HEALING THE MIND
Jesus "stood over her and addressed Himself to the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them." —Luke 4:39

Jesus heals the sick not only from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, schizophrenia, arthritis, etc., but He also heals for evangelization and ministry. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus healed Simon’s mother-in-law from a fever and for immediate service (Lk 4:39). However, many sick people, like healthy people, are not that interested in evangelization and ministry. They just want to get better and leave it at that. They are probably willing to do a few good deeds, but don’t see themselves witnessing for Jesus in public. Furthermore, they don’t want to get so involved in ministry that their lifestyle would have to change. Many Christian sick people want to live not much differently than non-Christian sick people.

This presents a problem. Jesus calls His followers to a radically different way of life (see Mt 16:25). He wants our priorities to be evangelization and ministry, since those are His priorities. Because He loves us and His people so much, Jesus wants us to get up immediately and wait on His people (Lk 4:39). He calls us to seek first His kingdom and everything else will be given to us (Mt 6:33). Healing is not only changing the condition of our bodies, but primarily changing our minds to be in accord with Jesus.

Prayer: Father, give me the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16).

Promise: "He it was who told us of your love in the Spirit." —Col 1:8

Praise: Sharon witnesses about her healing from cancer by the power of prayer to every new person she meets.

THE RIGHTEOUS WRATH OF GOD
"God has not destined us for wrath but for acquiring salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." —1 Thessalonians 5:9

God is perfectly just. Therefore, the unjust must be punished. We all have sinned and been unjust. Therefore, we all deserve God’s punishment and wrath (see Eph 2:3).

Yet we can “flee from the wrath to come” (Mt 3:7) by being baptized into Jesus’ justifying death and by living our Baptisms. Thus, we accept that Jesus on Calvary took our punishment on Himself. “Now that we have been justified by His blood, it is all the more certain that we shall be saved by Him from God’s wrath” (Rm 5:9). However, if we don’t live our Baptisms but disobey God, then Jesus’ justifying death for us will be in vain (see 1 Cor 1:17). Then we will have to take our punishment ourselves. “Whoever believes in the Son has life eternal. Whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure the wrath of God” (Jn 3:36). If we refuse to repent of our sins, our hard and impenitent hearts are “storing up retribution for that day of wrath when the just judgment of God will be revealed, when He will repay every man for what he has done” (Rm 2:5-6).

Therefore, live your Baptism, obey the Lord, repent, and go to Confession. God’s wrath is sure to come, but you can be delivered from it (see 1 Thes 1:10). Thank Jesus forever for suffering and dying in your place.

Prayer: Father, thank You for not sending Your Son into the world to condemn us but to save us (Jn 3:17). We give our lives to Him.

Promise: "He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they leave." —Lk 4:36

Praise: To cooperate with the Lord's plan to deliver their brother from addiction, Jim's family fasted and prayed.

DOING WHAT YOU HATE BECAUSE OF WHO YOU LOVE
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore, He has anointed Me. He has sent Me to bring glad tidings to the poor." —Luke 4:18

Luke writes of Jesus’ first day on the job to interest us in taking the job of working for the harvest. Jesus ministers the Word of God: preaching, teaching, and prophesying. He preaches Good News to the poor, sets captives free, gives sight to the blind, and release to prisoners (Lk 4:18).

Will you take the job? Incidentally, there’s no set salary for this job. Jesus provides for your basic needs. You must trust Him daily for your bread. Also, the working conditions leave much to be desired. Although some speak favorably of you and marvel at your appealing discourse (Lk 4:22), many reject Jesus, you, and the Gospel.

At the end of Jesus’ first day on the job they threw Him out of town and attempted to throw Him over a cliff (Lk 4:29-30). If they treat the Master like that, imagine how they’ll persecute you, the servants (Jn 15:20). Will you take the job? “The harvest is good, but laborers are scarce” (Mt 9:37), and you can see why.

We work for Jesus to work with Jesus. Why does a young girl work on cars? To be with her boyfriend. Why does a guy do house cleaning? To do it with his girlfriend. Why do we suffer and work for Jesus? To be with Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, may I do anything just to be with You.

