VERY INVITING? - One Bread, One Body, 6/1/2019

Saturday, June 1, 2019, St. Justin, Pentecost Novena - Day 2

VERY INVITING?

He was "instructed in the new way of the Lord. Apollos was a man full of spiritual fervor. He spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, although he knew only of John's baptism." -Acts 18:25

Apollos was:

* "a man of eloquence" (Acts 18:24),
* "an authority on Scripture" (Acts 18:24),
* "instructed in the new way of the Lord" (Acts 18:25),
* teaching "accurately about Jesus" (Acts 18:25), and
* speaking "fearlessly in the synagogue" (Acts 18:26).

Nevertheless, Apollos "knew only of John's baptism." Apollos did not have new life in Christ and in the Holy Spirit.

Why wasn't Apollos invited to give His life to Jesus long before Priscilla and Aquila "took him home and explained to him God's new way in greater detail"? (Acts 18:26) There are various historical reasons which partially explain Apollos, a teacher of Christians, not having been more quickly invited to be a Christian. However, we might ask ourselves another question: Why are Christians today not challenging each other more often to live radically and fully their baptismal promises? Many baptized and confirmed Christians have never totally committed their lives to the Lord. Therefore, we need to follow the example of Priscilla and Aquila by inviting others, including Christians, into our homes in order to invite them to give themselves 100% to Jesus.

To be zealous and eager about person-to-person evangelization, particularly in our homes, we need faith and love, that is, we need to receive more powerfully the Holy Spirit, Who gives us faith (1 Cor 12:9) and love (Gal 5:22). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, on this second day of the Pentecost novena, impel me by love to share my faith very freely (see 2 Cor 5:14).

Promise: "The Father already loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God." -Jn 16:27

Praise: St. Justin became the first Christian philosopher and was beheaded for his staunch adherence to the Christian religion.

VISITING HOURS - One Bread, One Body, 5/31/2019

Friday, May 31, 2019, Visitation, Pentecost Novena-Day 1

Zephaniah 3:14-18 or, Romans 12:9-16, Isaiah 12:2-6, Luke 1:39-56

VISITING HOURS

"Be not discouraged!" -Zephaniah 3:16

Recently, I was hospitalized for a short time. No one knew I was in the hospital, as I had no time to call people to pass the word. Naturally, I had no visitors during that brief stay. I could easily relate to Elizabeth's experience on the day that Mary visited her. Elizabeth had gone into seclusion for five months (Lk 1:24), implying that she had no visitors in that interval. She couldn't have expected Mary to visit, since to her knowledge Mary was not aware she was pregnant. God directly informed Mary of Elizabeth's pregnancy, and put it in Mary's heart to visit her (Lk 1:39ff).

This means that the feast of the Visitation of Mary is a great sign of hope. When we need a visitor, let us ask God to send Mary to us, even if no one else is aware that we need encouragement (see Zep 3:16). When we seclude ourselves from others, Mary is not subject to our visiting restrictions. She is favored by God (Lk 1:30) with inside information on our condition. She has a motherly heart for us that loves its way into our life. She can't stop from being concerned about her discouraged, suffering child.

Is there any way to keep a mother from visiting her beloved child? No, we can't keep Mary out of our lives. She loves us too much. Our decision is whether or not to welcome her. Mary was rejected by the innkeepers in Bethlehem (Lk 2:7), and is still rejected by some Christians today. "Open wide your hearts" (2 Cor 6:13) to the mother of Jesus. Let Mary visit and love you.

Prayer: Jesus, may I love and welcome Mary as You do.

Promise: "You have no further misfortune to fear." -Zep 3:15

Praise: The Blessed Virgin Mary did not keep the Good News to herself but shared her Son with her cousin and us. This act of kindness helped release the power of the Holy Spirit into the world.

SWING SET? - One Bread, One Body, 5/30/2019

Thursday, May 30, 2019

Acts 18:1-8, Psalm 98:1-4, John 16:16-20

SWING SET?

"I tell you truly: you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices; you will grieve for a time, but your grief will be turned into joy." -John 16:20

Imagine a little boy sitting in a swing. This child's slightly older brother begins to push his brother in the swing. At first, the younger brother is delighted. Then his brother pushes the swing harder. The younger brother begins to become afraid. He cries to his brother to stop. The older brother pushes even harder. The younger child begins to scream and cry.

