FAMOUS LAST WORDS

"Rely not on your strength in following the desires of your heart." -Sirach 5:2

How many times have we said: "No problem," "I have the power," "Everything's under control," "Who can prevail against me?" (see Sir 5:1, 3) Those are famous last words. We don't have it together, and we never will.

"You have no idea what kind of life will be yours tomorrow. You are a vapor that appears briefly and vanishes. Instead of saying, 'If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that,' all you can do is make arrogant and pretentious claims" (Jas 4:14-16).

Sometimes we also say: "I got away with it," "I have sinned, yet what has befallen me?", "Great is His mercy; my many sins He will forgive" (see Sir 5:4, 6). But let's not be presumptuous. "Make no mistake about it, no one makes a fool of God!" (Gal 6:7) Jesus is serious about sin; repentance is the only alternative to eternal punishment. Therefore, "delay not your conversion to the Lord, put it not off from day to day" (Sir 5:8).

Famous last words often result in tragedy. But we have some truly famous last words from Jesus. "Well done," good and faithful servant. "Come, share your Master's joy" (Mt 25:21). May these be God's last words to you.

Prayer: Father, may I not be presumptuous or unrealistic about life, love, sin, and damnation.

Promise: "Any man who gives you a drink of water because you belong to Christ will not, I assure you, go without his reward." -Mk 9:41

Praise: Six-year-old Brian gave up his bedtime drink as a fast for the healing of his baby brother's ears.

MINED-FIELDS - One Bread, One Body, 2/27/2019

Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Sirach 4:11-19, Psalm 119:165, 168, 171-172, 174-175, Mark 9:38-40

MINED-FIELDS

"John said to Him, 'Teacher, we saw a man using Your name to expel demons.' " -Mark 9:38

Because of past wars, large areas of several countries are still land-mined. These mines cause devastating injuries and death even years after a war is over.

Jesus' war on earth with the devil is over. "It was to destroy the devil's works that the Son of God revealed Himself" (1 Jn 3:8). Jesus is totally victorious. He "took His seat forever at the right hand of God; now He waits until His enemies are placed beneath His feet" (Heb 10:12-13). The war is over, but the spiritual land-mines of the evil one still remain and continue to harm those who are not walking with Jesus.

Therefore:

* Don't take a step without checking with Jesus (see Is 30:21).
* Warn others to watch their steps.
* Sweep the mined fields clean by prayer and fasting (see Mt 17:21, NAB).
* Lead others to walk with Christ - even in His footsteps (see 1 Pt 2:21).
* Encourage others to pray and fast.
* Thank Jesus for His victory and the guidance of the Holy Spirit (see Jn 16:13).
Prayer: Father, thank You for victory, protection, healing, and hope.

Promise: "Wisdom instructs her children and admonishes those who seek her. He who loves her loves life." -Sir 4:11-12

Praise: Charles noticed that the lifestyle he lived was literally killing his friends who lived that same lifestyle. Accepting the grace of conversion, he repented and turned permanently to Jesus.

"HOPE IN HIM" (SIR 2:6) - One Bread, One Body, 2/26/2019

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Sirach 2:1-11, Psalm 37:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40, Mark 9:30-37
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022619.cfm

"HOPE IN HIM" (SIR 2:6)

"Study the generations long past and understand; has anyone hoped in the Lord and been disappointed?" -Sirach 2:10

Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and then imprisoned, losing at least ten of the best years of his life (Gn 37:18ff). Yet he continued to hope, and God restored him far beyond what he could have imagined. Abraham, Joshua, Caleb, and Ruth also suffered for years in "the generations long past...[They] hoped in the Lord" and were not disappointed (Sir 2:10).

