IRRATIONAL
"They were seized with fear." —Mark 5:15

In today’s first reading, Shimei curses, accuses, and continues to pursue King David. This is what the devil does, accusing us constantly (see Rv 12:10). The Gerasenes in today’s Gospel reading also chose the ways of the devil over the ways of the Lord. They preferred a man possessed with a Legion of demons (Mk 5:9) and a road closed to the public (Mt 8:28). In fact, when the Gerasenes saw that this man was “fully clothed and perfectly sane,” they were seized with fear (Mk 5:15) rather than rejoicing at his healing.

Jesus brought the Gospel, freedom, and sanity to a town, and the townspeople begged Him to leave (Mk 5:17). This is not rational behavior. The Gerasenes did recognize Jesus’ power; they just didn’t want any part of it. They preferred fear and dysfunction to liberty and new life.

Are you “seized with fear”? (Mk 5:15) Is there any area of your life in which you prefer the familiarity of dysfunction to the changes required by freedom and life “to the full”? (Jn 10:10) In tomorrow’s Gospel, Jesus will bluntly state: “Fear is useless; what is needed is trust” (Mk 5:36). Present your fears to Jesus. Beg Him to stay and heal.

Prayer: Father, fill me with that perfect love of Yours which casts out all fear (1 Jn 4:18).

Promise: "You, O Lord, are my Shield; my Glory, You lift up my head!" —Ps 3:4

Praise: Inspired by the Lord, St. John Bosco resolved "to rescue young lads from evil ways and to train them in an honest trade."

BLIND, UNREQUITED LOVE
"There is no limit to love's forbearance, to its trust, its hope, its power to endure." —1 Corinthians 13:7

It’s common for Scripture to talk about having faith without seeing. We talk about “blind faith” and the leap of faith. “Faith is confident assurance concerning what we hope for, and conviction about things we do not see” (Heb 11:1). “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7). The centurion had so much faith in Jesus’ word of command that he didn’t need to see Jesus give the order to heal his servant (Lk 7:8, 10).

Scripture also talks about having hope without seeing. “Hope is not hope if its object is seen; how is it possible for one to hope for what he sees? And hoping for what we cannot see means awaiting it with patient endurance” (Rm 8:24-25). Abraham hoped “against hope” (Rm 4:18), though he could not see how God would give him a great inheritance (Heb 11:8ff).

We also have examples in Scripture of love without seeing or “blind love”: the “patient” (1 Cor 13:4) love of a parent for a wayward child (Lk 15:13, 20), the enduring, faithful love of Mary Magdalene for the dead and buried Jesus (Jn 20:15), and God’s love for us while we were still sinners (Rm 5:8).

Are you called to pour out your heart in unseeing, unrequited love? Ask Jesus to pour out His love in your heart (Rm 5:5). Blind love is greater than blind faith and blind hope (1 Cor 13:13). There is no limit to the power of your unrequited love to endure (1 Cor 13:7).

Prayer: Father, You are Love (1 Jn 4:8). May I continue to love for no other reason than to imitate You.

Promise: "Love never fails." —1 Cor 13:8

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who not only conquered death and the tomb, but ascended and sent the Spirit to teach and defend us.

"YOU ARE THE MAN!" (2 Sm 12:7)
"I have sinned against the Lord." —2 Samuel 12:13

King David’s public life was magnificent. He dealt shrewdly with troops, subjects, and with other powerful nations. God blessed him with great victories and peace from enemies. He was a man after God’s own heart (see Acts 13:22). David composed beautiful songs to give praise to God. He restored the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem and his encouragement led the people of Israel into a time of prosperity as a nation.

Unfortunately, David’s private life was a shambles. In yesterday’s reading, David’s troops were engaged in battle. Kings of other nations were fighting in their battles (see 2 Sm 11:1), but not King David. Instead, as David relaxed, his eyes wandered, and he had an adulterous tryst with the wife of Uriah, a loyal, trusting soldier (2 Sm 11:3-17). He committed not only adultery, but also a most despicable murder of Uriah. Today’s reading reflects the further deterioration of David’s private life: a civil war in his own house, and the beginning of the downward spiral of the nation of Israel (2 Sm 12:14ff).