Promise: "Then we, the living, the survivors, will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air." —1 Thes 4:17

Praise: Fr. Robert became a missionary because he wanted to minister as Jesus did.

A BIG TO-DO
"Act on this word. If all you do is listen to it, you are deceiving yourselves." —James 1:22

Some of you have been reading this booklet, One Bread, One Body, for years. You have read hundreds and thousands of Scripture passages. You are greatly blessed. The Lord is not expecting us to remember all these Bible verses or to know how to interpret them all. He does expect us to live them all by His grace.

Knowing God’s Word demands doing His Word. On Judgment Day, the Lord will not ask us what we know of His Word, but how we’ve lived it. “For it is not those who hear the law who are just in the sight of God; it is those who keep it who will be declared just” (Rm 2:13).

So, let’s not kid ourselves. Let’s take every word of the Bible to heart and to life. “Humbly welcome the word that has taken root in you, with its power to save you” (Jas 1:21). The Lord will never give us a commandment without empowering us to do it.

Jesus promised: “Anyone who hears My words and puts them into practice is like the wise man who built his house on rock” (Mt 7:24). “He is no forgetful listener, but one who carries out the law in practice. Blest will this man be in whatever he does” (Jas 1:25). Jesus also promised: “My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and act upon it” (Lk 8:21). Do the Word.

Prayer: Jesus, by obeying Your Word may I be a devoted member of Your family (Mk 3:34-35).

Promise: "Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees which I am teaching you to observe, that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you." —Dt 4:1

Praise: "Let us rejoice and be glad, and give Him glory! For this is the wedding day of the Lamb; His bride has prepared herself for the wedding" (Rv 19:7). Praise the risen Jesus!

PARABOLIC - One Bread, One Body, 08/28/2021

PARABOLIC
"To one he disbursed five thousand silver pieces, to a second two thousand, and to a third a thousand." —Matthew 25:15

Parables are often misinterpreted. It’s easy to miss the punch line by getting bogged down in details. For example, the parable about the corrupt judge and persistent widow can be misunderstood so that we think God is unwilling to show His love for us. However, the parable intends to show just the opposite. The Lord will not delay long but will give us swift justice (Lk 18:7-8).

Likewise, the parable of the talents is not about investments, interest, or even industriousness. Jesus is not telling us we can work our way into heaven. Using our talents is an expression of faith in the Lord’s power, not an exercise of our own strength, and not an attempt to save ourselves. The Christian life is not a matter of what we have accomplished but what He has accomplished on Calvary.

We will never understand Chapter 25 of Matthew’s Gospel until we focus on chapters 26, 27, and 28, which recount Jesus’ passion, death, and Resurrection. We are saved from sin and ready for Jesus’ final coming because of His grace accepted by faith. “I repeat, it is owing to His favor that salvation is yours through faith. This is not your own doing, it is God’s gift; neither is it a reward for anything you have accomplished, so let no one pride himself on it” (Eph 2:8-9).

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for saving me. All the glory belongs to You.

Promise: "Come, share your Master's joy!" —Mt 25:21, 23

Praise: St. Augustine, a sinful intellectual, opened a Bible at random to Romans 13:13-14. Pierced by God's Word, he repented, was baptized into the Catholic Faith, and spent his life defending and spreading the Faith.

A GROWTH-SPURT
"It is God's will that you grow in holiness." —1 Thessalonians 4:3

The Lord told Paul to tell the Thessalonian Christians to grow in holiness (see 1 Thes 4:3) and to please God by their conduct even more than before (1 Thes 4:1). The Lord expects and delights to see His children grow holy in every aspect of their conduct (1 Pt 1:15).

In fact, the Lord probably wants us to have a growth spurt in the last part of this year. Little children and teenagers commonly grow several inches in a short time. Likewise, we who are God’s children can grow in holiness in a greatly accelerated way. The Lord delights to see His children grow quickly to great levels of holiness.

