NO BENEFITS IN THE CONTRACT - One Bread, One Body, 10/1/2008

What does the Bible say about money and the economy? This booklet written
by Fr. Lauer seems to be good reading at this point in time.

NO BENEFITS IN THE CONTRACT

"Someone said to Him, 'I will be Your follower wherever You go.' Jesus
said to him, 'The foxes have lairs, the birds of the sky have nests, but
the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.' " —Luke 9:57-58

Today when people decide to follow Jesus, we often tell them that they're
going to have not just a new life but a better lifestyle. In a church of
padded pews, carpeted sanctuaries, and air-conditioned cathedrals, we find
it incongruous to talk as Jesus did. He did not even promise His followers
a roof over their heads, but we promise them prosperity, comfort,
possessions, and enjoyment. Jesus does sometimes improve a person's
lifestyle, but He avoids making that an incentive for following Him.

In fact, Jesus gives no incentives to follow Him. Although He could
promise us the ultimate prosperity of heaven, He doesn't seem to emphasize
this when He calls us to follow Him. He isn't calling us to follow heaven
or not to follow hell. He calls us to follow Him.

When Jesus calls a person to Himself, He calls them to the cross — to
suffering, death, and unconditional love. The true follower of Jesus does
not try to get anything out of following Jesus but tries to get out of
that selfish attitude. When Jesus became a man and died for us, He didn't
need anything from us. He did it because He loved us. We must respond
accordingly.

Prayer: Jesus, may I love You unconditionally, even if I suffer as Job
did.

Promise: "He does great things past finding out, marvelous things beyond
reckoning." —Jb 9:10

Praise: St. Therese took as her motto that of St. John of the Cross: "Love
is repaid by love alone."

REST ASSURED

"For then I should have lain down and been tranquil; had I slept, I should
then have been at rest." —Job 3:13

Jesus wants to be Lord of our sleep. He plans to use our sleep both to
advance His kingdom and to bless us with sufficient rest. Satan also has
plans for our sleep, since it occupies nearly one-third of our lives. In
addition to the sleep we lose through the activity of children or
neighbors, Satan attempts to rob us of more sleep by tempting us to worry
(see Eccl 5:11), fear (Sir 40:5-7), or anger (Eph 4:26ff). When we need to
fall asleep, we instead lay awake and fret. This gives the devil a chance
to operate on us (see Eph 4:27) and further his sabotage of God's kingdom.

We really need discernment in the area of sleep. At times we are called to
do without some sleep. The author of 2 Maccabees spent many "sleepless
nights" writing the word of God (2 Mc 2:26). Like Jesus, we can be called
to intercede and pray long into the night (Mt 14:23, 25). At other times,
we sleep when we should be attentive to the Lord (see Mt 26:40ff; Prv
6:9ff; 1 Sm 3:1ff). Conversely, we often are called to sleep, but we
won't. We stay up late entertaining ourselves or working for perishable
food (Jn 6:27) when God our Father wants to provide for us. "It is vain
for you to rise early, or put off your rest, you that eat hard-earned
bread, for He gives to His beloved in sleep" (Ps 127:2).

If we give our lives to the Lord and live by His teaching, He will tell
us: "When you lie down, you need not be afraid, when you rest, your sleep
will be sweet" (Prv 3:24; see also Prv 19:23; 1 Sm 2:8). In His peace, we
gratefully respond: "As soon as I lie down, I fall peacefully asleep, for
You alone, O Lord, bring security to my dwelling" (Ps 4:9). "Sleep in
heavenly peace."

Prayer: Father, like Jesus, may I sleep soundly even in the violent storms
of my life (Mt 8:24-25).

Promise: Jesus "firmly resolved to proceed toward Jerusalem." —Lk 9:51

Praise: St. Jerome translated the Hebrew Scriptures into Latin.

A DATE WITH AN ANGEL

"I solemnly assure you, you shall see the sky opened and the angels of God
ascending and descending on the Son of Man." —John 1:51

As important as he is now, the archangel Michael will be even more
important to us at the world's end. "At that time there shall arise
Michael, the great prince, guardian of Your people; it shall be a time
unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time" (Dn 12:1).
Possibly Gabriel's and Raphael's ministry will be even more crucial as the
world's end approaches. We definitely need Michael's victory, Gabriel's
revelation, and Raphael's healing now. We may need them even more in the
future.