David sinned greatly. He also repented with his whole heart. God even transformed the sin of David’s adultery into the fruit of continuing the family line from which Jesus would be born (see Mt 1:6). As the saying goes, God writes straight with crooked lines.

What about your life? Do you look good in public, but not in private? Could God admonish you by saying, “You are the man” or “You are the woman”? (see 2 Sm 12:7) Invite Jesus into the boat of your life (see Mk 4:38). Jesus can transform tryst into trust, convert sin into redemption, and change your storms into peace. Repent as David repented and call upon the Lord.

Prayer: "A clean heart create for me, O God" (Ps 51:12).

Promise: Jesus "awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea: 'Quiet! Be still!' The wind fell off and everything grew calm." —Mk 4:39

Praise: Jesus healed young Larry of serious asthma.

DON'T GET IN SATAN'S CAR
"The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab which he sent by Uriah. In it he directed: 'Place Uriah up front, where the fighting is fierce. Then pull back and leave him to be struck down dead.' " —2 Samuel 11:14-15

Satan is “the father of lies” (Jn 8:44) and the master of deception, seduction, and temptation. For example, he got David to murder some of his own soldiers who were risking their lives for David and his kingdom. The soldiers were killed as part of the plot to set up Uriah to be killed in battle (2 Sm 11:17). David had Uriah killed to cover up the fact that he had fathered a child by committing adultery with Uriah’s wife (2 Sm 11:4-5). David committed adultery with her because he was sexually aroused when he “accidently” saw her naked (see 2 Sm 11:2). David was especially susceptible to the timing of this “accident” because he had just risen “from his siesta” (2 Sm 11:2), and he had some time on his hands, as he was not actively fighting in the army. David was not on the front lines possibly because he was a little older and no longer had the strength of the young men.

David may have been in a mid-life crisis. Physically, he may not have been quite what he used to be. Under these circumstances, middle-age men are tempted to assert their virility by promiscuous sexual relations. David fell for this temptation. This put David on the road to being a murderer.

Satan may be tempting you now to set you up to commit a mortal sin a year from now or twenty years from now. Satan makes long, winding roads. Resist him now so that he will not “take you for a ride.”

Prayer: Father, I submit to You, draw close to You, and resist the devil (Jas 4:7-8).

Promise: "Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness; the bones You have crushed shall rejoice." —Ps 51:10

Praise: The Catholic Church and Western Civilization have been enlightened by the profound teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas. He is known as the Angelic Doctor of the Church.

BLESS THIS HOUSE
"By Your blessing the house of Your servant shall be blessed forever." —2 Samuel 7:29

Even more than God blessed David’s house, the Lord wants to bless Christian families and communities, for their members have been baptized into Christ (Gal 3:27), the Son of David and the Son of God.

For our families or communities to receive the Lord’s unfathomable blessings, we should pray — not only individually but together as families or communities. The Lord promises to those who pray communally: “Again I tell you, if two of you join your voices on earth to pray for anything whatever, it shall be granted you by My Father in heaven. Where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in their midst” (Mt 18:19-20).

The Lord is calling you not only to pray together but to pray daily as a family or a community. Daily, communal prayer is one of the main ways the Lord has chosen to open us to receive His blessings. Pope St. John Paul II taught: “The family celebrates the Gospel of life through daily prayer, both individual prayer and family prayer” (The Gospel of Life, 93; see also Church in America, Pope St. John Paul II, 46).

Therefore, no matter how difficult the devil makes it, let us pray together daily as families and communities. We will receive blessings beyond anything we can ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20).

Prayer: Father, may I let You bless me as greatly as You wish.

Promise: "In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides." —Mk 4:24

Praise: St. Angela Merici founded the first teaching, secular order of women in the Church known as the Company of St. Ursula. Their purpose was to teach Catholic principles to future wives and mothers.

DANGER! JESUS IN MASS MEDIA
"He began to teach beside the lake...He began to instruct them at great length." —Mark 4:1, 2

The parable of the sower and the seed is very important because it is the basis for understanding all the other parables (Mk 4:13) as well as understanding God’s kingdom, which is revealed in parables (see Mt 13:24-50). This parable is not primarily about the sower and the seed, but about four conditions of ground. These represent our openness or lack of openness to God’s Word (Mk 4:20). It is difficult to take God’s Word to heart because God’s ways are not our ways (Is 55:8). Our hearts are naturally deceitful (Jer 17:9) and hardened (see Ps 95:8), and the Lord repeatedly challenges us in His Word to repent.

