HOW CAN THIS BE?

"Blest is she who trusted." -Luke 1:45

Once on this feast day, I taught a Bible Study for the clients at a pregnancy center in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Cincinnati. Before a client can receive a distribution of material items from the center, he or she is required to attend a Bible Study, where the spiritual distribution of faith and encouragement occurs. We studied the differences between Mary's reaction (Lk 1:34) to the annunciation of Jesus' conception and birth as compared to Zechariah's reaction (Lk 1:18) to the annunciation of St. John the Baptist's conception and birth.
Though a teenager lacking the formal education of Zechariah the priest, Mary had no doubt that God was almighty and could do anything. Mary's questioning focused on "how" God was going to make this conception happen. On the other hand, Zechariah, the well-educated priest stationed in God's temple, doubted that God could do what the angel was saying. Mary and Zechariah asked questions that sounded similar. However, the hidden condition of their hearts was laid bare in the angel's reaction. In addition, Mary's response of traveling ninety miles "in haste" (Lk 1:39) to bring help and encouragement to the elderly Elizabeth during the end of her pregnancy gives evidence of her belief in God's promises.
Today, lift up in prayer all women who will find out this day that they are pregnant. Some will be well-educated, some not. Pray that their reaction will be one of expectant faith and hope, trusting that God has great things in mind for them and for their unborn child.

Prayer: Father, in Your eyes, there is no such thing as an unplanned pregnancy. Pour out a love of life onto our nation today.

Promise: "Do not grow slack but be fervent in spirit." -Rm 12:11

Praise: Mary's kindness toward her elderly relative helped release the power of the Holy Spirit into the world (Lk 1:41ff).

MER-SEE - One Bread, One Body, 5/30/2013

Thursday, May 30, 2013

MER-SEE

"I want to see." -Mark 10:51

Do you have 20/20 spiritual vision? Like Balaam, is your eye so true that you see "what the Almighty sees, enraptured, and with eyes unveiled"? (Nm 24:4) Are you "gazing on the Lord's glory with unveiled faces"? (2 Cor 3:18) Many Christians can see enough to realize they need to see much more clearly spiritually. Consequently, we should pray with the blind Bartimaeus: "I want to see" (Mk 10:51).
Before we make our prayer for sight, we should pray for God's mercy (Mk 10:47). Often the Lord appears to not answer this prayer immediately while those around us respond to this prayer negatively (see Mk 10:48). However, we should keep praying for mercy until the Lord calls us to come to Him and ask for sight (see Mk 10:49ff).
We pray for mercy before asking for sight because our sins have caused our impaired vision. Therefore, we must repent and receive God's forgiveness and mercy before having our spiritual sight restored.
This shows us how valuable Confession is. It is the difference between seeing or being "blinded by the god of the present age" (2 Cor 4:4). Go to Confession, receive God's mercy, open your eyes, and see.

Prayer: Father, may I see mercy and mercifully see.

Promise: "The Most High possesses all knowledge, and sees from of old the things that are to come; He makes known the past and the future, and reveals the deepest secrets." -Sir 42:18-19

Praise: Tim grew up in a coal mining town and spent much of his childhood and youth fighting other boys. He gave his life to Jesus, and now he uses his toughness to defeat Satan, lead ministries, and teach Scripture in a straightforward proclamation of truth.

YOU ASKED FOR IT

"We want You to grant our request." -Mark 10:35

Jesus commands us: "Ask, and you will receive" (Mt 7:7). However, the Lord tells us: "You do not obtain because you do not ask. You ask and you do not receive because you ask wrongly, with a view to squandering what you receive on your pleasures" (Jas 4:2-3). Often the Lord must say to us: "You do not know what you are asking" (Mk 10:38). We must ask the Lord for His grace, blessings, forgiveness, and mercy, but we must not ask in ignorance or selfishness.
If we base our prayers on the Bible, we will be more likely to ask in the right way. For instance, the writer of Sirach can teach us to ask God for help. In just a few verses, he prays:
* "Come to our aid, O God of the universe" (Sir 36:1).
* "Put all the nations in dread of You!" (Sir 36:1)
* "Give new signs and work new wonders; show forth the splendor of Your right hand and arm" (Sir 36:5).
* "Rouse Your anger, pour out wrath, humble the enemy, scatter the foe" (Sir 36:6).
* "Show mercy to the people called by Your name" (Sir 36:11).
* "Give evidence of Your deeds of old; fulfill the prophecies spoken in Your name" (Sir 36:14).
* "Reward those who have hoped in You" (Sir 36:15).

