THE PROPHECY OF A LIFESTYLE

"My prayer is that your love may more and more abound, both in
understanding and wealth of experience, so that with a clear conscience
and blameless conduct you may learn to value the things that really
matter, up to the very day of Christ." —Philippians 1:9-10

Paul prayed that the Philippians would "learn to value the things that
really matter." He wanted their relationship with Christ to shine a light
on their priorities, surpass them in importance, and cause them to
reappraise all as loss (Phil 3:7-8). Once the Philippians had forfeited
everything because of their love for Jesus and accounted all else dung,
Christ would truly be their Wealth (Phil 3:8). Therefore, they would have
learned to value the things that really matter by valuing the One Who
really matters, Jesus Christ.

Do your priorities seem insane to those "set upon the things of this
world"? (Phil 3:19) Are others surprised or even threatened by the changes
in your life? Are you worth persecuting? (see 2 Tm 3:12) Has your
relationship with Christ had a dramatic effect on your lifestyle? Does
your life make sense only to those who know Jesus personally? Are you
crucified to the world? (Gal 6:14) Do you find that the world hates you?
(Jn 15:18) Is your lifestyle in the same Spirit as that of the early
Church after Pentecost? Unless Jesus is Lord of our lifestyle, He's not
Lord of our lives.

Prayer: Father, may my lifestyle be a clear prophecy of Your presence,
love, and truth.

Promise: "He took the man, healed him, and sent him on his way." —Lk 14:4

Praise: Cathy, a secretary to a vice-president, exudes a joyful trust in
the Lord that inspires many in the company to come to her for prayer and
encouragement.

Small Beginnings, Big Dreams

Source: Christine Caine

When I was a teenager I had a big dream in my heart to reach the nations.
When I was in Bible school, I was particularly passionate to plant churches
in Greece and Albania, and minister in Europe. It has actually taken years
to see some of these dreams come to pass - and I still have so much more I
want to do for God!

People often ask me how I ended up where I am right now, and where I
started. But the truth is if people knew where I started, most of them
wouldn't want to go there. They want the fruit of the ministry, but they are
not prepared to count the cost. When I started serving in church, I started
in the youth ministry, driving young people, setting out chairs, and doing
whatever it took to make youth happen. I never really had the desire to work
in youth ministry, but that was the need of my church at the time (and I did
grow to LOVE it). But I never saw myself as preaching to the multitudes
then, I was simply there to help people. In the natural it might have looked
like a waste of time to serve in a church in Sydney, when my dream was to do
mission's work in Europe. But because I stayed faithful where I was, today I
can do more than I could have ever imagined!

Lots of us miss that point of starting to serve in the local church. We are
waiting for the one big opportunity to come and drop out of the sky. Many
people live more in Christian fantasies than in a God dream.

In the Book of Zechariah, God says to His servant that we are not to despise
the day of small beginnings. (Zechariah 4:10)

None of us start out at our final destination! We are all on a journey and
the best place to start is right where you are! Start serving in your
church, and love people. It is all about helping and loving people, and you
can do that wherever you are. Yes, you may have big dreams in your heart of
how you want to help people, but it is as you are faithful in the little
that God will see He can entrust you with more. It is also as you faithfully
serve your church that you develop relationships, strengthen your character
and build some backbone to be able to last the distance.

If you just start serving where you are God will open doors. God promotes
and finds you wherever you are.

If you have a God dream, no matter how challenging the circumstances might
be - like Joseph in the pit - you should start serving and working towards
that dream right there in the pit. God has put the dream in you and He will
see it brought to completion! Serve where you are, help where you are, love
where you are, and see how God will turn your small beginnings into big
dreams!

"HOLD YOUR GROUND" (Eph 6:13)

"Certain Pharisees came to Him. 'Go on Your way!' they said. 'Leave this
place!' " —Luke 13:31

When it comes to spiritual warfare, there is truth in the axiom: "Give him
(Satan) an inch and he'll take a mile." Because God protects His servants
when He sets them in their place, Satan can't budge us when we occupy the
position God has for us. Therefore, Satan tempts us to move, to "leave
this place" (Lk 13:31). If he can manipulate us into stepping out of God's
position for us, then Satan will soon shove us as far away from God as he
can.

Notice that Jesus was specifically tempted to "go" out of position and
"leave this place." The Pharisees told Jesus that Herod was trying to kill
Him (Lk 13:31). Jesus knew that, in His God-given position, no harm would
come to Him until His hour had come. In addition, Satan tempted Jesus to
fear death by Herod. It turned out that Jesus had nothing to fear from
Herod, for when Herod had a golden opportunity to actually kill Jesus, he
didn't kill Him or even harm Him (see Lk 23:7-12). How often is that true
with us? How much energy do we waste on fears and threats which never come
to pass? Notice Jesus' answer to the Pharisees: "I must proceed on course"
(Lk 13:33). Jesus didn't budge an inch.

