MODIFIED PAGANISM
"You must no longer live as the pagans do." —Ephesians 4:17

Paul started the Ephesian church by leading twelve men to Christ and to new life in the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:5-7). A few years later, Paul observed that the Ephesians had lost their early love for Christ (cf Rv 2:4). Paul likely could tell this because the lifestyle of the Ephesian Christians had become merely modified paganism. Paul maintained that when the Ephesians “learned Christ” (Eph 4:20), they should have learned a new lifestyle by laying aside their former way of life (Eph 4:22) and acquiring “a fresh, spiritual way of thinking” (Eph 4:23). Paul assumed that commitment to Christ entailed a radical change of lifestyle.

Many Christians today can relate to the Ephesians. It’s common for Christians to buy the same things, watch the same programs, have the same recreation, and make the same investments as “good” non-believers. Many Christians avoid the grosser aspects of a pagan lifestyle. Nevertheless, their lifestyle is more appropriately described as “modified pagan” rather than “radically Christian.” We must repent, be crucified to the world (Gal 6:14), and count “all else rubbish so that Christ may be [our] Wealth” (Phil 3:8).

Prayer: Father, may my lifestyle make no sense apart from Jesus' lordship and divinity.

Promise: "You should not be working for perishable food but for food that remains unto life eternal, food which the Son of Man will give you." —Jn 6:27

Praise: Risen Jesus, I earnestly want to follow You. "I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living" (Ps 27:13).

GOOD CLEAN FUN? - One Bread, One Body, 07/31/2021

Psalm 67:2-3, 5, 7-8
Matthew 14:1-12

GOOD CLEAN FUN?
"Then on Herod's birthday Herodias' daughter performed a dance before the court which delighted Herod so much that he swore..." —Matthew 14:6-7

If you had asked Herod whether his birthday party was for God or for Satan, he would likely have answered that it wasn’t fanatically religious or demonically possessed. He would maintain that the party was not that pious and not that evil, just “good clean fun,” morally neutral.

Most people think much of what they do is morally neutral because they mistakenly think they can be neutral. However, there is no such thing as neutrality. The devil is real, powerful, and unscrupulous, and if you don’t choose to join Jesus’ army, Satan could draft you into his army through trickery and playing on your fears. We can’t stop him because he is so much more powerful than us.

The only way to escape Satan’s slavery and hell is to turn to Jesus for salvation, deliverance, and protection. If we continue to believe the myth of neutrality, we will repeatedly be surprised when our “good clean fun” results in violence, sin, and death. We will wonder why so few Herodiases, Hitlers, and Stalins have so much freedom to destroy and pervert the world. Neutrality is a euphemism for complicity with the devil. If we’re not with Jesus, we’re against Him (Lk 11:23).

Prayer: Jesus, by Your power, may I attack the gates of hell.

Promise: "The fiftieth year you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when every one of you shall return to his own property." —Lv 25:10

Praise: St. Ignatius was a mystic. He had a particular devotion to the Holy Trinity and the Holy Eucharist. He founded the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, "for the greater glory of God."

MUCH TOO MUCH - One Bread, One Body, 07/30/2021

MUCH TOO MUCH
"They were filled with amazement." —Matthew 13:54

We want God to help us, bless us, and be there when we need Him. However, He wants us to help Him, bless Him, and be there when He needs us. We want to tell God what to do, but He wants to tell us what to do and take over our lives. That’s much more than we had in mind.

Like the people of Nazareth, we find Jesus “altogether too much” for us (Mt 13:57). If only Jesus would stay in His place, come when He’s called, speak only when spoken to, and visit occasionally...

But, no, He wants to run our entire lives and be with us constantly. We can’t go anywhere without Him tagging along. We can’t go on a date, watch TV, or even go to the bathroom without Him being there, all the time. We might feel like dwelling on sexual fantasies, committing sexual sins, or getting high. Yet with Jesus there all the time, we can’t have any “fun.”

We have no privacy. We can’t do as we please. Jesus is too much. He’s too concerned about our actions. He spends too much time with us. Twenty-four hours a day, every day, is excessive. Jesus refuses to be Lord of anything in our lives unless He can be Lord of everything.

