"BEAM ME UP" - One Bread, One Body, 7/31/2013

"BEAM ME UP"

"The skin of his face had become radiant while he conversed with the Lord." -Exodus 34:29

Moses was so joyful to be in God's presence and receive the Law that he beamed. He was so radiant that people were afraid to come near him (Ex 34:30). Moses' halo beamed so brightly that he eventually put a veil over his face to protect other people's eyes (Ex 34:35).
After you pray, read the Bible, or receive Communion, are you so radiant that you have to pass out sunglasses to the bystanders? Most of us don't have Moses' problem, but we should. If deep down in our hearts we believe that we have found the precious pearl of God's kingdom, we will glow (see Mt 13:46). If our treasures and hearts are in Jesus, we will have a halo (see Lk 6:45). If our hearts are aware of and overflowing with God's love, we will beam. "The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil" (Sir 13:24). "A glad heart lights up the face" (Prv 15:13).
God's Word today may inspire us to do something we may have never done before - to pray for a halo. This is a legitimate prayer, in accord with the Bible and Church traditions. When we pray for a halo, we are actually praying for a heart to receive and give God's love. Haloes are mere side-effects of knowing God's love in our hearts. Pray for a halo.

Prayer: Father, "beam me up."

Promise: "The reign of God is like a buried treasure which a man found in a field." -Mt 13:44

Praise: St. Ignatius wrote the rough draft for his famous Spiritual Exercises during his first year as a Christian.

DIVINE INTIMACY - One Bread, One Body, 7/30/2013

Tuesday, July 30, 2013, St. Peter Chrysologus

Exodus 33:7-11; 34:5-9, 28, Psalm 103:6-13, Matthew 13:36-43

DIVINE INTIMACY

"Anyone who wished to consult the Lord would go to this meeting tent." -Exodus 33:7

Moses used to pitch the meeting tent. Here Moses met the Lord and brought the people's concerns to the Lord. "The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one man speaks to another" (Ex 33:11). Many Christians envy Moses. They wished they had a tent where they could meet the Lord and speak to Him face to face.
However, we have much better than a meeting tent. We can communicate with God anywhere, not just in one place, not just at scheduled times. Furthermore, we have a communication with God better than face to face. Because God became man, by faith we can live in Jesus and He in us (Jn 6:56, 17:23). This is being closer than close. By His almighty power, Jesus can be simultaneously both inside and outside us. We can even receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in Holy Communion.
Moses never dreamed of the personal, intimate love we can have with the Lord. Instead of us envying Moses, he should envy us because we are the temples of the indwelling Trinity (Jn 14:23; 1 Cor 6:19). Many people question if we have such amazing opportunities for intimacy, love, and communication with God. They reason: "If we have such opportunities, why aren't we in much deeper communion with the Lord?" Because of sin and selfishness, we have not used our opportunities to grow in love for the Lord. We need to repent and begin today to draw closer than close to the Lord.

Prayer: Jesus, may I not merely go to Communion, but be in Communion with You.

Promise: "The saints will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. Let everyone heed what he hears!" -Mt 13:43

Praise: St. Peter's primary tool in teaching was the short sermon, which quickly penetrated hearts, but didn't fatigue them. Over 1500 of his sermons still survive today.

"Martha welcomed Him." -Luke 10:38

The Lord said to Moses: "You have found favor with Me and you are My intimate friend" (Ex 33:17). "The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face" (Ex 33:11). God even let Moses glimpse all His beauty and revealed to Moses His name, "Lord" (Ex 33:19). Moses was God's intimate friend.
"Jesus loved Martha" (Jn 11:5). When He was tired, He rested at Martha's house and "Martha welcomed Him" (Lk 10:38). Jesus even revealed to Martha His title, "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). Martha was Jesus' intimate friend.
Moses and Martha were blessed with a special intimate friendship with the Lord. Can we be as close to Him as they were? That's up to us. Jesus stands at the door of our heart and knocks (see Rv 3:20), saying "Open to Me...My beloved" (Sg 5:2). To be intimate friends means to reveal to the beloved a never-ending increase of delights. The bride and groom in Song of Songs offer delight to each other five times (Sg 1:2; 2:3; 4:10; 5:16; 7:7). Jesus offers to us "the delights at [God's] right hand forever" (Ps 16:11). We in turn offer to Him what He delights in: the love of all our heart, all our mind, all our being, and all our strength (Lk 10:27). Of course, Jesus' ultimate offer of intimacy is the Eucharist, in which we receive into our body the Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Jesus. Receive Him, and be His intimate friend (Jn 15:15).

Prayer: Father, I will find my delight in You, and you will give me the desire of my heart: intimacy with You (Ps 37:4).

Promise: "I am the Resurrection and the Life: whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life; and whoever is alive and believes in Me will never die." -Jn 11:25-26

Praise: "Martha welcomed [Jesus] to her home" (Lk 10:38).

PM eNewsletter 17th Sunday in ordinary time

July 28th 17th Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, this week Your church celebrates a saint who tried
with all of her being to be the perfect hostess.

