PRACTICE THE PRESENCE OF THE MASTER (Part 2)

" 'Master, Master!' they cried. 'Open the door for us.' But He answered, 'I tell you, I do not know you.' " -Matthew 25:12

During our life on earth, we can prepare for hell by living a "hell on earth." We simply live a lifestyle we know would be displeasing to Jesus. Since we presume He's not present, what's to stop us from living as we please? Before long, we've run the risk of sliding so far away from Jesus that even if we did recognize His presence, we might not be able to change our lifestyle. We're far enough down the road to hell, an eternal future without the presence of Jesus (Catechism, 1033, 1035), that the Good News is unacceptable to us (see 1 Cor 1:18).
Alternatively, we can prepare for heaven by living a "heaven on earth," that is, a life lived constantly in the presence of Jesus. Every breath we take, each step we make, every moment we act in constant awareness that the Master is present. We act differently because we know He is present. We long for His presence more than the deer longs for running waters (Ps 42:2). Our hearts are restless until they rest in His presence (Catechism, 30). We change our lifestyle and do whatever it takes to have more time in His presence. Eucharistic adoration, frequent Mass, service to the suffering (Mt 25:35ff), Scripture reading, prayer, praise (Ps 22:3, JB), working for justice are ways to remain in the Master's presence and thereby keep our lamps full of the oil of the Spirit.
Our life on earth and eternal future are centered around the presence of Jesus. "Why delay, then?" (Acts 22:16). Live "resolutely in the presence of the Lord," and continue "to grow strong" (2 Chr 27:6).

Prayer: Master, I would rather suffer deprivation and enjoy Your presence than have luxury without You (see Ps 84:11).

Promise: "The plan of the Lord stands forever." -Ps 33:11

Praise: "Exult, you just, in the Lord; praise from the upright is fitting" (Ps 33:1).

PRACTICE THE PRESENCE OF THE MASTER (Part 1)

"Happy that servant whom his Master discovers at work on His return!" -Matthew 24:46

The key to being a watchful steward is the ongoing relationship with the Master. When the Master is present, it's obviously easier for a steward to be vigilant, with eyes focused on the Master, ready to act on His every wish (see Ps 123:2).
When it's not obvious to us that our Master is present, we are tempted to be sinful, disobedient, self-centered stewards. To give in to this temptation puts us, Jesus' stewards, in jeopardy of being punished severely (Mt 24:51). Jesus is always with us (Mt 1:23; 28:20), yet we often are unaware of His presence. Thus, we must constantly cultivate a sense of the Master's presence. Some ways to practice the presence of the Master are:
* Receive the eucharistic Jesus in Mass, daily if possible. His Real Presence in the Eucharist is His presence "par excellence" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 11, Pope John Paul II).
* Read the Scriptures daily. Jesus is alive and present in His Word (Jn 1:14; Heb 4:12).
* In community prayer, the Master promises that He is present with us (Mt 18:20).
* The Master's very name, Emmanuel, "a name which means 'God with us' " (Mt 1:23; 28:20), proclaims His constant presence with us. Pray by speaking the name of Jesus.

Even Jesus' faithful servants fail to recognize Him (see Mt 25:40-46). Therefore, constantly practice the presence of the Master.

Prayer: Jesus, may I "be ready to greet" You every moment.

Promise: "He will strengthen you till the end." -1 Cor 1:8

Praise: "Great is the Lord and highly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable" (Ps 145:3).

REACT OR ACT? - One Bread, One Body, 8/29/2012

Wednesday, August 29, 2012, Martyrdom of, St. John the Baptizer

Jeremiah 1:17-19, Psalm 71:1-6, 15, 17, Mark 6:17-29
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082912.cfm

REACT OR ACT?

"Be not crushed on their account, as though I would leave you crushed before them." -Jeremiah 1:17

Often we feel paralyzed by fear. Many people, for instance, may have been called to tell Herod: "It is not right for you to live with your brother's wife" (Mk 6:18), but were afraid and therefore spiritually paralyzed. We hear of only John the Baptizer calling Herod and Herodias to repent.
Often we feel paralyzed by trauma. After Jesus heard of John's brutal death, He naturally didn't want to do anything except get away for a while (see Mt 14:13). However, the crowds followed Jesus. "When He disembarked and saw the vast throng, His heart was moved with pity, and He cured their sick" (Mt 14:14). Few would have reached out to heal others when they were hurting so badly themselves, but Jesus refused to be paralyzed by the trauma of Herod's murder of John.
Does anything in your life shut you up when you're called to "speak the truth in love" (Eph 4:15, our transl.)? Does anything shut you down when you should be taking bold initiatives in evangelization and ministry? By God's grace, don't let fear, trauma, or even Satan keep you from doing His will. The Lord commands: "Stand up and tell them all that I command you" (Jer 1:17). The Lord promises: "They will fight against you, but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you" (Jer 1:19). Stand, speak, walk, run, live, die, rise.

