INTENT ON LIVING WITH GOD
"Anyone who wished to consult the Lord would go to this meeting tent." —Exodus 33:7

When the Israelites fled from Egypt, God remained with Israel in the desert, dwelling in the ark of the covenant under the cover of a large “meeting tent” (see Ex 33:7). In the meeting tent, “the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one man speaks to another” (Ex 33:11). Eventually, King Solomon built a temple as the dwelling place of God to replace the meeting tent (see 2 Chr 3:1ff), but for many years the Lord dwelt in the presence of Israel inside a tent (see 2 Sm 7:2-7).

Then the Father sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, and He made His dwelling among us (Jn 1:14). This text can be translated as “Jesus pitched His tent among us.” St. Paul refers to our human body as an earthly “tent” (see 2 Cor 5:1, 4). Jesus comes to dwell in our tent, within our own hearts. Now God desires that His “meeting tent” be in our own heart, in our very body. We are to be meeting tents for Jesus, walking “dwelling places” who have Jesus living within us (see Jn 6:56; 17:23). Jesus dwells in our tent, and God’s Word declares: “No evil shall befall you, nor shall affliction come near your tent” (Ps 91:10).

In the Holy Eucharist, we literally receive Jesus into our body, our earthly tent. The Lord wants to abide with us even more than we want to be with Him. Jesus stands at the door of our “dwelling place” and knocks (see Rv 3:20), asking to be received. Will you let Him enter and make His dwelling in your life?

Prayer: Lord, may I be a dwelling place where You reign.

Promise: "Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger and abounding in kindness." —Ps 103:8

Praise: St. Alphonsus was a highly educated theologian who was also a prolific writer. Yet he insisted on clear, simple preaching. He once said: "I have never preached a sermon which the poorest old woman in the congregation could not understand."

TWICE AS FAST
"Moses said to the people, 'You have committed a grave sin. I will go up to the Lord.' " —Exodus 32:30

Moses “stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights without eating or drinking, till the Lord gave” him the Ten Commandments (Dt 9:9-10). When Moses came down the mountain, he saw the people adoring the golden calf. “With that, Moses’ wrath flared up, so that he threw the tablets down and broke them on the base of the mountain” (Ex 32:19). Then Moses went up the mountain again with new stone tablets. “So Moses stayed there with the Lord for forty days and forty nights, without eating any food or drinking any water, and he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments” (Ex 34:28).

A forty-day fast with no food and no water is humanly impossible. Back-to-back forty-day fasts are unthinkable. Moses, however, went eighty days without eating or drinking. This shows not only the special graces the Lord gave Moses to fast but also Moses’ love for the Lord and His people. Who loves enough to fast for the salvation of others? Who cares enough to fast for several days? Who loves enough to fast for people who have fallen into idolatry and broken your heart?

Pope St. John Paul II taught: “Jesus Himself has shown us by His own example that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil (cf Mt 4:1-11). As He taught His disciples, some demons cannot be driven out except in this way (cf Mk 9:29). Let us therefore discover anew the humility and courage to pray and fast” (The Gospel of Life, 100).

Prayer: Father, teach me to pray and fast.

Promise: "I will open My mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden since the creation of the world." —Mt 13:35

Praise: St. Ignatius, once a tough soldier trained in physical strength and warfare, had a deep conversion and became a priest.

GOD'S VOMITING
"When he found one really valuable pearl, he went back and put up for sale all that he had and bought it." —Matthew 13:46

Many people don’t want to put all their eggs into one basket. So they become “Christians” but still keep one foot in the world. This way, if Jesus isn’t real, at least they haven’t wasted their whole lives for Him. They rationalize that if Jesus is the meaning of life, they’re at least church members, without losing the “fun” of the world.

This is the most common approach to Christianity in America. It makes Jesus feel like throwing up (Rv 3:15-16). Jesus died on the cross for us. He poured out every drop of blood and breathed His last breath for us. As we kneel before the crucified Jesus, we realize that it is sacrilegious to give Him anything less than everything.

The kingdom of God is like a buried treasure or a precious pearl (Mt 13:44-46). The cost of discipleship is everything. We may not have much, but we each have an “all” — and that all is what we must give. The first commandment is: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind” (Lk 10:27).