"Hope is the confident expectation of divine blessing" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2090). When divine blessing seems withheld for a long time, it could be a time of trial (Sir 2:1), adversity (Sir 2:2), or testing (Sir 2:5) meant to strengthen and purify us. If this trial is prolonged, we can become heartsick (Prv 13:12) and be tempted to lose hope. Since hope is also "the fear of offending God's love and of incurring punishment" (Catechism, 2090), as we lose hope, we become less afraid of God and more susceptible to sin. Then, as sin increases, hope decreases. Sin can drain our hope. Therefore, repent! "Make straight your ways and hope in Him" (Sir 2:6). "Happy the man whose conscience does not reproach him, who has not lost hope" (Sir 14:2).

Ask the Lord for a great increase in your hope. "None who hope in Him shall fail in strength" (1 Mc 2:61). God says: "Those who hope in Me shall never be disappointed" (Is 49:23).

"This hope will not leave us disappointed, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us" (Rm 5:5).

Prayer: Father, "sustain me as You have promised, that I may live; disappoint me not in my hope" (Ps 119:116).

Promise: "Take delight in the Lord, and He will grant you your heart's requests." -Ps 37:4

Praise: Monica prays without ceasing and with expectant hope for the conversion of her children.

"WILL HE FIND FAITH?" (SEE LK 18:8) - One Bread, One Body, 2/25/2019

Monday, February 25, 2019

Sirach 1:1-10, Psalm 93:1-2, 5, Mark 9:14-29
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022519.cfm

"WILL HE FIND FAITH?" (SEE LK 18:8)

"What an unbelieving lot you are!" -Mark 9:19

Sometimes the Lord does things in our lives whether or not we have faith. Often, however, the Lord wants us to make a free decision to accept His grace. We express our freedom by faith. For example, Jesus told the father of a demon-possessed son: "Everything is possible for anyone who has faith" (Mk 9:23, JB). The father realized that Jesus was calling him to have faith. So he exclaimed: "I do have faith! Help the little faith I have!" (Mk 9:24, JB)

In that situation, Jesus called not only the father to faith but also Jesus' disciples and the large crowd with them. Jesus said: "What an unbelieving lot you are! How long must I remain with you? How long can I endure you?" (Mk 9:19) Jesus felt frustrated with those who did not have or exercise faith. Jesus promised: "I assure you, if you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you would be able to say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it would move. Nothing would be impossible for you" (Mt 17:20). We are saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8). "Without faith, it is impossible to please" God (Heb 11:6). But Jesus questioned: "When the Son of Man comes, will He find any faith on the earth?" (Lk 18:8)

Let us cry out to God: "I do believe! Help my lack of faith!" (see Mk 9:24)

Prayer: Father, increase my faith, even if I have to suffer.

Promise: "Fear of the Lord warms the heart, giving gladness and joy and length of days." -Sir 1:10

Praise: When Paul decided to stand up for Christ at work, he found he was not alone. Now several gather in Jesus' name (Mt 18:20).

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday NAILING DOWN MERCY
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/24/2019

"Abishai whispered to David: 'God has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day. Let me nail him
to the ground with one thrust of the spear.' " -1 Samuel 26:8

Abishai gave David the traditional "wisdom of war," that is: "Kill, nail, and spear the enemies
before they do it to you first." In other words, "do unto others before they do unto you." David
surprisingly rejected Abishai's standard advice (1 Sm 26:9). In this he prefigured Jesus, the Son of
David.

Jesus didn't just talk about having mercy on our enemies. He paid the price for mercy by taking on
Himself the just punishments which His enemies deserved. Instead of nailing His enemies to the ground
(see 1 Sm 26:8), He let His enemies nail Him to the cross. Instead of thrusting a spear into His
enemies, He let them thrust a spear into His side (see Jn 19:34). Jesus knows that treating guilty
enemies with mercy would be unjust. So He fulfilled justice out of love for His enemies by paying the
price for mercy on Calvary.

Therefore, "love your enemy and do good" (Lk 6:35). "Be compassionate, as your Father is compassionate.
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Pardon, and
you shall be pardoned" (Lk 6:36-37).

Prayer: Jesus, may I receive and give Your crucified, precious mercy.

Promise: "Give, and it shall be given to you." -Lk 6:38

Praise: Praise be to Jesus Christ, the risen King of Glory. Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"HOPES OF MILLIONS"

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that
great number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite
and yet recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.

