Presentation Ministries - Special Appeal

Presentation Ministries

(NOTE: Many of you already received this letter by mail. Thank you for your generous response.)

November, 2009

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ:

Praise Jesus, the Prince of Peace! Thank you for your steadfastness in serving Christ in the midst of the trying circumstances around us. By reading and sharing God’s word in One Bread One Body, you are helping to build Christ’s Kingdom here on earth. In responding to our Special Appeal last fall and throughout the year, you have been a source of inspiration and encouragement to us as we strive to fulfill the far-reaching vision that the Holy Spirit gave to Father Al Lauer, our founder.

Our many ministries continue to increase and affect many lives as we offer God’s Word “even to the ends of the earth.” Your sacrificial donations, both large and small, make it possible for us have our materials available in the USA, foreign countries, and globally via the Internet. The Lord continues to use these resources to touch lives and change hearts. Progress has been slow as we made changes in the basic computer program that enables our ministry to send out our books and materials. The Gospel is also being proclaimed through radio broadcasts, the Bible telephone line, and the Guadalupe Bible College.

The annual Bible Institute was powerfully anointed by the Holy Spirit. The speakers, the teachers, the participants, and all who served were astonished at the way that the Holy Spirit continues to exceed all expectations. Please pray that this ministry can continue its good work even though the donations received did not meet our expenses this year.

The Paul Jansen Discipleship Retreat Center offers seminars that deepen one’s commitment to Christ. This ministry needs a large infusion of funds in order to complete the building project. When finished, the discipleship center will include a Chapel, meeting rooms, and residence rooms to accommodate about 80 participants. Work cannot go forward until sufficient funds are available to finish the job. Our original building permit has expired and in order to obtain a new permit, changes must be made to meet current codes. Please pray that God’s will and His timing will be perfect for this undertaking.

All of our teachers, editors, office personnel, mailing crews, and those who maintain the buildings – whether they give a few hours or work full time – are VOLUNTEERS. No one is paid. We retain the policy of providing our materials and resources, even the retreats and Bible Institute, for a free-will offering.

Every effort is made to control expenses and to find the most efficient way to respond to your requests. Since the cost of postage, shipping, and printing have greatly increased, our expenses have risen considerably while our donations have not. Please continue to pray for all of our needs. Pray especially for uninterrupted leadership for each of the ministries and for new committed workers. Any offering you can give now or in the future in support of our ministries enables us to continue our mission in serving the Lord and His Church. May the Lord bless you and all your loved ones in the coming holy seasons of Advent and Christmas.

SUCCESS STORIES

"As [Jesus] was walking along the Sea of Galilee He watched two brothers,
Simon now known as Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the
sea." —Matthew 4:18

St. Andrew is the first Apostle mentioned in John's Gospel (Jn 1:40). This
may be because he was also the first evangelist. He brought others to
Jesus, including Simon Peter, his brother, the Rock on which Jesus founded
the Church, and the preacher of the first Pentecost. Andrew also brought
to Jesus the boy with the five barley loaves and the two fish (Jn 6:8-9).
This set the stage for one of Jesus' greatest miracles, the multiplication
of the loaves and fish. Andrew was asked by Philip to bring some Greeks to
see Jesus (Jn 12:21-22). Philip may have been acknowledging Andrew's
reputation as someone exceptionally gifted in bringing people to Jesus.

Nonetheless, Andrew, who was from Bethsaida (Jn 1:44), did not bring many
from his hometown to Jesus. Jesus criticized the people of Bethsaida for
not repenting in response to the many miracles He had done in their midst
(Lk 10:13).

In summary, Andrew was successful in bringing people to Jesus. Andrew is
still bringing people to Jesus. He'll bring you to Jesus today. Will you
be another success story for Andrew?

Prayer: Father, as we begin this Advent, may I begin the most fruitful
time of evangelization in my life.

Promise: "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in
your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." —Rm 10:9

Praise: St. Andrew was used by God to bring a future pope to Jesus.

PM eNewsletter The first Sunday of Advent

November 29th The first Sunday of Advent

Here we are again, Jesus, into Christmas.

Please Lord, let this truly be a holy period, for us to prepare,
to herald Your birth.

