THE END OF ANOTHER YEAR OF LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 12/31/2016

THE END OF ANOTHER YEAR OF LOVE

"Of His fullness we have all had a share - love following upon love." -John 1:16

Every day this year Jesus offered Himself to you in the Eucharist. The Word became flesh (Jn 1:14) and made Himself lovingly available in case you wanted Him. To you, who are "His own, He came" (Jn 1:11). Every day this year, Jesus, "the Word" (Jn 1:1), made His holy word available to you. His love letters to you, the Bible, were constantly present to you in case you wanted to listen to Him. Every day this year, Jesus made sure that your lungs kept breathing, your heart kept beating, your body kept functioning. Jesus was always thinking of you this year, staying faithfully with you (Mt 28:20), constantly loving you. It could have been a year of "love following upon love" (Jn 1:16) for you, if you accepted His love.

This year, 2016, has now come to "the final hour" (1 Jn 2:18). At the end of the year, Jesus, "the End" (Rv 22:13), stands waiting for you, in case you want Him.

Notwithstanding all Jesus did for us, the year 2016 is best measured by what Jesus received from us. When Jesus looks for the fruit of holiness, evangelization, and service in your life this year, will He find any? (Lk 13:6; Mt 21:34) If your life falls short, come before Jesus right now and give yourself to Him anew. As He did with the good thief (Lk 23:40-43), Jesus can do wondrous miracles in "the final hour." With Jesus, "all's well that ends well."

Prayer: Father, thank You for pouring out Your love into my heart (Rm 5:5). I love You with all my heart (Lk 10:27).

Promise: "You have the anointing that comes from the Holy One, so that all knowledge is yours." -1 Jn 2:20

Praise: Pope St. Sylvester I, holding firmly to the truth, witnessed the victory of Christ over the antichrists of the Roman Empire.

THE FAMILY FIGHTS BACK

"The Lord sets a father in honor over his children; a mother's authority He confirms over her sons. He who honors his father atones for sins." -Sirach 3:2-3

The Christian family is being assaulted with a vehemence which is unprecedented. Promiscuity, contraception, abortion, abuses, addictions, and divorces are rampant. Bitterness, resentments, and unforgiveness poison family relationships. Fewer families are surviving.

The Lord wants this Christmas season to be the time for a counter-assault by the Christian family on the culture of death. We need parents like St. Joseph, who will obey immediately and act decisively to save their children from death (see Mt 2:13-14). The Lord is calling spouses and parents to be ministers of reconciliation (see 2 Cor 5:18) and peacemakers (see Mt 5:9), who have accepted the grace of forgiving and being forgiven. Then these spouses and families can pray together daily and share the Scriptures together daily. These are first steps toward the family becoming what the Church has traditionally called a "domestic Church" (Catechism, 1655-1657). These family churches have the freedom to be obedient and submissive (see Eph 5:18-21). In this obedience, there is unity, and in these families' unity there is power to bring down the enemies of the family, the Herods of this world, and to replace our culture of death with a civilization of love and life.

This Christmas, make Joseph-like decisions for your family's salvation.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit, the true Christmas Spirit, to show me the threats to my family.

Promise: "Husbands, love your wives. Avoid any bitterness toward them. You children, obey your parents in everything as the acceptable way in the Lord." -Col 3:19-20

Praise: The Holy Family models what being of "one heart and one mind" is like (Acts 4:32).

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

"It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not experience death until he had seen the Anointed of the Lord." -Luke 2:26

Sometimes when we look at the manger scene, we don't see how we fit into Christmas. We see figures from ancient times in a distant land. Yet how do we live Christmas in the here and now?

Thank God the reality of Christmas is not limited to a particular time or place. Christmas transcends geography and chronology. It is not a matter of exterior circumstances but of the heart. Christmas is an "inside job," a movement "of the Holy Spirit, Who is within" (1 Cor 6:19). The reality of Christmas does not happen by our might or power but by the Spirit (Zec 4:6).

Without being at the manger and before seeing the Christ Child, Simeon already experienced the Christ of Christmas because "the Holy Spirit was upon him" (Lk 2:25). The Spirit guides us to all truth, including Christmas (Jn 16:13).

Let's ask the Father to stir into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit (2 Tm 1:6ff). "The way we know we remain in Him and He in us is that He has given us of His Spirit" (1 Jn 4:13). The Spirit is also the way we know the reality of Christmas. Come, Holy Spirit of Christmas.