We ask for all these things not to get what we want but that "it will be known to the very ends of the earth" that Yahweh is "the eternal God" (Sir 36:17). Ask from the Bible and for the Lord.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me about asking.

Promise: "The Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve - to give His life in ransom for the many." -Mk 10:45

Praise: Jesus healed Kim of breast cancer.

BAPTIZED, PRIESTLY, AND SACRIFICIAL - One Bread, One Body, 5/28/2013

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Sirach 35:1-12, Psalm 50:5-8, 14, 23, Mark 10:28-31

BAPTIZED, PRIESTLY, AND SACRIFICIAL

"Gather my faithful ones before Me, those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice." -Psalm 50:5

Every baptized person is a priest - not in the same way as a priest ordained by a bishop - but nonetheless a priest. A priest offers "gifts and sacrifices for sins" (Heb 5:1; 8:3). A baptismal priest is to offer the following sacrifices:
* his or her body as a living sacrifice (Rm 12:1),
* "a sacrifice of praise" (Heb 13:15),
* "good deeds and generosity," for "God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind" (Heb 13:16),
* the great oblation of keeping God's law (Sir 35:1),
* the peace offering of observing the commandments (Sir 35:1),
* the sacrifices of charity and almsgiving (Sir 35:2), and
* the atonement of avoiding injustice (Sir 35:3).

The Church teaches: "For all [the laity's] works, prayers, and apostolic undertakings, family and married life, daily work, relaxation of mind and body, if they are accomplished in the Spirit - indeed even the hardships of life if patiently born - all these become spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. In the celebration of the Eucharist these may most fittingly be offered to the Father along with the body of the Lord" (Catechism, 901).
Baptismal priests, sacrifice.

Prayer: Father, may my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day be a sacrifice pleasing to You.

Promise: "Many who are first shall come last, and the last shall come first." -Mk 10:31

Praise: David fasts twice a week in penance and in petition for abortionists.

SUPER RELATIONSHIPS

"The two shall become as one." -Mark 10:8

The Lord has taken the relationship of marriage and raised it to a supernatural level. "They are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore let no man separate what God has joined" (Mk 10:8-9).
Moreover, the Lord has raised the relationships of friendship, brotherhood, and sisterhood to a supernatural level. In our new life, through grace, faith, and Baptism, we have become more than friends and more than natural brothers and sisters. In the old covenant, the Lord graced people with faithful friendships, which were "sturdy shelters," "treasures," and "life-saving remedies" (see Sir 6:14-16). However, these beautiful friendships were rare (see Sir 6:6). In the new covenant, the Lord has given us a hundred times as many brothers and sisters than we had before we left everything to follow Jesus (Mk 10:29-30). Moreover, these relationships are deeper than humanly possible. By God's grace, we can love our brothers and sisters to the point of laying down our lives for them (1 Jn 3:16). We can be one with them as Jesus and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). We can have Trinity-unity.
Live the new, supernatural relationships of the new life in Christ.

Prayer: Father, may all my relationships be in You. May they be pure, loving, and holy.

Promise: "A kind mouth multiplies friends, and gracious lips prompt friendly greetings." -Sir 6:5

Praise: Herman was too shy to even greet people during the sign of peace at Mass. A friend wrote him a letter telling him to let his light shine, for no one lights a lamp to be put under a bushel basket (Mt 5:15-16). Jesus instantly changed his heart. Thirty years later, Herman has ministered the light of Jesus to thousands of people.

"NOT-TY" OR NICE?

"Say not..." -Sirach 5:1, 3, 4, 6

* "Say not: 'I have the power' " (Sir 5:1). Rather, say: "In weakness power reaches perfection" (2 Cor 12:9).
* "Say not: 'Who can prevail against Me?' " (Sir 5:3) Rather, say: "Without Jesus I can do nothing" (see Jn 15:5).
* "Say not: 'I have sinned, yet what has befallen me?' " (Sir 5:4) Rather, say: "The Lord, indeed, knows how to rescue devout men from trial, and how to continue the punishment of the wicked up to the day of judgment" (2 Pt 2:9).
* "Say not: 'Great is His mercy; my many sins He will forgive' " (Sir 5:6). Rather, say (and do): "Return to the Lord and give up sin" (Sir 17:20, 21).

