"THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE..."

"Is a lamp acquired to be put under a bushel basket?" -Mark 4:21

Are the benefits you receive from reading the Bible and this book "to be put under a bushel basket or hidden under a bed?" (Mk 4:21) "Is it not meant" for you to share what you have learned? (Mk 4:21) "Let him who has ears to hear Me, hear!" (Mk 4:23)
"Listen carefully to what you hear. In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides" (Mk 4:24). The more you share your faith, the stronger your faith becomes. If you want to understand the Bible much more deeply, share God's word much more often.
If you let your light shine, your light will become brighter. "For God, Who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts, that we in turn might make known the glory of God shining on the face of Christ" (2 Cor 4:6). Share the Word of God more; shine more. Share Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I be "a bright light" that "will shine to all parts of the earth" (Tb 13:11).

Promise: "We should not absent ourselves from the assembly, as some do, but encourage one another; and this all the more because you see that the Day draws near." -Heb 10:25

Praise: St. John Bosco never gave up on any of the young people with whom he met, but always saw an opportunity for God's grace to be revealed.

(Perhaps the opposite of letting our light shine is apathy. To combat apathy in our faith life order our tape "Apathy" on audio AV 61-3 or video V-61.)

FINISHING SCHOOL

"Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins and took His seat forever at the right hand of God; now He waits until His enemies are placed beneath His feet." -Hebrews 10:12-13

Jesus has already won the ultimate victory over Satan, sin, death, hell, slavery, fear, etc. It's over. Jesus is victorious irreversibly. We don't have to wonder about the outcome. As Jesus said on Calvary: "It is finished" (Jn 19:30).
All that's left is to mop up after Jesus' victory by placing His enemies beneath His feet. We do this by first throwing ourselves at Jesus' feet in submission and adoration. In this way, we join in Jesus' victory and refuse to believe the devil's lies or take his bribes. We hasten the day (2 Pt 3:12) when every knee will bend, even Satan's, before Jesus the Lord (Phil 2:10). Jesus is finished. We'll be finished, too, when we place ourselves and Jesus' enemies at His nail-scarred feet.

Prayer: Jesus, I prostrate myself before You as did the wise men (Mt 2:11).

Promise: "Those sown on good soil are the ones who listen to the word, take it to heart, and yield at thirty- and sixty- and a hundredfold." -Mk 4:20

Praise: When his wife became permanently bed-ridden, Alfred counted his blessings and was as loving a husband as ever.

(Gain confidence about Jesus' victory by reading the Bible every day! We have several tape series to help you to do this. "Overview of the Bible" is six audio tapes starting with AV 10A-1 or three videotapes starting with V-10A. "15-minute Bible Teaching - New Testament" is forty audio tapes starting with #700. "An Introduction to each Book of the Bible" is 32 audio tapes starting with AV 21-1 or 17 video tapes starting with V-21.)

WHERE THERE'S GOD'S WILL,THERE'S THE WAY

"I have come to do Your will." -Hebrews 10:9

Jesus' relatives "came to take charge of Him, saying, 'He is out of His mind' " (Mk 3:21). Because His relatives thought He was crazy, you might think Jesus would "mind His manners." Jesus, however, was not one to succumb to pressure in even the slightest way. Jesus then said something He knew would make Him look crazy. When told that His mother, brothers, and sisters were outside, Jesus asked the "crazy" question: "Who are My mother and My brothers?" (Mk 3:33)
Imagine someone telling you your wife was on the phone. What if you said: "Who is my wife?" Wouldn't it make people doubt your sanity, especially if you were already being described as insane? Obviously, Jesus didn't care how He sounded or what people thought. Jesus' concern was not to protect Himself or please people; His total concern was to do the will of His Father (see Mk 3:35). To do the Father's will was Jesus' food (Jn 4:34). He delighted to do the Father's will (see Ps 40:9). When God's will became bitterly painful, Jesus did it anyway. He said and lived: "Not My will, but Thy (the Father's) will be done" (Mt 26:39, our transl.). Jesus did the Father's will, even to death on the cross (see Phil 2:8).

Prayer: Father, I decide to do Your will, especially in the situations where I am tempted to be self-willed.

Promise: "By this 'will,' we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." -Heb 10:10

Praise: Sarah has devoted her life to teaching men and women the beauty of chastity and holiness, writing articles and blogs, and directing educational programs.