Because we love the Lord, we want to please Him by growing holy as deeply and as quickly as possible. Let us commit ourselves today to obey the Lord in any and every way so as to grow holy. Let us live, suffer, and die for holiness. May holiness be the greatest desire of our hearts because it is the greatest desire of the Lord’s heart.

Prayer: Father, may I want holiness more than anything else.

Promise: "Keep your eyes open, for you know not the day or the hour." —Mt 25:13

Praise: St. Monica's husband was ill-tempered and unfaithful.Monica loved him and prayed daily for him. He repented and converted to faith in Jesus a year before he died.

ARE YOU READY?
"You must be prepared." —Matthew 24:44

Jesus is coming back to take us with Him (Jn 14:3). No one can know the exact day or hour of Jesus’ return (Mt 24:42). He will return at the time we least expect (Mt 24:44). Therefore, we must be always ready. We are ready for Jesus’ second and final coming when:

1)      We are faithful, farsighted servants (Mt 24:45).

2)      We are working to feed people physically and/or spiritually (Mt 24:46).

3)      Our hearts have been strengthened and made blameless and holy (1 Thes 3:13).

4)      We have accepted Jesus’ salvation (2 Pt 3:15).

5)      We are “without stain or defilement, and at peace” in God’s sight (2 Pt 3:14).

6)      We are singing and praising the Lord (see Rv 19:1ff).

7)      We are “pure and follow the Lamb [Jesus] wherever He goes” (Rv 14:4).

8)      We have washed our robes in the blood of the Lamb and survived the great period of trial (Rv 7:14).

9)      We have guarded our spirits against “indulgence and drunkenness and worldly cares” (Lk 21:34).

10) We are praying constantly (Lk 21:36; cf 1 Thes 5:17).

Are you ready for Jesus to come back now? Maranatha! “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rv 22:20)

Prayer: Jesus, come back now or as soon as possible.

Promise: "May the Lord increase you and make you overflow with love for one another and for all." —1 Thes 3:12

Praise: James attends daily Mass and goes to Confession monthly. Thereby he lives in readiness for every opportunity the Lord brings his way.

POWER-PREACHING
"We thank God constantly that in receiving His message from us you took it, not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God." —1 Thessalonians 2:13

The preaching of Paul and Silas at Thessalonica was taken “not as the word of men, but...the word of God” (1 Thes 2:13). Paul said: “Our preaching of the gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power; it was carried on in the Holy Spirit and out of complete conviction” (1 Thes 1:5). The Thessalonians’ faith in God was celebrated throughout every region since they “turned to God from idols, to serve Him Who is the living and true God and to await from heaven the Son He raised from the dead — Jesus” (1 Thes 1:9-10).

What made the preaching of Paul and Silas at Thessalonica so powerful?

  • They preached for free and worked second jobs to pay their expenses (1 Thes 2:9).
  • They preached what they practiced. Their conduct was “upright, just, and irreproachable” (1 Thes 2:10).
  • They related to those who heard their preaching as loving fathers relate to their children (1 Thes 2:11).

When we preach God’s Word in an atmosphere of self-sacrifice, holiness, and Christian community, we will see the power of the Gospel result in many life-changing conversions and a renewed Church.

Prayer: Father, may my life give power to the words You speak through me.

Promise: "If I take the wings of the dawn, if I settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there Your hand shall guide me, and Your right hand hold me fast." —Ps 139:9-10

Praise: St. Louis worked hard at being a model Christian king. He was prominent in almsgiving as well as founding hospitals for the poor.

