PROPHET-ABLE
"If a prophet presumes to speak in My name an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die." —Deuteronomy 18:20

If prophets prophesy something God did not tell them to say, they risk death. This makes prophets feel like being quiet. However, if prophets “do not speak out to dissuade the wicked man from his way, he [the wicked man] shall die for his guilt, but [God] will hold [them] responsible for his death” (Ez 33:8). If we are silent in the face of evil, we are held responsible for the deaths of sinners. We must be careful when we prophesy, but we shouldn’t be silent. This dilemma makes us feel like not being prophets. However, the Lord commands us to seek above all the gift of prophecy (1 Cor 14:1).
Even if we don’t have the gift of prophecy, we must obey the prophets’ messages, for without prophecy we perish (Prv 29:18). If we don’t listen to Jesus and His prophets, we “shall be ruthlessly cut off from the people” (Acts 3:23).
In summary, we must not despise prophecies (1 Thes 5:20) but be open to them. We should be open to being prophets ourselves. We must neither be silent nor careless in prophesying. As best as we can discern, we must say what the Lord tells us to say when He wants us to say it. Prophesy obediently, courageously, boldly, and carefully.

Prayer: Father, may I be enlightened, encouraged, and built up by the prophetic messages of the Pope.

Promise: "He is our God, and we are the people He shepherds, the flock He guides." —Ps 95:7

Praise: "For great is the Lord and highly to be praised; and awesome is He, beyond all gods" (1 Chr 16:25). Jesus, we worship You, fully God and fully man!

FAITH-FULL?
"Faith is confident assurance concerning what we hope for, and conviction about things we do not see." —Hebrews 11:1

Faith is an assurance. This confident assurance concerns what we hope for but can’t see. We are saved by faith in Jesus (Eph 2:8). “All depends on faith” (Rm 4:16). Without faith, it’s impossible to please God (Heb 11:6). The conquerors of the world are those who have faith that Jesus is the Son of God (1 Jn 5:5). When Jesus comes back a second and final time, He will be looking to see if there is any faith on this earth (Lk 18:8). Therefore, we definitely need faith.
Faith is a gift from God. He gives us the gift of faith by giving us Himself. We accept the Gift of God Himself by totally giving our lives to Jesus. Then we can have a deep, personal relationship with the Father through the Son and in the Spirit. In this relationship, we develop a deep faith.
If we resist the temptation to take control of our lives, if we don’t try to provide all our needs ourselves, we will see God father us and deepen our faith in Him. If we take up the daily cross (Lk 9:23), we will believe ever more deeply in the crucified Jesus. If we let it be done unto us according to God’s Word (see Lk 1:38), we will develop faith in the Holy Spirit, Who teaches us (Jn 14:26) to hear Him by hearing the Word (see Rm 10:17). The purpose of life is to have faith, grow in faith, and walk by faith in God (2 Cor 5:7).

Prayer: Father, by faith in You may I do what I've never done before.

Promise: "The wind fell off and everything grew calm. Then He said to them, 'Why are you so terrified? Why are you lacking in faith?' " —Mk 4:39-40

Praise: Nearly every day some new insight into God's plan of salvation is revealed to Marie or her Home-based Community.

SPIRITUAL SUICIDE?
"Do not, then, surrender your confidence; it will have great reward." —Hebrews 10:35

Satan is trying to get us to surrender our confidence, to draw back (Heb 10:38-39), to give up, to commit spiritual suicide. To keep the faith, we have to endure “a great contest of suffering” (Heb 10:32). This contest lasts a long time. Relief in our sufferings seems indefinitely delayed (see Heb 10:37). Any benefits from our sufferings seem to be invisible or negligible.
Under these circumstances, we naturally feel like giving up. Satan will even let us give up without appearing to give up everything. He’ll let us keep the trappings of Christianity as long as we’re lukewarm in our commitment to Jesus (see Rv 3:16). So it’s very easy to give up and not even look bad to other Christians.
How many church-goers are just going through the motions? We can look like a Christian while actually being quite unlike Christ. How many spouses are divorced in heart and spirit although not on paper? How many parents have long ago given up discipling their children? How many churches have given up on trying to evangelize?
If you’ve given up on life and on God, repent. The Lord will take you back. If you’re keeping the faith but wondering how long you’ll have to suffer, fix your eyes on Jesus, and you will rejoice in the measure you suffer for Him (1 Pt 4:13; cf Rm 8:17).