She got upset when her sister Mary just wanted to sit at
Your feet and listen to You.

Lord, helping others is very important, but we need to be
fed to truly be able to do that.

Give us the grace to listen to Your church, and learn how
to be just stewards of our time and talent.

Lord, help us to see others with Your eyes, and always
with the understanding that we must be strong to help
others get strong.

Jesus, help us to come to You everyday in every way.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday PRAYING IN ABBA'S LOVE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=7/28/2013

"Lord, teach us to pray." -Luke 11:1

Is the Lord satisfied with your prayer life? Pope John Paul II, at the end of his first
encyclical letter, The Redeemer of Man, maintained that our prayer must be "great,
intense, and growing." He also emphasized that the Lord wants our prayer to be combined
with fasting, for the Lord has decided at this time to make prayer and fasting the first
and most effective weapons against our culture of death (The Gospel of Life, 100).
According to these criteria, is your prayer life satisfactory to the Lord?

To pray as the Lord wants us to pray, we must see God as our loving Father. That is the
first thing Jesus taught us about prayer (see Lk 11:2). We must be aware that our Father
sees our prayer and fasting (Mt 6:6, 18). Abraham stopped short in his prayer for the
cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to be spared destruction. His prayer was limited because he:

.wasn't sure whether God was just (see Gn 18:25),
.was even less sure of God's mercy, and
.projected his own interior conflicts onto God and thereby accused God of being impatient
(Gn 18:30) and angry (Gn 18:32).

Abraham had little concept of God being a loving Father, and he prayed and did not pray
accordingly.

We who are in Christ can and must pray always with loving, tender confidence in our
Father. In that way, we will pray as we ought (Rm 8:26).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me in my weakness regarding prayer (Rm 8:26). Cry out in my
heart "Abba" (Rm 8:15).

Promise: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how
much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him." -Lk 11:13

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who teaches us all good things. He is "the Resurrection and the
Life" (Jn 11:25). Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE GOSPEL OF LIFE

REJECTING THE "GOSPEL OF LIFE"

... All too often, as we know from experience, people do not choose life, they do not
accept the "Gospel of Life" but let themselves be led by ideologies and ways of thinking
that block life, that do not respect life, because they are dictated by selfishness,
self-interest, profit, power and pleasure and not by love, by concern for the good of
others.

"A FLASH OF FREEDOM"

It is the idea that rejecting God , the message of Christ, the Gospel of Life, will
somehow lead to freedom, to complete human fulfillment. As a result, the Living God is
replaced by fleeting human idols which offer the intoxication of a flash of freedom, but
in the end bring new forms of slavery and death.

"LOOK TO GOD"

... Let us look to God as the God of Life, let us look to His law, to the Gospel message
as the way to freedom and life. The living God sets us free!

PRAYING IN ABBA'S LOVE

"Lord, teach us to pray." -Luke 11:1

"THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT" - One Bread, One Body, 7/27/2013

Saturday, July 27, 2013

Exodus 24:3-8, Psalm 50:1-2, 5-6, 14-15, Matthew 13:24-30

"THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT"

"This is the blood of the covenant." -Exodus 24:8

Many of us have heard the gospel through the Church and her Scriptures, and we have said: "We will do everything that the Lord has told us" (Ex 24:3). The Israelites said the same thing to Moses. He was led by the Lord "to offer holocausts and sacrifice young bulls as peace offerings to the Lord. Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls; the other half he splashed on the altar" (Ex 24:5-6). If you saw buckets of blood splashed on the altar, what would you think? The Lord taught that life is in the blood (Lv 17:11).
After splashing the blood and "taking the book of the covenant, [Moses] read it aloud to the people, who answered, 'All that the Lord has said, we will heed and do.' Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, 'This is the blood of the covenant' " (Ex 24:7-8). If you had blood sprinkled on your face, in your hair, spotting your clothes, in your eye, and on your lips, what would you think? Obeying God is a matter of life and death.
Jesus commands us to drink His Blood (Mt 26:27-28; Jn 6:53ff). This is so great and mysterious that we are shocked by His command to drink Jesus' Blood, that is, God's Blood. When we drink God's Blood, we are not only in obedience but in communion. We are in eternal life.
As we come to the end of July, the month traditionally dedicated to Jesus' precious Blood, let us receive the precious Body and Blood of Jesus as never before. Let us have a "first Communion."

Prayer: Jesus, give me eternal life through Your Blood.

Promise: "Call upon Me in time of distress; I will rescue you, and you shall glorify Me." -Ps 50:15

Praise: John prays at every Mass to receive the Eucharist worthily.

ROBBED BLIND? - One Bread, One Body, 7/26/2013

Friday, July 26, 2013, Sts. Joachim & Ann

ROBBED BLIND?

