FOOD PRICES
"A third time Jesus asked him, 'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?' Peter was hurt because He had asked a third time, 'Do you love Me?' So he said to Him: 'Lord, You know everything. You know well that I love You.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed My sheep.' " —John 21:17

If we love Jesus, we will feed His sheep. We will feed Jesus’ followers with physical food (see Mt 25:35) and with the Bread of Life, that is, Jesus (Jn 6:35). If we love Jesus, we will feed Christians with Jesus. We do this by sharing God’s Word (see Mt 4:4) and by inviting others to come to Jesus, join His Church, and receive the Body and Blood of Jesus (see Jn 6:55).

The night before Jesus died, He fed His sheep at the Last Supper by giving them His Body and Blood (see Mt 26:26ff). On the afternoon of the day Jesus rose, He fed His sheep by interpreting “for them every passage of Scripture which referred to Him” (Lk 24:27). Then He broke bread for them (Lk 24:30). Later, Jesus fed Peter and six other apostles with a breakfast of bread and fish (Jn 21:9). The risen Jesus revealed Himself to those “who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead” (Acts 10:41).

Before Jesus commanded us to feed His sheep, He showed us how to do this in several multi-dimensional ways. Ultimately, to love Jesus and to feed His sheep requires that we no longer do what we please but do what is against our wills (Jn 21:18). To love is to feed, and to feed is to follow Jesus even to death (Jn 21:19). Will you die to feed His sheep?

Prayer: Father, I offer my life for the feeding of Your people.

Promise: "You changed my mourning into dancing...O Lord, my God, forever will I give You thanks." —Ps 30:12, 13

Praise: Praise the Risen Jesus, Who fills us with His joy and His Spirit. Alleluia!

TIME OUT
"They wanted to take Him into the boat, but suddenly it came aground on the shore they had been approaching." —John 6:21

Jesus is the Lord of time. He can make time go backward (Is 38:8) or stand still (Jos 10:13). He made it possible for His disciples to go a few miles across the Sea of Galilee literally “in no time” (see Jn 6:21).

Jesus even gives us the power to move up the clock. The Blessed Virgin Mary seems to have moved up the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry (Jn 2:4ff). The Syro-Phoenician woman seems to have “fast forwarded” Jesus’ ministry to the Gentiles (see Mt 15:24, 28). Jesus even lets us hasten the time for His final coming (see 2 Pt 3:12). We are not helpless cogs on the wheel of time, but, as Christians, we share in Jesus’ lordship over time.

The Lord created time by creating the heavenly bodies (Gn 1:14). Satan used time to dominate us when he brought death into the world through our sins. Jesus freed us from the bondage of time and death by His death and Resurrection. He gave us power over time by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Jesus will finally end time when He comes back on the last day, at the end of time, to take us with Him to the happiness of eternity. Because of Jesus’ Resurrection, time is our servant, not our master. Praise Jesus, the Lord of time!

Prayer: Jesus, may I give You my time and let You be Lord of it.

Promise: "The word of God continued to spread, while at the same time the number of the disciples in Jerusalem enormously increased." —Acts 6:7

Praise: Pope St. Pius V accomplished much in his six-year pontificate. He implemented the decrees of the Council of Trent and promulgated the resulting catechism in 1566.

FOR BETTER AND FOR WORSE
"Day after day, both in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah." —Acts 5:42

When Sts. Peter and John proclaimed Jesus’ Resurrection after healing the man born lame, the Sadducees’ reaction was anger (Acts 4:1-2). As the apostles proclaimed the risen Christ through signs and wonders, the high priest and the Sadducees reacted with jealousy (Acts 5:17). They expressed this by having the apostles whipped (Acts 5:40). When St. Stephen proclaimed the risen Christ, the onlookers responded with violence. They ground their teeth, put their hands over their ears, attacked Stephen, and beat him with stones until they murdered him (Acts 7:54-58).

The more Jesus’ disciples proclaimed His Resurrection, the more they suffered persecution. The more intense the persecution, the more the disciples continued to proclaim the Resurrection. They considered it a privilege to be judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of Jesus’ name (Acts 5:41). “Both in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus” (Acts 5:42).

Are you witnessing for the risen Jesus? Are some people responding with faith and love? Are others filled with anger, jealousy, or violence toward you? How are you taking this? Are you rejoicing in suffering rejection and hostility for love of Jesus? Are you intensifying your proclamation of the risen Christ?

Prayer: Father, may I react to rejection by forgiving and by witnessing for Your Son with increased zeal.