Prayer: Father, make me an activist in Your sense of the word.

Promise: "My mouth shall declare Your justice, day by day Your salvation." -Ps 71:15

Praise: Heedless of the consequences he might endure, St. John the Baptizer fearlessly spoke the truth even to the king who would not hear it.

AN INSIDE JOB - One Bread, One Body, 8/28/2012

Tuesday, August 28, 2012, St. Augustine

2 Thessalonians 2:1-3, 14-17, Psalm 96:10-13, Matthew 23:23-26
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082812.cfm

AN INSIDE JOB

"You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, and leave the inside filled with loot and lust!" -Matthew 23:25

The religious leaders of Jesus' time were more interested in exterior than interior cleanness. Likewise, today we are more interested in baths, showers, dry cleaners, dishwashers, washing machines, mouthwashes, shampoos, toothpastes, dental floss, disinfectants, clean air, clean water, street cleaners, etc. than we are interested in the interior cleaning from our sins by means of repentance, Confession, prayer, and penance.
We have things backwards, for interior cleanness is much more important than exterior cleanness. Without interior cleanness, we will lose perspective on reality (see Mt 23:23-24), gradually go spiritually blind (see 2 Cor 4:4), be enslaved (Jn 8:34), and become spiritually paralyzed (see Mk 2:3, 5). Unless we let the Lord cleanse us interiorly, we will apostatize (see 2 Thes 2:3), deprive ourselves of the saving value of Jesus' death (1 Cor 1:17), "surely die" in our sins (Jn 8:21, 24), and go to hell forever.
God has provided for us "a fountain to purify from sin and uncleanness" (Zec 13:1). Go to Confession as soon as possible and pray: "A clean heart create for me, O God" (Ps 51:12). "Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me" (Ps 51:4).

Prayer: Father, make me pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3).

Promise: "Therefore, brothers, stand firm. Hold fast to the traditions you received from us, either by our word or by letter." -2 Thes 2:15

Praise: St. Augustine discovered the worthlessness of the earthly and the true worth of the heavenly. He wrote: "See what I was in myself and by myself. I had destroyed myself, but He Who made me remade me."

(For related teaching, order our booklet, The Bible on Sex, "or our tapes on "Sexual Purity", on audio RA 323 and RA 392.)

FOLLOW THE LEADER - One Bread, One Body, 8/27/2012

Monday, August 27, 2012, St. Monica

2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 11-12, Psalm 96:1-5, Matthew 23:13-22
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082712.cfm

FOLLOW THE LEADER

"Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you frauds! You shut the doors of the kingdom of God in men's faces, neither entering yourselves nor admitting those who are trying to enter." -Matthew 23:13

Jesus sharply criticized the religious leadership of His time. He called many of the leaders hypocrites, who were foolish and blind (Mt 23:16, 17). He accused some of them of making their followers into devils twice as wicked as themselves (Mt 23:15).
Jesus is so strict and harsh with leaders because their bad leadership is so destructive. Jesus loves us so much that He doesn't want us misled. Jesus protects His people by calling leaders to give an account of their leadership (Heb 13:17) - a stricter account (see Jas 3:1; Wis 6:5, 6, 8). Jesus protects and nourishes His people by raising up leaders after His own heart (Jer 3:15).
However, we mess up Jesus' loving protection and His attempts to nurture us by:
* not obeying or loving the leaders He has given us,
* choosing leaders different than those chosen by God,
* not forgiving bad leaders,
* not accepting God's call to leadership (Jgs 9:8ff), and
* not praying for leaders (see 1 Tm 2:1-2).

Every group will naturally have leaders, but those under Jesus' lordship will supernaturally have leaders. Those who follow Jesus as Leader will be and have good leaders.

Prayer: Father, make us worthy of Your call and fulfill by Your power "every honest intention and work of faith" (2 Thes 1:11).

