JESUS OR NOTHING
"Apart from Me you can do nothing." —John 15:5

Business leaders understand well the concept of cutting unprofitable activities out of the business process. Sports coaches and athletic trainers also understand cutting out practice drills and plays which are not productive. Farmers don’t waste their limited time on activities which do not increase the yield of crops, flock, or herd. So, Jesus’ teaching on disposing of the branches which don’t bear fruit is well understood by many (Jn 15:6).

What is not as well understood in our culture is the weakness of the human will without the strength of the Lord. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (see Rm 7:18). On our own, our endurance will eventually fade. Only by remaining in Jesus can we bear fruit for Him (Jn 15:4-5). Outside of Jesus, we will ultimately wither and fade (Jn 15:6).

Secular society teaches that the human spirit will triumph on its own effort. It proclaims that education will make you successful. Jesus, on the other hand, states bluntly, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5). Jesus couldn’t make the message any clearer: We either remain in Jesus or wither (Jn 15:4-6).

Prayer: Father, may I never treat Your gracious gift of Your Son Jesus as meaningless (Gal 2:21). I want to spend my life as a Spirit-filled, fruitful disciple.

Promise: "Their story caused great joy among the brothers." —Acts 15:3

Praise: St. Joseph helped dignify labor by serving Jesus daily through his workmanship.

"NO OTHER GODS"
"They shouted frantically, 'We are only men, human like you.' "—Acts 14:15

The first and most basic temptations are to try to be like gods (Gn 3:5), or even to try to be gods. For example, Peter refused to be treated like a god (Acts 10:26), while Herod accepted the title “god” (Acts 12:22-23). Herod, therefore, “died eaten by worms” (Acts 12:23). When Sts. Paul and Barnabas heard the crowd calling them gods by the names of “Hermes” and “Zeus,” they realized how dangerous this temptation was. “They tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd” in order to correct the people’s mistaken attribution of divinity to them (Acts 14:14-15). Contrary to what some cults teach, we are not gods.

Rather than each of us becoming one of the gods, God became one of us. He became a man. Instead of making us man-gods, He became the God-Man. In this way, we don’t become God, but we can have a share in His divine nature (2 Pt 1:4) and “become the very holiness of God” (2 Cor 5:21). We can even have God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, dwell within us (Jn 14:23). We are not gods; we are tabernacles and temples of God (1 Cor 6:19).

Be yourself. Be a human being transformed by the indwelling God.

Prayer: Father, with power may I bear witness for Your risen Son (see Acts 4:33).

Promise: "This much have I told you while I was still with you; the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you." —Jn 14:25-26

Praise: St. Catherine of Siena called the triune God "a Satisfying Food, for You are sweetness and in You there is no taste of bitterness."

THE PEACE OF THE RESURRECTION - One Bread, One Body, 04/28/2024

THE PEACE OF THE RESURRECTION
"The Church was at peace." —Acts 9:31

When the risen Jesus met the women leaving the tomb, He gave the customary Jewish greeting, “Shalom” (Peace) (Mt 28:9). When the risen Jesus met the apostles on the first Resurrection evening, He again said “Shalom” (Peace) (Jn 20:19, 21). Likewise, Jesus wants to give us peace for an Easter present.

Jesus left us peace in His last will and testament. He promised: “ ‘Peace’ is My farewell to you, My peace is My gift to you; I do not give it to you as the world gives peace” (Jn 14:27). His peace is not based on circumstances. His peace can be present even at the funeral home or hospital, in divorce or rejection, and in painful suffering. Jesus wants us to be “at peace before Him no matter what our consciences may charge us with” (1 Jn 3:19-20). Even if we still feel guilty after confessing our sins because of a scrupulous conscience, Jesus will give us a peace we never dreamed possible, a peace “beyond all understanding” (Phil 4:7).

Jesus is our Peace (Eph 2:14). When we surrender to Him by doing His will instead of ours (see Mt 26:39), we make peace. When we surrender in the “battle of wills” between the Lord’s will and ours, we win peace. Win peace, make peace, surrender to Jesus Who is our Peace.

Prayer: Father, may I be a peacemaker (see Mt 5:9) by denying myself and obeying You.

Promise: "I am the Vine, you are the branches. He who lives in Me and I in him, will produce abundantly, for apart from Me you can do nothing." —Jn 15:5

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, Victor over death. "All the families of the nations shall bow down before" You (Ps 22:28).