THE BORDER OF BLASPHEMY - One Bread, One Body, 1/28/2013

Hebrews 9:15, 24-28, Psalm 98:1-6, Mark 3:22-30

THE BORDER OF BLASPHEMY

"Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. He carries the guilt of his sin without end." -Mark 3:29

The scribes claimed that Jesus was possessed by a devil (Mk 3:30). This statement seems to be blasphemy against Jesus, but Jesus calls it blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Mk 3:29). Blaspheming Jesus is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit bears witness on behalf of Jesus (Jn 15:26; 1 Jn 5:5-6; Rv 19:10). Therefore, if someone says Jesus is not Lord and God, they are saying the Holy Spirit, Who witnesses that Jesus is Lord and God (see 1 Cor 12:3), is not telling the truth and therefore isn't God either.
To avoid blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, we must do more than keep our mouths shut. In a world where millions deny Jesus' lordship and divinity, we "must bear witness as well" on behalf of Jesus (Jn 15:27). Otherwise, our silence will be deafening. By giving Jesus the "silent treatment," we become anti-witnesses and are in league with the blasphemers, if not blasphemers ourselves. If we let Him, the Holy Spirit will teach us on the spot how to witness for Jesus (Lk 12:12). If we refuse to learn, however, we border on blasphemy. Acknowledge Jesus before men and women (Lk 12:8). Publicly and vocally confess Jesus as Lord (Rm 10:9). Be with the Holy Spirit and not against Him.

Prayer: Father, may I speak out of the abundance of a purified heart (Lk 6:45).

Promise: "He will appear a second time not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him." -Heb 9:28

Praise: St. Thomas Aquinas loved the Word of God, both the written and living Word. He memorized many books of Scripture as a young adult.

PM eNewsletter The 3rd Sunday of ordinary time

January 27th Third Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, Your gift of Your presense in the Eucharist should fill us with gratitude and love.

Lord, help us to come and sit with You, and let us do everything we can do to draw others
to Eucharistic Adoration.

Help us to see that everytime we sit with You, You give us a sense of well being, and that
well being helps us walk the talk, and not just talk the talk.

Jesus, help us always be authentic in our lives, by being so in love with You, that You
truly become our center focus, and purpose.

Let us be all that You want us to be, and let us give to all, that all may see the Christ
in us.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday GUESS WHAT HAPPENED AT CHURCH TODAY?
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/27/2013

"...entering the synagogue on the sabbath as He was in the habit of doing..." -Luke 4:16

For nearly thirty years, Jesus had habitually entered the synagogue on the Sabbath to worship
God (Lk 4:16). Then, on one special Sabbath day, the time "of favor" came (Lk 4:19). On that
day, the Holy Spirit anointed and sent Jesus out, Scriptures were fulfilled, Jesus prophesied
in power, and was nearly killed (Lk 4:23ff).

Since Jesus is the same today as He was then (Heb 13:8), He is working in power today, His day,
the Lord's Day. Therefore, we should never be comfortable and complacent walking into Church;
rather, we should approach "the liturgy of the Lord" (Acts 13:2) with trembling, anticipation,
reverence, and awe. At any moment, in any Mass, the Spirit may explode and an international,
earthshaking ministry could be born (see Lk 4:18; Acts 13:2). Great healings (Acts 20:7-12) or
life-changing revelations (Lk 24:30-32) might occur. Miracles will occur, as bread and wine are
being transformed into the body and blood of Jesus, Who is God. The proclaimed Scriptures will
be fulfilled in the lives of many today as Jesus comes alive in their hearts and sets them
free (Lk 4:18).

Today is the Lord's Day, "the first of all days" (Catechism, 2174). "Today is holy to the Lord"
(Neh 8:9). Today the Holy Spirit anoints you (Lk 4:18). Expect today's Mass to be charged with
power as Jesus makes all things new (Rv 21:5) - today.

Prayer: Jesus, may I never be so "familiar" with You that I become like the people of Nazareth
and fail to see You as God.

Promise: "You, then, are the body of Christ. Every one of you is a member of it." -1 Cor 12:27

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). All life, all
holiness comes from You. Alleluia!

