June 30th Thirteenth Sunday in ordinary time.
This week Jesus, open us up to really calling You our Lord
and God.
Give us the grace to let go of any fears and problems that
stop us from walking with You all the time.
Let that grace enter into us so strongly that we will be
driven to come and sit with You in adoration and receive
Your precious Body and Blood.
Let that grace strengthen us to continue on this journey
of life with as much peace of heart as possible.
Let us become more and more other Christs to all people,
let us die to self and so willingly give to all others.
Thank You for loving and dying for us.
Amen and Amen.
Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday PLOW-SHARE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=6/30/2013
"Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve
yoke of oxen." -1 Kings 19:19
Elijah called Elisha to become his disciple while Elisha was plowing. This is not an
insignificant detail. When Jesus called one of His disciples, He spoke of discipleship
as putting one's hands to the plow (Lk 9:62). Being a disciple is like plowing.
Disciples have the power to break up hard ground and hard hearts in a hard, hardened,
and hardening world. Without the disciples' plowing, there won't be much of a harvest,
no matter how much seed is sown and no matter how much work is done.
Jesus, before His Ascension, commanded us to make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19).
This entire world needs to be plowed and then sown and harvested. We will never win the
world for Christ until we plow the world for Christ. Therefore, Jesus' disciples must
start plowing and keep plowing without looking back, or they are unfit for the kingdom
of God (Lk 9:62).
Plowing is hard work with hard ground, and the first field we must plow is the field of
our own hardened hearts. Repent and plow! Prophesy and plow! Pray, preach, and plow!
Work, suffer, and plow! Love, die, and plow! Be a disciple; make disciples; plow!
Prayer: Father, as the sweat pours down my brow, may I plow and keep my eyes straight
ahead, focused on You.
Promise: "The flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; the two
are directly opposed." -Gal 5:17
Praise: Alleluia! "Mighty are You, O Lord, and Your faithfulness surrounds You" (Ps 89:9).

One pair of hands healed the cripple, gave hearing to the deaf, gave sight to the blind,
casted out demons, raised the dead, Instituted Eucharist ( so we would have the physical
presence of God), and were then pierced and nailed to a Cross, to save our souls. Jesus's
hands were opened in generosity, because His heart was opened to us, out of His great love,
for us. God made Himself a "Gift" to us. Now what are we going to do with this "Gift". So, now
ask the Holy Spirit, how to move forward with this knowledge of God, by becoming a "gift" for
God, through sainthood.,,,,Do we believe at the core of our being, Jesus is The Lord and He is
leading us,,,,

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
THE HOLY SPIRIT
PENTECOST IS NOW
The Holy Spirit is the soul of mission. The events that took place in Jerusalem
almost two thousand years ago are not something far removed from us; they are events
which affect us and become a lived experience in each of us.
"TAKE TO THE STREETS"
It is the ... Spirit ... Who grant us the courage to take to the streets of the world,
bringing the Gospel! The Holy Spirit makes us look to the horizon and drives us to the
very outskirts of existence in order to proclaim life in Jesus Christ. Let us ask
ourselves: do we tend to stay closed in on ourselves, on our group, or do we let the
Holy Spirit open us to mission?
"GOD'S SURPRISES"
Let us ask ourselves today: Are we open to "God's surprises"? Or are we closed and
fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit? Do we have the courage to strike out
along the new paths which God's newness sets before us, or do we resist, barricaded in
transient structures which have lost their capacity for openness to what is new? We
would do well to ask ourselves these questions all through the day.