Prayer: Father, "give Your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge Your people and to distinguish right from wrong" (1 Kgs 3:9).

Promise: "We know that God makes all things work together for the good of those who love" Him. —Rm 8:28

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, "The Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (Jn 14:6). Alleluia!

BLOOD REPLACEMENT
"This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words of His." —Exodus 24:8

We have made a covenant of blood with God. Because life is in the blood (Lv 17:11), we have made a covenant of life with God. Our covenant with God is literally a matter of life and death. Because we have broken the covenant by our sins, we forfeit our lives and are doomed to destruction.

Almost two thousand years ago, shortly before His death on the cross, Jesus celebrated the Passover and the first Mass, at which He said: “This is My blood, the blood of the covenant, to be poured out in behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins” (Mt 26:28). Then Jesus shed His blood by dying on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus substituted His blood and His life for ours. He took on the consequences of our breaking of the covenant and freed us from destruction.

Traditionally, the month of July has been marked as a special time for praising the blood of Jesus, although it’s fitting to praise His blood every day. So let us joyfully praise the blood of Jesus by receiving His Body and Blood in Holy Communion, by applying His blood through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, by reading about His blood in the Scriptures, and by mentioning His blood in our prayer and other conversations. Praise the blood of Jesus!

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me the wonder-working power of the blood of the Lamb (see Rv 7:14).

Promise: "Offer to God praise as your sacrifice and fulfill your vows to the Most High." —Ps 50:14

Praise: "Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus very much" (Jn 11:5).

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?
"Mark well, then, the parable of the sower. The seed along the path is the man who hears the message about God's reign without understanding it. The evil one approaches him to steal away what was sown in his mind." —Matthew 13:18-19

The fact that you’re reading this book means you are probably not the footpath. You have received the seed of God’s Word. If you have read this book and especially the daily Scripture readings regularly for an extended time, you are probably not the rocky ground (see Mt 13:20). You are in the minority of people in our society who have the potential to bear fruit.

Therefore, if you bear thorns rather than fruit (see Mt 13:22), it will be a great loss to the world. If you don’t bear fruit, who will? “When much has been given a man, much will be required of him” (Lk 12:48). In a world of footpaths and rocky ground, the Church desperately needs you to bear maximum fruit.

Therefore, you must be very careful to watch and pray so that “worldly anxiety and the lure of money” do not choke off your rare, precious, and greatly needed fruit (Mt 13:22). If you are not rich, be careful not to desire to be rich, for “those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and a trap. They are letting themselves be captured by foolish and harmful desires which drag men down to ruin and destruction. The love of money is the root of all evil. Some men in their passion for it have strayed from the faith, and have come to grief amid great pain” (1 Tm 6:9-10). Don’t exchange your lifesaving potential to bear fruit for a comfortable, pleasurable, barren lifestyle; for Jesus commands us to live in Him and to bear fruit abundantly (Jn 15:5).

Prayer: Father, make me fruitful even in the midst of a barren desert.

Promise: "Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you." —Ex 20:12

Praise: When Gloria received the Holy Spirit she was inspired to give a large donation to establish a Catholic retreat center.

GOD'S BACKING YOU UP
"I am coming to you in a dense cloud, so that when the people hear Me speaking with you, they may always have faith in you also." —Exodus 19:9

God manifested Himself in a mighty way to the Israelites at Mount Sinai (Ex 19:16ff), speaking to them both directly and through Moses, and giving them the Ten Commandments. Yet within a short time, they abandoned Him to worship a golden calf (Ex 32:1ff).

Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God in parables (Mt 13:10), discourses (Mt 5:1ff), and in signs and wonders. Though Jesus gave the Israelite people God’s Word, they soon abandoned and crucified Him.

Jesus has sent us out to spread the message of His kingdom. The bad news is: If people won’t listen to the Father, the Son, and Moses, why will they listen to us? The good news is that God wants them to listen to us, and He backs us up. God backed up Moses by appearing publicly in power in the dense cloud so the people might “have faith in” Moses (Ex 19:9). He continues to back up with power all who proclaim His Word (Mk 16:15, 17).

Therefore, don’t focus on the reception you get when you spread God’s Word. Focus instead on the certain knowledge that God is with you, backing you up. “Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not be silenced, for [God is] with you” (Acts 18:9-10).