This Week's Featured Brochure

The Beatitudes
http://presentationministries.com/brochures/Beatitudes.asp

"The Beatitudes depict the countenance of Jesus Christ and portray His charity." -Catechism of
the Catholic Church, (CCC) 1717

The Beatitudes "are the paradoxical promises that sustain hope in the midst of tribulation." -CCC, 1717

"The Beatitudes reveal the goal of human existence, the ultimate end of human acts." -CCC, 1719

Matthew began the New Testament by repeatedly proclaiming Jesus as God. He called Jesus
"Emmanuel," meaning "God is with us" (Mt 1:23). The wise men prostrated themselves before
Jesus and gave Him homage, which is properly given only to God (Mt 2:11). John the Baptizer
maintained he was preparing the way for Jesus, which was the way of the Lord (God) (Mt 3:3).
Finally, when Satan was tempting the Lord, Jesus claimed to be Lord and God by saying: "You
shall not put the Lord your God to the test" (Mt 4:7).

After this crescendo acclaiming Jesus' divinity, Jesus manifested His power with an awesome
display of healings and deliverances (Mt 4:23-24). He then took His disciples up the
mountain, as the Lord took Moses up the mountain, to give them the new covenant, as
capsulized in the Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus began this sermon with the Beatitudes - eight ways to be blessed. They seem absurd
(see 1 Cor 1:18) because they clash with our lifestyle and many of our ...............................

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

DEFEND LIFE, BUILD PEACE

THE PATH TO PEACE

The path to the attainment of the common good and to peace is above all that of respect
for human life in all its many aspects, beginning with its conception, through its
development and up to its natural end.

"TRUE PEACEMAKERS"

True peacemakers ... are those who love, defend and promote human life in all its
dimensions ... Life in its fullness is the height of peace. Anyone who loves peace cannot
tolerate attacks and crimes against life.

"FALSE PEACE"

Those who insufficiently value human life and, in consequence, support among other things
the liberalization of abortion, perhaps do not realize that in this way they are proposing
the pursuit of a false peace.

Great healings (Acts 20:7-12) or life-changing revelations (Lk 24:30-32) might occur. Miracles will occur, as bread and wine are being transformed into the body and blood of Jesus, Who is God. The proclaimed Scriptures will be fulfilled in the lives of many today as Jesus comes alive in their hearts and sets them free (Lk 4:18).
Today is the Lord's Day, "the first of all days" (Catechism, 2174). "Today is holy to the Lord" (Neh 8:9). Today the Holy Spirit anoints you (Lk 4:18). Expect today's Mass to be charged with power as Jesus makes all things new (Rv 21:5) - today.

Prayer: Jesus, may I never be so "familiar" with You that I become like the people of Nazareth and fail to see You as God.

Promise: "You, then, are the body of Christ. Every one of you is a member of it." -1 Cor 12:27

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). All life, all holiness comes from You. Alleluia!

WHICH DESIRE CONSUMES YOU? - One Bread, One Body, 1/26/2013

Saturday, January 26, 2013, Sts. Timothy & Titus

2 Timothy 1:1-8 or, Titus 1:1-5, Psalm 96:1-3, 7-8, 10, Mark 3:20-21

WHICH DESIRE CONSUMES YOU?

"I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you. The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly Spirit, but rather One that makes us strong, loving, and wise." -2 Timothy 1:6-7

Most of us reading this are baptized and confirmed. Therefore, we already have the Holy Spirit living in us. This indwelling of the Spirit should make us ever more desirous to receive the Spirit in new and deeper ways. However, we could react to our present life in the Spirit by quenching any further desire for the Spirit (see 1 Thes 5:19). Thus, our attitude towards our Baptisms and Confirmations would be something like a vaccination, which makes us immune to the fullness of the Holy Spirit. We must stir into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit (2 Tm 1:6-7). In this way, the Spirit will renew the face of the earth (Ps 104:30).
Do you want a deeper life in the Spirit more than you want anything else? Do you want the Spirit fully blazing in your life more than you want to breathe? Would you pray in an upper room for nine days to receive the Spirit more powerfully? Would you suffer to receive and to give the Spirit in Pentecost after Pentecost? Pray to have a strong, consuming desire for the fullness of the Spirit. "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Jesus, be Lord of my desires.