Prayer: Father, today pour out anew on me the Holy Spirit of Christmas so I may meet the Christ of Christmas.

Promise: "The way we can be sure we are in union with Him is for the man who claims to abide in Him to conduct himself just as He did." -1 Jn 2:5-6

Praise: St. Thomas imitated Jesus by forgiving his murderers.

ROYAL FLUSH

Herod "ordered the massacre of all the boys two years old and under in Bethlehem." -Matthew 2:16

Herod understood part of the meaning of Christmas. He understood that Jesus' life and birth were an immediate and a long-term threat to his kingship. Herod understood and believed what Mary prophesied in relation to Jesus' birth. In her "Magnificat," she proclaimed: The Lord "has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away" (Lk 1:52-53). In addition, Herod anticipated another prophecy relating to Jesus. Even before Simeon got the words out, Herod knew Jesus was a "Sign of contradiction" (Lk 2:34, our transl.).

Do you understand the meaning of Christmas as well or better than Herod did? Do you understand that Christ and Christmas are a revolutionary threat against worldly economic and political powers? Do you understand how people living the true meaning of Christmas could put Planned Parenthood out of business? Thus, the atrocities of Herod and Planned Parenthood should come as no surprise. Life, Christ, Christmas, and love are formidable, ultimately invincible threats to a "culture of death." May our Christmas be so Christ-like as to warrant persecution.

Prayer: Father, this Christmas season save babies in the womb by saving their parents from sin.

Promise: "Here, then, is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: that God is Light; in Him there is no darkness." -1 Jn 1:5

Praise: The Holy Innocents now number hundreds of millions. They pray for us to repent.

THE LOVE BEYOND ALL TELLING

"This fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ." -1 John 1:3

The birth of Jesus made it possible for people to see, hear, touch, and hold Jesus (see 1 Jn 1:1ff). It made it possible to have a personal relationship with Him.

Jesus' Ascension, the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and the birth of the Church made it possible for all people to have a much more personal, deep, and intimate relationship with Jesus (see Catechism, 788). Astoundingly, we can even live inside Jesus while He lives inside us (see Jn 14:20; 17:23). We can even receive into our bodies the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus. This double indwelling is a relationship beyond all human experience of intimacy. It is a miracle and a mystery of abiding in the One Who is Love Himself (1 Jn 4:16). We are "able to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love which surpasses all knowledge, so that (we) may attain to the fullness of God Himself" (Eph 3:18-19). Our entry into and abiding in the mystery of divine love is done by the Holy Spirit, especially working through the Church, in Baptism and the Eucharist.

Christmas is prime time for receiving divine love, for Christmas takes us back to the roots of God's incarnate love. Have a Christmas in the mystery of holy love.

Prayer: Father, give me love beyond all telling.

Promise: "He saw and believed." -Jn 20:8

Praise: St. John proclaimed with St. Peter, both defending their faith in Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit: "Surely we cannot help speaking of what we have heard and seen" (Acts 4:20).

(For related teaching, order our leaflet, "Your Christmas Present: The Psalms".)

RUNNING FROM LOVE? - One Bread, One Body, 12/26/2016

Monday, December 26, 2016, St. Stephen

Acts 6:8-10; 7:54-59, Psalm 31:3-4, 6, 8, 16-17, Matthew

RUNNING FROM LOVE?

"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." -Acts 7:59

On this second day of Christmas, we have ample proof that Christmas has become too commercialized. Many of us have received all kinds of stuff as presents. We may also feel stuffed from over-indulging in food, drink, TV, shopping, working, etc. We may be smothered in debt. Why do so many feel compelled to go so far overboard at Christmas?

There are many answers to this question, but one answer may be that we absorb ourselves with material things at Christmas because we're afraid of finding the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas means God has become man and was born so that we could have a deep, personal relationship with Him. A deep love for the Crucified One results in being persecuted with and for Him. The result of Christmas is to live and die like St. Stephen - martyred or at least suffering redemptively for the Christ of Christmas. Naturally, we shy away and run from true love, love that hurts so much it becomes a sharing in Calvary.

Let us put aside our distractions and allow ourselves to fearfully fall into the hands of the living God, Who is Love Himself (Heb 10:31).

Prayer: Father, I decide to take down the wall of possessions and activities which I have put between me and Your love.