THE COST OF PENTECOST IS THE _____
"The disciples could not but be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit." —Acts 13:52

In thirteen days, we will begin praying the Pentecost Novena. The Lord intends to give us a renewal of our Baptisms and Confirmations that will truly change the world. In the Holy Spirit, we will receive power (Acts 1:8) and be “clothed with power from on high” (Lk 24:49). In the Holy Spirit, we will do works even greater than Jesus did (Jn 14:12).

Because of our great power in the Holy Spirit, we are a threat to the devil. He will try to stop us by bribing us with fleeting, enslaving pleasures. If that doesn’t work, he attempts to intimidate us by threatening to inflict pain on us and persecute us. Consequently, we must be willing to endure “violent abuse” (Acts 13:45) and even death, rather than compromise the Gospel.

Do you want to receive the Holy Spirit in much greater ways? Knowing that you will receive both power and pain, will you cry out: “Come, Holy Spirit!”? Let us decide to take up the cross, the cost of Pentecost (see Lk 9:23).

Prayer: Father, work in unprecedented glory through the Pentecost Novena this year.

Promise: "Anything you ask Me in My name I will do." —Jn 14:14

Praise: Mary prayed faithfully for many years for Thomas to be converted. On his deathbed, Thomas accepted Jesus as his Savior.

THE PLACE TO BE
"I am indeed going to prepare a place for you." —John 14:3

In building His Church (Mt 16:18), Jesus has prepared a place for each of us. This is the place for which we were created. In this place, our hearts will not be troubled (see Jn 14:1). In our place in the body of Christ, the Church, we will see the power and the glory of God. In our place, we will, by God’s grace and our faith, do greater things than Jesus did (Jn 14:12). Most of us will serve the Lord and His Church for many years. After being good and faithful servants in our place in His Church (Mt 25:21, 23), we will see Jesus keep His promise to “come back to take” us to our final resting place in heaven (Jn 14:3).

Therefore, love Jesus and His Church (Eph 5:25). Know your part in Christ’s Body in as much detail as possible. Take your place in the Church faithfully and fully. Rejoice to be who you are in Christ and in His Body. Proclaim that Jesus has prepared a place in His Church for everyone. No one need waste his life by doing his own thing. We don’t have to be “out of place.” Jesus, by His death, Resurrection, Ascension, and gift of the Holy Spirit, has made a place for us. Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, thank You for the uniqueness and perfection of Your plan for me (see Heb 11:40).

Promise: "We ourselves announce to you the good news that what God promised our fathers He has fulfilled for us, their children, in raising up Jesus." —Acts 13:32-33

Praise: Because of her absolute trust in God, Beth had profound peace when her husband's business went bankrupt.

MARK-ETING THE GOSPEL - One Bread, One Body, 04/25/2024

Thursday, April 25, 2024, St. Mark

1 Peter 5:5-14
Psalm 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17
Mark 16:15-20

MARK-ETING THE GOSPEL
"Signs like these will accompany those who have professed their faith: they will use My name to expel demons, they will speak entirely new languages, they will be able to handle serpents, they will be able to drink deadly poison without harm, and the sick upon whom they lay their hands will recover." —Mark 16:17-18

By saying “signs like these” (Mk 16:17), Jesus means that the signs and marvels He mentioned above are only a few of the signs He will work to confirm our proclamation of the Gospel. In many other ways, Jesus backs up those who spread His Word.

When Jesus backs up our evangelization, we call this a “confirmation” of the word we have shared. “The Lord [continues] to work with” us as we witness to Him and confirms “the message through the signs” He chooses (Mk 16:20). A sales representative would be delighted if the president of her company confirmed her sales presentations to her clients. We who witness for Jesus have an even greater marketing confirmation service. Think of it! “The God of all grace...will Himself...confirm” us as we witness to Him (1 Pt 5:10).

The Lord is the same today as yesterday (Heb 13:8). As He has backed up St. Mark’s preaching, so He will confirm our evangelization and preaching in the hearts of our listeners. If signs and confirmations of the Gospel are not commonplace today, one possible reason may be that we aren’t spreading the Gospel as the Lord wants us to. He will back us up. Therefore, “go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation” (Mk 16:15).

Prayer: Father, pour out Your love in my heart (Rm 5:5) so that I find delight in speaking of You (see Acts 4:20).

Promise: "Cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." —1 Pt 5:7

Praise: St. Mark listened to the Holy Spirit and became the first person to present the Good News of Jesus in the incredibly fruitful form of a Gospel.