Prayer: Father, may my faith move mountains and not vice versa (see Mt 17:20).

Promise: "Take delight in the Lord, and He will grant you your heart's requests." —Ps 37:4

Praise: Volunteering at a Catholic ministry, Marcia answers the phone and prays with hurting people several times a day.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
"We should not absent ourselves from the assembly, as some do, but encourage one another; and this all the more because you see that the Day draws near." —Hebrews 10:25

This Scripture passage is used to encourage people to go to church on Sundays, but it also applies to many other gatherings. How many have made worship a Sunday-only obligation? These too are absenting themselves from the assembly for almost all of the week.
Some go to the assembly but stay to themselves. They are present in body but absent in spirit. Most Christians absent themselves from the assembly by confining prayer to church and not assembling for family prayer at home. Many Catholics look for the quickest Mass, come late, sit by the door, and leave early. Some people come to church for the wrong reasons; they may be merely cultural Christians or looking to make a deal with God. These too are absences. How many assemble in Jesus’ name and not their own?
We need to repent of our absences and be present at church, present to one another, and in God’s presence.

Prayer: Father, You are always present, always there for me. May I be like You.

Promise: "In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides." —Mk 4:24

Praise: St. Thomas used his towering intellect to synthesize Greek philosophy and Catholic theology. His influence permeates all aspects of the Faith.

MIRACLE GROW - One Bread, One Body, 01/27/2021

Mark 4:1-20

MIRACLE GROW
"But those sown on good soil are the ones who listen to the word, take it to heart, and yield at thirty- and sixty- and a hundredfold." —Mark 4:20

Jesus tells the crowds about the fruitfulness of good soil and the reasons why soil does not bear fruit. He also gives advice on how to turn unproductive soil into fruitful ground. Jesus can soften the hardest, rockiest ground, as He did with St. Paul. But we are God’s coworkers, and Jesus plans to use us to till the ground and care for it (see Gn 2:15). This includes the care of our own heart and soul.
There is a well-known gardening product called Miracle-Gro. It works. Jesus has His own miracle growth plan. It’s His Eucharistic Body and Blood. It’s frequent Mass, daily if possible. It’s His Church. It’s His Word, the Holy Scriptures. It’s daily prayer. It’s the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It’s Christian Community. All of these are spiritual Miracle-Gro. They all work to make the soil of our heart fruitful. For thirty years, I have been blessed to attend daily Mass and be involved in all of the above. I can gladly witness to the miracle growth power of the Lord’s plan to spread the Word of God.
These miracle growth items work. Are you anxious? Filled with cares and worries? Do you lack roots? Is your heart hard or rocky? God has given you miraculous help. All you need to do is seek His help and receive it. Will we love the Lord enough to humbly receive His help and bear His fruit?

Prayer: Take root in me, Living Word. Prepare my heart for Your home. Open my lips, Lord, to speak forth Your truth. Reap a harvest of faith through me.

Promise: "Their sins and their transgressions I will remember no more." —Heb 10:17

Praise: St. Angela Merici founded the Company of St. Ursula, a secular institute devoted to equipping and teaching young women to be Christian wives and mothers, teachers, and catechists.

FAMILY TREE
"For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you." —2 Timothy 1:6

How well do you know your Catholic ancestry? Do you realize Timothy and Titus were ordained bishops? (see 2 Tm 1:6) By the laying on of hands, the Apostle Paul commissioned them for evangelistic work. “As for Titus, he is my companion and fellow worker in your behalf” (2 Cor 8:23). This illustrates New Testament-era apostolic succession.
Paul also assigned a precise mission. “My purpose in leaving you in Crete was that you might accomplish what had been left undone, especially the appointment of presbyters in every town” (Ti 1:5). We see the hierarchy at work in the early Church.
Where do we twenty-first century Catholics fit into this lineage? Is it possible your diocesan bishop is a spiritual descendant of St. Timothy or St. Titus? Remember, bishops can only be ordained by bishops through the laying on of hands. This is an unbroken chain since apostolic times. Ponder the amazing possibilities of your Catholic family tree!
In today’s Gospel, Jesus at first glance appears callous toward His family (see Mk 3:32-33). Within context, a deeper truth becomes apparent. Our Lord’s intent is not insolence toward the Blessed Mother. Rather, he takes advantage of a teaching moment. “Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me” (Mk 3:35). Jesus called Paul; Paul ordained Timothy and Titus; we are adopted into the family. In obedience to your bishop, how will you serve your brothers and sisters in Christ?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, strengthen me to serve.