"EFFECTIVE HELP"

The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to
concrete action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

HEAVENLY BODIES - One Bread, One Body, 2/23/2019

Saturday, February 23, 2019, St. Polycarp

Hebrews 11:1-7, Psalm 145:2-5, 10-11, Mark 9:2-13
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022319.cfm

HEAVENLY BODIES

"He was transfigured before their eyes and His clothes became dazzlingly white." -Mark 9:2-3

On Transfiguration mountain, Peter, James, and John saw Jesus' glorified body. They also saw how their own bodies would look in Heaven. "He will give a new form to this lowly body of ours and remake it according to the pattern of His glorified body" (Phil 3:21).

Imagine Jesus' transfigured body as the pattern according to which our lowly bodies will be remade. God began renovating our bodies when He bought them at the price of His blood (1 Cor 6:20). Yet even though He owns us, He will not move in unless we offer our bodies as a living sacrifice (Rm 12:1).

Then the Holy Spirit will come to us and make our bodies His temple (1 Cor 6:19). Throughout life, the Spirit will do much in our bodily temples. He will set us free from enslavement to bodily desires. He will discipline our bodies and master them (1 Cor 9:27).

Finally, the Spirit will raise us from the dead and clothe mortality with immortality and corruptibility with incorruptibility (1 Cor 15:53). "He Who raised Christ from the dead will bring your mortal bodies to life also, through His Spirit dwelling in you" (Rm 8:11). Then our bodies will look like Jesus' glorified, transfigured body. Alleluia!

ONE FOR ALL, AND ALL FOR ONE - One Bread, One Body, 2/22/2019

Friday, February 22, 2019, Chair of St. Peter

ONE FOR ALL, AND ALL FOR ONE

"I for My part declare to you, you are 'Rock,' and on this rock I will build My Church, and the jaws of death shall not prevail against it. I will entrust to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven." -Matthew 16:18-19

The Lord wants us to be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). "It was in one Spirit" that we "were baptized into one body" (1 Cor 12:13). The source, center, and culmination of our faith is receiving and being in unity, union, and Communion with the Lord and each other.

The Lord has provided practical means for us to become one. He has given us His representative on earth, the Pope, as a center of unity (see Mt 16:18-19). Just as receiving Holy Communion is not merely a spiritualized abstraction but actually receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus, so our unity in the body of Christ is more than a spiritual attitude. Our unity is based on a relationship with the Pope in love, submission, and obedience. We celebrate this relationship on today's feast of the Chair of St. Peter. We are one with and in Christ. We are one with and through the Pope. We are one with each other. Let us celebrate our unity and the papacy.

Prayer: Father, make us one by Your standards and in Your ways.

Promise: "Be examples to the flock, not lording it over those assigned to you, so that when the chief Shepherd appears you will win for yourselves the unfading crown of glory." -1 Pt 5:3-4

Praise: Jesus asked St. Peter three times "Do you love me?" Peter replied three times, "Yes, Lord, you know that I do" (Jn 21:15-17). With that, Peter accepted Jesus' call to become the first Pope of the Catholic Church.

(Ladies, our annual Women's retreat is March 15-16. Join your sisters in Christ as we look to Mary this Lent to guide us closer to her Son. For more information or to register, call 513-373-2397 or see our website www.presentationministries.com or e-mail us at retreats@presentationministries.com.)

GOD'S FIRST WORDS TO US - One Bread, One Body, 2/21/2019

Thursday, February 21, 2019, St. Peter Damian

Genesis 9:1-13, Psalm 102:16-21, 29, 22-23, Mark 8:27-33
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022119.cfm

GOD'S FIRST WORDS TO US

"God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: 'Be fertile and multiply and fill the earth.' " -Genesis 9:1

One of the first things God said to Noah after the flood was the first thing He said to the human race after creating us: "Be fertile and multiply" (Gn 1:28). God concluded His blessing of Noah with the words: "Be fertile, then, and multiply" (Gn 9:7; see also Gn 1:22).