Promise: "A vast crowd kept following Him because they saw the signs He was performing for the sick." —Jn 6:2

Praise: During the Fourteenth Century, several popes chose to reside in Avignon, France, rather than Rome. In 1377, St. Catherine successfully persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome. She was named a Doctor of the Church in 1970.

OBEDIENCE AND RATIONING - One Bread, One Body, 04/28/2022

OBEDIENCE AND RATIONING
"He does not ration His gift of the Spirit." —John 3:34

In today’s Gospel, we are told: “He does not ration His gift of the Spirit.” Many older readers might remember the shortages of material goods during the gasoline rationing in the early 1970s or the massive rationing during World War II. If you have lived during a time of rationing, you have learned how to adapt (Phil 4:11-12).

Jesus reveals in today’s Gospel passage that God does not ration His gift of the Holy Spirit (Jn 3:34). Perhaps many of us have become accustomed to living without the Holy Spirit, or with just a minimum influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Yet that is not God’s plan. He lavishes the Holy Spirit upon His people (Ti 3:6). The seeming “rationing” or shortage of the Holy Spirit is because of humanity’s disobedience, not because of God’s stinginess (see e.g. 2 Cor 6:12-13). St. Peter and the apostles reveal that God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him (Acts 5:32).

As we approach the great feast of Pentecost in five weeks, “test yourselves to see whether you are living in faith; examine yourselves” (2 Cor 13:5). Is the Holy Spirit stifled in your life because of disobedience? (1 Thes 5:19; Eph 4:30) Have you asked for the Holy Spirit? Like a loving parent, God wants to give you the Holy Spirit far more than you want to receive Him (Lk 11:13). Ask for the Holy Spirit and you will receive (Mt 7:7).

Prayer: Father, may I want to receive the Holy Spirit more than I want to draw my next breath. Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "Taste and see how good the Lord is; happy the man who takes refuge in Him." —Ps 34:9

Praise: St. Peter Chanel was ordained in France but desired to work in the missions. He got his wish and helped spread the Gospel to Oceania. When the son of a Polynesian chieftain requested Baptism, Peter's martyrdom soon followed.

LOVING PEOPLE FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT
"Go out now and take your place in the temple precincts and preach to the people all about this new life." —Acts 5:20

The Mass readings this week have been talking about being “born again,” begotten from above (see Jn 3:5). Just as an infant needs to be taught how to live in a new world, so “newborn” Christians need to be nurtured and taught. Thus, the angel commands the apostles to teach “the people all about this new life” (Acts 5:20).

Parents, do you remember when your newborn infant was delivered in the hospital room? The baby had never seen any light. Out of compassion, the hospital staff kept the lights dim in the birthing room, for even a dim light caused the infant to close its eyes tightly. The infant prefers darkness to light (see Jn 3:19). Infants need time, love, and instruction in order to adjust to living in the light.

Today’s Gospel proclaims that those living without Jesus prefer the darkness, even if the darkness makes them miserable (Jn 3:20). Potential Christians likewise need time, love, and instruction in order to learn how to live in the light. A doctor “delivers” a newborn infant. In a similar way, you are called to a “deliverance” ministry. The Lord is sending you to be like the medical personnel and hospital staff. You may be called to teach, mentor, love, or simply to keep a dim light present in a person’s life so they can learn to gradually adjust their spiritual eyes to a seemingly frightening world of light (see Is 9:1). Therefore, go out and take your place and teach the people all about this new life (see Acts 5:20).

Prayer: Father, use me to bring thousands of people "from darkness into [Your] marvelous light" (1 Pt 2:9).

Promise: "God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." —Jn 3:17

Praise: Don so closely followed the promptings of the Spirit that he spread God's love throughout the Midwestern United States.

MAKING A STATEMENT
"None of them ever claimed anything as his own; rather, everything was held in common." —Acts 4:32

Early Christians “shared all things in common” (Acts 2:44). This work of the Holy Spirit was a powerful witness to Jesus’ Resurrection (Acts 4:33). Sharing all things in common requires a miraculous unity. “The community of believers were of one heart” (Acts 4:32). Furthermore, sharing all things in common is motivated by such zeal for evangelization that we pool our resources to maximize our evangelistic outreach.

When we become one in heart, mind, and possessions, we begin to be one as Jesus and the Father are one. Then the world will believe that the Father has sent the Son (Jn 17:21). With power we bear “witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 4:33).