Let us not get so wrapped up into presents, that we forget to
give You, the present of our love.

Let us see that in this amazing birth our eternal life factor was
now in play.

You came to give us all eternal life and You came to make
reparation for all of the sins that was ever or will be committed.

Let us be set on fire with love for You and the love You showed us.

Let us see You in others and be Christ to them, so that someday
we all may shine in heaven with You.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday PREGNANT AGAIN
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=11/29/2009

"In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just
Shoot." —Jeremiah 33:15

Happy new year! Today we celebrate the first day of the new
Church year and of Advent. Today, in a spiritual sense, we conceive
new life and prepare to give birth to that life in the Christmas
season. Advent is similar to pregnancy, in that we carry, protect,
and nurture Christ's new life within us. We must take care not to
do anything which might hurt the baby. Therefore, the Church
warns us: "Be on guard lest your spirits become bloated with
indulgence and drunkenness and worldly cares" (Lk 21:34). Just
as a mother's smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking drugs can have
bad effects on her baby, so our sinful preoccupation with "worldly
cares" can damage or even abort the new life of Advent.

We should begin this year and this spiritual pregnancy by going to
Confession. By repenting, we remove things which stifle the growth
of God's life within us. We should also simplify our lives, freeing up
more time to pray, read God's word, evangelize, and share
fellowship. We should be nourished and rested in our pregnancy.
TV, videos, and compulsive activities could very well smother our
new life in God. Advent, like pregnancy, is a wonderful time as long
as we carefully protect and nourish the new life within us.

Thankful to be Catholic

I am a Roman Catholic priest, a "cradle Catholic" who grew up
in an age of Catholic triumphalism. As children we were told to
play only with Catholics. Since Notre Dame football team won
almost all their games at that time, we believed that proved we
were better. As I grew older, got involved in a parish, and
eventually entered the seminary, I could see the Catholic
Church was definitely not perfect. But still I believed we were
the best. As I continued my studies for the priesthood and

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/BST/bst2009-08.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

LOVE AND TRUTH

LIBERATION POWER

Truth preserves and expresses charity's power to liberate
in the ever-changing events of history. (5)

"A GREAT CHALLENGE"

Love in truth ... is a great challenge for the Church in a world
that is becoming progressively and pervasively globalized. The
risk for our time is that the de facto interdependence of people
and nations is not matched by ethical interaction of
consciences and minds that would give rise to truly human
development. Only in charity, illumined by the light of reason
and faith, is it possible to pursue development goals that
possess of more humane and humanizing value. (9)

"PRINCIPAL DRIVING FORCE"

Charity in truth, to which Jesus Christ bore witness by His
earthly life and especially by His death and resurrection, is the
principal driving force behind the authentic development of
every person and of all humanity. (1)

PRAY-DAY, PRAY-DAY - One Bread, One Body, 11/28/2009

Daniel 7:15-27, Daniel 3:82-87, Luke 21:34-36

PRAY-DAY, PRAY-DAY

"Pray constantly for the strength to escape whatever is in prospect, and
to stand secure before the Son of Man." —Luke 21:36

The Lord already has commanded us to pray always, but today may be a day
of more intense prayer. A tremendous spiritual war is raging. Some
Christians are winning this war by giving up their lives for the gospel.
Others are so defeated they don't even know a war is going on. Their
spirits have "become bloated with indulgence and drunkenness and worldly
cares" (Lk 21:34). Still others are neither winning nor losing; they are
in the middle of the fight of their lives, for their lives. Many of these
Christians are resisting sin to the point of shedding their blood (Heb
12:4). The Lord calls us to join them in the struggle by our prayers on
their behalf (Rm 15:30). Our brothers and sisters in the Lord are crying:
"Pray for us that the word of the Lord may make progress and be hailed by
many others, even as it has been by you. Pray that we may be delivered
from confused and evil men" (2 Thes 3:1-2). Therefore, "at every
opportunity pray in the Spirit, using prayers and petitions of every sort.
Pray constantly and attentively for all in the holy company" (Eph 6:18).

At the beginning of his papacy, Pope John Paul II exhorted us: "We feel
not only the need but even a categorical imperative for great, intense and
growing prayer by all the Church. Only prayer can prevent all these great
succeeding tasks and difficulties from becoming a source of crisis" (The
Redeemer of Man, 22, emphasis added).