Jesus said: "I assure you, on judgment day people will be held accountable for every unguarded word they speak. By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned" (Mt 12:36-37). Watch what you say. Speak the truth; do the truth (Eph 4:15).

Prayer: Father, be Lord of my mouth and life.

Promise: "Any man who gives you a drink of water because you belong to Christ will not, I assure you, go without his reward." -Mk 9:41

Praise: Mariano, a Christian businessman, witnesses to every customer with whom he deals. His secret of evangelization: "I listen attentively to them and am interested in what is going on in their life. Soon, when they return the favor, I tell them what Jesus is doing in my life."

WISE?

"Wisdom instructs her children and admonishes those who seek her." -Sirach 4:11

Do you want to be wiser? Do you want to more fully develop the charism of wisdom, which you received when you were baptized and confirmed? If you become wise, you will inherit glory (Sir 4:13), receive the Lord's love (Sir 4:14) and His blessings (Sir 4:13), judge nations (Sir 4:15), be happy (Sir 4:18), and know God's secrets (Sir 4:18).
To become wise, you must love (Sir 4:12), seek (Sir 4:12), hold fast to (Sir 4:13), serve (Sir 4:14), obey (Sir 4:15), hearken to (Sir 4:15), trust (Sir 4:16), and walk with (Sir 4:17) wisdom. If you fail to do this, wisdom will abandon you and deliver you "into the hands of despoilers" (Sir 4:19). The choice is either wisdom and gain, or abandonment and loss. To become wise is very rewarding and very demanding. Not to seek wisdom is devastating.
Therefore, seek and love wisdom and Jesus, Who is our Wisdom (1 Cor 1:30). Seek wisdom no matter how much you have to suffer and sacrifice (Prv 4:7). As Solomon did, ask God for wisdom before all else (1 Kgs 3:9-12). Pray: "Give me Wisdom, the Attendant at Your throne, and reject me not from among Your children" (Wis 9:4).

Prayer: Father, without doubting I pray for and receive wisdom (Jas 1:5-6).

Promise: "Anyone who is not against us is with us." -Mk 9:40

Praise: St. Rita's constant prayer for her abusive husband bore fruit as he repented of his sins on his deathbed.

A FEARFUL PENTECOST

"You who fear the Lord, wait for His mercy." -Sirach 2:7

"You who fear the Lord, trust Him" (Sir 2:8). "You who fear the Lord, hope for good things" (Sir 2:9). "Has anyone persevered in His fear and been forsaken?" (Sir 2:10)
The writer of Sirach repeatedly calls us to fear the Lord, that is, to be awed in the presence of God. We received the fear of the Lord as a gift of the Spirit when we were baptized and confirmed (see Is 11:2-3). We are called to live in the fear of the Lord and make "steady progress in the fear of the Lord" (Acts 9:31). If we do, our "reward will not be lost" (Sir 2:8); we will receive "lasting joy and mercy" (Sir 2:9). "Fear of the Lord is glory and splendor, gladness and a festive crown. Fear of the Lord warms the heart, giving gladness and joy and length of days. He who fears the Lord will have a happy end; even on the day of his death he will be blessed. The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord" (Sir 1:9-12).
Pray for a reverent fear to overtake you (Acts 2:43) and for great fear to come on the whole Church (Acts 5:11). May all who attended Pentecost last Sunday be steeped in the fear of the Lord.

Prayer: Father, may I tremble at Your Word (Is 66:2).

Promise: "Trust God and He will help you; make straight your ways and hope in Him." -Sir 2:6

Praise: St. Christopher shouted during his martyrdom: "I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death."

