MAKING GOD IN OUR IMAGE

"He called in his servants and handed his funds over to them according to each man's abilities." -Matthew 25:14

The servant who received one thousand silver pieces was condemned because he did not use what he had received to obtain more (Mt 25:26ff). By saying that he was afraid of his master, the servant tried to justify hiding the money rather than using it (Mt 25:25). Then he tried to justify his fear by claiming that his master was "a hard man", who was so unreasonable as to reap where he did not sow (Mt 25:24).

Nevertheless, the facts are that the master had sown five thousand, two thousand, and one thousand silver pieces. On this occasion, he was not expecting something from nothing but something more from what he had sown. Moreover, the master complimented his two profitable servants. He promoted them and invited them to share his joy (Mt 25:21-23). He didn't seem to be "a hard man" to those who did their jobs.

When we serve the Lord badly, we are often projecting our own warped self-image onto God. When we see and love the Lord as He truly is, we will serve Him as He deserves to be served. Love God; serve God.

Prayer: Father, make me a good slave of Yours. May I serve You gladly (Ps 100:2).

Promise: "God chose those whom the world considers absurd to shame the wise; He singled out the weak of this world to shame the strong. He chose the world's lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were something." -1 Cor 1:27-28

Praise: Robert gladly volunteers at a food pantry, to feed the poor and show them the love of Christ.

WON BY ONE

"The message of the cross is complete absurdity to those who are headed for ruin, but to us who are experiencing salvation, it is the power of God." -1 Corinthians 1:18

The Corinthian church lacked no spiritual gift (1 Cor 1:7). It could have been a powerhouse for God's kingdom, but was instead bogged down with problems. The typical Corinthian Christian was as undeveloped as a spiritual baby (1 Cor 3:1).

The Corinthians wasted much of their awesome potential because of their disunity. They broke into various factions (1 Cor 1:12). Paul called them to repentance, and thereby unity, by calling them to the cross. He proclaimed the cross of Jesus as the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:24, 18). Paul determined that while he was with the Corinthians, he "would speak of nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2).

There are more Christians in the world than ever before. We as the Church have the authority of the keys of God's kingdom (Mt 16:19). We have all the power we need to win the world for Christ (Eph 1:13). However, we are weak and often spiritually paralyzed because of our disunity. We must repent, come to the cross, and accept Jesus' reconciliation through His blood (Col 1:20).

Jesus is praying that we become one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Answer His prayer. Be the Church in power and victory.

Prayer: Father, may I "never act out of rivalry or conceit" but "think humbly of others as superior to" myself (Phil 2:3).

Promise: "The moral is: keep your eyes open, for you know not the day or the hour." -Mt 25:13

Praise: Father Nick wakes up three hours early to prepare for morning Mass, in prayer and reflection.

COMING FOR SURE - One Bread, One Body, 8/30/2018

COMING FOR SURE

"Stay awake, therefore! You cannot know the day your Lord is coming." -Matthew 24:42

In the Nicene Creed, we profess that Jesus "will come again in glory." After the Consecration at Mass, we proclaim that "Christ will come again." After praying the "Our Father" at Mass before receiving Communion, we pray and "wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ."

"But who will endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears?" (Mal 3:2) They will be:

* those saved by Jesus (Rv 7:9-10),
* those faithful, farsighted servants working to feed others physically and spiritually (Mt 24:45),
* those "who have survived the great period of trial; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb" (Rv 7:14),
* those purified by Jesus (Mal 3:2-3),
* the repentant and holy (2 Pt 3:11), and
* those who are part of the "Church, holy and immaculate, without stain or wrinkle or anything of that sort" (Eph 5:27).

Yes, Jesus is coming back, and He will strengthen us "to the end, so that" we "will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus" (1 Cor 1:8). "May He preserve you whole and entire, spirit, soul, and body, irreproachable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thes 5:23). "The One Who gives this testimony says, 'Yes, I am coming soon!' Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!" (Rv 22:20)

Prayer: Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus, today.

Promise: "The Son of Man is coming at the time you least expect." -Mt 24:44

Praise: Every reception of the Eucharist reminds Thomas of his first and of his last.