Ask God if you are in the place He wants you to be. If not, follow His
directions to get into that place very soon. Then "hold your ground" (Eph
6:13). "Stand fast" (Eph 6:14). "Stand firm" (Eph 6:11). "Fear not! Stand
your ground, and you will see the victory the Lord will win for you...The
Lord Himself will fight for you; you have only to keep still" (Ex
14:13-14).

Prayer: Father, I will put on Your armor so as "to stand firm against the
tactics of the devil" (Eph 6:11).

Promise: "Hold faith up before you as your shield; it will help you
extinguish the fiery darts of the evil one." —Eph 6:16

Praise: It was in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament that Ron
experienced a deep inner spiritual healing.

FATHER-FIGURE

"Fathers, do not anger your children. Bring them up with the training and
instruction befitting the Lord." —Ephesians 6:4

Notice that fathers specifically are addressed in the passage: "And,
fathers, do not nag your children lest they lose heart" (Col 3:21).
Fathers must not nag (Col 3:21) or anger (Eph 6:4) their children. This
means that a father must make sure that his word is effective as soon as
he speaks it. When a father issues a command, he must ensure — in a firm,
respected way rather than by a nagging or domineering manner — that his
word is honored.

We fathers are to imitate God our Father. It is beneath God the Father's
dignity to nag us. The Father commands us firmly and directly, yet does so
in a way that we never forget He loves us. This is where the father must
employ hands-on "training and instruction befitting the Lord" (Eph 6:4). A
father is not to "nag" his child ten times to take out the trash (Col
3:21). If his child doesn't comply when the father requests, the father
drops what he is doing. He teaches, accompanies, or disciplines his child.
Firmly, yet lovingly, he ensures that his command is followed. Like God
our Father, without yielding our dignity and authority, we fathers train
our children to obey their parents in the Lord (Eph 6:1) and honor their
father and mother (Eph 6:2).

It's tempting as fathers to want to take a shortcut and dominate our
children. Yet if we take shortcuts, so will our children, for they do what
they see their fathers do (see Jn 5:19). A father's vocation, in imitation
of God the Father, is to be personally and lovingly involved with his
children (see Jn 5:20). When we train our children in godliness, they
"will not swerve from it" (Prv 22:6).

Prayer: Father, help me to constantly teach and never lose patience,
whether convenient or inconvenient (2 Tm 4:2).

Promise: "The Lord is faithful in all His words." —Ps 145:13

Praise: For many years, Sam and his children went to monthly Confession
together.

APOSTOLIC SUCCESS-ION

"At daybreak He called His disciples and selected twelve of them to be His
apostles." —Luke 6:13

Jesus went up the mountain, prayed all night long in communion with God,
and, as the sun rose, chose the twelve who were to be His apostles (Lk
6:12-13). By this grand and dramatic setting, Luke indicates that the
apostles were very important in God's plan. In fact, the Church is founded
on them (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14).

The early Church believed that the apostles were to have successors.
Through the bishops of the Church (cf Acts 1:20-22), the apostolic
ministry would continue as an essential part of the order of the Church
and of God's plan of salvation. Apostolic succession was an almost
universally accepted belief of the Church for 1,500 years up to the time
following the Protestant Reformation. The splintering of the Church into
thousands of denominations and the weakening of the Church through the
Enlightenment and secular humanism has certainly not confirmed the denial
by some Protestants of apostolic succession. Today we have even more
reason to believe that the apostolic ministry continues through the
bishops of the Church.

This means that bishops are important, and that it is vitally important
for us to know and submit to their teachings. The truth of apostolic
succession also indicates that the Pope, as the bishop of all bishops, is
very important. By obeying the Pope and the bishops, we will know the
truth which will set us free (Jn 8:32), be united as members of Christ's
body, and truly build the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

Prayer: Father, may it make a significant difference to me that the Church
is apostolic.

