THE VOICE OF REASON

"But his servants came up and reasoned with him." -2 Kings 5:13

Naaman was blessed with humble servants who pleaded with him and reasoned with him. Where was the voice of reason who would calm the angry crowd in the Nazareth synagogue? It may have only taken one voice of reason to still the Nazareth crowd and prevent Jesus' very own townspeople from carrying out their murderous intentions.

The disciples and Peter corrected the powerful Sanhedrin. "When the Sanhedrin heard this, they were stung to fury and wanted to kill them" (Acts 5:33). Nevertheless, Gamaliel, the one voice of reason, stood up, spoke out, and was heeded (Acts 5:34ff). Did anyone do this at Nazareth? Scripture does not indicate this. Once a crowd in Ephesus wanted to kill the apostle Paul after he preached to them. But the town clerk of Ephesus spoke rationally to them, and dissuaded them from their murderous intent (Acts 19:35).

An angry crowd planned to kill the innocent Susanna because of the false testimony of two elders (Dn 13:28ff). One solitary voice of reason belonging to the youthful Daniel calmed the crowd and freed Susanna from death (Dn 13:45ff).

In each of the above cases, the voice of reason belonged to a member of the crowd itself. There are many hard-hearted people and crowds who need to be checked by a voice of reason. Of course, many are like Pharoah, so hardened of heart that even a humble voice of reason will not persuade them. Whatever the consequences, "stand up and tell them all that" God commands (Jer 1:17).

Prayer: Father, give me "that Spirit of faith of which the Scripture says: 'Because I believed, I spoke out' " (2 Cor 4:13).

Promise: "His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean." -2 Kgs 5:14

Praise: Praying constantly for wisdom, Officer Ruth talked a disturbed person out of a suicide attempt.

Let us pray and grow.

Let us feel Your peace and accept You truly as our Lord and God.

Thank You Jesus, for the Eucharist.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday DYING FOR SOME FRUIT
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/28/2016

"A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he came out looking for
fruit on it." -Luke 13:6

If we don't bear fruit, we will be cut down (Lk 13:9) and thrown into the
fire to be burnt (Jn 15:6). If we don't bear fruit by leading others to
Christ, we will not live with Christ in eternity.

We can be sure of bearing fruit by living in Jesus the Vine (Jn 15:5), and
dying to self. "Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it
remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit"
(Jn 12:24). Dying and living go together. We must die to self in order to
live in Christ and bear fruit.

Bearing the fruit of evangelization is not primarily a matter of instruction
or persuasion but of dying and living. This means everyone can and must bear
fruit.

Today, in Catholic Churches throughout the world, catechumens are receiving
the prayers called the First Scrutiny. They are dying to self, as did the
Samaritan woman when Jesus scrutinized her heart (Jn 4:4ff). Let us join the
catechumens in death so we can join them in new life. Through our Lenten
mortification - almsgiving, prayer, and fasting (see Mt 6:1ff) - let us die
to self and prepare for risen life and the amazing fruitfulness of Pentecost.

Prayer: Father, may I bear abundant, quality fruit in the next two months.

Promise: "For all these reasons, let anyone who thinks he is standing upright
watch out lest he fall!" -1 Cor 10:12

Praise: Praise You, Lord Jesus, "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life"
(Jn 14:6). All glory and honor belong to You.

GOD'S HEART FOR THE LOST - One Bread, One Body, 2/27/2016

GOD'S HEART FOR THE LOST

"We had to celebrate and rejoice! This brother of yours was dead, and has come back to life. He was lost, and is found." -Luke 15:32

There is "more joy in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need to repent" (Lk 15:7). We rejoice over a sinner's repentance because this is so important to Jesus and, therefore, to us.

"You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" (1 Tm 1:15). Jesus so wants sinners to return to Him that He died on the cross to make this possible. Jesus will leave ninety-nine sheep in the desert and go in search of the one lost sheep (Lk 15:4). Jesus has done and will do almost anything to lead sinners to repentance.

As Jesus' followers, we Christians should be preoccupied with leading sinners to repent. The Lord even gives us extra incentive to do this by promising: "Remember this: the person who brings a sinner back from his way will save his soul from death and cancel a multitude of sins" (Jas 5:20).