PURE PLUS - One Bread, One Body, 8/29/2018

Wednesday, August 29, 2018, Beheading of St. John the Baptist

2 Thessalonians 3:6-10, 16-18, Psalm 128:1-2, 4-5, Matthew 23:27-32 or, Mark 6:17-29
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082918.cfm

PURE PLUS

"John had told Herod, 'It is not right for you to live with your brother's wife.' Herodias harbored a grudge against him for this and wanted to kill him." -Mark 6:18-19

Many of us have accepted God's grace to be sexually pure. Many have also told their Christian friends about the importance of having victory over sexual temptations. In talking with our Christian friends, we have probably decried the breakdown of sexual morality. Yet are we proclaiming the truth and freedom of sexual purity to the Herodiases and Herods of our time? This does not mean that we gossip about them behind their backs but that we lovingly and confidentially face them with God's call to repentance and purity.

It is not good enough to be sexually pure and keep it to ourselves. We must proclaim the truth, freedom, and love of sexual purity to individuals in our promiscuous, confused, sexually addicted, self-deceived, and self-hating society. Some will hear our message and be freed for true love. Others will rage when we love them enough to tell them the truth about sin. They will try to persecute us with a vengeance. We may even be killed as St. John the Baptist was. This will result in many conversions and in our resurrection into the eternal life and joy of heaven.

Therefore, be pure and courageous. Speak "the truth in love" (Eph 4:15). Speak of purity, repentance, and life-giving love. Speak of Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, make me pure as You are pure (1 Jn 3:3).

Promise: "Indeed, when we were with you we used to lay down the rule that anyone who would not work should not eat." -2 Thes 3:10

Praise: St. John the Baptist "heralded the coming of Jesus by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel" (Acts 13:24).

ARE YOU EXPECTING? (SEE AUG. 27) - One Bread, One Body, 8/28/2018

Tuesday, August 28, 2018, St. Augustine

2 Thessalonians 2:1-3, 14-17, Psalm 96:10-13, Matthew 23:23-26
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082818.cfm

ARE YOU EXPECTING? (SEE AUG. 27)

"On the question of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to Him..." -2 Thessalonians 2:1

The Thessalonians had been seduced into becoming agitated and terrified because they thought the world was about to end (2 Thes 2:2). Some Thessalonians even quit their jobs because they thought they had only a few days left on the earth (2 Thes 3:7ff). Also, some of the Corinthians divorced their unbelieving spouses, possibly because they expected the Lord to come and the world to end at any minute (1 Cor 7:12ff). These early Christians were wrong in their reaction to the possibility that the world would end. However, they were not wrong in expecting the world's end and Christ's return.

The worst mistake we can make is to ignore the fact that Jesus will come back to earth at a time we least expect (Lk 12:40). "The day of the Lord will come like a thief, and on that day the heavens will vanish with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and all its deeds will be made manifest. Since everything is to be destroyed in this way, what sort of men must you not be! How holy in your conduct and devotion, looking for the coming of the day of God and trying to hasten it!" (2 Pt 3:10-12)

The early Christians had one word on the tips of their tongues. They repeatedly cried out "Maranatha!" ("Come, Lord Jesus!") (Rv 22:20; 1 Cor 16:22) to which the Lord responds: "Yes, I am coming soon!" (Rv 22:20)

Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus, come!

Promise: "First cleanse the inside of the cup so that its outside may be clean." -Mt 23:26

Praise: While in his final illness, St. Augustine had the seven penitential psalms (Ps 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143) hung on his bedroom wall so he could read them in a spirit of repentance.

EXPECTING TO SEE GROWTH - One Bread, One Body, 8/27/2018

Monday, August 27, 2018, St. Monica

2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 11-12, Psalm 96:1-5, Matthew 23:13-22

EXPECTING TO SEE GROWTH

"It is no more than right that we thank God unceasingly for you, brothers, because your faith grows apace and your mutual love increases." -2 Thessalonians 1:3

Paul thanked the Lord unceasingly for the Thessalonian Christians because their faith and mutual love grew. Paul expected the early Christians to grow in holiness and for their growth to be clearly recognizable. Thus, Paul could thank the Lord for their growth.

If someone asked us whether our faith has grown in the last twelve months, many of us would be at a loss to answer. We probably have an ambiguous idea that we should grow in holiness but are not focused on our growth so that we can readily evaluate it. Yet isn't this partly the reason for the traditional Catholic practice of a daily examination of conscience? While we cannot quantify spiritual growth as precisely as other types of growth, growth in holiness can be determined to a point that we can thank the Lord for it.

