THE DEVIL AND INTELLECTUAL PRIDE - One Bread, One Body, 10/1/2016

Saturday, October 1, 2016, St. Therese of the Child Jesus

Job 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17, Psalm 119:66, 71, 75, 91, 125, 130, Luke 10:17-24

THE DEVIL AND INTELLECTUAL PRIDE

"Many prophets and kings wished to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." -Luke 10:24

Because we are Jesus' followers, "demons are subject to us" (Lk 10:17). We can shoot down Satan to fall from the sky like lightning (Lk 10:18). We can "tread on snakes and scorpions and all the forces of the enemy" (Lk 10:19). We can "quickly crush Satan under" our feet (Rm 16:20).

However, few Christians are aware of their authority over the devil or even of their need for that authority. Our authority, as well as other aspects of God's plan of salvation, is "hidden from the learned and the clever," but "revealed to the merest children" (Lk 10:21). Therefore, the learned and the clever sometimes laugh at the supposedly primitive ideas of the common people about the devil. Expect to be scorned if you talk about the devil as if he were real.

The devil is "a liar and the father of lies" (Jn 8:44). He lies about his own existence. He spreads confusion by promoting intellectual pride. This pride is shown in the rejection of traditional Christian teaching and a snobbish attitude toward the way common people think and talk. Nonetheless, what the Church and the Bible have taught for centuries concerning the devil will always be true.

Prayer: Father, I humbly submit myself to the traditional teaching of the Church.

Promise: "The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones." -Jb 42:12

Praise: St. Therese was a zealous and dedicated intercessor, and especially devoted herself to pray for priests.

HATE THE SIN AND LOVE THE CHURCH OF SINNERS

"Then Job answered the Lord and said: 'Behold, I am of little account.' " -Job 40:3-4

God's ways and thoughts are as high above our ways and thoughts as the heavens are above the earth (Is 55:8-9). Even the wisest people know nothing compared to God. We all must say with Job: "Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer You? I put my hand over my mouth" (Jb 40:4).

Nevertheless, the infinite, all-holy, almighty Lord has decided to speak through His Church made of weak, limited human beings. Moreover, He amazingly exalts His Church by announcing: "He who hears you, hears Me. He who rejects you, rejects Me. And he who rejects Me, rejects Him Who sent Me" (Lk 10:16). The Lord has made His Church "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15). He has even made the Church His Body (see Eph 1:22-23) and His bride (see Eph 5:25ff). The Lord loves the Church, gave His life for the Church (Eph 5:25), and exalts the Church.

The Lord expects His disciples also to love the Church, live in the Church, and die for the Church. We are naturally turned off when we see the Church so full of sinners. The Church on earth is anything but naturally lovable. Nonetheless, the Holy Spirit graces us to do the humanly impossible - to love a very human Church instituted and exalted by God. Do the required and the impossible. Love the Church.

Prayer: Father, like St. Francis, grace me to love and rebuild the Church.

Promise: "O Lord, You have probed me and You know me; You know when I sit and when I stand; You understand my thoughts from afar." -Ps 139:1-2

Praise: St. Jerome loved sinners so much he promoted Scripture, piety, martyrs, relics, clerical celibacy, and refuted heresies. He fiercely spent his energies for love of God and the Church.

LIVES WHICH NEED ANGELS

Jesus "went on to tell them, 'I solemnly assure you, you shall see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.' " -John 1:51

The Lord loves you perfectly, and He wants to show His love for you by sending Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and other angels to be more active in your life. For angels to be very active in our lives, we must have lives which fit into the job descriptions of archangels and angels. We need lives of discipleship, holiness, and evangelization. We need to love so deeply and courageously that we are worthy of being persecuted. Angels are especially active in helping persecuted Christians (see Acts 12:7ff; 5:19; Lk 22:43). In effect, we need the Holy Spirit to be as active as possible in our lives.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth (Jn 14:17). He is "Power from on high" (Lk 24:49; see also Acts 1:8). He produces the fruit of love, joy, and peace (Gal 5:22). Lives teeming with truth, power, and love are occasions made for angels. When the Holy Spirit is moving, Michael wields his sword, Gabriel announces God's message, and Raphael guides and heals. When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, the angelic spirits have a place to work. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, in this Year of Mercy, may archangels and angels need to be extremely active.