Are you getting to know Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael? Do you talk to
them? Do you ask them to serve you? (see Heb 1:14) By the time we die or
the world ends, these three archangels should be our friends. We're going
to need all the help we can get, but it's hard to accept help from total
strangers. There are myriads of angels (Dn 7:10), but we know only the
names of Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The Lord revealed to us their
names so we can get to know them. Don't ignore these three awesome
creatures who have accepted God's call to serve us. We need them. Each
day, talk to one of them about what the Lord wants him to do in serving
you. You will see that these angels love you, and you will come to know
and love them.

Prayer: Father, thank You for every part of Your plan of salvation. Thank
You for creating me to need angels.

Promise: "Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled
against the dragon." —Rv 12:7

Praise: Raphael tells us: "Thank God! Give Him the praise and the glory.
Before all the living, acknowledge the many good things He has done for
you, by blessing and extolling His name in song" (Tb 12:6).

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE THIRD SON
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=9/28/2008

"Son, go out and work in the vineyard today..." —Matthew 21:28

The first son did nothing for his father except displease and
disrespect him. The son's initial "Yes" translated into
nothing being done for the vineyard that day; in addition, it
put the father a full day behind in chores to be done in the
vineyard (Mt 21:29).

The second son did the father's will, yet not perfectly in all
respects. The father, however, was satisfied. The vineyard
chores were done, and the father, though wounded by the
son's disobedience and rebelliousness, found joy in the son's
repentance and ultimate obedience (Mt 21:30).

There is a third Son in this story. He is Jesus, the Storyteller,
the Son of God (Jn 1:49). This Son did His Father's will
obediently, instantly, and lovingly. Speaking of His
relationship with His Father, Jesus said: "I always do what
pleases Him" (Jn 8:29).

Our "attitude must be that of Christ" (Phil 2:5). Be so
caught up in love with our heavenly Father as to eagerly
seek and fulfill His every desire. Repent of displeasing and
disobeying the Father. Tell Him "Yes." Then go out, work
in His vineyard, and bear fruit that will endure for His glory
(Mt 21:28; Jn 15:8, 16).

"Therefore submit to God; resist the devil and he will take

Satan is real. He is a fallen angel (Rv 12:7ff) bent on
seducing us, destroying us, and leading us to hell. Although
we humans are very weak and stupid compared to Satan,
we have authority over him by the power of Jesus
(see Mt 10:1). In fact, Jesus has already irreversibly
defeated Satan. "The strife is o'er, the battle done." All
that remains is to place Jesus' enemies beneath His feet
(Heb 10:13).

How could we ever lose a war we've already won? The devil's
only hope is to confuse us so much that we don't know that
he exists, that a war is going on, that he is the enemy, and
that Jesus has already won. It seems

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MISSION AND EVANGELIZATION

"CONSTANT AID"

Let us set sail in the vast sea of the world and, following
Jesus' invitation, let us cast our nets without fear,
confident in His constant aid.

"ABSOLUTE PRIORITY"

The missionary mandate continues to be an absolute
priority for all baptized persons who are called to be
"servants and apostles of Christ Jesus" at the beginning
of this millennium.

"PRESSING AND URGENT"

St. Paul had understood well that only in Christ can
humanity find redemption and hope. Therefore, he
perceived that the mission was pressing and urgent to
"proclaim the promise of life in Christ Jesus" (2 Tm 1;1),
"our hope" (1 Tm 1:1), so that all peoples could be co-heirs
and co-partners in the promise through the Gospel (cf. Eph 3:6).

TAKING QUESTIONS?

"They failed, however, to understand this warning; its meaning was so
concealed from them they did not grasp it at all, and they were afraid to
question Him about the matter." —Luke 9:45

Jesus will give us the privilege of undergoing redemptive suffering in our
lives. Redemptive suffering is not just having pain, being sick, or having
problems, but suffering in the pattern of Jesus' death (Phil 3:10).
Redemptive suffering especially refers to persecution, sacrifice, and
rejection for the sake of the gospel. Redemptive suffering is our greatest
opportunity to build God's kingdom, lead people to Jesus, and express our
love for the Lord.

Jesus is talking to us about redemptive suffering because it is such a
gift and joy to suffer for Him (see 1 Pt 4:13) and because we need to be
prepared for this suffering. Without this preparation, we may reject it
and thereby miss out on one of the most important parts of our lives. Many
of us are so afraid of suffering we don't want it even mentioned. When
Jesus mentions it anyway, we are so afraid that we drop the subject and
don't "question Him about the matter" (Lk 9:45).