Therefore, let us ask the Lord what areas in us needing growth He will be working on from now till Advent. Let us ask Him what steps He wants us to take in cooperating with His grace. Let us expect to see ourselves grow in holiness and to begin Advent thanking the Lord for this growth.

Prayer: Father, may I want to grow in holiness more than I want pleasure or success.

Promise: "We pray for you always that our God may make you worthy of His call, and fulfill by His power every honest intention and work of faith." -2 Thes 1:11

Praise: St. Monica expected her prayers to be answered, and so she loved her son into conversion through prayers, fasting, and vigils.

PM eNewsletter 21st Sunday in ordinary time

August 26th 21st Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church heralds another tremendous man of faith.

St. John the Baptist, who without fear, proclaimed what was truth till he was finally beheaded.

Jesus, give us that steadfastness of heart that we will first of all learn the truth as taught
by the catechism of the Catholic church, and then be willingly in love, as we proclaim it to
others.

Let us be heralds of Your love and let others see the Christ in us.

Let us stand for Your law of love, and let us be as fearless as St. John was in standing for
what was right.

Thank You Jesus.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday HIS EUCHARISTIC CHALLENGE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/26/2018

"Jesus was fully aware that His disciples were murmuring in protest at what He had said. 'Does it
shake your faith?' He asked them." -John 6:61

Jesus challenges us to believe His mysterious statement: "The bread I will give is My flesh, for
the life of the world" (Jn 6:51). A typical reaction to this challenge is to ask the question:
"How can He give us His flesh to eat?" (Jn 6:52) Jesus does not directly answer this question.
Rather, He extends an even more puzzling challenge by repeatedly insisting that we eat His Flesh
and drink His Blood (Jn 6:53-58). If we do this, He will raise us from the dead (Jn 6:53-54), live
in us and we in Him (Jn 6:56), and give us life forever (Jn 6:58). If we do not eat His Body and
drink His Blood, we "have no life in" us (Jn 6:53).

Then "many of His disciples remarked, 'This sort of talk is hard to endure! How can anyone take it
seriously?' " (Jn 6:60) "From this time on, many of His disciples broke away and would not remain
in His company any longer" (Jn 6:66). Nevertheless, Jesus continues to insist that we believe in
and receive His Body and Blood.

Joshua challenged the people: "Decide today whom you will serve" (Jos 24:15). Jesus, the new Joshua
(Jeshua), also challenges us to decide today about living to receive His Body and Blood. Will we
receive Him in repentance, joy, and love? Will we receive Holy Communion as often as possible and
center our lives on the Eucharist? Jesus is challenging us. Our actions will speak louder than our
words. Will we accept Jesus' challenge?

Prayer: Father, grant me the grace to come to the eucharistic Jesus (see Jn 6:65).

Promise: "Defer to one another out of reverence for Christ." -Eph 5:21

Praise: Praise Jesus, the Gate, the Door, the only Way! Praise You, Jesus, our "Leader in the work
of salvation" (Heb 2:10).

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-08.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

CHRISTIANS AND MISSION

NO GENERATION GAP

To grow in the grace of faith bestowed on us by the Church's sacraments plunges us into that great
stream of witnesses who, generation after generation, enable the wisdom and experience of older
persons to become testimony and encouragement for those looking to the future. And the freshness and
enthusiasm of the young makes them a source of support and hope for those nearing the end of their
journey. In this blend of different stages in life, the mission of the Church bridges the
generations; our faith in God and our love of neighbor are a source of profound unity.

JOY AND ENTHUSIASM

This transmission of the faith, the heart of the Church's mission, comes about by the infectiousness
of love, where joy and enthusiasm become the expression of a newfound meaning and fulfillment in
life. The spread of faith "by attraction" calls for hearts that are open and expanded by love... That
expansion generates encounter, witness, proclamation; it generates sharing in charity with all those
far from the faith, indifferent to it and perhaps even hostile and opposed to it.

"EVER YOUNG"

...The Christian faith remains ever young when it is open to the mission that Christ entrusts to us.
"Mission revitalizes faith" (Redemptoris Missio, 2) in the words of Saint John Paul II...