FREE SPEECH - One Bread, One Body, 6/29/2013
Saturday, June 29, 2013, Sts. Peter & Paul
Acts 12:1-11, 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18, Psalm 34:2-9, Matthew 16:13-19
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/062913.cfm
FREE SPEECH
"Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with double chains, while guards kept watch at the door. Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood nearby and light shone in the cell." -Acts 12:6-7
St. Peter was in jail on several occasions, and St. Paul was jailed even more frequently. However, both were repeatedly and miraculously freed from jail and for proclaiming God's Word. Because "there is no chaining the word of God" (2 Tm 2:9), there is no chaining those committed to proclaiming God's Word.
Paul connected his rescue from dangers with his preaching of God's Word. He said: "The Lord stood by my side and gave me strength, so that through me the preaching task might be completed and all the nations might hear the gospel. That is how I was saved from the lion's jaws" (2 Tm 4:17).
When we proclaim God's Word, we need not be chained by compulsive behavior, imprisoned by sin, or paralyzed by the fear of death (see Rv 11:11-12). The truth of God's Word sets us free (Jn 8:32). God's Word is the key to freedom. On this glorious feast, turn the key to unlock your chains, spring yourself from prison, and give yourself real freedom.
Prayer: Jesus, Word of God, set me free and I will really be free (Jn 8:36).
Promise: "I will entrust to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you declare bound on earth shall be bound in heaven; whatever you declare loosed on earth shall be loosed in heaven." -Mt 16:19
Praise: Sts. Peter and Paul were each freed from their own weakness and sin. They led others to the freedom only found in God. Both men then preached freedom to both Jews and Gentiles.
(To grow in freedom through God's Word, read the Bible daily. Order our tape series "An Introduction to each Book of the Bible". It is 32 audio tapes starting with AV 21-1 or 17 video tapes starting with V-21.)

SHOW ME THE FRUIT - One Bread, One Body, 6/28/2013
Friday, June 28, 2013, St. Irenaeus
Genesis 17:1, 9-10, 15-22, Psalm 128:1-5, Matthew 8:1-4
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/062813.cfm
SHOW ME THE FRUIT
"That should be the proof they need." -Matthew 8:4
St. Paul was once a "leper" to Christians, a vicious persecutor of those who followed Jesus. He was converted but the community didn't believe it, and wouldn't allow Paul into the circle of Christians. St. Barnabas was convinced of Paul's genuine, authentic conversion and persuaded the community. The best way Paul could give evidence of his healing from "leprosy" was to produce good fruit and so glorify God (see Jn 15:8).
St. Mark was a "leper" in that he deserted the first Christian missionary journey (see Acts 13:13; 15:38). Barnabas gave Mark another chance. While Paul refused to believe that Mark was genuinely healed and ready to evangelize again, Barnabas believed in Mark. The best way Mark could give evidence of his healing was to produce good fruit and so glorify God (see Jn 15:8).
Healed and converted "lepers" are accountable to God, not man. They need not prove themselves before men. However, some people need evidence of full conversion and healing (see Mt 3:8), and the best evidence is fruit (Mt 7:20), that is, undeniable holiness and good works for His kingdom.
All disciples of Jesus are preoccupied with bearing fruit for Him. If we just concentrate on bearing fruit for Jesus, God will take care of everything else we need. "Go forth and bear fruit" (Jn 15:16).
Prayer: Jesus, with my past sins I have been a leper. May I find my identity in You alone and spend the rest my life serving You fruitfully with love.

Promise: Jesus "said: 'I do will it. Be cured.' " -Mt 8:3

ZONING VIOLATION
"Anyone who hears My words but does not put them into practice is like the foolish man who built his house on sandy ground." -Matthew 7:26
No one sets out to build without having blueprints, without having a plan. The architect sets his plan and makes it as hard as rock (Mt 7:25). Foolish individuals build without a plan; eventually their buildings will crumble (Mt 7:27). Jesus calls us to be "wise as serpents" in following Him (see Mt 10:16, RSV-CE). He asks us to plan for the future.
In our planning, it is not enough to say "Lord, Lord" (Mt 7:21). It is necessary to put the Lord's words into practice (Mt 7:24). We must be doers of the Word and not hearers only (Jas 1:22). Jesus approved the one who did His Father's will, not the one who said 'Yes' to God, but failed to do His will (Mt 21:28-32). To do the Word of God means to live it, to plan for the future, to avoid zoning violations.
Jesus is the true Foundation upon which the Church is founded (1 Cor 3:10-11). Our Christian lives have to be built and molded into Him. We must lovingly seek and obey His Word, for reverential acceptance of Jesus Christ by word and deed is the summit of Christian wisdom (Prv 1:7).
Prayer: Lord, assist me to be a doer of the Word and not merely a listener.
Promise: "Happy are they who observe what is right, who do always what is just." -Ps 106:3
Praise: St. Cyril taught truth and fought error as bishop and doctor of the Church. He had to fight some of his own personality extremes as well as the heresies of his day to further God's Kingdom.