On this last day in the Church's year, the Lord wants to complete His
works, transform His people, forgive our sins, restore broken
relationships, and more. For this to be done, there is "the necessity of
praying always and not losing heart" (Lk 18:1).

Prayer: Father, may this be a day of exceptional conversions and mighty
wonders.

Promise: "All dominions shall serve and obey Him." —Dn 7:27

Praise: Come, Lord Jesus! Maranatha!

LITTLE BIG HORN - One Bread, One Body, 11/27/2009

Friday, November 27, 2009

Daniel 7:2-14, Daniel 3:75-81, Luke 21:29-33
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/112709.shtml

LITTLE BIG HORN

"This horn had eyes like a man, and a mouth that spoke
arrogantly." —Daniel 7:8

In Daniel's vision, the horn that sprang from the fourth beast was the
Seleucid kingdom (Dn 7:8). The big mouth of the little horn was King
Antiochus Epiphanes. This man was so arrogant (see Dn 7:11) that, after a
reign of mass murder, terror, and torture (see 1 Mc 1:54-63), he remarked
about what a nice guy he was (1 Mc 6:12).

King Antiochus would feel at home with us today, for arrogance is rampant
in our society. It is not unusual for a minister or priest to flippantly
contradict the Bible and thousands of years of Spirit-filled people to
justify artificial contraception, homosexual activity, or abortion.
Professors, seminarians, and amateur theologians think nothing of ignoring
the Pope's teachings and dismissing him as a chauvinistic, authoritarian
relic. Too many Catholics turn up their noses at Jesus in Holy Communion.
They don't have time to receive the body and blood of Jesus, except maybe
on Sundays. Jesus doesn't fit into their weekday schedule. Are we mocking
God? (see Gal 6:7)

The Lord's judgment on our arrogance is: "All you can do is make arrogant
and pretentious claims. All such boasting is reprehensible" (Jas 4:16).
"The haughty eyes of man will be lowered, the arrogance of men will be
abased, and the Lord alone will be exalted, on that day. For the Lord of
hosts will have His day against all that is proud and arrogant, all that
is high, and it will be brought low" (Is 2:11-12). "God 'is stern with the
arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness' " (1 Pt 5:5; Prv 3:34).
Repent of arrogance and submit to God's word, His Church, and the pope.

Prayer: Father, may I shut my big mouth.

Promise: "The heavens and the earth will pass away, but My words will not
pass." —Lk 21:33

Praise: Once Paula got into reading the pope's teachings, she began to
really understand her faith.

David knew how to repent

Source: Michael Youssef

King David was a champion for God but he did not live a Teflon lifestyle.
The problems, difficulties, and sorrows of life did not slide past him. He
lived a difficult, tragic, and lonely life. His was a life of brokenness.
Great men and women of God are not great because they escape their problems.
They are great because they know how to go to God with their problems in
brokenness.

The Bible doesn't sanitize its characters before presenting them to us. They
are presented with all of their sin and uncertainty. This is why we are
given the brutal truth about David and his life - his sinfulness, his
blindness, and the consequences of his sin. Time and again, God forgave
David, but He didn't overrule the consequences of David's sin.

In many ways, the Bible's 66 chapters about David would make for a wild
Hollywood soap opera. Everything is there - murder, adultery, incest.
However, there is a difference between David's true-life drama in the Word
of God and a Hollywood soap opera. The Bible reveals to us the wages of sin
while Hollywood sanitizes, glamorizes, and sugarcoats the consequences of
sin.

Ignoring God's will may be accompanied by successes in the beginning but
give this behavior some time, and the wages of sin will become clear. As the
heart hardens, no sermon, no preacher, no friend, and no church will be able
to get through to that person until the Spirit of God breaks them.

David thought that he had gotten away with his sexual sin with Bathsheba. He
didn't understand that God's justice may take a long time but it will always
come. The law of God was clear and the punishment for adultery in the Old
Testament was stoning. Both the adulterer and the adulteress were to be
stoned to death. David tried to escape the law by arranging for Bathsheba's
husband, Uriah, to be killed.