Promise: "You are strangers and aliens no longer. No, you are fellow
citizens of the saints and members of the household of God." —Eph 2:19

Praise: Even though they abandoned Jesus at His hour of need (Mk 14:50),
God raised Sts. Simon and Jude to a place of power and authority.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF SEXUAL PURITY

"No fornicator, no unclean or lustful person...has any inheritance in the
kingdom of Christ and of God." —Ephesians 5:5

God's word speaks boldly to a society wallowing in sexual sin.
* Our holiness forbids the mention of "lewd conduct or promiscuousness
or lust of any sort" (Eph 5:3).
* Not only obscene but silly or suggestive talk is out of place (Eph
5:4).
* We should replace such talk with words of thanksgiving (Eph 5:4).
* An unclean or lustful person is in effect an idolator (Eph 5:5).
* No lustful person "has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and
of God" (Eph 5:5).
* People will use "worthless arguments" to deceive us about sexual
morality (Eph 5:6).
* Sexual sins "bring God's wrath down on the disobedient" (Eph 5:6).
* We are to "have nothing to do with" sexual sins (Eph 5:7).
* We are to go to extremes to resist the temptation to look lustfully
(Mt 5:28).
* "Whoever rejects these instructions rejects, not man, but God" (1
Thes 4:8).

The Lord not only commands us to resist sexual temptations but gives us
the grace to do so. By His grace, we can be pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn
3:3).

Prayer: Father, may I be "pure and follow the Lamb wherever He goes" (Rv
14:4).

Promise: "Should not this daughter of Abraham here who has been in the
bondage of Satan for eighteen years have been released from her shackles
on the sabbath?" —Lk 13:16

Praise: John, a young man of twenty, prays continually for a "rebirth of
chastity, especially in the youth."

God Bless you and all you care for.
The editor

Oct. 26th 30th Sunday in ordinary time

Lord God, we are all living in a very unusual time.

People are confused and looking for the answers in all
the places, but You.

Take our eyes and focus them on You.

Take our hearts and have them beat in union with Yours.

Take our desires and focus them on You and Your way.

Jesus, protect us, walk with us, and set us on the path
that leads to eternal life with You and the Father and
the Spirit.

Let us realize that You have a plan, and it will work out
perfectly as You want it to. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday QUESTION BOX
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=10/26/2008

"When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the
Sadducees, they assembled in a body; and one of them,
a lawyer, in an attempt to trip Him up, asked Him..." —Matthew 22:34-35

Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment.
He answered not only by giving the greatest commandment
but also the first one, the second one, and the basis of the
whole law and of the prophets (Mt 22:38-40). When we ask
Jesus a question, we often get much more than we
bargained for. That's why we may feel afraid to ask Him
questions (Mk 9:32).

Jesus may be "too much" for us (Mk 6:3). He will give us
more than we can ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20). That
means we're not in control of everything. The Lord will be
Lord of our questions. In fact, He wants to be Lord of
everything, including our lives. At the name of Jesus, every
knee must bend (Phil 2:10).

Nonetheless, I challenge you to ask Jesus a question. Be
prepared to not be prepared and not be in control. Be
prepared to be loved and surprised, to repent and obey.

Jesus alone is the Answer. Therefore, when we ask Jesus
a question, we can expect something special. Go ahead;
dare to ask Jesus a question.

"Therefore submit to God; resist the devil and he will take
flight." —James 4:7

Satan is real. He is a fallen angel (Rv 12:7ff) bent on
seducing us, destroying us, and leading us to hell.
Although we humans are very weak and stupid compared
to Satan, we have authority over him by the power of
Jesus (see Mt 10:1). In fact, Jesus has already
irreversibly defeated Satan. "The strife is o'er, the battle
done." All that remains is to place Jesus' enemies
beneath His feet (Heb 10:13).

How could we ever lose a war we've already won? The
devil's only hope is to confuse us so much that we don't
know that he exists, that a war is going on, that he is
the enemy, and that Jesus has already won. It seems
impossible to convince anyone that they've lost after
they've already won. But the devil is a master-liar (Jn 8:44).

marriage and finances. I am ready to divorce him but, as
we have 2 small children, I am asking God for one last
miracle, that He will change his heart and convert him to
righteousness and even to catholicism.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

ST. PAUL, MISSION AND MIGRANTS

"PROCLAIMED TO ALL"

Guided by the Holy Spirit, he [St, Paul] spared no effort to
see that the Gospel ... was proclaimed to all, making no
distinction of nationality or culture.

"A SINGLE PEOPLE" IN JESUS

His [St. Paul] life and his preaching were wholly directed
to making Jesus known and loved by all, for all persons
are called to become a single people in Him.

WE HAVE THE SAME MISSION

This is the mission of the Church and of every baptized
person in our time too... a mission that with attentive
pastoral solicitude is also directed to the variegated
universe of migrants-- students far from home, immigrants,
refugees, displaced persons, evacuees-- including for
example, the victims of modern forms of slavery, and of
human trafficking.