To lead someone to repentance we must:
* repent ourselves. "Remove the plank from your own eye first; then you will see clearly to take the speck from your brother's eye" (Mt 7:5).
* intercede. Some demons do "not leave but by prayer and fasting" (Mt 17:21 NAB).
* "profess the truth in love" (Eph 4:15). Love people enough to tell them they and you need to repent.

Lead someone back to Jesus and make heaven rejoice.

Prayer: Father, this Lent, may I lead some of Your children back to You.

Promise: He "will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt." -Mi 7:19

Praise: Anthony invited a co-worker to Confession.

ADVANCED STAGES OF EVIL - One Bread, One Body, 2/26/2016

Friday, February 26, 2016

ADVANCED STAGES OF EVIL

"They seized him, dragged him outside the vineyard, and killed him."-Matthew 21:39

In both Scripture readings today, we see advanced stages of evil. Jacob's years of deception came back to haunt him when he was deceived by his sons, who almost murdered their brother Joseph and eventually sold him into slavery (Gn 37:28). In today's Gospel reading, Jesus describes centuries of rebellion against God's will. This rebellion culminated in murdering Jesus, the Messiah and Son of God.

We see many strongholds of the evil one in our midst (see 2 Cor 10:4). We see advanced stages of evil which have grown worse over the centuries. Many Christians doubt if these strongholds can be toppled, but the Lord promises us that His grace far surpasses even the most advanced stages of evil (Rm 5:20). There is One greater in us "than there is in the world" (1 Jn 4:4). Although we acknowledge the formidable power of the evil one in perverting society, God's power of converting the world is much greater. For example, over the last few decades, we have caught a glimpse of God's power over evil in the fall of Communism.

To overcome generational, diabolical strongholds of evil in their advanced stages, we need only obey God (see 2 Cor 10:6; Rm 16:19-20). If we go when the Lord says "Go," pray when He commands to pray, speak when He calls us to be His witnesses, fast when He says "Fast," stop when He says "Stop," we will see freed and converted families, renewed churches, obedient and Christ_centered nations, and repentant institutions and businesses. Believe and obey.

Prayer: Father, do through me more than I could ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20).

Promise: "The Stone which the builders rejected has become the Keystone of the structure." -Mt 21:42

Praise: Barbara prays daily for the conversion of China.

FASTING AND LISTENING - One Bread, One Body, 2/25/2016

FASTING AND LISTENING

"…they will not be convinced…" -Luke 16:31

During the 19th century, the rich in England were said to have not wanted to be Catholic because then they would have to "worship with the help," that is, the servants, since the Catholic faith was open to all, both rich and poor. On this topic, St. Paul corrected the Corinthians, for in their very early Christian "meetings," the rich ate plentifully while the poor went hungry (see 1 Cor 11:17ff). The early Church focused on being "mindful of the poor" (Gal 2:10). When the widows complained, the apostles prayed over and imposed hands on seven men chosen to oversee the just, daily distribution of food (see Acts 6:1-6).

As we read last Sunday, Jesus conversed with Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration, and it was a conversation in which all three members had done a forty-day fast (Mt 4:2; Ex 34:28; 1 Kgs 19:8). If the living brothers of the rich man would not listen to Moses and the prophets (represented by Elijah), who had fasted for forty days, then they wouldn't listen to a person who rose from the dead, that is, Jesus, who had fasted for forty days (see Lk 16:31). One of the effects of fasting is to bring solidarity with the poor, who also often miss meals for financial reasons. Another effect of fasting is to become one with the Lord. One who fasts empties himself or herself of the things of the world, such as food, to be filled with God.

People who wish to be separated from the poor are in great danger of wishing to be separated from the Lord. There is such a place reserved for people who refuse to listen to the Lord. It's called hell. Therefore, start fasting, so as to hear the Lord and serve the poor.

Prayer: "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord" (Jer 17:7).

Promise: "The Lord watches over the way of the just."-Ps 1:6

Praise: Peter volunteers at a supper-time soup kitchen to serve Jesus in the poor (see Mt 25:40).