We should question Jesus: "Why am I so afraid to suffer for You?", "Which
sufferings are unnecessary and which sufferings are redemptive?", and "How
should I be preparing to suffer?"

Prayer: Father, may I find joy in the sufferings I endure for You and the
Church (Col 1:24).

Promise: "Remember your Creator in the days of your youth." —Eccl 12:1

Praise: St. Vincent sacrificially gave of himself in service to the Church
through sixty years in the priesthood.

"LIFT HIGH THE CROSS" - One Bread, One Body, 9/26/2008

The Word Gifts Ministry has discerned that a word given at the Bible
Institute is prophetic and for PM right now.

"I want a 6 week fast. I want each community to pray, to hear me clearly,
as I want to direct their lives."

Therefore, the Word Gifts Ministry and the Directors of PM are asking each
and every member of PM to fast in some way for 6 weeks, from Saturday,
September 27 to Friday, November 7. The intention is to hear the Lord
clearly.

Pray about joining us in this fast. If you receive any prophetic words
for PM at any time, please e-mail that word to

Ecclesiastes 3:1-11, Psalm 144, Luke 9:18-22

"LIFT HIGH THE CROSS"

The Son of Man "must first endure many sufferings, be rejected by the
elders, the high priests and the scribes, and be put to death, and then be
raised up on the third day." —Luke 9:22

Early in His public ministry, Jesus told His apostles to keep it a secret
that He was the Messiah (Lk 9:21). When He healed people and set them free
from the devil, He told these people to keep it secret. One explanation
for this may be that Jesus wanted to reveal His sufferings and death
before publicizing His Messianic power.

Because the crucified Jesus should be first and foremost in our hearts,
Paul determined that while he was with the Corinthians, he "would speak of
nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2). When he preached
to the Galatians, he displayed before their eyes Jesus Christ on the cross
(Gal 3:1). At Athens, when Paul neglected to begin with preaching Jesus
crucified, he suffered one of his worst failures (see Acts 17:32ff).

When the cross is not first, we make up our own warped version of
Christianity. We project our own preoccupations onto Christ and make Him
into our own image and likeness. Unless we focus on the cross, we will use
Christianity as a way of deifying and enthroning ourselves. Repent and
"lift high the cross."

Prayer: Father, may I boast of nothing but the cross of Jesus. Through it
may I be crucified to the world and the world to me (Gal 6:14).

Promise: "He has made everything appropriate to its time, and has put the
timeless into their hearts." —Eccl 3:11

Praise: Sts. Cosmas & Damian, both physicians, became targets for
persecution because they practiced medicine without charging any fees, in
order to serve the poor in their midst.

Build your life around eternal things that will last forever

Source: Tommy Tenny

I don't know whether I'm just becoming more sentimental the older I get or
if God is simply showing me how necessary it is to "number our days."
Everyone's life is a richly designed tapestry-a collection of moments and
memories that become fibres woven into the fabric of our very being. God has
been teaching me some things lately about making the most out of our lives
that I'd like to share with you today.
He has shown me how important it is to lay a solid foundation and how
essential it is to construct an enduring legacy if we are going to have an
influence that will make an eternal difference in the lives of those who are
following behind us.

I ask my wife Gene, when we come to the end of our race one of these days,
will we have imparted anything to our children that will withstand the test
of time? Are we leaving them with an endless list of rules and regulations
or are we instead fostering within them a life-changing love for God and
man? Will those around us whose lives we have touched remember our
passionate pursuit for God's presence or have we simply modelled "spectator
Christianity" to them? Just as Jesus spoke of Lazarus' sister Mary, that she
had "chosen the best portion," will that be what your loved ones think of
when they reflect upon your life?

This month marks Jeannie and my thirtieth wedding anniversary together. Our
children are growing up way too fast and sometimes I wonder whether or not I'm
doing all that I need to in my efforts to provide them with a godly heritage
that will not only sustain them during tough times, but that they can be
proud of for generations to come.

There is great truth in the old adage, "Actions speak louder than words."
Much of what our children and our friends learn from our lives is "caught"
rather than "taught." In other words, the life that you flesh out before
them will undoubtedly make a more memorable impression upon them than
anything you could ever possibly say to them.

In today's society, everyone is desperately searching for purpose and
fulfilment. Folks want to see people who are fuelled with enthusiasm about
things that really matter and who have strong convictions that give focus,
meaning, and direction to their lives.

