PM eNewsletter The fourth Sunday in ordinary time

January 31st The fourth Sunday in ordinary time

This week, Lord, we celebrate Your presentation in the temple.

Let us see that we are so blessed to be able to come to the
temple of Your Sacred Heart.

Jesus, You absolutely bless us with Your true presence in the
Eucharist.

Lord, when You showed St. Margaret Your heart on fire
with love, You gave us a look at a perfect devotion that we can
do to honor You and Your love for us.

Help us always to sit in wonder at Your love and be excited by
that love.

Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday SURPRISED BY LOVE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=1/31/2010

"When I became a man I put childish ways aside." —1 Corinthians 13:11

Saul resembled the indignant Jews from Nazareth in today's
Gospel. He surely wanted to throw Jesus over a cliff (see Lk 4:29).
Such was Saul's zeal when he opposed Jesus and His followers.
He harassed the Church, entered many Christian homes, "dragged
men and women out, and threw them into jail" (Acts 8:3). Saul
once testified: "I sent many of God's holy people to prison. When
they were to be put to death I cast my vote against them...Indeed,
so wild was my fury against them that I pursued them even to
foreign cities" (Acts 26:10-11). Saul was one of those who would
put a Christian to death and "claim to be serving God!" (Jn 16:2)

Saul couldn't accept Jesus in his native place (see Lk 4:24). So
Jesus gave him a new nature and a new native place. Jesus
appeared to Saul (Acts 9:3ff), gave him a new nature in baptism
(Acts 9:18), and a new native place by granting him citizenship in
heaven (Phil 3:20). Saul had a heart of stone, and was a man
without love. Set free by the love of Jesus, "Saul (also known as
Paul)" (Acts 13:9) became a "pillar of iron, a wall of brass" who
spread the word of God to many nations (Jer 1:18).

How could such a zealous, furious man change into a person so
loving and sensitive that he could write the beautiful, timeless
words of love recorded in 1 Corinthians 13? Paul's fury melted as
the Holy Spirit poured out the love of God into his heart (Rm 5:5).

Who is the hard, angry Saul in your life? Can you love this Saul
into the arms of Jesus? "Love never fails" (1 Cor 13:8).

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

PEACE AND CREATION

"URGENT CHALLENGE"
Protecting the natural environment in order to build a
world of peace is ... a duty incumbent upon each and all.
It is an urgent challenge, one to be faced with renewed
and concerted commitment; it is also a providential
opportunity to hand down to coming generation the
prospect of a better future for all.

"FERVENT PRAYER"
I invite all believers to raise a fervent prayer to God ... so
that all men and women may take to heart the urgent
appeal: If you want to cultivate peace, protect creation.

LITTLE BIG HORN - One Bread, One Body, 1/29/2010

Friday, January 29, 2010

2 Samuel 11:1-10, 13-17, Psalm 51:3-7, 10-11, Mark 4:26-34
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/012910.shtml

LITTLE BIG HORN

"What comparison shall we use for the reign of God? What image will help
to present it? It is like mustard seed." —Mark 4:30-31

The kingdom of God encompasses the universe. It is unshakable and will
last forever. It is the kingdom above all kingdoms. It is sovereign and
supreme. Yet, Jesus surprisingly compares the biggest and greatest kingdom
of all to the smallest seed of all — the mustard seed. Jesus' point is
that the greatest things begin with the smallest things.

For instance, one of David's greatest sins was adultery with Bathsheba,
which led to the subsequent murder of her husband Uriah. These sins
eventually resulted in a civil war and the death of David's son, Absalom
(see 2 Sm 12:11; 16:11, 22; 18:15). These "big sins" began with a little,
impure glance (see 2 Sm 11:2).

Judas' great sin was betraying Jesus to the religious leaders, which led
to Jesus' crucifixion. This worst sin may have begun with Judas stealing a
little change from Jesus and the apostles (see Jn 12:6).

Elijah's greatest work was anointing Elisha. This anointing resulted in
two other anointings which changed the whole country. This great work
began when Elijah heard God in a tiny whispering sound (1 Kgs 19:12ff).

God's biggest and greatest work of all was Jesus' death, resurrection, and
ascension followed by the coming of the Holy Spirit. This began when Mary
conceived Jesus, Who became a human being smaller than my thumbnail. Don't
scorn small beginnings (Zec 4:10).