Essential Guide To Safe Well Water Maintenance

If your home relies on well water, ensuring its safety and quality is your direct responsibility. Contaminated well water can harbor harmful bacteria, viruses, and chemicals that pose serious health risks. This comprehensive guide will arm you with the knowledge and best practices to maintain your well and ensure your family's drinking water is safe.

Why Well Water Maintenance Matters

  • Health Protection: Well water must be free from contaminants that can cause illness, particularly for vulnerable populations like infants, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems.
  • Long-Term Well Functionality: Preventative maintenance prolongs the life of your well system, reducing costly repairs and replacements.
  • Peace of Mind: Staying on top of well inspection and management allows you to trust the water you drink and use.

Key Steps for Maintaining Your Well

1. Well Construction and Location

  • Professional Installation: Hire licensed well drillers to ensure proper construction, preventing surface water contamination.
  • Safe Site: The well should be situated away from potential contamination sources like livestock areas, septic systems, or chemical storage.
  • Uphill Placement: Wells installed on a slope should be uphill from contamination sources.

2. Regular Well Inspections

  • Annual Checkups: Schedule yearly inspections with a qualified well contractor to assess your system's overall condition.
  • Look for Changes: Monitor your well for any signs of damage, including cracks in the casing, a damaged or missing well cap, or pooling water near the wellhead.
  • Professional Assistance: If you detect any issues, contact a well professional immediately for repair.

3. Water Testing

  • Annual Testing (Minimum): Test your water for bacteria and nitrates at least once a year with a certified lab.
  • Contamination Suspicions: Immediately test your water if you notice changes in taste, odor, or color.
  • Nearby Activities: Test more frequently if activities near your well increase the risk of contamination (e.g., agriculture, new construction).

4. Maintaining the Wellhead

  • Secure and Sanitary Well Cap: Ensure your well cap is tightly sealed and free of cracks. It should have a vermin-proof screen over the vent.
  • Ground Slope: The ground around the well should slope away to prevent water pooling.
  • Keep it Clear: Maintain a clutter-free area around the well to limit pest habitats and simplify inspection.

5. Protecting Your Well from Contamination

  • Safe Distances: Keep known contamination sources (septic systems, livestock, fertilizer storage) well away from your well, following your local regulations for distances.
  • Mindful Chemical Use: Avoid using pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers near the well.
  • Proper Waste Disposal: Never dispose of hazardous, chemical, or medical waste near your well.

Additional Tips

  • Well Records: Keep detailed records of well construction, testing results, and any repairs or maintenance.
  • Treatment Systems: If water tests indicate contamination, consider installing a suitable water treatment system.
  • Unused Wells: Decommission abandoned wells according to professional guidelines to protect groundwater.

The Importance of Professional Well Contractors

Always seek the expertise of licensed well contractors and pump installers for construction, repairs, and in-depth inspections. They possess the knowledge and tools to keep your well system operating effectively and safely.

By diligently following these guidelines, you'll significantly safeguard your family's health and ensure the longevity of your well water supply.

FATHER'S DAY
"The Father Who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to speak. Since I know that His commandment means eternal life, whatever I say is spoken just as He instructed Me." —John 12:49-50

When we say we believe in Jesus, we are believing not only in Him but also in God the Father (Jn 12:44). When we see Jesus, we see the Father (Jn 12:45; 14:9). When we hear the words of Jesus and obey Him, we are hearing and obeying the Father, for the Father has commanded Jesus “what to say and how to speak” (Jn 12:49). Jesus said: “The Father and I are One” (Jn 10:30).

Jesus became a man to reveal our Father to us (Lk 10:22) and to show us the Father’s love (Jn 15:9). By His death and Resurrection, Jesus gave us the opportunity to have a new nature and be adopted by God the Father (see Rm 8:15). He made it possible for us to be sons and daughters of God the Father (see 1 Jn 3:2). Jesus then taught us to pray “Abba” (“Father”). Jesus is the only Way for us to go home to our Father (Jn 14:6). Jesus has shown us the Father, and that is enough for us (see Jn 14:8).

Prayer: Abba...

Promise: "After they had fasted and prayed, they imposed hands on them and sent them off." —Acts 13:3

Praise: St. Fidelis, a Franciscan priest from Germany, gave up his law career to follow the example of St. Francis of Assisi and serve the poor. Sent to preach against a group of Calvinists in Switzerland, he was ambushed and martyred.

Praise: St. Fidelis, a Franciscan priest from Germany, gave up his law career to follow the example of St. Francis of Assisi and serve the poor. Sent to preach against a group of Calvinists in Switzerland, he was ambushed and martyred.