Promise: "You will be hated by all on account of Me. But whoever holds out till the end will escape death." -Mt 10:22

Praise: St. Stephen rejoiced in death which would bring him closer to his Beloved. He was so "filled with faith and the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6:5) that he was martyred even before the apostles.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday CONSTRICTED BY LOVE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=12/25/2016

"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." -John 1:14

On this great celebration of Christmas, we recall Jesus being constricted for love of us:

-Jesus, Son of God and Eternal Word of God, Whom the universe cannot contain (2 Chr 6:18), is
constricted in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

-Jesus, through Whom all things came into being (Jn 1:3), accepts the constraints and
limitations of a human body.

-After birth, Jesus was "wrapped in swaddling clothes" (Lk 2:12). These clothes encircled His
body, constricting Him.

-The Baby Jesus was hunted down by the government. His family fled to Egypt. He was constricted
through life as a Refugee in a land far from His home (Mt 2:14ff).

-Jesus was constricted on the cross, the Almighty God pressed to its wood by a few nails.

-Jesus was constricted again by swaddling clothes. His burial cloths were wrapped around His
immobile body.

-After dying, the body of Jesus was constricted in a tomb.

Why did Jesus submit to these constrictions for our sake? "God is Love" (1 Jn 4:16), and love
endures all things (1 Cor 13:7).

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for taking on the constrictions of our humanity so You could set us
free in the power of Your resurrection! I join my human life to Yours. I put my life in Your hands.

Promise: "Any who did accept [Jesus] He empowered to become children of God." -Jn 1:12

Praise: "For a Child is born to us, a Son is given us; upon His shoulder dominion rests" (Is 9:5).
"With the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption" (Ps 130:7).

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

WELCOME CHILDREN, MIGRANTS

"PEOPLE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THINGS"

The Church ... invites us to do this precisely amidst this phenomenon, with the certainty
that no one is a stranger in the Christian community, which embraces "every nation, tribe,
people and tongue" (Rev 7:9). Each person is precious; persons are more important than
things, and the worth of an institution is measured by the way it treats the life and
dignity of human beings, particularly when they are vulnerable, as in the case of child
migrants.

DON'T TIRE OF LIVING THE GOSPEL

... I wish to address a word to you, who walk alongside migrant children and young people:
they need your precious help. The Church too needs you and supports you in the generous
service you offer. Do not tire of courageously living the Gospel, which calls you to
recognize and welcome the Lord Jesus among the smallest and the most vulnerable.

"INSPIRES AND CHALLENGES"

"Whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives
not Me but Him who sent Me" (Mk 9:37; cf. Mt 18:5; Lk 9:48; Jn 13:20). With these words,
the Evangelists remind the Christian community of Jesus' teaching which both inspires and
challenges.

CONSTRICTED BY LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 12/25/2016

We at Presentation Ministries wish you a very holy and blessed Christmas. We pray you will receive Jesus, the Word Incarnate, in a new way into your heart.

Sunday, December 25, 2016, Christmas

CONSTRICTED BY LOVE

"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." -John 1:14

On this great celebration of Christmas, we recall Jesus being constricted for love of us:
* Jesus, Son of God and Eternal Word of God, Whom the universe cannot contain (2 Chr 6:18), is constricted in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
* Jesus, through Whom all things came into being (Jn 1:3), accepts the constraints and limitations of a human body.
* After birth, Jesus was "wrapped in swaddling clothes" (Lk 2:12). These clothes encircled His body, constricting Him.
* The Baby Jesus was hunted down by the government. His family fled to Egypt. He was constricted through life as a Refugee in a land far from His home (Mt 2:14ff).
* Jesus was constricted on the cross, the Almighty God pressed to its wood by a few nails.
* Jesus was constricted again by swaddling clothes. His burial cloths were wrapped around His immobile body.
* After dying, the body of Jesus was constricted in a tomb.

Why did Jesus submit to these constrictions for our sake? "God is Love" (1 Jn 4:16), and love endures all things (1 Cor 13:7).

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for taking on the constrictions of our humanity so You could set us free in the power of Your resurrection!

"FREE AT LAST" - One Bread, One Body, 12/24/2016

We at Presentation Ministries wish you a very holy and blessed Christmas. We pray you will receive Jesus, the Word Incarnate, in a new way into your heart.