Promise: "The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but rather one that makes us strong, loving, and wise." ––2 Tm 1:7

Praise: "This is why I have sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful son in the Lord. He will remind you of my ways in Christ, just as I teach them in all the churches" (1 Cor 4:17).

CONVERSION CONVERSATIONS - One Bread, One Body, 01/25/2021

CONVERSION CONVERSATIONS
"Before all men you are to be His witness to what you have seen and heard." —Acts 22:15

The conversion of Paul is repeated three times at considerable length in the Acts of the Apostles (see Acts 9:1-22; Acts 22:1-21; Acts 26:1-23). This threefold repetition indicates how critical it is for people to hear about God bringing someone to conversion.
Listen to Paul’s witness: “I once thought it my duty to oppose the name of Jesus the Nazorean in every way possible...I sent many of God’s holy people to prison. When they were to be put to death I cast my vote against them...So wild was my fury against them that I pursued them even to foreign cities” (Acts 26:9-11). “But because I did not know what I was doing in my unbelief, I have been treated mercifully, and the grace of our Lord has been granted me in overflowing measure” (1 Tm 1:13-14). Paul summed up the purpose for his witness as follows: Christians “heard that ‘he who was formerly persecuting us is now preaching the faith he tried to destroy,’ and they gave glory to God on my account” (Gal 1:23-24).
Paul knew that when he told his conversion story, God would receive glory (Gal 1:24). He also knew that Satan would be defeated by the witness of his conversion testimony (Rv 12:11). Therefore, he was never “ashamed of [his] testimony to our Lord” (2 Tm 1:8).
The Lord plans to do the same with our conversion testimonies. Thus, He also says to us: “Witness to what you have seen of Me” (Acts 26:16). “You are to be My witnesses” (Acts 1:8).

Prayer: Father, may I believe so deeply in You that I never look upon any situation or person as being beyond hope.

Promise: "The God of our fathers long ago designated you to know His will, to look upon the Just One, and to hear the sound of His voice." —Acts 22:14

Praise: St. Paul, pray that we experience a new conversion and reawakening of our faith!

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT GOD'S WORD
"Jonah began...announcing, 'Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,' when the people of Nineveh believed God." —Jonah 3:4-5

At Mass this morning, the gentleman seated directly in front of me paid no attention whatsoever to the homily. He was fidgeting in his seat, looking to the right and left as the pastor told several anecdotes related to today’s readings. Halfway through the homily, the pastor quoted from memory Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:35-45. At the very instant the pastor quoted the first word of the Scripture passage, this man’s head literally whipped around ninety degrees, and he stared intently at the priest. He listened in rapt attention, riveted and motionless for the remainder of the homily. The change was striking to observe. There’s something different about the Word of God.
Our words can be helpful to others, but it’s God’s Word that has the power to reach hearts. Jonah announced God’s Word and got immediate results (Jon 3:4ff). Jesus spoke God’s “now-word” (see Ez 33:30) and got immediate results; the disciples immediately abandoned their nets and followed Him (Mk 1:17, 20).
God’s Word is living and effective. It pierces hearts (Heb 4:12). It always does the job (Is 55:10-11). It reverberates inside people’s hearts and “produces of itself” results in the lives of men and women (Mk 4:28). Revise your vocabulary. Speak God’s Word — for a change.

Prayer: Father, may people always take Your Word as it truly is, the Word of God rather than the words of men (1 Thes 2:13). May I spend my life spreading Your Word.

Promise: "Come after Me; I will make you fishers of men." —Mk 1:17

Praise: " 'Praised be the Lord,' I exclaim, and I am safe from my enemies" (2 Sm 22:4). Risen Jesus, we are secure in You!