This scene is analogous to trusting in the Spirit. When the wind of the Spirit blows our swing, it can be delightful. However, if the Holy Spirit pushes harder, we might become afraid. Because of our fears, we can refuse to let the wind of the Spirit lift us up to the heights.

The Holy Spirit swung Paul so hard that he was sent to be a missionary to the Gentiles (see Acts 18:6). The cross is the ultimate push of the Holy Spirit. We are naturally afraid to be lifted up to the cross.

Tomorrow begins the Pentecost novena, which is often all about growing to trust the Holy Spirit before He pushes your swing harder. Pray with all your heart the Pentecost novena.

Prayer: Jesus, lifted up on the cross, in the Resurrection, and in Your Ascension, may I let you draw me to Yourself (Jn 12:32).

Promise: "Many of the Corinthians, too, who heard Paul believed and were baptized." -Acts 18:8

Praise: At a healing service, Jesus healed Nora's torn rotator cuff, restoring her full range of motion.

"THE COMPANY OF SCOFFERS" (SEE PS 1:1) - One Bread, One Body, 5/29/2019

Wednesday, May 29, 2019

"THE COMPANY OF SCOFFERS" (SEE PS 1:1)

"Some began to scoff..." -Acts 17:32, RNAB

St. Paul attempted to spread the Good News of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ everywhere, even in the Areopagus of his day. Some scoffed and sneered at Paul and his message (Acts 17:32). Psalm 22 describes prophetically the reaction of the crowd to the crucified Jesus: "All who see Me scoff at Me; they mock Me with parted lips, they wag their heads" (Ps 22:8). It can be discouraging to be scoffed at, particularly by those who do not give you a full and fair hearing, and by those whose name you don't even know.

Nevertheless, Paul strode bravely into the Areopagus and proclaimed the Gospel. He spread the Word of God far and wide so that at least some people may be saved (1 Cor 9:22). Moreover, a few people in the Areopagus did convert (Acts 17:34). Even scoffers and skeptics can convert. St. Thomas scoffed at the other apostles when they told Him they had seen the risen Lord, but within a week, Thomas proclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" (Jn 20:24-28).

Modern society is also not without scoffers and skeptics. The new Areopagus, the new marketplace, seems to be social media. Many scoff anonymously through biting comments. There is even a propensity to shame and bully those who post opinions not "politically correct." The company of scoffers and the insolent (see Ps 1:1) is alive and well in cyberspace.

In two days, we begin the Pentecost Novena. On the day of Pentecost, some in the crowd in Jerusalem initially scoffed at the apostles (Acts 2:12-13). Yet the apostles were not deterred from witnessing, and thousands were led to faith (Acts 2:41). The loving message of the Holy Spirit is the perfect medicine for a company of scoffers in the Areopagus of your life.

Prayer: Father, give me the Spirit to love the scoffers in my life.

Promise: "He will guide you to all truth." -Jn 16:13

Praise: Ann's teenage daughter writes a pro-Catholic blog.

GET OUT OF JAIL FREE - One Bread, One Body, 5/28/2019

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

Acts 16:22-34, Psalm 138:1-3, 7-8, John 16:5-11
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/052819.cfm

GET OUT OF JAIL FREE

"Do not harm yourself! We are all still here." -Acts 16:28

Because Paul and Silas had received the Holy Spirit, they had the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16) and were filled with that perfect love without fear. Like their Savior, they were focused on salvation of souls and not on their own needs. Paul and Silas focused only on the will of God, so they thought instantly of the salvation of the jailer, who was about to commit suicide (Acts 16:27). The jailer accepted salvation, took Paul and Silas into his house for a few hours, and his entire household received and accepted salvation in Christ. Incredibly, Paul and Silas then returned into prison with the jailer and awaited their release from prison through legal channels. One could imagine that, upon observing the strength of Paul and Silas' character in the face of hardship, it would strengthen the jailer's belief in their words and confirm his newfound faith. That jailer could trust his life to the Lord because Paul and Silas trusted their lives so radically to Jesus for his sake.

You may be in such a difficult marriage, job, or family situation that it seems you are in jail. When your "get out of jail free card" presents itself, much like the earthquake shook off the chains of Paul and Silas, would you jump at the chance to set yourself free? Or could you stay in the that situation for the salvation of your own jailer if that was God's will?