In addition to all these difficulties, we have special problems in taking God’s Word to heart in a large group setting. When Jesus taught the parable of the sower, seed, and grounds, He was sitting in a boat on the water a few feet from the shore and addressing “a huge crowd” (Mk 4:1). Jesus was using the water both for crowd-control and as a medium to project His voice to the masses. He was using a primitive form of mass media. In this context, we tend not to take God’s Word personally. We sit passively waiting to be entertained and look around at the crowd.

This dangerous setting for hearing or not hearing God’s Word is the setting in which we usually hear the Word. When attending Sunday Mass, reading books, watching videos, listening to the radio, and looking at a computer screen or phone, watch out! You are in imminent danger of not taking God’s Word to heart. “Let him who has ears to hear Me, hear!” (Mk 4:9)

Prayer: Father, make me always a doer of Your Word (Jas 1:22).

Promise: "The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but rather One that makes us strong, loving, and wise." —2 Tm 1:7

Praise: "The grace of God has appeared, offering salvation to all" (Ti 2:11). St. Titus, please intercede that all readers of One Bread, One Body persevere in the faith.

FINISHING LINE
"Saul, my brother, I have been sent by the Lord Jesus Who appeared to you on the way here, to help you recover your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." —Acts 9:17

On the way to Damascus, Saul saw a light flash around him. He fell to the ground, heard Jesus’ voice, and was struck blind (Acts 9:3, 4, 8). People have similar experiences every day. We may not realize this because we haven’t been at the right place at the right time due to our disobedience. The Lord is constantly shaking people up. This doesn’t necessarily convert them but prepares them to hear the Gospel message.

The Lord calls people like Ananias to finish the work He’s begun (Acts 9:10, 15). The Lord will put hundreds of fish at the side of the boat but we must throw out the net (Lk 5:4-6). He will assemble outside our house thousands of people from many nations but we must leave the upper room and go into the streets (Acts 2:4ff). The Lord will get an Ethiopian eunuch to read the Bible and drive by, but we must knock on his car door (Acts 8:29ff).

Jesus likes to use people to convert others to Him. He was already talking to Saul. He could have converted Saul Himself, but He chose to work through Ananias. He also wants to work through you. The Sauls are ready to listen. Will you speak in Jesus’ name?

Prayer: Jesus, may I never miss an opportunity to tell someone about You.

Promise: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation." —Mk 16:15

Praise: "I am the least of the apostles; in fact, because I persecuted the church of God, I do not even deserve the name" (1 Cor 15:9). Risen Jesus, thank You for converting St. Paul.

CAN'T CANT
"David was told, 'You cannot enter here.' " —2 Samuel 5:6

Two days ago was the 49th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision legalizing abortion. This precipitated the development in the USA of what Pope St. John Paul II called the “culture of death.” We are so entrenched in this culture of death, violence, and the degradation of the human person that it seems impossible to change the situation. We have been told we cannot stop Planned Parenthood, cannot change the “politically correct” to the “God-correct,” cannot expect people to be pure, and cannot stop our government from financing the holocaust of babies in the womb. Of course, by our own power, we cannot do anything (Jn 15:5). So our pro-death, anti-life enemies are correct. God, however, can do and has done all things. “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Even if this should seem impossible in the eyes of the remnant of this people, shall it in those days be impossible in My eyes also, says the Lord of hosts?” (Zec 8:6) “Ah, Lord God, You have made heaven and earth by Your great might, with Your outstretched arm; nothing is impossible to You” (Jer 32:17).

So don’t be discouraged. Jesus already has won the victory of life over death when He died on the cross and rose from the dead (see Acts 2:24). God’s love has conquered death (see Sg 8:6). Planned Parenthood and the “politically correct” are destined to fall into the same garbage dump of history as did the Third Reich and the Soviet Union. Jesus alone will stand the test of time. He alone will reign supreme.