The Lord has made it very clear that children are a blessing from Him (see Ps 127:3) and should be welcomed (see Mt 18:5). In the new covenant, however, the Lord wants us to multiply not only people but also people who are His disciples (see Mt 28:19). He insists that we bear abundantly the fruit of evangelization, or we will be "like a withered, rejected branch, picked up to be thrown in the fire and burnt" (Jn 15:6).

Naturally, the Lord wants human beings to be created within the marriage covenant through sexual relations and brought to birth through the mother's suffering in pregnancy and delivery. Supernaturally, the Lord makes us new creations (see Gal 6:15) and gives us new birth (see Jn 3:3, 5) by our covenant relationship with Jesus (see Jn 15:5) and our suffering for love of Him.

Don't be abortifacient or contraceptive. Choose love and life-giving pain. Choose life and be fruitful.

Prayer: Father make me faithful, fruitful, and pleasing to You.

Promise: "The nations shall revere Your name, O Lord, and all the kings of the earth Your glory." -Ps 102:16

Praise: St. Peter Damian was a hermit, abbot, and a cardinal bishop. He worked hard to tighten the spiritual practices of the Church. In the end, he lived again as a hermit. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1828.

DOES IT REALLY TAKE A VILLAGE? - One Bread, One Body, 2/20/2019

Wednesday, February 20, 2019

Genesis 8:6-13, 20-22, Psalm 116:12-15, 18-19, Mark 8:22-26
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022019.cfm

DOES IT REALLY TAKE A VILLAGE?

"Do not even go into the village." -Mark 8:26

The village in today's passage was Bethsaida, a place Jesus elsewhere condemned for its advanced hardened and unrepentant attitude (see Mt 11:21-24). This is the only incident in the Gospels in which Jesus had to heal a person in two stages. Possibly the extreme hardness of the village made it more difficult for a healing to take permanent root.

First, Jesus "led [the blind man] outside the village" (Mk 8:23). Healing often occurs best away from the skeptical crowd, by either getting away from the crowd or putting the crowd out of the healing place (see Mk 6:6; Mt 9:25). Jesus healed the man. However, the blind man's sight was not clear but cloudy. This may be an indication of the long-term impact of living in a hardened, skeptical culture, much like the present "culture of death." Then a second time Jesus laid His hands on the blind man's eyes and "he saw perfectly; his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly" (Mk 8:25).

Finally, Jesus sent the healed man "home with the admonition, 'Do not even go into the village' " (Mk 8:26). Jesus likely meant by this that the man had been healed fully, physically and spiritually. He was not to return to the hardened culture in the village. He must cultivate his new life in the Lord and never risk losing his restored sight in the spiritual blindness of the village.

"Do you want to be healed?" (Jn 5:6). "Do not even go into the village" (Mk 8:26). Live for the Lord alone.

Prayer: Father, may my village be centered on attending Mass as often as possible.

Promise: " My vows to the Lord I will pay." -Ps 116:14

Praise: Margaret separated from her drug-abusing "friends" when she returned to the Church.

HEART TO HEART - One Bread, One Body, 2/19/2019

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

Genesis 6:5-8; 7:1-5, 10, Psalm 29:1-4, 9-10, Mark 8:14-21
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021919.cfm

HEART TO HEART

"His heart was grieved." -Genesis 6:6

God's "heart was grieved" because man's heart desired nothing but evil (Gn 6:5-6). God's heart was broken because man's heart is hardened, disobedient, and rebellious.

Jesus revealed the condition of His heart through the image of the Sacred Heart, bleeding and surrounded with a crown of thorns. God said His heart was grieved, but no one ever suspected that this would be literally true when God became a man and thereby actually had a human heart. Likewise, no one suspected that our hearts would be so perverse that we would murder God by our sins and even try to stab Him in the heart after His death (see Jn 19:34). Moreover, no one could understand how God would fulfill Ezekiel's prophecy and give us a new heart (Ez 36:26). However, by the Lord's perfect love for us, and from His crucified body and pierced heart, we can be baptized and receive a new heart.