Promise: "With the strength which comes from God bear your share of the hardship which the gospel entails." -2 Tm 1:8

Praise: St. Titus had a great love for the poor. With eagerness and zeal, he traveled from church to church to collect money so the poor of Jerusalem could have sufficient food (2 Cor 8:16-17).

CHOSEN ONES - One Bread, One Body, 1/25/2013

Friday, January 25, 2013, Conversion of St. Paul

Acts 22:3-16 or, Acts 9:1-22, Psalm 117:1-2, Mark 16:15-18
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012513.cfm

CHOSEN ONES

"This man is the instrument I have chosen." -Acts 9:15

St. Paul was chosen to:
* "bring [God's] name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel" (Acts 9:15),
* "suffer for [Jesus'] name" (Acts 9:16),
* recover his "sight and be filled with Holy Spirit" (Acts 9:17),
* be baptized into Jesus (Acts 9:18; Rm 6:3),
* "proclaim in the synagogues that Jesus was the Son of God" (Acts 9:20),
* silence his opponents "with his proofs that this Jesus was the Messiah" (Acts 9:22),
* know God's "will, to look upon the Just One, and to hear the sound of His voice" (Acts 22:14),
* be God's servant and witness (Acts 26:16), and
* "open the eyes of those to whom" God sent Paul,"to turn them from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God" (Acts 26:18).

You too are chosen by God. You are chosen in many of the same ways that Paul was. You also have been chosen in certain unique ways. The Lord says to you: "It was not you who chose Me, it was I Who chose you to go forth and bear fruit" (Jn 15:16). You are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people He claims for His own" (1 Pt 2:9). "Because you are God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness, and patience" (Col 3:12).
You are a chosen child of God. You are blessed. Your life is very important. You are always loved. You are chosen.

Prayer: Father, may we see many miraculous conversions today.

Promise: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation. The man who believes in it and accepts baptism will be saved; the man who refuses to believe in it will be condemned." -Mk 16:15-16

Praise: St. Paul wrote: "Love never fails" (1 Cor 13:8).

"HOME ALONE?"

Jesus "is always able to save those who approach God through Him." -Hebrews 7:25

Sooner or later, we all come to the conclusion that we are weak. In infancy, we begin life with years of utter dependence on others. As we grow up and become stronger, sickness, failure, sin, and the deaths of others serve as constant reminders of our human weakness, lest we forget our dependence on God. Finally, old age picks up where childhood left off. We progressively become weaker and more dependent on others.
Our human weakness is a serious problem for us. We cope with this by crying out for help. Babies cry to their parents. Later, these parents who have grown old cry out to their babies who have grown up. In our weakness, we depend on each other. Most of all, we depend on the only perfectly dependable One, that is, God. Thus, our human weakness isn't so much of a problem.
Sometimes, however, we feel "home alone," cut off from others and even from God. We feel panic as if we are trapped in our human weakness. However, these feelings of isolation and doom are unfounded. We are never cut off from God, because we can always approach God the Father through Jesus (Heb 7:25). He has torn open forever the veil which had separated us from the holy of holies of His presence (see Mt 27:51; Heb 10:19). In our weakness, God's power can always reach perfection (see 2 Cor 12:9). We need not fear isolation. We are never alone (see Jn 16:32; Mt 28:20).

Prayer: Father, may Your love push the fear of loneliness out of my life (see 1 Jn 4:18).

Promise: "Because He had cured many, all who had afflictions kept pushing toward Him to touch Him." -Mk 3:10

Praise: St. Francis de Sales pastored his flock with gentleness, patience, understanding, and great love.

SHUTTING UP JESUS

Jesus "looked around at them with anger, for He was deeply grieved that they had closed their minds against Him." -Mark 3:5

Yesterday, we read about Jesus' conflict with the Pharisees over the proper observance of the sabbath. Today, we read that Jesus refused to drop the subject of proper sabbath observance. Instead, He decided to bring the conflict to a head by publicly healing on the sabbath (Mk 3:2). The Pharisees' reaction to this confrontation was not repentance. Rather, "they immediately began to plot with the Herodians how they might destroy Him" (Mk 3:6).
Jesus is also calling you to repent. You want Him to drop the subject, but He loves you so much that He will confront you and bring to a head your rebellion against Him. As the Lord calls for your repentance, what will you do?
Jesus is too insistent on repentance for us to ignore Him for too long. We must either repent or get rid of Him. If the Lord would only "mind His own business" and stop insisting we repent, He wouldn't have to be crucified again (see Heb 6:6). Instead, He keeps bothering us. If He only would shut up, we wouldn't have to shut Him up.
What will you do? What will you do to Him? Will it be your repentance or His crucifixion?