"FREE AT LAST"

"You shall go before the Lord to prepare straight paths for Him, giving His people a knowledge of salvation in freedom from their sins." -Luke 1:76-77

On this Christmas Eve day and last day of Advent, we sing, for the last time until next Advent, "O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel." We are mourning in lonely exile. We cry out and sing out for God to visit and ransom His people this Christmas season (Lk 1:68). We must be "rid of fear and delivered from the enemy" (Lk 1:74). We need Emmanuel, the Messiah, Jesus.

Only Jesus, the Truth, can set us free (see Jn 8:36; 14:6; 8:32). He began His public ministry by proclaiming: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore He has anointed Me. He has sent Me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind and release to prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord" (Lk 4:18-19). Jesus announced a perpetual Jubilee Year of liberation (see Lv 25:8ff).

Receive from Jesus the ultimate Christmas present - freedom to "serve Him devoutly and through all our days be holy in His sight" (Lk 1:75). This Christmas, proclaim as Martin Luther King preached: "Free at last, Lord God Almighty, free at last!"

Prayer: "O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appears."

Promise: "Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before Me; your throne shall stand firm forever." -2 Sm 7:16

Praise: "Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel because He has visited and ransomed His people" (Lk 1:68).

JESUS CHRIST IS COMING TO TOWN

"Who can stand when He appears?" -Malachi 3:2

Jesus is coming! He is coming in a new way into our lives and our world this Christmas. "Yes, He is coming" (Mal 3:1). His first coming was humble and generally unrecognized by most of the world.

The secular culture is working hard to ensure that Jesus' coming this Christmas will also be unrecognized. The culture has replaced Jesus' Christmas coming with the "holiday" coming of Santa Claus.

This Christmas, will you be among the humble shepherds who recognized Jesus' Christmas coming, or the innkeepers whose lives were too full to make room for Jesus? (Lk 2:7) Is your life too full or too busy to make room for Jesus?

Repent of anything that keeps you away from Jesus. Let Him purify and refine you of anything that causes you to have no room for Him (Mal 3:2-3). It's nice to give presents, but it's eternally critical to give Jesus your presence. May you be fully attentive to Him at His Christmas coming, so that Jesus will not have to say on Christmas: "Why was no one there when I came?" (Is 50:2)

Prayer: Jesus, I offer You the Christmas present You desire most: my life.

Promise: "The friendship of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and His covenant, for their instruction." -Ps 25:14

Praise: "O Emmanuel, King and Lawgiver, Desire of the nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord our God."

JOIN THE REVOLUTION - One Bread, One Body, 12/22/2016

Thursday, December 22, 2016

1 Samuel 1:24-28, 1 Samuel 2:1, 4-8, Luke 1:46-56
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/122216.cfm

JOIN THE REVOLUTION

"He has shown might with His arm; He has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts." -Luke 1:51

Hannah lived during a time when the people of God were weak in faith, when "a revelation of the Lord was uncommon and vision infrequent" (1 Sm 3:1). She prophesied a spiritual, economic, and social revolution in which "the bows of the mighty are broken, while the tottering gird on strength. The well-fed hire themselves out for bread, while the hungry batten on spoil" (1 Sm 2:4-5). Hannah's prophecy was fulfilled in thirty years when "the whole Israelite population turned to the Lord" (1 Sm 7:2).

Mary lived during a time when the people of God were oppressed by the Roman government. She also prophesied a spiritual, economic, and social revolution in which the Lord "has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away" (Lk 1:52-53). Mary's prophecy was more than fulfilled in the death and resurrection of her Son, Jesus.

Pope St. John Paul II lived during a time when many of God's people were weak in faith and oppressed by a culture of death. He prophesied that the Lord would give us a Great Jubilee which would mark a spiritual, economic, and social revolution. His prophecy will be fulfilled if we are "docile to the action of the Holy Spirit" (Toward the Third Millennium, 18). Did that happen in your life and in the world back in the year 2000? If not, make it happen now. Receive the Holy Spirit, the only true Christmas Spirit. Join the revolution.

Prayer: Father, use my life and death to displace the culture of death with a civilization of love and life.

Promise: "My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior." -Lk 1:46-47

Praise: "O King of all nations, the only Joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature You fashioned from the dust."

HIDE AND SEE

"Let Me see you." -Song of Songs 2:14

We're hiding from Jesus. He's trying to look at us, but we're hiding from Him - whether it's behind a boulder (Sg 2:14), a sinful, worldly lifestyle, or a veil of fear. It's estimated that almost half of registered Catholics hide from Jesus simply by not showing up at Mass on Sunday.