COVENANT KNOWLEDGE
" 'O Lord God,' he asked, 'How am I to know?' " -Genesis 15:8
At God's command, Abram left his homeland at age seventy-five (Gn 12:4). "Some time" passed with little visible improvement, and so God decided to reassure Abram of his great future (Gn 15:1, 7). Abram, now quite old, asked God how he could know that this would happen (Gn 15:8). God didn't answer Abram's question with specifics. Instead, God's answer to Abram was: "Make a covenant with Me, and then you'll know for sure" (see Gn 15:9ff).
To the logical, modern mind, God's answer might sound somewhat like the politician who answers his challengers by saying: "Trust me!" We often want to see concrete plans and results before we'll entrust ourselves to someone's promise. The blind trust God requests of Abram and us flies in the face of conventional human wisdom.
How can we know God will make good on His scriptural promises to us? Make or renew a covenant with Him. We make our first covenant with God through our Baptism. If you are already baptized, renew your baptismal covenant and live your Baptism in a new way. In each Mass, we covenant with the Lord when we receive the Eucharist (Lk 22:20). Some people commit themselves to join covenanted Christian communities as a way of living out their baptismal covenant (see Acts 2:42). "Commit to the Lord your way; trust in Him, and He will act" (Ps 37:5).
Prayer: Father, with every Mass I attend, may I enter more deeply into the Paschal mystery and your "new covenant" (1 Cor 11:25).
Promise: "He remembers forever His covenant." -Ps 105:8
Praise: Though dealing with infirmity in her elderly years, Elnora made rosaries and prayed for those who would use them.

THE MASTER'S-PIECE - One Bread, One Body, 6/25/2013

THE MASTER'S-PIECE
"But how narrow is the gate that leads to life, how rough the road, and how few there are who find it!" -Matthew 7:14
God has a plan for your life. He knows exactly how many children He wants you to have. He's got a house picked out for you. He knows the day, hour, minute, and second of your death. The Lord is orchestrating the details of your life to create an unprecedented and unrepeatable symphony of praise to the Father through the Son and in the Spirit. The Master is painting a Master-piece, using the little pieces of your life as His brush strokes.
All we have to do is obey Him, "not turning aside to the right or to the left, but following exactly the way prescribed" for us (Dt 5:32-33). We should get out of God's way, lose our lives (Lk 9:24), choose the narrow way (Mt 7:13), let God do His thing, have His way, and be Lord of our lives. He knows what He's doing, even if we don't. We should trust Him rather than trust ourselves. He died for us and rose from the dead. His love and power are proven. To run our own lives would be the height of foolishness. We are privileged to have the opportunity to surrender our lives to Jesus.
Prayer: Jesus, I repent of my sins. Take over my whole life now and forever.
Promise: "Look about you, and from where you are, gaze to the north and south, east and west; all the land that you see I will give to you and your descendants forever. I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth." -Gn 13:14-16
Praise: Roger and his family gave Jesus all the details of their lives and have never looked back with regret.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND DEATHDAY - One Bread, One Body, 6/24/2013
Monday, June 24, 2013, Birth of St. John the Baptizer