Promise: "I will give thanks to You, O Lord, with all my heart, for You have heard the words of my mouth; in the presence of the angels I will sing Your praise." -Ps 138:1-2

Praise: St. Gabriel the Archangel was the first creature in recorded history to speak the name of Jesus (Lk 1:31).

Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092816.cfm

QUITE A FOLLOWING

"Someone said to Him, 'I will be Your follower wherever You go.' " -Luke 9:57

The essence of the Christian life is to follow Christ - not on our terms, but on His. In following Him, Jesus calls us to make a total, self-sacrificing commitment - not even to expect a roof over our heads (see Lk 9:58). He also expects an immediate commitment - no delays (see Lk 9:59-61). Finally, following Jesus is forever. When we put our hands to the plow and begin to work for the harvest, we must not look back but persevere (Lk 9:62).

In a world of selfishness, a total, self-sacrificing, immediate, forever commitment seems unreasonable. It is actually trans-reasonable, that is, not against reason but beyond it. The Lord's ways and thoughts are far beyond our ways and thoughts (Is 55:8-9). "He does great things past finding out, marvelous things beyond reckoning" (Jb 9:10). Therefore, to follow the Lord God is to walk in unknown regions and for unknown reasons. Following Jesus is walking by faith, not by sight (2 Cor 5:7).

Why would we give our all to Jesus and not even understand all of what we're doing? Love is the only reason for following Jesus on His terms. Jesus is saying to us now: " 'Follow Me,' if you love Me" (see Jn 21:19).

Prayer: Jesus, may I love You so much that I'll follow You to death.

Promise: "I, O Lord, cry out to You; with my morning prayer I wait upon You." -Ps 88:14

Praise: St. Lawrence Ruiz, husband and father of three, was the first Filipino to be canonized.

LIFE LINES

"Why is light given to the toilers, and life to the bitter in spirit?" -Job 3:20

Nearly all of us can identify in some way with Job's misery. Sometimes life is bitter (Jb 3:20) and full of drudgery (Jb 7:1). Relief eludes us (Jb 3:13), and death seems better than any hidden treasure the future could possibly hold (Jb 3:21). Then it gets worse. We "have forgotten what happiness is" (Lam 3:17; Jb 7:7).

When life is no longer worth living, then we've forgotten what life really is. To be more specific, we've forgotten Who Life is. Jesus is Life (Jn 11:25; 14:6). Because Jesus is Life, our lives are full of meaning, power, and hope, no matter how miserable our circumstances. Because we are alive, we Christians carry in our bodies the life of Jesus (2 Cor 4:10). His life is revealed in our bodies, even though we are being delivered to death (2 Cor 4:11).

Jesus enables us to become better instead of bitter. On the cross, Jesus overcame all the bitterness and misery that ever existed. He understands our pain and misery far better than we do (Heb 2:17-18). Jesus, the Deliverer (Ps 18:3), sometimes rescues us from "the pit" (Ps 40:2-3). If He doesn't rescue us from "the bottom of the pit" (Ps 88:7), then He does something even better: He comes into the pit with us and shares His life with us (Ps 23:4; Mt 1:23, 28:20). We Christians believe that it's far better to be in the pit with Jesus than to be comfortable without Him (see Ps 84:11). With Jesus the Life by our side, we have life "to the full" (Jn 10:10).

Prayer: Jesus, "to me, 'life' means" You (Phil 1:21). Thank You for the gift of my life.