We must exhibit two "passion points" to our children: in addition to
displaying our passion for God, we must also demonstrate to them our passion
for our spouse.

One time, early in our marriage, Jeannie and I really needed to get away and
spend some time together . . . alone. I told her, "Honey, we need to take a
few days off-just you and me." She reminded me that the kids were too small
and that we really could not afford to do anything like that at the time. I
knew she was right, particularly about our finances, but there was a much
more important consideration. I explained to her, "Sweetheart, if we don't
prioritise our relationship, then the whole framework for our children can
fall apart."

Children are the by-products of a loving relationship and, in saying that, I'm
not just referring to the results of procreation. I'm talking about the day
by day ongoing process of establishing secure and stable relationships that
will endure forever. As they witness firsthand what it truly means to love
someone, and as they see exactly what that looks like in real life, God uses
us to make an indelible impact on their impressionable lives.

I remember whenever I would get on an elevator and my girls were small, they
would inevitably ask, "Pick me up, daddy?" Have you ever actually realised
what the view- point of a little child is on an elevator? All they can see
are people's backsides and a "rear view" is not much of an outlook! What
they were saying to me was, "I don't like the way things look down here."
But, when we elevate them to shoulder level, then they can see life from a
"higher perspective" with a much better point of view.

This is the challenge that confronts each of us in our struggle to make a
lasting impression on the lives of the ones who are closest to us.
Sometimes, God puts people into our circle of influence that just need a
gentle upward lift so they can see farther ahead than they could on their
own. We must help elevate them to a loftier vantage point so they can
experience "God's-eye view" for their lives. Let's leave a permanent legacy
to those whom we love by pouring our lives into theirs while there is still
time.

"VAIN REPETITIONS"

"Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are
vanity!" —Ecclesiastes 1:2

Life without a total commitment to Christ is not just vanity, but all
vanity. Work, sex, speech, sight, and hearing are all vanity without Jesus
(Eccl 1:3-8). Because of this, you would think that people would be eager
to know and love Christ, since He is the only Meaning to life (see Jn
14:6). However, the reactions of worldly people to Christ are often like
Herod's reaction. They find Christ perplexing (Lk 9:7) and are "very
curious to see Him" (Lk 9:9).

They will never get beyond this perplexed curiosity until they do two
things: repent and believe. We can think and talk about Jesus forever —
all the way to hell — but the only way to know Him personally is to repent
of our sins (see Mk 1:15; Acts 2:38) and put our faith in Him rather than
in ourselves. Jesus will give us the grace to break out of the vicious,
vain, meaningless cycle of life, if we let it be done unto us according to
God's will (see Lk 1:38).

We only have one Way out of vanity, perplexity, and curiosity (see Jn
14:6). His name is Jesus. "There is no salvation in anyone else, for there
is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be
saved" (Acts 4:12).

Prayer: Father, thank You for loving us so much as to send Your Son that
whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life (Jn
3:16).

Promise: "Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of
heart." —Ps 90:12

Praise: Only after a new experience of Pentecost did Alex receive the Holy
Spirit and life to the full (Jn 10:10).

I SHALL NOT WANT" (Ps 23:1)

"Give me neither poverty nor riches; [provide me only with the food I
need;] lest, being full, I deny You, saying, 'Who is the Lord?' or, being
in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God." —Proverbs 30:8-9

Jesus sent His disciples out on mission as follows: "Take nothing for the
journey, neither walking staff nor traveling bag; no bread, no money" (Lk
9:3). The disciples would be provided for by their heavenly Father, Who
knew all they needed before they could ask (Mt 6:32) and Who provided
everything for them (Mt 6:30). Since God was their Provider, the disciples
were free to concentrate on proclaiming the good news of the Gospel.

Our central battle is one of faith. Will we or won't we believe that God
will provide for us? If we believe the Lord will personally provide for
us, we won't need to steal food and thereby provide for ourselves. Jesus
asked His disciples: " 'When I sent you on mission without purse or
traveling bag or sandals, were you in need of anything?' 'Not a thing,'
they replied" (Lk 22:35).

However, if we don't believe Jesus and His promise that the Father
provides our needs, we will steal or do whatever it takes to satisfy our
needs (Prv 30:9). One of Jesus' disciples, Judas, lost this battle of
faith. Judas did steal to provide for his wants (Jn 12:6). In so doing, he
profaned the name of his God (Prv 30:9) and eventually betrayed Jesus at
Gethsemani (Mt 26:49).