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND DEATHDAY
"She gave birth to a son." -Luke 1:57
The birthday of John the Baptizer is halfway between Christmases. Are you ready for Christmas? Today Jesus may come back and the world may end. Are you ready for Jesus' final coming? If Jesus decided to make this your dying day, would that be fine with you?
Many people, even Christians, are not ready for Christ's comings at Christmas, at the end of the world, or at their deaths. They need John the Baptizer, for his mission is to prepare the way of the Lord (Mk 1:3). He does this by calling us to repentance (Acts 13:24). He also turns "the hearts of fathers to their children and the rebellious to the wisdom of the just, and to prepare for the Lord a people well-disposed" (Lk 1:17). In these ways, John prepares us for the Lord's coming at any time or in any way.
On this birthday, get ready for your deathday, last day, and Christmas day. Respond to John's prophetic message by repenting, forgiving, and changing your lifestyle.
Prayer: Father, I will confess my sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation as soon as possible. St. John the Baptizer, pray for me.
Promise: "Though I thought I had toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent my strength, yet my reward is with the Lord." -Is 49:4
Praise: St. John the Baptizer was overjoyed to hear the voice of Jesus (Jn 3:29). He obeyed Jesus' command, and thereby enabled Jesus to be confirmed in the Father's love and baptized in the Holy Spirit (Mt 3:16-17).
(Learn how redemptive suffering can bring help and healing to our world; attend the Discipleship retreat entitled "Discipleship, Leadership, Redemptive Suffering, and Mary". We look to our Blessed Lady as a model and guide. She brought Jesus to John the Baptist and John prepared the people to receive Jesus. Call 513-373-2397 or e-mail retreats@presentationministries.com to register or for information.)

PM eNewsletter 12th Sunday in ordinary time
June 23rd, 12th Sunday in Ordinary time
This week, oh! Christ, Your church celebrates the birth of St. John the Baptist.
He was the last of the prophets, and the greatest.
His greatness came because he saw You, and believed that You were the Lamb of God, who
came to take away the sins of the world.
Let us also believe with that same intensity as St. John did, so that we may be as
willing to live for the soul purpose of just focusing our lives on You.
Let all our work, our living, and our loving, give praise and glory to You.
Let us be prophets to all, and let us be willing to proclaim You, to all who ask "why
are you different?"
Let us truly help others come to know and believe, that You, truly are the Lamb of God.
Amen and Amen.
Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday PRAYING FOR RENEWAL
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=6/23/2013
"I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace
and petition." -Zechariah 12:10
In renewing a parish, family, or ministry, the Lord often raises the level of prayer. Several
parishioners, family members, or ministry workers pray for a few months as they've never
prayed before or as they've never prayed for years. The Lord makes this prayer a leaven for
renewing great numbers of people.
The Church was born after a nine-day gestation period of intensified prayer (see Acts 1:14).
After this experience, the first Christians devoted themselves to prayer (Acts 2:42). The
apostles concentrated "on prayer and the ministry of the word" (Acts 6:4). On one occasion,
"the place where they were gathered shook as they prayed" (Acts 4:31).
Paul tried to renew the church of Ephesus by raising the level of prayer. The Lord inspired
him to exhort Timothy and the Ephesians: "First of all, I urge that petitions, prayers,
intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all" (1 Tm 2:1). "The fervent petition of a
holy man is powerful indeed" (Jas 5:16).
A praying church is on the threshold of renewal. If we can get several more people to turn
off their TVs and computers, simplify their lives, and thereby free themselves to pray for a
few hours a day, we can open the door for the Lord to renew His Church.
Prayer: Father, may I have "great, intense, and growing prayer" (see Pope John Paul II,
Redeemer of Man, 22).
Promise: "Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each
day, and follow in My steps." -Lk 9:23
Praise: Alleluia! By faith in Jesus risen, we will live forever in the perfect happiness of
heaven!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
THE HOLY SPIRIT
"VERY DANGEROUS!"
Having a sense of the Church is something fundamental for every Christian, every
community and every movement. It is the Church which brings Christ to me and me to
Christ; parallel journeys are very dangerous!
ASK YOURSELF
... Let us ask ourselves: Am I open to the harmony of the Holy Spirit, overcoming
every form of exclusivity? Do I let myself be guided by Him, living in the Church
and with the Church?
"OPEN THE DOORS"
The Holy Spirit draws us into the mystery of the living God and saves us from the
threat of a Church which is gnostic and self-referential, closed in on herself; He
impels us to open the doors and go forth to proclaim and bear witness to the good
news of the Gospel, to communicate the joy of faith, the encounter with Christ.