Promise: "It is no more than right that we thank God unceasingly for you, brothers, because your faith grows apace and your mutual love increases." -2 Thes 1:3

Praise: St. Monica faithfully prayed for the salvation of her husband, son, and grandson, and her fervent prayers were answered decades later.

PM eNewsletter 21st Sunday in ordinary time

August 26th 21st Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church heralds another tremendous
man of faith.

St. John the Baptist, who without fear, proclaimed what
was truth till he was finally beheaded.

Jesus, give us that steadfastness of heart that we will
first of all learn the truth as taught by the catechism
of the Catholic church, and then be willingly in love,
as we proclaim it to others.

Let us be heralds of Your love and let others see the
Christ in us.

Let us stand for Your law of love, and let us be as
fearless as St. John was in standing for what was right.

Thank You Jesus.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday SERIOUSLY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/26/2012

"How can anyone take it seriously?" -John 6:60

Jesus called Himself the Bread come down from heaven (Jn 6:33). He said His flesh was real
food and His blood real drink (Jn 6:55). "Many of His disciples remarked, 'This sort of talk
is hard to endure! How can anyone take it seriously?' " (Jn 6:60)

It's hard to "endure" the words of Jesus and to take them seriously (Jn 6:60). This applies
not only to Jesus' words on the Eucharist, but also to His words on many other things. For
example, His word commands wives to "be submissive to their husbands as if to the Lord" and
husbands to love their wives by giving themselves up for them (Eph 5:22, 25). This kind of
talk is hard to endure. Few people, even Christians, take it seriously.

This kind of talk seems absurd, for it is the message of the cross (1 Cor 1:18), and people
tend not to take seriously what they think is absurd. Therefore, they don't take Jesus
seriously, since He often speaks of nothing but the absurdity of the cross (see 1 Cor 2:2).
Only by embracing the cross will we take Christ seriously.

Prayer: Father, may I take Jesus' words so seriously that I know, live, and share them.

Promise: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." -Jos 24:15

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Lord of compassion. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
and those who are crushed in spirit He saves" (Ps 34:19).

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE POWER OF PRAYER

TRANSFORMED LIVES

... The more room we make for prayer the more we will see our life transformed and
enlivened by the tangible power of God's love.

NOT ALIENATED FROM REALITY

Contemplation of Christ in our life does not alienate us ... from reality. Rather it
enables us to share even more in human events, because the Lord, in attracting us to
Him through prayer, enables us to make ourselves present and close to every brother and
sister in His love.

Jesus called Himself the Bread come down from heaven (Jn 6:33). He said His flesh was real food and His blood real drink (Jn 6:55). "Many of His disciples remarked, 'This sort of talk is hard to endure! How can anyone take it seriously?' " (Jn 6:60)
It's hard to "endure" the words of Jesus and to take them seriously (Jn 6:60). This applies not only to Jesus' words on the Eucharist, but also to His words on many other things. For example, His word commands wives to "be submissive to their husbands as if to the Lord" and husbands to love their wives by giving themselves up for them (Eph 5:22, 25). This kind of talk is hard to endure. Few people, even Christians, take it seriously.
This kind of talk seems absurd, for it is the message of the cross (1 Cor 1:18), and people tend not to take seriously what they think is absurd. Therefore, they don't take Jesus seriously, since He often speaks of nothing but the absurdity of the cross (see 1 Cor 2:2). Only by embracing the cross will we take Christ seriously.

Prayer: Father, may I take Jesus' words so seriously that I know, live, and share them.

Promise: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." -Jos 24:15

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Lord of compassion. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit He saves" (Ps 34:19).