Prayer: Father, use my little tongue to do big things for You (see Jas
3:5).

Promise: "Have mercy on me, O God, in Your goodness; in the greatness of
Your compassion wipe out my offense." —Ps 51:3

Praise: Patricia goes to Confession frequently to deal with "small sins."

WHY ME? - One Bread, One Body, 1/28/2010

Thursday, January 28, 2010, St. Thomas Aquinas

2 Samuel 7:18-19, 24-29, Psalm 132:1-5, 11-14, Mark 4:21-25
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/012810.shtml

WHY ME?

"Who am I, Lord God, and who are the members of my house, that You have
brought me to this point?" —2 Samuel 7:18

We should never think we deserve to wake up, live another day, breathe,
walk, sing, smile, or pray. These and millions of other things are all
gifts from God as He constantly pours out His love on us. We've done
nothing to merit these blessings and ought not to take them as merited.
When something bad happens to us and our families, we say: "Who am I, Lord
God, and who are the members of my house, that You have brought me to this
point?" (2 Sm 7:18) We are quick to say that we don't deserve our
sufferings, although we give the impression we do deserve our blessings.

For the most part it's the other way around. We are responsible for many
of our sufferings. We have caused them by our sins. However, our blessings
have not been caused by our meritorious conduct but by the Lord's
crucified, unconditional love for us.

Therefore, we should live in gratitude for millions of unmerited blessings
and in repentance for our sins and consequent sufferings. In the midst of
God's love, we should ask: "Who am I ...?" And we answer: "I am a sinner,
forgiven, saved, and loved by God in His mercy." Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, give me an attitude of gratitude even under the most
difficult circumstances.

Promise: "In the measure you give you shall receive, and more
besides." —Mk 4:24

Praise: St. Thomas was humbled by the vision of the glories of God before
he died. He then ceased his prolific theological writing, and prepared his
soul for the hour of death, saying, "All I have written seems to me like
so much straw compared with what I have seen and what has been revealed to
me."

ROAD-KILL - One Bread, One Body, 1/25/2010

Monday, January 25, 2010, Conversion of St. Paul

Acts 22:3-16 or, Acts 9:1-22, Psalm 117:1-2, Mark 16:15-18
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/012510.shtml

ROAD-KILL

"He is here now with authorization from the chief priests to arrest any
who invoke Your name." —Acts 9:14

The Damascus Christians knew that Saul was nearing town, planning to
arrest them if they spoke of Jesus (Acts 9:13-14). For days prior to
Saul's coming, some must have had nightmares about possible imprisonment,
breakup of marriages and families, suffering, and torture. Some may have
had second thoughts about following Jesus in the face of inevitable
suffering.

Imagine their joy when they heard that Jesus not only stopped Saul from
harming them, but had converted him into a powerful evangelist. Imagine
how they felt upon hearing that Jesus so identified Himself with them that
when they were persecuted, He was persecuted (Acts 9:4). Can you imagine
how they felt listening to Saul reduce the vocal "Jewish community of
Damascus to silence with his proofs that this Jesus was the Messiah"?
(Acts 9:22)

Saul's conversion surely gave these Christians great confidence that
"nothing is impossible with God" (Lk 1:37). Through Saul's conversion,
Jesus assured them, as He later assured Saul (now Paul), to keep
witnessing without fear (Acts 18:9-10). Saul's conversion is likewise a
sign for us today to never fear persecution for our faith. Jesus can
instantly make sinners holy, convert persecutors to evangelists, and
change enemies into allies. Don't shrink before the Sauls in your life.
Tell them that Jesus is Lord. Then expect Him to do far greater than you
can imagine (Eph 3:20).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may we never place limits on You. Use us to bring
about many conversions this year.