Prayer: Father, by repenting may I stop crucifying Your Son and holding Him up to contempt (Heb 6:6).

Promise: "Abraham apportioned to him one tenth of all his booty." -Heb 7:2

Praise: Marcia forgave her husband for committing adultery.

LOVING TO WORK

"Do not grow lazy." -Hebrews 6:12

The Lord could have worked out His plan of salvation without involving us, but He decided to make us parts of His body (see 1 Cor 12:12). He has chosen to accomplish His plan through our lives of good works (Eph 2:10). Therefore, it is extremely important for us to work hard for the Lord. Thus, the Lord commanded us to beg the Harvest Master to send workers into His harvest (Mt 9:38).
Because our work is so important, Satan tries to shut it down. He lies to us by saying our work is so meaningless that it will soon be forgotten by others and even by God. Yet, the truth is that God "will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him by your service, past and present, to His holy people" (Heb 6:10). Another tactic by which the devil tries to slow down or stop our work is planting doubt in us about the reward of our labors. We are tempted to wonder if our work will ever amount to much and even if "our reward will be great in heaven" (see Mt 5:12; 2 Tm 4:8). The truth is that we can be fully assured of that for which we hope and of inheriting God's promises (Heb 6:11-12; Mt 10:41-42). A third tactic Satan uses is to convince us to "take a break," that we have "done our share," and we now need to "take some time for ourselves." However, we "must never grow weary of doing what is right" (2 Thes 3:13).
Resist these temptations. Work hard and harder for the Lord (see Hg 2:4). "Our desire is that each of you show the same zeal till the end" (Heb 6:11).

Prayer: Father, may I work with my whole being for You (Col 3:23). St. Joseph the Worker, pray for me.

Promise: "The Son of Man is Lord even of the sabbath." -Mk 2:28

Praise: St. Vincent made Christ known throughout the Roman Empire and suffered extreme tortures as a testimony of his faith.

THE SCHOOL OF SUFFERING

"He learned obedience from what He suffered." -Hebrews 5:8

What a gift suffering can be! You may be unable to perform physical or mental feats, but you are always able to suffer. Everyone can suffer. Contrary to the "wisdom" of the culture of death, suffering has great value. When everything goes perfectly for you, it's not hard to obey. "What merit is there in that?" (Mt 5:46) Even Satan commented on this when Job was blessed with prosperity, saying "Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing? Have You not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with Your protection? You have blessed the work of his hands" (Jb 1:9-10).
When we can obey God as we suffer, that is a grace in us (see 1 Pt 4:13-14). This is a tremendous witness to others of our belief in the absolute lordship of Jesus. We actually learn obedience from suffering (Heb 5:8). Suffering has such great power that Jesus chose to redeem us through His suffering.
God Himself didn't create suffering, but He allows it for greater purposes. Jesus removes much unnecessary suffering through healings and miracles, but those sufferings He allows we can offer redemptively on behalf of His body (see Col 1:24). It is our joy and privilege to suffer redemptively (Phil 1:29). Through your redemptive suffering, teach a hurting world to obey God.

Prayer: Father, "I consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us" (Rm 8:18).

Promise: Jesus "became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." -Heb 5:9

Praise: St. Agnes accepted the sword of death so that she could maintain her virginity for Christ.

PM eNewsletter Second Sunday in ordinary time

January 20th Second Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, help us to truly realize, that in You, there is no ordinary time.

Everyday, Lord, is a gift, and a call.

A gift, Lord, that says we are loved, and a call that motivates us to help others.

Jesus, let us not feel ordinary, but feel as we really are, special in You.

Lord Jesus, let us see that not only are we special, but all people are special,
and deserve our help and love.

Lord, let our light shine in the midst of all the turmoil, and let us be examples
of steady rock in trusting You.

Father, let our homes be filled with Your peace, and let us truly be at peace
in our hearts.

