia, Bohemia, and present-day Bulgaria. They persevered in their mission to Moravia despite repeated persecution from the missionaries who had failed before them.

FOOT-NOTES

"When I say, 'My foot is slipping,' Your kindness, O Lord, sustains me." -Psalm 94:18

When we walk in Jesus' footsteps (Lk 9:23), we will fall because Jesus Himself fell while carrying His cross. We cannot allow these falls to erode our trust in our heavenly Father. In tempting Jesus, Satan even told Jesus that Scripture promised that He wouldn't even hit His foot on a stone (Mt 4:6; Ps 91:12). However, when the Lord promises to guard our feet from stumbling (Ps 116:8), He does not exempt us from carrying our cross. Even if our feet slip, Jesus picks us up and foots the bill for our healing (Lk 10:34-35).

It's not easy to keep trusting God when our foot slips and we fall. We might wonder: "Why did God let me fall if He's such a loving God?" Instead of looking at our misfortune or the obstacles in front of us, we must simply look at Jesus' feet as we follow His steps. Like Mary of Bethany, we place ourselves at His feet (Lk 10:39). We fix our gaze on the beautiful, nail-scarred feet of Jesus (Is 52:7), kissing His feet in reverence and love (Lk 7:45).

In turn, Jesus washes our feet (Jn 13:5). He sets our feet upon rock and makes firm our steps (Ps 40:3). He removes our hesitation in following Him, so that our stride is unwavering (Ps 18:37). So walk with Jesus and help put Satan under His feet (Heb 10:13).

Prayer: Jesus, "set my feet a-dancing" as I follow You with joy.

Promise: "Happy the man who holds out to the end through trial! Once he has been proved, he will receive the crown of life the Lord has promised to those who love Him." -Jas 1:12

Praise: Tom danced home after going to Confession.

LOOKING FOR A SIGN?

"[The Pharisees] were looking for some heavenly sign from Him as a test. With a sigh from the depths of His spirit He said, 'Why does this age seek a sign? I assure you, no such sign will be given it!' " -Mark 8:11-12

Do you need a sign from God to believe in His power and love? Well, then, despite not giving the Pharisees of His time a sign, the Lord is about to give the world an incredible sign, one that's not easily missed. In two days, hundreds of millions of Catholics worldwide will be walking around with an ashen sign of the cross drawn on their foreheads. No one will be able to avoid this sign. The only question is: Will people of "this age" who are seeking a sign (Mk 8:12) be so "blinded by the god of" this age (2 Cor 4:4), the secular culture which denies the power of God, that they miss the sign paraded in front of them all day?

In "this age," many people have signs on their bodies. People are walking advertisements as they take pride in wearing clothes and shoes with the brand name displayed for all to see. Others wear "body art" in which tattoos cover nearly every exposed inch of skin. Still others use their bodies to glorify God (1 Cor 6:20) as signs for righteousness and evangelization by wearing crosses or medals, dressing modestly, and wearing a cheerful face as a "sign" of a heart that loves God (Sir 13:25).

The oldies song says, "Sign, sign, everywhere a sign." As Lent begins, Jesus sends to the world walking signs bearing His message of crucified love on their foreheads. Disciples of Christ, be signposts who lead the world to Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, use me as Your sign so that those who don't know You might be able to "read the signs of the times" (Mt 16:3).

Promise: "Let Your kindness comfort me according to Your promise to Your servants." -Ps 119:76

Praise: Paula prayed for a sign to know whom she should marry. God gave her roses in winter to confirm her vocation.