Worship Jesus, “the Way, and the Truth, and the Life” (Jn 14:6), “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25).

HIS WONDERFUL WORD
"He read out of the book from daybreak till midday, in the presence of the men, the women, and those children old enough to understand; and all the people listened attentively to the book of the law." —Nehemiah 8:3

When the people of God read, hear, revere, obey, and share the Word of God, the Holy Spirit renews the face of the earth (see Ps 104:30). Thus, Jesus began His public ministry reading God’s Word (Lk 4:16). He began His ministry after His Resurrection by interpreting “every passage of Scripture which referred to Him” (Lk 24:27).

When the Church began, she devoted herself to learning and living God’s Word (see Acts 2:42). Throughout history, the Church has been tempted to lose its focus on God’s Word. But she repeatedly accepts the grace to “concentrate on prayer and the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4). We too must devote ourselves “to the reading of Scripture, to preaching and teaching” (1 Tm 4:13). As we sow the seed of God’s Word (see Mk 4:14), we will reap the harvest of salvation (see Rm 1:16).

We have hope in God’s Word, for the Lord approves those who tremble at His Word (Is 66:2). Love and live God’s Word. Make it the “joy and the happiness” of your heart (Jer 15:16). God made the world through His Word (see Ps 33:6; Heb 11:3); He will renew it through His Word.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me Your Word as proclaimed through Your Church.

Promise: "If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members share its joy." —1 Cor 12:26

Praise: "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, God will bring forth with Him from the dead those also who have fallen asleep believing in Him" (1 Thes 4:14). Alleluia!

THE BIG DIFFERENCE
"Alas! the glory of Israel, Saul, slain upon your heights." —2 Samuel 1:19

Saul and David were similar in that they both were:

  • handsome,
  • kings,
  • anointed with the Spirit,
  • powerful,
  • disobedient,
  • murderous and violent, and
  • serious sinners.

Saul and David were dissimilar in that David repented, while Saul did not repent. Saul became involved in the occult (1 Sm 28:8ff) and eventually committed suicide (1 Sm 31:4).

The Lord would have had mercy on Saul if only he had prayed as David did: “Have mercy me, O God, in Your goodness; in the greatness of Your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me” (Ps 51:3-4). The Lord likewise will have mercy on us if we will only repent and cry out: “Lord, have mercy!”

Prayer: "A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. Cast me not out from Your presence, and Your Holy Spirit take not from me. Give me back the joy of Your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain in me" (Ps 51:12-14).

Promise: "Rouse Your power and come to save us." —Ps 80:3

Praise: Allowing God into their marriage made all the difference for Joe and Denise.

"DO GOOD TO THOSE WHO HATE YOU" (Lk 6:27)
"For if a man meets his enemy, does he send him away unharmed?" —1 Samuel 24:20

Jesus and David were both in a position to overcome their bitter enemies, but spared them. David was a seasoned warrior, a man of blood-stained hands (1 Chr 22:8), who had often killed. When he found Saul in a defenseless position (1 Sm 24:4ff), David could have easily killed him. However, David spared Saul, though he knew Saul would continue to seek his life.

A large crowd of armed soldiers came to the Garden of Gethsemani to arrest Jesus. When Jesus confronted them and stated His name, “I AM,” the soldiers all fell to the ground, seemingly paralyzed at the revelation of Jesus’ divine power (see Jn 18:6). Jesus was presented with an opportunity to escape His enemies, and did not. He could have called down twelve legions of angels to rout the soldiers, but did not (Mt 26:53). Instead, Jesus took the initiative to question the soldiers, in essence rousing them to resume their task of arresting Him (Jn 18:7).

Jesus lived what He preached. “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you and pray for those who maltreat you” (Lk 6:27-28). Who are the people in your life who seek to harm you? Can you imitate Jesus and love your enemies?

Prayer: Father, pour out Your Spirit on me. Help me to imitate Jesus every moment of my life.

Promise: "Your kindness towers to the heavens, and Your faithfulness to the skies." —Ps 57:11

THE SIN OF CAIN (see Gn 4:5)
"From that day on, Saul was jealous of David." —1 Samuel 18:9

Saul was jealous of David because David did greater things than Saul had done and became more popular than Saul was (see 1 Sm 18:7). Because of this jealousy, Saul repeatedly tried to kill David (1 Sm 19:1).