Is He asking too much?

Prayer: Jesus, because You died for me, I give my life to You unreservedly.

Promise: "When you come into the land which I am giving you, and reap your harvest, you shall bring a sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest." —Lv 23:10

Praise: St. Peter Chrysologus was Bishop of Ravenna during the Fifth Century. Many of his sermons have survived and can be read today. He endorsed learning as an obligation to develop God-given talents.

“IT’S GOD’S FAULT” - One Bread, One Body, 07/29/2021

Thursday, July 29, 2021, St. Martha

"IT'S GOD'S FAULT"
"Lord, are You not concerned that my sister has left me to do the household tasks all alone? Tell her to help me." —Luke 10:40

St. Martha blamed Jesus, that is, God, for not telling Mary to help her. We also blame God for not stopping tragedies and for not doing what we want. Martha seemed close to blaming God again for not preventing the death of her brother Lazarus (Jn 11:21). However, she refrained from blaming God, started believing God (Jn 11:27), and saw the glory of God as her brother was raised from the dead and unbound by Jesus (Jn 11:44).

When your output exceeds your input, then your upkeep becomes your downfall. In other words, when we try to do more than we have received the grace from God to do, the living of our everyday lives will cause us to break down. Moreover, when we are blaming God, we set up an obstacle which prevents us from freely receiving His grace, His input into our lives. (We don’t receive much from people that we blame.) Therefore, we must repent of blaming God, or we will fall apart.

Don’t blame God. He alone is innocent. Thank and love God. He alone is worthy. Receive His grace. See His glory.

Prayer: Father, I will take the plank out of my eye and not criticize You (Mt 7:5).

Promise: "I had rather one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere." ––Ps 84:11

Praise: Like many of us, St. Martha often let the cares of the world obscure her vision. But in the end, she was graced with the most significant of titles –– Saint.

HALO - One Bread, One Body, 07/28/2021

HALO
"Then the Israelites would see that the skin of Moses' face was radiant; so he would again put the veil over his face until he went in to converse with the Lord." —Exodus 34:35

Moses had a halo after talking to God. People had to wear sunglasses when they looked at him. You could get a tan just sitting in the same room with Moses. The man was a human lightning bug.

When we talk to God, do we light up like Moses did? Does communion with the Lord have a visible effect on us? We may not glow, but do we at least smile? Does the Son-light affect us more than the sun-light?

Jesus is the Light of the world; in Him there is no darkness (Jn 8:12; 1 Jn 1:5). When we walk in His light, we not only are in the light but we “are light in the Lord” (Eph 5:8). As followers of Jesus, we too are “the light of the world” (Mt 5:14). Light naturally shines so as to give “light to all in the house. In the same way, your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to your heavenly Father” (Mt 5:15-16).

It’s natural for you to have a halo because you are light; Jesus the Light dwells in you, and you are walking in His light. Rise and shine!

Prayer: Jesus, because of You may I smile even amid bad circumstances.

Promise: "The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant's search for fine pearls. When he found one really valuable pearl, he went back and put up for sale all that he had and bought it." —Mt 13:45-46

Praise: Gloria's smile, even as a young widow and mother, radiates the love of Jesus and brightens the lives of many others.

"FACE-TIME"
"The Lord used to speak to Moses face-to-face." —Exodus 33:11

What an indescribable picture! Almighty God and a human being speak face-to-face and Moses does not die (cf Ex 24:11; 33:20; Is 6:5). Even more amazing is that God has invited each person to have that kind of access to Himself (Eph 2:18).  Each of us can also have a face-to-face encounter with the Lord, particularly in Eucharistic Adoration. In addition, at each Mass, we can gaze on the consecrated host, the Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity.

God speaks to us in the Sacred Scriptures. St. Jerome stated: “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133). A great way to converse with the Lord and hear what He is saying is to daily read the Word of God. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Jesus Himself, through the priest, forgives and absolves our sins.