DROP THE SUBJECT - One Bread, One Body, 2/24/2016

DROP THE SUBJECT

"In reply Jesus said, 'You do not know what you are asking.' " -Matthew 20:22

As we enter into Lent, Jesus is trying to take us with Him to the cross. He speaks of being betrayed, condemned, scourged, crucified, and risen (Mt 20:18-19). However, like James and John, many of us aren't that interested in the cross. In fact, we're not that interested in Lent, fasting, penance, repentance, or Confession. We have more important things on our minds; that is, ourselves.

We're more concerned about what we want (see Mt 20:21) than about what the Lord wants. We'd like to be promoted, to sit at Jesus' right or left hand (Mt 20:21). We'd like to go to Jesus' throne and bypass the cross.

Yet Jesus doesn't cooperate with us. He insists we get our minds off of ourselves and back on the cross. He speaks of the cup of suffering (Mt 20:22) and of laying down our lives in service to each other (Mt 20:28). He determines to speak of nothing but of Himself crucified (see 1 Cor 2:2).

If we're going to communicate with Jesus, if we're going to pray, we'll have to stop focusing on ourselves and let Jesus be Lord of our conversation. Jesus refuses to drop the subject of the cross. So we must drop the subject of ourselves, if we expect to communicate with Him. Drop your subject.

Prayer: Father, may I boast of nothing but the cross (Gal 6:14).

Promise: "Into Your hands I commend my spirit; You will redeem me, O Lord, O faithful God." -Ps 31:6

Praise: Rather than growing bitter over the loss of her husband and children, Theresa began volunteering for her Church family.

"BE RECONCILED TO GOD!" (2 Cor 5:20)

"Come now, let us set things right, says the Lord: though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow." -Isaiah 1:18

The Pharisees and Sadducees had hearts for their own honor. Before Jesus chastised them for their pride, He wept over them, lamenting that in their desire for honors, they had completely missed "the path to peace" (Lk 19:42). Moreover, their pride caused them to be badly misled and fail to understand the power of God (Mk 12:24). God's plan is to touch the hearts of sinful men and women with self-sacrificing, humble love.

Lent is the season to humble our pride and bow before the Lord. One of the best ways to do this is to make a sincere, truthful Lenten Confession. In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati on this night for the last several years, every Church opened its doors for Confession from 7-9PM. Surely many returned to the Lord (Jl 2:13) in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Lord Jesus opens His arms wide to embrace His people. Our sins cannot keep His love away; it's only our stiff-necked pride that keeps Him at arms-length.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord (1 Pt 5:6). Confess your sins to Him (Ps 32:5). Receive His forgiveness, love, and peace. "Make things right" and be washed clean.

Prayer: Father, may I make any changes necessary to be reconciled to You before this day is over.

Promise: "Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim."-Is 1:16-17

Praise: St. Polycarp was condemned to die by burning at the stake as a martyr. God protected him from the burning flames (see Is 43:2), so his executioners were forced to stab him to death.

JESUS' GIFT OF THE PAPACY

"I for My part declare to you, you are 'Rock,' and on this rock I will build My church." -Matthew 16:18

Jesus made Peter the head of the apostles. Did Jesus intend for someone to succeed Peter as the head of the apostles? The early Church believed Jesus wanted Peter to have successors, and they were in a better position to know Jesus' will than we are. Moreover, there is no Biblical data to deny the continuation of Peter's ministry as the head of the apostles.

Why did Jesus tell the Church to choose successors to Peter? Although the Church is founded on the apostles and their successors, the bishops (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14), the bishops have not always been united in teaching the faith. For example, the majority of the bishops denied the divinity of Jesus during the time of the Arian heresy. During the English "Reformation," every English bishop except St. John Fisher gave allegiance to the heresy that King Henry VIII was the head of the Church. Without a pope, we don't always know what the Church teaches. Without a pope, the Church sometimes would not be what it is supposed to be, "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15).

How is the Pope called to lead the bishops and the Church? He is to exercise authority, for Jesus has given him the keys of God's kingdom (Mt 16:19). He is to give the Church "a shepherd's care" (1 Pt 5:2), "not lording it over" the Church (1 Pt 5:3).

