DOWN FOR THE COUNT

"Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the Lord: 'I have sinned grievously.' " -2 Samuel 24:10

David committed serious sin in his life. For example, he committed adultery and arranged for the husband of his mistress to be killed. One of David's worst sins was not so spectacular. Against God's will, David counted the number of men fit for military duty in Israel and Judah. This sin resulted in the deaths of 70,000 of King David's innocent people (2 Sm 24:15).

Counting can be a calling from God, but it can also be a sin. For example, counting the times we've been offended can be a sin against love (see 1 Cor 13:5). Counting money can be a sin of greed. Counting people in your church, ministry, or prayer group can be a sin of pride. Counting someone out may be a sin of unforgiveness or arrogance. Even counting our blessings can be a way of comparing ourselves to others.

When we were little children, someone taught us to count. Nonetheless, have we ever learned to count responsibly and not sinfully? Jesus is the divine Accountant. Let Him audit your books, and take over your life.

Prayer: Father, count me in on salvation, evangelization, and eternal happiness.

Promise: "I said, 'I confess my faults to the Lord,' and You took away the guilt of my sin." -Ps 32:5

Praise: Of St. John Bosco Pope Pius XI said, "In his life the supernatural became natural and the extraordinary the ordinary."

THE CULTURE OF DEATH - One Bread, One Body, 1/30/2018

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

2 Samuel 18:9-10, 14, 24-25, 30-19:3, Psalm 86:1-6, Mark 5:21-43

THE CULTURE OF DEATH

"If only I had died instead of you, Absalom my son, my son!" -2 Samuel 19:1

Nathan, the prophet, had revealed to David that David's sin of adultery would result in many deaths (see 2 Sm 12:10). The child conceived through David's adultery died (2 Sm 12:18). Amnon followed in the footsteps of David, his father, by committing the sexual sin of raping his sister Tamar (2 Sm 13:14). Absalom, Tamar's brother, took vengeance on Amnon and murdered him (2 Sm 13:28-29). Years later, Absalom started a civil war against his father. In the final battle of the war, "the casualties there that day were heavy - twenty thousand men" (2 Sm 18:7), including Absalom. When David heard of Absalom's death, he "was shaken, and went up to the room over the city gate to weep. He said as he wept, 'My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!' " (2 Sm 19:1)

"The wages of sin is death" (Rm 6:23) - more sin, more deaths, still more sin, and thousands of deaths for generations. Resist temptations. Don't sin.

Prayer: Father, raise us from the death of sin.

Promise: "Daughter, it is your faith that has cured you. Go in peace and be free of this illness." -Mk 5:34

Praise: Jesus healed Teresa of cancer.

LOVE THE CAPTIVES INTO JESUS

"Shimei...was coming out of the place, cursing as he came. He threw stones at David." -2 Samuel 16:5-6

Shimei behaved toward King David like Satan and his demons behave toward the people of God. Shimei threw curses and stones at David, kicking David while he was at the lowest point in his life. Shimei did his best to drive the king out of town (see 2 Sm 16:7). The Gerasene townspeople likewise drove Jesus, a King greater than David, out of town (Mk 5:17).

Why do people choose hell over heaven, and Satanic possession over the Kingdom of God? It's because they don't know Jesus. He seems more frightful to them than does Satan. The Gerasene people knew the terror of the devil from the demoniac's occupation of their road. However, the power and love of Jesus "terrorized" the Gerasenes more than did the familiar demons. All these people knew was terror, and they chose the familiar terror of demonic possession instead of the "terror" of Jesus' liberating love that would require them to change their lives.

So it is with many caught up in the lifestyle of this culture of death. Just the thought of living a holy lifestyle brings terror to their minds and hearts. Forgiving enemies, living in chastity, tithing - these and other aspects of discipleship fill them with fear and terror. Although many have endured lives of being captive in abusive relationships, fear, and sin, they choose the familiar over the presumed terror of God's unknown kingdom.