THE YEAR OF FAITH

"What an unbelieving lot you are!" -Mark 9:19

Because of their lack of faith, Jesus' disciples couldn't help a man by freeing his son from a mute and deaf spirit (Mk 9:18). The father himself couldn't help free his son without praying for greater faith (Mk 9:24). The greater our faith, the better we can help, free, and love people. Therefore, we too should cry out to the Lord: "I do believe! Help my lack of faith!" (Mk 9:24, our transl.)
Do you love the Lord and people so much that you are trying to grow in faith? "Faith is confident assurance concerning what we hope for, and conviction about things we do not see" (Heb 11:1). Faith in the Lord is the result of a good relationship with Him. Therefore, to grow in faith means to communicate more deeply with the Lord, to spend more time with Him, and to serve Him in greater self-sacrifice.
In October 2012, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed a Year of Faith. We still have several months remaining in the Year of Faith, so during this time, let's give Jesus prime time daily and deeply. Let's make this a year of increased faith. Let's grow in union with Him and thereby in faith. Then we will be able to show our love for Him and others as never before. Lord, "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5).

Prayer: Holy Spirit of Pentecost, produce in me the fruit of faith (Gal 5:22).

Promise: "Fear of the Lord is glory and splendor, gladness and a festive crown. Fear of the Lord warms the heart, giving gladness and joy and length of days." -Sir 1:9-10

Praise: St. Bernardine of Siena helped reform the Franciscans by his preaching on penance and conversion. He was well known for propagating devotion to the Name of his Best Friend, Jesus.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/19/2013

"Then He breathed on them and said: 'Receive the Holy Spirit.' " -John 20:22

Many of us reading this reflection are baptized and confirmed Catholics. It was our privilege to
sacramentally "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). However, since God the Father
has blessed us with intellect and free will, we may choose to "stifle the Spirit" (1 Thes 5:19)
in our lives. Will you take advantage of the Feast of Pentecost, or let another year come and go?

Guard against not recognizing your true dignity as an adopted child of God (Rm 8:14-15). Though
we are each unique, we "were baptized into one body" (1 Cor 12:13). How are you using your
spiritual gifts to advance the Kingdom of God? Sin is our greatest enemy, and no sin is
committed in a vacuum. "If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit
you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live" (Rm 8:13). Let's live for God and
for one another.

Jesus, the Word of God, has revealed everything necessary for our salvation. Jesus said, "I will
ask the Father and He will give you another Paraclete - to be with you always" (Jn 14:16). Trust
Jesus and His Word. "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Jesus, I ask You to re-invigorate the Holy Spirit in my life and in the life of the
Church. Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "The Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you
in everything, and remind you of all that I told you." -Jn 14:26

Praise: Praise the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, our Hope! Alleluia!

This Week's Featured Brochure

Praying for a New Pentecost
http://presentationministries.com/brochures/PrayPentecost.asp

Bible Prayers for the Coming of the Holy Spirit

In 1897 Pope Leo XIII was inspired to call every Catholic Church in the world to pray nine
days for the coming of the Spirit. We pray this novena from the day after the feast of the
Ascension to the day before Pentecost each year. Pope John Paul II has reiterated Pope Leo's
call to pray for the coming of the Spirit.

I prayed this novena in 1975, and it was one of the greatest events in my life. The Spirit
was stirred up in me (see 2 Tm 1:6-7), my Confirmation was renewed, and I was filled with the
Holy Spirit. In thanksgiving to the Spirit, I have compiled these Bible-based prayers for a
new Pentecost. If we pray these prayers sincerely (see Lk 11:13), we will see the Spirit do
more than we have ever asked for or imagined (Eph 3:20).

THIRSTING FOR THE SPIRIT

Father, I repent of stifling the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19) by giving in to selfish desires. May
I let the Spirit lust against the desires of the flesh (Gal 5:17) so that I ...............

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

GOD'S MERCY

"AN UNFAILING LOVE"

God's love for us is so great, so deep; it is an unfailing love, one which always takes
us by the hand and supports us, lifts us up and leads us on.

"NEVER LOSE TRUST"

Let us never lose trust in the patience and mercy of God!

LOVE AND PATIENCE

God is patient with us because He loves us, and those who love are able to understand,
to hope, to inspire confidence: they do not give up, they do not burn bridges, they are
able to forgive.

UNHINDERED - One Bread, One Body, 5/18/2013

Pentecost Novena Day 9 - Saturday

Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love.
V. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created,
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of Your faithful, grant that by that same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Read:
Acts 28:16-20, 30-31
John 21:20-25

Be silent

Pray: Father, renew my Baptism and Confirmation. Stir into flame the gifts of the Spirit in my life (see 2 Timothy 1:6-7).