QUESTION BOX

"When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they
assembled in a body; and one of them, a lawyer, in an attempt to trip Him
up, asked Him..." —Matthew 22:34-35

Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment. He answered not only by
giving the greatest commandment but also the first one, the second one,
and the basis of the whole law and of the prophets (Mt 22:38-40). When we
ask Jesus a question, we often get much more than we bargained for. That's
why we may feel afraid to ask Him questions (Mk 9:32).

Jesus may be "too much" for us (Mk 6:3). He will give us more than we can
ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20). That means we're not in control of
everything. The Lord will be Lord of our questions. In fact, He wants to
be Lord of everything, including our lives. At the name of Jesus, every
knee must bend (Phil 2:10).

Nonetheless, I challenge you to ask Jesus a question. Be prepared to not
be prepared and not be in control. Be prepared to be loved and surprised,
to repent and obey.

Jesus alone is the Answer. Therefore, when we ask Jesus a question, we can
expect something special. Go ahead; dare to ask Jesus a question.

Prayer: Jesus, I will trust You enough to ask and receive (Mt 7:7).

Promise: "The word of the Lord has echoed forth from you resoundingly." —1
Thes 1:8

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! You are "the Alpha and the Omega, the One
Who is and Who was and Who is to come" (Rv 1:8).

"THE TEAM'S THE THING"

"Through Him the whole body grows, and with the proper functioning of the
members joined firmly together by each supporting ligament, builds itself
up in love." —Ephesians 4:16

Examine the roster of any championship sports team and you will find a
number of athletes referred to as "team players." These athletes put their
personal goals aside for the good of the team and take on whatever role
the coach doles out to them.

We Christians belong to a much greater team, that is, the Body of Christ,
with Jesus as the Head (Eph 4:15). "God has set each member of the body in
the place He wanted it to be" (1 Cor 12:18). It is critical to play our
designated role as best we can, "doing only what the Lord assigned" us (1
Cor 3:5).

Satan, coach of the opposition, knows his best strategy is to get God's
players to focus on themselves rather than on Jesus the Head. Accordingly,
he attempts to lure God's team members to covet any position other than
what God has assigned. Women may wish to be priests; priests may desire to
raise children; intercessors may long to be music ministers; Scripture
teachers might long to have a healing ministry. However, if we yearn for a
different role than God has assigned us, we miss opportunities to serve in
our current role. Then we stop playing for the team, and begin playing for
ourselves. In a sense, we "clutter up the" team (Lk 13:7) and we pull the
team down (see Lk 13:8-9).

In our assigned position, "we have gifts that" are both specially tailored
to our unique role (Rm 12:6; see also Eph 4:7) and designed "for the
common good" (1 Cor 12:7). Therefore, "each one should lead the life the
Lord has assigned him" (1 Cor 7:17).

Prayer: Father, thank You for calling me to belong to You.

Promise: "Now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem." —Ps 122:2

Praise: Gary retired from his job so he would be able to attend daily
Mass.

THE SEVENFOLD UNITY

"Make every effort to preserve the unity." —Ephesians 4:3

From prison, Paul pleaded with his Christian brothers and sisters to "live
a life worthy" of their calling (Eph 4:1). This meant being humble, meek,
long-suffering, and lovingly forbearing (Eph 4:2). This radically
different way of life was necessary to preserve and deepen the early
Church's unity in the Spirit (Eph 4:3). One very high priority was unity
in the body, and the Spirit, and in hope, unity in the Lord, faith, and
baptism, and in the God and Father of all (Eph 4:4-6). This sevenfold
unity is still necessary for our lives to be worthy of our calling by the
Lord.

Jesus is continuing to pray that we be one as He and the Father are one
(Jn 17:21). Despite centuries of disunity among the various Christian
denominations, despite millions of divorces, despite an almost total
disregard for a practical living out of our baptismal brotherhood and
sisterhood, despite the utter divisiveness and disunity of sin, the Lord
will never change (see Mal 3:6; Heb 13:8). He wants us in unity with Him
and with each other. We must be united even if we have to die for it,
because He already has died for it (Jn 11:51-52).

Repent! Live a worthy, humble life of unity.

Prayer: Father, unite the Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox before the
year 2012.

Promise: "There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of
all, Who is over all, and works through all, and is in all." —Eph 4:5-6

Praise: St. Anthony not only gave missions himself, he founded the
Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

ALL IN THE FAMILY - One Bread, One Body, 10/23/2008

Ephesians 3:14-21, Psalm 33, Luke 12:49-53

ALL IN THE FAMILY

"I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth
takes its name; and I pray." —Ephesians 3:14-16

Today's first reading is possibly the greatest family prayer ever. It
teaches us that, when we pray for our family and others, we should first
of all pray for "gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory" (Eph
3:16). Family life is humanly impossible. We must admit this and then pray
for supernatural gifts from God.