KNOW BODY
"Do you believe just because..." —John 1:50

“When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, He remarked: ‘This man is a true Israelite. There is no guile in him’ ” (Jn 1:47). Nathanael asked Jesus, “How do You know me?” (Jn 1:48) This is a revealing response. The typical response to a total stranger would be to ask: “How do you know this information about me?” Yet Nathanael asked: “How do You know me?” The brief encounter between Nathanael and Jesus resulted in a supernatural knowledge, a binding of hearts, a joining of the divine and the human. Nathanael (Bartholomew) had an instant personal encounter with Christ and realized that Jesus knew him, loved him, and was the Son of God! (Jn 1:49)

Jesus made a comment which is also revealing. He asked if Nathanael came to believe just because He encountered Jesus personally (Jn 1:50). A life-changing personal encounter with Jesus is absolutely critical. However, Jesus went on to say that Nathanael would see much greater things than that! (Jn 1:50) He would see the glory of heaven (Jn 1:51). He would see the glory of the Church, the new Jerusalem (Rv 21:9ff). He would be chosen as an apostle (Mk 3:18), the foundation of the Body of Christ, the Church (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14; Col 1:18). Nathanael would see Jesus as not just his Lord, but as Lord of heaven and earth.

May we all encounter Jesus personally and accept Him as our Lord and Savior. Then may we all accept Him for everything that He truly is, in all His glory and splendor.

Prayer: Jesus, may I love the Church as You do (Eph 5:25).

Promise: "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him; to all who call upon Him in truth." —Ps 145:18

Praise: St. Bartholomew renounced his prejudice toward Nazoreans and accepted Jesus the Nazorean as his Lord (see Jn 1:49).

CASUISTRY
"Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you frauds! You shut the doors of the kingdom of God in men's faces, neither entering yourselves nor admitting those who are trying to enter." —Matthew 23:13

Religious people can shut the doors of God’s Kingdom in the faces of other people. Furthermore, we can demonize some who do enter God’s Kingdom (Mt 23:15). One of the main ways we do this is by an attitude of casuistry — splitting hairs, looking for loopholes, and making rationalizations.

Casuistry is a begrudging, selfish attitude in which we refuse to give God everything. For example, the religious people in Jesus’ day speculated about which oaths they could get away with (Mt 23:16-19). Today, young people ask how far they can go sexually before they commit mortal sin. Catholics call the rectory and ask if a certain Mass “counts.” Many Catholics come to church at the last minute and leave immediately after Communion. They rationalize this and many other things. These are all expressions of casuistry.

Jesus did not begrudge us anything. He did not ask if just being scourged would “count” for our redemption. He did not try to shorten His time on the cross. He held nothing back. He emptied Himself (Phil 2:7) and gave us His all. If we give anything less than everything to the Lord, we turn others away from God, and worse than that, we refuse to love Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, I surrender all.

Promise: "Our preaching of the gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power; it was carried on in the Holy Spirit." —1 Thes 1:5

Praise: St. Rose of Lima practiced severe penances and laid down her life in reparation for the sinfulness of society.

BLESSED SUBMISSION
"As the Church submits to Christ, so wives should submit to their husbands in everything." —Ephesians 5:24

This Scripture passage is among the most misunderstood in the Bible. Submission is an unpopular word in our contemporary culture. In the Bible, however, submission is highly valued. It is Jesus’ position on the cross (see Phil 2:8). Submission is the way of redemption and the power of God. It is not a position of weakness; rather, it is one of supernatural strength. Submission is not passivity; it is an active, loving obedience even in disagreement.

We must submit to the Lord, His Word, and His Church (Eph 5:21). We must be submissive to pastors, parents, husbands, governments, and leaders (Eph 5:21; cf Rm 13:7). If authorities contradict one another, we submit to the higher authority. For example, if the government contradicts the Bible, we obey the Bible and accordingly disobey the government. Most of the time, however, we submit to them, deny ourselves, take up the cross, and follow in Jesus’ footsteps (Lk 9:23).

Prayer: Father, give me the strength to accept the privilege of submission.

Promise: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." —Jos 24:15

Praise: "He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up on the last day" (Jn 6:54). Risen Jesus, how can we ever thank You enough?

HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR PASTOR TODAY?
"The scribes and the Pharisees have succeeded Moses as teachers; therefore, do everything and observe everything they tell you. But do not follow their example." —Matthew 23:2-3

At times, people belong to churches where pastors, priests, and ministers do not live holy lives. Some pastors have not even turned their lives over to Jesus. Some stifle the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19) and are even unknowingly used by Satan. What do you do under these circumstances? Do you leave the church? No, you don’t leave the body because of one part.