We may be hiding from Jesus, but that doesn't stop Him from looking for us (Lk 19:10). He loves us so much that He came down from heaven to earth to look at us. We might look in a mirror and dislike what we see, but Jesus loves to look at us. He says to each of us: "Ah, you are beautiful, My beloved" (Sg 1:15).

During the Advent and Christmas seasons, visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Sit and gaze upon the eucharistic Jesus. Now realize that He is also looking upon you. While in His eucharistic presence, read the entire book of Song of Songs. Picture Jesus, our Groom, using the words of the groom to talk directly to you with His words of ardent love (denoted by the letter 'G' in the left margin of some Bibles). Respond to Him by lovingly speaking to Him the words of the bride (denoted by the letter 'B' in the left margin of some Bibles).

Hide from Jesus no longer. Give Jesus the Christmas present He wants. Let Him see your face (Sg 2:14) and tell you how much He loves you. Then love Him in return.

Prayer: Jesus, why am I afraid of Your love? (Ps 139:7-12) Why do I hide myself from You? Give me the grace to let You love me.

Promise: "The Lord has removed the judgment against you...you have no further misfortune to fear." -Zep 3:15

Praise: "O Radiant Dawn, Splendor of eternal light, Sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death."

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

"O COME, O COME IMMANUEL?"

"The virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Immanuel." -Isaiah 7:14

One of the greatest prophecies in the history of the human race is Isaiah's prophecy of "Immanuel." This does not merely mean that God is present but that God is incarnate (see Mt 1:23). "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us" (Jn 1:14). God became a man. Immanuel is Jesus, Who is God incarnate, crucified, risen, glorified, and eucharistic. Immanuel is Jesus, a Sign as "deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!" (Is 7:11) Immanuel is Jesus, the Sign of contradiction for the downfall and rise of many (Lk 2:34, our transl).

Will you accept Immanuel? When Mary accepted Immanuel, her life dramatically changed. She put herself in danger of being divorced by Joseph (Mt 1:19) and of even being strangled or stoned to death as an adulteress. After Mary accepted Immanuel, she gave birth in a barn (Lk 2:7), had to suddenly flee to Egypt in the night (Mt 2:14), and eventually stood at the foot of the cross of her Son (Jn 19:25). Will you accept Immanuel and totally give your life to Him? "To His own He came, yet His own did not accept Him. Any who did accept Him He empowered to become children of God" (Jn 1:11-12).

Prayer: Father, I am Your slave. Let it be done to me according to Your word (Lk 1:38).

Promise: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you." -Lk 1:35

Praise: "O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at Your will the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead Your captive people into freedom."

SALVATION IS INCARNATE - One Bread, One Body, 12/19/2016

SALVATION IS INCARNATE

"Prepare for the Lord a people well-disposed." -Luke 1:17

In today's Scripture readings, God takes the initiative to break into human lives and begin to deliver His people. His deliverance occurs through the conception of children, in this case Samson and John the Baptizer (see Jgs 13:5ff; Lk 1:13ff). These babies prepare the way for the birth of another Baby, Jesus.

God does not drop salvation impersonally out of the sky. He sends His salvation in incarnate, human packages to which we can relate and whom we can love.

God sends His salvation over time. He sends humans as forerunners to prepare the way before Him (see Lk 1:16-17). These human relationships warm our hearts and predispose us to love Him when He comes into our lives.

God sends His salvation through human love, the love of mothers and fathers. Instead of sending adult military rulers who are to be feared, God employs the intimacy of married love to prepare His way.

In summary, God's salvation is human, passionate, takes time to unfold, is as vulnerable as a tiny baby, involves relationships which prepare His way, and is welcoming of life. That is to say, His salvation is incarnate and personal.

Salvation history is rich. Be open to all facets of salvation. Accept Jesus Christ as Savior in all His richness.

Prayer: Father, may I never cheapen Your gift of salvation by the way I present it to others. I embrace Your saving love and I will share it with thousands.

Promise: "In these days the Lord is acting on my behalf; He has seen fit to remove my reproach among men." -Lk 1:25

Praise: "O Flower of Jesse's stem, You have been raised up as a Sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in Your presence; the nations bow down in worship before You. Come, let nothing keep You from coming to our aid."