God's heart is a mystery of perfect love and excruciating pain. Don't continue to pierce His heart through sin, but plunge into the mysterious love of His Sacred Heart.

Prayer: "Sacred Heart of Jesus, I implore that I may love Thee more and more."

Promise: " 'Do you remember when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets of fragments you gathered up?' They answered, 'Twelve.' " -Mk 8:19

Praise: Before giving his life to the Lord, Robert strongly desired worldly pleasures. Jesus has totally transformed Robert's desires and now his desires align with those of God.

SIN IS A LURKING DEMON (SEE GN 4:7) - One Bread, One Body, 2/18/2019

Monday, February 18, 2019

Genesis 4:1-15, 25, Psalm 50:1, 8, 16-17, 20-21, Mark 8:11-13
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021819.cfm

SIN IS A LURKING DEMON (SEE GN 4:7)

"I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes." -Psalm 50:21

Cain became "resentful and crestfallen" because Abel's offering was accepted by the Lord but Cain's offering was not (Gn 4:5-6). Then the Lord intervened and called Cain to repentance. He warned Cain: "Sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master" (Gn 4:7). Cain refused to listen to the Lord and proceeded to commit the first murder (Gn 4:8).

When we sin, the Lord in His mercy intervenes. Unless we listen to Him and jump off the bandwagon of sin, it will take us to places where we don't want to be, to people we will regret being with, and to sins we never thought we'd commit. The runaway train of sin will eventually lead us to death, damnation, and hell (see Rm 6:23).

Obviously, we should never get into the vehicle named "sin." But if we do sin, we must jump out of sin by accepting God's grace to repent, forgive, and confess our sins as soon as possible. Therefore:

* We should drop everything and lose no time in being reconciled with our brothers and sisters in Christ (Mt 5:24-25).
* "The sun must not go down on your wrath" (Eph 4:26).
* "See to it that no man falls away from the grace of God; that no bitter root springs up through which many may become defiled" (Heb 12:15).

"Sin is a demon lurking at the door" (Gn 4:7). Sin is a cancer which will spread and kill you unless you repent of all of it as quickly as possible. Repent and be sin's master (Gn 4:7).

Prayer: Father, impress on me my need for frequent Confession.

Promise: " 'God has granted me more offspring in place of Abel,' she said, 'because Cain slew him.' " -Gn 4:25

Praise: Ron burned his pornographic magazines and gave his life to Jesus.

PM eNewsletter 6th Sunday in ordinary time

February 17th Sixth Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, during this ordinary time, please keep us from ever thinking that in You any time is ordinary.

Lord, remind us that praise and glory to You, should be the main stay of our existence.

We should constantly be amazed by the never ending love that You have for all people.

Let us come to You in joyful adoration and sit and worship You as often as we can.

Let us see You in others and help us spread the good news through our words and actions.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday WHAT ABOUT JESUS?
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/17/2019

"Blest shall you be when men hate you, when they ostracize you and insult you and proscribe your name
as evil because of the Son of Man." -Luke 6:22

Jesus is a Sign that is contradicted (Lk 2:34). He says: "Blest are you poor" (Lk 6:20) and "Woe to you
rich" (Lk 6:24). By contrast, most of us say the opposite. The rich don't like to hear their lives may
be wasted (see Eccl 1:2), and the poor don't like the idea that God may never want them to be rich.
Jesus can get both ends of the economic spectrum upset with Him. In fact, He got people so upset that
they (and we) crucified Him (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). Jesus said: "Blest is the man
who finds no stumbling block in Me" (Mt 11:6).

Right now, Jesus is calling you to give your whole life to Him now and forever. If anyone else made that
demand of you, it would be very unreasonable. However, Jesus died on the cross for you and rose from the
dead for you. He, and He alone, has the right to expect everything from you. Will you accept Him on His
terms, or contradict and reject Him? Will you listen to Him and repent, or crucify the Son of God for
yourself and hold "Him up to contempt"? (Heb 6:6) What will you do with Jesus?