JESUS AND FOOD - One Bread, One Body, 01/23/2021

JESUS AND FOOD
Jesus "returned to the house with them and again the crowd assembled, making it impossible for them to get any food whatever." —Mark 3:20

Jesus was and is a sign of contradiction (Lk 2:34). As the Prophet, He did and said things which were challenging, confrontational, even shocking. Although He “ruffled a few feathers,” people didn’t get too upset over these things. Yet when Jesus put Himself in such a crowded situation that it was impossible even to get food to Him, that did it. Jesus’ relatives “came to take charge of Him, saying, ‘He is out of His mind’ ” (Mk 3:21).
Throughout history, God’s people seem to think about food differently than He does. God had to show us what foods not to eat because we didn’t know any better (Lv 11:1ff). Kosher foods were only a small part of God’s revelation on food. The Lord revealed to us the necessity and privilege of fasting (see Is 58:6ff). He even sent out the first missionaries with no food (Lk 9:3).
St. Paul warned against those who “serve, not Christ our Lord, but their own bellies” (Rm 16:18). “Such as these will end in disaster!” (Phil 3:19) They are “enemies of the cross of Christ” (Phil 3:18). If Jesus is Lord of our lives, He must be Lord of our food.

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to pray, love, live, and eat.

Promise: "How much more will the blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself up unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God!" —Heb 9:14

Praise: St. Marianne Cope was known as Mother Marianne of Molakai. She took over what Fr. Damien had started and changed life for the lepers on Molakai.

DYING TO LIVE
"He named twelve as His companions whom He would send to preach the good news; they were likewise to have authority to expel demons." —Mark 3:14-15

This week we are involved in a series of celebrations of those who suffered bloody martyrdoms for Jesus. Saints Fabian, Sebastian, Agnes, and Vincent followed in Jesus’ footsteps, choosing to be killed rather than kill. Today we also recall the most disastrous judicial decision in American history, the legalizing of abortion in the United States on January 22, 1973. At this moment, the Lord challenges us to choose life (Dt 30:19-20).
However, to choose life for others we must often choose death for ourselves. Jesus chose to die so that we, once His enemies, could live and become His friends (Jn 15:14, 15; cf Rm 5:10). We must choose to die to self so others can live, to be transformed from death-dealing to self-dying.
At least half the apostles were into violence, hatred, and murder. Peter attacked Malchus with a sword (Jn 18:10). John and James wanted to burn a city of Samaritans (Lk 9:54). Bartholomew (Nathanael) was a bigot (Jn 1:46). Matthew the tax collector possibly used extortion to help him collect taxes. Simon the Zealot was a member of a violent, revolutionary group. (Today we would call them terrorists.) Nonetheless, Jesus changed these violent people. He will change us, if we’re willing to die to ourselves and repent, so that others may live.

Prayer: Father, use my life and death to save the lives of children in the womb.

Promise: "He is Mediator of a better covenant." —Heb 8:6

Praise: Lord God, we give thanks and praise for the women who choose the option of adoption rather than abortion.

ANNIVERSARY OF SHAME
"Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry now, just as He is Mediator of a better covenant, founded on better promises." —Hebrews 8:6

Tomorrow marks the 48th anniversary of the tragic Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the U.S. On this day a law was enacted that turned our nation into a cemetery, that turned the wombs of mothers into the tombs of babies.
However, we have hope. Jesus “is always able to save those who approach God through Him, since He forever lives to make intercession for them” (Heb 7:25). “The main point in what we are saying is this: we have such a High Priest, Who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven” (Heb 8:1). “Unclean spirits would catch sight of Him, fling themselves down at His feet, and shout, ‘You are the Son of God!’ ” (Mk 3:11)
Because of Jesus, eternal High Priest (Heb 7:24), Deliverer from demons, and Victor over death, hope springs eternal. Because of Jesus, the final word will not be “death” but “life” eternal, not “abortion” but “adoption” as God’s children, not “sin” but “salvation.”
“At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing” (Ps 30:6). The tomb is empty! The Lord is risen! We are God’s people of life, even abundant life (Jn 10:10). Choose life (Dt 30:19).

Prayer: Father, may I not promote abortions and the abortion mentality by my apathy and selfishness.