The demands of family life are overwhelming. The only way we will survive
is by asking for and receiving inward strength "through the working of His
Spirit" (Eph 3:16). We need not only divine gifts and inward strength, but
we need God Himself to reside in our family (Eph 3:17). We bring this
about by inviting Jesus into our hearts through faith (Eph 3:17). With God
actually living in our family, love can now be the root and foundation of
our family life (Eph 3:17), for God is Love (1 Jn 4:16). Because love
covers a multitude of sins (1 Pt 4:8) and never fails (1 Cor 13:8), our
families will be holy families, built up in love (Eph 4:16).

This may seem impossible to you, but God's "power now at work in us can do
immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Eph 3:20). So start praying the
family prayer in Ephesians 3:16-17. Keep praying and obeying. Your family
will be so transformed that, when you have a family reunion in heaven
soon, not one family member will be missing.

Prayer: Father, may my family "grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the
breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience
this love" (Eph 3:18-19).

Promise: "I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze
were ignited!" —Lk 12:49

Praise: St. John, who faithfully promoted devotion to the Holy Name of
Jesus and His mother, was so powerful in his prayers that many miracles
were attributed to him.

PEOPLE, PROBLEMS, AND PREPARATION

"The Son of Man will come when you least expect Him." —Luke 12:40

The Lord has given us Christians the privileged information that He is
coming back when we least expect Him. Because of this foreknowledge, we
have a greater responsibility to be prepared, for "when much has been
given a man, much will be required of him" (Lk 12:48).

To be prepared for Christ's final coming and to avoid getting bogged down
in problems with personal relationships, we must resist three temptations.
First, we must not "abuse the housemen and servant girls" (Lk 12:45). We
must not abuse people in any way, including manipulation, gossip,
resentment, bitterness, and unforgiveness. Second, we must follow the Lord
in lighting a fire on the earth (Lk 12:49), although this may surface
division in our family (Lk 12:51ff). By God's grace, division that is
acknowledged and brought to the Lord usually gives way to family harmony.
Third, we must "try to settle" with our opponents as soon as possible (Lk
12:58). In other words, we must love and forgive our enemies immediately.

As we prepare for Jesus' final coming, let's lead people to the Lord and
not be obstacles to their salvation. Moreover, let's not allow people to
impede our preparation. Resist temptation, obey the Lord, love and
forgive, and cry out: "Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!"

Prayer: Jesus, when You come back, may You find me loving You with all my
heart and loving my neighbor as myself (Mt 22:37-39).

Promise: "In Christ and through faith in Him we can speak freely to God,
drawing near Him with confidence." —Eph 3:12

Praise: Because Anna did not water down her faith, she eventually saw her
family return to the Church.

B.C. AND A.D. - One Bread, One Body, 10/21/2008

B.C. AND A.D.

"Through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father." —Ephesians
2:18

Almost all reading this book are Gentiles. "In former times, you had no
part in Christ and were excluded from the community of Israel. You were
strangers to the covenant and its promise; you were without hope and
without God in the world" (Eph 2:12). "Once you were no people, but now
you are God's people; once there was no mercy for you, but now you have
found mercy" (1 Pt 2:10).

Before Christ, we were excluded, hopeless, godless strangers. "But now in
Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near through the
blood of Christ" (Eph 2:13). B.C. is B.L. Before Christ is before life.
Apart from Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). As St. Augustine said, every
heart is restless until it rests in Him.

How can we thank Him for loving and redeeming us? How shall we "make a
return to the Lord for all the good He has done for" us? (Ps 116:12) We
should live a life of thanksgiving for having been loved and redeemed by
Jesus. We must express our thanks by letting all people know that the One
they are seeking and groping for is Jesus (see Acts 17:27). We must fill
the world with the name of Jesus (see Acts 5:28) and do all that we do for
the sake of the gospel (1 Cor 9:23).

Prayer: Father, thank You for loving us so much that You gave us Jesus (Jn
3:16). I believe in Him and give my life to Him.

Promise: "When He arrives and knocks, you will open for Him without
delay." —Lk 12:36

Praise: It was through an encounter with the Holy Spirit that Mary came to
know the Father's love in a deeper way.

Relationship with Jesus" on audio AV 52-1 or video V-52.)