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

PM eNewsletter 4th Sunday of Advent

December 18th, 4th Sunday of Advent

Jesus, next Sunday is Christmas, and we should have made the decision on what You want from us,
maybe it's our impatience, or anxiety, or fear.

Whatever is holding us back from truly being free to know, love, and serve You with our whole
heart, soul and mind.

Give us the grace to pray and get Your gift ready to be delivered to You on Christmas morning.

Thank You Jesus, for becoming one of us.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday CHRISTMAS BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT (2 Cor 5:7)
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=12/18/2016

"When Joseph awoke he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him." -Matthew 1:24

Joseph believed that Mary was pregnant not because of sexual relations, but by the Holy Spirit
(Mt 1:20). He believed this because of God's grace given him in a dream about an angel bearing
the message of the virgin-conception (Mt 1:20). Many people would consider Joseph one of the
biggest fools ever, but we recognize him as one of the greatest men of faith in history.

To not divorce himself from the first Christmas (see Mt 1:19), Joseph needed great faith - a
faith that would move much more than mountains (see Mt 17:20). The Lord gave him this
super-faith. Like Joseph, to receive Christ this Christmas season, we will also need the gift
of faith. Possibly, we will require great faith. We need the Advent gift of faith before we
can receive the gift of Jesus' Christmas coming.

Ask the Lord for a greater gift of faith (Lk 17:5). In these next few days, read, pray, and
study the teachings of the Church and the Bible. This will help you hear God and grow in faith
(Rm 10:17). The Lord wants your faith in Him to become stronger and deeper than ever. Let Him
gift you with great and greater faith.

Prayer: Father, "I believe! Help my lack of faith!" (Mk 9:24, our transl.)

Promise: "Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high
as the sky!" -Is 7:11

Praise: "O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, Who showed Yourself to Moses in the burning bush, Who
gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come, stretch out Your mighty hand to set us free."

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2016-12.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

WELCOME CHILDREN, MIGRANTS

"I FEEL COMPELLED"

... I feel compelled to draw attention to the reality of child migrants, especially the ones
who are alone. .. I ask everyone to take care of the young ... I ask everyone to help those
who ... are forced to live far.

SALVATION HISTORY

... We need to become aware that the phenomenon of migration is not unrelated to salvation
history, but rather a part of that history. One of God's commandments is connected to it:
"You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt"
(Ex 22:21); "Love the sojourner therefore; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt"
(Deut 10:19).

SIGN OF THE TIMES

This phenomenon constitutes a sign of the times, a sign which speaks of the providential work
of God in history and in the human community, with a view to universal communion. While
appreciating the issues, and often the suffering and tragedy of migration, as too the
difficulties connected with the demands of offering a dignified welcome to these persons, the
Church nevertheless encourages us to recognize God's plan.

CHRISTMAS BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT (2 Cor 5:7) - One Bread, One Body, 12/18/2016

Sunday, December 18, 2016, Fourth Sunday of Advent

Isaiah 7:10-14, Romans 1:1-7, Psalm 24:1-6, Matthew 1:18-24

CHRISTMAS BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT (2 Cor 5:7)

"When Joseph awoke he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him." -Matthew 1:24

Joseph believed that Mary was pregnant not because of sexual relations, but by the Holy Spirit (Mt 1:20). He believed this because of God's grace given him in a dream about an angel bearing the message of the virgin-conception (Mt 1:20). Many people would consider Joseph one of the biggest fools ever, but we recognize him as one of the greatest men of faith in history.

To not divorce himself from the first Christmas (see Mt 1:19), Joseph needed great faith - a faith that would move much more than mountains (see Mt 17:20). The Lord gave him this super-faith. Like Joseph, to receive Christ this Christmas season, we will also need the gift of faith. Possibly, we will require great faith. We need the Advent gift of faith before we can receive the gift of Jesus' Christmas coming.

Ask the Lord for a greater gift of faith (Lk 17:5). In these next few days, read, pray, and study the teachings of the Church and the Bible. This will help you hear God and grow in faith (Rm 10:17). The Lord wants your faith in Him to become stronger and deeper than ever. Let Him gift you with great and greater faith.

Prayer: Father, "I believe! Help my lack of faith!" (Mk 9:24, our transl.)

Promise: "Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!" -Is 7:11

Praise: "O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, Who showed Yourself to Moses in the burning bush, Who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come, stretch out Your mighty hand to set us free."