Love and obey the Pope. Pray for him daily. Thank Jesus for giving him to us.

Prayer: Jesus, may I love the Church and the Pope as You do.

Promise: "When the chief Shepherd appears you will win for yourselves the unfading crown of glory." -1 Pt 5:4

Praise: "The people carried the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mattresses, so that when Peter passed by at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them...all of whom were cured" (Acts 5:15-16).

PM eNewsletter Second Sunday of Lent

February 21st, Second Sunday of Lent.

Jesus, call each and everyone of us, to come and see You in the Eucharist,
and receive You into our hearts.

Give us the grace to go to mass, if possible, everyday during this Lenten
season.

Let us see You in the breaking of the bread, and truly desire to sit with
You in adoration.

Let us sit with You and reflect on our lives, and all the choices we have
made, and let us know which ones we should work on changing or renewing in
You.

Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your true presence in the tabernacle and
on the altar.

Your love for us knows no bounds, and You just keep giving us Yourself, so
we can have the grace and courage to walk the real walk of Christianity
every day.

Let us become living tabernacles of Your presence, and let others see the
Christ in us.

Let us be ambassadors for You, through all of our thoughts, words, and
actions.

Let us be a sign post of the road, we, and others should walk on, to come
truly into You.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday AN IN-TENTS EXPERIENCE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/21/2016

"I am talking about those who are set upon the things of this world."
-Philippians 3:19

During their forty years in the desert, God accompanied the Israelites,
dwelling in a tent called the Meeting Tent (see Ex 40:2). When it was time
to journey on, the Lord rose in a cloud which hovered over the Meeting Tent.
When the cloud moved, the people packed up the Meeting Tent and followed
the cloud. When the cloud stopped, the people pitched the Meeting Tent, and
God descended from the cloud to dwell in the Tent in the midst of the
people (Ex 40:34-38).

God's sacred presence on Mount Horeb (Sinai) prefigures His presence on
Transfiguration Mountain (Ex 24:15; Lk 9:29, 35); so also does the cloud in
the Meeting Tent prefigure the sacred presence of God at the Transfiguration
(Ex 40:34ff; Lk 9:34). The Old Covenant, represented by Moses and Elijah
(the law and the prophets), joins the New Covenant, that is, Jesus and the
apostles. Though Peter wants to erect three tents, he did not need a tent to
enter the Presence of God; he was already standing in the Presence of God
inside the new transfigured Meeting Tent and cloud. Standing with their feet
on the earth and their heads in God's Presence, the apostles' minds were no
longer set upon the things of the world (see Phil 3:19).

At each Mass we attend, we are like the apostles on Transfiguration Mountain.
Our feet stand on earth, but the Lord comes down from heaven in the Eucharist.
At Mass, we are partly in heaven and partly on earth. Attend Mass daily, or as
often as possible, and "be intent on things above rather than on things of
earth" (Col 3:2).

Prayer: Father, in this time of Lent, help me to focus on heavenly things
rather than on things of earth (Col 3:1ff; Jn 3:1ff; Phil 3:19).

Promise: "We have our citizenship in heaven." -Phil 3:20

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

YOUTH AND MERCY

"A GREAT PARTY"

The Jubilee ... is a time when we can discover that life together as brothers
and sisters is like a great party, perhaps the most beautiful party we can
imagine, the endless party that Jesus has taught us to celebrate by His Spirit.
The Jubilee is the party to which Jesus invites us all, without excluding anyone.

GROW IN LOVE

To be merciful means to grow in a love which is courageous, generous and real. It
means to grow physically and spiritually. You are preparing to be Christians
capable of making courageous choices and decisions, in order to build daily, even
through little things, a world of peace.