How much these people need to know the loving mercy of Jesus! That is exactly why God has put you into the lives of these people. We have work to do to make Jesus known. Our job is not easy. Therefore, receive the power of the Holy Spirit and the patience, forgiveness, and gentleness of Jesus.

Prayer: Father, You have anointed me to set the captives free (Lk 4:18) and love them into Your arms. Pour out Your Spirit on me.

Promise: "You, O Lord, are my Shield." -Ps 3:4

Praise: A friend invited Martha to Mass and Jesus changed her life.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday CRADLE CATHOLICS
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/28/2018

"The married man is busy with this world's demands and occupied with pleasing his wife. This
means he is divided." -1 Corinthians 7:33

Many of you who read One Bread, One Body are married. Today's second reading seems to imply
that marriage is a limited vocation because a married person is not able to be both married
and "busy with the Lord's affairs" (1 Cor 7:32).

It is important, however, to read this passage in its context. St. Paul believes that Jesus
will return shortly (1 Cor 7:29, 31). If "the time is short" (1 Cor 7:29), then it is vital
to commit all efforts to converting "as many as possible" (1 Cor 9:19) before Jesus returns.
Long-term endeavors such as marriage and family could not meet the short-term need to
evangelize full-force.

However, Jesus did not return in Paul's lifetime. The early Church then realized that its
members needed to "make disciples" (Mt 28:19) by bearing and raising godly children
well-trained in the faith. In this context, married persons have an integral and
irreplaceable part in "the Lord's affairs." They have the unique advantage of a long-term,
nurturing, loving, and discipling relationship with their children that cannot be forged by
any other member of the body of Christ. Paul then realized that God is so pleased by this
kind of marriage that He considers it to be a reflection of His own love for the Church
(Eph 5:31-32).

Prayer: Father, may all married couples build up the body of Christ and thereby be devoted
"entirely to the Lord" (1 Cor 7:35).

Promise: "The people were spellbound by His teaching because He taught with authority, and
not like the scribes." -Mk 1:22

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, for loving us perfectly, even while we were still sinners
(Rm 5:8). All glory be to You forever!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

MOST PRECIOUS GIFT

The gift of the Mother, the gift of every mother and every woman, is most precious for the Church,
for she too is a mother and woman. While a man often abstracts, affirms and imposes ideas, a woman,
a mother knows how to "keep", to put things together in her heart, to give life.

"A MOTHER'S HEART"

If our faith is not to be reduced merely to an idea or a doctrine, all of us need a mother's heart,
one which knows how to keep the tender love of God and to feel the heartbeat of all around us.

THE PEACE OF JESUS

May the Mother of God, God's finest human creation, guard and keep this year, and bring the peace
of her Son to our hearts and to the world.

THE NAKED TRUTH - One Bread, One Body, 1/27/2018

Saturday, January 27, 2018, St. Angela Merici

2 Samuel 12:1-7, 10-17, Psalm 51:12-17, Mark 4:35-41
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012718.cfm

THE NAKED TRUTH

"You are the man!" -2 Samuel 12:7

From a distance, David saw the beautiful Bathsheba bathing. Instead of looking away, he looked lustfully at her (2 Sm 11:2). This led to adultery, murder, and the death of an innocent child. If David had not repented after being confronted by Nathan (2 Sm 12:7ff), his lustful looks could have resulted in the destruction of the nation.

When Jesus tells us to gouge out our eye rather than look lustfully, He's doing us a favor (Mt 5:28-29). He's sparing us not only the eternal pains of hell, but also terrible destruction in this life. It doesn't seem that serious at first. Is looking at a suggestive scene or a half-clothed woman that bad? God's Word says: "Once passion has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin reaches maturity it begets death" (Jas 1:15). "As for lewd conduct or promiscuousness or lust of any sort, let them not even be mentioned among you; your holiness forbids this" (Eph 5:3). "Make no mistake about this: no fornicator, no unclean or lustful person - in effect an idolater - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God" (Eph 5:5).

"Let no one deceive you with worthless arguments. These are sins that bring God's wrath down on the disobedient; therefore have nothing to do with them" (Eph 5:6-7). "Whoever rejects these instructions rejects not man, but God Who sends His Holy Spirit upon you" (1 Thes 4:8).