Daily, constantly, renew your faith in God as Provider and in Jesus as
Lord. "Trust in Him at all times" (Ps 62:9).

Prayer: Lord, "I do believe! Help my lack of trust!" (Mk 9:24)

Promise: "Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and
authority to overcome all demons." —Lk 9:1

Praise: God has provided for Elizabeth so many times for so many years
that she no longer doubts He always will.

POOR PRAYER

"He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor will himself also call and
not be heard." —Proverbs 21:13

The Bible often speaks as if any prayer we say will almost automatically
be answered. If we just ask, we receive (Mt 7:7). Whatever we ask in
Jesus' name is given to us (Jn 14:14). "Is it possible that He Who did not
spare His own Son but handed Him over for the sake of us all will not
grant us all things besides?" (Rm 8:32)

Why is it that many of us don't experience this awesome power of prayer?
We may even wonder if our prayers are doing any good. Part of the problem
is our refusal to hear the cry of the poor (Prv 21:13). If we are so
preoccupied with ourselves that we ignore the poor, the Lord would be
harming us by answering our prayers the way we want them answered. He
would be feeding into our selfishness. Therefore, the Lord answers our
prayers by changing the subject and calling us to repentance.

If you want God to answer you directly, listen to the poor.

Prayer: Father, may I get my attention off myself so You don't have to
change the subject.

Promise: "My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and
act upon it." —Lk 8:21

Praise: God gave St. Pio the gift of reading hearts, particularly when
hearing Confessions.

PM eNewsletter 25th Sunday in ordinary time

My brothers and sisters in Christ. I have a question for you.
Have you shared this eNewsletter with anyone lately?
Pray on it and pass the WORD.

God Bess you and all you care for.
The editor

Sept. 21st 25th Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, You always give us aids to help us to walk life in You.

This week, Lord, Your church raises up to us a man of great
determination and love.

St. Padre Pio, a man who not only received the stigmata,
but also had to live through a lot of rejection and emotional pain.

Yet, Lord, he never wavered in his commitment to You.

He was a man of great prayer, and a person who received
many of your sublime gifts, like healing and bio-location.

He could read hearts, and his masses where great renewals
of Calvary lived out in Padre Pio.

Jesus, his suffering, put with Yours, has given us all great
graces. Thank You, Jesus. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE EXHILARATION OF NOT GETTING OUR WAY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=9/21/2008

"As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are My
ways above your ways and My thoughts above your thoughts." —Isaiah 55:9

Because God's thoughts and ways are very different than
ours, we must think and act very differently from what we are
comfortable with, if we are to have the mind of Christ
(1 Cor 2:16). In other words, if it feels good, don't do it!

Until we are very holy, doing things God's way will be
heart-wrenching. It will upset us to not get our way. However,
we give in and do it God's way anyway because we love Him.
Sometimes we don't even understand what God is doing, but
there's something mysteriously beautiful about living in this
kingdom of God and living so foreign to our natural ways.
There is such authentic fulfillment in losing our lives (Lk 9:24),
abandoning ourselves to the Lord, not relying on our own
understanding (Prv 3:5), and not doing our own thing. What
freedom we have in not being confined to our own thoughts
and ways, but living a new life of faith in the Lord! (see Gal 2:20)

"For who can see Him and describe Him? Or who can
praise Him as He is? Beyond these, many things lie hid;
only a few of His works have we seen" (Sir 43:33-34). "How
deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of
God! How inscrutable His judgments, how unsearchable His
ways!" (Rm 11:33) "To Him be glory forever. Amen" (Rm 11:36).

Monday A LAMP TO THEIR FEET
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=9/22/2008

"No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel basket or
under a bed; he puts it on a lampstand so that whoever
comes in can see it." —Luke 8:16

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MISSION AND EVANGELIZATION

RESPONSE TO LOVE
By looking at St. Paul's experience, we understand that
missionary activity is a response to the love with which
God loves us. His love redeems us and prods us to the
missio ad gentes.

LOVE FROM THE HEART OF JESUS
..It is God ... Who leads the Church towards the frontiers
of humanity and calls the evangelizers to drink "from the
original source, which is Jesus Christ, from Whose pierced
hear flows the love of God" (Deus Caritas Est, n. 7).