THE SWAMP - One Bread, One Body, 10/20/2008

Ephesians 2:1-10, Psalm 100, Luke 12:13-21

THE SWAMP

"We lived at the level of the flesh, following every whim and
fancy." —Ephesians 2:3

When we were dead because of our sins (Eph 2:1) and had not yet given our
lives to Jesus, "we lived at the level of the flesh." Our sins of
selfishness were our very lives (Col 3:7). We spent our lives on our human
desires and not on the will of God (1 Pt 4:2). We were "lovers of pleasure
rather than of God" (2 Tm 3:4). "But God is rich in mercy; because of His
great love for us He brought us to life with Christ when we were dead in
sin. By this favor you were saved" (Eph 2:4-5).

In Jesus, we crucified our "flesh with its passions and desires" (Gal
5:24). The Holy Spirit took us in spirit to the cross where we were
crucified to the world and the world to us (Gal 6:14). Now we no longer
live for ourselves but for Him Who for our sakes "died and was raised up"
(2 Cor 5:15). We "put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for
the desires of the flesh" (Rm 13:14). We will not waste what remains of
our earthly life on human desires (1 Pt 4:2). We will not return to the
swamp (1 Pt 4:4) of vomit and mud (2 Pt 2:22), in which those living at
the level of the flesh exist. We are free! Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, thank you for sending Jesus to save me from this polluted
world (2 Pt 2:20) and a twisted, depraved generation (Phil 2:15).

Promise: "Avoid greed in all its forms. A man may be wealthy, but his
possessions do not guarantee him life." —Lk 12:15

Praise: St. Paul, a missionary to Italians for fifty years, glorified God
by being especially devoted to Jesus in His passion.

PM eNewsletter 29th Sunday in ordinary time

My brothers and sisters in Christ. I have a question for you.
Have you shared this eNewsletter with anyone lately?
Pray on it and pass the WORD.

God Bless you and all you care for.
The editor

Oct. 19th 29th Sunday in ordinary time

Lord God, give us the strength to do Your will in all of our actions.

Father, don't let us be sheep with out a sheperd, but help
us come to realize that we are in Your care, and that You
will, and want to, guide us to all truth.

Let us learn to live in Your truth, even if it isn't the popular
way to go.

Grace us to truly let You be the Lord of all of our life.

Let us bring You into our hearts through Your Eucharist,
and let us live out our lives in homage to You. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday AND ALL THE TRAPPINGS
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=10/19/2008

"Then the Pharisees went off and began to plot how they
might trap Jesus in speech." —Matthew 22:15

The disciples of the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking
Him the question: "Is it lawful to pay tax to the emperor or
not?" (Mt 22:17) If Jesus would answer: "Pay taxes to Rome,"
He would lose His popularity with the masses of simple
people who comprised the great majority of His followers.
These simple folk were Jews who naturally opposed their
conquerors and oppressors, the Romans. The Pharisees
encouraged Jesus to disappoint His followers by reminding
Him that He didn't court anyone's favor or act out of human
respect (Mt 22:16). But Jesus did not answer: "Pay taxes
to Rome."

On the other hand, if Jesus answered: "Don't pay taxes to
Rome," He would keep His popularity with the masses but
get in trouble with Rome. Jesus' opposition to Roman
taxation would then be dutifully reported to Roman officials
by the Herodian sympathizers present for the occasion
(see Mt 22:16). But Jesus did not answer: "Don't pay your
taxes."

What did Jesus do? Did He evade the question? No.
Instead, He became the Questioner rather than the
questioned. Through His questions (Mt 22:18-20), He
may have convicted the Pharisees and their disciples of
their sinful compromise with the oppressive Roman
government. To merely hold a Roman coin was a
convicting experience for an orthodox Jew who
considered the graven image on a coin idol worship. To
simply say the name "Caesar" left a bad taste in the
mouth of a Jew. Jesus' would-be trappers may have
realized they were trapped. "Taken aback" by Jesus'
reply, "they went off and left Him" (Mt 22:22).

THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE ROSARY, AND HARD TIMES

As we come closer to the end of the world, the emergence of
the antichrist, and the mass apostasy (2 Thes 2:3), we
urgently need the Spirit to guide us to the truth of the
rosary (see Jn 16:13). The Lord is calling us to rediscover
why He gave us the rosary as a form of prayer. After
developing for centuries, the rosary was given through Mary
to Dominic when he was fighting a losing battle against the
Albigensian heresy, which denied that Jesus came in the
flesh. This is the spirit of the antichrist (1 Jn 4:2-3). Dominic
did not know how to pray as he ought, so the Spirit helped
him in his weakness by giving him the rosary (Rm 8:26).
And, as Dominic prayed the rosary, an impossible victory
was won. We likewise need to claim by prayer a victory
which seems impossible.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MISSION AND EVANGELIZATION

"PRESSING AND URGENT"
St. Paul had understood well that only in Christ can
humanity find redemption and hope. Therefore, he perceived
that the mission was pressing and urgent to "proclaim the
promise of life in Christ Jesus" (2 Tm 1;1), "our hope"
(1 Tm 1:1), so that all peoples could be co-heirs and
co-partners in the promise through the Gospel (cf. Eph 3:6).