Promise: Jesus "firmly resolved to proceed toward Jerusalem." -Lk 9:51

Praise: St. Vincent, who converted his slavemaster, lived life to the full through his countless acts of generosity and love.

Job 1:6-22, Psalm 17:1-3, 6-7, Luke 9:46-50

THE ONE-TWO PUNCH

"The Lord said to Satan, 'Behold, all that he has is in your power.' " -Job 1:12

Satan is the father of lies (Jn 8:44). He is the expert in tempting us. For example, he tried to get Job to say something "disrespectful of God" (Jb 1:22) and to curse God (Jb 2:9). Job, however, did not fall for Satan's series of temptations. First, Satan had the Sabeans steal Job's oxen and asses (Jb 1:14-15). In our economy, this would have been a theft of several thousand dollars worth of property. Next, lightning struck and destroyed more of Job's property, killing some of his employees (Jb 1:16). If Job hadn't forgiven the Sabeans and placed the first catastrophe in God's hands, he might have blamed God for the second catastrophe. This would have turned his heart from God and planted a seed which would have grown into a sin of disrespect and cursing against God.

After this one-two punch failed, Satan tried it again on Job, but with greater intensity. The Chaldeans robbed Job of camels which were probably worth much more than Job's oxen and asses (Jb 1:17). These Chaldeans also murdered several of Job's employees (Jb 1:17). If Job had hated these Chaldeans for their crimes, he probably would have sinned and been knocked out when he heard the devastating news that all ten of his children had been killed in an accident (Jb 1:18-19). Doesn't bad news often come in pairs or bunches? Don't we often get the worst news when we already feel bad? That's why we must turn to God, forgive, and shake off the first punch before the second one hits.

Prayer: Father, give me wisdom and love so that I will not be outwitted by the evil one (see 2 Cor 2:11).

Promise: "Whoever welcomes this little child on My account welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him Who sent Me; for the least one among you is the greatest." -Lk 9:48

Praise: Sts. Cosmas & Damian used their giftedness in medicine to minister to God's sick and wounded free of charge.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE GULF WAR
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=9/25/2016

"Between you and us there is fixed a great abyss, so that those who might wish to cross from
here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross from your side to us." -Luke 16:26

The rich man, traditionally known as Dives, spent eternity staring across a great chasm
separating himself from the Lord (Lk 16:26). How ironic! Dives spent his lifetime constructing
this chasm (or gulf) to isolate himself from the poor. Now this gulf, built day by day during
his life, could not be undone in eternity.

In the USA, many gulfs have been built to isolate the not-so-poor from the poor. We have
suburbs, which the poor can't reach because of distance and low income. We have expensive
colleges and professional training, which often serve to exclude those without sufficient
income. The high cost of medical insurance often excludes the poor from the treatment they need.

This is not meant so much to criticize those who enjoy these things as it is to make the point
that those who have a gulf between themselves and the poor must work harder than ever to bridge
that gulf. Charity obliges those with a sufficiency to share with those without
(see 2 Cor 8:14). "Woe to the complacent" who do not reach out to the Lazaruses in their midst
(Am 6:1).

King Jesus will judge us on our outreach to the poor (see Mt 25:35ff). All Christians are to "be
mindful of the poor" (Gal 2:10) and even have "a preferential love" for the poor
(Catechism, 2448). Reach out to the poor. Bridge the gulf now, before you have to stare across
it forever.

Prayer: Jesus, You made Yourself poor for My sake (2 Cor 8:9). Give me Your heart, mind, love,
and ministry to the poor.

Promise: "Happy he [...who] secures justice for the oppressed, [and] gives food to the hungry."
-Ps 146:5, 7

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who is meek and humble of heart, yet Lord of the universe and Ruler of all
creation. Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2016-09.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MISSION AND MERCY

"DISTINCT LIGHT"

The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, which the Church is celebrating, casts a distinct light on
World Mission Sunday 2016 (October 16): it invites us to consider the missio ad gentes as a
great, immense work of mercy, both spiritual and material... All are invited to "go out" as
missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience
in order to bring the message of God's tenderness and compassion to the entire human family...