On or near Pentecost, ask another Christian to lay hands on you (see Acts 19:6) and pray for you to receive the Holy Spirit. After receiving these prayers, thank the Holy Spirit for coming to you, go to Mass as often as possible, and share your faith in Jesus. Come, Holy Spirit!

UNHINDERED

"For two full years Paul stayed on in his rented lodgings, welcoming all who came to him. With full assurance, and without any hindrance whatever, he preached the reign of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ." -Acts 28:30-31

In its original Greek, the Acts of the Apostles ends with the word translated "without hindrance" (Acts 28:31). This seems an abrupt and less than grand finale. Moreover, it seems unusual for Luke to claim that Paul proclaimed God's kingdom "without hindrance" after Paul had been confined to a room for two years, under house arrest, with a soldier at the door (Acts 28:16).
Luke ends Acts by showing that there is no chaining God's word (2 Tm 2:9) and no stopping the Christian people. You can lock us up, but we'll still take the Gospel to the ends of the earth by world-changing intercession, mountain-moving faith, and enemy-converting redemptive suffering. You can kill us, but we will rise from the dead and be resurrection witnesses with even greater power.
The only thing that can stop us is us. Repent. Live in faith. Obey God. Receive the Spirit. Be His witness (Acts 1:8). Renew the face of the earth (Ps 104:30). Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost! Come again! Come now! Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, may this be the greatest Pentecost.

Promise: "There are still many other things that Jesus did, yet if they were written about in detail, I doubt there would be room enough in the entire world to hold the books to record them." -Jn 21:25

Praise: Pope St. John I suffered imprisonment for love of truth and unity during which he ultimately died for his faith in Jesus.

PENTECOST AND THE POPE

"...Peter was to glorify God." -John 21:19

Jesus said that He would found His Church on the Rock, Peter. Jesus entrusted to Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Mt 16:18-19). Jesus has been consistent with that statement. In the last chapter of the four Gospels, Jesus asks Peter three times: "Do you love Me?" (see Jn 21:15-17) He chose Peter to be the preacher of Pentecost (Acts 2:14) and the first preacher to the Gentiles (Acts 10:5ff). Jesus anointed Peter with such healing power that the masses were healed merely by Peter's shadow falling on them (Acts 5:15-16).
Peter continues to be an important part of God's plan, especially through his successors, the Popes. The early Church needed Peter, and the present Church does as well. Peter was the leader of the first Pentecost. Do you think it will be different this Pentecost? Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday (Heb 13:8). His calls are irrevocable (Rm 11:29). Jesus doesn't change His plans; He continues them. Peter, the Pope, and Pentecost continue to go together.
To receive the Holy Spirit in fullness, listen to and obey the Pope, as the early Church listened to Peter at the first Christian Pentecost. Listen to the Pope about repentance, conversion, holiness, purity, lifestyle, birth control, family, and community. In obeying Peter's successors, you obey Jesus Who chose them (see Lk 10:16). Then you receive the Holy Spirit, Who is "given to those that obey" Jesus (Acts 5:32).

Prayer: Father, may I love to be submissive to the authority You have established. Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "When Jesus had finished speaking He said to him, 'Follow Me.' " -Jn 21:19

Praise: Dan harbored resentment for many years against his stern, unloving father. Jesus softened both of their hearts and now they are close.

SEVEN DAYS MAKE ONE WEAK

"I do not pray for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their word." -John 17:20

When St. Paul was on trial before the Jewish Supreme Court, the Sanhedrin, he tricked his enemies into fighting each other so that he could get off the hook. However, Paul's stratagem backfired on him. The dispute between Paul's enemies grew so turbulent that the Roman "commander feared they would tear Paul to pieces. He therefore ordered his troops to go down and rescue Paul from their midst and take him back to headquarters" (Acts 23:10). That night, after Paul's plans had failed and he was sitting in jail, the Lord appeared to Paul and announced that Paul would be His witness in Rome, the center of the Western world (Acts 23:11). In our weakness, God's power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9).
On this seventh day of the Pentecost novena, we need to realize our weakness so that we will depend on and cry out for the power of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8). When Jesus had ascended and His apostles were at their weakest, they received the Holy Spirit. Throughout history, Christians have received the Spirit when persecuted and even imprisoned for their faith in Jesus. The Lord has "singled out the weak of this world" to receive the Spirit and "to shame the strong" (1 Cor 1:27).
To receive the Spirit, choose the weakness of gospel poverty, persecution, obscurity, docility, simplicity, and sacrifice. Embrace the weakness of the cross (see 2 Cor 13:4), then receive the Spirit.