"AMAZING CHANGES"

Yours is a time of life which is full of amazing changes. Everything seems
possible and impossible all at once. I repeat what I said to some of your friends:
"Remain steadfast in the journey of faith, with firm hope in the Lord ..."
(homily, 2013)

AN IN-TENTS EXPERIENCE

"I am talking about those who are set upon the things of this world." -Philippians 3:19

During their forty years in the desert, God accompanied the Israelites, dwelling in a tent called the Meeting Tent (see Ex 40:2). When it was time to journey on, the Lord rose in a cloud which hovered over the Meeting Tent. When the cloud moved, the people packed up the Meeting Tent and followed the cloud. God's sacred presence on Mount Horeb (Sinai) prefigures His presence on Transfiguration Mountain (Ex 24:15; Lk 9:29, 35); so also does the cloud in the Meeting Tent prefigure the sacred presence of God at the Transfiguration (Ex 40:34ff; Lk 9:34). "I FIRMLY RESOLVE"

"Oh, that I might be firm in the ways of keeping Your statutes!" -Psalm 119:5

Is your Ash Wednesday Lenten resolve still firm or are temptations wearing down your self-denial? Our weak flesh is vulnerable to the relentless pressures of temptation. We desire to do what is right, but we don't have the power (see Rm 7:18). Our old, sinful nature rebels against our new, redeemed nature. There's a civil war raging inside us (see Jas 4:1). What wretches we are! (Rm 7:24) "Who can free" us? (Rm 7:24)

Jesus has set us free (Jn 8:36). He freed us for lifelong liberty (Gal 5:1). He shattered the bonds of sin that held us bound and gave us new life and risen power (Col 2:13-14). Praise Jesus!

Yet we still live in human bodies and are weak flesh. We live a risen life (Col 3:1), yet are subject to temptation, just as Jesus was (Mt 4:1ff; Heb 4:15). With the psalmist, we pray to be firm in resisting temptation (Ps 119:5). We must ask Jesus to "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5), for unless our faith is firm, we will not be firm (Is 7:9).

Jesus "is able to help those who are tempted" (Heb 2:18). Ask Him to immerse you in the Holy Spirit (Jn 7:37-39), Who fights against the temptations of the flesh (Gal 5:17). "My point is that you should live in accord with the Spirit and you will not yield to the cravings of the flesh" (Gal 5:16). "So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!" (Gal 5:1)

Prayer: Father, "I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more, and avoid the near occasion of sin."

Promise: "You will be a people sacred to the Lord, your God, as He promised." -Dt 26:19

Praise: By learning to practice regular and spontaneous prayer, Roger grew closer to Jesus each week.

LENT OR ELSE

"If the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all My statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die." -Ezekiel 18:21

Lent is a powerful call to repentance, and repentance is a matter of life or death. Therefore, Lent is a matter of life or death - everlasting life or the death of damnation.

This Lent, many people will turn away from all their sins (Ez 18:21). This will be the Lent of a lifetime leading to the total love and perfect happiness of heaven. This Lent, some people will turn from the path of virtue (Ez 18:24). This will be a tragic, fatal Lent leading to the second death (see Rv 2:11). This Lent, many people will persevere in holiness despite some of the worst temptations of their lives. Others will persevere in wickedness despite some of the greatest graces in their lives. Lent will be very, very good or very, very bad. It may be so good or bad that it will take years to recognize its full effects.

Therefore, "delay not your conversion to the Lord, put it not off from day to day" (Sir 5:8). "Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress" (Sir 18:21). "Work with anxious concern to achieve your salvation" (Phil 2:12). "We must consider how to rouse each other to love and good deeds" (Heb 10:24). "And this all the more because you see that the Day draws near" (Heb 10:25). "Now is the day of salvation!" (2 Cor 6:2) "This is the time of fulfillment. The reign of God is at hand! Reform your lives and believe in the gospel!" (Mk 1:15)

Prayer: Father, may my next Confession be life-changing and life-saving.

Promise: "If you bring your gift to the altar and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift at the altar, go first to be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift." -Mt 5:23-24

Praise: After suffering a heart attack, James listened closely for the voice of God and changed his lifestyle to a life in the Spirit.

GOD ALONE

"Help me, who am alone and have no help but You." -Esther C:14, 25

We have been taught to always have something to fall back on. We have insurance, savings, a nest egg, or an ace in the hole. We avoid ever getting in the position where we would have to depend on God for our next meal.