"DEEP JOY"

When mercy encounters a person, it brings deep joy to the Father's heart; for from the beginning
the Father has lovingly turned towards the most vulnerable, because His greatness and power are
revealed precisely in His capacity to identify with the young, the marginalized and the
oppressed ... He is a kind, caring and faithful God who is close to those in need, especially the
poor; He involves Himself tenderly in human reality just as a father and mother do in the lives
of their children...

LEARN TO LOVE

When we welcome and follow Jesus by means of the Gospel and sacraments, we can, with the help of
the Holy Spirit, become merciful as our heavenly Father is merciful; we can learn to love as He
loves us and make of our lives, a free gift, a sign of His goodness...

THE GULF WAR

"Between you and us there is fixed a great abyss, so that those who might wish to cross from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross from your side to us." -Luke 16:26

The rich man, traditionally known as Dives, spent eternity staring across a great chasm separating himself from the Lord (Lk 16:26). How ironic! Dives spent his lifetime constructing this chasm (or gulf) to isolate himself from the poor. Now this gulf, built day by day during his life, could not be undone in eternity.

In the USA, many gulfs have been built to isolate the not-so-poor from the poor. We have suburbs, which the poor can't reach because of distance and low income. We have expensive colleges and professional training, which often serve to exclude those without sufficient income. The high cost of medical insurance often excludes the poor from the treatment they need.

This is not meant so much to criticize those who enjoy these things as it is to make the point that those who have a gulf between themselves and the poor must work harder than ever to bridge that gulf. Charity obliges those with a sufficiency to share with those without (see 2 Cor 8:14). "Woe to the complacent" who do not reach out to the Lazaruses in their midst (Am 6:1).

King Jesus will judge us on our outreach to the poor (see Mt 25:35ff). All Christians are to "be mindful of the poor" (Gal 2:10) and even have "a preferential love" for the poor (Catechism, 2448). Reach out to the poor. Bridge the gulf now, before you have to stare across it forever.

Prayer: Jesus, You made Yourself poor for My sake (2 Cor 8:9). Give me Your heart, mind, love, and ministry to the poor.

Promise: "Happy he [...who] secures justice for the oppressed, [and] gives food to the hungry." -Ps 146:5, 7

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who is meek and humble of heart, yet Lord of the universe and Ruler of all creation. Alleluia!

DESTROYING DEATH (1 Cor 15:26) - One Bread, One Body, 9/24/2016

Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:8, Psalm 90:3-6, 12-14, 17, Luke 9:43-45

DESTROYING DEATH (1 Cor 15:26)

"You make an end of them in their sleep." -Psalm 90:5

The author of Ecclesiastes, living centuries before the revelation of Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25), is naturally pessimistic about life. For example, he goes on and on about growing old. Then he speaks of death in six ways. Death is like going home, a snapped cord, a broken bowl, a shattered pitcher, a pulley fallen into a well, and dust returning to earth (Eccl 12:5-7). It isn't enough for him to say that we will die. He seems obligated to belabor the point.

Death, for the author of Ecclesiastes, almost ruins life. Death has a deadly sting; it is victorious over life (cf 1 Cor 15:55). Because of the overshadowing influence of death, we are tempted to trivialize life by eating and drinking, for tomorrow we die (1 Cor 15:32; Wis 2:5-6ff). Living for pleasure makes us slaves - slaves of sin through fear of death our whole lives long (Heb 2:15). Because of death, we are tempted to give "allegiance to the present age and to the prince of the air, that spirit who is even now at work among the rebellious. All of us were once of their company; we lived at the level of the flesh, following every whim and fancy, and so by nature deserved God's wrath like the rest" (Eph 2:2-3). Death can turn our lives into living deaths (see 1 Jn 3:14).