Prayer: Jesus, without You I can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "I have given them the glory You gave Me that they may be one, as We are One - I living in them, You living in Me." -Jn 17:22-23

Praise: Sarah has received God's gift of healing and finds that when she prays for people they are sometimes healed immediately.

GOD'S ENLARGING WORD

"I commend you now to the Lord, and to that gracious word of His which can enlarge you." -Acts 20:32

As Pentecost approaches, the Lord shines the spotlight ever more brightly on His Word. In the sixth day of the Pentecost novena, we are praying for a great outpouring and reception of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. One of the first actions the Holy Spirit does is to break open the Word of God, make it come alive (Heb 4:12), and use it to enlarge His people (Acts 20:32).
On the first Christian Pentecost, the Spirit inspired St. Peter to preach from the Psalms (Acts 2:25ff). The Spirit then immediately used the proclaimed Word to bring three-thousand people to faith (Acts 2:41). When the Holy Spirit wields the Word of God (Eph 6:17), great growth and enlarging soon follow.
If we are serious about praying for the Holy Spirit, we need to dive into the Scriptures as never before. Many who receive the Holy Spirit find that one of the first effects is for the Scriptures to suddenly "leap off the page." However, no passages jump off the page at us if we haven't opened our Bibles. Jesus has given us God's Word (Jn 17:14). He also pours out the Spirit on us to make God's Word multiply in us. Let us accordingly do our part by reading our Bibles daily. Abide in God's Word (Jn 8:31), be enlarged (Acts 20:32), and thereby enlarge God's kingdom.

Prayer: Father, may Catholics increasingly read, pray, study, share, teach, and obey Your Word.

Promise: "I consecrate Myself for their sakes now, that they may be consecrated in truth." -Jn 17:19

Praise: St. Isidore, a farmer, began each day with morning Mass. He and his wife are both canonized saints.

"THE SPIRIT AND THE BRIDE" (Rv 22:17)

"The saying in Scripture uttered long ago by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David was destined to be fulfilled in Judas." -Acts 1:16

While the Church, about to be born at Pentecost, was praying in the upper room (see Acts 1:14), Peter stood up and quoted two obscure sentences from the Psalms (Acts 1:20). The first one, Psalm 69:26, if applied to Judas Iscariot's apostleship, sounded as if no one should take Judas' place, although the quote was probably applied to the field in which Judas died. The second quote, Psalm 109:8, if applied to Judas, seems to call for apostolic succession. The apostles accepted Peter's prophetic interpretation of these two Scripture passages. Thus, we have the first apostolic succession. This is the only way by which we can objectively determine whether a group which calls itself a "church" is truly the Church founded by Jesus. Thus, Peter's primacy, his leadership of the apostles, and apostolic succession were already beginning to be established in the Church in the womb of the upper room before the Church was born at Pentecost.
The Holy Spirit and the Church, especially the hierarchical aspects of the Church, go together. The coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church were simultaneous. The Spirit and the Bride of Christ, the Church, both say the same thing (see Rv 22:17). The Spirit is Truth (1 Jn 5:6), and the Church is the pillar and bulwark of truth (1 Tm 3:15). If we are in the Spirit, we must be in the Church in a deep way.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, produce in me Your fruit of love (Gal 5:22), especially love for the Church (see Eph 5:25).

Promise: "It was not you who chose Me, it was I Who chose you to go forth and bear fruit. Your fruit must endure." -Jn 15:16

Praise: St. Matthias rejoiced when whipped as punishment for teaching about Jesus (Acts 5:40). He was continually "teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah" (Acts 5:42).