Promise: "Steadfast is His kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the
Lord endures forever." —Ps 117:2

Praise: "How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God!
How inscrutable His judgments, how unsearchable His ways!" (Rm 11:33)

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE BIBLE CHALLENGE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=1/24/2010

"He came to Nazareth where He had been reared, and entering
the synagogue on the sabbath as He was in the habit of doing,
He stood up to do the reading." —Luke 4:16

Jesus began His public ministry reading and proclaiming God's
word. Ezra began a renewal of the Israelite nation by reading
and teaching God's word from daybreak to midday (Neh 8:3, 8).
We too can begin this year with an extensive time in God's
word. Consider committing yourself to read and pray the Bible
for an hour a day until the beginning of Lent. If this seems too
much, commit yourself to fifteen to thirty minutes of daily Bible
reading for the next two weeks.

When we deeply expose ourselves to God's word, we are
purified of evil (Eph 5:26) and trimmed of that which limits our
growth in the Lord (Jn 15:3). By receiving God's word, we hear
the Lord better and grow in faith (Rm 10:17). God's word will
help us know ourselves better by judging the thoughts and
reflections of our hearts (Heb 4:12). By God's word, we are fed
spiritually (Mt 4:4), made joyful, and strengthened (Neh 8:10).
God's word will make us "fully competent and equipped for
every good work" (2 Tm 3:17).

These are only a few effects of God's word. His word is so
living, effective (Heb 4:12), powerful, and rich that this may
well be the best year of our lives if we begin it with a deep
experience of the word.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

PEACE AND CREATION

"PROFOUNDLY LINKED"

May this be clear to world leaders and to those ... who are
concerned for the future of humanity: the protection of
creation and peacemaking are profoundly linked.

"HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY"

The ecological crisis offers an historic opportunity to
develop a common plan of action aimed at orienting the
model of global development towards greater respect for
creation and for an integral human development inspired
by the values proper to charity in truth.

"THE QUEST FOR PEACE"

The quest for peace by people of good will surely would
become easier if all acknowledge the indivisible
relationship between God, human beings and the whole
of creation.

THE BIBLE CHALLENGE - One Bread, One Body, 1/24/2010

Nehemiah 8:2-4, 5-6, 8-10, 1 Corinthians 12:12-30, Psalm 19:8-10, 15, Luke

THE BIBLE CHALLENGE

"He came to Nazareth where He had been reared, and entering the synagogue
on the sabbath as He was in the habit of doing, He stood up to do the
reading." —Luke 4:16

Jesus began His public ministry reading and proclaiming God's word. Ezra
began a renewal of the Israelite nation by reading and teaching God's word
from daybreak to midday (Neh 8:3, 8). We too can begin this year with an
extensive time in God's word. Consider committing yourself to read and
pray the Bible for an hour a day until the beginning of Lent. If this
seems too much, commit yourself to fifteen to thirty minutes of daily
Bible reading for the next two weeks.

When we deeply expose ourselves to God's word, we are purified of evil
(Eph 5:26) and trimmed of that which limits our growth in the Lord (Jn
15:3). By receiving God's word, we hear the Lord better and grow in faith
(Rm 10:17). God's word will help us know ourselves better by judging the
thoughts and reflections of our hearts (Heb 4:12). By God's word, we are
fed spiritually (Mt 4:4), made joyful, and strengthened (Neh 8:10). God's
word will make us "fully competent and equipped for every good work" (2 Tm
3:17).

These are only a few effects of God's word. His word is so living,
effective (Heb 4:12), powerful, and rich that this may well be the best
year of our lives if we begin it with a deep experience of the word.

Prayer: Father, may I be as eager for Your word as a newborn baby for milk
(1 Pt 2:2).

Promise: "If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one
member is honored, all the members share its joy." —1 Cor 12:26

Praise: Praise You, risen and glorified Jesus, the Word-made-flesh! Be
exalted and glorified in all the earth. Alleluia!

CRYING AND BABIES

"David seized his garments and rent them." —2 Samuel 1:11

Although David had won a great victory over the Amalekites, he "mourned
and wept and fasted" (2 Sm 1:12) on hearing of the deaths of his deranged
enemy Saul and devoted friend Jonathan. Although we may be victorious,
blessed, happy, and holy in our personal lives, we also should mourn
because of the holocaust of millions of babies through abortion. At the
massacre of the Holy Innocents of Bethlehem, "a cry was heard at Ramah,
sobbing and loud lamentation: Rachel bewailing her children; no comfort
for her, since they are no more" (Mt 2:18, see Jer 31:15). We also must
cry to show that we are human and not too numbed to react to mass murder.
We should pray: "Oh, that my head were a spring of water, my eyes a
fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night over the slain of the
daughter of my people!" (Jer 8:23, NAB)