The only way to de-fang death is to believe in and live totally for Jesus, "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). Jesus alone holds "the keys of death and the nether world" (Rv 1:18). In Jesus, "death is swallowed up in victory" (1 Cor 15:54). Praise Jesus forever!

Prayer: Father, may my dying day be the happiest day of my life.

Promise: "Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart." -Ps 90:12

Praise: "Thanks be to God Who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Cor 15:57).

CROWDED CONDITIONS - One Bread, One Body, 9/23/2016

Friday, September 23, 2016, St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Ecclesiastes 3:1-11, Psalm 144:1-4, Luke 9:18-22
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092316.cfm

CROWDED CONDITIONS

Jesus "put the question to them, 'Who do the crowds say that I am?' " -Luke 9:18

Before Jesus asked His disciples: "Who do you say that I am?" (Lk 9:20), He asked: "Who do the crowds say that I am?" (Lk 9:18) Jesus did this to show we must separate ourselves from the crowd if we are to truly acknowledge Him as the Messiah, Lord, and God (see Lk 9:20).

Crowd-pleasers aren't God-pleasers. Jesus is not popular; He is a "sign of contradiction" (Lk 2:34 our transl.). The crowd took part in crucifying Jesus, and it hasn't changed. Therefore, we are enemies of Christ and His cross if we are a crowd-pleaser, set on the things of the world, those things the crowd has always run after (Phil 3:18-19; see also Jas 4:4).

When we step out of line, the crowd sees this as our judgment against it (Wis 2:12). This makes us unpopular, then rejected, and finally hated and persecuted (see Jn 15:19). This helps us understand Jesus' words to Peter after his profession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus said: "The Son of Man...must first endure many sufferings, be rejected by the elders, the high priests and the scribes, and be put to death, and then be raised up on the third day" (Lk 9:22). Believing in Jesus means not being part of the crowd, which means suffering as Jesus suffered.

Don't get crowded out of life in Christ. It's better to be persecuted by the crowd than to be persecuting in the crowd. Follow Jesus; leave the crowd behind.

Prayer: Father, may I never cry out "Crucify Him, crucify Him," no matter how many people are yelling it (see Mt 27:22-23).

Promise: "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war; my Refuge and my Fortress, my Stronghold, my Deliverer, my Shield, in Whom I trust." -Ps 144:1-2

Praise: St. Pio ministered to the crowds by often hearing confessions for 10-12 hours each day. He said, "Remember that one does not win the battle without prayer. The choice is yours."

THE MISERY OF MONEY, POWER, AND SEX - One Bread, One Body, 9/22/2016

Thursday, September 22, 2016

Ecclesiastes 1:2-11, Psalm 90:3-6, 12-14, 17, Luke 9:7-9
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092216.cfm

THE MISERY OF MONEY, POWER, AND SEX

"Vanity of vanities!" -Ecclesiastes 1:2

The book of Ecclesiastes is traditionally attributed to Solomon because its author, Qoheleth, is identified as David's son (Eccl 1:1). This association makes the message of Ecclesiastes more poignant. Qoheleth, or possibly Solomon, announced that everything is vanity, work and money are useless (Eccl 1:3), "there is nothing man can say" (Eccl 1:8), and all our entertainments are empty (Eccl 1:8).

This is quite a statement for anyone to make, but it's even more significant coming from the mouth of the wisest, richest man in the world. Most people think that someone with 700 wives and 300 concubines would have enough excitement to make life at least palatable (see 1 Kgs 11:3). Yet the one who had it all admitted he had nothing: vanity.

Is there any hope? Our hope is in Jesus alone. "We lived at the level of the flesh, following every whim and fancy, and so by nature deserved God's wrath like the rest. But God is rich in mercy; because of His great love for us He brought us to life with Christ" (Eph 2:3-5). "There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rm 8:1). " 'Life' means Christ" (Phil 1:21).