"Receive the Holy Spirit" this Pentecost (Jn 20:22). Set many free by your Spirit-filled, fearless love.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I offer my life as Your servant. Use me as You will.

Promise: "I tell you the sober truth: it is much better for you that I go. If I fail to go, the Paraclete will never come to you, whereas if I go, I will send Him to you." -Jn 16:7

Praise: In a seemingly hopeless marriage, Susan put hope in Jesus and continued to pour out love toward her spouse.

KNOW SPIRIT - NO FEAR - One Bread, One Body, 5/27/2019

Acts 16:11-15, Psalm 149:1-6, 9, John 15:26-16:4

KNOW SPIRIT - NO FEAR

"When the Paraclete comes, the Spirit of truth Who comes from the Father - and Whom I Myself will send from the Father - He will bear witness on My behalf." -John 15:26

The Holy Spirit bears witness on behalf of Jesus, and those who live in the Spirit must "also witness" (Jn 15:27, our transl). To witness for the risen Jesus is beyond human power. That is why Jesus' witnesses must receive the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).

It is both liberating and fearsome to do something beyond our human powers. For example, if Jesus gave you power to walk on water, would you be afraid to take your first steps? (see Mt 14:28-31) Life in the Spirit is by definition beyond our understanding and in some ways beyond our control. This can be a problem for those who base their security on controlling some of the circumstances of life. The Holy Spirit gives us both the occasions to feel fear and the faith to overcome fears.

Moreover, if it is a struggle for someone who is a willing witness for Jesus, imagine how threatened those who oppose or are indifferent to the Holy Spirit may become when the Holy Spirit proves them wrong (Jn 16:8). It is easy to see why the Greek word translated "witness" also can be translated "martyr." So even if Jesus' witnesses are not fearful of the Holy Spirit, they are strongly tempted to be fearful of the world in its opposition to the Spirit.

Do not fear the Holy Spirit. Do not fear those opposed to the Holy Spirit. Be a witness for Jesus, "for the Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit" (2 Tm 1:7). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, may love in the Spirit leave no room for fear in my life (see 1 Jn 4:18).

Promise: "The Lord opened her heart." -Acts 16:14

Praise: St. Augustine of Canterbury planted the seed of faith among the English. He converted many in England to the faith by working miraculous signs and wonders in the name of Jesus.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday DECISION-MAKING
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/26/2019

"It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and ours too." -Acts 15:28

Two weeks from today, we will celebrate Pentecost. We will have the possibility of receiving in a new
way the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, Whom the Father will send in Jesus' name (Jn 14:26). The Spirit
plans to instruct us in everything and remind us of all that Jesus told us (Jn 14:26). This instructing
and reminding from the Spirit, if discerned and heeded, will have such an effect on our lives that our
decisions will also be the decisions of the Holy Spirit (Acts 15:28). Therefore, our decisions will be
correct, life-changing, life-giving, miraculously wise, and fruitful for God's kingdom.

Some of us may have messed up our marriages, finances, employment, family life, and lifestyle by a
series of bad decisions. The way out of this situation is to make good decisions by the power of the
Spirit. Therefore, we must receive the Holy Spirit. We must go into the upper room of prayer,
repentance, and conversion. There we will receive the Spirit, Who will change our lives, hearts, minds,
and decisions.

Prayer: Father, may I be able to hear and discern what the Spirit wishes to tell me.

Promise: "The city had no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was
the Lamb." -Rv 21:23

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life! (Jn 11:25) All glory be to Him!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
https://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-11.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"

There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end hunger, and
this ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by all peoples and all
religious persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at the heart of all initiatives and
consists in "doing to another what we would want done to ourselves."

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT

... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves
to succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a
dignified life.

THE CHURCH AND THE POOR

For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways
and through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery
are not different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help

DECISION-MAKING - One Bread, One Body, 5/26/2019

Sunday, May 26, 2019, Sixth Sunday of Easter

Acts 15:1-2, 22-29, Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23, Psalm 67:2-3, 5-6, 8, John 14:23-29

DECISION-MAKING

"It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and ours too." -Acts 15:28

Two weeks from today, we will celebrate Pentecost. We will have the possibility of receiving in a new way the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, Whom the Father will send in Jesus' name (Jn 14:26). The Spirit plans to instruct us in everything and remind us of all that Jesus told us (Jn 14:26). This instructing and reminding from the Spirit, if discerned and heeded, will have such an effect on our lives that our decisions will also be the decisions of the Holy Spirit (Acts 15:28). Therefore, our decisions will be correct, life-changing, life-giving, miraculously wise, and fruitful for God's kingdom.