"WAITING FOR THE GOSPEL"
Today there are countless people who are waiting for the
Gospel, those who are thirsting for hope and love.

A LAMP TO THEIR FEET

"No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel basket or under a bed; he
puts it on a lampstand so that whoever comes in can see it." —Luke 8:16

I'm sitting before the Blessed Sacrament reposed in the tabernacle. This
church is not my parish. I didn't know where the tabernacle was located.
So I looked for the burning light inside the sanctuary lamp. Once my eyes
located the lamp, I knew where Jesus was. We are called to be like
sanctuary lamps. When people see us, they can find Jesus. Like St. John
the Baptizer, we can be "the lamp, set aflame and burning bright" (Jn
5:35).

The sanctuary light in this church is not bright at all. It's a rather dim
light, in fact. However, the church sanctuary is in semi-darkness, and the
light, though dim, is easily spotted by someone looking for it. Therefore,
we must not be discouraged if we feel we are not exactly shining stars
compared to other believers. Some Christians shine more brightly than
others (see 1 Cor 15:41). "What of it? All that matters is that" our
shining lives reflect the glory of God as best as we can (Phil 1:18).

People line a street or driveway with candle luminaries to point the way
to a party. We must do the same for Jesus. We, His followers, "possess the
light of life" (Jn 8:12). Nations can find Jesus by the light of Jesus
shining through us (Is 60:1). "Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead, and
Christ will give you light" (Eph 5:14). Then let your light shine publicly
for the glory of God.

Prayer: Father, may Your light shine in me to the world so that people may
see goodness in my acts and praise You (Mt 5:16).

Promise: "To the Lord the perverse man is an abomination, but with the
upright is His friendship." —Prv 3:32

Praise: When the snowstorm hit, Carol was a witness to all who saw her
walking to Church as usual, despite inclement weather.

THE EXHILARATION OF NOT GETTING OUR WAY - One Bread, One Body, 9/21/2008

THE EXHILARATION OF NOT GETTING OUR WAY

"As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are My ways above
your ways and My thoughts above your thoughts." —Isaiah 55:9

Because God's thoughts and ways are very different than ours, we must
think and act very differently from what we are comfortable with, if we
are to have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16). In other words, if it feels
good, don't do it!

Until we are very holy, doing things God's way will be heart-wrenching. It
will upset us to not get our way. However, we give in and do it God's way
anyway because we love Him. Sometimes we don't even understand what God is
doing, but there's something mysteriously beautiful about living in this
kingdom of God and living so foreign to our natural ways. There is such
authentic fulfillment in losing our lives (Lk 9:24), abandoning ourselves
to the Lord, not relying on our own understanding (Prv 3:5), and not doing
our own thing. What freedom we have in not being confined to our own
thoughts and ways, but living a new life of faith in the Lord! (see Gal
2:20)

"For who can see Him and describe Him? Or who can praise Him as He is?
Beyond these, many things lie hid; only a few of His works have we seen"
(Sir 43:33-34). "How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge
of God! How inscrutable His judgments, how unsearchable His ways!" (Rm
11:33) "To Him be glory forever. Amen" (Rm 11:36).

Prayer: Father, by Your grace may I break out of self-centeredness into
the light of Your kingdom.

Promise: "Christ will be exalted through me, whether I live or die. For,
to me, 'life' means Christ; hence dying is so much gain." —Phil 1:20-21

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who prayed "Not My will, but Thine be
done." Alleluia!

THE MIRACLE OF A HUNDREDFOLD

"But some fell on good soil, grew up, and yielded grain a
hundredfold." —Luke 8:8

The Lord promises we can receive His word to bear fruit a hundredfold.
This is like saying $1,000 will turn into $100,000, which is an
astronomical increase. Most Christians believe God's word will help,
bless, teach, and even heal them, but few expect the hundredfold harvest.

If we took seriously the Lord's promise of a hundredfold, we would:
* tremble in prayer as we open the Bible,
* kiss the Bible before opening it,
* insist our pastors preach much longer,
* never miss our daily Bible reading,
* go to Mass more often than Sunday,
* daily read the Bible with our children and spouse, and
* encourage our children to seriously consider a lifetime ministry of
preaching or teaching God's word.

When we expect the hundredfold harvest of the word, our entire lives are
transformed. We receive the word not as the word of man but of God (1 Thes
2:13), "humbly welcome" it (Jas 1:21), and "act on this word" (Jas 1:22).