Jesus is present to us in our Christian brothers and sisters. “Where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in their midst” (Mt 18:20). Jesus is Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23; 28:20). He has given us numerous ways to see and hear Him. Go to Mass as often as possible, even daily. Read the Word of God daily and receive the Sacraments frequently. “Gaze on the loveliness of the Lord” (Ps 27:4).

Prayer: Father, You do not hold Yourself aloof from us. May I turn ten times the more to seek You, beginning today (Bar 4:28).

Promise: "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He put our transgressions from us." —Ps 103:12

Praise: Victoria has spent many blessed hours in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

FIGHT FORFEIT - One Bread, One Body, 07/26/2021

FIGHT FORFEIT
"It does not sound like cries of victory, nor does it sound like cries of defeat; the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry." —Exodus 32:18

Moses was so angry, he smashed the tablets of the ten commandments by throwing them down at the base of the mountain. He was mad not because the chosen people were defeated in battle but defeated without battle. We too can lose because we’re too apathetic to fight. We try to skip the battle not because we’re “peace lovers” but “fun lovers.” We forget about winning because of our sinning.

When we fight against the evil one and persevere in the battle, we can’t lose because Jesus has already won the victory (Heb 10:12-13). That’s why Satan’s primary tactic against us is to get us to forfeit. Satan tells us there is no Satan. If we believe that, he tells us there is no battle. We won’t fight if we think there’s no war. But if there’s no war, then why are there so many casualties?

The truth is, Satan is a liar, robber, and murderer. We have the power to quickly crush Satan under our feet (Rm 16:20). We must obey Jesus, the Truth, and fight Satan, the father of lies (Jn 8:44). Fight; never forfeit.

Prayer: Father, use me to fight the evil one's works of abortion, pornography, denominations, racism, starvation, terrorism, and militarism.

Promise: "The reign of God is like a mustard seed which someone took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest seed of all, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes so big a shrub that the birds of the sky come and build their nests in its branches." —Mt 13:31-32

Praise: St. Joachim and St. Anne dedicated their daughter to God. They were rewarded by becoming the grandparents of the Son of God!

MULTIPLICATION TABLE
"How can I set this before a hundred men?" —2 Kings 4:43

Many times, what we have to offer seems so inadequate. We may only have a couple free hours a week. So how can we renew the Church? We may be confined to home. Our main contact with people is by phone. Under these circumstances, how can we make disciples of all nations? (Mt 28:19) We have five dollars to give, but the church needs $100,000 to shelter the homeless. What good is five dollars?

We often find ourselves in the same situation as Jesus when He found Himself with five loaves, two fish, and fifteen to twenty thousand people to feed (Jn 6:9). Perhaps we don’t need food multiplied as much as time, energy, and money multiplied. We need Jesus’ multiplication miracle daily to change our inadequacy into His sufficiency. Jesus works this miracle daily in the Mass. Because of this, the early Church called the Mass “breaking of the bread” (see Acts 2:42).  When Jesus breaks bread, our little lives are multiplied to transform the world.

Prayer: Jesus, I give You all of my little life. Multiply it.

Promise: "Make every effort to preserve the unity which has the Spirit as its origin and peace as its binding force." —Eph 4:3

Praise: "Indeed, God calls even the body to resurrection, and promises it everlasting life" (St. Justin Martyr, Second Century). Praise You, risen Jesus, for inspiring our greatest saints!

“THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT” (Mt 26:28) - One Bread, One Body, 07/24/2021

"THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT" (Mt 26:28)
"This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words of His." —Exodus 24:8

Moses came down from Mt. Sinai with the Ten Commandments and the Law. When he related to the people “all the words and ordinances of the Lord, they all answered with one voice, ‘We will do everything that the Lord has told us’ ” (Ex 24:3). After having written down the Law, Moses reconvened the people the next day. He built an altar and sacrificed holocausts (Ex 24:4-5). Half of the blood from the sacrificed animals he splashed on the altar (Ex 24:6). The other half he sprinkled “on the people, saying, ‘This is the blood of the covenant’ ” (Ex 24:8).