Some of us may have messed up our marriages, finances, employment, family life, and lifestyle by a series of bad decisions. The way out of this situation is to make good decisions by the power of the Spirit. Therefore, we must receive the Holy Spirit. We must go into the upper room of prayer, repentance, and conversion. There we will receive the Spirit, Who will change our lives, hearts, minds, and decisions.

Prayer: Father, may I be able to hear and discern what the Spirit wishes to tell me.

Promise: "The city had no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb." -Rv 21:23

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life! (Jn 11:25) All glory be to Him!

ARE YOU DOING YOUR JOBS? - One Bread, One Body, 5/25/2019

Saturday, May 25, 2019, Venerable Bede,, Pope St. Gregory VII,, St. Mary Magdalene dé Pazzi

Acts 16:1-10, Psalm 100:1-3, 5, John 15:18-21

ARE YOU DOING YOUR JOBS?

"The congregations grew stronger in faith and daily increased in numbers." -Acts 16:5

The Lord insists that we bear abundant, lasting fruit (Jn 15:5, 16). Consequently, it is good to ask ourselves: "How many people have I tried to lead to a total commitment to the Lord through my love, service, witness, words, prayer, and fasting?" Another crucial question we should ask ourselves is: "How many Christians have I tried to lead into leadership in the Church?" For example, when St. Paul heard of Timothy's faith, he was eager to have Timothy go on mission and begin apprenticeship for leadership in the Church (Acts 16:3; cf 2 Tm 1:5).

The Lord holds each of us accountable to be, as it were, one of His vocation directors, leading Christians of all walks of life into leadership in the Church. However, we must first be a witness for Jesus (see Acts 1:8) and an evangelizer, for the essence of the Christian life and leadership is evangelistic. Pope St. Paul VI stated this succinctly: The Church "exists in order to evangelize" (On Evangelization in the Modern World, 14).

Be fruitful. Be an evangelizer. Be a vocation director. Be what the Lord wants you to be.

Prayer: Father, make me see the Christian life the way You want me to see it.

Promise: "I chose you out of the world." -Jn 15:19

Praise: Pope St. Gregory VII's last recorded words were: "I have loved justice and hated iniquity...therefore, I die in exile" (see Ps 101).

THE FRUIT OF LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 5/24/2019

Friday, May 24, 2019

Acts 15:22-31, Psalm 57:8-10, 12, John 15:12-17

THE FRUIT OF LOVE

"It was not you who chose Me, it was I Who chose you to go forth and bear fruit." -John 15:16

In the very first chapter of the Bible, we hear the Lord's first words to the newly created human race. He commanded us to bear fruit (Gn 1:28). We are chosen specifically for the purpose of bearing much fruit that will last (Jn 15:16, 5). Shortly before His Ascension, Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples of all nations, that is, to bear the fruit of holiness and evangelization (Mt 28:19). We will come to a tragic end unless we bear fruit (Lk 13:5-9), for we will be judged on whether we had the faith and love to obey His commands, particularly His command to bear fruit.

Because bearing fruit is so important, Jesus tries to make sure we bear fruit. He Himself will bear fruit through us. All we have to do is to remain in Him and He in us (Jn 15:5). A deep, abiding, personal relationship with Jesus always bears His fruit. A branch doesn't have to worry about bearing fruit. It just has to let the life of the Vine flow through it. Intimacy with Jesus is always fruitful. Abide in Him and He in you.

Prayer: Father, make my relationship with You so deep that it bears a hundredfold harvest (see Mk 4:20).

Promise: "When it was read there was great delight at the encouragement it gave." -Acts 15:31

Praise: Praying for holiness, Patricia thus began to see God in herself and others.

(Bear fruit by reading the Bible every day. We have several series to help you: "Overview of the Bible" is six CDs starting with CD 10A-1 or three DVDs starting with DVD 10A. "15-Minute Bible Teaching - New Testament" is forty CDs starting with CD 700. "An Introduction to Each Book of the Bible" is thirty-two CDs starting with CD 21-1 or seventeen DVDs starting with DVD 21.)

"WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS" - One Bread, One Body, 5/23/2019

Thursday, May 23, 2019

Acts 15:7-21, Psalm 96:1-3, 10, John 15:9-11

"WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS"

"As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you." -John 15:9

The love of the Father for the Son Jesus is immensely powerful. God's love for Jesus is explosive, powerful, creative, healing, regenerative, wild, unmeasurable, and beyond human control. Furthermore, Jesus loves each of us with that same love; He loves us "as the Father has loved" Him (Jn 15:9). If we truly experienced and realized how fully God loves us, we would be gloriously transformed. "For our God is a consuming fire" (Heb 12:29).

God's love has unfathomable power, like an avalanche that sweeps up all in its path and carries it all along. God, in His wondrous mercy, humbles Himself so that we might have the possibility to relate to His love. How else could we explain that the love of God, powerful enough to create a universe, could be contained in a small wafer of bread, the Holy Eucharist?

Receive His love. "Live in His love" (Jn 15:10).

Prayer: Father, may we come to "grasp fully...the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love" (Eph 3:18-19). Empower us to love those in our life with Your all-consuming love.

Promise: "All this I tell you that My joy may be yours and your joy may be complete." -Jn 15:11

Praise: Sheila is rendered speechless when before the Blessed Sacrament in Eucharistic Adoration.

FRUIT LOOPS - One Bread, One Body, 5/22/2019

Wednesday, May 22, 2019, St. Rita of Cascia

Acts 15:1-6, Psalm 122:1-5, John 15:1-8
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/052219.cfm

FRUIT LOOPS

"My Father has been glorified in your bearing much fruit." -John 15:8

We are God's branches, and we are to bear fruit for Him. Thus, the fruit we bear is not ours. For example, I have six children. All are adults, and five are married and live on their own. I had to let these five children go. They were my responsibility for two decades, and were ripening in my home under my care. Ultimately, however, these children belong to God, and they are His fruit.

Over and over, we branches repeat this cycle. We remain attached to Jesus, the Vine (Jn 15:1). We bear fruit, get pruned, sometimes painfully, and release the fruit to the Father when it is ripe. We repeat this cycle to bear "much fruit" for the Father-Vinegrower during our life (Jn 15:8).

A branch has two areas for openings, one that is attached to the Vine, and the other openings attached to the fruit. The opening attached to the Vine is designed to be a smooth, firm joint, never to be undone. The opening attached to the fruit is designed to hold the fruit tight until ripe, then to detach the fruit, so that disease enters neither fruit nor branch.

May we always release our fruit immediately to the Lord, for it is His. The branch does not exist for itself, but for the Vine and for bearing much fruit. Let us devote ourselves to Jesus completely, and focus on glorifying Him by bearing much fruit.

Prayer: Father, may I love the fruit You enable me to bear, but love You even more. I entrust You with the ripe fruit You have allowed me to bear. Use me as You wish. I am all Yours.

Promise: "Their story caused great joy among the brothers." -Acts 15:3

Praise: When St. Rita of Cascia lost both husband and sons, she devoted herself to her Bridegroom. She became a religious sister.

TOUGH LOVE

"We must undergo many trials if we are to enter the reign of God." -Acts 14:22

Being beaten with stones to the point of death for your faith in Jesus is most definitely a trial and a hardship. Yet getting back up and twice going back into the same town which tried to kill you gives your witness for Jesus a credibility which no one can deny (Acts 14:20, 21).

St. Paul's tough love was encouraging beyond measure. What tough love Paul displayed in heading right back into town and then right back out on mission. When someone who has been pelted with stones and judged to be dead tells you that you must undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God (Acts 14:19, 22), his witness gets received seriously!

We are tempted to fear such trials, pain, hardships, and persecution. Jesus, however, gives us His own peace amid hardships. He specifically commands us: "Do not be distressed or fearful" (Jn 14:27). Therefore, do not shy away from hardships for God's sake; they are your battle scars which give glory to God. They are the brand marks of Jesus on you (Gal 6:17).

When the going gets tough, the tough love to get going.

Prayer: Father, may I be so focused on the death and Resurrection of Jesus that I consider my own sufferings as trifles (Rm 8:18).