Prayer: Jesus, may You be the Cornerstone (Ps 118:22) and not the Stumbling Stone (1 Pt 2:7-8) of my life.

Promise: "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord." -Jer 17:7

Praise: All praise to the risen Jesus, Victor-King! You reign in glory forever. Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
https://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-11.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"

There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end
hunger, and this ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by
all peoples and all religious persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at
the heart of all initiatives and consists in "doing to another what we would want done to
ourselves."

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT

... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow
themselves to succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the
minimum needed to lead a dignified life.

THE CHURCH AND THE POOR

For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine
Founder has entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and
malnutrition in multiple ways and through her various structures and associations,
remembering that those who suffer from misery are not different from us. They share our
flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and support them, in such a way
that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may boast its own
identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.

WHAT ABOUT JESUS? - One Bread, One Body, 2/17/2019

Sunday, February 17, 2019, 6th Sunday Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 17:5-8, 1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20, Psalm 1:1-4, 6, Luke 6:17, 20-26

WHAT ABOUT JESUS?

"Blest shall you be when men hate you, when they ostracize you and insult you and proscribe your name as evil because of the Son of Man." -Luke 6:22

Jesus is a Sign that is contradicted (Lk 2:34). He says: "Blest are you poor" (Lk 6:20) and "Woe to you rich" (Lk 6:24). By contrast, most of us say the opposite. The rich don't like to hear their lives may be wasted (see Eccl 1:2), and the poor don't like the idea that God may never want them to be rich. Jesus can get both ends of the economic spectrum upset with Him. In fact, He got people so upset that they (and we) crucified Him (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). Jesus said: "Blest is the man who finds no stumbling block in Me" (Mt 11:6).

Right now, Jesus is calling you to give your whole life to Him now and forever. If anyone else made that demand of you, it would be very unreasonable. However, Jesus died on the cross for you and rose from the dead for you. He, and He alone, has the right to expect everything from you. Will you accept Him on His terms, or contradict and reject Him? Will you listen to Him and repent, or crucify the Son of God for yourself and hold "Him up to contempt"? (Heb 6:6) What will you do with Jesus?

Prayer: Jesus, may You be the Cornerstone (Ps 118:22) and not the Stumbling Stone (1 Pt 2:7-8) of my life.

Promise: "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord." -Jer 17:7

Praise: All praise to the risen Jesus, Victor-King! You reign in glory forever. Alleluia!

NO SWEAT - One Bread, One Body, 2/16/2019

NO SWEAT

"By the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat." -Genesis 3:19

God had told man that he would get bread to eat by the sweat of his face (Gn 3:19), by working hard to plant, till, harvest, grind, and prepare grain for bread. Nevertheless, God then mercifully sent His only Son to feed us bread, and heavenly bread at that (Jn 6:32-33ff). In Jesus, the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35), God has reversed the heavy consequences of the fall of man. Whoever eats the bread Jesus gives will never be hungry (Jn 6:35) and will have eternal life (Jn 6:51).

Even with this awesome promise, people routinely skip Mass or leave Mass early. Yet the crowd of people in today's Gospel reading was so caught up in hearing Jesus speak the words of God that they would not leave His side even though they were starting to grow hungry (Mk 8:2). Here was a group of people so hungry for the Word of God proclaimed through Jesus that they wouldn't go home. Though the crowd had been with Jesus for three days, they still stayed with Him (Mk 8:2). They used the sweat of their brow to remain with Jesus rather than work for their own food. How this attitude of spiritual hunger and trust must have delighted Jesus! He multiplied bread so that this crowd could be fed (Mk 8:6ff).

In Jesus, we are no longer bound to work for food. Now our work is to have faith in Him (Jn 6:27-29) and spend our sweat loving, serving, and worshipping Him. Desire the Bread of Life more than the food of the world. He will provide for your needs (Phil 4:19).

Prayer: Father, re-orient all my desires to line up with Yours.