Prayer: "The Lord is my Helper, I will not be afraid; what can man do to me?" (Heb 13:6) Lord, I will spread Your Word in faith.

Promise: "Blest are your eyes because they see and blest are your ears because they hear." —Mt 13:16

Praise: Reading the papal encyclicals helps build Martin's faith as he sees how the gospel is applied to the modern world.

FARM WORK
"One day a farmer went out..." —Matthew 13:4

The kingdom of God is like breaking ground. The ground may be rock, a footpath (Mt 13:4), or just rocky (Mt 13:5). In our post-Christian, anti-Christian culture of death, groundbreaking is a major task. We can break open the hardest ground and hardest hearts by obeying the Lord. Often He calls us to pray and fast, prophesy, and suffer redemptively. These are principal ways in which the Lord lets us join in groundbreaking.

The kingdom of God involves not only breaking ground but also clearing ground of the thorns, which are worldly desires hindering our growth in the Lord (see Mt 13:7). We can help clear ground by repenting of compromising with the ways of the world (see Mt 13:22). In this way, we crucify our “flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal 5:24) and help others do the same.

In God’s kingdom, we work not only with types and conditions of ground; we also work with fruit. We can increase our fruitfulness from thirtyfold or sixtyfold to a hundredfold (Mt 13:8), and help others do the same by yielding completely to the Holy Spirit (see Gal 5:22-23, 25).

Farmers for Jesus, break ground, clear ground, and increase the yield of fruit. Farm for Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I put in a good day's work each day on Your farm (see 1 Cor 3:8-9).

Promise: "I will now rain down bread from heaven for you." —Ex 16:4

Praise: Sts. Joachim and Anne gave their daughter Mary to God, and she gave God to all mankind.

"GREATING" ON YOUR NERVES
"Such is the case with the Son of Man Who has come, not to be served by others, but to serve, to give His own life as a ransom for the many." —Matthew 20:28

St. James has been traditionally called James “the greater” to distinguish him from the other apostle named James. James was the second apostle appointed by Jesus (Mk 3:17) and one of the first apostles called by Jesus (Mt 4:21). James was privileged to be one of the three apostles present for the raising from the dead of Jairus’ daughter (Mk 5:37), the Transfiguration (Mt 17:1), and Jesus’ agony in the garden (Mt 26:37). James was “greater” in more ways than one.

When James’ mother asked Jesus to put her sons at His right and left hands (see Mt 20:21), there was no doubt that James already had one of the top places in Jesus’ kingdom. The only question was: “Would John also be promoted?” In the Gospels, John is usually referred to as “James’ brother” (see Mt 4:21; Mk 3:17). It may seem that James was the more prominent brother.

However, Jesus did not make James’ eminent position official. Instead, He challenged James to drink the cup of suffering, to take up the cross (Mt 20:22). This was the pattern of Jesus’ relationship with James. Before Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter, He displayed to James the cross of being ridiculed (Mk 5:40). Before and after the Transfiguration, Jesus spoke of the cross (Mt 16:21; 17:22-23). At the agony in the garden, Jesus again showed James “the way of the cross.” Finally, after Pentecost, James, now called “the brother of John,” got the message and became the first apostle to be martyred (Acts 12:2).

Prayer: Father, may "the greaters" get the message and take up the cross.

Promise: "Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed." —2 Cor 4:10

Praise: Holy Spirit, we praise You for creating St. James to be battle-ready. Inspire us to imitate his courageous example.

Just as Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man spend three days and three nights in the bowels of the earth” (Mt 12:39-40). In other words, in answer to their request for a sign, Jesus gave them the sign of the cross.

The sign of the cross is like a stop sign. When we are driving and we see a stop sign, we automatically come to a stop and look to see what is happening. When we see a crucifix, we must react the same way. We should immediately stop and look at the crucified Christ, keeping “our eyes fixed on Jesus” (Heb 12:2). Indeed, this should stop us in our tracks. As mighty men and women of old have reacted (Is 52:14-15), we stand speechless before the sight of the Son of God hanging in agony. We listen to Jesus as He tells us to stop and know that He is God (see Ps 46:11).

Stop! “Stop sinning” (1 Cor 15:33). “You have only to keep still” (Ex 14:14). Stop, in the name of Love!