QUESTION BOX

"There is no need for anyone to ask You questions." -John 16:30

There is no need for us to question God in a prideful, doubting way. Zechariah questioned God's messenger by asking: "How am I to know this?" (Lk 1:18) He was struck dumb for nine months.
However, we do have a need to question God in a humble, loving way. Mary questioned the same archangel as Zechariah did. In all humility, she asked: "How can this be since I do not know man?" (Lk 1:34) The angel did not strike her dumb. He promised that the Holy Spirit would come upon Mary (Lk 1:35). Then Mary conceived Jesus, God, by the power of the Spirit.
During this Pentecost novena, in a spirit of humility, ask God questions. Question even yourself and your motives. Ask others the question: "Did you receive the Holy Spirit?" (Acts 19:2) Questions asked in humility lead to answers - even to the reception of the Holy Spirit in a new Pentecost (see Acts 1:6ff). Jesus promised: "Ask, and you will receive" (Mt 7:7). Ask questions, and you may receive the Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, may I ask questions, find peace even in suffering, take courage, and overcome the world (Jn 16:33).

Promise: "As Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came down on them and they began to speak in tongues and to utter prophecies. There were in the company about twelve men in all." -Acts 19:6-7

Praise: At a local parish, a large group of Catholics regularly prays to Our Lady of Fatima each Saturday to observe her requests for regular prayer, reparation, and consecration.

PM eNewsletter Ascension Sunday

May 12th Ascension Sunday

Jesus, we celebrate Your Ascension into heaven.

You came to be one of us and pay the price for our sins.

You absolutely deserve to rise up into heaven and sit on Your throne of glory.

Jesus, teach us to be truly grateful to You, and the Father, for loving us and for the Holy
Spirit to guide us.

Christ, we are so weak, and so normal, and we have such a short attention span, that we so
soon forget our fervor.

Rekindle in us the fire of the Holy Spirit, that we may be renewed, and receive Your gifts
that will let us do Your will all the days of our lives.

Let us prepare for Pentecost by going to confession, and getting any stain of sin off of
our souls, and open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to come and make His abode in us.

Let us go on fire with desire to serve You in all things, and in all of our actions.

Let us be Your hands, Your heart, Your eyes, in other words Your instuments of love.

Thank you Jesus.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday LOST LOVE OR NEW LOVE?
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/12/2013

"He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight." -Acts 1:9

Scripture links "the promise of the Father" (Lk 24:49) to the Ascension of Jesus to the Father
(Acts 1:4-5). Just before Jesus ascended to His Father, He told His disciples, "Wait, rather,
for the fulfillment of My Father's promise...within a few days you will be baptized with the
Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:4-5).

Jesus promised that we would do greater by far than He did (Jn 14:12). How could this be? Jesus
explained that this is because He goes to the Father (Jn 14:12-13). When Jesus goes to the
Father, sparks fly, love flies. The Holy Spirit is often defined as the love which arcs between
the Father and the Son. Their love cannot be contained, and thus the Spirit arcs wildly between
Them. So great is this passionate love that nothing in the universe could possibly hold back
the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit descend to us on earth (Eph 4:11). Heaven is now open
to us, and we are opened to heaven.

We who are joined with Jesus through Baptism are also lifted up in Spirit and filled with the
Spirit, the "promise of the Father." Let Jesus' Ascension result in great love in heaven and
immeasurable power and holiness on earth. "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Father, on this third day of the Pentecost Novena, make me see the inadequacies of my
love for You and make me desire new and greater life and love.

Promise: "I send down upon you the promise of My Father." -Lk 24:49

Praise: "He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit; seen by the angels;
preached among the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up into glory" (1 Tm 3:16).

May
I let the Spirit lust against the desires of the flesh (Gal 5:17) so that I ...............

teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS

SHAPED BY JESUS

Encountering Jesus Christ shapes peacemakers, committing them to fellowship and to
overcoming injustice.

A PEACEMAKER ...

The peacemaker, according to Jesus' beatitude, is the one who seeks the good of the other,
the fullness of good in body and soul, today and tomorrow.

GOD IS ON YOUR SIDE

In the eyes of the world, those who trust in God and His promises often appear naive or
far from reality. Yet Jesus tells them that not only in the next life, but already in this
life, they will discover that they are the children of God , and that God has always been
and ever will be, completely on their side. They will understand that they are not alone,
because He is on the side of those committed to truth, justice and love.