Promise: "The people in the crowd ate until they had their fill." -Mk 8:8

Praise: Jesus gave Benny a special birthday present. Jesus delivered him from smoking three packs of cigarettes daily for thirty-five years.

OPEN ARMS? - One Bread, One Body, 2/15/2019

Friday, February 15, 2019

Genesis 3:1-8, Psalm 32:1-2, 5-7, Mark 7:31-37

OPEN ARMS?

Jesus "said to him, 'Ephphatha!' (that is, 'Be opened!')" -Mark 7:34

When Adam and Eve sinned, they were expelled from Paradise, and the door to Paradise was closed (Gn 3:23-24). Human beings then began to be closed off to God and to one another (see Gn 3:8ff). After the first sin, death entered the world and closed us off from the happiness of everlasting life. During the centuries following the first sin, more and more lives were closed down by sin's escalating effects, such as war, sickness, starvation, racism, and violence.

Then God became Man and walked into a closed world to open it completely to God. Jesus "looked up to heaven and emitted a groan. He said to" a deaf man: " 'Ephphatha!' (that is, 'Be opened!')" (Mk 7:34) This is an example of what Jesus did throughout His public ministry. He eventually emitted the ultimate groan on the cross and opened the whole world to salvation (see Mt 27:50-53).

Jesus is knocking at the door (Rv 3:20). If you open up to Him, He will open you to eternal life and love. "Open wide the doors to Jesus!" (Pope St. John Paul II's year 2000 Great Jubilee message)

Prayer: Father, I repent of being closed to Your will. I open wide my heart (see 2 Cor 6:11, 13).

Promise: "Their amazement went beyond all bounds: 'He has done everything well! He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!' " -Mk 7:37

Praise: George stopped compartmentalizing his life and let Jesus integrate His lordship over his work, family, and worship.

(Open the door to Jesus by reading His Word. For encouragement, order, listen to, or download "Principles of Bible Interpretation" on CD 79-1 or DVD 79 on our website.)

THE REALITY OF EXTENSIVE DEMONIC ACTIVITY

"When she got home, she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone." -Mark 7:30

Our secular humanistic society likes to pretend that there are no demons, or, if there are demons, that not many of them are active around us. However, Pope St. John Paul II has stated that we in the Western world live in a culture of death. This implies that Satan, the prince of death (Heb 2:14), probably has his hosts of demons very active in our society, cities, neighborhoods, churches, and families. In our times, it may be even more appropriate to say that "our battle is not against human forces but against the principalities and powers, the rulers of this world of darkness, the evil spirits in regions above" (Eph 6:12).

When we admit the degree of demonic activity around us, we are in touch with reality and thereby have the possibility of applying Jesus' total victory over the devil to the reality of our daily lives. Jesus has already destroyed the devil's works (1 Jn 3:8). He is enthroned at the right hand of God the Father and is waiting "until His enemies are placed beneath His feet" (Heb 10:13). We can bring down all the strongholds, sophistries, and proud pretensions of the evil one (2 Cor 10:4-5) simply by following the Lord's instructions. When we have decided to obey the Lord completely, in every area of life (2 Cor 10:6), the Lord "will quickly crush Satan under [our] feet" (Rm 16:20).

Demons are all around us, but the Lord will put them under us when we accept Him over us.

Prayer: Father, put me in touch with reality, especially the effects of Jesus' Paschal mystery.

Promise: "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body." -Gn 2:24

Praise: St. Methodius continued the mission to the Moravian nation after his brother St. Cyril died.

GOD IS GOOD - One Bread, One Body, 2/13/2019

Wednesday, February 13, 2019

Genesis 2:4-9, 15-17, Psalm 104:1-2, 27-30, Mark 7:14-23

GOD IS GOOD

"The Lord God planted a garden in Eden...and He placed there the man whom He had formed." -Genesis 2:8

God freely and lovingly created man and gave him the breath of life. God not only provided man with an abundance of good food, but He also blessed man's spirit by creating an environment that was "delightful to look at" (Gn 2:9). All of this was a sheer gift from God. In the world He created, God did not require man to produce his own food; that requirement was chosen by man when Adam and Eve decided to handle their own affairs (Gn 3:19). God appointed man to "care for" the earth (Gn 2:15), and man didn't care. People might say that "God just doesn't care," but the truth is that the injustices of this world occur because man didn't and doesn't care for God's creation.