Months passed and everyone forgot about the sin except for God. Through the
prophet Nathan, God brought David under conviction and his response was, "I
sinned before God." His response is an indication of the sorrow and grief he
had over his sin. Every verse of Psalm 51 shows us the depth of his anguish
and the reality of his repentance.

David's repentance is the only true and biblical kind of repentance. It was
genuine because it was accompanied by a desire to forsake his sin. The
consequence of his sin was grave - the death of his son. Still, God forgave
David just as He will forgive us when we come to Him in repentance.

From cover-to-cover, the Bible gives examples of great men and women of God
who exercised genuine repentance - in both word and in deed. Sin is
deceptive and its wages are death. God honors true repentance and gives life
to those who are broken before Him. Today you can ask the Lord to "Restore
unto me the joy my salvation" (Psalm 51:12).

EATING DISORDERS

"The king...refused to eat." —Daniel 6:19

On this Thanksgiving Day in the USA, a day of great feasting, the Church
reads to us about not eating. King Darius couldn't eat out of concern for
the doomed Daniel (Dn 6:19). The hungry lions couldn't eat, since God was
protecting Daniel (Dn 6:23).

This physical inability to eat has its counterpart in the spiritual life.
Spiritually anorexic people won't eat the spiritual food they need. They
have so stuffed themselves with the things of the world that they fail to
realize that their souls are starving to death for lack of nourishment
(see Prv 13:19).

To remedy our eating disorders, God gives us the Eucharist, Food from
heaven (Jn 6:31-32, 35). The word eucharist means "thanksgiving." In the
Eucharist, the Body of Christ, God connects giving thanks and eating. This
is why for centuries Christians have given thanks to God before meals.

Many of you are eating a big meal today. Hopefully, that meal will include
heartfelt public thanks to God for all His blessings. As good as such a
meal is, the ultimate Thanksgiving meal is the Mass, and the ultimate
"thanksgiving" meal is the Eucharist (see Jn 6:11). Food and thanksgiving
go together to such an extent that God combined them in the eucharistic
body of Jesus. Happy are they who eat thankfully at the banquet of the
Lamb (Rv 19:9).

Prayer: "I will give thanks to You, O Lord, with all my heart" (Ps 138:1)
by frequently receiving You at Mass (Ps 116:12-13).

Promise: "When these things begin to happen, stand erect and hold your
heads high, for your deliverance is near at hand." —Lk 21:28

Praise: Until he returned to the Church, Peter hadn't realized how
malnourished his soul had been.

"LAST SUPPER"

"King Belshazzar gave a great banquet." —Daniel 5:1

King Belshazzar gave a last supper for his friends (Dn 5:1). This banquet
featured revelry, blasphemy, idolatry (Dn 5:4), insolence, pride (Dn
5:20), terror (Dn 5:9), betrayal (Dn 5:30), and finally, the death of the
host (Dn 5:30).

King Jesus also gave a Last Supper for His friends (Lk 22:8ff). Like
Belshazzar's banquet, this Last Supper also featured betrayal (Lk 22:21)
and the death of the Host (Mt 26:31ff). However, Jesus' Last Supper
featured selfless love (Lk 22:15), humble service (Jn 13:4ff), the Bread
of Life, a new covenant in Jesus' blood (Lk 22:17-20), and praise of God
(Mt 26:30).

Many of you in the USA will take part in a "great banquet" tomorrow at
your Thanksgiving dinner. Like Belshazzar's last supper, some of these
banquets may feature drunkenness, betrayal, pride, and even blasphemy. You
may be ridiculed by members of your family (Lk 21:16), and even put "to
trial" in some family conversations (Lk 21:12). Jesus, the Lord of
banquets, says: "I bid you resolve not to worry about your defense
beforehand, for I will give you words and a wisdom which none of your
adversaries can take exception to or contradict" (Lk 21:14-15).

Prepare for tomorrow's banquet with today's Last Supper. Go to Mass today,
tomorrow, and every day if possible. Receive the Eucharist, a word meaning
"thanksgiving." Then your "Thanksgiving" dinner will be like Jesus' Last
Supper, not Belshazzar's.

Prayer: Father, may I be worthy of persecution for Your name.

Promise: "By patient endurance you will save your lives." —Lk 21:19

Praise: St. Catherine was put to death for her faith along with hundreds
of her converts.