Imagine seeing animals sacrificed and large quantities of blood splashed on the altar. Imagine how it would feel to have blood sprinkled on you and dripping down your face, hair, and clothes. Although this seems more peculiar to us than it would to a Jew, we can still get the message. Our covenant with God is the most serious commitment possible for a human being. When we give our word that we will obey God’s Word, He takes us at our word and leads us into a new, grace-filled, and mysterious dimension of human existence. When we covenant with God, we decide to love Him even to the point of giving our lives for Him. Covenanting to obey God is serious, bloody, eternal, sacrificial, and mysterious.

Prayer: Father, I covenant with You and express it in today's Mass and Communion.

Promise: "Offer to God praise as your sacrifice and fulfill your vows to the Most High." —Ps 50:14

Praise: St. Sharbel Makhluf, from the Maronite Rite of the Catholic Church, devoted his life to a covenant with God. He was a priest, monk, and hermit, spending his life in contemplation and worship of God.

ROBBED BLIND? - One Bread, One Body, 07/23/2021

ROBBED BLIND?
"The evil one approaches him to steal away what was sown in his mind." —Matthew 13:19

How much of God’s Word have you heard over the years at home, in church and school, through reading and teaching? How much of God’s Word do you know and live? The difference in the answer to these two questions shows us how much of the Word the evil one has robbed from us. Many of us have been exposed to God’s Word for years but have little to show for it. The devil has literally robbed us blind. We don’t even report it to the authorities or call for help. We merely resign ourselves to Satan daily robbing us of the Word of life.

God’s Word tells us: “Submit to God; resist the devil and he will take flight” (Jas 4:7). We can rob the robber and retrieve all that the devil has stolen (see Lk 11:22). We do this by faith in Jesus Christ, expressed in prayer and obedience. The Holy Spirit will enable us to remember passages from God’s Word we haven’t recalled for years. We will apply the Word so as to be holy in every aspect of our lives (1 Pt 1:15).

Jesus knows how to prevent the devil’s thievery. Report any theft to Jesus, the Authority. We need Jesus to deliver us from the evil one (Mt 6:13). Jesus will not only sow the seed, but guard it.

Prayer: Jesus, I've been robbed several thousand times. Please recover the stolen goods.

Promise: "Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you." —Ex 20:12

Praise: St. Bridget of Sweden was courageous. In 1350, she bravely made a pilgrimage from Sweden to Rome. At the time, Europe was stricken by the plague and she never returned to Sweden. She was a mother of eight who had mystical apparitions from Jesus and was also a social activist.

A FAMILY MATTER - One Bread, One Body, 07/22/2021

Psalm 63:2-6, 8-9
John 20:1-2, 11-18

A FAMILY MATTER
"Jesus said to her, 'Mary!' She turned to Him and said [in Hebrew], 'Rabbouni!' (meaning 'Teacher')." —John 20:16

Mary Magdalene called the risen Christ “Teacher.” This is only the beginning of our intimate, personal relationship with Jesus, for we can call Him “Brother” (see Mt 12:50; Rm 8:29; Heb 2:11). We have the awesome privilege to be in God’s family.

We need perspective to appreciate our family privilege. A little less than two millennia before Christ, God chose the Jewish nation as His people (see Dt 7:7). Jews alone were the chosen people of God. All the rest of the world could be only “Jewish wannabes.” These people were called “those who fear the Lord,” that is, Gentiles who tried to live Judaism as best they could. Zechariah prophesied: “In those days ten men of every nationality, speaking different tongues, shall take hold, yes, take hold of every Jew by the edge of his garment and say, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you’ ” (Zec 8:23). The Gideonites even lied so that they could be lifelong slaves of Jews (Jgs 9:3ff).

Before Jesus, the greatest possibility for a Gentile was to be a Jewish wannabe or a slave to the Jews. After Jesus, not only was the privilege of being in God’s chosen people opened to all, we were even called to be in God’s family, to be on a first-name basis with Jesus, to be as close to God as is Mary Magdalene. “This means that you are strangers and aliens no longer. No, you are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God” (Eph 2:19).