Prayer: Jesus, I accept You as Lord of my eyes, feelings, hormones, and sexuality.

Promise: "Who can this be that the wind and the sea obey Him?" -Mk 4:41

Praise: The death of St. Angela's older sister prompted her to pray for her sister's soul and led Angela to consecrate her life to God's service.

ONE FOR THE MONEY - One Bread, One Body, 1/26/2018

Friday, January 26, 2018, Sts. Timothy & Titus

2 Timothy 1:1-8 or, Titus 1:1-5, Psalm 96:1-3, 7-8, 10, Mark 4:26-34
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012618.cfm

ONE FOR THE MONEY

"May grace and peace from God our Father, and Christ Jesus our Savior, be with you." -Titus 1:5

Many Catholics first get involved with the Church through money - such as helping with various fundraisers. Some Catholics serve as ushers, taking up the collection baskets at Mass. Others count or deposit the collection. Still others serve the Church as accountants, business managers, or on parish finance councils. St. Titus is a good patron saint for these faithful people.

One of the primary ministries of St. Titus was to accompany St. Paul on a relief mission. As a response to the prophecy of Agabus about a worldwide famine (Acts 11:28), St. Paul set off throughout Asia Minor and Greece to take up a collection for the suffering people of the Holy Land, much like every Pope does today. Titus served as essentially a "captain" of Paul's fundraising team. He concentrated especially on the collections in Greece and Macedonia (2 Cor 8:16-23).

The Church needs trustworthy men and women who raise funds, but even more, who also raise faith. Praise God for these blessed servants! St. Titus also combined fundraising with faith-raising. He was trustworthy and remained attracted to God rather than money (Mt 6:24). Yet Titus understood that working with money was an important part of the ministry God gave him. Rather than shrink back from this responsibility, Titus stepped forward with zeal, faith, and charity (2 Cor 8:16ff). Titus, unlike Judas Iscariot, was trustworthy in using money for God's Kingdom and not for selfish gain. Be a Titus.

Prayer: Father, I place all the money You have given me into Your hands.

Promise: "May grace, mercy, and peace be yours from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord." -2 Tm 1:2

Praise: "Thanks be to God, Who has put an equal zeal for you in the heart of Titus!" (2 Cor 8:16)

THE THIRD DAY OF BLINDNESS - One Bread, One Body, 1/25/2018

Thursday, January 25, 2018, Conversion of St. Paul

Acts 22:3-16 or, Acts 9:1-22, Psalm 117:1-2, Mark 16:15-18
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012518.cfm

THE THIRD DAY OF BLINDNESS

"I have been sent by the Lord Jesus Who appeared to you on the way here, to help you recover your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." -Acts 9:17

After "a light from the sky suddenly flashed about" Saul (Acts 9:3), he was "unable to see, even though his eyes were open" (Acts 9:8). Many people, even Christians, have open eyes but are blinded spiritually by the god of the present age (2 Cor 4:4).

After Ananias "laid his hands on Saul" (Acts 9:17), "immediately something like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. He got up and was baptized" (Acts 9:18). Sin has caused scales to form on the eyes of our hearts (see Eph 1:18) so as to obstruct our vision. Saul was healed on the third day of his blindness (see Acts 9:9). Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. The scales fall from our eyes when we are baptized into Jesus' death and Resurrection (Rm 6:3ff) or when we renew our Baptisms through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Moreover, through the laying on of hands in the Sacrament of Confirmation or through a renewal of our Confirmation, the Holy Spirit gives us the light and power to see.

Let us live in baptismal and confirmational light. Let us never blind ourselves through sin. Let us live in the light of the paschal mystery. "There was a time when you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Well, then, live as children of light" (Eph 5:8).

Prayer: Father, may I accept Your grace to open the eyes of the blind.