Sharing all things in common is so powerful because it is so difficult. It is close to impossible to share deeply and practically with others. Our pride and selfishness militate against this. Furthermore, in our highly secularized culture, individualism, independence, and privacy are almost gods, so sharing all things is out of the question. Therefore, when we share all things in common in our culture, we make quite a statement. People will be challenged to call us crazy or to believe in Jesus’ Resurrection.

Prayer: Father, by Your power may I do something that cannot be explained except by believing in Your Son's Resurrection.

Promise: "The wind blows where it will. You hear the sound it makes but you do not know where it comes from, or where it goes. So it is with everyone begotten of the Spirit." —Jn 3:8

Praise: The members of Marty's Home-Based Community pool their finances to give alms and support a full-time ministry volunteer.

THE MARK OF HUMILITY - One Bread, One Body, 04/25/2022

THE MARK OF HUMILITY
"Clothe yourselves with humility, because God 'is stern with the arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness.' " —1 Peter 5:5

After Mark quit the first missionary journey (Acts 13:13), he changed his mind and was willing to be taken on the second missionary journey (Acts 15:37). This may have been an act of repentance and humility. When St. Paul refused to take St. Mark (Acts 15:38), Mark must have eventually accepted this, for Mark was later on good terms with Paul (see Col 4:10; 2 Tm 4:11). This reconciliation required acts of humility from both Mark and Paul. Mark later humbled himself and sought to be discipled and fathered by St. Peter (see 1 Pt 5:13). Like all Christians, Mark was repeatedly called to humble himself. Mark accepted some of those calls.

As Mark humbled himself, the Lord showed great kindness to him (see 1 Pt 5:5). The Lord promised: “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted” (Mt 23:12). In Mark’s humility, the Lord exalted him by choosing him to compose one of the Gospels. The Lord even made Mark a canonized saint, internationally recognized for centuries as a model disciple. Even churches and cities are named after Mark. The Lord continues to work through Mark’s intercession and ministry in an amazing way.

We can also be exalted like Mark, if we will humble ourselves as Jesus did (see Phil 2:8). Humble yourself.

Prayer: Father, I'm never useless to You. I am all Yours.

Promise: "The man who believes in [the good news] and accepts baptism will be saved." —Mk 16:16

Praise: St. Mark dropped out of the first mission. He grew in the Spirit and later wrote a Gospel to proclaim Jesus throughout the ages.

I BELIEVE
"These have been recorded to help you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, so that through this faith you may have life in His name." —John 20:31

Alleluia! Jesus is risen! Has this last week been one of the greatest weeks in your life, not because of what you’ve done, but because of what the risen Lord has done? Or are you still locked in the upper room with all the doubting Thomases and fearful disciples? “Do not persist in your unbelief, but believe!” (Jn 20:27)

“There is nothing to fear” (Rv 1:17). Jesus is “the First and the Last and the One Who lives” (Rv 1:17-18). He once was dead but now He lives — “forever and ever” (Rv 1:18). He is “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4).

Respond to Him: “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28) Because you believe, “many signs and wonders” will occur “among the people” (Acts 5:12). Because you believe, “more and more believers, men and women in great numbers” will be “continually added to the Lord” (Acts 5:14). Because you believe, crowds will gather, “bringing their sick” and those “troubled by unclean spirits” (Acts 5:16), all of whom will be cured (Acts 5:16).

Jesus is out of the tomb forever. Yet many parts of His Body remain entombed. We must roll away the stone of doubt and come out into the glory of the risen Son. Easter is for believers. “Blest are they who have not seen and have believed” (Jn 20:29).

Prayer: Father, change my heart and my lifestyle. Through my witness of faith, bring many people to new freedom in Your Son.

Promise: "There is nothing to fear." —Rv 1:17

Praise: "If we have died with Him we shall also live with Him" (2 Tm 2:11). Jesus, thank You for Your mercy.

INEXPLICABLE LIVES
"Everyone who lives in Jerusalem knows what a remarkable show of power took place through them. We cannot deny it." —Acts 4:16

How do we know that Jesus has risen from the dead? The historicity of the Resurrection accounts in the Bible is more credible than other ancient documents because of the number and accuracy of the manuscripts of the Gospels and the reliability of the authors of the Gospel. This has been confirmed by the Gospel’s internal consistency and by archaeological discoveries. We have an intellectual, factual basis for believing that Jesus has risen.