HIS EUCHARISTIC CHALLENGE - One Bread, One Body, 8/26/2018

Sunday, August 26, 2018, 21st Sunday Ordinary Time

Joshua 24:1-2, 15-18, Ephesians 5:21-32, Psalm 34:2-3, 16-21, John 6:60-69
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082618.cfm

HIS EUCHARISTIC CHALLENGE

"Jesus was fully aware that His disciples were murmuring in protest at what He had said. 'Does it shake your faith?' He asked them." -John 6:61

Jesus challenges us to believe His mysterious statement: "The bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world" (Jn 6:51). A typical reaction to this challenge is to ask the question: "How can He give us His flesh to eat?" (Jn 6:52) Jesus does not directly answer this question. Rather, He extends an even more puzzling challenge by repeatedly insisting that we eat His Flesh and drink His Blood (Jn 6:53-58). If we do this, He will raise us from the dead (Jn 6:53-54), live in us and we in Him (Jn 6:56), and give us life forever (Jn 6:58). If we do not eat His Body and drink His Blood, we "have no life in" us (Jn 6:53).

Then "many of His disciples remarked, 'This sort of talk is hard to endure! How can anyone take it seriously?' " (Jn 6:60) "From this time on, many of His disciples broke away and would not remain in His company any longer" (Jn 6:66). Nevertheless, Jesus continues to insist that we believe in and receive His Body and Blood.

Joshua challenged the people: "Decide today whom you will serve" (Jos 24:15). Jesus, the new Joshua (Jeshua), also challenges us to decide today about living to receive His Body and Blood. Will we receive Him in repentance, joy, and love? Will we receive Holy Communion as often as possible and center our lives on the Eucharist? Jesus is challenging us. Our actions will speak louder than our words.

Praise You, Jesus, our "Leader in the work of salvation" (Heb 2:10).

HUMILITY AND REALITY - One Bread, One Body, 8/25/2018

Saturday, August 25, 2018, St. Louis, St. Joseph Calasanz

Ezekiel 43:1-7, Psalm 85:9-14, Matthew 23:1-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082518.cfm

HUMILITY AND REALITY

"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." -Matthew 23:12

If we don't humble ourselves, the Lord will do it for us. We can either start off humbled and end up exalted, or start off exalted and end up humbled. Obviously, it behooves us to humble ourselves now. Yet to do this we must know what humility is.

Humility is not humiliation. True humility is not putting ourselves down but facing reality. The word "humility" derives from the root word meaning "earth." Humility is being "down-to-earth," realistic. Reality is that we are "earthen vessels" (2 Cor 4:7). We are weak, but He is strong. We cannot save ourselves, no matter how hard we try (Ps 49:8; Is 26:18). Reality is that we are utterly dependent on Jesus for life and eternal life. Reality is that we can trust our heavenly Father completely. He is perfectly faithful. Reality is that we are temples of the Holy Spirit. By faith, we can claim power from on high (Lk 24:49).

Therefore, humility is facing the reality that we can't control our own lives and that we don't have to provide for ourselves. We can be different from others, even vulnerable, because we have a loving Father. We can live simply because God will take care of us. We can live boldly, freely, and with purity because we have a power within us that is from above us: the power of the Spirit. Humility is living in the realities of holiness, simplicity, and making ourselves vulnerable to persecution. Let us humble ourselves.

Prayer: Father, I decide to humble myself. I ask for the grace to have more simplicity and less timidity.

Promise: "There I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. I heard a sound like the roaring of many waters, and the earth shone with His glory." -Ez 43:2

Praise: Though an earthly king, St. Louis was renowned for his concern for the poor. Each day, he invited thirteen of them to eat with him.

KNOW BODY - One Bread, One Body, 8/24/2018

Friday, August 24, 2018, St. Bartholomew

Revelation 21:9-14, Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18, John 1:45-51
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082418.cfm

KNOW BODY

"Do you believe just because..." -John 1:50

"When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, He remarked: 'This man is a true Israelite. There is no guile in him' " (Jn 1:47). Nathanael (Bartholomew) asked Jesus, "How do You know me?" (Jn 1:48) This is a revealing response. The typical response to a total stranger would be to ask: "How do you know this information about me?" Yet Nathanael asked: "How do You know me?" The brief encounter between Nathanael and Jesus resulted in a supernatural knowledge, a binding of hearts, a joining of the divine and the human. Nathanael had an instant personal encounter with Christ and realized that Jesus knew him, loved him, and was the Son of God! (Jn 1:49)

Jesus' comment is also revealing. He asked if Nathanael came to believe just because He encountered Jesus personally (Jn 1:50). A life-changing personal encounter with Jesus is absolutely critical. However, Jesus went on to say that Nathanael would see much greater things than that (Jn 1:50). Nathanael would see the glory of heaven (Jn 1:51). He would see the glory of the Church, the new Jerusalem (Rv 21:9ff). He would be chosen as an apostle (Mk 3:18), the foundation of the body of Christ, the Church (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14; Col 1:18). Nathanael would see Jesus as not just his Lord, but as Lord of heaven and earth.