If we care enough to cry, the Lord will promise to answer our prayers
"because you were heartsick and have humbled yourself before the Lord when
you heard My threats that this place and its inhabitants would become a
desolation and a curse; because you tore your garments and wept before Me;
I in turn have listened, says the Lord" (2 Kgs 22:19). By God's grace,
abortion and its causes will be stopped. The Lord promises us: "Cease your
cries of mourning, wipe the tears from your eyes. The sorrow you have
shown shall have its reward, says the Lord, they shall return from the
enemy's land. There is hope for your future, says the Lord" (Jer
31:16-17). Cry tears of sorrow and repentance now so you will ultimately
cry tears of joy.

Prayer: Father, on this anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision
legalizing abortion, may I pour out my heart like water in Your presence
(Lam 2:19).

Promise: "Rouse your power, and come to save us." —Ps 80:3

Praise: Each year a large group of teens give up their time and energy to
walk in the Rally for Life.

CRUCIFIED, UNCONDITIONAL, ABSURD, IMPOSSIBLE, DIVINE, CHRISTIAN _______

"The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord's
anointed, as to lay a hand on him, for he is the Lord's anointed." —1
Samuel 24:7

David refrained from killing Saul, God's anointed one, although Saul had
tried to kill David several times. However, Jesus, the Christ (the
Anointed One), not only refused to kill His enemies, but even chose to be
killed by them. Jesus not only forgave His enemies, but died for love of
them. This is unconditional, self-sacrificing, divine love. This crucified
love seems absurd "to those who are headed for ruin, but to us who are
experiencing salvation it is the power of God" (1 Cor 1:18).

Jesus calls us, His followers, to love as He loves (Jn 13:34). He commands
us to lay down our lives for each other, even for our enemies. This is
impossible for us to do or even want to do, but "nothing is impossible
with God" (Lk 1:37).

When we love as Jesus loves, not only taking up the cross but hanging on
it for our enemies, we will be Christians in the fullest sense. "They'll
know we are Christians by our love" (see Jn 13:35), by our crucified love
for enemies.

Look at a picture of Jesus on the cross. Choose the absurdity of the
cross: to die for your enemies, to do the humanly impossible, to love as
Jesus loves, to be Christian.

Prayer: Father, may Your love in my life be incomprehensible to anyone not
focused on the cross of Jesus.

Promise: "He named twelve as His companions whom He would send to preach
the good news; they were likewise to have authority to expel demons." —Mk
3:14-15

Praise: Spain's first martyr, St. Vincent's crucified love led him to
endure great tortures during his martyrdom without compromising his faith.

JEALOUSY AND GOD

"Saul was jealous of David." —1 Samuel 18:9

Saul was jealous of David (1 Sm 18:9). He tried to kill David on several
occasions. The brothers of Joseph sold him into slavery because they were
jealous of him (Acts 7:9, RNAB). The Jewish leaders in Pisidian Antioch
"became very jealous" of St. Paul's powerful preaching and persecuted him
(Acts 13:45). The Pharisees handed Jesus over out of jealousy to be
crucified (Mt 27:18). The high priests and Sadducees arrested and punished
the apostles, for they were "filled with jealousy" (Acts 5:17).

Jealousy in support of a religious leader or ministry is not of God. When
some of Moses' loyal followers got upset that others were prophesying in
addition to Moses, Moses corrected them, saying, "Are you jealous for my
sake? Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!" (Nm 11:29) Are
you attracted to certain religious leaders or ministries? Beware of any
tendency toward jealousy. Pray that your love for that leader or that
ministry be full of true charity, for "charity is not jealous" (Catechism,
1825; see 1 Cor 13:4).

Christians who exhibit any jealousy are infants, according to Scripture (1
Cor 3:1-3). Jealousy proceeds from the desires of the flesh (Gal 5:20) and
is not compatible with Christian living. Jealousy is a symptom of
something very wrong within us. "Where there [is] jealousy...there are
also inconstancy and all kinds of vile behavior" (Jas 3:16). "Jealousy
rots the bones" (Prv 14:30).