However, to know the significance of His Resurrection is a matter of faith. We know by faith that Jesus’ Resurrection means that death has been put to death (Heb 2:14) and that we who believe in Him live a radically new life and will be raised by Him from the dead. Our faith in the Resurrection as the greatest and central event in human history is confirmed by the lives of Christians. Many Christians were demon-possessed before their conversions, as was Mary Magdalene (see Mk 16:9). Now these people are the most free people in the world. People who were trapped in “disbelief” and “stubbornness” (Mk 16:14) are now self-assured and bold in proclaiming the risen Christ (Acts 4:13). These conversions have happened by the millions across all cultures for two thousand years.

Jesus is risen! Our changed lives proclaim: “Jesus is risen!”

Prayer: Father, may my life be inexplicable apart from the resurrection of Jesus.

Promise: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation." —Mk 16:15

Praise: Praise Jesus, "the Resurrection and the Life"! (Jn 11:25) "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" (1 Cor 15:55) Alleluia forever!

"If we must answer today for a good deed done to a cripple and explain how he was restored to health, then you and all the people of Israel must realize that it was done in the name of Jesus Christ." —Acts 4:9-10

“Many wonders and signs were performed by the apostles” after the first Pentecost (Acts 2:43). The few healings recounted in Acts of the Apostles were chosen to be proclaimed not just because they were healings, but because of their special significance. The man lame from birth is someone we all can identify with. We may not be physically handicapped, but we all have been handicapped since birth in other ways. Because of cowardice, Peter was also handicapped. Some people have never taken even their first baby-step in evangelization. Many have been paralyzed by fear for as long as they can remember. Others have never prayed together with their spouses. These are severe spiritual handicaps.

However, the good news is that in the name of the risen Jesus we can be healed. This will prove that Jesus has risen and is alive right now. When we let Jesus heal us from a life-long handicap, we have an ideal forum for proclaiming His resurrection. Those who have known us for years will be astounded at our new freedom. They will ask how we were healed of our handicap. We will then be able to proclaim that “it was done in the name of Jesus” crucified and risen (Acts 4:10).

Prayer: Risen Jesus, may I let You heal me of a life-long handicap.

Promise: "Simon Peter went aboard and hauled ashore the net loaded with sizable fish — one hundred fifty-three of them!" —Jn 21:11

Praise: Alleluia! We draw our "life from the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Pt 1:3).

GHOSTS AND THE SPIRIT
"Touch Me and see that a ghost does not have flesh and bones as I do." —Luke 24:39

The first reaction to the risen Christ was and is: “In their panic and fright they thought they were seeing a ghost” (Lk 24:37). Jesus tried to change that first impression by showing His nail-scarred hands and feet and by eating a piece of fish (Lk 24:40, 42-43). They still thought He was a ghost. “Then He opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45), but the apostles still stayed behind locked doors (Jn 20:26). Only through the reception of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday did the disciples move from a ghostly awareness of the risen Jesus to a confirmed faith in Him.

The Holy Spirit is the down payment on and confirmation of all God’s works, including Jesus’ Resurrection (2 Cor 1:21-22). The Spirit makes the Resurrection real for us — a concrete, practical, flesh-and-blood, life-changing experience. Most Christians today have not moved past that false first impression of the risen Christ as a ghost. Our timidity and fears betray that fact. We need the Holy Spirit to confirm our faith in the risen Lord. Then we will act normally, run out into the streets, and declare the glory of God (Acts 2:4ff).

Prayer: Jesus, may I act normally for someone who has seen the dead come to life. May unbelievers be amazed at me, my life, and my lifestyle.

Promise: "When God raised up His Servant, He sent Him to you first to bless you by turning you from your evil ways." —Acts 3:26

Praise: "God raised [Jesus] from the dead, and we are His witnesses" (Acts 3:15).

GIVING LIFE TO A “CULTURE OF DEATH” - One Bread, One Body, 04/20/2022

GIVING LIFE TO A "CULTURE OF DEATH"
"When the people saw him moving and giving praise to God, they recognized him as that beggar who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. They were struck with astonishment — utterly stupefied at what had happened to him." —Acts 3:9-10

Fifty days after Jesus’ Resurrection, about three thousand people believed that He was risen from the dead and that He would also raise from the dead those who believed in Him (see Jn 6:40). The rest of the people of the world were confused and enslaved by their ignorance of the afterlife and their fear of death (Heb 2:15). How could a few thousand people reach the rest of the world with the Good News of Jesus risen? We currently find ourselves in a similar situation. Today, the Lord is calling the two billion Christians in the world to reach six billion who do not know or believe in Jesus, “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25).