Jesus did greater things than the religious leaders of His time. He was so popular that great multitudes “kept pushing toward Him to touch Him” (Mk 3:10). The religious leaders became jealous of Jesus and handed Him over to be crucified by the Romans (Mt 27:18).

The early Church did even greater things through the power of the Holy Spirit than Jesus had done (Jn 14:12). Because of this, the enemies of the Church “became very jealous” (see Acts 13:45) and persecuted the Church, even to the point of killing many Christians.

Even today, the Church is sometimes so united with the Lord that it does His wondrous works and thereby becomes the object of jealousy, persecution, and martyrdom. May the Church show the world something of which to be jealous.

May the world resist the temptation to jealousy. May it yield to Jesus and join the Church. But if the world falls into the sin of jealousy, may the Church be worthy of being persecuted and martyred (see Acts 5:41).

Prayer: Father, I will live for You and die for You.

Promise: "Unclean spirits would catch sight of Him, fling themselves down at His feet, and shout, 'You are the Son of God!' " —Mk 3:11

WAR-TRAINED FINGERS (see Ps 144:1)
"David selected five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pocket of his shepherd's bag." —1 Samuel 17:40

When David went into battle, he carried five “smooth stones” in his shepherd’s bag. When facing the giant in battle, “David put his hand into the bag and took out a stone” (1 Sm 17:49). The giant seemingly had greater weapons, more experience in battle, and was a formidable enemy, ready to kill David with his might. Yet David used the stone and his war-trained fingers and hands to defeat the powerful foe (1 Sm 17:49ff).

My rosary pouch contains a rosary which has 59 “smooth stones” or beads. Many of us carry similar rosary pouches. When I enter into spiritual battle each morning, I place my hand into my rosary pouch just as David put his hand into his shepherd’s bag (1 Sm 17:49). Then I pull out the 59 “smooth stones” and slide the “stones” between my fingers as I pray the rosary. “Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war” (Ps 144:1).

Although the giants we face are well-funded, powerful, and hurling venomous words at us, we are like David in that we confidently pray the rosary against the foes who assail us and the Church. We claim the Biblical promise that “no weapon fashioned against [us] shall prevail” (Is 54:17). We take out our rosaries, take on the battle, and do not allow evil to be unopposed. Though the sight of our meekness in praying the rosary against powerful enemies may seem ridiculous to the world, it is the forces of evil who will ultimately tremble and fall. Fight the good fight with the weapons of God (Eph 6:10-17).

Prayer: Father, in You will I trust without fear (Ps 62:9).

Promise: "It is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves. For the battle is the Lord's." —1 Sm 17:47

Praise: Inspired by watching podcasts about the Church's teaching, Jack, a bodybuilder, converted to the Catholic faith.

FROM WHINING TO WINNING
"The Lord said to Samuel: 'How long will you grieve for Saul, whom I have rejected as king of Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way.' " —1 Samuel 16:1

Like Samuel, we can mope around and be disgusted with the king, president, government, spouse, children, bosses, media, etc., or we can do something about this culture of death. We can pray for those whom the Lord has called to receive the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus announced the year of favor from the Lord, He read from the prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore He has anointed Me” (Lk 4:18; Is 61:1). Only by the Holy Spirit will we see the injustices and oppression of our society removed and replaced by a civilization of love and life.

St. Timothy was surrounded by formidable problems as he pastored the Church of Ephesus. He may have even thought of quitting. St. Paul told Timothy to “stay on in Ephesus” (1 Tm 1:3) by stirring into flame the gift of the Spirit bestowed when Paul’s hands were laid on him (2 Tm 1:6-7).

Don’t grieve (Eph 4:30) or quench the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19), “for there is One greater in you than there is in the world” (1 Jn 4:4). Come out of the desert of depression “in the power of the Spirit” (Lk 4:14). “Renew the face of the earth” (Ps 104:30) by leading others to new life in the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, give me Pentecosts after Pentecosts.

Promise: "You are my Father, my God, the Rock, my Savior." —Ps 89:27

Praise: James witnessed to a stranger during an elevator ride.