However, the Lord may be doing something almost the opposite of what we're trying to do. He is trying to strip us and leave us with nothing but Him to depend on. For example, when He sent out His apostles on mission, He commanded: "Provide yourselves with neither gold nor silver nor copper in your belts; no traveling bag, no change of shirt, no sandals, no walking staff" (Mt 10:9-10). Paul described one of his missions thus: "We were left to feel like men condemned to death so that we might trust, not in ourselves, but in God Who raises the dead" (2 Cor 1:9).

Lent is intended to be a desert experience (see Mt 4:1). The Lord wants to take food, comfort, and even some support from our lives. He wants us to know that the people and possessions He has put in our lives are not to be used as crutches; rather, they are to be accepted as gifts from Him. He wants us to know that He can love us without any intermediaries. He wants us to be alone with Him and have no help but Him. Let the Lord lead you into the desert of Lent (Hos 2:16; Jer 2:2).

Prayer: Lord, You only are "my Rock and my Salvation, my Stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all" (Ps 62:3).

Promise: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to anyone who asks Him!" -Mt 7:11

Praise: Refugees from war-torn Africa and Latin America worship together at a parish in Cincinnati. They all have become one in Jesus (1 Cor 12:12).

GREATER PROPHECY, REPENTANCE, AND FASTING - One Bread, One Body, 2/17/2016

GREATER PROPHECY, REPENTANCE, AND FASTING

"This is an evil age." -Luke 11:29

Jonah prophesied to the people of Nineveh. "When the people of Nineveh believed God, they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth" (Jon 3:5). All 120,000 citizens of a city steeped in sin, violence, and murder (see Na 3:1ff) repented in one day (Jon 4:11). They expressed their repentance by communal fasting.

Pope St. John Paul II prophesied to the people of the world, especially to Catholics in the Western world. He called our Western society a "culture of death." He called us to pray that America not lose its soul. The Popes in their directives regarding sex education have described our society as "sick."

As the people of Nineveh heard the great prophet Jonah (see Lk 11:32), the people of our time have been privileged to hear the great prophet Pope St. John Paul II, the Vicar of Christ and the successor of Peter, the head of the apostles. Will we repent? Will our Lenten communal fast express a greater repentance, or at least lead to it? In this Lent, we may be repenting and fasting for our lives, souls, sanity, and humanity. If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts (see Ps 95:7-8). "Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" (2 Cor 6:2)

Prayer: Father, may I fast in the power of the Spirit.

Promise: "Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold His blazing wrath, so that we shall not perish." -Jon 3:9

Praise: Formerly known as "The Praisers of Mary," the seven founders of the Servite order were guided to found their new order when Mary appeared to them.

MY DAD LOVES ME

"Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. This is how you are to pray: 'Our Father...' " -Matthew 6:8-9

The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert where the devil questioned whether He was God the Father's beloved Son (see Mt 3:17; 4:3, 6). Jesus overcame these temptations, and the Holy Spirit cried out in Jesus' heart: "Abba" (Father) (Gal 4:6; Rm 8:15).

This Lent, as we imitate Jesus' forty-day desert fast, we also wish to emerge from the Lenten desert confirmed by the Spirit in our Father's love for us. On Easter Vigil and on Easter Sunday, at every Mass in every Catholic Church in the world, the Church will ask us the question, "Do you believe in God the Father?" If we've had a good Lent, we will answer that question "I do." With unprecedented conviction, we will proclaim that we know that our Father loves us as His adopted sons and daughters.

In this first week of Lent, have you already begun to be confirmed in your Father's love for you? Is the prayer of your heart, "Our Father Who art in heaven"? (see Mt 6:9) Are your secret almsgiving, praying, and fasting resulting in God the Father making no secret of His love for you as His child? Lent is about knowing our Father's love. Let Abba love you.

Prayer: Abba, I trust You.

Promise: "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but shall do My will, achieving the end for which I sent it." -Is 55:11

Praise: When John forgave his abusive father and reconciled with him, he discovered a new depth in his relationship with God the Father as well.