Prayer: Father, I rejoice in my Trinitarian family life.

Promise: "The love of Christ impels us who have reached the conviction that since One died for all, all died." —2 Cor 5:14

Praise: "Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother, His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene" (Jn 19:25). Father, praise You for inspiring St. Mary Magdalene!

GOD IS LIKE THE RAIN - One Bread, One Body, 07/21/2021

Psalm 78:18-19, 23-28
Matthew 13:1-9

GOD IS LIKE THE RAIN
"A farmer went out sowing." —Matthew 13:4

It seems that God isn’t very efficient. He sows manna and quail like “rain” (Ex 16:4; Ps 78:27). It lands everywhere, all over the camp, all over the desert ground, available to both the humble and those who grumble (Ex 16:13). The Lord even sends real rain to nourish the ground everywhere, on the land of the just and the unjust (Mt 5:45).  He sows the Word like “the rain” (Is 55:10-11). It lands everywhere, even on the footpath and the rocks and among thorns where it seemingly can’t grow (Mt 13:4-7).

Praise God that He sends His Word everywhere — to the illiterate, marginalized, grumblers, criminals, sinners, to those who hate Him and those who hunger for His Word. “Learn a lesson from the way” God sows His Word and His grace (Mt 6:28). Have the attitude of God’s agents, His rain clouds. They drop rain everywhere they are. Likewise, sow God’s Word everywhere. Don’t worry about wasting your effort, conserving your strength, or being efficient with your evangelization. Keep it simple. Think God’s rain, think God’s reign, and just get the Word out.

Prayer: Father, who am I to decide who is unable to receive Your Word and Your blessings? May I sow bountifully so You may reap bountifully (2 Cor 9:6).

Promise: "He commanded the skies above and the doors of heaven He opened; He rained manna upon them for food and gave them heavenly bread." —Ps 78:23-24

Praise: St. Lawrence of Brindisi mastered seven languages and used this talent to read and preach the Scriptures to many.

HAND-SHAKE - One Bread, One Body, 07/20/2021

HAND-SHAKE
"Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord swept the sea with a strong east wind throughout the night and so turned it into dry land." —Exodus 14:21

After the Israelites had crossed the sea and the Lord had bogged the Egyptians’ chariot wheels in the midst of the sea, Moses again “stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea flowed back to its normal depth” (Ex 14:27). This drowned the Egyptian army.

When Moses stretched out his hand, he did miracles. However, when Jesus extended His hands (Mt 12:49), He did even greater things. Jesus extended His hands to us, His disciples, and said: “There are My mother and My brothers. Whoever does the will of My heavenly Father is brother and sister and mother to Me” (Mt 12:50). When Jesus extended His hands, He told us, who obey His Father’s will, that we are His brothers, sisters, and mothers. We are members of God’s family. We have a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus, Son of God, God Himself, second Person of the Trinity.

Stretch out your hand to the extended, nail-scarred hands of Jesus. Give Jesus a hand, even if that means having nail-scarred hands yourself. Be more than a Moses (see Mt 11:11). Be a member of God’s family.

Prayer: Father, when I receive Holy Communion, may I consecrate my hands to You.

Promise: "I will sing to the Lord, for He is gloriously triumphant." —Ex 15:1

Praise: St. Apollinaris, who was appointed Bishop of Ravenna by St. Peter, converted many by his preaching. The pagans, angered by his success, repeatedly beat him and tried to kill him. They finally succeeded in killing him after he was bishop for 26 years.

FREEDOM FIGHTERS
"Why did you bring us out of Egypt?" —Exodus 14:11

Patrick Henry said: “Give me liberty or give me death.” The Israelites said: “Give me life. Who cares about liberty?” They said: “Far better for us to be the slaves of the Egyptians than to die in the desert” (Ex 14:12). Most of us can relate better to the Israelites than to Patrick Henry. We want “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” However, life and happiness can be higher priorities than liberty. In fact, pleasure is often a higher priority than liberty. We may know we are trapped in compulsive behavior. We may admit a relationship is not God’s will, but we choose pleasure over liberty.