Promise: "They called the congregation together and related all that God had helped them accomplish, and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles." -Acts 14:27

Praise: St. Christopher Magallanes and his twenty-four companions were faithful unto death.

"AS YOU WISH"

"Anyone who loves Me will be true to My word." -John 14:23

We may think we love Jesus. So we look at a beautiful sunset, raise our voice to the heavens and say, "I love You, Jesus." But then we proceed to spend the rest of the night in behavior which offends the mercy and holiness of God. If we want to love someone, it is best not to make assumptions, but to learn from the beloved how they wish to be loved. Would such behavior be the way Jesus wishes to be loved?

It's best to learn from Jesus Himself how He wants to be loved. In today's Eucharistic readings, Jesus tells us clearly how He wants to be loved. If we obey the commands we have from Him, then we love Him (Jn 14:21). "Anyone who loves Me will be true to My word" (Jn 14:23). Thus, to love Him, we must spend the time it takes to truly know His Word. Otherwise, we may think we are loving Jesus but in effect we are repeatedly giving Him what He doesn't want.

There are many other ways in the Word of God in which the Lord tells us how He wishes to be loved and served (see Mt 20:25-26). Read His Word. Show Jesus that you love Him - in the manner He has revealed that He desires to be loved.

Prayer: Father, break through my pride to make me docile to the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "There was a man who was lame from birth; Paul looked directly at him and saw that he had the faith to be saved. He called out to him in a loud voice, 'Stand up! On your feet!' The man jumped up and began to walk around." -Acts 14:8-10

PM eNewsletter 5th Sunday of Easter

May 19th Fifth Sunday of Easter

Jesus, grace us to really pray.

We need to pray with a fervor that shakes the houses where we are at.

Please send forth the power of Your Holy Spirit to fill us with the desire to pray, so that we
will really do just that.

Many times people ask us to pray for a need and we say we will, but either forget to do it, or
do it with out any real conviction of purpose.

Jesus, open up our hearts and fill us with a real desire to communicate with You.

You, Christ, are the answer to all the questions and problems.

Teach us, Jesus.

Teach us.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday HARD LESSONS
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/19/2019

"We must undergo many trials." -Acts 14:22

At the close of the very first Christian missionary journey, Paul and Barnabas instructed their
disciples: "We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God" (Acts 14:22). Trials,
in fact, many trials, are a given for a disciple, although Jesus gives a yoke that is easy and a burden
that is light (Mt 11:30).

Life is hard. This is not the Lord's idea. He did not make original sin, "death or mourning, crying out
or pain" (Rv 21:4; see Wis 1:13). He will eventually abolish all these evils. By our sins, we have made
life hard, and the Lord has permitted this to continue.

By sin, we harden our hearts. Hard objects can be broken up by other harder objects (see Prv 27:17).
The Lord can use hard lives to break up and open up our hard hearts. So He lets us "learn the hard way"
so that we will repent (Mk 1:15), give our lives to Him, and not enter the everlasting hardness of hell.

"Oh, that today you would hear His voice: 'Harden not your hearts' " (Ps 95:7-8). Repent of any hardness
of heart and go to Confession. If your heart is so hard that you refuse to repent, may the hard life you
are making for yourself shatter the hardness of your heart.

Then if we open our hearts to the Lord, He will let us share in the hard sufferings of His cross
(see 1 Pt 4:13) so as to open the hardest hearts.

Prayer: Jesus, You gave us Mary to be our mother shortly before You died on the cross (Jn 19:26-27). Let
Mary teach me the hard facts and sublime joys of the cross.

Promise: "This is how all will know you for My disciples: your love for one another." -Jn 13:35

Praise: "Rejoice always." (1 Thes 5:16) "He has been raised up!" (Lk 24:6) Thank You, Jesus!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"EFFECTIVE HELP"

The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to
concrete action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

WE CAN DO IT

We do indeed have the adequate means and framework so that beautiful words and good wishes may become
an action plan of substance that leads effectively to the eradication of hunger in our world. To this
end we need joint efforts, upright hearts, and persistent concern to firmly and resolutely make the
other's problems one's own.