HONOR ROLE - One Bread, One Body, 8/25/2012

Saturday, August 25, 2012, St. Louis, St. Joseph Calasanz

Ezekiel 43:1-7, Psalm 85:9-14, Matthew 23:1-12

HONOR ROLE

"They are fond of places of honor." -Matthew 23:6

Our American society is "fond of places of honor." We have honor rolls, radio and TV interviews, Halls of Fame, autograph sessions, awards banquets, and numerous other ways to honor others. While the Lord does call us to honor our parents (see Dt 5:16; Sir 3:2ff) and all people (1 Pt 2:17), He is adamant that we do not seek honor for ourselves.
"Let another praise you - not your own mouth; someone else - not your own lips" (Prv 27:2). Yet though we don't praise ourselves directly, we are not to even desire that others praise us. That presents a great spiritual danger to us. "As the crucible tests silver and the furnace gold, so a man is tested by the praise he receives" (Prv 27:21). Receiving praise can be dangerous to our eternal soul in that it can lead to pride, the chief sin among capital sins. Yet we are to live praiseworthy lives in a public, visible setting (Mt 5:16). How do we conduct ourselves in this risky situation?
We are to constantly seek to humble ourselves (Mt 23:12). Then Jesus exalts us, so we must then humble ourselves even more, which leads to more exaltation. Thus, like John the Baptizer, we constantly seek to decrease so that Jesus may increase (Jn 3:30). If God then chooses to honor us with a crown of glory, we graciously receive it and instantly pass that crown of honor on to our God (see Rv 4:10). Therefore, our only fondness for places of honor would be because Jesus gets more glory (see 2 Cor 9:13).

Prayer: Father, "not to us but to Your name give glory" (Ps 115:1). "Hallowed be Your name" (Mt 6:9).

Promise: "Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss." -Ps 85:11

Praise: St. Joseph's greatest mission was the educating of little children.

EVERYTHING GOOD COMES FROM NAZARETH - One Bread, One Body, 8/24/2012

Revelation 21:9-14, Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18, John 1:45-51

EVERYTHING GOOD COMES FROM NAZARETH

"Nathanael's response to that was, 'Can anything good come from Nazareth?' " -John 1:46

Philip told Nathanael (Bartholomew) that Jesus was "the One Moses spoke of in the law - the prophets too - Jesus, Son of Joseph, from Nazareth" (Jn 1:45). Nathanael responded by putting down Nazareth, and thereby putting down Joseph and Jesus, who were from Nazareth.
The early Jewish Christians were tempted to reject Gentiles and the places where they lived. We too are tempted to look down upon, reject, avoid, and ignore people we don't agree with. Likewise, we are tempted to reject the places in which they live. In doing this, we reject, refuse to serve, and refuse to listen to Jesus and others (see Mt 25:45; Lk 10:16). Jesus will never reject us (Jn 6:37), but He is rejected by many people and places. He is the Cornerstone rejected by the builders (Mt 21:42).
Like Nathanael, we must repent of our rejection of Jesus, His people, and His places. Then we will know that everything good comes from Nazareth through the Nazorean, Jesus.

Prayer: Father, give me Your heart for the people and places I avoid against Your will.

Promise: "The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb." -Rv 21:14

Praise: St. Bartholomew is said to have converted the king of Armenia to the faith. For that, he was martyred by the king's brother. He is a patron saint of Armenia today.

(Let's reject Satan, his evil works, and sin rather than rejecting Jesus and His good works. For a related teaching, order our leaflet "Do You Renounce Satan?" or on audio AV 44-1 or video V-44.)

CLEAN AT LAST - One Bread, One Body, 8/23/2012

Thursday, August 23, 2012, St. Rose of Lima

Ezekiel 36:23-28, Psalm 51:12-15, 18-19, Matthew 22:1-14
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082312.cfm

CLEAN AT LAST

"I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall return to You." -Psalm 51:15

Do you regret having committed certain sins? Have you let your past sins make you feel "dirty"? The Lord has promised "to cleanse you from all your impurities" (Ez 36:25). "Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow; though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool" (Is 1:18).
The Lord will tread underfoot our guilt and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea (Mi 7:19). "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He put our transgressions from us" (Ps 103:12). He will thoroughly wash us from our guilt (Ps 51:4) and create a clean and new heart for us (see Ps 51:12; Ez 36:26). The Lord will simply forget all our sins (Ez 18:22), if we only repent and ask His forgiveness.
"I tell you, there will likewise be more joy in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need to repent" (Lk 15:7). The Lord wants to run out to sinners, throw His arms around them, kiss them, give them gifts, and have a special dinner in their honor (see Lk 15:21ff).
However, the Lord does not force His love, affection, and forgiveness on us. We must open the door by repenting. Go to Confession as soon as possible and let the Lord love and cleanse you.

Prayer: Father, forgive me for I know not what I do (see Lk 23:34).

Promise: "The invited are many, the elect are few." -Mt 22:14

Praise: St. Rose had a special heart for doing penance as a reparation for sin. She offered her body to God as a living sacrifice (Rm 12:1).