Promise: "Because He had cured many, all who had afflictions kept pushing toward Him to touch Him." —Mk 3:10

Praise: St. Agnes is the patron saint of purity. A basilica was constructed over her tomb in 324 AD. Pope Honorius I completely rebuilt it around 630 AD. It remains virtually unaltered today

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY
"When the Pharisees went outside, they immediately began to plot with the Herodians how they might destroy Him." —Mark 3:6

The Pharisees, Israel’s religious leaders, allied themselves with the Herodians, its political leaders, to destroy Jesus. Do we see the same thing today? Are there still Judases among Jesus’ disciples, who will sell Him for silver? Is Jesus still a threat to the religious establishment? He was delivered up to be crucified not so much by the pagan Romans as by the religious leaders. The antichrists have always been “Christian,” at least in name (1 Jn 2:18-19). Are parts of the Church body still crucifying the Head of the body, Jesus, “and holding Him up to contempt”? (Heb 6:6)

Many of us want to believe that religious leaders today are different from those of Jesus’ time. Our leaders may not be perfect but we assume they’re not out to destroy Jesus. Indeed many religious leaders are models of true, committed discipleship. Yet we still have Pharisees, Herodians, and Judases today. As in Biblical times, Jesus’ opponents today may outnumber His disciples. We should expect persecution (2 Tm 3:12). Jesus said: “I tell you all this that in Me you may find peace. You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33).

Prayer: Jesus, like You, may I expect persecution not only from unbelievers but even from my Christian brothers and sisters. May I forgive and love all my enemies.

Promise: "Rule in the midst of Your enemies." —Ps 110:2

Praise: Saint Sebastian was a Roman Christian soldier. He was martyred at the end of the Third Century during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. He is the patron saint of athletes.

ANCHOR-MAN
"Like a sure and firm anchor, that hope extends beyond the veil through which Jesus, our Forerunner, has entered on our behalf." —Hebrews 6:19-20

Picture a sailing ship several miles offshore being battered by stormy, raging seas and buffeted by high winds. The captain, prevented by the storm from getting into the safe harbor, lowers the anchor to the sea floor to prevent the wind and waves from sweeping the ship away. On the ship, conditions are stormy and dangerous. At the bottom of the sea, however, conditions are quiet. The anchor holds “sure and firm” (Heb 6:19). Though the ship is caught in a storm, it is “solidly set on” the anchor which keeps the ship from being lost (Mt 7:25).

The author of Hebrews likens our hope in Jesus to the ship’s “sure and firm anchor” (Heb 6:19). When we have hope in Jesus, even though circumstances in our life are stormy, our hope resembles an anchor that extends from the turmoil of life on earth into the perfect calm of heaven (Heb 6:19-20). Our interior life is one of peace, not chaos. We know we won’t be swept away by the turmoil of the world. Connected to the anchor of hope, we live lives of “sure and firm” faith, hope, and love.

“Seize the hope which is placed before” you (Heb 6:18). Cling to Jesus and never let go. Be “fully assured of that for which you hope” (Heb 6:11). “This hope will not leave us disappointed” (Rm 5:5).

Prayer: Jesus, encourage those who are losing hope (Sir 17:19). Send Your Spirit on me so I can lead others to hope in You.

Promise: "The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." —Mk 2:28

Praise: Jim says that the best hour of his week is the one he spends in Eucharistic Adoration.

ON TIME
"People came to Jesus with the objection, 'Why do John's disciples and those of the Pharisees fast while Yours do not?' " —Mark 2:18

The people in today’s Gospel reading thought it was time to fast, although it was time to feast. They had the right idea but the wrong time. You may be doing something appropriate to the way things were twenty years ago but inadequate for the present. For example, if you send your children to the school you attended in your own youth, you may be making a big mistake. That school had its time, but possibly its time is not now, if you want your children to be followers of Jesus.

If you talk to your children about sexual temptations as little as your parents talked to you, you will find that what worked for your parents may not work for you. Times have changed. If you pray with your children as little as your parents prayed with you, your family may suffer much more from its lack of prayer than the family you grew up in.

In our time, prayer has become more and more our only hope. “There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens” (Eccl 3:1). Are you on time or out of sync with God’s present unfolding of His plan of salvation?