HARD LESSONS - One Bread, One Body, 5/19/2019

Sunday, May 19, 2019, Fifth Sunday of Easter

Acts 14:21-27, Revelation 21:1-5, Psalm 145:8-13, John 13:31-35
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/051919.cfm

HARD LESSONS

"We must undergo many trials." -Acts 14:22

At the close of the very first Christian missionary journey, Paul and Barnabas instructed their disciples: "We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God" (Acts 14:22). Trials, in fact, many trials, are a given for a disciple, although Jesus gives a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light (Mt 11:30).

Life is hard. This is not the Lord's idea. He did not make original sin, "death or mourning, crying out or pain" (Rv 21:4; see Wis 1:13). He will eventually abolish all these evils. By our sins, we have made life hard, and the Lord has permitted this to continue.

By sin, we harden our hearts. Hard objects can be broken up by other harder objects (see Prv 27:17). The Lord can use hard lives to break up and open up our hard hearts. So He lets us "learn the hard way" so that we will repent (Mk 1:15), give our lives to Him, and not enter the everlasting hardness of hell.

"Oh, that today you would hear His voice: 'Harden not your hearts' " (Ps 95:7-8). Repent of any hardness of heart and go to Confession. If your heart is so hard that you refuse to repent, may the hard life you are making for yourself shatter the hardness of your heart.

Then if we open our hearts to the Lord, He will let us share in the hard sufferings of His cross (see 1 Pt 4:13) so as to open the hardest hearts.

Prayer: Jesus, You gave us Mary to be our mother shortly before You died on the cross (Jn 19:26-27). Let Mary teach me the hard facts and sublime joys of the cross.

Promise: "This is how all will know you for My disciples: your love for one another." -Jn 13:35

Praise: "Rejoice always." (1 Thes 5:16) "He has been raised up!" (Lk 24:6) Thank You, Jesus!

BELIEVING OR BE LEAVING - One Bread, One Body, 5/18/2019

Saturday, May 18, 2019, Pope St. John I

Acts 13:44-52, Psalm 98:1-4, John 14:7-14
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/051819.cfm

BELIEVING OR BE LEAVING

"Believe Me." -John 14:11

Did you know that the word "believe" is used eighty-two times in the Gospel of John? Indeed, the very purpose of John's Gospel is that all who read it may "believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, so that through this" belief you may have eternal life in His name (Jn 20:31).

When a book or passage of Scripture uses the same word that many times, the Lord wants us to get the message. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus refers to believing in Him four times.

If we believe in Jesus and prove that belief by living a new life in Him, we will have eternal life with Him (Jn 6:47; 8:31; 20:31). If we refuse to believe in Him, we will die in our sins (Jn 8:24) and spend eternity separated from Jesus in hell.

John lists some reasons people refuse to believe in Jesus:

* not reading the Gospel or ignoring its message,
* not being willing to come to Jesus for help,
* a lack of love,
* the pride of preferring human approval to God's approval, and
* a refusal to believe Jesus' witnesses.

Jesus said, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the One the Father sent" (see Jn 6:29). Jesus implores us: "Believe Me" (Jn 14:11).

Prayer: Jesus, "I do believe. Help my" unbelief! (Mk 9:24)

Promise: "All who were destined for life everlasting believed in it. Thus the word of the Lord was carried throughout that area." -Acts 13:48-49

Praise: Pope St. John I suffered imprisonment for love of truth and unity, during which he ultimately died for his faith in Jesus.

SUBPOENAED AS A WITNESS - One Bread, One Body, 5/17/2019

Friday, May 17, 2019

Acts 13:26-33, Psalm 2:6-11, John 14:1-6

SUBPOENAED AS A WITNESS

"These are His witnesses now before the people." -Acts 13:31

Throughout Acts of the Apostles, the Lord repeatedly commands us to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8; 2:32; 3:15; 10:39; 13:31). Now that we are more than halfway through the Easter season, it is appropriate to ask ourselves whether we have obeyed the Lord's command to be His witnesses. Hopefully, we have done this throughout our Christian lives and even more intensely in this Easter season.

If you were subpoenaed as a witness by a human court, would you obey? If not, you would face contempt of court charges. Each Christian is subpoenaed daily and even more frequently to witness for Jesus. If we refuse to obey, we potentially face not contempt of court charges but contempt of God charges. We must obey and witness.