SHEEP-SHEPHERDS - One Bread, One Body, 8/22/2012

Wednesday, August 22, 2012, Queenship of Mary

Ezekiel 34:1-11, Psalm 23:1-6, Matthew 20:1-16
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082212.cfm

SHEEP-SHEPHERDS

"Thus says the Lord God: 'Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves!' " -Ezekiel 34:2

If we love Jesus, we will feed, tend, and shepherd His sheep, that is, His people (Jn 21:15-17). However, many Christians think that you have to be leading a church to be a shepherd. On the contrary, the Lord considers parents, leaders of all kinds, employers, and all Christians to have some shepherding responsibilities. God has put a flock in your daily life and He wants you to give this flock a shepherd's care (1 Pt 5:2).
Do you consider yourself to be the pastor of your family, neighborhood, office, or factory? You probably don't. Therefore, you are probably not strengthening the weak, healing the sick, binding up the injured, bringing back the strayed, and seeking the lost (Ez 34:4). You are probably not a good shepherd because you think you are only a sheep.
Repent of your ignorance and irresponsibility concerning your shepherding responsibilities. The Lord will have mercy on you. He may give you a full day's pay even if you start to shepherd your children, neighbors, employees, or co-workers in the eleventh hour of a twelve-hour shift (Mt 20:9). Go to Confession. Ask the Good Shepherd for mercy. Then be a good shepherd, and thereby a good sheep.

Prayer: Father, may I lay down my life for the sheep You have given me (Jn 10:11, 15, 17).

Promise: "Thus the last shall be first and the first shall be last." -Mt 20:16

Praise: The Blessed Virgin Mary, a lowly teenage girl, was raised to high places (Lk 1:52) as Queen of heaven and earth. Praise God, Who rewards His beloved for their service to Him!

"WITH ALL THE TRAPPINGS"

"Then who can be saved?" -Matthew 19:25

"The love of money is the root of all evil" (1 Tm 6:10). "Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and a trap" (1 Tm 6:9). We don't have to have money or be rich to be trapped. Even the poorest person who loves money and wants to be rich is trapped.
This trap is sprung by our treasures changing and perverting our hearts (Lk 12:34). Then from the deep recesses of our hearts come wicked designs (Mk 7:21), and the wages of these sins is death (Rm 6:23). For example, the prince of Tyre was "haughty of heart" (Ez 28:2, 5). He took all the credit for his financial success (see Ez 28:4, 6ff). This ultimately resulted in the prince of Tyre being thrust "down to the pit, there to die a bloodied corpse, in the heart of the sea" (Ez 28:8). He was dragged "down to ruin and destruction" (1 Tm 6:9) and had come "to grief amid great pain" (1 Tm 6:10).
Many people, rich and poor, are caught in this deadly, damning trap. Think of all the people buying lottery tickets, trying to become famous, or working to be millionaires. Most of these people want to be rich. This is the very desire that traps them.
Desire righteousness (Mt 5:6) rather than riches. Seek first God's kingdom (Mt 6:33). Be caught in the grasp of Christ (Phil 3:12), Who will free you from the trap of the love of money.

Prayer: Father, release me from self-imposed bonds.

Promise: "I give you My solemn word, in the new age when the Son of Man takes His seat upon a throne befitting His glory, you who have followed Me shall likewise take your places on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel." -Mt 19:28

Praise: Pope St. Pius X renewed the Church by promoting Bible study and Holy Communion.

PM eNewsletter 20th Sunday in ordinary time

August 19th 20th Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church celebrates the queenship of Mary,
as she so rightly deserves.

She was a faithful servant, and a tremendous example of trust
while on earth, and so she should be honored as Queen of
heaven and earth.

Let her intercession continue to cause grace to flow to all
of us.

Let Your love for mom flow also into us, and let us praise,
and glorify You as our Lord, God and King.

Let us see that Your plan of love is constantly working out
in everything, and give us the graces necessary for us to
really trust You every day in every way.

Thank You Jesus.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE WISDOM NOVENA
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/19/2012

"Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding." -Proverbs 9:6

Are you acting like a fool or a thoughtful person? (see Eph 5:15) The answer to this
question depends in part on whether you are making "the most of the present opportunity"
(Eph 5:16). You're a fool if you are saving up for a rainy day when "this very night your
life" may "be required of you" (Lk 12:20). You're a fool if you are not correctly
interpreting the present time (see Lk 12:56). Wise men and women know what time it is,
while fools don't (see Mt 25:1ff).