Prayer: Father, "teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart" (Ps 90:12).

Promise: "Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants!" -Ps 90:13

Praise: Finding no rest in TV or the Internet, Laura spent the day with the Lord and found refreshment.

A TRAITOR CONVERTS! - One Bread, One Body, 9/21/2016

Wednesday, September 21, 2016, St. Matthew

Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13, Psalm 19:2-5, Matthew 9:9-13
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092116.cfm

A TRAITOR CONVERTS!

"Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his post where taxes were collected." -Matthew 9:9

Matthew was a tax collector. To a Jew, this was one of the most despicable jobs possible (see Mt 18:17). Tax collectors usually perpetrated violence and injustice against the poor. Worse than that, however, they sold out to the enemy, the Romans. Moreover, their association with the Romans made them unclean. Thus, tax collectors gave up their participation in the Jewish community and its worship.

Because of all this, a good Jew would not greet or associate with a tax collector. To eat with a tax collector and call him to become a disciple would be almost blasphemous to a good Jew. Therefore, Jesus' calling of Matthew to become a disciple was either an astounding revelation of God's grace or nothing less than an abomination before God.

Matthew's calling and conversion is a radical statement that:
* God can convert the hardest heart (see 1 Tm 1:15-16).
* "Nothing is impossible with God" (Lk 1:37).
* "Mercy triumphs over judgment" (Jas 2:13).
* Grace surpasses sin (Rm 5:20).
* God chooses the despised (1 Cor 1:28).
* Where there's life, there's hope.

Rejoice, for today is the feast of St. Matthew, a day of mercy and hope.

Prayer: Father, fill me with hope because of Matthew's conversion.

Promise: "I plead with you, then, as a prisoner for the Lord, to live a life worthy of the calling you have received." -Eph 4:1

Praise: Once St. Matthew was disdained and excluded for his tax collecting, but today he is acclaimed and honored for his soul collecting.

WATER FOUNTAIN

"Like a stream is the king's heart in the hand of the Lord; wherever it pleases Him, He directs it." -Proverbs 21:1

The Lord wants our hearts to become like water in His hand. With our hand, we can sprinkle, splash, stir, hold, throw, or pour water. Water offers little resistance. We can almost do anything we want with it.

Is your heart like water in God's hand, or is it like ice or glue? Will you let the Lord pour you out as a libation (Phil 2:17; 2 Tm 4:6), or are you only a drip? Can you be splashed and sprinkled, or are you so set in your ways that you are like molasses? Will you let the Lord throw you into anything at any time, or are you sticky? When God stirs you, do you thank and praise Him, or do you complain? Will you let the Lord hold you, or are you leaky?

When we totally give our lives to Jesus, we "accept the gift of life-giving water" (Rv 22:17). When we receive the Holy Spirit, from within us "rivers of living water" flow (Jn 7:38). The water Jesus gives us becomes "a fountain" within us "leaping up to provide eternal life" (Jn 4:14). We have rivers of leaping, living water within us. Be like water in God's hand.

Prayer: Father, make me humble and docile to Your touch.

Promise: Jesus said: "My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and act upon it." -Lk 8:21

Praise: The Korean martyrs did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives for He Who is Life. Their martyrdom laid the foundation of faith for the Church in Korea.

Proverbs 3:27-34, Psalm 15:2-5, Luke 8:16-18

PRIVILEGED POSITION

"No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel basket or under a bed; he puts it on a lampstand so that whoever comes in can see it." -Luke 8:16

Jesus commanded us to put His light on the lampstand and proclaim the gospel to the whole world (Lk 8:16). He also said His Word would get out to people even if we failed to proclaim it. "There is nothing hidden that will not be exposed, nothing concealed that will not be known and brought to light" (Lk 8:17).