Your pastor needs love and respect. Give him God’s kind of love: unconditional love. Sure, you and many others may have been hurt by the pastor. You are grieved to see your pastor working for rather than against the devil. Nonetheless, love him unconditionally. God does, and He’s calling you to do the same. Love is “the way which surpasses all the others” (1 Cor 12:31). “Love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Pt 4:8). Love is as strong as death (Sg 8:6, RSV-CE). “Love casts out all fear” (1 Jn 4:18). “Love never fails” (1 Cor 13:8).

It’s still possible that after all that’s happened, you may not be able to love your pastor. Pray for that grace.

Prayer: Father, may our churches be characterized by unconditional love. May I begin a wave of unconditional love. May they know we are Christians by our love (see Jn 13:35).

Promise: "Blessed is the Lord Who has not failed to provide you today with an heir! May he become famous in Israel! He will be your comfort and the support of your old age." —Ru 4:14-15

Praise: Pope St. Pius X fought modernism by renewing the Church, especially the early reception of the Eucharist.

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR - One Bread, One Body, 08/20/2021

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR
"The second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments the whole law is based, and the prophets as well." —Matthew 22:39-40

The second commandment and part of the basis for the whole Christian life is: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mt 22:39). Only by inviting neighbors to give their lives to Christ can we truly love them. A total commitment to Jesus is the greatest need of a human person, for without Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Therefore, if we fail to share Jesus with our neighbor, we are refusing to give them the greatest necessity of life. This is surely not love, no matter how many other nice things we do for them.

After we share the Lord with our neighbors, we are called to serve them in many ways. This is the follow-up of our evangelizing. We are practicing what we preach. Nonetheless, no amount of service can ever substitute for loving people enough to tell them the truth about Jesus. Even if our neighbors reject the Gospel message and us, we must love them enough to accept their rejection. Although evangelization is not all there is to loving our neighbor, it is the essence of obeying the second commandment. For Christians there can be no love without evangelization.

Prayer: Father, give me a deep concern for the salvation of those I see every day.

Promise: " 'You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment." —Mt 22:37-38

Praise: St. Bernard's parents taught him piety by their holy example. Their holy lives likewise ministered to his brothers, sister, and friends, who also followed Bernard and became Cistercians.

THE ULTIMATE POWER OF HUMAN SACRIFICE
"Whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites shall belong to the Lord. I shall offer him up as a holocaust." —Judges 11:31

In our secular humanistic society, we are rather ignorant concerning spiritual power. Many ancient peoples were in some ways more advanced than we are in regard to spiritual realities. Jephthah knew what few people in our society realize: that there was exceptional power in taking a vow to offer a human sacrifice (see Jgs 11:30-31). When he took this vow, he defeated the Ammonites in war. Moreover, when the king of Moab sacrificed his first-born son, he was spared a certain defeat in war (2 Kgs 3:27). Abraham could understand much better than we do the rationale behind God’s command to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham’s son (see Gn 22:2). The prophet Micah indicated his awareness of the power of human sacrifice when he prophesies: “Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriad streams of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my crime, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” (Mi 6:7) Satanists and abortionists also recognize the power of human sacrifice. However, to offer human sacrifice is a grave sin, an abomination. Does this mean that we are condemned to either powerlessness or sinfulness? No, the Lord has done the impossible when He sacrificed Himself on Calvary in perfect sinlessness to expiate the sins of all people throughout all time.

Praise Jesus, God and Man, Priest and Sacrifice, Savior and Lord!

Prayer: Father, may I center my life on the Eucharist, where the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary is made present.