Daniel 2:31-45, Daniel 3:57-61, Luke 21:5-11
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/112409.shtml

THE LAST STAND

"The stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the
whole earth." —Daniel 2:35

The writer of Daniel surveyed four hundred years of world history and saw
it as a series of breakdowns. Empire after empire, dynasty after dynasty
had collapsed. Jesus accurately prophesied a similar end for the great
Temple in Jerusalem. He claimed: "The day will come when not one stone
will be left on another, but it will all be torn down" (Lk 21:6).

Our world and our bodies deteriorate. Yet, "we do not lose heart, because
our inner being is renewed each day even though our body is being
destroyed at the same time" (2 Cor 4:16). "We do not fix our gaze on what
is seen but on what is unseen. What is seen is transitory; what is unseen
lasts forever. Indeed, we know that when the earthly tent in which we
dwell is destroyed we have a dwelling provided for us by God, a dwelling
in the heavens, not made by hands but to last forever" (2 Cor 4:18—5:1).

We look forward to the future. Every day we are being spiritually built
into "a holy temple in the Lord" (Eph 2:21), while world empires and other
temples, even our bodies, are being destroyed. Finally, the "edifice of
spirit" (1 Pt 2:5) that we are becoming will be completed. Then everything
else will fall apart, the world will end, and Jesus will return for "a
glorious church, holy and immaculate, without stain or wrinkle or anything
of that sort" (Eph 5:27). We will be the only thing left standing because
our Cornerstone and Foundation is the Rock Jesus (Ps 118:22; 1 Cor 3:11;
Dn 2:44-45).

Prayer: Father, enable me to stand erect, hold my head high, and praise
You when I see my world falling apart.

Promise: "The great God has revealed to the king what shall be in the
future; this is exactly what you dreamed, and its meaning is sure." —Dn
2:45

Praise: St. Andrew Dung-Lac would not renounce Jesus Christ. He and his
116 companions gave their lives as martyrs.

KOSHER - One Bread, One Body, 11/23/2009

Daniel 1:1-6, 8-20, Daniel 3:52-56, Luke 21:1-4
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/112309.shtml

KOSHER

"Please test your servants for ten days. Give us vegetables to eat and
water to drink. Then see how we look in comparison with the other young
men who eat from the royal table." —Daniel 1:12-13

The Jewish people believed that eating only kosher foods was an extremely
important part of their covenant with the Lord. This was so important that
many Jews died rather than eat unclean food (see 2 Mc 6-7). Consequently,
while in exile, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah insisted on a
vegetarian diet. This would assure them of eating kosher food.

In the new covenant, Jesus has made "all foods clean" (Mk 7:19). "Nothing
is to be rejected when it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made
holy by God's word and by prayer" (1 Tm 4:4-5). So we need not obey kosher
food laws. However, the new covenant does not abolish the commands of the
old, but fulfills them (Mt 5:17). In the new covenant, the emphasis is not
so much on the kinds of food we eat, but on the lordship of Jesus. Lord
Jesus will not only tell us what to eat, but how much, when, where, why,
and how to eat. Jesus may tell us to fast or eat with the poor (Lk 14:13).
He may command us to eat with family, not the TV; in thanksgiving, not
compulsion; at home, not the drive-through.

We want Jesus to be the Lord of our eating because by obeying His commands
we express our love for Him. Jesus said: "You will live in My love if you
keep My commandments" (Jn 15:10), including His commandments about eating.

Prayer: Father, may everything in my life be kosher with Jesus.

Promise: "They make contributions out of their surplus, but she from her
want has given what she could not afford — every penny she had to live
on." —Lk 21:4

Praise: Pope St. Clement started as a Jewish Roman and ended as a
Christian martyr.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE GOVERNMENT OF GOD
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=11/22/2009

"His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be
taken away, His kingship shall not be destroyed." —Daniel 7:14

In heaven, the form of government in which we shall live
eternally will not be a democracy, socialism, a Communist
regime, or that of a tyrannical dictator. The kingdom of
heaven is a blend of a monarchy and a benevolent
dictatorship. Jesus is King, that is, a Monarch, and He is a
benevolent and sovereign Lord. We who believe in King
Jesus will spend eternity with a blessed Ruler (1 Tm 6:15)
Who loves us beyond measure.