Prayer: "I will sing to the Lord, for He is gloriously triumphant...He is my God, I praise Him" (Ex 15:1, 2).

Promise: "Fear not! Stand your ground, and you will see the victory the Lord will win for you today." —Ex 14:13

Praise: St. Sharbel Makhluf was a Lebanese monk who lived as a hermit in poverty, self-sacrifice, and prayer. He traded his previous life for a lifetime of serving Jesus, and thereby discovered who he was (Mt 10:39).

"PRAYING WRONG"
"We do not know how to pray as we ought." —Romans 8:26

Many Christians have the feeling that they’re praying wrong (Jas 4:3), that they’re not praying as they ought. They think they’re saying the wrong words or that they need to pray more or say a certain series of prayers, but they are wrong about praying wrong. They may be praying wrong, but it’s not because of their words, methods, or even time commitment. When we pray “with a view to squandering what” we receive on our pleasures (Jas 4:3), we “ask wrongly.” We pray wrong not because of a faulty memory, halting speech, or confused mind, but because of a selfish heart.

Prayer is not getting God to give us what we want. It is God getting us to give Him what He wants. The essence of the Christian life and of prayer is denying ourselves (Lk 9:23). So we can definitely pray wrong, and it may be that most Christians often pray wrongly.

The solution to this problem is not learning techniques of prayer, praying prayers out of a book, or praying spontaneously. The way to stop praying wrong is to repent of selfishness, disobedience, and doing our own thing. Then even our groans will be powerful prayers pleasing to the Lord (see Rm 8:26).

Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like Yours so I will "pray right."

Promise: "The saints will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. Let everyone heed what he hears!" —Mt 13:43

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, only Hope for the world!

LOVE ALWAYS FINDS A WAY
"I will seek Him Whom my heart loves." —Song of Songs 3:2

Love can never be completely satisfied or complacent. Love by its very nature must be expressed, grow, and always find greater ways to bless the beloved. “Love following upon love” (Jn 1:16) always seeks the good of the other. Love, in a sense, is restless because love cannot rest until all is well with the beloved.

Love ignores personal safety and comfort. Love seeks the beloved day and night (Sg 3:1-2). Love always seeks a way to reach the beloved, and if we seek to love, we will find a way (Mt 7:8).

This is the way Mary Magdalene loved Jesus. “The love of Christ” impelled her (2 Cor 5:14) to seek out Jesus. She had to be with Him, whether He was dying the gruesome death of an accused criminal (Jn 19:25) or risen in glorious splendor (Jn 20:16-17). This is the way Jesus loves us: we may be spiritually dead (Rv 3:1; 1 Jn 3:14), but Jesus loves us so much that He never stops seeking us.

“Love never fails” (1 Cor 13:8). If we love Jesus as much as Mary Magdalene did, we will find Him (Jer 29:13; Mt 7:8), and He will dwell in us and we in Him (1 Jn 4:16). Find the “Way” (Jn 14:6). Seek to love Jesus as did Mary Magdalene.

Prayer: Jesus, You are Love (1 Jn 4:8). I love You so much. May our mutual love start a new fire of faith and love burning on the earth (Lk 12:49).

Promise: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old order has passed away; now all is new!" —2 Cor 5:17

Praise: St. Mary Magdalene so loved Jesus that she remained with Him at Calvary when almost everyone else abandoned Him.

NOTHING LESS THAN 100%
"The Son of Man is indeed Lord of the sabbath."—Matthew 12:8

Jesus responded to the Pharisees’ criticism of Him and His disciples by comparing Himself to King David and the priests of the Temple (Mt 12:3, 5). Jesus also took the liberty of giving these religious leaders a lesson in interpreting the Bible (see Mt 12:7). Next, Jesus called Himself the Lord of the sabbath (Mt 12:8). In effect, He called Himself God.

The Pharisees probably thought: “Who does this Galilean Carpenter think He is?” Jesus acted as if He was King of kings, Priest of priests, Rabbi (Teacher) of rabbis, and God Himself. The Pharisees had no choice but to worship Jesus or stone Him as a blasphemer.

Jesus is also challenging you to believe in Him as your Lord, God, and All (see Jn 20:28). He wants to take over your whole life and make you realize your total dependence on Him (see Jn 15:5). He wants to be not part of your life, but all of your Life (see Phil 1:21). After all, He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Jn 14:6). Jesus doesn’t want more of you or 99% of you. He wants all of you —100%.