Promise: "The invited are many, the elect are few." —Mt 22:14

Praise: St. John Eudes evangelized France by preaching on the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

PASSING THE BUCK-THORN
"Once the trees went to anoint a king over themselves. So they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.' But the olive tree answered them, 'Must I give up my rich oil?' " —Judges 9:8-9

When those called to lead refuse God’s call, people get stuck with bad leaders. For every bad leader, three people may have refused God’s call to lead (see Jgs 9:9-13). For every buckthorn, an olive tree, fig tree, and vine may have refused to make the sacrifices necessary to answer God’s call. When our leaders come from the “bottom of the barrel,” it means that those from the top and the middle of the barrel are disobeying God by refusing His call.

How many Christians have been called to run for political office but said “No”? How many parents have turned their children over to the secular media to be parented? How many people have refused vocations to the priesthood and religious life? Why do we wonder at having such poor leadership?

Even if we have disobeyed God for years, we should repent and start leading. Jesus can give us a full day’s pay for even a few minutes of last-minute leadership (see Mt 20:9). Jesus is merciful, and we can receive His mercy, if we only repent and lead.

Prayer: Father, may I make any sacrifices necessary to take back the lead of my children, church, co-workers, or country.

Promise: "You welcomed him with goodly blessings, You placed on his head a crown of pure gold." —Ps 21:4

Praise: George followed the call to become a deacon as well as husband and father. His devotion to serving Jesus inspires his entire parish.

GIDEON AND MIDIAN
"The last shall come first." —Matthew 19:30

The Israelites were oppressed externally by the nation of Midian, and internally by their own idolatry. Joash the Abiezrite, father of Gideon, had built an altar to an idol (Jgs 6:25), as well as a sacred pole used in idol worship. God called the fearful Gideon to deliver Israel from Midianite oppression (Jgs 6:14).

When Gideon assembled a large army, God told him, “You have too many soldiers with you for Me to deliver Midian into [your] power” (Jgs 7:2). So, God told Gideon to send the fearful men home, which reduced the army to 32% of its original force. God said: “There are still too many soldiers” (Jgs 7:4). Then God devised a test to show which of those who were not afraid would be alert, ready, and prepared for battle (Jgs 7:5; cf Mt 25:1-13). After this test, less than 1% of the original soldiers remained. It was through these three-hundred lowly, obedient Israelites that God received glory when He delivered Israel through Gideon. God chooses the weak, “insignificant” (Jgs 6:15; cf 1 Cor 1:27), and lowly so that He will receive glory (see Ex 14:18). The last come first (Mt 19:30).

The victorious Gideon refused to grab the glory from the Lord. He instead told the people to subject themselves to the Lord instead of their former idols, saying: “The Lord must rule over you” (Jgs 8:23). God doesn’t need multitudes to be victorious. What He wants is Spirit-filled servants who abandon themselves to Him (Jgs 6:34) and leaders who put His will above all else (Jgs 6:25ff; Mt 19:29).

Prayer: Lord, I want to be a "champion" for You (Jgs 6:12).

Promise: "For man it is impossible; but for God all things are possible." —Mt 19:26

Praise: Sam felt called to start a Catholic radio station. He persisted, overcoming numerous obstacles, and in so doing, led many back to the Church.

SAD
"The young man went away sad, for his possessions were many." —Matthew 19:22

American foreign missionaries customarily remark that Americans are much sadder than their Third World neighbors. Our elderly observe that people aren’t as happy as they used to be. Many American cities face an unprecedented epidemic of teen suicides. Almost half our children grow up in broken homes. In many ways, we are a sad society. Like the young rich man, our possessions are many. We refuse to help the physically poor, and thus we have become spiritually poor. We have no joy, happiness, or fulfillment. We choose to walk away from Jesus rather than with Him (Mt 19:22).

Love of money is the root of these evils (1 Tm 6:10). We choose estrangement over engagement, possessions over people, lusts over love. We try to save our lives, so we lose them (Lk 9:24). We gain the whole world but lose our happiness and our souls (Lk 9:25). The young rich men and women who did not follow Jesus are now old rich men and women. The Lord, in His mercy, is giving them another chance. Jesus says: “Go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor. You will then have treasure in heaven. Afterward come back and follow Me” (Mt 19:21).

Follow Jesus. “Now is the acceptable time!” (2 Cor 6:2)

Prayer: Jesus, may I choose to be materially poor and thereby inherit the kingdom now (Mt 5:3).