Jesus can do the job without us. He calls us not so much because He needs us but because we need Him. Evangelization is more than our obligation; it's our privilege. What greater honor is there than to serve God Himself! With the psalmist, we should pray: "I had rather one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked" (Ps 84:11).

When we serve and pray, work and suffer for the Lord, we have done Him no favor. He has favored us by letting us be part of His kingdom. "When you have done all you have been commanded to do, say, 'We are useless servants. We have done no more than our duty' " (Lk 17:10). Thank the Lord for the privilege of living and dying for Him.

Prayer: Jesus, why did You die for me? Am I really worth that much to You? I love You.

Promise: "When He is dealing with the arrogant, He is stern, but to the humble He shows kindness." -Prv 3:34

Praise: St. Januarius was martyred about 305 A.D. The blood that he shed for the love of Jesus is still a sign of God's great power.

PM eNewsletter 25th Sunday in Ordinary time

September 18th, 25th Sunday in ordinary time

This week, Jesus, we celebrate the feast of the apostle Matthew and St. Padre Pio.

Jesus, Matthew gave us a gospel that teaches us so much about You and why You did what You did.

So Christ, we thank you for Your apostles and the leadership they have given us throughout
the history of Your church.

We also thank You for St. Padre Pio, a modern saint, who gave all that he possibly could and
loved You totally.

You gave him the stigmata, and showed us how in spite of difficulty, we could still work for
You and love You as he did.

He was so gifted with gifts to benefit others.

Help us, oh! Christ, to be willing to give everything up to follow You, and be willing to give
all to help others.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday ARE YOU SAVED?
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=9/18/2016

"Prayer of this kind is good, and God our Savior is pleased with it, for He wants all men to
be saved." -1 Timothy 2:3-4

The Lord wants us to pray that the world be governed so as to promote the best conditions for
accepting His salvation. He wants all to be saved. He even became a human being and died on
the cross so that all could be saved. "The grace of God has appeared, offering salvation to
all" (Ti 2:11).

What must we do to be saved from sin, Satan, hell, slavery, self-hatred, and darkness? What
must we do to be saved for love, evangelization, peace, Christian community, freedom, victory,
and everlasting life? We must believe in the Lord Jesus (Acts 16:31). Then we and all our
households will be saved (Acts 16:31). We are saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8). The Lord
"saved us; not because of any righteous deeds we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved
us through the baptism of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit He lavished on
us through Jesus Christ our Savior" (Ti 3:5-6).

Renew your Baptism. Repent and go to Confession. Live by faith. Be saved. Love the Savior and
live for Jesus, Whose name means "Yahweh saves."

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your saving grace and for the Savior, Jesus. I adore You, Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit.

Promise: "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other or
be attentive to the one and despise the other. You cannot give yourself to God and money."
-Lk 16:13

Praise: Praise Jesus, our Redeemer Who lives! Praise Jesus, our Savior, Lord, and God Almighty.
Alleluia!

WORD WORK - One Bread, One Body, 9/17/2016

Saturday, September 17, 2016, St. Robert Bellarmine

1 Corinthians 15:35-37, 42-49, Psalm 56:10-14, Luke 8:4-15
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/091716.cfm

WORD WORK

"This is the meaning of the parable...hear the word in a spirit of openness, retain it, and bear fruit through perseverance." -Luke 8:11, 15

Ground is valued by its fertility, that is, how productive and fruitful it is. Jesus tells us exactly how to bear fruit:
* "Hear the word in a spirit of openness" (Lk 8:15). To hear the Word of God, we must eliminate any background noise. We must cultivate a spirit of openness. Just like a farmer turns over the ground by plowing it, so we turn our lives upside down - make any changes necessary - so the seed of God's Word can sink deep into our hearts.
* "Retain it" (Lk 8:15). A gardener retains the seed in the soil by burying the seed with a covering of dirt. In this way, the wind can't blow it away and birds can't eat it. Likewise, we hide the Word in our hearts (Ps 119:11, KJV), treasuring it and refusing to let it go. We meditate on it always (Ps 1:2) and make it part of our very being.
* "Bear fruit through perseverance" (Lk 8:15). We do not bear the fruit; God's Word does that. However, we must persevere in cooperating with the Holy Spirit in dispensing His Word (Mt 24:45), teaching it, and overcoming our tendencies to slack off from sharing His Word.