"URGENT DUTY"
It is ... an urgent duty for everyone to proclaim Christ and
His saving message. St. Paul said, "Woe to me if I do not
preach it [the Gospel]!" (1 Cor 9:16).

RESPONSE TO LOVE
By looking at St. Paul's experience, we understand that
missionary activity is a response to the love with which
God loves us. His love redeems us and prods us to the
missio ad gentes.

AND ALL THE TRAPPINGS

"Then the Pharisees went off and began to plot how they might trap Jesus
in speech." —Matthew 22:15

The disciples of the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking Him the
question: "Is it lawful to pay tax to the emperor or not?" (Mt 22:17) If

the masses of simple people who comprised the great majority of His

may have realized they were trapped. "Taken aback" by Jesus' reply, "they
went off and left Him" (Mt 22:22).

Prayer: Father, on this World Mission Sunday, take me captive to do Your
will so that I will escape the devil's trap (2 Tm 2:26).

Promise: "Our preaching of the gospel proved not a mere matter of words
for you but one of power." —1 Thes 1:5

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus Who gained victory over all sin!

"LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY" (Lk 11:1)

"The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in
truth." —Psalm 145:18

Luke pictures Jesus teaching us to pray. Jesus taught us to pray for
workers for the harvest (Lk 10:2) and the outpouring of the Spirit (Lk
11:13; Acts 1:14). We should not only work like Martha, but listen like
Mary who sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to His words (Lk 10:39). We
can be certain that our prayers are answered (Lk 11:10-13). This should
encourage us to pray, for there is "the necessity of praying always and
not losing heart" (Lk 18:1).

On this feast of St. Luke, let's pray as never before. "First of all, I
urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered
for all men, especially for kings and those in authority" (1 Tm 2:1-2).
Prayer should be "first" in our life with the Lord.

Some demons cannot be driven out except by prayer and fasting (Mt 17:21,
NAB). The holocaust of abortion is one of the most urgent calls to prayer
in human history.

Pope John Paul II began his ministry as Pope with a call to prayer: "We
feel not only the need but even a categorical imperative for great,
intense, and growing prayer by all the Church. Only prayer can prevent all
these great succeeding tasks and difficulties from becoming a source of
crisis and make them instead the occasion and, as it were, the foundation
for ever more mature achievements" (Redemptor Hominis, 22, emphasis
added). Let's pray by Jesus' standards.

Prayer: Jesus, may I unlearn any wrong attitudes toward prayer. Teach me
to pray.

Promise: "The Lord stood by my side and gave me strength, so that through
me the preaching task might be completed and all the nations might hear
the gospel." —2 Tm 4:17

Praise: St. Luke "carefully traced the whole sequence of events" in the
life of Jesus and the growth of the Church (Lk 1:3). Praise You, Jesus,
for the life of Luke.

PEOPLE OF PRAISE

"...a people God has made His own, to praise His glory." —Ephesians 1:14

The world never mentions that people are praising God. By this silence, we
might conclude that people don't praise God. However, the reality is that
there's a non-stop symphony of praise taking place on earth. Consecrated
religious and devout lay people across the globe praise God at least twice
daily in the Liturgy of the Hours. Right now, many are praying the Divine
Praises in Benediction, Eucharistic Adoration, or private prayer. Many
others are praising God in song or with the charismatic gift of tongues.
Babies and young children are offering God praise (Mt 21:16; Ps 8:3). Best
of all, Holy Masses are offered non-stop throughout the world in praise of
the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We are "predestined to praise" the glory of God (Eph 1:12). God has made
us "His own, to praise His glory" (Eph 1:14). Our praises are a foretaste
of heaven, when we will be caught up in worship of the Triune God,
praising Him "without pause" (Rv 4:8).

Since God has made us a people of praise, let us live out our vocation of
praise. "It is fitting to praise Him" (Ps 147:1). "Chant His praises" (Ps
33:2). "Sing praise to His name" (Ps 135:3). Praise God in the morning and
in the evening (Ps 92:2-3). Praise the Lord all your life (Ps 145:2). "Let
everything that has breath praise the Lord! Alleluia" (Ps 150:6).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, pour out Your love in the hearts of all believers (Rm
5:5). May "the high praises of God be in their throats" (Ps 149:6). "Lord,
open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim Your praise" (Ps 51:17).