Will you pray: “I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me”? (Gal 2:19-20)

Prayer: Father, as soon as possible may every knee bend and every tongue proclaim: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD! (Phil 2:10-11)

Promise: "This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the Lord, as a perpetual institution." —Ex 12:14

Praise: St. Lawrence of Brindisi preached throughout Europe, and like Jesus fortified himself with much prayer.

THE "REST" OF THE STORY
"Your souls will find rest." —Matthew 11:29

We disciples labor under the yoke of Jesus (Mt 11:30; Lk 9:23). Jesus therefore calls us to rest in Him (Mt 11:29). Even resting in Jesus demands effort on our part. Each day we have to “strive to enter into that rest” (Heb 4:11). Mysteriously, disciples often rest better when they are most diligent.

There’s a balance to entering Jesus’ rest. We can’t strive too hard, for our efforts alone are futile (Is 26:17-18). We must let God’s rest be done unto us (Lk 1:38). We yield to His grace, but avoid laziness, since we must cooperate with God’s grace by accepting Jesus’ yoke and bearing His burden (Mt 11:30).

Jesus Himself had no place to rest His head (Lk 9:58). This probably refers to more than a bed. Jesus also had no place to Himself. His “place” was constant interruptions, a lack of privacy, a life on the move, etc. Like Jesus, we embrace our cross of fatigue and weariness. Amidst our fatigue, we have a fountain of life and rest which never runs dry. That “rest” is not found by those who take shortcuts or evade the cross. It’s found by those who keep walking the path of Calvary, push through the cross, and discover that, in the place where He was crucified, is a garden (Jn 19:41). In that garden, found only at the foot of the cross, is the “rest” and the strength to endure.

St. Augustine said: “Our heart is restless until it rests in You” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 30). “Come to” Jesus (Mt 11:28). Enter into His rest.

Prayer: Jesus, help me not to rest when I should be serving You (Mt 26:43-45) or to work when I should be resting in You (Ps 127:2; Ex 31:15). Only in You "is my soul at rest" (Ps 62:1).

Promise: "My yoke is easy and My burden light." —Mt 11:30

Praise: St. Apollinaris, tradition says, was ordained by St. Peter and noted for his gift of healing.

DEPENDING ON REVELATION
"Father, Lord of heaven and earth, to You I offer praise; for what You have hidden from the learned and the clever You have revealed to the merest children." —Matthew 11:25

The Father reveals what has been hidden. The Son reveals the Father (Mt 11:27). God’s revelation is so precious. Contrary to the old saying, what we don’t know does hurt us. However, what we do know can do more than help us; it can transform us.

For example, Moses was a victim of Egyptian oppression. He was deprived of growing up in the home of his parents. He had a speech defect. He was a murderer and a refugee (see Ex 2:11ff). However, when he received God’s revelation at the burning bush, he became a new man. His job, residence, and even his face (Ex 34:29) changed. He changed from a refugee into a mighty liberator. God’s revelation to Moses resulted in the liberation of the whole Israelite nation. Revelation leads to transformation and liberation.

We receive divine revelation not by being learned and clever, but by being more dependent on the Lord than babies are on their parents (Mt 11:25). For instance, we can receive God’s revelation by going to Mass and receiving Holy Communion in an attitude of adoration and submission. We can receive revelation by praying, fasting, and knowing that without Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). We can also receive revelation by reading and living the Church’s teachings and the Bible without leaning on our own understanding (see Prv 3:5). We receive God’s revelation when we depend on Him. New life is in revelation.

Prayer: Father, tell me "things great beyond reach of [my] knowledge" (Jer 33:3).

Promise: "Father, it is true. You have graciously willed it so. Everything has been given over to Me by My Father." —Mt 11:26-27

Praise: Fr. Robert knew his vocation to the priesthood at age seven and received the Eucharist every day for fifty years.

GOD TURNS THE TABLES
"Pharaoh's daughter…adopted him as her son and called him Moses." —Exodus 2:10

Pharaoh issued the command to kill every baby boy born to the Hebrew people (Ex 1:22). What a wondrous reversal of this unjust law that God, in His mercy and justice, would lead Pharaoh’s very own daughter to break her father’s law and begin the deliverance of the Hebrews (Ex 2:5-10).