"CAUSE FOR REJOICING" (1 Pt 1:6)
"He rejoiced to see the evidence of God's favor." —Acts 11:23

I was just handed several letters from readers of One Bread, One Body (OBOB). Each letter was an encouragement from a faithful reader who uses OBOB during prayer time, and each person expressed their gratitude, encouragement, and love. These readers are like St. Barnabas, offering encouragement for us to remain firm in our commitment to produce OBOB (see Acts 11:23).

These letters cause us to rejoice as we “see the evidence of God’s favor” (Acts 11:23). Many of you who read OBOB have committed yourselves to daily prayer and Scripture reading. You attend Mass as often as possible. As one of the letter writers expressed, when unable to attend Mass, she joins in on a Mass on the TV or radio.

You joyfully spread God’s Word and witness to Jesus from the abundant love of your hearts (Lk 6:45). One writer exclaimed: “I love to spread the Word whenever I get the chance.”

We give thanks to God for you (1 Thes 1:2; Col 1:3; Phil 1:3) and rejoice in your fruitfulness for the Lord. In love, we “beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus...to make still greater progress” (1 Thes 4:1). You are doing great things; in Jesus you can do greater things than ever before (Jn 14:12). Continue to “give...evidence” of your love and fruitfulness for Jesus (see Lk 3:8).

Prayer: Father, thank You for the cloud of witnesses with which You surround us (Heb 12:1). "How wonderfully [we] cherish the holy ones" who love You (Ps 16:3).

Promise: "My sheep hear My voice. I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life." —Jn 10:27-28

Praise: St. George was a tribune who became a soldier for his Lord.

HEAR THE HOLY SPIRIT TODAY
"God has granted life-giving repentance even to the Gentiles." —Acts 11:18

It might seem that the controversies of the first-century Church could be dry reading to modern eyes. However, the way this particular controversy, told in today’s first reading, was handled by the Church meant that ultimately everyone reading this teaching now has the opportunity to be saved!

If the members of the early Church were not listening closely to the Holy Spirit, they could have closed their hearts to the leading of the Spirit, relied on the historical precedent of their forefathers, and decided that only practicing Jews could be Christians (see Acts chapters 11 and 15).

This would mean that most of us would be excluded from God’s Kingdom, unless we converted to Judaism. However, “God has granted life-giving repentance even to the Gentiles,” that is, to non-Jews (Acts 11:18). Now everyone has access to Jesus and to eternal life (see Eph 3:8-12).

If you were aware that the decisions you make today would impact the salvation of people two thousand years from now, how would you act? Hopefully, you would be moved to listen attentively to the Holy Spirit today (Gal 5:25). “Today, if you hear His voice, harden not your hearts” (see Heb 3:15; cf Ps 95:7-8). It may be only one person that would receive salvation by observing you; nonetheless that person might lead thousands to salvation. Therefore, live for Jesus today so others will live for Him in the future (see Ps 22:31-32).

Prayer: Father, grant that we would listen and obey today so that people of future generations will choose to live for Jesus.

Promise: "I came that they might have life and have it to the full." —Jn 10:10

THE LIFE OF A SHEEP
"I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." —John 10:11 "I am the Good Shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me." —John 10:14

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and we are His sheep. To be called a sheep is not a compliment. Sheep are sheepish, that is, backward and timid. Sheep can’t even eat grass without destroying the field where the grass grows. That’s one of the reasons they need shepherds to move them elsewhere. When Jesus called us “sheep,” He implied that we weren’t just weak but helpless. Apart from Him we can do nothing (Jn 15:5).

We sheep, who are so helpless, have a hard time living under the easiest circumstances. What will we do in difficult and dangerous circumstances? Thieves are coming “only to steal and slaughter and destroy” us (Jn 10:10). Wolves are trying to snatch, scatter, and kill us (Jn 10:12). Some of these wolves are in sheep’s clothing (Mt 7:15), so some of those we consider our friends are actually our enemies. Furthermore, some of our shepherds upon whom we are counting to protect us are merely hired hands who will abandon us and leave us to be slaughtered (Jn 10:12).

We sheep are simple, weak, and in a “heap of trouble.” Our only Hope is Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Follow Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, Good Shepherd, lead me through the valley of the shadow of death (Ps 23:4, RSV-CE).

Promise: "See what love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called children of God! Yet that is what we are." —1 Jn 3:1

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who holds "the keys of death and the nether world" (Rv 1:18). Praise You, Good Shepherd, that no one can snatch us out of Your hand (Jn 10:28). Alleluia forever!