Even those who have lived in a worldly monarchy or
benevolent dictatorship will hardly be able to relate to the
heavenly kingdom, for no one has even begun to imagine
what our Ruler has in store for us (1 Cor 2:9). Earthly kings
might be so lavish as to throw a seven-day party (Est 1:5);
King Jesus gives an eternal wedding feast (Rv 19:9). Earthly
rulers put to death those who try to kill them (Est A:13-14);
Lord Jesus dies for us as we kill Him (Catechism, 598). Only
a few people are allowed access to earthly rulers; everyone
has access to King Jesus (Eph 2:18; Mt 11:28; Jn 6:37).
Earthly rulers lord their authority over their subjects (Mt 20:25);
Lord Jesus comes to serve His subjects and lay down His life
out of love for us (Mt 20:28; Lk 22:27; Jn 10:15; 13:5).

Many in our secular world choose to serve gods of sex, money,
power, greed, ambition, status, or wanton pleasure-seeking.
Others are imprisoned under the rule of the harsh dictatorship
of addiction, compulsion, abuse. "Decide today whom you will
serve" (Jos 24:15). Give your life to Jesus, your King and Lord.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/BST/bst2009-08.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

LOVE AND TRUTH

"AT THE HEART"

Charity is at the heart of the Church's social doctrine. Every
responsibility and every commitment spelt out by that
doctrine is derived from charity which, according to the
teachings of Jesus, is the synthesis of the entire law. (cf. Mt 22:36-40)
(2)

TRUTH AND CHARITY

Truth needs to be sought, found, and expressed within the
"economy" of charity, but charity in its turn needs to be
understood, confirmed and practiced in the light of truth In
this way, ...we do service to charity, enlightened by truth,
but we also help give credibility to truth, demonstrating its
persuasive and authenticating power in the practical setting
of social living. (2)

"MEANING AND VALUE"

Only in truth does charity shine forth, only in truth can charity
be authentically lived. Truth is the light that gives meaning
and value to charity. (3)

FULL HOUSE

"My house is meant for a house of prayer." —Luke 19:46

In today's first reading, the leaders and the people rededicated the house
of God, the Temple, with a spirit of holiness and joy. God's house was
filled with prayer and rejoicing (1 Mc 4:36ff). First, however, they had
to empty it of unholiness (1 Mc 4:43ff). A mere two centuries later, the
people of God, and particularly their leaders, treat the house of God not
much differently than the marketplace which surrounds it. God's house and
its environs are full of commerce and busy-ness. Jesus had to empty the
Temple of merchants and animals and fill it with teaching and prayer (Lk
19:45ff).

Most of us belong to parishes with a church building less than two
centuries old. When first constructed, these church buildings were
dedicated and blessed, undoubtedly with joy and a measure of holiness.
Years after the dedication, how do our churches compare with the Temple of
Jesus' time? Have we filled the house of God with unholiness, busy-ness,
and commerce, either through the hearts of the people or the actions of
the leaders? Do we still treat the house of God, the church building where
Jesus dwells in the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament, as a place of
prayer? Have we fallen from our first love? (Rv 2:4) After beginning in
the Spirit, will the people of our church end at the level of the flesh?
(Gal 3:3)

Jesus wants His house to be full of prayer (Lk 14:23). Repent of any
behavior or attitude which fosters the decline of prayer in church, and
lead the way in filling the house of God with prayer.

Prayer: Father, I rededicate myself completely to You.

Promise: "The entire populace was listening to Him and hanging on His
words." —Lk 19:48

Praise: Maria arranged for weekly adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in
her parish.

APOSTASY?

"The officers of the king in charge of enforcing the apostasy came to the
city of Modein." —1 Maccabees 2:15

King Antiochus Epiphanes sent officers to enforce an apostasy. Almost all
the Gentiles and even Jews forsook the religions of their fathers and
consented to the king's orders (1 Mc 2:19). However, Mattathias, his
family, and some others refused to depart from their "religion in the
slightest degree" (1 Mc 2:22). Therefore, they were forced to flee to the
mountains and leave behind all their possessions (1 Mc 1:28-29).