Promise: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation. The man who believes in it and accepts baptism will be saved; the man who refuses to believe in it will be condemned." -Mk 16:15-16

Praise: "He who was formerly persecuting us is now preaching the faith he tried to destroy" (Gal 1:23). Praise You, Jesus, for your sovereign power in converting St. Paul!

PUTTING GOD IN A BOX? - One Bread, One Body, 1/24/2018

Wednesday, January 24, 2018, St. Francis de Sales

2 Samuel 7:4-17, Psalm 89:4-5, 27-30, Mark 4:1-20

PUTTING GOD IN A BOX?

"Should you build Me a house to dwell in?" -2 Samuel 7:5

David had the desire to do something great for God. Surely David's motivation was well-intentioned. Yet God never asked for a house or temple (2 Sm 7:7).

Thank God for church buildings, for homes in which Jesus is enthroned as Lord, for business buildings dedicated to the glory of God. Almighty God, however, cannot be contained. When Solomon, David's son, completed the building of the Temple, Solomon himself recognized that even the heavens, and the highest heavens, could not contain the God of the universe (1 Kgs 8:27). Mysteriously, this awesome God was contained in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the flesh of Jesus. Now the Lord is contained in the tabernacle, in the host of the Holy Eucharist. Moreover, this awesome, cosmic Lord actually dwells within us (see Jn 6:56; 17:23).

So although God cannot be contained, He often allows Himself to be contained and hidden. However, he lets Himself be contained not to be limited and put in a box, but rather for the purpose of living through us, flowing out of us as a river of life (see Gal 2:19-20). Let us seek to be holy, as befitting someone within whose heart Jesus lives.

Prayer: Father, may I be a walking tabernacle, bringing Your Son Jesus into every place I go.

Promise: "Let him who has ears to hear Me, hear!" -Mk 4:9

Praise: St. Francis spent all of his time between Masses preparing for the next.

CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENTS - One Bread, One Body, 1/23/2018

Tuesday, January 23, 2018, St. Marianne Cope St. Vincent of Saragossa

2 Samuel 6:12-15, 17-19, Psalm 24:7-10, Mark 3:31-35
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012318.cfm

CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENTS

"David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the City of David amid festivities." -2 Samuel 6:12

When David brought the ark of God to Jerusalem, he gave the distinct impression that God was really present at the ark. After every six steps of the procession with the ark, David "sacrificed an ox and a fatling" (2 Sm 6:13). Then David, the king of the nation, put on his dancing clothes and "came dancing before the Lord with abandon" (2 Sm 6:14). The musical accompaniment for all this was "shouts of joy and to the sound of the horn" (2 Sm 6:15). "Then David offered holocausts and peace offerings before the Lord" (2 Sm 6:17). Finally, he blessed the crowd and gave each person "a loaf of bread, a cut of roast meat, and a raisin cake" (2 Sm 6:18-19).

When we enter a church building or receive Holy Communion, what impression do we give? Would an observer of our actions conclude that we believed Jesus' Body and Blood were in the tabernacle? When we receive Communion, does it look as if we are receiving God Himself into our persons? We may not sacrifice fatlings, dance with abandon, play the horn, or bake a few thousand raisin cakes, but in some visible way we should express our faith that the Lord's most intense presence on this earth is in Holy Communion. "We have that spirit of faith of which the Scripture says, 'Because I believed, I spoke out' " (2 Cor 4:13). If we believe we're receiving Jesus, God Himself, in Holy Communion, we should show it.

Prayer: Father, may my worship inspire believers and challenge unbelievers.

Promise: "Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me." -Mk 3:35

Praise: St. Marianne left her hospitals in New York and answered the call to serve lepers in Hawaii.

WATER AND BLOOD - One Bread, One Body, 1/22/2018

Monday, January 22, 2018

2 Samuel 5:1-7, 10, Psalm 89:20-22, 25-26, Mark 3:22-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012218.cfm

WATER AND BLOOD

"Here we are, your bone and your flesh." -2 Samuel 5:1

David became king of the tribes of Israel because they were his flesh and blood. They considered it desirable to have their own kin as their ruler, for "blood is thicker than water."