Let's work hard to be rich ground for Jesus. "If we do not relax our efforts, in due time we shall reap our harvest" (Gal 6:9).

Prayer: Father, may I act in a manner appropriate for one who has heard the Word of Almighty God today.

Promise: "To you the mysteries of the reign of God have been confided." -Lk 8:10

Praise: Finding opposition on all sides, St. Robert worked tirelessly to spread truth. His prayerfulness, humility, and charity marked him as a saint.

LIVING THE CHANGE - One Bread, One Body, 9/16/2016

Friday, September 16, 2016, Pope St. Cornelius, St. Cyprian

1 Corinthians 15:12-20, Psalm 17:1, 6-8, 15, Luke 8:1-3
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/091616.cfm

LIVING THE CHANGE

"We should then be exposed as false witnesses of God." -1 Corinthians 15:15

The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the central event in our faith. Our response to Jesus' Resurrection makes a total difference in the world around us. If we do not live as a risen people, living a risen life to the full (Jn 10:10), whose entire existence is transformed, then we look no different from those in the world.

Satan couldn't stop Jesus from rising from the dead. So now Satan and his demons are reduced to trying to stop people from living the risen life in Christ. If he can get them to stop living "the radical newness of [their] Christian life that comes from Baptism" (Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, 10, Pope St. John Paul II), Satan has accomplished much of his objective. When Christians live a listless, faithless life, the world sees that resurrection makes no practical difference and decides that this life is all there is.

However, when we Christians allow the Resurrection of Jesus to pierce our hearts, encounter the risen Jesus, receive the Holy Spirit, and change our lifestyles to be risen, the change cannot be hidden. The world may not believe, but they will not be able to miss the joy and the changes. In Jesus, we renounce extra-marital sex, greed for money, and sinful pleasures. We radiate joy, love, peace, and courage. The world will come to believe if we live like we believe in Jesus risen.

Prayer: Father, may I "rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 3:8).

Promise: "As it is, Christ is now raised from the dead." -1 Cor 15:20

Praise: Once opposed for his teaching, St. Cornelius preached that repentant sinners should be re-instated in the Sacraments.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

OUR LADY OF FORGIVENESS

"Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother." -John 19:25

Because Mary is honored as our Lady of Sorrows, she is our Lady of Forgiveness. She forgave the innkeeper who refused to give her a room in which to have her Baby and forced her to give birth in a stable (Lk 2:7).

Our Lady of Sorrows forgave Herod for attempting to kill her Baby and forcing her and her family to flee to Egypt in the middle of the night (Mt 2:13-14).

Mary forgave Joseph for his sins. Everyone in the Holy Family was sinless except for Joseph. Mary, like many wives, might have felt that the family problems were always Joseph's fault. In her case, she would have been right.

Our Lady of Sorrows forgave her relatives for rejecting Jesus and saying He was out of His mind (Mk 3:21).

Mary forgave Jesus' apostles for abandoning Him, Peter for denying Him three times, and Judas for selling and betraying Jesus. Mary forgave Pontius Pilate and the religious leaders who hated Jesus and had Him crucified.

As she stood at the foot of the cross, Our Lady of Sorrows forgave the bad thief and those who mocked Jesus as He hung in agony. Our Lady of Sorrows has forgiven us for being accomplices to Jesus' death through our sins.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, mercy!

Promise: "Son though He was, He learned obedience from what He suffered; and when perfected, He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." -Heb 5:8-9

Praise: "At the cross her station keeping. Stood the mournful Mother weeping. Close to Jesus to the last."