SAULS OR PAULS?
"I will correct you." —Psalm 50:21

Saul, the first king of the Israelites, went from bad to worse. He disobeyed God in warfare (1 Sm 15:19), attempted to murder David, became involved in the occult, and committed suicide, in addition to other sins. Many of our political leaders are also getting worse, as they play politics with abortion (even partial birth abortion), euthanasia, pornography, the perversion of homosexual acts, and a multitude of other injustices.

Therefore, “first of all, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all men, especially for kings and those in authority” (1 Tm 2:1-2). “Prayer of this kind is good, and God our Savior is pleased with it” (1 Tm 2:3). “The fervent petition of a holy man is powerful indeed” (Jas 5:16). “Remember this: the person who brings a sinner back from his way will save his soul from death and cancel a multitude of sins” (Jas 5:20).

Some demons cannot be driven out except by prayer and fasting (Mt 17:21). Pope St. John Paul II has taught: “Prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil” (The Gospel of Life, 100). Jesus announced: “The day will come, however, when the Groom will be taken away from them; on that day they will fast” (Mk 2:20). That day is now.

Saul’s namesake in the New Testament was getting worse. He was “a blasphemer, a persecutor, a man filled with arrogance” (1 Tm 1:13). He repented, gave his life to Jesus, and became an apostle, evangelist, missionary, martyr, and saint. Sauls turn to Satan and suicide, or they turn into Pauls. Pray and fast for our Sauls to become Pauls.

Prayer: Father, may I believe in Your power to convert much more than I believe in Satan's power to pervert.

Promise: "To him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God." —Ps 50:23

Praise: "Go and sell what you have and give to the poor; you will then have treasure in heaven. After that, come and follow Me" (Mk 10:21). St. Anthony lived the Lord's command.

NO MORE?
"They have no more wine." —John 2:3

We also say we have no more money, no more time, no more hope, peace, joy, etc. Although the Lord has promised to provide all our needs, we sometimes seem to be lacking our “daily bread” (Mt 6:11).

When we have “no more,” we should listen to Mary and do whatever Jesus tells us (Jn 2:5). If we simply obey Him, He will take the water of our insufficiency and transform it into the wine of His plenty.

Jesus has given us hundreds of commandments, and by His grace we can obey them all. At the center of all these commandments are those which Jesus gave us a few hours before His death on the cross. Jesus gave four commands at the Last Supper: Take, eat, drink, and do the Last Supper in memory of Him (Mt 26:26-27; Lk 22:19). If we do these commands, we will make present Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. From the crucified Christ, blood and water flow, providing the needs of all people (see Jn 19:34).

Do whatever Jesus tells you. Live the Mass. Make it the center of your life. Receive everything you need. Be deprived “no more.”

Prayer: Father, may I let You provide for me royally (see Phil 4:19).

Promise: "It is one and the same Spirit Who produces all these gifts, distributing them to each as He wills." —1 Cor 12:11

Praise: Through faith, we know "that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will raise us up along with Jesus and place both us and you in His presence" (2 Cor 4:14). Alleluia!

INSTANT
"As He moved on He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus at his tax collector's post, and said to him, 'Follow Me.' Levi got up and became His follower." —Mark 2:14

Could the Lord work with you as He did with Levi? Could He call you to leave everything immediately? Jesus, being the Lord, doesn’t always work step-by-step. For example, Saul is out looking for some lost asses and, before he knows it, he’s anointed king (1 Sm 9:3; 10:1). Joseph goes to bed one night and before morning he and his family are on their way to Egypt (Mt 2:14).

Jesus didn’t give the young, rich man much “pre-evangelization.” It was “sell everything now and follow Me” or stay behind (see Mk 10:21). Jesus called more than one of His apostles to quit their jobs without giving two weeks notice (Mt 4:19-22). When someone wanted to follow Jesus but needed to bury his father first, Jesus said: “Let the dead bury their dead; come away and proclaim the kingdom of God” (Lk 9:60).