Prayer: Father, pour out your love in my heart (Rm 5:5). "May charity be
the root and foundation of" my life (Eph 3:17).

Promise: "My wanderings You have counted; my tears are stored in Your
flask; are they not recorded in Your book?" —Ps 56:9

Praise: St. Agnes was martyred for her faith in Jesus and her commitment
to remain pure for Him (see 1 Jn 3:3).

NO CAN'T DO

"You cannot..." —1 Samuel 17:33

King Saul told David: "You cannot go up against this Philistine and fight
with him, for you are only a youth" (1 Sm 17:33). However, David didn't
listen to people's opinions. He listened to God, and with God, did what
was thought impossible (Mt 19:26).

Years later, when trying to capture the formidable Jebusite fortress at
Jerusalem, "David was told, 'You cannot enter here: the blind and the lame
will drive you away' " (2 Sm 5:6). This was something like telling David
he couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag. However, David didn't
listen to people. He listened to God, and with God, did what was thought
impossible.

Scripture and Church history are full of people who by faith accomplished
marvels that they were told they couldn't. However, they didn't listen to
people. They listened to God, and with God, did what was thought
impossible.

Many giants are considered beyond challenge. Don't listen to them. Listen
to God, for the battle belongs to the Lord (1 Sm 17:47). Where are the
giants in your life: The pro-choice culture of death? Family and
relationship problems? Renewing your parish? Overcoming compulsions and
addictions? Having more children? Don't listen to people; listen to God.
"For God all things are possible" (Mt 19:26). Be certain that you are
doing only what the Lord is calling you to do, and not jumping out ahead
of Him (see Nm 14:39-45). Once you are certain He is calling you to
battle, be not afraid. Be steadfast and firm (Eph 6:11, 14). You are more
than a conqueror in Jesus (Rm 8:37; 1 Jn 5:5).

Prayer: Father, may I be like a child and boast: "My Daddy is bigger than
your daddy." Abba, You can do all things (Mk 14:36).

Promise: "Go! The Lord will be with you." —1 Sm 17:37

Praise: Pope St. Fabian sent St. Dionysius and others into Gaul in the
third century. He was the first to be chosen to give his life as a martyr
during a new wave of Roman persecution.

CRAZY EIGHTS

"Are these all the sons you have?" —1 Samuel 16:11

Jesse shows up at Samuel's sacrificial meal with seven strapping sons.
After discerning that none of these sons were chosen by God to be King of
Israel, Samuel asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" Had Jesse
lived in today's contraceptive culture of death, it's easy to imagine he'd
quickly deliver a biting response to Samuel's question. However, since
Jesse's lifestyle was innocent of the modern hostility to life, he was
quick to respond that he had still another son, David. This son was the
one God had chosen to be anointed as king.

David was the eighth and youngest son, and he became king of Israel, a man
after God's own heart (Acts 13:22). St. Catherine of Siena was her
parents' twenty-fifth and final child. She became a Doctor of the Church
and the driving force behind bringing the pope back to Rome. What kind of
Church might we have today if Catherine's parents decided twenty-four
children were enough?

In three days, it will be the thirty-seventh year since abortion was
legalized in the USA. How many Davids and Catherines have been aborted in
these thirty-seven years? How many more leaders have not been allowed to
be conceived? It is easy to imagine God saying to America, "Are these all
the sons you have? Are these all the priests and religious sisters and
brothers you have? Where are all the holy men and women I sent to lead
America into a culture of life? Where are all the leaders I sent you who
were children after My own heart? Is this all the faith you have in Me
after all I have given you? 'Be earnest about it, therefore! Repent!' (Rv
3:19) Reform your lives and give Me your all."

Prayer: Father, You are looking for a return on all You have given to this
earth. I give you my all in return.

Promise: "Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance
but the Lord looks into the heart." —1 Sm 16:7

Praise: Melissa regretted her years of using artificial contraception and
opened her heart to receive all God had to give.

SCARED OUT OF YOUR SKIN?