On Friday, we will hear that the free choice of man is what has caused the disorder that exists in our present world. Even that tragic choice can't change the nature of God. God is good. He loves the people He has created and He provides everything necessary for each one of them. He has not changed (see Heb 13:8; Mal 3:6), and He still sends forth provisions to this earth to provide for our needs (see Mt 5:45; 6:30; Phil 4:19). "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good" (Ps 136:1).

Prayer: Father, thank You for giving me the breath of life. I will spend my life giving thanks and praise to You.

Promise: "When You send forth Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth." -Ps 104:30

Praise: Becoming a parent helped Peter better appreciate his heavenly Father. He focuses daily on representing the Father's love to each of his children.

MOVING TWICE - One Bread, One Body, 2/12/2019

Tuesday, February 12, 2019

Genesis 1:20-2:4, Psalm 8:4-9, Mark 7:1-13
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021219.cfm

MOVING TWICE

"This people pays Me lip service but their heart is far from Me. Empty is the reverence they do Me." -Mark 7:6-7

Are you a person after God's own heart who will carry out His every wish? (see Acts 13:22) Have you given your heart to the Lord? Is your heart beating as one with the Lord's heart? Is your heart close to or far from the Lord?

It is difficult to know our hearts (see Jer 17:9). However, the Lord has given us a way to judge the position of our hearts. Jesus said: "Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be" (Lk 12:34). If your treasure is in the bank, an IRA, or a money market account, then your hearts may not be near "our Father Who art in heaven." But if you "sell what you have and give alms" (Lk 12:33), you may be re-investing your treasures in heaven. This can transfer your heart to heaven. Then your heart will be near the Lord, your reverence will not be empty, and you will not be self-serving but God-serving (see Mk 7:6). Therefore, move your heart by moving your money and possessions to the Lord.

Prayer: Father, may I not put my heart in the wrong place.

Promise: "God created man in His image; in the divine image He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them, saying: 'Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.' " -Gn 1:27-28

Praise: Mark regularly gives to both his parish and the missions.

CREATION AND RE-CREATION - One Bread, One Body, 2/11/2019

Monday, February 11, 2019, Our Lady of Lourdes

Genesis 1:1-19, Psalm 104:1-2, 5-6, 10, 12, 24, 35, Mark 6:53-56
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021119.cfm

CREATION AND RE-CREATION

"God saw how good it was." -Genesis 1:10, 12

God's first creation was "good" (Gn 1:10, 12, 18, 25). God's new creation in Jesus Christ is even better. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" (2 Cor 5:17). "All that matters is that one is created anew" (Gal 6:15).

God made His first creation "good," but through the deceit of Satan, man fell into sin. Since then, all creation has been groaning in sorrow and agony (Rm 8:22). Then God gave His only Son to renew mankind and creation - not just to restore them to their original goodness, but to make them wondrously new and far better than before. Jesus healed all creation (Mk 6:56) and made it new (Is 43:19; Rv 21:5).

What would you rather have, the good or the best? Many want a pristine world, where Mother Nature is left unspoiled. The environment is made into nearly a god in itself. God did make a beautiful world, and safeguarding it is a good thing. However, Jesus has come to renew creation in the Church. Jesus' idea is the best one. He says: "See, I make all things new!" (Rv 21:5)

Creation yearns for its fulfillment in Jesus (Rm 8:22). Do your part to restore creation from its groaning over sin. Repent of anything that prevents Jesus from restoring you.

Prayer: Father, mold me as You wish. I give You permission to form and reform my soul the way You see fit.

Promise: "All who touched [Jesus] got well." -Mk 6:56

Praise: The Lord, through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, shrunk the growth in Clara's throat.