STEPS RIGHT UP
The Church "was being built up and was making steady progress in the fear of the Lord." —Acts 9:31

The Lord leads us step by step, from grace to grace (see Jn 1:16, RSV-CE), and from glory to glory (2 Cor 3:18). For example, St. Peter took a very important step forward when he obeyed the ascending Christ by devoting himself to constant prayer prior to Pentecost (Acts 1:14). Then he took the giant step of receiving the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, and witnessing for the risen Christ to thousands of people (Acts 2:4ff). These steps prepared Peter to heal the man lame from birth (Acts 3:7). Peter grew through these various steps to the point that he let the Lord heal people even through his shadow (Acts 5:15-16). Later, the Lord used Peter to heal a man who had been paralyzed for eight years (Acts 9:33-34). This was an immediate preparatory step toward raising Tabitha from the dead (Acts 9:40).

After raising the dead, Peter may seem to have reached the top of the steps. However, a higher step was the conversion of the Gentiles, beginning with Cornelius and his family (Acts 10:44). To a Jew, this was more unthinkable than raising from the dead. Peter took still more steps, as when the Lord freed him from death row shortly before his planned execution (Acts 12:11). Eventually, the Lord took Peter up several other flights of stairs — all the way to martyrdom and heaven.

Keep stepping with Jesus. Since one step leads to another, not stepping means cutting ourselves off from God’s divine plan. Jesus says and keeps saying: “Step right up.”

Prayer: Father, I will obey You by taking today's step so I can be in position to take tomorrow's step.

Promise: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe; we are convinced that You are God's Holy One." —Jn 6:68-69

AMAZING GRACE - One Bread, One Body, 04/19/2024

AMAZING GRACE
"Lord, I have heard from many sources about this man..." —Acts 9:13

Those who consider religion boring must not know the Lord God. He is constantly doing stupendous, amazing things.

  • Jesus appeared to Saul, the fiercest opponent of Christians. With great power, Jesus converted him into the greatest evangelist (Acts 9:15ff).
  • At the very time that some Catholics are losing faith in their Church, many Protestants are converting to the Catholic Church. Some Protestant pastors have even brought their entire congregations with them into the Church.
  • Youth are populating the pro-life movement in large numbers, bringing new vigor and hope to veteran pro-lifers.
  • Men’s movements abound with testimonies of men set free from alcoholism, sexual sins, and other compulsions. Their marriages, families, and faith have been made new.

Have you ever felt that any individual or group is beyond God’s power to change? Do you feel trapped in a situation that appears to have no way out? Is your hope fading? “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1) and renew your hope in Him. The Lord is a God of wonders. “Nothing is more apt to confirm our faith and hope than holding it fixed in our minds that nothing is impossible with God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 274). His ways are incredibly far above our ways (Is 55:8-9). There is always hope, and “this hope will not leave us disappointed” (Rm 5:5). “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor 2:9).

Prayer: Jesus, You can do immeasurably more than I ask or imagine (Eph 3:20). Give me great confidence in You (2 Cor 3:4).

Promise: "He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up on the last day." —Jn 6:54

Praise: Jane reached out in love to an unwed mother, who then joyfully became Catholic through Jane's sponsorship.

How To Get Rid of iron In Well Water

If you're struggling with rusty-looking stains on your sinks, a metallic taste in your water, or concerns about the safety of your well, the culprit is likely excess iron. Several proven methods exist to remove iron from your well water, including filtration, aeration, and oxidation. Understanding the causes of iron in your well and the various removal solutions empowers you to make the best decision for your home.

Iron naturally occurs in soil and rocks. As rainwater percolates through the ground, it can dissolve iron minerals, carrying them into your well water. This issue is particularly common in areas with naturally iron-rich geology or if you have older well components that may be corroding.

How Does Iron Get Into My Well Water?

The primary way iron enters well water is through natural processes. Groundwater seeps through iron-rich soil and rock formations, dissolving iron minerals along the way. Additionally, older well casings, pipes, or pumps made of iron-based materials can gradually rust, contributing to elevated iron levels in your well water.

What Problems Does Iron in Well Water Cause?

  • Staining: Iron in well water is notorious for leaving unsightly reddish-brown stains on your plumbing fixtures, sinks, tubs, laundry, and even dishes.
  • Metallic Taste and Odor: You may notice an unpleasant metallic taste or even a rusty odor in your drinking water and in beverages made with it.
  • Appliance Damage: Over time, iron buildup can clog pipes and reduce the lifespan of water heaters, dishwashers, and other appliances.
  • Potential Health Concerns: While iron is an essential nutrient, the EPA notes that excessive long-term consumption could pose health risks, primarily for individuals with certain medical conditions.
  • Iron Bacteria: Iron in well water can promote the growth of iron bacteria, leading to slimy buildups and a worsening of taste, odor, and clogging issues.