We live in an “instant” society. We microwave our food or pick it up at a drive-thru window, and expect instant communications with the whole world. We pop a pill for every discomfort. But, when the Lord wants an instant response from us, can we give it? Don’t keep the Lord waiting. “Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!” (2 Cor 6:2)

Prayer: Jesus, may I always give You what You want when You want it. I give You myself unreservedly.

Promise: "From a flask he had with him, Samuel poured oil on Saul's head; he also kissed him, saying: 'The Lord anoints you commander over His heritage.' " —1 Sm 10:1

Praise: Margaret turned down her boyfriend's proposal, confirming his vocation to the priesthood.

WILL THE REAL PARALYTICS PLEASE SIT DOWN?
"When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralyzed man, 'My son, your sins are forgiven.' Now some of the scribes were sitting there." —Mark 2:5-6

Usually today’s Gospel reading is entitled “The Paralyzed Man.” It should be entitled “The Paralyzed Men.” The man on the stretcher wasn’t the only paralyzed person in the room. The scribes were spiritually paralyzed, a much more serious condition than physical paralysis. Because of it, the scribes wouldn’t believe in Jesus. They even refused to rejoice in the paralytic’s healing. Furthermore, the scribes were so paralyzed they could not recognize their paralysis.

In contrast, those who carried the paralytic on a stretcher, broke into the roof, and lowered him down were certainly not paralyzed but truly free (Mk 2:3-4). They didn’t let themselves be paralyzed by fear of failure, rejection, or ridicule. They acted in faith (Mk 2:5), even if they might be embarrassed.

Are you a paralyzed scribe or a free stretcher-bearer? Are you worried about what other people think? Can you share your faith in Jesus openly? Are you free to praise the Lord? Are you afraid to talk to anyone? Is there anyone you’re unable to forgive? Jesus is saying to each of us, “Your sins are forgiven...Stand up! Pick up your mat and go home” (Mk 2:5, 11). Let Jesus heal your spiritual paralysis.

Prayer: In the name of Jesus, I renounce all paralyzing, demonic activity in my life. Thank You, Jesus, for Your victory.

Promise: "Happy the people who know the joyful shout; in the light of Your countenance, O Lord, they walk." —Ps 89:16

Praise: Louise overcame her fears and learned to trust in the Lord.

HELPING TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE? - One Bread, One Body, 01/13/2022

HELPING TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE?
"Why has the Lord permitted us to be defeated today?" —1 Samuel 4:3

The Israelites lost a battle against the Philistines. Four thousand soldiers were killed (1 Sm 4:2). “The elders of Israel said, ‘Why has the Lord permitted us to be defeated today by the Philistines?’ ” (1 Sm 4:3) Then instead of waiting for God’s answer, they went into battle again. “It was a disastrous defeat, in which Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers” (1 Sm 4:10).

Bad things happen to all of us throughout our lives. Naturally, we ask the Lord, “Why?” Naturally, we often go on without receiving God’s answer. Then we do something that makes matters worse. We are easily stampeded by our pain and disappointment into “doing our own thing,” which is often the cause of bad things happening to us. Therefore, bad things usually don’t come one at a time. Our reaction to the first evil often leads to bad things unnecessarily coming in bunches.

You’ve heard the saying: “Don’t just sit there, do something.” When bad things happen, this saying should be reversed: “Don’t just do something, sit there.” For example, after the Israelites lost the battle at Ai, they asked God the reason for their defeat (Jos 7:7). Only after they had received God’s answer and acted on it did they go into battle a second time. Then they won the battle (Jos 8:24).

Stop multiplying bad things. Keep evil to a minimum. Wait and listen to God.

Prayer: Father, still my soul (Ps 131:2).

Promise: "He stayed in desert places; yet people kept coming to Him from all sides." —Mk 1:45

Praise: St. Hilary fought against the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. The Roman Emperor Constantius preferred Arianism, but Hilary never wavered from defending the truth.

IN WITH THE FATHER, OUT WITH POWER - One Bread, One Body, 01/12/2022

IN WITH THE FATHER, OUT WITH POWER
"Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also; for that is why I came out." —Mark 1:38, RSV-CE

In some translations, the text of Mark 1:38 reads “For this purpose have I come” (see Mk 1:38, RNAB). The Greek text for the word translated “come” has the meaning “come out.” After a powerful day of miracles and preaching, Jesus rose early the next morning to go to a “lonely place in the desert” to pray in communion with His heavenly Father (Mk 1:35). It is from this place of deep communion with the Father that Jesus comes out to minister with power and authority.