THE TREE OF LIFE (see Rv 22:2)

"A family record of Jesus Christ..." -Matthew 1:1

At Christmas time, many families put up a Christmas tree, and on it they hang ornaments. Often each person in the family will have an ornament bearing their name. It's easy to picture Mom and Dad grabbing little Johnny's ornament, polishing it, and telling joyful stories about Johnny's life as they hang it on the tree.

Each one of us is a member of God's family. We were created in His image (Gn 1:27). Jesus has carved each of us on the palm of His hand (Is 49:16). We are part of the family record of Jesus Christ, for better or for worse (Mt 1:1ff).

Imagine Jesus' mother Mary handing Him the ornament of your life to hang on the Holy Family's Christmas tree. You are so important to Jesus that He died on the cross just for you. As He receives your ornament, He caresses it, fingering your name with unimaginable love. He fondly cleans it to be without blemish, applies the Holy Spirit to polish it until it shines, kisses it, sings and rejoices over it (see Zep 3:17), and tenderly hangs it on His family tree. Afterwards, He sits before His family tree, gazes upon your part in His family, and thanks His heavenly Father for your life. Jesus loves you whether or not you have lived your life for His sake.

This Christmas, fill His heart with ever greater joy by offering your heart, mind, soul, hopes, and disappointments to Jesus. Give Him the Christmas present He most desires: your entire life.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may the ornament of my life bring a smile to Your lips, fruit for Your kingdom, and joy to Your heart.

Promise: "In Him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim His happiness." -Ps 72:17

Praise: "O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, You govern all creation with Your strong yet tender care."

CHRISTMAS RUSH

"Observe what is right, do what is just; for My salvation is about to come, My justice, about to be revealed." -Isaiah 56:1

St. John the Baptizer "was the lamp, set aflame and burning bright, and for a while you exulted willingly in his light" (Jn 5:35). Those who have accepted John's call to repentance are ready to meet Jesus this Christmas.

Yet many still refuse God's grace of repentance. These people will be given a "testimony greater than John's, namely, the works the Father has given [Jesus] to accomplish" (Jn 5:36). Ask the Lord to confirm the message of repentance and Christmas with accompanying signs (Mk 16:20). Pray the following prayer: Lord, "grant to Your servants, even as they speak Your words, complete assurance by stretching forth Your hand in cures and signs and wonders to be worked in the name of Jesus, Your holy Servant" (Acts 4:29-30). Expect "swift justice" (Lk 18:8). Expect many conversions. Expect the Acts of the Apostles to be manifested before your very eyes.

The Lord wants His house to be full (Lk 14:23), all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4), and all to have a real Christmas. He will do almost anything to lead someone to Him. After all, He became a man and died on the cross to give us salvation. Ask the Lord to rend the heavens and shake the mountains (Is 63:19). He wants to save us much more than we want to be saved. Come, Lord Jesus!

Prayer: Father, reveal to me any sin of mine.

Promise: "For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples." -Is 56:7

Praise: Peter went to Confession during Advent to prepare himself for the Christ Child.

LOOKING FOR LOVE

"What did you go out to see?" -Luke 7:24

Jesus asks the crowds and us: "What, really, did you go out to see - someone dressed luxuriously? Remember, those who dress in luxury and eat in splendor are to be found in" shopping malls, sleighs, and endless TV Christmas specials (see Lk 7:24-25). The crowds flock to see Santa, searching for glad tidings, good cheer, and perhaps, somehow, a measure of love.

Today, the Church proclaims to the searching crowds that good news and love are available in Jesus. He loves you "with enduring love" (Is 54:8). He has "sworn not to be angry with you, or to rebuke you" (Is 54:9). He assures you: "Though the mountains leave their place and the hills be shaken, My love shall never leave you nor My covenant of peace be shaken, says the Lord, Who has mercy on you" (Is 54:10).

Be like the wise men (Mt 2:11). They went out to see the Christ Child, and they found Love beyond all telling. Seek the Lord and He will be found (Jer 29:13-14). Look for Love, and He will find you.

Prayer: Father, may I look to You for love, not to the world.

Promise: "I assure you, there is no man born of woman greater than John. Yet the least born into the kingdom of God is greater than he." -Lk 7:28

Praise: Counting a friendship as worth more than money, Thomas forgave the loan his friend had promised to repay.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)