FULL-SERVICE FASTING

"I assure you, as often as you did it for one of My least brothers, you did it for Me." -Matthew 25:40

We are entering into the forty-day Lenten fast. Our fast can affect our interior disposition, directing our heart, mind, body and lives toward God, correcting our appetites and conforming ourselves to God's will. Part of this renewal is alms-giving. The Lord might be asking us to give to the poor what money and time we save by fasting. For example, if we save three dollars by skipping lunch, we could use that money to help feed or clothe someone. If we save a half- hour by having only a snack for supper, we shouldn't merely watch more TV or do more work. Instead, we could give that time to strangers, the imprisoned, or sick persons.

If possible, we should fast for a specific intention. We may fast for John's conversion, for Mary to accept the call to become a nun, for peace in a particular country, for Harry to return to the Lord and the Church, etc.

In addition, fasting from food should be accompanied by feasting on God's Word. We shouldn't give in to the temptation of thinking too much about all the food we're not eating; rather, we should read and meditate on God's Word day and night (Ps 1:2).

Fasting is not only depriving ourselves of food. It is also recycling our money, time, and energy to serve others and build ourselves up in the Spirit. Fasting is fulfilling. Do a full-service fast.

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to fast as You did (see Mt 4:2).

Promise: "Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy." -Lv 19:2

Praise: Fasting has increased Louise's capacity to resist temptation and do good works.

PM eNewsletter First Sunday of Lent

February 14th, 2013 First Sunday of Lent

Heavenly Jesus, as we begin the disipline of Lent, open up our hearts, souls, and minds,
to really do this Lent, what would best draw us into a real relationship with You.

Jesus, help us to see that You love us with a love that can't really be understood.

Yet Lord, You want us to let go, and let You be the real Lord of our lives.

Let us also see that You are constantly willing to forgive us, and make us alive with
life.

Let us not understand, but rather just trust You, that You have a plan for our lives
that will work out as You want it to.

Jesus, help us to love all in our lives, and help us to be truly Christed to all
around us.

Let us be light to the world and let us draw others to You through our love and help
to others.

Let us do Lent in peace and joy of heart.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday NOT NEGOTIABLE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/14/2016

Jesus "was tempted by the devil." -Luke 4:2

Notice how Jesus dispatches the devil and his temptations:

Jesus never engages Satan in dialogue. He does not allow evil to converse
with Him. Three times, He simply speaks the truth and ends the conversation.

Jesus uses Scripture to defeat each temptation.

Jesus was "full of the Holy Spirit" (Lk 4:1). The Holy Spirit fights against
the evil spirit (Gal 5:17).

Jesus was engaged in prayer and fasting (Lk 4:2), which overcome the devil
(Mt 17:21, NAB).

Jesus understood that He was God's beloved Son (Lk 3:22). He knew His Father
would provide all His needs.

The devil "is a liar and is the father of lies" (Jn 8:44). When he tempts us,
he makes promises which he has no intention of keeping (see Lk 4:6). His
promises are lies. Giving into temptation will not make things easier or more
pleasurable for us, because Satan does not bring pleasure but rather
destruction and guilt. The tragic mistake of Adam and Eve was to engage the
devil in conversation. They listened to his deceptions, then considered them,
then tragically embraced them (Gn 3:1ff).

The only answer to the evil one and his temptations is that of Jesus: "Get
behind Me, Satan" (Mt 16:23, JB). We immediately rebuke temptation and listen
only to God. Therefore, abide in God's Word (Jn 8:31), treasure it (Lk 2:19),
and keep it in your heart to defeat temptation (Ps 119:11).

Prayer: Father, fill me with the Holy Spirit. May I hunger and thirst only for
You.

Promise: "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your
heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." -Rm 10:9

Praise: Praise You, risen Lord Jesus, for conquering sin, death, and the
kingdom of darkness.

teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

YOUTH AND MERCY

CELEBRATING THE HOLY YEAR

The Church is celebrating the Holy Year of Mercy, a time of grace, peace,
conversion and joy. It is meant for everyone: people of every age, from
far and near.

MERCY CAN'T BE STOPPED

There are no walls or distances which can prevent the Father's mercy from
reaching and embracing us. The Holy Door is now open in Rome and in all
the dioceses of the world.

THIS CONCERNS YOU

This grace-filled moment also concerns you, dear young people. I encourage
you to take an active part in this celebration and to realize that each of
you is a child of God.