Jesus, let us help lift the darkness for those who have no peace.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE GLORY OF OBEDIENCE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/20/2013

"His mother instructed those waiting on table, 'Do whatever He tells you.' " -John 2:5

When you run out of wine at a wedding reception, do what Jesus tells you. When you don't see
any way out of all your problems, obey Jesus in detail. When you're in the desert and haven't
entered the Promised Land, obey Jesus without veering to the right or the left (see Dt 5:32).
When you want to do your own thing, do Jesus' thing instead. When you must crush the devil
quickly, obey Jesus (see Rm 16:19-20; 2 Cor 10:6). If you want to save the lives of babies in
the womb, "lean not on your own understanding" (Prv 3:5, our transl.), but do what Jesus says.
If you want to lead your children to Jesus or save your marriage, obey the Lord. When you want
to face death fearlessly, obey Jesus.

Sin entered the world through the disobedience of the one man, Adam, but salvation came
through the obedience of the one man, Jesus (Rm 5:17-19). Obedience is an opportunity,
privilege, and joy (see Ps 40:9). In obedience, we have reason to be hopeful even under the
worst circumstances. In obedience, we imitate Jesus, Who obeyed His Father even to accepting
death on the cross (Phil 2:8).

Life in Christ is the "life of obedience" (1 Pt 1:2). Obedience is the way to victory. Thank
the Lord each day for the privilege of obeying Him.

Prayer: Father, lead me to obey You in ways where I have never obeyed You before.

Promise: "Prophecy is given to one; to another power to distinguish one spirit from another.
One receives the gift of tongues." -1 Cor 12:10

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, the incarnate and eternal Word! Alleluia to the Word made
Flesh! (Jn 1:14)

warehouse. Even though it is hard to continue with this kind of jobs, I have no option at all.
Now the bad thing is that I lost my current job two weeks back. I am searching for new jobs for
two weeks but no fruitful result. As I have so many financial crisis, I need a job at the
earliest. So kindly pray for me to get a good job ASAP. Also, please pray to strengthen my faith
in Jesus and hold him at all times. Thanks

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

SUNDAY AND FREEDOM

... Sunday is the day of the Lord and of men and women, a day in which everyone must be
able to be free, free for the family and free for God. In defending Sunday, we defend
human freedom!

"NO FUTURE"

...Without the family humanity has no future; young people in particular need to learn
the values that give meaning to life, they need to be born into and grow up in that
community of life and love which God Himself desired for men and women.

RECEIVE CHRIST'S GIFT

Dear married couples, by means of a special gift of the Holy Spirit, Christ gives you a
share in His spousal love, making you a sign of His faithful and all-embracing love for
the Church. If you can receive this gift, renewing your "yes" each day by faith, with
the strength that comes from the grace of the sacrament, then your family will grow in
God's love according to the model of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

THE GLORY OF OBEDIENCE

"His mother instructed those waiting on table, 'Do whatever He tells you.' " -John 2:5

When you run out of wine at a wedding reception, do what Jesus tells you. When you don't see any way out of all your problems, obey Jesus in detail. When you're in the desert and haven't entered the Promised Land, obey Jesus without veering to the right or the left (see Dt 5:32). When you want to do your own thing, do Jesus' thing instead. When you must crush the devil quickly, obey Jesus (see Rm 16:19-20; 2 Cor 10:6). If you want to save the lives of babies in the womb, "lean not on your own understanding" (Prv 3:5, our transl.), but do what Jesus says. If you want to lead your children to Jesus or save your marriage, obey the Lord. When you want to face death fearlessly, obey Jesus.
Sin entered the world through the disobedience of the one man, Adam, but salvation came through the obedience of the one man, Jesus (Rm 5:17-19). Obedience is an opportunity, privilege, and joy (see Ps 40:9). In obedience, we have reason to be hopeful even under the worst circumstances. In obedience, we imitate Jesus, Who obeyed His Father even to accepting death on the cross (Phil 2:8).
Life in Christ is the "life of obedience" (1 Pt 1:2). Obedience is the way to victory. Thank the Lord each day for the privilege of obeying Him.