PRAYING FOR RENEWAL
"I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and petition." -Zechariah 12:10
In renewing a parish, family, or ministry, the Lord often raises the level of prayer. Several parishioners, family members, or ministry workers pray for a few months as they've never prayed before or as they've never prayed for years. The Lord makes this prayer a leaven for renewing great numbers of people.
The Church was born after a nine-day gestation period of intensified prayer (see Acts 1:14). After this experience, the first Christians devoted themselves to prayer (Acts 2:42). The apostles concentrated "on prayer and the ministry of the word" (Acts 6:4). On one occasion, "the place where they were gathered shook as they prayed" (Acts 4:31).
Paul tried to renew the church of Ephesus by raising the level of prayer. The Lord inspired him to exhort Timothy and the Ephesians: "First of all, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all" (1 Tm 2:1). "The fervent petition of a holy man is powerful indeed" (Jas 5:16).
A praying church is on the threshold of renewal. If we can get several more people to turn off their TVs and computers, simplify their lives, and thereby free themselves to pray for a few hours a day, we can open the door for the Lord to renew His Church.
Prayer: Father, may I have "great, intense, and growing prayer" (see Pope John Paul II, Redeemer of Man, 22).
Promise: "Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in My steps." -Lk 9:23
Praise: Alleluia! By faith in Jesus risen, we will live forever in the perfect happiness of heaven!

NOT A WORRY IN THE WORLD? - One Bread, One Body, 6/22/2013
Saturday, June 22, 2013, St. Paulinus of Nola, Sts. John Fisher, & Thomas More

NOT A WORRY IN THE WORLD?
"Stop worrying, then, over questions like, 'What are we to eat, or what are we to drink, or what are we to wear?' " -Matthew 6:31
Many people today are learning about stress management. The Lord wants to do better than that. He teaches us stress banishment. He commands us: "Do not worry about your livelihood, what you are to eat or drink or use for clothing" (Mt 6:25, 31). Jesus questions us: "Which of you by worrying can add a moment to his life-span?" (Mt 6:27) He commands us again: "Enough, then, of worrying about tomorrow" (Mt 6:34).
How can we obey Jesus' commands to stop worrying?
* Serve only one master, that is, God (Mt 6:24).
* "Give yourself to God" alone (Mt 6:24).
* "Look at the birds in the sky" (Mt 6:26).
* "Learn a lesson from the way the wild flowers grow" (Mt 6:28).
* Believe in your heavenly Father (Mt 6:32).
* "Seek first His kingship over you, His way of holiness, and all these things will be given you besides" (Mt 6:33).
Give your life to Jesus, and you won't have a worry in the world.
Prayer: Father, give me Your "peace, which is beyond all understanding" (Phil 4:7).
Promise: "Therefore I am content with weakness, with mistreatment, with distress, with persecutions and difficulties for the sake of Christ; for when I am powerless, it is then that I am strong." -2 Cor 12:10
Praise: After the death of his infant son, St. Paulinus did not become embittered, but only committed his life even more to God.

PROBLEMS?I'LL TELL YOU ABOUT PROBLEMS - One Bread, One Body, 6/21/2013
Friday, June 21, 2013, St. Aloysius Gonzaga