May we all encounter Jesus personally and accept Him as our Lord and Savior. Then may we all accept Him for everything that He truly is, in all His glory and splendor.

Prayer: Jesus, may I love the Church as You do (Eph 5:25).

Promise: "The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb." -Rv 21:14

Praise: St. Bartholomew told Jesus, "You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel" (Jn 1:49).

THE PROPHECY WHICH IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE - One Bread, One Body, 8/23/2018

Thursday, August 23, 2018, St. Rose of Lima

Ezekiel 36:23-28, Psalm 51:12-15, 18-19, Matthew 22:1-14
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082318.cfm

THE PROPHECY WHICH IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE

"I will sprinkle clean water upon you." -Ezekiel 36:25

The Lord promised through the prophet Ezekiel: "I will sprinkle clean water upon you to cleanse you from all your impurities, and from all your idols I will cleanse you" (Ez 36:25). The Lord promised us a total purification far beyond any purification ever attempted. This purification will be part of a change of our nature. We can be born again, begotten from above (see Jn 3:3, 5). The Lord promised: "I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts" (Ez 36:26). Our new nature will not only be new, but we will even be made sharers in the divine nature (2 Pt 1:4). The Lord then suggested that He would live within us. He promised: "I will put My Spirit within you and make you live by My statutes" (Ez 36:27). Through our Baptism, we will live in the Holy Trinity and the Trinity will live in us (see Jn 17:23).

The purpose of life is to receive the fulfillment of Ezekiel's prophecy in today's first eucharistic reading. The purpose of life is to receive a new nature, to be born again by Baptism into Jesus, and to live that Baptism in total commitment to Jesus.

Let us thank the Lord always for the new birth in Baptism and the life of faith and faithfulness to the Lord. Let us love people enough to tell as many as possible about the purpose of life. "Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, He Who in His great mercy gave us new birth" (1 Pt 1:3).

Prayer: Father, send me the Holy Spirit to teach me the radical newness of my baptized life in Jesus (see Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10).

Promise: "The invited are many, the elect are few." -Mt 22:14

Praise: St. Rose took a vow of virginity and practiced forms of penance in an attempt to make reparation for widespread sin and corruption.

LOVING GOD FOR HIMSELF - One Bread, One Body, 8/22/2018

Wednesday, August 22, 2018, Queenship of Mary

Ezekiel 34:1-11, Psalm 23:1-6, Matthew 20:1-16
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082218.cfm

LOVING GOD FOR HIMSELF

"The reign of God is like the case of the owner of an estate who went out at dawn to hire workmen." -Matthew 20:1

"There is, of course, great gain in religion" (1 Tm 6:6). "While physical training is to some extent valuable, the discipline of religion is incalculably more so, with its promise of life here and hereafter" (1 Tm 4:8). There are such awesome benefits to Christianity that Christians are tempted to think that these benefits are the reason for Christianity. However, the essence of the Christian life is love - unconditional love - for God is this kind of love (1 Jn 4:16). For example, we should want to go to heaven not primarily because heaven is so good but because God lives there. Christianity should not be focused on the blessings of God but on the God Who blesses.

Because we are naturally selfish, it is difficult for God to get us to love Him for Himself. He nonetheless does this by making the cross the essence of Christianity. When we take up our crosses and suffer, we see that Christianity is not only about blessings. Through the cross, we enter into the love of the Crucified One.

Moreover, the Lord sometimes gives everlasting happiness to those who do very little to merit it (see Mt 20:9; Lk 23:43). If we've been carrying the crosses of Christianity to get something out of it, we may observe this and complain: "This last group did only an hour's work, but you have put them on the same basis as us" (Mt 20:12). The Christian life doesn't compute if we look primarily at the benefits. Thus, Christianity must be essentially about something else.

Be Christian. Live in unconditional love (Jn 15:9). Love God for Himself.

Prayer: Father, may I love You even if I feel as Job felt.

Promise: "I Myself will look after and tend My sheep." -Ez 34:11

Praise: Mary conformed her will to God's and received joy. Though a small-town girl, she said 'Yes' to the Lord and was lifted up to be the Queen of heaven and earth.