"No, new wine is poured into new skins." —Mark 2:22

Before we accepted Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God by His terms, we had an
old nature, an "old self" (Eph 4:22). "We lived at the level of the flesh"
(Eph 2:3); we had "old skins" (Lk 5:37), that is, an old fleshly nature.
When we accepted Jesus, we laid "aside [our] former way of life and the
old self which deteriorates through illusion and desire, and [acquired] a
fresh, spiritual way of thinking" (Eph 4:22-23). We "put on that new"
skin, the new nature in Christ (Eph 4:24).

If you try to dabble in Christianity without radically changing your life,
beware! The Holy Spirit will not only see right through you; He will
"burst" right through you (see Lk 5:37). The abundant, new wine (Jn 2:7ff)
of the Spirit "will spill out" (Lk 5:37) and you will lose what little
spiritual life you thought you had (Mt 13:12). In fact, you will lose your
taste for the things of God. You will say, " I find the old wine better"
(Lk 5:39). That is to say, you will prefer your old lifestyle of sin to
the life in the Spirit you tried to dabble in. The same principle applies
to the new wine of Jesus' eucharistic cup. If you receive the new wine of
the Eucharist unworthily, that is, with old skin, you may be drinking a
judgment on yourself (1 Cor 11:29) and might even be bringing illness upon
yourself (1 Cor 11:30).

Jesus' plan is not to just add a little flavor and richness to the old
wine; rather, His new wine is so rich and explosive that our old skins
can't begin to contain it (Mk 2:22). His plan is good; it is for our
welfare, not for our destruction (Jer 29:11). Receive your new skin today!
Receive the rich new wine of life in the Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I am totally Yours. Do with me what You will.

Promise: "Obedience is better than sacrifice." —1 Sm 15:22

Praise: Feeling herself slip back into her "old ways," Maureen went to
Confession and received a new heart for Christ.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday JANUARY-JOY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=1/17/2010

"No more shall men call you 'Forsaken,' or your land 'Desolate,'
but you shall be called 'My Delight,' and your land 'Espoused.' " —Isaiah
62:4

In the beginning of this new year, we may have already lost the
joy of the feast of Christmas. Spiritually, we may have run out of
wine, as they did at the wedding feast of Cana (Jn 2:3). Yet once
again, Jesus will change the simple elements of daily life into the
fine wine of love, joy, and peace in the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22). No
matter how cold and blue January seems to us, Jesus will warm
our hearts with the fire of His love.

Life seems long and hard. We are weary and burdened
(see Mt 11:28). We are depressed and restless. Our pleasures
and distractions leave us more empty than ever. It's hard to face
the reality of January. The Super Bowl is the most compelling
distraction in January, but we know in our hearts that the Super
Bowl is merely a super-hype and just one more way to manipulate
consumers. The only way not to run out of the joy in life, the only
way to be happy and not just entertained, the only way to love
January is to love Jesus.

Jesus is still saying: "Come to Me, all you who are weary and find
life burdensome, and I will refresh you" (Mt 11:28). He alone can
give us life to the full (Jn 10:10).

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

PEACE AND CREATION

"PROPER ATTENTION"

"IMMENSE CONSEQUENCE"

Respect for creation is of immense consequence, not least
because "creation is the beginning and foundation of all God's
works, "(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 198) and its
preservation has now become essential for the pacific
coexistence of mankind.

DISRUPTED HARMONY

The harmony between the Creator, mankind and the created
world ... was disrupted by the sin of Adam and Eve, by man
and woman, who wanted to take the place of God and refused
to acknowledge that they were His creatures.

"CHILLING PROSPECTS"

The ecological problem must be dealt with not only because
of the chilling prospects of environmental degradation on the
horizon; the real motivation must be the quest for authentic
world-wide solidarity inspired by the values of charity, justice
and the common good.

JANUARY-JOY

"No more shall men call you 'Forsaken,' or your land 'Desolate,' but you

FOOD SERVICE

"They complained to His disciples, 'Why does He eat with such as these?'
" —Mark 2:16

Jesus ate with tax-collectors and sinners. With whom do you eat? Many of
us don't eat with anyone. We eat on the run. We drive-through or
microwave. Others eat with family and friends. This is good, but where are
the "beggars and the crippled, the lame and the blind," whom Jesus told us
to invite? (Lk 14:13) Jesus often used meals as an opportunity to
evangelize. Are we eating mostly with Christians and seldom with
unbelievers?