How can we "not continue in ignorance, but try to discern the will of the Lord"?
(Eph 5:17) If we eat Wisdom's food, we will be wise (Prv 9:4-5). Jesus is Wisdom Food
- in His word and in Holy Communion (see 1 Cor 1:24). If you receive Jesus, He will tell
you what time it is.

Ask the Lord if He wants you to make a novena of Masses in order to seek wisdom by eating
the food of Wisdom in Holy Communion for nine days. Many business people are devoting months
of research and thousands of dollars to interpret the times financially. Will you devote
about nine hours in nine days to interpret the times spiritually? Are you wise enough to
"try to discern the will of the Lord"? Will you ask Jesus to set your watch for you?

Prayer: Father, renew my Confirmation. Activate and deepen Your wisdom in my life.

Promise: "The man who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him." -Jn 6:56

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! You have triumphed over death and given us "life from the dead!" (Rm 11:15

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE POWER OF PRAYER

POWER IN WEAKNESS

The power of God, Who does not abandon us or leave us on our own but becomes our support
and strength, is revealed at the very moment when we experience our own weakness.

GOD WORKS THROUGH WEAKNESS

...To the extent that our union with the Lord increases and that our prayers become
intense, we also .. understand that it is not the power of our own means, our virtues,
our skills that brings about the Kingdom of God but that it is God Who works miracles
precisely through our weakness, our inadequacy for the task.

WITNESS TO GOD'S POWER

In a world in which we risk relying solely on the efficiency and power of human means,
we are called to rediscover and to witness to the power of God which is communicated in
prayer, with which every day we grow in conforming our life to that of Christ ...

THE WISDOM NOVENA - One Bread, One Body, 8/19/2012

Sunday, August 19, 2012, 20th Sunday Ordinary Time

Proverbs 9:1-6, Ephesians 5:15-20, Psalm 34:2-3, 10-15, John 6:51-58

THE WISDOM NOVENA

"Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding." -Proverbs 9:6

Are you acting like a fool or a thoughtful person? (see Eph 5:15) The answer to this question depends in part on whether you are making "the most of the present opportunity" (Eph 5:16). You're a fool if you are saving up for a rainy day when "this very night your life" may "be required of you" (Lk 12:20). You're a fool if you are not correctly interpreting the present time (see Lk 12:56). Wise men and women know what time it is, while fools don't (see Mt 25:1ff).
How can we "not continue in ignorance, but try to discern the will of the Lord"? (Eph 5:17) If we eat Wisdom's food, we will be wise (Prv 9:4-5). Jesus is Wisdom Food - in His word and in Holy Communion (see 1 Cor 1:24). If you receive Jesus, He will tell you what time it is.
Ask the Lord if He wants you to make a novena of Masses in order to seek wisdom by eating the food of Wisdom in Holy Communion for nine days. Many business people are devoting months of research and thousands of dollars to interpret the times financially. Will you devote about nine hours in nine days to interpret the times spiritually? Are you wise enough to "try to discern the will of the Lord"? Will you ask Jesus to set your watch for you?

Prayer: Father, renew my Confirmation. Activate and deepen Your wisdom in my life.

Promise: "The man who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him." -Jn 6:56

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! You have triumphed over death and given us "life from the dead!" (Rm 11:15)

THE FUNCTIONAL FAMILY - One Bread, One Body, 8/18/2012

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Ezekiel 18:1-10, 13, 30-32, Psalm 51:12-15, 18-19, Matthew 19:13-15

THE FUNCTIONAL FAMILY

"What is the meaning of this proverb that you recite in the land of Israel: 'Fathers have eaten green grapes, thus their children's teeth are on edge'? As I live, says the Lord God: I swear that there shall no longer be anyone among you who will repeat this proverb in Israel." -Ezekiel 18:2-3

It has become fashionable to blame our parents for our problems. Some people try to excuse their actions, and even their sins, by saying that their fathers were alcoholic and abusive. Others appeal to the fact that their mothers didn't want them. Some talk about not being told as children that they were loved. Others blame their problems on the genes passed on to them by their parents.
There is some truth in these excuses. Our parents do have a greater influence on us than any other people in the world. However, our parents should not have a greater influence on us than God does. The harm in the most dysfunctional family should be eclipsed by the perfect functioning of the family that is the Holy Trinity. Even the worst things that your father or mother did to you are secondary to what your heavenly Father did for you when He gave His Son to die and rise to save us. Sin and evil have significantly increased, but "grace has far surpassed" them (Rm 5:20). We have no excuses. We are in God's functional family.

Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, may Your living in me take precedence over everything that has happened to me.

Promise: "Let the children come to Me. Do not hinder them. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these." -Mt 19:14

Praise: "I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall ever be in my mouth" (Ps 34:2).

THE CROSS OF UNILATERAL FAITHFULNESS - One Bread, One Body, 8/17/2012

Friday, August 17, 2012

Ezekiel 16:1-15, 60, 63, Isaiah 12:2-6, Matthew 19:3-12

THE CROSS OF UNILATERAL FAITHFULNESS

"Let no man separate what God has joined." -Matthew 19:6

Because the Roman Catholic Church has taken Matthew 19:6 seriously, many people have left the Catholic Church. They prefer to ignore this verse rather than undergoing the great suffering of remaining unilaterally faithful in their marriage. However, Jesus wants us to carry our cross daily (see Lk 9:23). He wants us to be like Him not only in His glorious victory, but also in the way He responds to the terrible rejection He experiences daily (see Heb 6:6).
Jesus is the most divorced Person Who has ever lived. He is sinned against and cheated on hundreds of thousands of times daily. He responds to this awesome rejection with unconditional, perfectly faithful love. "If we are unfaithful he will still remain faithful, for He cannot deny Himself" (2 Tm 2:13). One of God's purposes for marriage is to be a sign (a sacrament) of the Lord's faithful love for His body, the Church.
A main purpose of even the worst marriage is still to be a sign of the Lord's faithfulness. That is why couples are married "for better or for worse, until death do you part." Many of you are suffering terribly in difficult marriages. Many are suffering separation or divorce. Your sufferings are not in vain. You are a sign of the Lord's faithful love. The Lord is working all things together for the good in and through your life (see Rm 8:28). Suffer faithfully and therefore redemptively.

Prayer: Father, may faithfulness be as important to me as it is to You.

Promise: "My strength and my courage is the Lord, and He has been my Savior." -Is 12:2

Praise: Jeremy and Mary prayed a fifty-four day novena to discern whether or not to marry. Midway through the novena, the Lord blessed Jeremy with a job. At the close of the novena, they became an engaged couple.

"I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION" - One Bread, One Body, 8/16/2012

Thursday, August 16, 2012, St. Stephen of Hungary

Ezekiel 12:1-12, Psalm 78:56-59, 61-62, Matthew 18:21-19:1

"I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION"

"One was brought in who owed him a huge amount." -Matthew 18:24

The original Greek of Matthew's parable sheds light on the great difference between the two debts Jesus discusses. The first servant owed the master "a huge amount" (Mt 18:24), a term which translates to over 100,000 years' wages. The second servant owed "a mere fraction" (Mt 18:28), amounting to about one-hundred days' wages in the Greek. The second debt could realistically be repaid, while repayment of the first debt was impossible.
It was ludicrous for the first servant to contend that he could actually pay the master back 100,000 years' wages (Mt 18:26). He was out of touch with reality. The realistic response would be to fall on his knees and beg for complete mercy (see Lk 18:13) rather than beg for the opportunity to repay his debt, which was impossible (see Ps 49:8-9). Yet this servant wanted to be justified through his own actions. Out of pity, the master forgave the debt. However, the first servant still hadn't changed his mindset or his heart. His approach was still to satisfy debts through payment, not a write-off. So he arrested the one who owed him a debt (Mt 18:30).
If we attempt to justify ourselves with God by our efforts, we will fail (Gal 5:4-5), we won't want to forgive others (Mt 18:30), and we condemn ourselves to be damned (Mt 6:12, 15; 18:34-35). Let's never lose sight of how much God has forgiven us - even for a moment. Then let us totally lose sight of what others have done to us. Let us live to forgive, and forgive so as to live.

Prayer: Father, I accept Your grace to forgive from my heart and with my mind everyone who has hurt me. Bless them with peace.