PROUD OF BEING HUMBLE? - One Bread, One Body, 8/21/2018

Tuesday, August 21, 2018, Pope St. Pius X

Ezekiel 28:1-10, Deuteronomy 32:26-28, 30, 35-36, Matthew 19:23-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082118.cfm

PROUD OF BEING HUMBLE?

"You are haughty of heart, you say, 'A god am I! I occupy a godly throne in the heart of the sea!' - And yet you are a man, and not a god, however you may think yourself like a god." -Ezekiel 28:2

The prince of Tyre had no qualms about displaying His arrogance. He had the gall to proclaim: "A god am I!" The prince of Tyre thought he was wiser than Daniel (Ez 28:4) and personally responsible for the amassing of his riches (Ez 28:5).

Although in recent times a number of people follow the example of the prince of Tyre and flaunt their arrogance, most Christians know that we are to give God all the glory (Ps 115:1) and publicly acknowledge that without Jesus we can do absolutely nothing (Jn 15:5). Our lives are utterly dependent on God's grace and mercy in every second forever. Although we Christians are joining the heavenly voices and giving the Lord all "power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and praise" (Rv 5:12), we may be like Peter saying: "Here we have put everything aside to follow You. What can we expect from it?" (Mt 19:27) Peter's words betray a pride and certainly less than a total surrender to the Lord.

How can we die to ourselves (see Jn 12:24: Lk 9:24), live our Baptisms, and be truly humble and not subtly proud? We are helpless. Let us cry out for God's grace and mercy.

Prayer: Father, You are my only Hope and the only Hope I need.

Promise: "Everyone who has given up home, brothers or sisters, father or mother, wife or children or property for My sake will receive many times as much and inherit everlasting life." -Mt 19:29

Praise: Pope St. Pius X was the servant of the people of God. If you received your First Communion as a child, give praise to God today for the decision of Pope St. Pius X over a century ago to include you. "Jesus said, 'Let the children come to Me' " (Mt 19:14).

ABNORMALITIES? - One Bread, One Body, 8/20/2018

ABNORMALITIES?

"That evening my wife died, and the next morning I did as I had been commanded." -Ezekiel 24:18

The Jewish people mourned the death of those they loved by crying and groaning, by taking off their turbans and sandals, by covering their beards, and by eating a special kind of bread (Ez 24:16-17). The Lord told Ezekiel not to do these customary things when his wife died. God told Ezekiel not to react normally for the purpose of showing His people that they did not react normally to the desecration of their sanctuary and the destruction of their children (Ez 24:21).

Are you reacting normally to the massacre of more than nine million infants annually in the USA through surgical and chemical abortions? Are you reacting normally to a large number of Catholics being unfaithful in their commitments to the Lord and His Church? What's your reaction to massive marital breakdown, the decimation of religious communities, and a spiritually anorexic Church? Do you have a reaction? Are you normal enough to cry, groan, repent, pray, act, evangelize, and do penance?

Prayer: Father, restore me to normality.

Promise: "Go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor. You will then have treasure in heaven. Afterward, come back and follow Me." -Mt 19:21

Praise: St. Bernard was a greatly anointed Bible teacher. He wrote over eighty sermons on the first several chapters of The Song of Songs.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE WORD OF LIFE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/19/2018

"Do not continue in ignorance, but try to discern the will of the Lord." -Ephesians 5:17

St. Jerome asserted: "Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" (Catechism, 133). If we
are ignorant of Christ, we will not discern the will of the Lord (Eph 5:17). This means we will
not make "the most of the present opportunity" (Eph 5:16). But through knowledge of the Scriptures
and through good discernment of God's will, we are saved from a futile (see 1 Pt 1:18), vain
(see Eccl 1:2) existence.

Therefore:

* "Keep this book of the law on your lips. Recite it by day and by night, that you may observe
carefully all that is written in it; then you will successfully attain your goal" (Jos 1:8).
* Let the law of the Lord be your joy, and study God's law day and night (see Ps 1:2).
* Devour God's words and make them the joy and happiness of your heart (Jer 15:16).
* Abide in God's Word (Jn 8:31).
* Devote yourself to the apostles' teaching (Acts 2:42).
* Each day study the Scriptures (Acts 17:11).
* Preach God's Word and "stay with this task whether convenient or inconvenient - correcting,
reproving, appealing - constantly teaching and never losing patience" (2 Tm 4:2).
* How precious is God's Word! Love, live, and proclaim His Word.