How Do I Test for Iron in My Well Water?

  • DIY Kits: Simple home test kits provide a basic indication of iron presence, but they may not be accurate enough for precise decision-making.
  • Professional Lab Testing: For comprehensive results and critical information about your exact iron levels and other water quality parameters, send a water sample to a certified lab. Local health departments or water treatment companies can often help you find testing services.

What Are the Best Ways to Remove Iron from Well Water?

  • Filtration Systems

    • Sediment Filters: These basic filters can remove some larger iron particles, but may be insufficient for higher iron levels.
    • Iron-Specific Filters: Specialized filters with various media types trap and remove iron effectively, making them a popular treatment solution.
    • Water Softeners: Traditional water softeners can remove small amounts of iron through ion exchange, but are more focused on addressing water hardness.
    • Maintenance: Regardless of the filter type, regular replacement according to the manufacturer's instructions and monitoring your water quality with testing will ensure continued effectiveness.
  • Aeration

    • Process: Aeration injects air into the water, oxidizing soluble ferrous iron into insoluble ferric iron, making it filterable.
    • Best for: Aeration is ideal for high iron levels and is often combined with filtration for optimal results.
  • Chemical Oxidation (Chlorination)

    • Process: Chlorine injection oxidizes iron and disinfects the water. Filtration then removes the oxidized particles.
    • Considerations: Chlorine can affect water taste, requiring additional filtration steps, and needs careful handling due to its potential hazards.
  • Other Methods

    • Reverse Osmosis: This removes a wide range of contaminants, including iron, but may be less cost-effective for targeting iron specifically.
    • Distillation: Similar to reverse osmosis, it's very effective but may not be practical as a primary solution for whole-house iron removal.

How Much Does Iron Removal Cost?

The cost to remove iron varies greatly depending on:

  • Iron Level: Higher iron concentrations may require more complex treatment systems.
  • Water Usage: The size of your household and water demand impact system capacity needs
  • Chosen Method: Simple filters are less expensive, while aeration or chlorination systems have higher upfront and potential maintenance costs.
  • DIY vs. Professional: Professional installation adds expense but is often recommended for complex setups.

Can I Remove Iron from My Well Water Myself?

The possibility of DIY installation depends on your skill level and the chosen method. Installing basic sediment filters or under-sink iron filters can be within a homeowner's capability. For whole-house systems, aeration, or chlorination, professional consultation and installation are usually the safest and most reliable route.

HEAVENLY FOOD
"Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died. This is the Bread that comes down from heaven for a man to eat and never die." —John 6:49-50

When it comes to food, God provides and man derides. God gave Adam and Eve all kinds of good food in the garden of Eden (Gn 2:16). Sadly, their craving to eat beyond what God provided led to mankind’s downfall (Gn 3:6ff).

God then provided miraculous manna to the Israelites when they were stranded in the desert (Ex 16:14ff). He “furnished them bread from heaven, ready to hand, untoiled-for, endowed with all delights and conforming to every taste” (Wis 16:20). The manna even “was blended to whatever flavor each one wished”! (Wis 16:21) All this revealed God’s sweetness toward His children (Wis 16:21). However, the Israelites in the desert soon wearied of this miraculous, tasty fare. They were “disgusted with this wretched food” (Nm 21:5) that God provided. They wanted meat, fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic (Nm 11:4-5).

Then, God once again provided His children with miraculous Bread from heaven. The infant Jesus came down from heaven and was placed in a manger, a feeding trough. This reveals that Jesus is Food. His “flesh is real food” (Jn 6:55). To make it unmistakable, Jesus proclaims: “I am the Bread of Life...I Myself am the Living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world” (Jn 6:48, 51). Jesus in the Eucharist is God’s ultimate banquet. Will we reject this heavenly food? Or, will we gratefully eat what God provides?

Prayer: Father, may what enters and leaves my mouth be totally under Your lordship.

Promise: "Philip launched out with this Scripture passage as his starting point, telling him the good news of Jesus." —Acts 8:35

Praise: Jesus set Sam free from an addiction to pornography. Now Sam is active in the fight to defend life

CHANGING LEMONS INTO LEMONADE
"The members of the church who had been dispersed went about preaching the word." —Acts 8:4

When the early Christians were chased out of Jerusalem, they went to other towns and chased out unclean spirits. When the Church was paralyzed and crippled from being persecuted, the wounded Church healed the paralytics and cripples. While the Christians mourned the deaths of martyrs, cities rejoiced because they heard and accepted the Gospel (see Acts 8:1-8).