We also may be tempted to give up our faith. We may even be living during
the mass apostasy, which will occur at the end of the world (2 Thes 2:3).
To keep the faith as Mattathias and his followers did, we must be firmly
founded on Jesus the Rock (see 1 Cor 3:11) by totally committing our lives
to Him. We also need to be confirmed in our faith by the Holy Spirit.
Moreover, we must come under the authority of the Church and especially of
the pope. Finally, we should be sharing our faith. If we are giving our
faith away, we will be able to keep it no matter what temptations and
pressures we face.

Does Jesus see in you a faith that will fold or one that will stand? When
He looks at you, do you bring a smile to His face or tears to His eyes?
(see Lk 19:41)

Prayer: Father, give me the strength and courage to be persecuted and die
for love of You.

Promise: "Let everyone who is zealous for the law and who stands by the
covenant follow after me!" —1 Mc 2:27

Praise: By frequent prayer and sacraments Mary strives for holiness.

YOUR LIFESAVING INVESTMENT

"Invest this." —Luke 19:13

In Matthew's version of the parable of the sums of money, the master
lavishly praises his servants and invites them to share in his joy (Mt
25:21, 23). However in Luke's account, the master is demanding, severe,
and unwilling to act with patience toward his servants, much as we would
act toward an investment broker to whom we had entrusted thousands of
dollars.

One message of this passage is that God expects performance from us. He
invested the precious gift of life within us. Then He invested spiritual
gifts and natural talents in us. Though He created us out of sheer love,
He also expects a lasting return from us (Jn 15:16) and commands us to
"invest" our lives in His service until He returns (Lk 19:13). In fact,
the context of this parable in Luke's Gospel is Jesus' entry into
Jerusalem (Lk 19:28): it's the time of visitation (Lk 19:44) and settling
accounts (Lk 19:15; 20:10).

Investing our "all" is not an optional extra in the Christian life. It's a
matter of life and death. The servant who did not invest his life for
Jesus was judged as "worthless" (Lk 19:22) and was cast out into hell (Mt
25:30).

Are you holding back on giving anything in your life to Jesus? Jesus is
"coming soon" (Rv 22:20). The day of visitation may be sooner than you
think. "Why delay, then?" (Acts 22:16) Give your all to Jesus. Lay down
your life in total service to Him now.

Prayer: Father, I "disregard" myself for Your sake (2 Mc 7:23). I am all
Yours. Use me and use me up.

Promise: "I in justice shall behold Your face; on waking, I shall be
content in Your presence." —Ps 17:15

Praise: "Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, He Who in
His great mercy gave us new birth" (1 Pt 1:3).

PLANNING TO DIE

"By manfully giving up my life now, I will prove myself worthy of my old
age, and I will leave to the young a noble example of how to die willingly
and generously for the revered and holy laws." —2 Maccabees 6:27-28

Today it is fashionable to plan ahead for old age and death. Many have
already bought their burial plots, prearranged their funerals, and made
their wills. The Lord wants us to plan ahead for old age and death.
However, He's not so concerned about the economic and medical plans as He
is about the spiritual ones.

Most people plan to live a long time and die painlessly surrounded by the
comforts of home. However, it doesn't matter how long we live as much as
for Whom we live, that is, for the Lord. It doesn't matter if we die at
home, in a nursing home, or even on the street, as long as we die in the
Lord (see 1 Thes 4:16). Whether or not we are in pain isn't the most
important aspect of our death. For instance, Eleazar suffered terrible
pain, being tortured, scourged, and beaten to death. Nonetheless,
Eleazar's death was a "happy death" pleasing to the Lord because he left
"in his death a model of courage and an unforgettable example of virtue
not only for the young but for the whole nation" (2 Mc 6:31).

Plan to live your life and your old age in the Lord, to suffer and die in
the Lord. Plan to use your death as a forum for proclaiming Jesus as the
Lord of life and the Resurrection from the dead.

Prayer: Father, may my death lead hundreds, even thousands, to give their
lives to Jesus.

Promise: "Today salvation has come to this house." —Lk 19:9

Praise: St. Elizabeth never knew old age, in that she died caring for the
sick at age 24. While queen of Hungary, she built a hospital at the foot
of her castle.