However, in the new covenant, the waters of baptism are thicker than the blood of natural relationship. In other words, the blood of Jesus is thicker than the blood of human kinship. That's why Jesus left His mother and relatives to invest His life in His apostles. He said: "Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me" (Mk 3:35). On another occasion, after a woman "called out, 'Blest is the womb that bore You and the breasts that nursed You,' " Jesus made the same point, saying: "Rather...blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it" (Lk 11:27-28). Jesus also taught: "If anyone comes to Me without turning his back on his father and mother, his wife and his children, his brothers and sisters, indeed his very self, he cannot be My follower" (Lk 14:26).

Jesus calls us to make our baptismal relationships the highest priority. For instance, we should see our wives not only as wives but as baptized sisters in the Lord. Our children are more than just our children. We are united to them through the waters of Baptism and the blood of Jesus. Furthermore, we see strangers differently since both of us may have been "baptized into one body" (1 Cor 12:13). Our unity in Jesus' kingship is more important than our kinship. Living out our baptisms in Christian community is the priority which strengthens all our relationships.

Prayer: Father, may my vocation help me to better live out my baptism and vice versa.

Promise: "David grew steadily more powerful, for the Lord of hosts was with him." -2 Sm 5:10

Praise: After reading an article in a Catholic publication, all doubts Rich had about the existence of God disappeared. His faith became so strong that he was eventually ordained to the priesthood, in which he has served faithfully for over fifty years.

PM eNewsletter 3rd Sunday in ordinary time

January 21st The third Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, we celebrate the conversion of St. Paul this week.

Help us to always be converting to a more intimate relationship to You.

Help us see that in the life of service that You call us to, that we have to keep renewing our
committments to You.

We can never be satisfied until like You, in true faith we can walk on water.

Help us, Christ, to be always and everywhere trying to be more apostalic in our lives and more
evangelical in our being You to others.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday DROP EVERYTHING
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/21/2018

"Jesus said to them, 'Come after Me.' " -Mark 1:17

Jesus is here. Drop everything. Imitate the Ninevites who stopped the workings of their whole
society in order to fast, put on sackcloth, and repent (Jon 3:5). When Simon and Andrew met Jesus,
they dropped their fishing business (Mk 1:18). James and John did the same thing in addition to
leaving behind their father, Zebedee (Mk 1:20).

Because Jesus is here and will come again in glory, husbands should live as though they did not
have wives (1 Cor 7:29), that is, they should at times temporarily abstain from marital relations
so that they can pray and fast (1 Cor 7:5). Those who are weeping or rejoicing (1 Cor 7:30) should
stop thinking about how they feel, because "the time is short" (1 Cor 7:29) and "the kingdom of God
is at hand" (Mk 1:15, our transl). Moreover, those who are buyers and involved in the world's system
(see 1 Cor 7:30-31) need to start financial planning foar the time when a person will not be allowed
"to buy or sell anything unless he was first marked with the name of the beast" (Rv 13:17). "The
world as we know it is passing away" (1 Cor 7:31).

Christ has died. Drop everything. Christ is risen. Drop everything. Christ will come again. Drop
everything. Jesus is Lord!

Prayer: Father, free me from being possessed by my possessions.

Promise: "Repent and believe in the gospel." -Mk 1:15, our transl.

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life! (Jn 11:25) I rejoice in You forever!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

WELCOME, LOVE, HELP

All life, from life in the mother's womb to that of the elderly, the suffering and the sick, and to
that of the troublesome and even repellent, is to be welcomed, loved and helped.

WHAT GOD WANTS US TO BE

... Mary is what God wants us to be, what He wants His Church to be: a Mother who is tender and
lowly, poor in material goods and rich in love, free of sin and united to Jesus, keeping God in our
hearts and our neighbor in our lives. To set out anew, let us look to our Mother. In her heart beats
the heart of the Church.

LEAVE BEHIND USELESS BAGGAGE

Devotion to Mary is not spiritual etiquette; it is a requirement of the Christian life. Looking to
the Mother, we are asked to leave behind all sorts of useless baggage and to rediscover what really
matters.