The Lord insists on this because He loves us so much that He died on the cross for us and He wants all to be saved by His death (see 1 Tm 2:4). To be saved, we must accept Jesus as our Savior, Lord, and God (see Jn 20:28). Those who have already done this are called to witness for Jesus and invite others to accept Jesus. Witnessing for Jesus is an essential part of God's plan. If we love Jesus and people, we must witness for Jesus.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me the power to witness for Jesus (Acts 1:8).

Promise: "No one comes to the Father but through Me." -Jn 14:6

Praise: Elizabeth witnessed to her family by word and deed after her own conversion.

JESUS IS GOD! JESUS IS GOD! JESUS IS GOD! - One Bread, One Body, 5/16/2019

JESUS IS GOD! JESUS IS GOD! JESUS IS GOD!

"Believe that I AM." -John 13:19

Jesus told His apostles that one of them would betray Him. Jesus explained His reason for doing this: "I tell you this now, before it takes place, so that when it takes place you may believe that I AM" (Jn 13:19). Jesus is working in our lives so that we will have an ever greater faith in Him as the great I AM, God Himself. It is of supreme importance that we believe in Jesus' divinity. Jesus bluntly stated: "You will surely die in your sins unless you come to believe that I AM" (Jn 8:24).

Because it is absolutely essential to profess Jesus as Lord and God (Rm 10:9; Jn 20:28), the devil tries to orchestrate circumstances and spin interpretations of these circumstances to leave us confused, doubtful about Jesus' divinity, or even angry with God for permitting tragic events. But the Lord pre-empts these demonic machinations by tipping us off ahead of time; the Lord knows the future and is in control of history - despite reports to the contrary. Jesus is the Lord God. He is forever enthroned on high and now waits for the last of His enemies to be placed beneath His feet (Heb 10:12-13).

Right now, you are in a war over your faith in Jesus' divinity. The greatest of all heresies, Arianism, is subtly attempting to ruin your faith in Jesus' divinity. Refuse to be robbed of your faith in the Lord Jesus. Proclaim ever more insistently: Jesus, "my Lord and my God!" (Jn 20:28)

Prayer: Father, give me a rock-solid, invincible faith in Jesus' divinity.

Promise: "I solemnly assure you, he who accepts anyone I send accepts Me, and in accepting Me accepts Him Who sent Me." -Jn 13:20

Praise: Charlie turned back to the Lord on the battlefield and never turned away again.

HOME RUN - One Bread, One Body, 5/15/2019

Wednesday, May 15, 2019, St. Isidore the Farmer

Acts 12:24-13:5, Psalm 67:2-3, 5-6, 8, John 12:44-50
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/051519.cfm

HOME RUN

"Barnabas and Saul.sent forth by the Holy Spirit.set sail from there for Cyprus." -Acts 13:2, 4

Barnabas was likely the leader for the Church's first missionary trip, as indicated by the fact that his name came before Saul's. Of all the possible destinations in a world without the Lord, the Holy Spirit sent Barnabas home, to Cyprus (Acts 13:4). Remember that Barnabas came "from Cyprus" (Acts 4:36). After evangelizing Cyprus, Barnabas and Saul evangelized numerous cities. Thus, with home serving as a launching pad, "the word of the Lord continued to spread and increase" (Acts 12:24).

Jesus once delivered a man from possession by demons. The man wanted to "accompany Him. Jesus did not grant his request, but told him instead: 'Go home to your family and make it clear to them how much the Lord in His mercy has done for you' " (Mk 5:18-19). He did this, but he then expanded his evangelization to the Ten Cities (Mk 5:20). With home as a launching pad, "the word of the Lord continued to spread and increase" (Acts 12:24).

Are you confused about your mission field? It could be that God is sending you home to start His mission for you. It may be easier to evangelize strangers than it is to share your witness with your brother, sister, or friend. Jesus understands that you may not be accepted at home (see Lk 4:24). Your witness could also cause division for a time at home (see Mt 10:34-36). Whether or not you succeed at home, with home as a launching pad, the word of the Lord will continue "to spread and increase" (Acts 12:24).

Prayer: Father, may I bear fruit where You plant me. May all in my home and my hometown come to know, love, and serve You.

Promise: "I have come to the world as its Light." -Jn 12:46

Praise: St. Isidore the Farmer was favored with miracles on earth and visions of heaven. He began each day with morning Mass. He and his wife are both canonized saints.