We will never want liberty enough to die for it until we give our lives to Jesus, Who died to free us. He is the Truth Who sets us free (Jn 8:32). If we let Him free us, we’re truly free (Jn 8:36). Jesus came to give “liberty to captives” and “release to prisoners” (Lk 4:18). He is the Redeemer, the One Who paid the price to free us from slavery.

Think of an area in your life where you truthfully don’t want freedom enough to die for it. Pray to Jesus: “Jesus, Redeemer, have mercy on me and free me.” Keep praying this prayer. When you’re tempted, keep praying to Jesus the Redeemer. He will free you.

Prayer: Father, may I be free to do godly things that most people in our society are afraid to do.

Promise: "You have a greater than Solomon here." —Mt 12:42

Praise: Jesus set Tom free from the chains of alcoholism.

FOOD AND LOVE
"He pitied them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them at great length." —Mark 6:34

The main responsibility of a shepherd is to feed his sheep. Jesus the Good Shepherd is preoccupied with feeding His sheep. He Himself went without food (Mk 6:31) to feed His sheep by teaching them at great length. The way Jesus wants us to show our love for Him is by feeding His sheep (Jn 21:17).

We need both physical and spiritual feeding, but the most important is spiritual. We are fed spiritually in two ways: Holy Communion and God’s Word. Jesus said: “My flesh is real food” (Jn 6:55) and “Not on bread alone is man to live but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God” (Mt 4:4).

This booklet, One Bread, One Body, is intended to feed the sheep in these two ways. We teach the Scripture readings for the daily Eucharist to encourage all our readers to read the Bible and to go to Mass and Holy Communion daily. We feed the sheep in this way because we love the sheep, and especially we love the Shepherd.

Prayer: Jesus, by Your Spirit, may I lose my appetite for the things of this world and desire You, the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35).

Promise: "In Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near through the blood of Christ." —Eph 2:13

Praise: "After this I heard what sounded like the loud song of a great assembly in heaven. They were singing: 'Alleluia! Salvation, glory and might belong to our God' " (Rv 19:1). Praise the risen Jesus!

WILL YOU BE GENTLE OR WICK-ED?
"The smoldering wick He will not quench." —Matthew 12:20

A man with a shriveled hand comes to the synagogue (Mt 12:10). This man is like a smoldering wick. One of his hands is almost useless. There’s still a little life left in his hand, but it’s just smoldering, barely alive.

How did the Pharisees react when they saw a smoldering wick? They reacted with wickedness by exploiting this man in hopes of accusing Jesus (see Mk 3:2). When confronted with healing and life, they wickedly plotted death (Mt 12:14).

How does Jesus react when a wick is smoldering? He responds with gentleness and compassion, bringing life, healing, and hope (Mt 12:13). The Pharisees were supposedly devoted to the prophecies of the Old Testament, but even while Jesus fulfilled these prophecies in their very midst (e.g. Is 35:6; 58:8; Ez 34:16), their determined choice to act in wickedness blinded them to the truth being revealed in front of their eyes.

Despite our wickedness, God still treats us gently (see Mt 11:29). Jesus won’t even snuff out a smoldering wick, that is, a person in whom the light of God has just about died. Though Jesus could act in justice and severity toward those who, like the Pharisees, have allowed their hope in Him to diminish almost to extinction, He instead covers them with gentleness in trying to lead them to faith.

Who are the smoldering wicks in your life? Work with Jesus to set them aflame with the light of Christ.

Prayer: Jesus, You came to light a fire for the smoldering wicks in my life. Use me to ignite the blaze in their lives (Lk 12:49).

Promise: "Many people followed Him and He cured them all." —Mt 12:15

Praise: Their daughter's First Communion re-ignited John and Sarah's faith as well as their marriage.

CELEBRATING THE NEW PASSOVER
"This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the Lord, as a perpetual institution." —Exodus 12:14

Passover is one of the most important celebrations in the history of the human race. It refers to the event when the Lord passed over the homes of the Israelites while putting to death the firstborn of the Egyptians (Ex 12:12, 29-30). In this way, the Israelites were freed from hundreds of years of slavery.