The Lord worked a similar reversal in the case of Joseph, as we read last week in Genesis. Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery (Gn 37:28), meaning it for evil, but God used the evil action for good, to rescue his entire family (Gn 45:5).

The Lord always has the upper hand. In any situation of injustice and depravity, God undermines the evil regime in the most wonderfully creative ways. In addition, evil undermines itself, and begets its very own downfall (see e.g. Jgs 7:21-22). God can work all things, including the forces of evil, to bring about good (see Rm 8:28; Gn 50:20). Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more (Rm 5:20).

We Catholics live in the midst of a faithless, perverse, and corrupt generation (Phil 2:15). We are bombarded by the triumphs of injustice and unholiness. So it is possible to lose hope in the coming of the kingdom of God. “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1). Jesus has conquered sin, evil, unholiness, and death. Difficult times require great faith. The deliverance of Moses by Pharaoh’s very own daughter shows that “for God all things are possible” (Mt 19:25). Believe that God knows what He is doing.

Prayer: Father, day by day, help me to "walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7).

Promise: "The Lord hears the poor, and His own who are in bonds He spurns not." —Ps 69:34

Praise: St. Camillus gambled away all his possessions. After hearing a sermon, he repented and gave his life to the Lord's service.

TAMING OF THE SHREWD
"Come, let us deal shrewdly with them to stop their increase." —Exodus 1:10

We live in a modern-day Egypt. Many groups conspire to stop our increase. At the head of this conspiracy is Satan, who is still dealing shrewdly with God’s people to keep children from being conceived, birthed, and raised to healthy Christian maturity. Shrewd remarks and putdowns may stop increases as effectively as artificial contraception, abortion, and sterilization.

Satan has used his pawns to shrewdly attempt to take control of human sexuality and reproduction and to expel Jesus from this crucial arena. Once again, Satan, “the prince of death” (Heb 2:14), is trying to get people to crucify Jesus, “the Author of Life” (Acts 3:15), and keep Life out of the bedroom.

We need new Daniels to speak out against this corruption (Dn 13:45ff), new Johns to boldly confront sexual immorality (Mk 6:18), and new Pauls to call society to purity and holiness (1 Tm 4:12). We need people to love Jesus more than anyone or anything (Mt 10:37). We need to use the weapons of prayer and fasting to destroy Satan’s strongholds (2 Cor 10:4-5). Rescue those held in Satan’s snare (see Ps 124:7). Offer your body to Jesus as a weapon for righteousness (Rm 6:13; cf Rm 12:1).

Prayer: Jesus, I will spend my life proclaiming You as Lord with my words and my lifestyle.

Promise: "He who brings himself to nought for Me discovers who he is." —Mt 10:39

  • an infertile footpath? (Mt 13:4)
  • infertile rocky ground? (Mt 13:5)
  • fertile but unfruitful ground overgrown with thorns? (Mt 13:7)
  • fertile, fruitful ground bearing a 30-fold harvest? (Mt 13:8)
  • fertile, fruitful ground bearing a 60-fold harvest? (Mt 13:8)
  • fertile, fruitful ground bearing a 100-fold harvest? (Mt 13:8)

When a farmer finds from testing that his soil is deficient, he does not ignore this information but takes measures to improve the condition of his ground. This should also be true spiritually. If you are an infertile footpath or rocky ground, repent and go to Confession as soon as possible. If you are fertile but unfruitful, ask the Holy Spirit to convict you of your thorny compromise with the ways of the world (Jn 16:8). If you want to increase from a 30-fold harvest to 60-fold or 100-fold, you need community life and daily Bible study.

In good ground, you can grow almost anything worth growing. In bad ground, you can hardly grow anything. The condition of the ground is critical. Recognize the condition of your ground and improve it.

Prayer: Father, may every seed You plant in me grow fully.

Promise: "I consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us." —Rm 8:18

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is risen from the dead! Alleluia forever!

"THERE'S A PLACE FOR US"
"Can I take the place of God?" —Genesis 50:19

Joseph is a “type” of Jesus, that is, he is an Old Testament figure whose life foreshadows the future coming of the Lord. In a sense, Joseph took “the place of God” in showing forgiveness to those who turned their backs on him (see Gn 50:19). Joseph not only forgave those who hurt him, but reassured them repeatedly and even provided for them the rest of their lives (Gn 50:21).