PROBLEMS?I'LL TELL YOU ABOUT PROBLEMS
"If I must boast, I will make a point of my weaknesses." -2 Corinthians 11:30
Have you ever been so flabbergasted in ministry you just want to blow off some steam? Have you ever needed to "speak with absolute foolishness" (2 Cor 11:21) to get the point across about Jesus and His Resurrection? "Now I am really talking like a fool" (2 Cor 11:23). St. Paul must have discerned that deploying such "foolish" speech might be the way to combat false apostles (see 2 Cor 11:13).
St. Paul was inspired to give us his laundry list of sufferings, proving his sincerity as a true apostle. Yet his real boasting was in the Lord (see 2 Cor 12:9). Paul told the fledgling church in Corinth: "we have always acted from God-given holiness and candor; this has been prompted, not by debased human wisdom, but by God's goodness" (2 Cor 1:12).
From the world's perspective, St. Aloysius Gonzaga was also a fool. He was born into nobility and grew up in royal courts. After an emotional tug-of-war with his father, he was permitted to renounce his hereditary right to succession and join the Jesuits. Aloysius further proved his righteous foolishness as he contracted the plague while tending the sick. "Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones" (Ps 116:15).
How will Paul and Aloysius inspire you to be a fool for Christ? (see 1 Cor 4:10) "Remember, where your treasure is, there your heart is also" (Mt 6:21).
Prayer: Father, inspire me to seek Godly wisdom.
Promise: "I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears." __Ps 34:5
Praise: St. Aloysius fought hard for four years to have the freedom to accept his religious vocation.

FALLEN AWAY?
"You may fall away." -2 Corinthians 11:3
The Corinthian church had a "sincere and complete devotion to Christ" (2 Cor 11:3). Nevertheless, Paul feared that they would be seduced by the devil, corrupted in their thoughts, and fall away from their commitment to Christ (2 Cor 11:3). Paul said this because the Corinthian church endured it "quite well" when someone came preaching another gospel (2 Cor 11:4).
Many false gospels are being preached today. The gospels of secularism, consumerism, psychology, new age, self-realization, and prosperity are just a few of the most popular false gospels. Like the Corinthian church, the American church seems to endure these other gospels quite well. We even go so far as to espouse aspects of these gospels in our preaching, books, churches, seminaries, and schools.
Our openness to false gospels is a sign that we are in danger of falling away from "our sincere and complete devotion to Christ." Let's repent, confess our sins in the sacrament of Reconciliation, and make or renew a sincere and complete commitment to Christ. "Be solicitous to make your call and election permanent, brothers; surely those who do so will never be lost" (2 Pt 1:10).
Prayer: Father, grant that I may never "fall away," but love You more each day.
Promise: "If you forgive the faults of others, your heavenly Father will forgive you yours. If you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive you." -Mt 6:14-15
Praise: Mary is ever cautious in teaching what the Church teaches by constantly seeking truth through credible sources.

THE HARVEST-MASTER
"He Who supplies seed for the sower and bread for the eater will provide in abundance; He will multiply the seed you sow and increase your generous yield." -2 Corinthians 9:10
The Lord loves us so much that He wants us to reap a great harvest. The Lord has revealed much to us about harvesting. If we listen, we will reap many great harvests. To reap the harvest of salvation and justice, we must:
* sow bountifully by almsgiving (2 Cor 9:6),
* "sow in tears" of repentance and love (Ps 126:5),
* sow in peace and cultivate peace (Jas 3:18),
* sow secretly, and God the Father will give us a rewarding harvest (Mt 6:4, 6, 18),
* not "sow the wind" of sin and idolatry, for we then "shall reap the whirlwind" (Hos 8:7),
* sow justice to "reap the fruit of piety" (Hos 10:12), and
* do the will of the Father and thereby reap the harvest of eternal life (Jn 4:34, 36).
We reap bountifully when we are not only sowers and harvesters but also seeds. We reap the harvest of eternal life when we are like the grain of wheat which "falls to the earth and dies" to itself (Jn 12:24). The harvests are bountiful on the land watered by the living waters of the Holy Spirit, sprinkled with the blood of our crucified Savior, and cultivated by Christians with their hands firmly on the gospel plow (see Lk 9:62). Listen to the Harvest-Master (see Mt 9:38) and reap accordingly.
Prayer: Father, thank You for teaching us so much about harvesting so that we can receive so many great harvests.
Promise: "In that way no one can see you are fasting but your Father Who is hidden; and your Father Who sees what is hidden will repay you." -Mt 6:18
Praise: St. Romuald fought spiritual enemies with persistence and prayer. His example led his father from being a murderer to being a monk.