Jesus celebrated the “Last Supper” on the occasion of the Passover. He said: “I have greatly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Lk 22:15). He commanded us to do the new Passover of the Last Supper in remembrance of Him (Lk 22:19). After Pentecost, the Spirit led the early Church to devote itself to celebrating the New Passover (Acts 2:42). They called it the “breaking of the bread.” For two thousand years the New Passover has been the center of Christian life.

Are you desiring to celebrate the Passover as Jesus greatly desires to celebrate it with you? (Lk 22:15) Is Mass the center of your life? Do you live to celebrate the Eucharist? Have you followed the Spirit’s lead in devoting yourself to the breaking of the bread? (Acts 2:42) Ask for the grace to love Jesus in the Eucharist with all your heart.

Prayer: Jesus, may I desire to celebrate Mass and receive Communion daily. Do anything to increase this desire in Me.

Promise: "It is mercy I desire and not sacrifice." —Mt 12:7

Praise: Mount Carmel is in northern Israel and was a home for hermits who were especially devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. These monks became known as the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Many prominent saints were Carmelites and have promoted the Immaculate Conception.

NOTHING BUT JESUS
"I am concerned about you." —Exodus 3:16

The proof to show Moses that he was sent by God was that, after Moses brought the people out of Egypt, they would worship on Mount Horeb (Ex 3:12). A proof after the fact is not a very good proof by human standards. Moses realized this and asked for another assurance, for God to reveal His name. With this, Moses could name for the people the One Who had sent him. “God replied, ‘I Am Who Am.’ Then He added, ‘This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you’ ” (Ex 3:14). This also was less than ideal. If you go up to people and say, “I AM sent me to you,” do you think they’ll understand what you’re saying?

In effect, the Lord sent Moses to Egypt with nothing but faith. Even Moses’ miraculous staff wasn’t that much help because the Egyptian magicians could perform the same signs. The key to power in ministry is not having a few things to fall back on but having nothing to fall back on. When Jesus sent the apostles out for ministry, He set them up by giving them nothing and taking away the little they had. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking staff nor traveling bag; no bread, no money” (Lk 9:3). Jesus is still trying to leave His workers with nothing but faith in Him. Will you accept this?

Prayer: Jesus, "give me only Your love and Your grace. That's enough for me" (A Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola).

Promise: "Your souls will find rest, for My yoke is easy and My burden light." —Mt 11:29-30

THE BURNING LOVE OF GOD
"The bush, though on fire, was not consumed." —Exodus 3:2

Consider a burning candle. The flame on the candle eventually burns out when the wax is consumed. In Jesus, however, we are not like candles which burn out, but rather like the burning bush, which is neither burned out nor consumed (Ex 3:2).

Some people are afraid to receive God’s love. They fear that the fire of God’s love will consume them (Heb 12:29), and they will never be the same. Immersed in God’s love, they know they’ll have to repent and be dedicated to holiness (Ex 3:5). Yet just as Moses was drawn to the burning bush by the awesomeness of the sight, God’s love attracts people despite their fears.

God’s burning love is a Triune-love, the fire of love which perpetually arcs between the Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit. God pours this burning Triune-love, consuming but not destructive, into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5). Nothing can separate us from this love (Rm 8:38-39).

Be like Moses. Walk toward God, not away from Him. Remove not only your sandals, but any love for the things of the world (1 Jn 2:15). Don’t be afraid of the overpowering love of God. Many have been hurt by failed human love, but the love of God never fails (1 Cor 13:8). Abandon yourself to God’s love. Your entire life has been a search for His love. Be true to yourself and true to God. Live in His love (Jn 15:9).

Prayer: Triune God, change me from being a consumer into being the consumed. I yield totally to Your burning love.

Promise: "The Lord secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed." —Ps 103:6

Praise: St. Kateri Tekakwitha, a Native American, was intrigued at a young age by Jesuit missionaries. Years later she was baptized and suffered persecution for her decision. She was canonized in 2012.