A MIRACLE OF UNSELFISHNESS - One Bread, One Body, 1/20/2018

Saturday, January 20, 2018, Pope St. Fabian St. Sebastian

2 Samuel 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27, Psalm 80:2-3, 5-7, Mark 3:20-21

A MIRACLE OF UNSELFISHNESS

"David seized his garments and rent them, and all the men who were with him did likewise. They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan." -2 Samuel 1:11-12

David had experienced a very eventful week. Ziklag, the city in which David resided, had been "burned to the ground" by the Amalekites (1 Sm 30:3). The wives, sons, and daughters of David and his followers had been taken captive (1 Sm 30:3). "David found himself in great difficulty, for the men spoke of stoning him, so bitter were they over the fate of their sons and daughters" (1 Sm 30:6). Nonetheless, David led his followers on an exhausting march in pursuit of the Amalekites (1 Sm 30:10). He overtook them, miraculously defeated them, and recovered everyone and everything (1 Sm 30:18-19).

After this series of traumatic events, a messenger informed David that King Saul and his son, Jonathan, had been killed in a battle against the Philistines. Naturally, David was preoccupied with his own concerns, and considering that Saul had tried to kill David on several occasions, you would think that David would get some satisfaction from Saul's death or at least be relieved by it. However, David mourned deeply not only for the death of his friend Jonathan, but even for the death of his enemy, Saul (see 2 Sm 1:11ff). David's mourning was a miracle of unselfishness, which prefigured the unselfish, crucified, holy love Jesus has made possible for us to have in the new covenant. Be holy as Jesus is holy (1 Pt 1:16).

Prayer: Father, may I look to others' interests rather than my own (Phil 2:4).

Promise: "Rouse Your power, and come to save us." -Ps 80:3

Praise: Pope St. Fabian's holiness was a lasting example for both clergy and laity.

THE ANOINTIANS ARE COMING - One Bread, One Body, 1/19/2018

Friday, January 19, 2018

THE ANOINTIANS ARE COMING

"I will not raise a hand against my lord, for he is the Lord's anointed." -1 Samuel 24:11

Saul was hunting David down to kill him (1 Sm 24:12). Despite this, David refused to kill Saul when Saul was defenseless before him (1 Sm 24:8). Although David had no reservations about killing his enemies, even when defenseless, he did not kill Saul because Saul was "the Lord's anointed" (1 Sm 24:7, 11). David even "regretted that he had cut off an end of Saul's mantle" (1 Sm 24:6) because Saul was "the Lord's anointed."

In some of the greatest prophecies of the Old Testament, the Lord promised the coming of "the Anointed One," the Christ, the Messiah, Who would definitively save Israel from its enemies. Jesus is the Fulfillment of that prophecy. He is the Christ, and we who have been baptized into Him (see Rm 6:3) share in His anointing. We are "the anointed ones," that is, Christians (see 1 Jn 2:27). In His anointing, we have an exalted dignity. We Christians are the most important people in the world, and are to be revered even more than David revered Saul. In awe and respect, let us lay down our lives in love for Christ, the Anointed One, and for Christians, the anointed ones (see 1 Jn 3:16).

Prayer: Father, may I be submissive to other Christians because I have an awe and fear of You (see Eph 5:21).

Promise: "He named twelve as His companions whom He would send to preach the good news; they were likewise to have authority to expel demons." -Mk 3:14-15

Praise: Max quit believing the lie that his homosexual acts were okay. He accepted the grace to live chastely. He then began leading others with similar tendencies to the person of Jesus.

JEALOUS RAGE - One Bread, One Body, 1/18/2018

Thursday, January 18, 2018

1 Samuel 18:6-9; 19:1-7, Psalm 56:2-3, 9-13, Mark 3:7-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/011818.cfm

JEALOUS RAGE

"Saul was jealous of David." -1 Samuel 18:9

Saul went to sleep jealous; he woke up demon-possessed (1 Sm 18:10). Cain also slept on his jealousy (Gn 4:5). He later committed the first homicide and fratricide. The religious leaders of Jesus' time were jealous of Him. They refused to put their jealousy to death. Instead, they put God to death after brutally torturing Him (Mt 27:18).