Likewise, we disciples of Christ, who imitate Jesus in His character and ministry, must fuel our mission with a deep prayer life (see 1 Thes 5:17). Communion with the Lord is our daily fuel, most especially in the Mass with the food of the Eucharist and the Word of God. We sit at the Lord’s feet and listen for His voice, as did Mary of Bethany (Lk 10:39, 42). Then we “come out” of this encounter with the Lord refreshed and renewed for His service.

Are you weary or discouraged? Are you out of ideas and out of energy? Each day, go to the Lord, whether early in the morning (Mk 1:35) or late at night (1 Sm 3:3ff). Then you will be able to come out from the Father with His grace and power.

Prayer: Father, may I live for my daily prayer time with You. Then may others live from the grace that flows from our mutual time together. "Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening" (1 Sm 3:9).

Promise: "Happy the man who makes the Lord his trust." —Ps 40:5

Praise: St. Marguerite used her administrative skills to build God's kingdom in her area of Canada.

OBEY AND DESTROY
"Have You come to destroy us?" —Mark 1:24

The demons spoke to Jesus through the mouth of the possessed demoniac, saying “Have You come to destroy us?” (Mk 1:24) The answer to that question is “Yes.” “It was to destroy the devil’s works that the Son of God revealed Himself” (1 Jn 3:8). Jesus is gentle and humble of heart with sinful human beings (see Mt 11:28-30; 12:19-20). However, Jesus is not gentle with the strongholds of the evil one. He casts out demons and destroys the works of Satan’s kingdom of darkness with power and authority (see Mk 1:27). Jesus “rebuked [the demon] sharply,” commanding the demon to “Be quiet! Come out of the man!” (Mk 1:25)

Today, there are many strongholds of the evil one to be destroyed: abortion, contraception, alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual sins and perversions, hunger, greed, slavery, human trafficking, pornography, generational sin, the attacks on marriage and family, racism, disunity in the Body of Christ, and many more. Jesus, the Son of God, has come to destroy these strongholds. Jesus offers us a share in this work of destruction, once our obedience is complete (see 2 Cor 10:4-6).

Our obedience to God plays a part in whether or not some strongholds of evil are destroyed. Do you want evil destroyed badly enough to obey God in every detail of your life? “Do whatever [Jesus] tells you” (Jn 2:5).

Prayer: Father, I offer You all of my unwillingness to do Your will. Do in me whatever You must in order to do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey!" —Mk 1:27

Praise: Jesus instantly delivered Marie from depression during a healing prayer session.

CARING ENOUGH TO CRY
"Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you refuse to eat?" —1 Samuel 1:8

In 2021, did you bear abundant fruit for Jesus? (see Jn 15:5) How many did you lead to new birth and new life in Jesus? Jesus has called us to be fishers of men and women (Mk 1:17), to work in His harvest (Mt 9:37), to do anything we can to win over as many as possible to Himself (1 Cor 9:19).

Are you fruitful like Mary or barren like Hannah? If we have been barren and have not birthed many people into God’s kingdom, we should first ask for the grace to weep over our barrenness (see 1 Sm 1:6-7). We should be concerned upset with ourselves if we don’t lead people to Jesus and even more concerned upset if we don’t even try to evangelize. After we cry tears of repentance, the Lord may call us to fast (see 1 Sm 1:7). As we grow hungry for food, we also grow hungry for all people to be saved.

After weeping and fasting, we’re ready to pray. Our prayer will be answered, and through the Holy Spirit, we will birth others into new life in Christ. Those whom we lead to Christ will in turn be fruitful themselves and lead others to the Lord. More and more people will love Jesus with all their hearts. The Church will be renewed and our world will be transformed. This will be the best year ever. It all begins with our tears of repentance for not evangelizing.

Prayer: Father, may I exist to evangelize.

Promise: "This is the time of fulfillment. The reign of God is at hand! Reform your lives and believe in the gospel!" —Mk 1:15

Praise: When Thomas was near suicide, he found his Savior.