We too, in a sense, can take the place of God. As disciples of Jesus, we imitate the Lord in His character and in His ministry. We are called to show the love, mercy, forgiveness, care, and provision of God to a world that doesn’t know Him. So many have no idea how much God loves them and desires to forgive them. They don’t know how eagerly the Lord Jesus longs to have intimate fellowship with them (see Lk 22:15).

We are “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Cor 5:20) and we take His place on this earth. An ambassador takes the place of the leaders of his or her nation, representing them to a foreign nation. As God’s children and family members, we are representing the Lord to the people of this world. Let the Lord shine through you to convince people of His unfailing love and forgiveness. Jesus has gone before us to prepare a place for us (Jn 14:2); let us go and “take the place of God” (Gn 50:19) in this world, which needs so desperately to know His forgiveness, mercy, and love. “Go out now and take your place” (Acts 5:20).

Prayer: Father, as St. Teresa of Avila taught, You have no hands but ours. I offer you my life, hands, smile, love, and forgiving heart.

Promise: "Do not fear those who deprive the body of life but cannot destroy the soul. Rather, fear Him Who can destroy both body and soul in Gehenna." —Mt 10:28

Praise: St. Bonaventure testified that while he was a child, he was saved from death through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi.

HAPPY ENDINGS
"The Lord watches over the lives of the wholehearted; their inheritance lasts forever." —Psalm 37:18

Israel bitterly mourned for his son, Joseph, whom he assumed to be dead. “Though his sons and daughters tried to console him, he refused all consolation, saying, ‘No, I will go down mourning to my son in the nether world.’ Thus did his father lament him” (Gn 37:35). After fifteen years of intense grief, Israel found out that Joseph was alive. “He was dumbfounded; he could not believe them” (Gn 45:26). Israel set out to see Joseph. When Joseph met his father, “he flung himself on his neck and wept a long time in his arms” (Gn 46:29). A miraculous, happy ending!

If you are a Christian, the Lord warns of the possibility that your enemies will arrest and flog you (Mt 10:17). They will bring you to trial, and you will be betrayed by your parents, children, or family (Mt 10:21). “You will be hated by all” (Mt 10:22). However, in the end, you shall see Jesus face to face and bear His name on your foreheads. The Lord will lead you “to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe every tear from” your eyes (Rv 7:17). Another miraculous ending!

Jesus was tortured, crucified, and murdered. Then on the third day, Jesus rose from the dead. “At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing” (Ps 30:6). The ultimate, happy ending!

The mass apostasy is approaching (2 Thes 2:3). The world may end soon. “The present heavens and earth are reserved by God’s word for fire” (2 Pt 3:7). “The Lord Himself will come down from heaven” (1 Thes 4:16).  Another miraculous ending?

Prayer: Father, give me special graces at the hour of my death or at the end of the world.

Promise: "Whoever holds out till the end will escape death."—Mt 10:22

Praise: St. Kateri was burdened with sickness and persecution from her own people, but endured in her commitment to Christ Jesus.

DUST-COVER
"If anyone does not receive you or listen to what you have to say, leave that house or town, and once outside it shake its dust from your feet." —Matthew 10:14

Remember, man, that we are dust (see Gn 3:19), and we tend to pick up dust as we struggle through life. As we announce the Good News of God’s kingdom, we are often rejected and persecuted. We naturally feel resentment, discouragement, and unforgiveness. However, we must shake off this lethal dust, or we will no longer be able to serve in God’s kingdom.

Through forgiveness and healing, we let the Lord dust us off. For instance, Joseph was almost murdered by his brothers (see Gn 37:20ff). They eventually sold him into slavery. Next, Joseph was falsely accused of rape, for which he was sentenced to years in prison. After thirteen years of slavery and prison, Joseph would naturally be very dusty — even encrusted with dust. Miraculously, however, Joseph forgave his brothers (see Gn 45:5) and many others. He was dusted, cleaned, healed, and victorious.

Jesus hung on the cross covered with dust and grime. Inside, however, He was clean, innocent, and spotless. He even prayed: “Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34).

The Lord wants to dust you off. Go to Confession, forgive, shake the dust off, and be free.