Prayer: Jesus, be Lord of my time and timing.

Promise: "In the days when He was in the flesh, He offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to God, Who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence." —Heb 5:7

Praise: Fasting helps Barbara pray in power and helps those for whom she prays as well.

SLEEPY HEAD
"Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was." —1 Samuel 3:3

Will you sleep through 2021 or will you wake up and answer God’s call? Many people, even religious people, will tell you to “go back to sleep” (1 Sm 3:5, 6). Instead, you should turn to God and say: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening” (1 Sm 3:9).

2021 can be the greatest year of your life. “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor 2:9). Some of those reading this will die and go to heaven this year. Others may be just moments from hell unless they repent and turn to Jesus. Some will make the most important decisions and face the greatest challenges of their lives in 2021.

If we knew what will happen internationally in 2021, we would immediately fall on our knees in prayer. “That is why we read: ‘Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.’ Keep careful watch over your conduct. Do not act like fools, but like thoughtful men. Make the most of the present opportunity, for these are evil days. Do not continue in ignorance but try to discern the will of the Lord” (Eph 5:14-17; cf Rm 13:11; 1 Thes 5:6).

Prayer: Father, thank You for creating me to live for You in 2021.

Promise: "You must know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, Who is within — the Spirit you have received from God. You are not your own. You have been purchased, and at a price. So, glorify God in your body." —1 Cor 6:19-20

Praise: "He will give a new form to this lowly body of ours and remake it according to the pattern of His glorified body, by His power to subject everything to Himself" (Phil 3:21). Praise the risen Jesus!

JESUS OF MERCY
"People who are healthy do not need a doctor; sick people do. I have come to call the sinners, not the self-righteous." —Mark 2:17

Pope Francis has said: “The Eucharist is not a prize for the perfect, but a medicine for sinners.” “For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but One Who was tempted in every way that we are, yet never sinned. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and favor and to find help in time of need” (Heb 4:15-16).

“The law of the Lord is perfect” (Ps 19:8). We humans are far from perfect. However, God comes to us before we think of coming to Him. This is sheer mercy. God loves us first (1 Jn 4:19), and wants to reassure us: “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20).

It’s as though God spends His time thinking of new and creative ways to make sinners realize they are loved, wanted, and welcomed by Him. He sent His Son to be nailed to a cross. Jesus allows Himself to be contained in a host and chalice in the Eucharist. He lets Himself be housed in a tabernacle day and night. He has revealed His Sacred Heart and His Divine Mercy so the world can know the extremes of His mercy.

What more can He do to get our attention? He has done it all. He has paid the price amid much persecution and rejection, and He continues to wait patiently for our loving response.  Will you console His merciful heart by giving your heart to Him?

Prayer: Jesus, You gave Your life for me. I give my entire life to You.

Promise: "The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever." —Ps 19:10

Praise: When reading about those who commit serious crimes, Ben prays, "Father forgive them, they know not what they do."

70 X 7 (see Mt 18:22)
"When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralyzed man, 'My son, your sins are forgiven.' " —Mark 2:5

When Jesus saw the roof being dismantled, He spoke of the forgiveness of sins. When He saw paralysis, He thought of forgiveness. When He hung on the cross, He said: “Father, forgive them” (Lk 23:34). Jesus clearly has forgiveness on His mind.

If we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16), we also will be preoccupied with forgiveness. When we watch or read objectionable material, we will pray: “Father, forgive us.” When we feel sick, we’ll go to Confession before going to the doctor. When the phone rings, the word “forgiveness” will be on the tip of our tongues.

How many times have you said the word “forgiveness” today? Since forgiveness is the solution to our problems, we should be frequently telling the Good News that forgiveness is available to all through Jesus’ blood shed on Calvary. If we’re not speaking of forgiveness, we’re not dealing with the heart of our problems but speaking only on a superficial level.

Receive forgiveness; give forgiveness; proclaim forgiveness.

Prayer: Father, "forgive us the wrong we have done" (Mt 6:12).

Promise: "Let us strive to enter into that rest, so that no one may fall, in imitation of the example of Israel's unbelief." —Heb 4:11

Praise: Going to Confession every month for many decades, John has heard "You are forgiven..." more than 70 x 7 times.