Prayer: Father, may I daily read and joyfully obey Your Word.

Promise: "I Myself am the Living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall
live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world." -Jn 6:51

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! You are the Living Word, the Word of Life. All glory be to You
forever!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

CHRISTIANS AND MISSION

PROCLAIM JESUS

The Church, by proclaiming what she has freely received ... can share with you ... the way and truth
which gives meaning to our life on this earth. Jesus Christ, who died and rose for us, appeals to our
freedom and challenges us to seek, discover and proclaim this message of truth and fulfillment.

DON'T BE AFRAID

... Do not be afraid of Christ and His Church! For there we will find the treasure that fills life
with joy. I can tell you this from my own experience: thanks to faith, I found the sure foundation of
my dreams and the strength to realize them. .. From the cross of Jesus we learn the divine logic of
self-sacrifice ... as a proclamation of the Gospel for the life of the world...

WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?

To be set afire by the love of Christ is to be consumed by that fire, to grow in understanding by its
light and to be warmed by its love ... At the school of the saints who open us to the vast horizons
of God, I invite you to never stop wondering: " What would Christ do if he were in my place?"

THE WORD OF LIFE - One Bread, One Body, 8/19/2018

Sunday, August 19, 2018, 20th Sunday Ordinary Time

Proverbs 9:1-6, Ephesians 5:15-20, Psalm 34:2-3, 10-15, John 6:51-58
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/081918.cfm

THE WORD OF LIFE

"Do not continue in ignorance, but try to discern the will of the Lord." -Ephesians 5:17

St. Jerome asserted: "Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" (Catechism, 133). If we are ignorant of Christ, we will not discern the will of the Lord (Eph 5:17). This means we will not make "the most of the present opportunity" (Eph 5:16). But through knowledge of the Scriptures and through good discernment of God's will, we are saved from a futile (see 1 Pt 1:18), vain (see Eccl 1:2) existence.

Therefore:

* "Keep this book of the law on your lips. Recite it by day and by night, that you may observe carefully all that is written in it; then you will successfully attain your goal" (Jos 1:8).
* Let the law of the Lord be your joy, and study God's law day and night (see Ps 1:2).
* Devour God's words and make them the joy and happiness of your heart (Jer 15:16).
* Abide in God's Word (Jn 8:31).
* Devote yourself to the apostles' teaching (Acts 2:42).
* Each day study the Scriptures (Acts 17:11).
* Preach God's Word and "stay with this task whether convenient or inconvenient - correcting, reproving, appealing - constantly teaching and never losing patience" (2 Tm 4:2).
* How precious is God's Word! Love, live, and proclaim His Word.
Prayer: Father, may I daily read and joyfully obey Your Word.

Promise: "I Myself am the Living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world." -Jn 6:51

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! You are the Living Word, the Word of Life. All glory be to You forever!

LOVE CHILDREN, DON'T HINDER THEM - One Bread, One Body, 8/18/2018

LOVE CHILDREN, DON'T HINDER THEM

"Jesus said: 'Let the children come to Me. Do not hinder them.' " -Matthew 19:14

Jesus loves children. This means not only that He gives them special graces but also that He expects us to provide the best circumstances for children to grow. This means Jesus expects us to:

* try hard to stop abortion and contraception,
* change our lifestyle and make any other decisions necessary to do something about the millions of starving children in the world,
* promote the covenant of marriage, in which children should be conceived and raised,
* not condone promiscuity, which often deprives children of two parents,
* pray and be compassionate with those hurting from divorce,
* if married, pray daily with your spouse for your children,
* pray daily with your family,
* fight hard against all pornography, in particular child pornography,
* promote parents as the primary educators of their children,
* promote daily family catechesis, especially family Bible reading, and
* censor TV and other media so that nothing enters our homes and consciousness which Jesus has not approved.

To love children entails many things. We must sacrifice to love children, for Jesus has clearly shown this to be His will. Love children as Jesus loves children.

Prayer: Father, I will take up the cross of loving children.

Promise: "I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies, says the Lord God. Return and live!" -Ez 18:32

Praise: The desire to attend Mass is so strong in Thomas that he rises an hour early to attend morning Mass before high-school.