Promise: "Even the hairs of your head are counted! Fear nothing, then. You
are worth more than a flock of sparrows." —Lk 12:7

Praise: St. Ignatius was a bishop of Antioch for forty years before his
prayers for martyrdom were answered.

Financial crisis: A time for caution, not fear

Weekly Feature

Source: Mal Fletcher
This is undoubtedly a time for caution and reassessment; but it is not a
time for crippling fear. The cover of this week's European edition of TIME
screams 'London's Sinking', with a warning that the global economic crisis
threatens to 'overwhelm' Europe's financial capital. Meanwhile, trillions
(yes, trillions) of dollars have been wiped off the value of stocks and
shares worldwide in the past week or so.

One TV financial advisor says that we've seen two big emotions in all of
this market turmoil, greed and fear. 'We've seen the greed over the past
five years,' he adds, 'now we're seeing the fear - and the fear is much
worse.'

Caution is always healthy - it encourages wariness even in the good times
and reappraisal during the tough times. Being cautious allows us to keep a
watchful eye not only on the external environment of our lives, but on the
inner world of our own priorities and attitudes. These attitudes in turn
shape so much of the external reality we see and touch.

Fear, on the other hand, cripples us; it blinds us to opportunities that
might exist to improve our situation. Fear paralyses us, so that even if
there is light at the end of the tunnel, we're unable to press forward to
reach it.

At a time when some of us are facing major financial loss, we have every
right to be concerned and probably even perplexed as to how the situation
arose in the first place.

Yet we shouldn't let fear overtake our ability to look for a better
tomorrow, or to search for the solution to problems.

In a social sense, there are some positive sides to our collective fears. A
certain amount of fear makes us more alert in the face of trouble. New
strains of flu virus, for example, push us to find new cures.

Yet any benefits are usually short-lived and some have a dangerous flip
side. Fear of sickness can become a contributor to more sickness, for
example. And fear of financial calamity can prevent us from being generous
toward others; discovering the pure joy that comes with investing in
something beyond our own self interest.

Most of us will never see the worst-case scenarios that some commentators
are speaking of at the moment. Yet many still live against a backdrop of
persistent, unspoken fear.

Living in fear means living with constant tension; it wears us down.
Sustained fear causes our adrenal glands to secrete more than the normal
dose of certain chemicals, which exhausts our nervous and immune systems. We
get sick faster - both physically and mentally.

Persistent fear reduces our self-esteem and leaves us with a paralysing
sense of impotence and fatalism. It kills our confidence. We stop trying new
things; we stick to the predictable instead. We stop experimenting and
growing.

It seems to me that faith, of one kind or another, is the only true antidote
for fear.

Some people will get through the present difficulties because they have
great faith in themselves. Others will survive because, fundamentally, they
have faith in their fellow man; they believe the markets will eventually
right themselves.

Still others will find courage in a religious faith. At times like these,
many people turn to religion for strength and for hope.

Recently I visited a rapidly growing young church in the city of Kiev. In
what was, just over a decade ago, a staunchly communist nation, this church
has grown to a considerable size. And its people, many of them young people,
have an infectious joy about life, despite the fact that many have little in
the way of possessions and nothing in the way of stocks and shares.

Communism fell partly because it denied the spiritual aspect of human
nature. It tried to solve problems with a purely materialistic approach,
which said if you change a person's material circumstances, you change them.

Of course, pure market capitalism is often guilty of the same mistake -
albeit with a different emphasis. It values people according to their
material wealth; which means it makes them feel devalued when 'things' are
hard to come by.

But there are higher measures of value and higher sources of security than
either the state - in the case of communism - or the markets - in the case
of capitalism - can offer.

People like those I met in Kiev have found in their Christian faith an
opportunity to face up to major challenges, to ask the difficult personal
questions that will help them move forward under pressure.

Of course, many still equate adherence to a religious faith with weakness.
They hark back to Marx who said that religion is the opiate of the masses.

But look at history: Christian faith alone has led some pretty ordinary
people to change the world, often in the face of terrifying opposition.

Self-confidence is all very nice, but it's so fickle - because I'm so
fickle. It seems to me that faith calls for a very different brand of
confidence, different because it's not based on me at all.

As we try to navigate the stormy waters of financial downturns, perhaps we
need to dig for something deeper than our own self-confidence; to reach
higher than the fears we face.