Promise: "Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, He would be with the judge and save them from the power of their enemies as long as the judge lived." —Jgs 2:18

Praise: St. Stephen, King of Hungary, fought only to defend his country, and trusting in God, was always victorious. He dedicated himself to having not just his family serve the Lord, but his entire nation as well.

MARY, CAUSE OF OUR JOY
"My spirit finds joy in God my Savior." —Luke 1:47

The well-known prayer, “Litany of the Blessed Virgin,” addresses Mary as the “cause of our joy.” This title of Mary is most appropriate for today’s feast of her Assumption into heaven.

Mary’s entire being found joy in the Lord (Lk 1:46). She spread that joy to others, even Elizabeth’s unborn baby, John, who leapt “for joy” at the sound of Mary’s voice as she carried Jesus in her womb, into their home (Lk 1:44). Mary was also present in the upper room at Pentecost (see Acts 1:14ff) and surely exulted with joy as her Spouse, the Holy Spirit, filled the apostles, who then brought three thousand people into the Church.

Finally, Mary “was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 966). “She already shares in the glory of her Son’s Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of His Body” (Catechism, 974). She has been “exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son” (Catechism, 966). Her Assumption is a sign of sure hope (Lumen Gentium, 68, Vatican II) that Jesus will raise us up to rejoice with Him forever.

The Lord in His Word commands us to rejoice with Mary as she is honored today. Since Mary “is honored, all the members share [her] joy” (1 Cor 12:26). We are to “rejoice with” her (Rm 12:15). Mary would be the first to proclaim: “Rejoice in the Lord always! I say it again. Rejoice!” (Phil 4:4) Rejoice with Mary.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, some Christians respond to the joy of Your spouse, Mary, with disdain. Convert their frowns into smiles of joy today.

Promise: "God's temple in heaven opened and, in the temple, could be seen the ark of His covenant."—Rv 11:19

Praise: "Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: 'Now have salvation and power come, the reign of our God and the authority of His Anointed One' " (Rv 12:10).

WITNESS STAND
"This stone shall be our witness." —Joshua 24:27

One of the most important words in the Bible is “witness.” Joshua said to the people: “You are your own witnesses that you have chosen to serve the Lord” (Jos 24:22). Joshua even set up a large stone as a witness. We have the custom of attaching little stones to rings, putting these rings and stones on our fingers, and using them as witnesses to our marriage vows.

Isaiah prophesied that we are called to be God’s witnesses (Is 43:10). Shortly before His Ascension, Jesus commanded: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down on you; then you are to be My witnesses” (Acts 1:8). We are to be witnesses for Jesus right where we are and then even to the ends of the earth.

Are you a witness for Jesus? When was the last time you took the witness stand at home, work, school, or church? Don’t be ashamed of the Gospel (Rm 1:16). Acknowledge Jesus publicly (Mt 10:32). Don’t give Jesus the “silent treatment” but openly, boldly, freely, and courageously speak of your love for Him. Try to never let a day pass without witnessing to someone about Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, stir into flame the grace of my Confirmation so I will witness for You (2 Tm 1:6).

Promise: " 'Let the children come to Me. Do not hinder them. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these.' And He laid His hands on their heads." —Mt 19:14-15

Praise: St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe witnessed to the Poles, the Japanese, and the Germans in the course of his powerful ministry of evangelization, holiness, and absolute trust in God.