RADICALLY NEW - One Bread, One Body, 8/17/2018

Friday, August 17, 2018

Ezekiel 16:1-15, 60, 63, Isaiah 12:2-6, Matthew 19:3-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/081718.cfm

RADICALLY NEW

"Let him accept this teaching who can." -Matthew 19:12

God's thoughts and ways are not our thoughts and ways (Is 55:8). "As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are" His ways and thoughts above ours (Is 55:9).

For example, man's ways are divorce and re-marriage. All human societies have had divorce and re-marriage, because lifelong monogamy is very difficult for us with our fallen human nature. However, God's ways are: No divorce and no re-marriage (without an annulment). He can have such extreme ways because He is God, Who has given us a new nature in the crucified and risen Christ.

Also, man's way is that we humans have sexual relations. Sexual relations are obviously natural. Nevertheless, God's way for some is that they have no sexual relations. Some disciples of Jesus are called to renounce "sex for the sake of God's reign" (Mt 19:12) and in imitation of Jesus.

These are only two of thousands of examples of God's ways being different and higher than ours. "This means that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old order has passed away; now all is new!" (2 Cor 5:17) Renew your Baptism. Be radically new (see Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10).

Prayer: Father, may my life be such that those who don't understand You will not naturally be able to understand my way of life.

Promise: "God indeed is my Savior; I am confident and unafraid." -Is 12:2

Praise: Helen has become a "dedicated virgin" to better imitate Christ. Her smile lights up any room she enters.

FORGIVING FROM THE HEART

" 'Pay back what you owe,' he demanded." -Matthew 18:28

Jesus commands us to forgive people from our hearts (Mt 18:35). In the context of today's parable, that means we must, in our hearts, consider the account paid off. The books have been balanced and the slate wiped clean.

How can we determine if we've forgiven others from our hearts? If we continue to look for some kind of reward or return from those who hurt us, we have not truly forgiven from our hearts. If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you have not closed the books yet on the account:

* If the spouse who has hurt you so much is praised in public, are you inwardly angry and looking for justice?
* Are you disturbed if those who damaged your reputation are honored by your co-workers, respected by your fellow parishioners, or successful in their projects?
* Do you find yourself dreaming about the other person being shamefully exposed and yourself fully vindicated?
* Do you "keep score" of old wounds? (see 1 Cor 13:5)

Jesus forgave from His heart. His immediate reward for this was to be publicly mocked, humiliated, and brutalized. He had so much love and forgiveness for us that He refused to count the cost of forgiving us from the heart. He silently bore our punishment, and we got off free. Imitate Jesus. Forgive first. Forgive to the point of looking bad yourself. Forgive completely. Forgive regardless of the cost. Forgive from your heart.

Prayer: Father, may I be so secure in Your love that I won't look for satisfaction anywhere else. I forgive all who have hurt me.

Promise: "I canceled your entire debt when you pleaded with me." -Mt 18:32

Praise: Though king, St. Stephen made certain he was accessible to the poor and oppressed, and strove to provide justice for them.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

MARY, "SIGN OF SURE HOPE" (LUMEN GENTIUM, 68)

"He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places." -Luke 1:52

August 6 and 9 are the anniversaries of the atomic bombings of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. August 9 is the feast of St. Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), who was martyred in a concentration camp. Yesterday we celebrated the feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe, who was starved almost to death in a concentration camp and eventually martyred by lethal injection. Our recollections during the last few days have been sobering. They could even be depressing when we admit that the spirit of violence, injustice, and human degradation continues to be present in the world today.

When Pope Pius XII considered the atrocities of the first half of the twentieth century, he knew that "despite the increase of sin, grace has far surpassed it" (Rm 5:20). He knew that there was hope because Jesus is Lord and has saved us from our sins and conquered death. Pope Pius XII knew that death had been swallowed up in the victory of Christ (1 Cor 15:54).

The Pope, in consultation with the bishops of the world, decided to express the hope we have in the risen Christ by officially proclaiming that Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. On Nov. 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII authoritatively recognized Mary's Assumption, which had been preached and taught for many centuries. Because Mary already shares in Christ's victory over death, she is a sign of hope for us who struggle to have hope in this culture of death. Today is a special day of hope. Let us "wait in joyful hope."

Prayer: Father, make me ready to give the reason for my hope (1 Pt 3:15).

Promise: "Death came through a man; hence the resurrection of the dead comes through a man also. Just as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will come to life again." -1 Cor 15:21-22

Praise: Praise Jesus, risen Son of God and Son of Mary.