Alleluia to the Word made Flesh! (Jn 1:14)

"MAKE DISCIPLES" (Mt 28:19) - One Bread, One Body, 1/19/2013

Hebrews 4:12-16, Psalm 19:8-10, 15, Mark 2:13-17

"MAKE DISCIPLES" (Mt 28:19)

"As He moved on He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus at his tax collector's post, and said to him, 'Follow Me.' Levi got up and became His follower." -Mark 2:14

Jesus walked into a tax collector's office and said: "Follow Me." He walked into a commercial fishing business and said: "Follow Me" (see Mt 4:19). The first thing, and almost the last thing, Jesus said to Peter was: "Follow Me" (Jn 21:19). Jesus is obviously preoccupied with calling us to follow Him, that is, to be His disciples and make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19).
"Jesus said to all: 'Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in My steps' " (Lk 9:23). To be Jesus' disciples, we must follow Him totally and immediately (Lk 9:57-62). Jesus said: "In the same way, none of you can be My disciple if he does not renounce all his possessions" (Lk 14:33). We must subordinate all relationships, people, possessions, and our very selves to our pre-eminent relationship with Jesus (Lk 14:26, 33).
Do you want to move from being merely a good person, a church-goer, or even a prayerful person to being a disciple of the Lord? If so, renew your Baptism and decide now by God's grace to deny your very self, take up your cross each day, and follow Jesus. Be a disciple and make disciples who disciple others.

Prayer: Father, may I glorify You by bearing much fruit in discipleship (Jn 15:8).

Promise: "God's word is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates and divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart." -Heb 4:12

Praise: Maria quietly and patiently continues to pray for her husband's conversion.

IS IT UNJUST TO BE FORGIVEN? - One Bread, One Body, 1/18/2013

Hebrews 4:1-5, 11, Psalm 78:3-4, 6-8, Mark 2:1-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/011813.cfm

IS IT UNJUST TO BE FORGIVEN?

"The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." -Mark 2:10

God is just, and the world He created is just, although it does not appear to be just at every moment. However, eventually God "will repay every man for what he has done" (Rm 2:6).
God is merciful. He treats us much better than we deserve. He is more than fair, better than just. God is not limited to being just, for His "mercy triumphs over judgment" (Jas 2:13).
Is God's being better than just unjust? Is it contradictory to be both just and merciful? The question in life is not so much: "Why do bad things happen to good people?", but "Why do good things happen to bad people?" God's mercy is more mysterious and therefore more problematic than His justice.
The Lord can be merciful without ignoring justice because He is "our Justice" (1 Cor 1:30). By dying on the cross in our place, Jesus fulfilled "the just demands of the law" (Rm 8:4). By fulfilling justice, He is free to move beyond justice - to mercy. Therefore, when Jesus forgave the paralytic's sin and claimed the authority to forgive sins, He was claiming to be God, our Justice, and even crucified Mercy. Receive God's forgiveness. Abandon yourself to the mercy of God.

Prayer: Father, by faith in Jesus may I rejoice in this season of mercy.

Promise: "Let us strive to enter into that rest, so that no one may fall, in imitation of the example of Israel's unbelief." -Heb 4:11

Praise: Josh repented and reversed his vasectomy. God blessed his family with two more children.

(We can learn to be merciful as God is merciful. MR. UNCLEAN - One Bread, One Body, 1/17/2013

Thursday, January 17, 2013, St. Anthony

Hebrews 3:7-14, Psalm 95:6-11, Mark 1:40-45
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/011713.cfm

MR. UNCLEAN

"Jesus stretched out His hand, touched him, and said: 'I do will it. Be cured.' The leprosy left him then and there, and he was cured." -Mark 1:41-42

Jesus touched the leper and thereby made Himself ritually unclean. This meant Jesus could not go to the Temple or the synagogue. He could not even enter a town until the leper He touched was pronounced to be clean by the priest. This is one of the reasons Jesus told the man to go and present Himself to the priest without telling anyone about what had happened (Mk 1:44). However, "the man went off and began to proclaim the whole matter freely" (Mk 1:45). Eventually, this problem was resolved since Jesus later went into cities and to the Temple.
However, in the end, Jesus returned to the ranks of the unclean. "Jesus died outside the gate, to sanctify the people by His own blood. Let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing the insult which He bore" (Heb 13:12-13). Let us go to the Untouchable One Whose touch frees us from the leprosy of sin. Let us worship the spotless, pure Lamb of God. Let us love the divine Outcast Who has never cast anyone out (Jn 6:37).
Do you realize what Jesus suffered to make us clean? Thank Him forever.

Prayer: Father, I offer my life in thanksgiving for Your love.