Prayer: Lord, may Your word burn in my heart (Lk 24:32).

Promise: "Just as we resemble the man from earth, so shall we bear the
likeness of the Man from heaven." —1 Cor 15:49

Praise: The Korean Martyrs, some only catechumens, give witness throughout
the ages to the "immeasurable scope of [God's] power in us who believe"
(Eph 1:19).

(Bear fruit a hundredfold by having a ministry of the Word. For
encouragement, order our tapes on the "Bible Teachers Series". Our
six-tape audio series starts with AV 117-1. Our three-part video series

RISEN LIFE

"Christ is now raised from the dead." —1 Corinthians 15:20

Christians are a resurrection-people. "If Christ has not been raised, our
preaching is void of content and your faith is empty too. Indeed, we
should then be exposed as false witnesses of God" (1 Cor 15:14-15). "If
Christ was not raised, your faith is worthless. You are still in your
sins, and those who have fallen asleep in Christ are the deadest of the
dead. If our hopes in Christ are limited to this life only, we are the
most pitiable of men" (1 Cor 15:17-19). In summary, without Jesus'
resurrection, our faith is meaningless, empty, false, and worthless.

Without the resurrection, we are trapped in sin, doomed in death, and "the
most pitiable of men" and women. Because Jesus is risen, our faith is the
ultimate, full, true, and precious meaning of life. Because of the
resurrection, Jesus has conquered sin, death, Satan, hell, and damnation.
We are therefore the most blessed of men and women.

Because Jesus' resurrection makes all the difference in this world and in
the next, we celebrate His resurrection not annually but each Sunday. We
focus the whole day on the risen Christ. We assemble and pray with other
risen people. We celebrate with the assembly and with our families. Each
week we take off work for this day. We draw our "life from the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Pt 1:3).

Prayer: Father, may I obey the Third Commandment.

Promise: "The Twelve accompanied Him, and also some women who had been
cured of evil spirits and maladies." —Lk 8:1-2

Praise: None of the wild animals placed in the amphitheater with St.
Januarius and his companions to devour them would come near them (see Dn
6:23).

New Chapters

Source: Greg Laurie
When I completed 'Lost Boy', the book and the documentary, I was able to
look back on my life with 20/20 hindsight and get a sense of the big
picture. I could see that, despite my difficult childhood, God had used it
to help me do what I do today.

In fact, the film ended with my family walking down the street smiling. My
wife Cathe, my son Jonathan, my daughter-in-law Brittany, my granddaughter
Stella, and, of course, Christopher. It was almost as if to say, "They all
lived happily ever after."

Then Christopher unexpectedly died and everything changed. It was as though
the back cover of my book had been ripped off and new chapters were to be
added.

The ink is still wet on these new chapters in my life, and I am not sure how
how this story will unfold.

But I know this, God is good and He is still in control!

As I look back on my life, I can see how good the Lord has been to me and my
family. And my prayer is that He will be glorified through all that has
happened.

I would like to say this has all gotten easier, but it has not. In some
ways, it is even harder. The hard reality of not seeing my son again on this
earth is sinking in.

Yes, I know I will see him again in heaven, but I just so wish he could be
with us now. Fortunately, that day of reunion will come for me and all of us
who have loved ones who have gone to heaven before us.

When I spoke at the Southern California Harvest just a few weeks ago, I wove
in the story of my son and how this has affected us. But I also told people
that no matter how difficult your trials, God will be walking with you
through it.

Take the worst-case scenario in life-finding out you are going to die, or
having someone close to you die, or having your child die before you. Now
know this-Jesus will be there for you, tears in His eyes, walking with you.

You know certain things are true, but you wonder if you can still stand in
this hour. You can and you will, if you have Christ!

One man whose son had died wrote this about his faith: "Faith is a
footbridge that you don't know will hold you over the chasm until you're
forced to walk out unto it."

I am on that footbridge right now, and I can tell you, it's sound.

Yes, new chapters are being written in my story, and in yours too. May God
help us all seek to glorify Him as He writes them.

God bless you,

Greg Laurie

NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT

"You are being saved by it at this very moment if you hold fast to it as I
preached it to you." —1 Corinthians 15:2

We pray God will do something for us, or thank Him for what He has done.
We live in the past and in the future. However, the Lord wants us to be
aware of Him at this very moment. "Now is the day of salvation!" (2 Cor
6:2) Now is the time to abandon our lives "to Him Whose power now at work
in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Eph 3:20).