In a few short years, the early Church reached millions of people with the Good News of the risen Jesus. They did this by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Spirit, they preached the Good News of Jesus. Signs, wonders, and healings accompanied their preaching (Mk 16:17-18). Sometimes the Lord first healed people to give the Church an opening for proclaiming the risen Christ (see Acts 3:11-12). Often the Lord punctuated the Church’s preaching with a healing as an exclamation point.

Let’s reach our “culture of death” with the message of resurrection and life. Receive the Holy Spirit! Proclaim God’s Word! Heal in Jesus’ name (see Acts 3:6). Jesus is risen! Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, I will do anything to reach as many as possible with the Good News of Jesus risen (see 1 Cor 9:19).

Promise: "Were not our hearts burning inside us as He talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" —Lk 24:32

Praise: Praise: "You will show me the path of life, fullness of joys in Your presence, the delights at Your right hand forever" (Ps 16:11).

A LONG SHOT AND A SURE THING - One Bread, One Body, 04/19/2022

A LONG SHOT AND A SURE THING
"Jesus said to her, 'Mary!' She turned to Him and said [in Hebrew], 'Rabbouni!' (meaning 'Teacher'). Jesus then said, 'Do not cling to Me.' " —John 20:16-17

Mary Magdalene was not only the first person to meet the risen Jesus in the Gospels but possibly the only person fully transformed by the risen Christ for the first fifty days after the Resurrection. Many others met the risen Christ, but we have no record of them centering their lives on and witnessing to the risen Lord. Even Jesus’ disciples stayed locked in the upper room although they had met Jesus risen more than once (Jn 20:26). Yet Mary Magdalene understood and gave the Resurrection message during the first fifty days.

This fact makes us realistic and optimistic. We would be naive to presume we will automatically have Easter this year. Easter 2022 may not be that much different from previous Easters. Yet, at the same time, Mary Magdalene makes us optimistic. Mary shared the Easter message for the first fifty days of the first Easter. She seemed to be one of the least likely candidates to meet the risen Christ, since she had been possessed by seven devils (Lk 8:2). However, the risen Lord chose to come to her.

Your life may be scarred by the sin and bondage of the past. You may “get no respect,” and even have trouble respecting yourself. Nonetheless, the risen, glorified Lord wants to come to you as He did to Mary Magdalene. Let the risen Jesus transform you this Easter season.

Prayer: Jesus, You are a long shot and a sure thing if I believe in You and obey. Come, risen Jesus!

Promise: "You must reform and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, that your sins may be forgiven; then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." —Acts 2:38

Praise: Jesus is "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). Praise Jesus forever!

"THE WORD OF THE LORD"
"Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them." —Acts 2:14

Put yourself in St. Peter’s place. You’re standing before several thousand people, many of whom think you’re drunk. This is your chance to witness to the risen Christ. What are you to say? Will you mention that the risen Jesus personally appeared to you on Resurrection Day? (Lk 24:34) Will you mention Jesus’ evening appearance or that occasion a week later when Thomas touched His wounds? (Jn 20:19-29) How about the time when the risen Christ told you how to catch one-hundred and fifty-three fish, or when He ascended into Heaven? (Jn 21:4ff; Mk 16:19) What about the risen Jesus appearing to five-hundred brothers at once? (1 Cor 15:6)

Surprisingly, Peter never mentions any of these eyewitness accounts of the risen Christ. Instead, Peter talks about Psalm 16 (Acts 2:25-28). This psalm burned in Peter’s heart as a prophecy of the risen Christ (Lk 24:32). When Peter shared this, it did something for the crowd. They no longer thought Peter was drunk, but three thousand people asked to be baptized that day (Acts 2:41).

The Word of God introduces us to the risen life. The Word must come alive before we deeply believe Jesus is alive. When God’s Word almost jumps off the page, we know that the tomb is empty and He’s alive.

“Indeed, God’s word is living and effective” (Heb 4:12). His words are “spirit and life” (Jn 6:63).

Prayer: Jesus, may Your Word burn in my heart within a week (Lk 24:32).

Promise: "Jesus stood before them and said, 'Peace!' The women came up and embraced His feet and did Him homage. At this Jesus said to them, 'Do not be afraid! Go and carry the news to My brothers.' " —Mt 28:9-10

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is risen! "Let us be glad"! (Ps 118:24)

RISEN LIFE IN JESUS
"Since you have been raised up in company with Christ, set your heart on what pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God's right hand. Be intent on things above rather than on things of earth." —Colossians 3:1-2

Alleluia! Jesus is risen! His tomb is empty! “Death has no more power over Him” (Rm 6:9). Alleluia!