THE APPROACHABLE FOR THE UNTOUCHABLE
"A leper approached Him with a request." —Mark 1:40

Lepers were obliged by the law to stay away from people so as not to spread leprosy. Lepers had to live in isolated places and warn anyone who unknowingly got near them that they were unclean (Lv 13:45). The leper of today’s Gospel does just the opposite; he approaches Jesus. Jesus also does the unthinkable by stretching out His hand and touching the leper (Mk 1:41).

Jesus is approachable no matter what our condition. Jesus will never reject us no matter who we are, what we’ve done, or how we look (Jn 6:37). Most people have a form of spiritual leprosy. Inside, many of us feel dirty, ugly, leprous. We would not tell anyone about this for fear of being rejected by everyone. However, we can take these shameful things to Jesus.

We can “come as we are” to Jesus so we don’t “stay as we are.” He will forgive our sins and heal our leprous condition.

Prayer: Jesus, may I go to Confession as soon as possible and be healed.

Promise: "We have become partners of Christ only if we maintain to the end that confidence with which we began." —Heb 3:14

Praise: Jesus instantly healed Rhonda of hip pain at a healing service.

THE HUMAN SPONGE
"Jesus likewise had a full share in ours." —Hebrews 2:14

Jesus had a full share in our human condition. This is a shocking reality. As St. Paul writes, Jesus, Who did not know sin, was made to be sin (2 Cor 5:21). He did not sin, but He took on our sinful condition. Jesus “was tempted in every way that we are, yet never sinned” (Heb 4:15), which teaches that He was tempted to murder, commit sexual sin, gossip, hold a grudge, curse, hate, etc.

Although Jesus never sinned, He “atoned for our faults and made satisfaction for our sins to the Father” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 615).  “He was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins” (Is 53:5). “The Lord laid upon Him the guilt of us all” (Is 53:6). Under the inexpressible weight of all our sins for all time, Jesus screamed: “ ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’, that is, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’ ” (Mt 27:46)

Jesus soaked up all the sin of the world and destroyed it by His death. Therefore, repent of all your sins and give them to Jesus. Give Him your failures, weaknesses, strengths, hopes, dreams, and desires. Accept Jesus as your Lord, Savior, and God.

Prayer: Jesus, why do You love me so much?

Promise: "So He went into their synagogues preaching the good news and expelling demons throughout the whole of Galilee." —Mk 1:39

Praise: Like many over the centuries, St. Hilary was converted to Christianity after reading the Prologue to St. John's Gospel. He helped his friend, St. Martin of Tours, establish monastic life in France.

"COMPLETE IN CHRIST" (Col 1:28)
"In subjecting all things to Him, God left nothing unsubjected. At present we do not see all things thus subject, but we do see Jesus crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death." —Hebrews 2:8-9

The more complete our relationship with Jesus, the better our lives. If we don’t believe in Jesus as God, we have missed out on life (1 Jn 5:12). If we haven’t let ourselves experience Jesus as man, we lose out on love. If we know Jesus as Healer but not Savior, we might become the healthiest people in hell. If we know Him as Lord but not Healer, we are saved but have not accepted all the benefits of salvation.

Jesus has revealed Himself in such fullness not merely for information’s sake but for practical reasons. The devil will exploit any gaps in our relationship with Jesus. We must “grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love” (Eph 3:18). Every title and characteristic of Jesus is a revelation of immeasurable, practical significance.

The Lord warned us: “My people perish for want of knowledge!” (Hos 4:6) But if we know Jesus personally and fully we will inherit the Lord’s promise: “There shall be no harm or ruin on all My holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord, as water covers the sea” (Is 11:9).

Prayer: Jesus, name above all names, beautiful Savior, glorious Lord; Emmanuel, God-is-with-us, blessed Redeemer, living Word.

Promise: "At that the unclean spirit convulsed the man violently and with a loud shriek came out of him." —Mk 1:26

Praise: St. Marguerite is called the cofoundress of the Canadian church.

THE MEANING OF "COME"
"Come after Me; I will make you fishers of men." —Mark 1:17

Jesus continues to say to each of us: “Come after Me.” If we are committed Christians, we tend to think we’ve already done that. Nevertheless, to come after Jesus can mean a new experience each day, as we enter into the mystery of God’s love.