Many religious leaders after Jesus' time have continued to crucify Jesus and hold Him up to contempt (Heb 6:6) by persecuting His followers (see Acts 9:5). They have done this for the same reason that their forebears killed God - jealousy (see Acts 13:45).

Jealousy is very deadly. It was the motive for the first murder and the worst murder. In jealousy, we have killed both men and God. Jealousy is one of the oldest strongholds of the evil one (see 2 Cor 10:4), and it is stronger than ever today.

"Do you suppose it is to no purpose that Scripture says, 'The spirit He has implanted in us tends toward jealousy'? Yet He bestows a greater gift" (Jas 4:5-6). Therefore, by God's grace, "never act out of rivalry or conceit; rather, let all parties think humbly of others as superior to themselves, each of you looking to others' interests rather than to his own" (Phil 2:3-4).

Prayer: Father, make me so secure in Your love that I will resist the temptation to be jealous.

Promise: "Because He had cured many, all who had afflictions kept pushing toward Him to touch Him." -Mk 3:10

Praise: Antonio practiced humility until it became habitual.

(For a related teaching, order our tape "Jealousy" on audio AV 53-3 or video V-53.)

THE LORD OF THE GIANTS - One Bread, One Body, 1/17/2018

Wednesday, January 17, 2018, St. Anthony the Abbot

1 Samuel 17:32-33, 37, 40-51, Psalm 144:1-2, 9-10, Mark 3:1-6
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/011718.cfm

THE LORD OF THE GIANTS

"Go and fight." -1 Samuel 17:32

How many giants have you killed? If the answer is "none," ask yourself another question: "How many giants have you fought?" Usually the answer to the second question is the same as the first. We've killed no giants because we haven't had the faith, courage, and love to fight any.

Every man in the Israelite army refused to fight the giant Goliath. "Then David spoke to Saul: 'Let your majesty not lose courage. I am at your service to go and fight this Philistine.' But Saul answered David, 'You cannot go up against this Philistine and fight with him' " (1 Sm 17:32-33). If we volunteer to fight a giant, all those who are fearful will put us down in order to justify their fear.

However, our response should not be focused on defending ourselves, accusing the fearful, or sizing up the giants. We must focus on the Lord to be giant-killers. Thus, David's words in response to Saul were: "The Lord...will also keep me safe" (1 Sm 17:37). Also, when the giant Goliath insulted, cursed, and threatened him, David responded: "I come against you in the name of the Lord" (1 Sm 17:45). David ended his speech by proclaiming: "The battle belongs to the Lord" (1 Sm 17:47, our transl).

To kill a giant, you must fight one. To fight one, you must not focus on the giant, yourself, or anyone else. Fix your eyes on the Lord Jesus (see Heb 12:2).

Prayer: Lord, the bigger You are, the harder they fall. Lord, the battle belongs to You, and I belong to You.

Promise: "The man did so and his hand was perfectly restored." -Mk 3:5

Praise: By resisting the devil (Jas 4:7), St. Anthony learned how to fight spiritual battles.

PARALYZED OR ENERGIZED?

"How long will you grieve?" -1 Samuel 16:1 "How can I go?" -1 Samuel 16:2

Next week is the forty-fifth anniversary of the legalization of abortion by the U.S. Supreme Court. This decision has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of millions of people. Because of the many millions dead, we are tempted and shocked into giving in to despair and apathy. However, the Lord says to us: "How long will you grieve?...Be on your way" (1 Sm 16:1). Let us get on with life by living as Christ's anointed ones, that is, as Christians, and encouraging others to do the same.