THREE BLIND MEN

"A blind man sat at the side of the road begging." —Luke 18:35

Luke put his account of Jesus healing the blind man between the accounts
of the young rich man and Zacchaeus. He implies all three were blind. The
blind man was physically blind, while the young rich man and Zacchaeus
were spiritually blind. All three blind men had the opportunity to be
healed, but the young rich man refused to let Jesus open his eyes while
the other two accepted healing.

The young rich man decided to stay spiritually blind because he wouldn't
obey doctor's orders. When Doctor Jesus told him to sell all he had and
give the money to the poor, he disobeyed (Lk 18:22). However, when
Zacchaeus met Jesus, he "said to the Lord: 'I give half my belongings,
Lord, to the poor. If I have defrauded anyone in the least, I pay him back
fourfold' " (Lk 19:8).

Jesus came to open the eyes of the blind (Lk 4:18). He asks us: "What do
you want Me to do for you?" (Lk 18:41) We should respond: "I want to see"
(Lk 18:41). If we back up our statement by obeying the Lord, He will open
our eyes spiritually. We will be convicted of sin, change our lifestyle
dramatically, and begin to follow Jesus (Lk 18:43). All the people will
witness this and they too will give praise to God (Lk 18:43).

Prayer: Father, open my eyes, even if I have to suffer to be healed.

Promise: "Many in Israel were determined and resolved in their hearts not
to eat anything unclean; they preferred to die." —1 Mc 1:62-63

Praise: St. Gertrude became a saint who had a special devotion to the
Eucharist. After Jesus appeared to her in a vision, she only read the
Bible and the works of the Church fathers. She received many revelations
from the Lord and wrote them down to build up the body of Christ.

PM eNewsletter 33rd Sunday in ordinary time

November 15th 33rd Sunday in ordinary time

This week, Oh! Christ, Your church celebrates the "Presentation
of Mary".

Let us see in this feast that Your plan of our redemption was
unfolding in a very simple yet concise way.

Mary, our mother, the "new ark of the covenant" was brought to
God so as to be sealed in His love.

Mary, our mother, was always and still is, full of grace, and her
intercession is very powerful, for all of us.

We have a loving, caring mother who loves us and prays for us all.

Jesus, give us the grace to realize Your love, and the means
we can use to get the help we need to reach Your kingdom in
heaven, some day, thank You Jesus.

Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday MAKING ENDS MEET
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=11/15/2009

"It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations
began until that time. At that time your people shall escape,
everyone who is found written in the book." —Daniel 12:1

The end of the Church year reminds us of the end of the
world. "It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since
nations began until that time" (Dn 12:1). "Men will die of
fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the earth"
(Lk 21:26). "Indeed, had the Lord not shortened the period,
not a person would be saved. But for the sake of those He
has chosen, He has shortened the days" (Mk 13:20). "False
messiahs and false prophets will appear performing signs
and wonders to mislead, if it were possible, even the
chosen. So be constantly on guard!" (Mk 13:22-23)

The Lord tells us to "stand erect" and hold our heads high
(Lk 21:28) when the world ends. The way to have this
confidence is to live for the Lord right now. If we end this
year totally committed to the Lord, totally forgiven of sin,
and totally forgiving of others, we can have confidence that
we will be right with God at the world's end. If the world
were to end today, what would you do? Saint Francis of
Assisi had the right answer when he said: "I'd do what I'm
doing now." Obeying the Lord is our only security for the
future and the only security we need.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/BST/bst2009-08.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

LOVE AND TRUTH

"PRINCIPAL DRIVING FORCE"

Charity in truth, to which Jesus Christ bore witness by His
earthly life and especially by His death and resurrection, is
the principal driving force behind the authentic development
of every person and of all humanity. (1)

"TRUE LIFE"

The search for love and truth is purified and liberated by
Jesus Christ from the impoverishment that our humanity
brings to it, and He reveals to us in all its fullness the
initiative of love and the plan for true life that God has
prepared for us. (1)

JESUS IS THE TRUTH

In Christ, charity in truth becomes the Face of His Person,
a vocation to love our brothers and sisters in the truth of
His plan. Indeed, He Himself is the Truth... (1)