Promise: "Encourage one another daily while it is still 'today,' so that no one grows hardened by the deceit of sin. We have become partners of Christ only if we maintain to the end that confidence with which we began." -Heb 3:13-14

Praise: St. Anthony sold all his possessions and lived a life which emphasized that the love of God took precedence over all else.

(Even when we don't think we can find victory in impossible circumstances, Jesus is there for us. Order our tape on "Hope for the Hopeless" on audio AV 63-1 or video V-63.)

GOOD DAY OR GOD'S DAY? - One Bread, One Body, 1/16/2013

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Hebrews 2:14-18, Psalm 105:1-4, 6-9, Mark 1:29-39
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/011613.cfm

GOOD DAY OR GOD'S DAY?

"Rising early the next morning, He went off to a lonely place in the desert; there He was absorbed in prayer." -Mark 1:35

Jesus was tempted to do the right thing at the wrong time in the wrong place. An entire town wanted Jesus to stay put and perform more healings (Mk 1:36-37). He overcame this temptation, refused to stay where He was popular, did His Father's will, and moved on to proclaim the good news (Mk 1:37-38). How many of us fall for the temptation to do good things but not God's thing? Often we are tempted at nine in the morning to do something good that will divert us all day from doing God's will.
Jesus was prepared to overcome this temptation because He had risen early before everyone else to go off to a lonely place in the desert to pray (Mk 1:35). We too will start off the day right if we report for duty and worship first thing in the morning. Then we are on the way to a better-than-good day, to God's day - a day in His perfect will.
It all starts with early morning prayer. "The favors of the Lord are not exhausted, His mercies are not spent; they are renewed each morning" (Lam 3:22). "Morning after morning He opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back" (Is 50:4-5). Jesus is "the Dayspring," the Dawn, Who "shall visit us in His mercy" (Lk 1:78). Offer the first fruits and the first moments of every day to Him.

Prayer: Father, may I be constantly in prayer and in Your will.

Promise: "Jesus likewise had a full share in ours, that by His death He might rob the devil, the prince of death, of his power, and free those who through fear of death had been slaves their whole life long." -Heb 2:14-15

Praise: Martha's crippling arthritis could have led her to bitterness. Instead, she chose to surrender her will to Jesus and learned to depend totally on the Lord for endurance and strength.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE EUCHARIST - One Bread, One Body, 1/15/2013

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Hebrews 2:5-12, Psalm 8:2, 5-9, Mark 1:21-28
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/011513.cfm

SPOTLIGHT ON THE EUCHARIST

"At present we do not see all things thus subject, but we do see Jesus." -Hebrews 2:8-9

I walked to Mass today amid dark clouds and a blustery wind. Because of the cloud cover, the Church was relatively dark for a noon Mass. As the priest lifted the Holy Eucharist at the moment of consecration, a shaft of bright sunlight shone through the stained glass directly onto the altar, flooding the Eucharist in brilliant light. The beam of light continued during the elevation of the Precious Blood. Following the consecration, the clouds again covered the sky. The sun broke through once more, at the instant the consecrated host and cup were lifted at the doxology to close the Eucharistic prayer. After the priest lowered the host and cup, the clouds covered the sun the rest of the day.
We often "walk in the dark valley" (Ps 23:4). We know "all things" are subject to King Jesus, but often we can't see this (Heb 2:8). Instead, what we see is that at least half of the registered Catholics are so uninspired by His eucharistic presence that they can't manage to spend an hour with Him at Sunday Mass (cf Mt 26:40). If we aren't diligent, we might soon join this "other half."
The Eucharist is a "mystery of light" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Pope John Paul II, 6). "We do see Jesus" in the Eucharist (Heb 2:9), yet we must fix our eyes ever more earnestly on Him (Heb 3:1). The more we look at Jesus present in the Eucharist, the more we are able to see His brightness (Jn 8:12). The less attention we pay to Jesus in the Eucharist, the more we focus on the darkness and forget Him (see Jn 3:19-20). Go to Mass frequently, daily if possible. Devote your life to Jesus in the Eucharist.

Prayer: Jesus, Bread of Life (Jn 6:35), fill me with "eucharistic amazement" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Pope John Paul II, 6).

Promise: "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey!" -Mk 1:27

Praise: Josephine spends one or two hours per week in the quiet of God's presence in eucharistic adoration.