SHOW ME THE MONEY - One Bread, One Body, 6/18/2013

SHOW ME THE MONEY
"I am...simply testing your generous love against the concern which others show." -2 Corinthians 8:8
St. Paul organized a collection among the churches of Asia Minor for the starving Christians of Jerusalem. When visiting these churches, Paul publicized the generosity of the poor Macedonian church to spur his hearers to also give generously (see 2 Cor 8:1-4, 8, 24; 9:2-5; 11:9). Paul knew that generous giving reflects the inner trust a person has in God and shows to others "the proof of [their] love" (2 Cor 8:24; Phil 4:15-17).
Though Jesus tells us to keep our deeds of mercy secret (Mt 6:2-4), Paul challenged churches to grow in generosity. Paul wanted his flock to give openly, "for all the churches to see" (2 Cor 8:24). He was "concerned not only for God's approval but also for the good esteem of men" (2 Cor 8:21). Paul was not trying to encourage competition, but rather fraternal generosity.
Paul's public disclosures about the generous giving of other churches resulted in an increase of zeal among Paul's hearers to give generously (see 2 Cor 9:2). He also warned the Corinthian church that he might send along some members of the Macedonian church to observe their collection (2 Cor 9:4). This would give tangible evidence to the Macedonians whether or not the Corinthians had any "trust" in God (2 Cor 9:4).
We might cringe at Paul's appeals. But he would cringe even more at our modern fund-raising methods. The Church in America often raises money with appeals to gambling, games of chance, and sales of alcohol. Paul used preaching, teaching, and an appeal to personal and communal accountability. Guess whose methods resulted in an increase of both generosity and faith?
Prayer: Father, may my money scream: "In God I trust."
Promise: "[Jesus] made Himself poor though He was rich, so that you might become rich by His poverty." -2 Cor 8:9
Praise: Brenda practices giving gifts to others anonymously.

HEALING MERCIES - One Bread, One Body, 6/17/2013

HEALING MERCIES
Jesus said: "You have heard the commandment, 'An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.' But what I say to you is: offer no resistance to injury." -Matthew 5:38-39
In one of his talks, Pope John Paul II remarked that there seemed to have been fewer healings at Lourdes, the major healing center of the world. He thought that this might have indicated fewer healings in general throughout the world. The pope realized the difficulty in knowing how many are healed. However, let us assume that the pope's observation was correct. Why may there be fewer healings?
* Healings, especially for Christians, are often based on faith (e.g. Mt 9:22). Possibly our faith is weak.
* Healings accompany the proclamation of God's word (see Mk 16:15-18). Our lack of evangelization may limit the opportunities for healing.
* The Lord uses medical technology to heal. However, many don't realize that the Lord, not the technology, does the healing.
* No one deserves healing. The Lord heals us in His mercy. Mercy is given especially to the merciful (see Mt 5:7). However, our culture of death is unforgiving and often merciless. Most people, even Catholics, still believe in "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" (see Mt 5:38). We want our rights, even if the price is to execute a few criminals. "Should a man nourish anger against his fellows and expect healing from the Lord?" (Sir 28:3) Will God give His healing mercies to the merciless?
Prayer: Father, may I want my worst enemy to be blessed, loved, healed, and saved.
Promise: " 'In an acceptable time I have heard you; on a day of salvation I have helped you.' Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" -2 Cor 6:2
Praise: Praying for healing for his son, Grant saw the fever leave as he trusted God.