The Lord works everything together for the good of the Church (see Rm 8:28). “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rm 8:31) The One in us is greater than the prince of this world (see 1 Jn 4:4; Jn 14:30). God’s wounded become healers. “The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 852, Tertullian). “Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed” (2 Cor 4:10). “There is no chaining the word of God!” (2 Tm 2:9)

“Despite the increase of sin, grace has far surpassed it” (Rm 5:20). “When I am powerless, it is then that I am strong” (2 Cor 12:10). “In all this we are more than conquerors because of Him Who has loved us” (Rm 8:37).

Prayer: Father, change my mourning into dancing (Ps 30:12).

Promise: "No one who comes will I ever reject." —Jn 6:37

Praise: Often criticized for his "old-fashioned" ways, Fr. Bill preaches the truth from the pulpit, being an unpopular voice amidst the permissiveness of the culture of death.

The Israelites were wandering in the desert without food. They complained to Moses and Aaron, saying it would have been better to eat the food of slavery than to die of famine in the freedom of the desert (Ex 16:2-3). In His mercy, God sent heavenly bread, which the Israelites called manna, to feed His people for forty years until they could eat of the produce of the promised land (Ex 16:13ff).

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus explained that the manna foreshadowed what God the Father was doing through Him. Jesus was sent from heaven to give life to the world (Jn 6:33). Jesus taught the crowd that He was the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35). The Father sent Him to feed His people with His flesh and thereby give them life in this world until they join the eternal banquet in the heavenly promised land.

The Israelites faced the choice of starving to death in the desert or eating the manna that God provided. However, most of us will not starve today if we don’t receive the Eucharist — or so we think. Would you prefer to starve spiritually as long as you were living comfortably? Let us place ourselves amongst the Israelites in the desert. Jesus bluntly states that if we don’t eat the heavenly manna, the Eucharist, we have no life in us (Jn 6:53). “Open your mouth and eat what” God gives you (Ez 2:8). Be as hungry for the Eucharist as if you were starving in the desert.

Prayer: Father, change my desires so I only want to eat according to Your menu.

Promise: "I Myself am the Bread of Life." —Jn 6:35

Praise: The Edgingtons bring their large family to daily Mass. They have prioritized Mass for their children over participation in sports.

THE TRUTH IS NOT NEGOTIABLE
"The way of truth I have chosen." —Psalm 119:30

Jesus, the Truth (Jn 14:6), stood for the truth. He paid for this stand with His life, as His opponents used deceit, lies, and intimidation of witnesses to condemn Him to death. St. Stephen stood for the truth (Acts 6:8ff). He paid for this stand with his life, as his opponents likewise used similar tactics to condemn him to death.

The Catholic Church stands for the truth, regardless of whether or not the truth is “politically correct.” The Church proclaims the truths that Jesus is really present in the Holy Eucharist, that marriage is only between one man and one woman, that homosexual acts and fornication are always sinful, that abortion is murder, that the poor have a special dignity and must be defended, that contraception is sinful and contrary to God’s plan, and other unpopular truths.

In this culture of death and throughout human history, those dedicated to a cause contrary to the truth have generally refused to repent and humbly submit themselves to the truth. These opponents of the truth instead change the language to “call evil good, and good evil” (Is 5:20). These people try to intimidate others into exchanging “the truth of God for a lie” (Rm 1:25).

People of God, imitate Jesus and St. Stephen. “Even to the death fight for truth, and the Lord your God will battle for you” (Sir 4:28). The truth is not negotiable. Speak the truth in love (see Eph 4:15). “The truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32).

Prayer: Father, "we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the sake of the truth" (2 Cor 13:8). Give Your Church and its members Your very own strength.

Promise: "This is the work of God: have faith in the One Whom He sent." —Jn 6:29

I’LL PASS - One Bread, One Body, 04/14/2024

I'LL PASS
"Everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms had to be fulfilled." —Luke 24:44

Wouldn’t it have been a wonderful thing to have walked with Jesus and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus? We would have heard every Scripture in the Old Testament that prophesied about Jesus’ Passion, death, and Resurrection.

Well, the Church has just read to us in the daily liturgies of Lent many of those same Old Testament Scriptures that Jesus opened up for the disciples (Lk 24:27). The disciples passed those Scriptures on to many others; these Scriptures have since been passed on by the Church, all the way down to us.