We must accept Jesus as Lord of everything, including our habits and
customs concerning those with whom we eat. When we let Jesus pick our
dinner guests, we often won't like the company, and others will also
complain (Mk 2:16). The only Person Who will be happy will be Jesus.
However, that's the meaning of life. We live not for ourselves but for
Him. We eat not for ourselves but for Him. We entertain not for ourselves
but for Him.

May our meals not be delicious or pleasant as much as evangelistic. "All
that matters is that in any and every way...Christ is being proclaimed!"
(Phil 1:18) At mealtime, may we win over to Jesus as many as possible (1
Cor 9:19).

Prayer: Father, change lifelong habits which hinder my evangelization.

Promise: "The Lord anoints you commander over His heritage. You are to
govern the Lord's people Israel, and to save them from the grasp of their
enemies round about." —1 Sm 10:1

Praise: At the soup kitchen where Ann volunteers, both physical and
spiritual nourishment are served.

THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM - One Bread, One Body, 1/15/2010

Friday, January 15, 2010

1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22, Psalm 89:16-19, Mark 2:1-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/011510.shtml

THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM

"All the elders of Israel came in a body to Samuel at Ramah and said to
him, 'Now that you are old, and your sons do not follow your example,
appoint a king over us, as other nations have.' " —1 Samuel 8:4-5

The Israelites had a problem replacing Samuel as their leader. They tried
to deal with this problem by inaugurating a new form of government for
themselves: a kingdom. This eventually made matters worse. We likewise
often try to deal with our problems by setting up a new system. We are
alarmed because of AIDS, so we develop a massive educational effort to
promote the lie of "safe sex." Our church needs more money, so we concoct
another fund-raiser. We feel depressed, so we develop an involved system
of distractions. These new structures often do nothing but make matters
worse.

Instead of distracting or deceiving ourselves with new systems, we should
go to the heart of the problem: our own heart. If we have humble, contrite
hearts, we will have victory over every problem — even those not our
fault. For those with the heart of Christ, God works all things — even bad
things — together for their good (Rm 8:28). Jesus' solution to all the
world's problems is not new worldly systems, but new hearts. The Lord
promises: "I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you,
taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts"
(Ez 36:26). Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Prayer: "Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours" (see
Mt 11:29).

Promise: "My son, your sins are forgiven." —Mk 2:5

Praise: Whenever Roger struggles internally with someone, he asks the Lord
to give him His heart for that person, and he feels Jesus soften his
heart.

video V-58.)

THE ABOMINABLE PRAYER

"When the ark of the Lord arrived in the camp, all Israel shouted so
loudly that the earth resounded." —1 Samuel 4:5

"Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men
on the battlefield" (1 Sm 4:2). "So the people sent to Shiloh and brought
from there the ark of the Lord of hosts" (1 Sm 4:4). After praying, the
Israelites went into battle again. This time, they suffered a much more
disastrous defeat in which thirty thousand of their soldiers were killed
(1 Sm 4:10). Their prayers seemed not only ineffective, but even to have
made matters worse.

The moral of this incident is not that prayer is sometimes bad; rather,
that prayer without repentance can do more harm than good. For example, if
we pray without forgiving others, we in effect curse ourselves. Even if we
don't say it, the Lord will take our prayer to mean: "Forgive us the wrong
we have done as we forgive those who wrong us" (Mt 6:12). Also, if we are
unjust and unrepentant, the Lord promises: "When you spread out your
hands, I close My eyes to you; though you pray the more, I will not
listen. Your hands are full of blood!" (Is 1:15)

When we don't repent, even our liturgical feasts and songs of worship are
hated by the Lord (Am 5:21, 23). The writer of Proverbs puts it bluntly:
"When one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an
abomination" (Prv 28:9). "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to
the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight" (Prv 15:8).
Repent, pray, and please the Lord.

Prayer: Father, may I not merely pay You lip-service (Mt 15:8). "A heart
contrite and humbled, O God, You will not spurn" (Ps 51:19).

Promise: "Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out His hand, touched Him, and
said: 'I do will it. Be cured.' The leprosy left him then and there, and
he was cured." —Mk 1:41-42

Praise: When the Smiths repented and stopped using artificial
contraception, their prayer life changed for the better.