Hundreds of millions of Christians do not realize that coming to Jesus means following the Church, her bishops, and her Pope. Some Christians try to follow Jesus without trying to know the Bible. Hundreds of millions of Christians don’t realize that to come after Jesus means to come to Holy Communion as often as possible and to center their lives on the Eucharist. Some Christians even continue a crossless Christianity or an isolated Christianity without community life.

When Jesus says: “Come after Me,” He means so much that we can spend a lifetime beginning to grasp the countless ramifications of coming to the crucified and risen God-Man.

Filled with the Holy Spirit of Christmas, on this first day of “ordinary time,” let us come after Jesus.

Prayer: Father, I will come and adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Promise: "How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the Lord." —Ps 116:12-13

Praise: When caring for her infirm husband, Lynn came to realize that when she served her husband, she served Jesus. She delights in ministering to both.

"THE PROMISE OF MY FATHER" (Lk 24:49)
"Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan." —Mark 1:9

At the Jordan River, God told Joshua: “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know I am with you” (Jos 3:7). Then Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River into the land of promise (Jos 3:14ff). Once in the promised land, the Israelites “ate their fill; when filled, they became proud of heart and forgot” God (Hos 13:6).

In the same Jordan River, Jesus, the new Joshua, was baptized. When Jesus rose out of the waters of the Jordan, God exalted Him in the sight of all by testifying that Jesus is His beloved Son (Lk 3:21-22; 1 Jn 5:9). Jesus left the Jordan and walked into the same promised land as Joshua had earlier, inviting us to a fresh start and a new baptismal fullness.

In this land of promise, Jesus tells us: “I send down upon you the promise of My Father” (Lk 24:49), life in the Holy Spirit. Jesus baptizes us into God’s family that we “might become sharers of the divine nature” (2 Pt 1:4). He lavishes the Spirit on us (Ti 3:6; Jn 3:34) to give us abundant life (Jn 10:10; Is 55:2-3).

On this last day of the Christmas season, promise the Lord that you won’t become proud and forget Him as did the Israelites. Keep your promise by letting Jesus “baptize you in the Holy Spirit” (Mk 1:8). Each day, “seek the Lord” and “listen to” Jesus (Is 55:6; Lk 9:35). Live the “radical newness” of your baptismal life (Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10).

Prayer: "God indeed is my Savior; I am confident and unafraid. My strength and my courage is the Lord" (Is 12:2).

Promise: "All you who are thirsty, come to the water!" —Is 55:1

Praise: Praise Jesus, Whose Spirit is the Promise of the Father (Acts 1:4). Praise Jesus, the Beloved Son of the Father. Alleluia!

REJOICING AND DECREASING
"He must increase, while I must decrease." —John 3:30

As we come to the last two days of the Christmas season, we are filled with joy. During Advent, we waited, listening for the Lord (Jn 3:29). In the Christmas season, we have been “overjoyed to hear His voice” (Jn 3:29). With John the Baptizer, we can say: “That is my joy, and it is complete” (Jn 3:29). John’s joy at hearing Jesus’ voice led him to make the resolution: “He [Jesus] must increase, while I must decrease” (Jn 3:30).

We should make the same resolution. After being filled with joy this Christmas season, we should decrease and resolve to devote this year and this life to increase Jesus in our world. If we decrease in wealth and power, all that matters is that Jesus increases as His Body the Church increases in holiness, numbers, and outreach. If we decrease in popularity, we rejoice as long as Jesus is praised. If we decrease in strength by spending ourselves in God’s service, we’re happy to be able to help increase Christ’s kingdom.

Eventually Jesus will increase so much that He with the Father and the Spirit will “be all in all” (1 Cor 15:28), and we will decrease and become like little children (Mk 10:15). Then we’ll be small enough to come into God’s kingdom through the narrow door (see Lk 13:24).

Prayer: Father, may I joyfully die to myself (see Lk 9:23).

Promise: "We have this confidence in God: that He hears us whenever we ask for anything according to His will." —1 Jn 5:14

Praise: David increased the daily Masses he attended and then began to spend hours weekly in adoration. He received great joy and peace in the process.