During Easter, we focus on celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus. The Lord Himself, however, testifies: “If [you will] not listen to Moses and the prophets, [you] will not be convinced even if one should rise from the dead” (Lk 16:31). Faith in the risen Jesus comes through hearing the Word of God (Rm 10:17). Therefore, during this season of Easter, attend Mass as frequently as possible, even daily, to hear the Word of God. Meditate on this Word day and night (Ps 1:2; Jos 1:8). Treasure it in your heart (Lk 2:19). Devour the prophetic Word during this season of Easter (Jer 15:16).

What kind of passing will you do with the Lenten and Easter Scriptures that prophesy about Jesus? Will you pass them on to those you meet? Or will you merely pass them up, and let new life in Christ pass you by?

Prayer: Father, give me a heart to seek You, ears to hear You, and the will to worship, love, and serve You.

Promise: "God raised [Jesus] from the dead, and we are His witnesses." —Acts 3:15

Praise: "O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is Your name over all the earth!" (Ps 8:2) Alleluia to You, risen Lord Jesus, our Savior!

IMMEDIATELY - One Bread, One Body, 04/13/2024

John 6:16-21

IMMEDIATELY
"They wanted to take Him into the boat, but suddenly it came aground on the shore." —John 6:21

The apostles in the boat saw Jesus walking on the water in the middle of the dark night (Jn 6:19). They wanted to take Jesus into the boat, but it suddenly came aground on the shore (Jn 6:21). St. John, the author of this passage, had spent much of his life in a fishing boat. John adds that the boat suddenly landed on the shore, which apparently surprised the apostles. John is emphasizing that Jesus can speed things up.

Jesus triumphs over our fears and the storms in our lives. He tells the fearful apostles, and us: “It is I. Do not be afraid” (Jn 6:20). Another possible translation for “It is I” is “I AM,” the divine name of God (Ex 3:14). Since I AM rules over everything, do not be afraid. Jesus is Lord of the storm (Mk 4:38ff).

The storm may look fierce. Nonetheless, are we looking at the storm or at Jesus? What storms are raging in your life at present? What storms are you encountering in your parish, home, neighborhood, job, etc?

Even if we are oppressed by governments, rulers (see Dn 3:13ff), public opinion or bosses, by fixing our eyes on Jesus and on heaven, the oppression can quickly come to an end, even immediately, “suddenly” (Jn 6:21). The key is to fix our eyes on Jesus (Heb 3:1). By keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus (Heb 12:2), time seems to pass differently (see Eccl 3:1, 11), even immediately.

Be still and know that He is God (Ps 46:11). Be still and let the Lord fight for you (Ex 14:14).

Prayer: Jesus, I come to Your throne for timely help (Heb 4:16).

Promise: "The eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear Him, upon those who hope for His kindness, to deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine." —Ps 33:18-19

Praise: Pope St. Martin I accepted the faith, the papacy, torture, imprisonment, and martyrdom.

MULTIPLICATION TESTS - One Bread, One Body, 04/12/2024

MULTIPLICATION TESTS
"He knew well what He intended to do but He asked this to test Philip's response." —John 6:6

When Jesus saw several thousand people “coming toward Him, He said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ ” (Jn 6:5) “He asked this to test Philip’s response” (Jn 6:6).

Jesus sees several billion people who don’t know Him personally and therefore don’t even have the chance to love Him. Then, to test you, Jesus says to you: “Where will you and I obtain hundreds of thousands of workers for this harvest?” (see Mt 9:37) What will you say to Jesus? What will you do? Will you pass the test?

Jesus sees over nine million babies being killed by surgical and chemical abortion in the USA each year. To test you, He says to you: “What are we going to do about it?” Will you pass the test, or be bogged down in the apparent statistical impossibility of stopping Planned Parenthood and its henchmen?

Jesus sees countless broken marriages, single parents, fatherless children, broken hearts, refugees, abused people, oppressed people, sick people, etc. What are you and Jesus going to do about it? Don’t tell Jesus that you’re only one person, you don’t have much money, you’re not famous, you’re too old or too young, or nobody else is doing anything. Give Jesus all your loaves, all your fish, and all your life. Pass the test.

Prayer: Father, I give You my seemingly insignificant "all" to be multiplied into Your sufficiency.

Promise: "Day after day, both in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah." —Acts 5:42

Praise: Joan volunteered for thirty-five years to spread the Good News, right until her death.