Prayer: Father, remove the dust which is affecting my breathing in the Spirit.

Promise: "As you go, make this announcement: 'The reign of God is at hand!' Cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons." —Mt 10:7-8

Praise: St. Henry was taught by St. Wolfgang and married St. Cunegundes.

HELL ON EARTH
Jesus "summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority to expel unclean spirits and to cure sickness and disease of every kind." —Matthew 10:1

In our secularized times, many Christians are so confused they deny or question the existence or activity of the devil. Their confusion permits the devil to get away with murder, lust, greed, perversion, etc. He has also been able to mass-produce his perversities through mass media, especially TV and online content. The combination of these factors results in a dramatic increase in demonic activity not only in pagan lands but even in Christian areas. We have let the devil become very active in almost every aspect of life. We’ve given him opportunities he may not have had in the past.

Before the devil even further develops his hell on earth, we must reclaim our society for Jesus by attacking the gates of hell (Mt 16:18), commanding Satan to leave (Mk 16:17), disarming and despoiling him (Lk 11:22), and bringing down all his strongholds (2 Cor 10:4). We should make a public spectacle of Satan (Col 2:15) and quickly crush him under our feet (Rm 16:20).

Prayer: Father, in Your name I will work to change the culture of death into a civilization of love.

Promise: "The eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear Him, upon those who hope for His kindness, to deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine." —Ps 33:18-19

Praise: When tempted by his former addiction, Roger has learned to resist the devil through prayer and by praising God.

BIG-TIME WRESTLING
"Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn." —Genesis 32:25

The Lord has wonderful plans for us — “plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope” (Jer 29:11). However, He will not force us to accept His plans. We must say with Mary: “May it be done to me according to Your word” (Lk 1:38, RNAB).

The Lord had a wonderful plan for Jacob. To say “yes” to this plan, Jacob had to:

  • wrestle “with divine and human beings” all night (Gn 32:29),
  • suffer injury (Gn 32:26),
  • receive a blessing (Gn 32:27), and
  • have his name changed (Gn 32:29).

To say “yes” to God often requires ongoing suffering and major changes in our lives. These will result in great blessings. However, we may struggle all night or longer to believe this.

God has great plans (see Heb 11:40). He’s looking for limping, tired, changed, and blessed wrestlers to accept them (see Heb 12:12ff). Will you wrestle?

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to wrestle against and prevail over "the principalities and powers, the rulers of this world of darkness, the evil spirits in regions above" (Eph 6:12).

Promise: "The harvest is good but laborers are scarce. Beg the Harvest Master to send out laborers to gather His harvest." —Mt 9:37-38

Praise: St. Benedict worked miracles, prophesied, and wrote a rule of monastic life which has been used by monks for centuries.

PUTTING OUT
"When the crowd had been put out [Jesus] entered."—Matthew 9:25

Before Jesus worked the miracle of raising a dead girl to life, He ejected a crowd of people ridiculing Him for declaring that the girl was not dead (Mt 9:24). “The crowd [was] making a din” and “began to ridicule him” (Mt 9:23-24).

We too are surrounded by crowds of negativity, skepticism, and unbelief. We are bombarded with the cacophony of the culture of death. We must first do some ejecting to be able to concentrate on the word of faith. Are the TV and handheld electronic devices crowding out the voice of God in your life? Turn them off and put them out when you pray. Are neighbors, co-workers, and family members blocking the Good News from reaching your ears? You may not be able to eject them, but you can give first place to the voice of the Lord.

Jesus rose early in the morning to pray (Mk 1:35). He sought out quiet places to be with God before the demands of the day presented themselves.

The primacy belongs to Jesus in all things (Col 1:28). Give the Lord prime time. Put out whatever crowds out the word of faith from your hearing. “Faith, then, comes through hearing, and what is heard is the word of Christ” (Rm 10:17).

Do you want to get more done? To increase your output, increase your “putting out.” Put out whatever crowds out the voice of God (see Mt 9:25), and let God put more faith into your life.

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to say "No" to myself and "Yes" to You.

Promise: "With His pinions He will cover you, and under His wings you shall take refuge." —Ps 91:4

Praise: For several years, Bonnie used her yearly allotment of vacation time from work to intern for a healing ministry.