MIRACLES AND SODOM
"If the miracles worked in you had taken place in Sodom, it would be standing today." —Matthew 11:23

Sodom has gone down in history as infamous for homosexual rape and related perversions (Gn 19:5). Jesus assures us that His miracles would have resulted in Sodom’s conversion (Mt 11:23). He also solemnly assures us that we who believe in Him can do greater by far than He (Jn 14:12). This means we can do miracles which would lead to the conversion of cities and countries even worse than Sodom.

So let’s stop lamenting the wickedness of the world and start accompanying God’s Word with dramatic signs and wonders done in the name of Jesus (Mk 16:17-20). It’s not that we don’t have the power but that we don’t have faith enough to use that power. Jesus assures us: “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you would be able to say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible for you” (Mt 17:20).

Jesus expects the miraculous from us. He does not fill the Bible with signs and wonders to get us to expect what no longer applies in our present day. We know that, as we approach the end of time and Jesus’ second coming, Jesus will work mighty signs and wonders in an unprecedented way. Expect miracles and work them in Jesus’ name. Sodom needs to be converted now.

Prayer: Father, use me to inspire many to holiness and purity.

Promise: "The Lord hears the poor, and His own who are in bonds He spurns not." —Ps 69:34

Praise: St. Henry was Holy Roman Emperor. His main goal was to stabilize Europe for a lasting peace. He assisted Pope Benedict VIII by suppressing disturbances in Rome.

LIVING IN REALITY
"He who will not take up his cross and come after Me is not worthy of Me." —Matthew 10:38

Jesus is a real Person. He came from heaven to earth, and lived among human beings (Jn 1:14). During the three years of His public ministry, Jesus often had no place to lay His head and no home in which to sleep (Lk 9:58). He suffered rejection and intense persecution. He suffered physically and emotionally (Lk 19:41; Jn 19:33-35). Finally, He was unjustly condemned to death. For our salvation, He carried a real cross, was nailed upon it, and died for our sins.

Jesus cuts through the confusion and falsehoods in our culture by calling us to follow Him and carry our own daily crosses (Lk 9:23). If we actually do this, we will be so preoccupied with the demands of carrying this cross, following in His footsteps, and dying to ourselves that confusion will likely be replaced by clarity. To do this, we must “fix [our] eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1) to such an extent that we won’t have time or energy for much else. But Jesus will then count us worthy of Himself (Mt 10:38).

Tell Jesus: You “must increase, while I must decrease” (Jn 3:30).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, fill me with such a love for You that I will consider You my greatest Treasure (Mt 13:44) and give all I have to possess You.

Promise: "Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth." —Ps 124:8

Praise: An invalid for many years, Teresa ministers to her caregivers by her kind words.

LOW ENOUGH TO BE EXALTED? (see Mt 23:12)
"The Lord took me from following the flock." —Amos 7:15

Amos was a country boy, a shepherd, and a pruner of sycamore trees — a nobody chosen by God to prophesy to the nation of Israel (Am 7:14ff). Jesus likewise sent out His apostles as nobodies. He didn’t let them have the possessions and money by which many people try to command respect (see Mk 6:8-9). He didn’t even provide them with accommodations (see Mk 6:10). The apostles had about as much prestige as homeless people. Of course, without credentials, status, clout, or worldly power, they were almost certain to be rejected. So Jesus told them to be prepared to shake the dust from their feet if any place did not receive them (Mk 6:11).

Jesus is the same today as yesterday (Heb 13:8). He continues to insist on choosing “the world’s lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were something; so that mankind can do no boasting before God” (1 Cor 1:28-29). When Jesus sends us forth in weakness, His power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). Jesus promised that the lowly will inherit the earth (Mt 5:5). Will you agree to become lowly? Will you let the Lord work through you?

Prayer: Father, may I be lowly in the world's eyes and great in Your eyes.

Promise: "Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has bestowed on us in Christ every spiritual blessing in the heavens!" —Eph 1:3

Praise: "Down I went to the roots of the mountains; the bars of the nether world were closing behind me forever, but You brought my life up from the pit, O Lord, my God" (Jon 2:7). Praise Jesus, our Protector!