Because we’ve been baptized into Christ, we have died with Him (Rm 6:3). “If we have been united with Him through likeness to His death, so shall we be through a like resurrection” (Rm 6:5). This very day we have already “been raised up” with Jesus to share in His glorious, heavenly, risen life (Col 3:1).

For many in the United States, the joy of Easter means returning to the things we gave up for Lent. It’s back to chocolate, sweets, soft drinks, ice cream, etc. Yes, we do have to “celebrate and rejoice” on Easter (Lk 15:32), and these treats help us to celebrate, but if we find our joy simply in returning to the old life we lived before Lent, we will have missed Easter.

Jesus is the reason for the season! He is risen! We are invited to a risen life with Him that is so new, powerful, and exciting that we can’t sufficiently celebrate it with the “old yeast,” that is, our old joys and old lifestyle (1 Cor 5:7). Let us “be intent on things above rather than on things of earth” (Col 3:2). Let’s celebrate the fifty-day Easter season by immersing ourselves in God’s Word, which is sweeter than the tastiest candy (Ps 119:103), and in the Eucharist, the “bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Cor 5:8).

Prayer: Father, give me new, risen ways to celebrate "this new life" (Acts 5:20). Praise and glory to You, risen Jesus!

Promise: "He saw and believed." —Jn 20:8

Praise: "This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it" (Ps 118:24). Jesus is risen! Alleluia!

DID YOU MISS ME? - One Bread, One Body, 04/16/2022

DID YOU MISS ME?
"I opened to my Lover — but my Lover had departed, gone. I sought Him but I did not find Him; I called to Him but He did not answer me." —Song of Songs 5:6

On this Holy Saturday, there is no Mass, no Eucharistic presence in the tabernacles of our Churches, no Eucharistic readings proclaimed for the world to hear. Jesus, our Life (Jn 11:25; 14:6), has fallen to the ground and died (Jn 12:24). He has been buried in the tomb, and we who are baptized into Him have also been buried with Him (see Rm 6:4). We are deprived of His special Eucharistic presence until tonight’s Easter Vigil.

Many might say, “So what’s the big deal? Just wait until tonight or tomorrow and you’ll get your Jesus back as usual.” They would be speaking pragmatic words, but love isn’t pragmatic or practical. The toddler cries when its beloved mother leaves the room. The lover in the Song of Songs passage above searches all night long for her missing Lover (Sg 5:6). We who are living our Baptisms to the full are so joined to Jesus that we miss Him terribly when we are deprived of His presence. When we have centered our lives on the Mass, we miss His presence in the Eucharist so much because we love Him so much.

Do you miss the Eucharistic Jesus today? Do you even know He is missing? If not, today is your chance to grow in love. Ask the Holy Spirit to pour out the love of God in your heart (Rm 5:5). If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then may Jesus’ absence today make your heart overflow with love for Him.

Prayer: "As the hind longs for the running waters, so my soul longs for You, O God. Athirst is my soul for God, the living God. When shall I go and behold the face of God?" (Ps 42:2-3)

Promise: (none)

"IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR WINGS" (Ps 36:8)
"I am thirsty." —John 19:28

Jesus was thirsting for the people of Jerusalem to “come to” Him (see Mt 11:28). He told them: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem...how often have I yearned to gather your children, as a mother bird gathers her young under her wings, but you refused Me” (Mt 23:37). Jesus thirsted for a people who would accept His saving love, listen to His words, and put them into practice (Mk 4:8-9).

Jesus poured out His life for His beloved people, teaching, healing, and working miracles in their sight. “Despite His many signs performed in their presence, they refused to believe in Him” or gather to Him (Jn 12:37). Therefore, Jesus would instead gather and save all people through His ministry of suffering. He prophesied: “I — once I am lifted up from earth” on the cross “will draw all men to Myself” (Jn 12:32).

Jesus is thirsting to gather all people under His outstretched, crucified arms, now nailed to the wood of the cross (Jn 19:28).  Give Jesus a drink (Jn 4:7). Satisfy His yearning and thirsting. Stand in the shadow of His cross — at the feet of the crucified Jesus. Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life. Let Him gather you under His wings (see Mt 23:37). Listen to and obey His every word.

Prayer: Jesus, Lamb of God, may Your "blood be on us and on our children" (Mt 27:25). Wash us clean of sin through the blood of Your cross.