When we pray for healing, do we expect an immediate response from God?
Almost all Jesus' healings in the Bible happened immediately. Has God
changed His timing? Or are we not believing and so not receiving? The Lord
promises: "Before they call, I will answer; while they are yet speaking, I
will hearken to them" (Is 65:24). We think God is slow and we talk about
waiting on the Lord, but He's waiting on us. Jesus said to the two
disciples: "How slow you are to believe!" (Lk 24:25) "Will [God] delay
long over them, do you suppose? I tell you, He will give them swift
justice. But when the Son of Man comes, will He find any faith on the
earth?" (Lk 18:7-8)

The place is here, the person is you, and the time is now. Jesus said:
"Your faith has been your salvation. Now go in peace" (Lk 7:50).

Prayer: Jesus, may I be living in and loving You now.

Promise: "You gave Me no kiss, but she has not ceased kissing My feet
since I entered." —Lk 7:45

Praise: In support of a family member who was a recovering alcoholic, the
Burtons never served alcohol at any family parties.

CHILD'S PLAY

"They are like children." —Luke 7:32

In the New Testament, children represent three different spiritual states.
The most popular Biblical picture of children is one that stresses their
utter dependence on their parents. If we become lowly like children and
acknowledge our total dependence on the Lord, we will enter God's kingdom
(Mt 18:3).

The Bible also sees children as a symbol of spiritual immaturity.
"Everyone whose food is milk alone is ignorant of the word that
sanctifies, for he is a child" (Heb 5:13). Paul said: "When I was a child
I used to talk like a child, think like a child, reason like a child. When
I became a man I put childish ways aside" (1 Cor 13:11). Because of their
immaturity, children are easily deceived, so Paul told the Ephesians: "Be
children no longer, tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of
doctrine that originates in human trickery and skill in proposing error"
(Eph 4:14).

Finally, the Bible uses children to represent sins of selfishness and
rebellion. Jesus compared the people of His day to self-centered, spoiled,
and stubborn children (Lk 7:32-34). Jesus wants us to become childlike in
one sense of the word, but not childish. He wants us to have the spiritual
maturity and unselfishness to be aware of our total dependence on Him.
Let's become children in the right way and repent of being childish in
other ways (see 1 Cor 14:20).

Prayer: Father, may we "be like children as far as evil is concerned, but
in mind be mature" (1 Cor 14:20).

Promise: "Love does not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoices with the
truth." —1 Cor 13:6

Praise: St. Robert, the spiritual father of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, used his
giftedness to defend and teach the Catholic faith.

GLAD TIDINGS

"Serve the Lord with gladness." —Psalm 100:2

Serving the Lord with gladness, according to the dictionary, means to
serve Him while showing joy, being brightly cheerful, and having an inner
feeling of contentment and gratification. Because the Lord of the
universe allows us to actually have a part in building His kingdom, we
"raise a glad cry" (Is 44:23). We gratefully tell the Lord: "I will be
glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, Most High" (Ps
9:3).

This gladness transcends our circumstances. From his prison, St. Paul
tells his coworkers: "Even if my life is to be poured out as a libation
over the sacrificial service of your faith, I am glad of it and rejoice
with all of you. May you be glad on the same score, and rejoice with me!"
(Phil 2:17-18)

When we serve the Lord with gladness, others catch on. God especially
wants all people to "be glad in the Lord and rejoice" (Ps 32:11; see also
Ps 67:5). God promises: "The lowly will hear Me and be glad" (Ps 34:3).
Many will tell the Lord: " 'You changed my mourning into dancing; You took
off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness' (Ps 30:12). 'You are my
Shelter; from distress You will preserve me; with glad cries of freedom
You will ring me round' (Ps 32:7). 'When cares abound within me, Your
comfort gladdens my soul' (Ps 94:19). 'Therefore my heart is glad and my
soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence' (Ps 16:9)."

"Hear the sounds of joy and gladness" (Ps 51:10). "Meet with joy and
gladness" (Is 35:10). "Serve the Lord with gladness."

Prayer: Father, I love living for Jesus. "I will rejoice for He has made
me glad" (see Ps 92:5).

Promise: "You, then, are the body of Christ. Every one of you is a member
of it." —1 Cor 12:27

Praise: During St. Cyprian's years as bishop, he faithfully persevered
while suffering a persecution, two schisms, and a plague. (This teaching