ONE FLESH, INDIVISIBLE
"A man shall leave his father and mother and cling to his wife, and the two shall become as one." —Matthew 19:5

This “is the case between man and wife” (Mt 19:10):

  • A husband loves his wife sacrificially, as Jesus loves us (Eph 5:25). He must give up his life for his wife (Eph 5:25). In imitation of Jesus, he tells his wife: “This is my body to be given for you” (see Lk 22:19). Thus, he gives up his schedule, interests, and availability for the good of his wife. He is “occupied with pleasing his wife” (1 Cor 7:33).
  • A wife recognizes her husband’s position as her head (Eph 5:23). She simply submits to his headship (that is, she orders her life under his) in imitation of Jesus in relation to His Father. In this posture of subordinating her life to his, God works through “the reverent purity of [her] way of life” not only to win over her husband (1 Pt 3:2), but even to highlight the way of submission for the whole Church (Eph 5:22-24).
  • By visibly loving each other, a husband and wife can convince the world that Jesus loves the Church (Eph 5:32-33). How many people feel that God doesn’t care about them? One married couple living under the lordship of Jesus can open the hearts of these doubting people to God’s love. Love your spouse, give up your body and your life for your spouse, and lead the world to the love of Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may married couples love each other so much that many people come to realize that Jesus loves them.

Promise: "Let no man separate what God has joined." —Mt 19:6

Praise: St. Hippolytus serves as an admirable patron of those who had left the Faith but later returned. He, himself, fell away but eventually returned to the Truth.

A PITY PARTY - One Bread, One Body, 08/12/2021

A PITY PARTY
"Moved with pity, the master let the official go and wrote off the debt." —Matthew 18:27

The Lord God is “moved with pity” when we humbly beg Him to have mercy on us (Mt 18:27). He is so moved when someone asks Him for forgiveness that He celebrates (Lk 15:23) and rejoices (Lk 15:10). Father Al Lauer, long-time author of One Bread, One Body, was fond of quoting the saying, “To err is human, to forgive is divine.” God’s nature toward pleas for forgiveness from repeat offenders is to be moved with pity, while our human nature tends toward anger and vengeance. Only by sharing in God’s divine nature (see 2 Pt 1:4) through living our Baptism can we hope to be moved with pity instead of self-righteousness when asked to forgive someone from the heart (Mt 18:35); that is, to be moved with heartfelt pity toward them.

If this isn’t enough, Jesus in today’s parable on forgiveness focuses on a repeat offender. Perhaps we might feel pity on a person who hurts us once or twice. However, only by being immersed in our baptismal graces can we ever forgive from a heart of pity someone who continually “wrongs” us (Mt 18:21). Our eternal salvation hinges on having a heart of forgiveness toward these people (Mt 18:35). We must beg Jesus to give us His forgiving, pitying, crucified heart. Jesus forgave those who kept hurting Him by praying: “Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34). Right now, repeat Jesus’ prayer of forgiveness by replacing the word “them” with the names of all those who have hurt you.

Prayer: Jesus, my heart is hurt, but Your heart was pierced for my offenses. Make my heart like Yours, especially in the area of pity.

Promise: "Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know I am with you." —Jos 3:7

Praise: St. Jane Frances de Chantal founded eighty-six convents, and was a model for her countless sisters.

CLOSED MOUTH
Jesus said, "If your brother should commit some wrong against you, go and point out his fault, but keep it between the two of you." —Matthew 18:15

Christians don’t air their grievances publicly. We don’t wash our dirty laundry for all to see. We’re not trying to hide anything but we respect people’s rights not to be talked about behind their backs and not to be confronted in public. We keep it between the two of us (Mt 18:15). Even spouses and families should not know of our complaint. Shooting off our mouths often does more harm than the original problem.

Christians have shredded one another with razor-blade tongues throughout Church history. We have played right into the hands of the devil. In so doing, we are pawns in the devil’s tactics, used to tear down God’s Kingdom. But if we let the Spirit control our tongues, we can control our whole body (Jas 3:2).

This applies not only to our physical bodies but to Christ’s Body, the Church. Tongues of gossip, backbiting, negativity, and discouragement undermine the Church and make our worship pointless (Jas 1:26). Tongues of praise, prayer, prophecy, and encouragement build up Christ’s body (1 Cor 14:3-4). The tongue is a most important member of the Body, the Church.

Prayer: Father, may I speak in tongues of prayer and praise, not in sinful tongues.

Promise: "Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were undimmed and his vigor unabated." —Dt 34:7

Praise: St. Clare, holding aloft the Eucharist in a monstrance, drove off a threatening army.