Promise: "Through His suffering, My Servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear." —Is 53:11

THE SACRAMENT OF HUMILITY
"This is My body, Which is for you." —1 Corinthians 11:24

Jesus “humbled Himself” (Phil 2:8). He emptied Himself of the glory He shared with the Father in heaven (Jn 17:5). He stooped down to caress and wash the sandal-clad, road-dusty feet of those who would shortly betray, abandon, and deny Him (Jn 13:5). He set aside His glory and took on the appearance of bread and wine to become one body with us. In His Eucharistic Body, given for us (1 Cor 11:24), He humbly became one with us who have participated in crucifying Him through our sins (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). He became even more humble by greatly and gladly desiring to do all these things (Lk 22:15) for us, His beloved.

Jesus said: “What I just did was to give you an example: as I have done, so you must do” (Jn 13:15). This is impossible for us in our proud humanity. So, Jesus gives us Himself in the Eucharist in the humble form of bread and wine. He commands us: “Take this and eat it...this is My body” (Mt 26:26). When we “eat this bread and drink this cup” (1 Cor 11:26), we “carry about in our bodies the dying” and the humility and the love of Jesus (2 Cor 4:10). We die to ourselves and let Him live in us (Gal 2:19-20). Jesus lives in us and we in Him (Jn 6:56; 17:23).

When you receive Jesus’ Eucharistic Body and Blood at Mass today, receive His humility. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord (1 Pt 5:6) and embrace the total humility of the greatest Lover.

Prayer: Jesus, You gave Your body for me. I give my body to You.

Promise: "How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the Lord." —Ps 116:12-13

Praise: "O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine."

GORY GLORY DETAILS
"For Your sake I bear insult, and shame covers My face." —Psalm 69:8

Since the apostles ran away at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion and those few who stayed would probably not want to talk about the gory details of Jesus’ passion and death, the Gospel writers may not have known or did not want to express many of the details of Jesus’ sufferings. However, some details of His sufferings have been revealed in prophecy and psalms, especially by Isaiah. When we see a crucifix, we always see the front of Jesus. However, Isaiah reveals the condition of His back in addition to His beard and face. The Messiah says: “I gave My back to those who beat Me, My cheeks to those who plucked My beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting” (Is 50:6).

Jesus’ back must have been bruised, almost shredded. Handfuls of hair were pulled out of His bloody beard. His face was beaten almost past recognition, with spit, blood, and dirt pasted on it, “so marred was His look beyond that of man, and His appearance beyond that of mortals” (Is 52:14). His heart was broken. He “looked for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters” (Ps 69:21) but found none. Rather, they put gall in His food and in His thirst they gave Him vinegar to drink (Ps 69:22; cf Lk 23:36). He suffered mercilessly to give us mercy. He suffered because He loves us. These details of His sufferings even more clearly manifest His love for us.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You...

Promise: "My appointed time draws near. I am to celebrate the Passover with My disciples in your house." —Mt 26:18

Praise: At a Healing Service, Jesus healed Sharon of her inability to walk.

JESUS AND JUDAS
"Immediately after, Satan entered his heart...No sooner had Judas eaten the morsel than he went out. It was night." —John 13:27, 30

Many people are imprisoned in a tomb of unforgiveness. A heavy stone stands between them and the risen Christ. Some refuse to forgive others, especially family members. Many maintain God has forgiven them, but they can’t forgive themselves. This is a self-deception.

The Bible speaks not of those who refused to forgive themselves but of those who refused to believe in God’s forgiveness. Judas is a prime example. He despaired of being forgiven, so he hung himself (Mt 27:5). Like Judas, some feel they have committed the unforgivable sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Mt 12:31). However, this unforgivable sin is the blasphemy of denying the Holy Spirit’s revelation that we can always be forgiven.

Many go to Confession but still feel guilty. They may say they believe God has forgiven them, but they actually don’t believe. We are saved in every circumstance by faith. We are saved by faith from unforgiveness and from the despair of Judas. By faith, roll away the stone of unforgiveness.

Prayer: Father, Abba, we have no right not to believe that You have forgiven us. Give us faith as we hear Your Word (see Rm 10:17).

Promise: Though I thought I had toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent my strength, yet my reward is with the Lord, my recompense is with my God." —Is 49:4

Praise: Bernadette spends a holy hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament each day before Mass.