The culture of death will be displaced by a civilization of love and life. Our future is full of hope (Jer 29:11), for by His death and Resurrection, Jesus has already robbed "the devil, the prince of death, of his power" (Heb 2:14). Jesus has total victory and is seated "forever at the right hand of God; now He waits until His enemies are placed beneath His feet" (Heb 10:12-13). Let us hasten the acceptance and application of Jesus' victory as widely as possible so that as few as possible will be casualties. By living totally and fully for Christ, we will "win over" to Christ "as many as possible" (1 Cor 9:19). We will snatch people even from falling into the fire of hell (see Jude 22). Go, anointed ones, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, give me a fiery zeal to evangelize for life.

Promise: "That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the sabbath." -Mk 2:28

Praise: Sr. Roberta is living totally and fully for Christ. She repeatedly offers her life in consecration to Jesus.

UNDER THE BAN

"Fight against them until you have exterminated them." -1 Samuel 15:18

Saul, king of Israel, was ordered by the prophet Samuel to put the Amalekites "under the ban" (1 Sm 15:3). This meant that Saul was to kill every Amalekite person and animal. In the light of Christ and His new covenant, we no longer think in terms of solving problems by committing genocide. However, the concept of putting things "under the ban" is important in our Christian discipleship. In putting something under the ban, you fight it until you "get it all," as a doctor would fight against cancer. Likewise, we are to put Satan and sin under the ban.

We cannot presume that we can handle "a little bit of cancer." If we are satisfied getting rid of 90% of the cancer in our body, we are mistaken. The cancer will grow back if we let it keep a foothold. The presence of sin in our lives is the same. We are to "fight against it until we have exterminated it" (see 1 Sm 15:18).

The Spirit fights against sin and the flesh and the devil (Gal 5:17). Therefore, a major part of this fight is to receive the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22) and let the Spirit take control of our entire life. We put off the old flesh, the old lifestyle, represented by the old wineskin (Mk 2:22) and let Jesus make all things new, fresh, and healed. Put your old lifestyle under the ban. Let the Spirit recreate you in Jesus (2 Cor 5:17).

Prayer: Father, may I no longer allow the things of the world to have any influence in my life. I am all Yours.

Promise: "He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies Me; and to Him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God." -Ps 50:23

Praise: Jerome, a young man single for the Lord, spends his free time in Eucharistic adoration, leading worship, leading a youth group, and being involved with Christian community.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday OUR ONLY HOPE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/14/2018

"Look! There is the Lamb of God!" -John 1:36

For generations we have fashioned a culture of death - step by step, war by war, abortion by abortion,
injustice by injustice, sin by sin. Our seeds of unfaithfulness, lust, and greed have grown into a
sickeningly rich harvest of injustice. Is there any hope?

In Christ alone there is hope. He is the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29).
Jesus is "the Messiah! (This term means the Anointed)" (Jn 1:41) and "Rabbi (which means Teacher)"
(Jn 1:38). He is "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (Jn 14:6). He will call our names
(see 1 Sm 3:4) and change our names (see Jn 1:42). Jesus will bring good news to the poor, "proclaim
liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind and release to prisoners, to announce a year of
favor from the Lord" (Lk 4:18-19). Jesus is bringing down the culture of death and replacing it with
a civilization of love and life.

There is hope; there is certain hope in Jesus - in Jesus alone. Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, thank You for Jesus: Life and Hope.

Promise: "You must know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, Who is within - the Spirit you
have received from God. You are not your own. You have been purchased, and at a price. So glorify God
in your body." -1 Cor 6:19-20

Praise: Praise the risen, eucharistic Jesus! Alleluia! "To Him be glory forever and ever" (2 Tm 4:18).

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

"MOST IMPORTANT"

Mother of God is the most important title of Our Lady.

GOD IS CLOSE TO US

To call Mary the Mother of God reminds us of this: God is close to humanity, even as a child is
close to the mother who bears him in her womb.

"BELOVED CHILDREN"

Ours is the joy of knowing that our solitude has ended. It is the beauty of knowing that we are
beloved children, of knowing that this childhood of ours can never be taken away from us. It is
to see a reflection of ourselves in the frail and infant God resting in His mother's arms, and to
realize that humanity is precious and sacred to the Lord. Henceforth, to serve human life is to
serve God.