Promise: "I have made you a sign." -Ez 12:6

Praise: St. Stephen, king of Hungary, prepared himself for battle with prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

MARY, CAUSE OF OUR JOY

"My spirit finds joy in God my Savior." -Luke 1:47

The well-known prayer, "Litany of the Blessed Virgin," addresses Mary as the "cause of our joy." This title of Mary is most appropriate for today's feast of her Assumption into heaven.
Mary's entire being found joy in the Lord (Lk 1:46). She spread that joy to others, even the pre-born baby John, who leapt "for joy" at the sound of Mary's voice as she carried Jesus into their home in her womb (Lk 1:44). Mary was also present in the upper room at Pentecost (see Acts 1:14ff) and surely exulted with joy as her Spouse, the Holy Spirit, filled the apostles, who then brought three thousand people into the Church.
Finally, Mary "was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory" (Catechism, 966). "She already shares in the glory of her Son's Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of His Body" (Catechism, 974). She has been "exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son" (Catechism, 966). Her assumption is a sign of sure hope (Lumen Gentium, 68, Vatican II) that Jesus will raise us up to live with Him forever.
The Lord in His word commands us to rejoice with Mary as she is honored today. Since Mary "is honored, all the members share [her] joy" (1 Cor 12:26). We are to "rejoice with" her (Rm 12:15). Mary would be the first to proclaim: "Rejoice in the Lord always! I say it again. Rejoice!" (Phil 4:4) Rejoice with Mary, the "cause of our joy."

Prayer: Holy Spirit, some Christians respond to the joy of Your spouse, Mary, with disdain. Convert their frowns into smiles of joy today.

Promise: "God's temple in heaven opened and in the temple could be seen the ark of His covenant." -Rv 11:19

Praise: Praise the risen and returning Jesus, drawing all people to Himself! (Jn 12:32)

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

FATHER-FOCUS

"I gasp with open mouth in my yearning for Your commands." -Psalm 119:131

I recall an occasion years ago when my young son was on one side of a street and I was on the other. I had been gradually teaching my son the skills needed to cross a street without clinging to me for blind guidance. Although there was little danger in the situation when viewed through an adult's eyes, I could easily sense the fear in his eyes. He focused intently on my every word: "First, look to the left...then to the right. Are any cars coming? Good, now run straight to me." My little son obeyed each command exactly, just as if his life depended on it. He yearned for my commands (Ps 119:131) because he knew his father's word meant safety and success.
Surely this is what Jesus has in mind when He says: "Unless you change and become like little children, you will not enter the kingdom of God" (Mt 18:3). If we don't follow God's commands, it would be as if my young son suddenly decided he could cross the street without his daddy's help, thank you. Not heeding God's commands exposes us to grave dangers. The Lord's commands are meant for our welfare, not for our harm (see Mt 18:14; Jer 29:11). God tells us, as He told the prophet Ezekiel: "Obey Me when I speak to you" (Ez 2:8).

Prayer: Father, "Your decrees are my delight; they are my counselors" (Ps 119:24). Thank You, my God, for Your guidance and love.

Promise: "Whoever makes himself lowly, becoming like this child, is of greatest importance in that heavenly reign." -Mt 18:4

Praise: Suffering a near-fatal illness only deepened St. Maximilian's efforts in spreading God's truth and defending the faith.

TONGUE LASHING

" 'Of course he does,' Peter replied. Then Jesus on entering the house asked, without giving him time to speak: 'What is your opinion, Simon?' " -Matthew 17:25

Jesus told Peter to go fishing. Peter opened the mouth of the first fish he caught and discovered "there a coin worth twice the temple tax" (Mt 17:27). Likewise, what came out of the fish's mouth was probably worth twice as much as what came out of Peter's mouth. He took his foot out of his mouth only to change feet. He had a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. For example, Peter shot off his mouth at the Last Supper, boasting he would never desert Jesus and would even die for Him (see Lk 22:33). Yet, after the Last Supper, Peter fell asleep and wouldn't even open His mouth for an hour of prayer.
However, the good news is that the Holy Spirit got Peter's tongue. Immediately, Peter's words were valuable. His golden words were used by the Lord to lead three thousand into God's kingdom on the first Pentecost (Acts 2:41). He praised the Lord in other languages and led peoples of many different languages to a personal commitment to Jesus. Peter's words healed, raised the dead, and delivered others from demons (Acts 9:32ff). His words were Spirit and life (Jn 6:63). Give your speech to the Lord. He will teach you "what to say and how to speak" (Jn 12:49).

Prayer: Father, may I receive the Spirit into my heart and then speak out of the abundance of my heart (Lk 6:45).

Promise: "Like the bow which appears in the clouds on a rainy day was the splendor that surrounded Him. Such was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the Lord." -Ez 1:28

Praise: St. Hippolytus wrote the earliest known Christian commentary on Scripture, fell into error, but was finally reconciled with the Church. He gave his life for Jesus as a martyr.