HIM OR SELF? - One Bread, One Body, 04/11/2022

HIM OR SELF?
"Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples (the one about to hand Him over), protested..." —John 12:4

The four Suffering Servant readings from Isaiah during Holy Week reveal that there is no self-centeredness in the Suffering Servant (Is 42:1-7; Is 49:1-6; Is 50:4-9; Is 52:13—53:12). Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, a holy family devoted to Jesus, reveal a focus on Jesus and a lack of self-interest as they minister hospitality to Jesus (Jn 12:1ff). Sadly, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus, showed a total focus on himself and a lack of focus on Jesus during the week he most needed to fix his eyes on Jesus (see Heb 3:1; 12:2).

Judas figures prominently in the Holy Week readings for Mass because his spiritual stance could become our own. He is a reflection of our fallen human nature. Judas accuses Mary and tries to make her selfless actions of love for Jesus seem selfish. This accusation imitates Satan, who accuses God’s holy people night and day (Rv 12:10). Additionally, Judas sought his own gain, considered Jesus’ gain to be a “waste” (Mk 14:4), and resisted Jesus’ outreach to him (Mt 26:14). May the same not be said of us who seek to follow Jesus.

As Holy Week begins, is there any “self” in our lives? This Holy Week, let us obey these words of Jesus, words which Judas heard but rejected: “Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in My steps” (Lk 9:23).

Prayer: Father, show me clearly any areas of my life where I have turned my back on Jesus. Help me to offer myself completely to You.

Promise: "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?" —Ps 27:1

Praise: Mel, a company vice-president, receives the Eucharist each morning before starting his workday.

ROLE MODEL
"When they came to Skull Place, as it was called, they crucified Him there and the criminals as well, one on His right and the other on His left." ––Luke 23:33

“One of the criminals hanging in crucifixion blasphemed [Jesus]: ‘Aren’t You the Messiah? Then save Yourself and us.’ But the other one rebuked him: ‘Have you no fear of God, seeing you are under the same sentence?’ ” (Lk 23:39-40) Today’s Gospel passage from St. Luke confirms that every action has a consequence. Are we living for the world like the bad thief? Or do we have the eternal perspective of the good thief?

This passage changed my life. Many years ago, at Mass, our merciful Savior cut through my apathy. As I listened to the good thief chastise the bad thief, I became completely focused. I was no longer daydreaming. The passage concluded with those most precious words of our Lord, “I assure you: this day you will be with Me in paradise” (Lk 23:43). It was the first time a Bible verse gripped me to the core. I immediately thought, “If that remorseful criminal can be saved, why not me?”

But why was the good thief saved? In addition to repenting, he performed several “good works.” He:

  • admonished the sinner (see Lk 23:40),
  • admitted his wrongdoing and submitted to justice (see Lk 23:41), and
  • humbled himself and made an act of faith (see Lk 23:42).

Jesus canonized a saint into heaven from the cross! How will this change your perspective?

Prayer: Father, my sins are as a drop of water in Your eyes. I will not reject Your ocean of mercy.

Promise: "The Lord God is My help, therefore I am not disgraced." ––Is 50:7

Praise: "Blessed is the reign of our father David to come!" (Mk 11:10)

RATTLING BONES - One Bread, One Body, 04/09/2022

RATTLING BONES
"He prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation — and not for this nation only, but to gather into one all the dispersed children of God." —John 11:51-52

Ezekiel prophesied that the chosen people were a field of dry bones (Ez 37:1-2). They had been dead for centuries. Then he prophesied restoration, unity, and peace (Ez 37:21ff). How can dry bones be restored? By nothing other than resurrection of the dead. How can we be restored to unity and peace? By nothing less than resurrection.

We’ve tried to improve the human condition with education, law and order, communism, capitalism, secularism, and militarism. However, they were all in vain. The only way to deal with the dry bones of our human condition is resurrection. Therefore, Jesus is the only Answer for humanity because He alone can die and rise. Our only hope is to be united with Jesus’ death and Resurrection by faith in Him.

We are saved by faith from a “dry bones” existence. We express our faith in Jesus through Baptism. We are baptized into Jesus and into His death and Resurrection (Rm 6:3-5). The dry bones rattle and come together (Ez 37:7). We are born again and restored.

A week from today is the Easter Vigil. Many throughout the world will be baptized, and all the baptized will be called to renew their baptismal commitment to Jesus. Give yourself to Jesus, Who has turned dry bones into the abundant life (Jn 10:10).

Prayer: Jesus, in this upcoming Holy Week, may I become aware of what You have done for me. You alone have made my life worth living.

Promise: "If we let Him go on like this, the whole world will believe in Him." —Jn 11:48

Praise: "God is our refuge and our strength. The Lord of Hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob" (Ps 46:2, 8).