SIN-SENSITIVE - One Bread, One Body, 6/16/2013

SIN-SENSITIVE
"Little is forgiven the one whose love is small." -Luke 7:47
All great saints seem to have so many sins, not because they're great sinners, but because they're great lovers. We all commit many sins, but some are aware of it, while others are not. Love makes a person sin-sensitive. The more we love God, the less sins we commit, but the more we are aware of sins. "I tell you, that is why her many sins are forgiven - because of her great love" (Lk 7:47).
As long as Christianity is perceived to be a rule book, a moral code, or a theology, we are not aware of many sins. However, when it is a personal relationship with a living Savior, then every moment or circumstance is an opportunity for love or a sinful rejection of love. For example, Nathan reminded David that the Lord anointed, rescued, and blessed him. Then he brought up David's sin. Conscious of God's love, David confessed: "I have sinned against the Lord" (2 Sm 12:13).
Think about how much Jesus loves you. He really died and suffered for you. Count your blessings. As love wells up in you, you suddenly notice that you haven't thought of God for three hours, didn't say anything about Him at lunch, let fear stifle the Spirit at work. You have sinned; you have been insensitive to His love and constant presence. Ask Jesus to pour out His love in your heart (see Rm 5:5). Then repent.
Prayer: Father, may Your love sensitize me.
Promise: "I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me." -Gal 2:19-20
Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! You live in us, and we live in You (Jn 6:56; 17:23). Glory be to You forever!

DYING TO LIVE
"The love of Christ impels us who have reached the conviction that since one died for all, all died." -2 Corinthians 5:14
We Christians have reached the conviction that, because of Jesus' death and our appropriation of His death by Baptism and faith, we have died. We "have been crucified with Christ" (Gal 2:19). "After all," we "have died!" (Col 3:3) Because we are dead, "baptized into [Christ's] death" (Rm 6:3), we see life differently. We live no longer for ourselves but for Him (2 Cor 5:15). The life we live now is not our own; Christ is living in us. We still live our human lives, but they are lives of faith in Jesus (see Gal 2:20).
We haven't died physically, but our motivations, priorities, desires, reactions, and attitudes are so different that clearly our old nature has been drowned in the waters of Baptism. The Lord has given us a new birth. We can't be born again until we have died to our old life. We can't be new until the old is dead. We can't rise from the dead until we are dead. We have reached the conviction that death precedes life and in Jesus' death we all can die in order to live with Him. Alleluia!
Prayer: Jesus, may Your saving death be the center and preoccupation of my life.
Promise: "Say, 'Yes' when you mean 'Yes' and 'No' when you mean 'No.' Anything beyond that is from the evil one." -Mt 5:37
Praise: Warren, a family physician, repented of prescribing abortifacient birth-control pills.
(To grow in dying to live in Christ, read the Bible daily. SUMMER AND SEX - One Bread, One Body, 6/14/2013

SUMMER AND SEX
"If your right eye is your trouble, gouge it out and throw it away! Better to lose part of your body than to have it all cast into Gehenna." -Matthew 5:29
Here we are at the beginning of summer. Men and women are walking around half-clothed, hoping to get a tan, adoring the sun-god rather than the Son of God. It's almost impossible to find a movie or even a TV program without nudity displayed. On top of this, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet constantly try to exploit us by arousing our sexual desires. In the midst of this modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah, Jesus proclaims and commands: "What I say to you is: anyone who looks lustfully at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his thoughts" (Mt 5:28).
Thanks be to Jesus for telling us the truth that refreshes and frees. It's so good to know that we aren't just animals, true love can be found, sexuality can be redeemed, and we don't have to feel "dirty," degraded, and defeated.
Jesus knows we are weak, especially in the area of sexual temptation. However, He is strong. We are earthen vessels, but He is the Treasure within the temples of our bodies (see 2 Cor 4:7). We have sinned, but He has taken all our sins to the cross and washed us clean in His blood (see Rv 7:14).
Thank You, Jesus, for breaking the chains of sexual bondage, raising our bodies from the death of sexual sin, and making us pure as You are pure (1 Jn 3:3).
Prayer: Jesus, may I die rather than sin.
Promise: "Indeed, everything is ordered to your benefit, so that the grace bestowed in abundance may bring greater glory to God because they who give thanks are many." -2 Cor 4:15
Praise: In her RCIA team, Jenny speaks the truth about sexual purity.