"The evil one approaches him to steal away what was sown in his mind." -Matthew 13:19

How much of God's Word have you heard over the years at home, in church and school, through reading and teaching? How much of God's Word do you know and live? The difference in the answer to these two questions shows us how much of the Word the evil one has robbed from us. Many of us have been exposed to God's Word for years but have little to show for it. The devil has literally robbed us blind. We don't even report it to the authorities or call for help. We merely resign ourselves to Satan daily robbing us of the Word of life.
God's Word tells us: "Submit to God; resist the devil and he will take flight" (Jas 4:7). We can rob the robber and retrieve all that the devil has stolen (see Lk 11:22). We do this by faith in Jesus Christ, expressed in prayer and obedience. The Holy Spirit will enable us to remember passages from God's Word we haven't recalled for years. We will apply the Word so as to be holy in every aspect of our lives (1 Pt 1:15).
Jesus knows how to prevent the devil's thievery. Report any theft to Jesus, the Authority. We need Jesus to deliver us from the evil one (Mt 6:13). Jesus will not only sow the seed, but guard it.

Prayer: Jesus, I've been robbed several thousand times. Please recover the stolen goods.

Promise: "Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you." -Ex 20:12

Praise: The names of Saints Joachim & Ann mean "the Lord raises up" and "grace." Mary, Joachim, and Ann, pray for us to adore and love Jesus as you did.

(To help others to retrieve God's Word, be a Bible teacher. For encouragement, order our tapes on the "Bible Teachers Series". Our six-tape audio series starts with AV 117-1. Our three-part video series starts with V-117.)

THANK YOU - One Bread, One Body, 7/25/2013

Thursday, July 25, 2013, St. James

2 Corinthians 4:7-15, Psalm 126:1-6, Matthew 20:20-28
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/072513.cfm

THANK YOU

"Death is at work in us, but life in you." -2 Corinthians 4:12

James was one of the Twelve and he boldly spread the Gospel (Mk 3:16-17). His witness as a foundational leader of the Church (see Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14) echoes throughout eternity. He prayed constantly after Jesus' Ascension (Acts 1:14). "During that period, King Herod started to harass some of the members of the Church. He beheaded James the brother of John" (Acts 12:1-2). St. James' sacrificial life led to a sacrificial death, yet warranted only one sentence in Scripture (Acts 12:2). James didn't get much credit in Scripture for being the first martyr, and he might not get much from us either. Have you thanked a martyr lately?
Many readers of One Bread, One Body have toiled in solitude, dutifully performing mundane tasks to build up God's Kingdom. You probably don't get much credit or thanks, either. Nevertheless, "whatever you do, work at it with your whole being. Do it for the Lord rather than for men, since you know full well you will receive an inheritance from Him as your reward. Be slaves of Christ the Lord" (Col 3:23-24).
Are you jealous of those with less responsibility, yet who receive more thanks from others? "It cannot be like that with you. Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest, and whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all" (Mt 20:26-27). For when we truly love and serve Jesus, what matters to us is not how much thanks we receive, but how much thanks He receives.

Prayer: Jesus, here is my body, to be given up for You.

Promise: "Those that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing." __Ps 126:5

Praise: Although St. James fled from the crucifixion, he boldly returned to Jerusalem to risk being beheaded.

GOD IS LIKE THE RAIN - One Bread, One Body, 7/24/2013

Wednesday, July 24, 2013, St. Sharbel Makhluf

Exodus 16:1-5, 9-15, Psalm 78:18-19, 23-28, Matthew 13:1-9

GOD IS LIKE THE RAIN

"A farmer went out sowing." -Matthew 13:4

It seems that God isn't very efficient. He sows manna and quail like "rain" (Ex 16:4; Ps 78:27). It lands everywhere, all over the camp, all over the desert ground, available to both the humble and those who grumble (Ex 16:13). He sows the Word like "the rain" (see Is 55:10-11). It lands everywhere, even on the footpath and the rocks and among thorns where it seemingly can't grow (Mt 13:4-7). The Lord even sends real rain to nourish the ground everywhere, on the land of the just and the unjust (Mt 5:45).
Praise God that He sends His Word everywhere - to the illiterate, marginalized, grumblers, criminals, sinners, to those who hate Him and those who hunger for His Word. "Learn a lesson from the way" God sows His Word and His grace (Mt 6:28). Have the attitude of God's agents, His rainclouds. They drop rain everywhere they are. Likewise, sow God's Word everywhere. Don't worry about wasting your effort, conserving your strength, or being efficient with your evangelization. Keep it simple. Think God's rain, think God's reign, and just get the Word out.

Prayer: Father, who am I to decide who is unable to receive Your Word and Your blessings? May I sow bountifully so You may reap bountifully (2 Cor 9:6).

Promise: "He commanded the skies above and the doors of heaven He opened; He rained manna upon them for food and gave them heavenly bread." -Ps 78:23-24

Praise: St. Sharbel was a Lebanese monk who lived for twenty-three years as a hermit. St. Sharbel, pray for peace in the Middle East.

"A STRONG, DRIVING WIND" (Acts 2:2) - One Bread, One Body, 7/23/2013

Tuesday, July 23, 2013, St. Bridget of Sweden

Exodus 14:21-15:1, Exodus 15:8-10, 12, 17, Matthew 12:46-50

"A STRONG, DRIVING WIND" (Acts 2:2)

"The Lord swept the sea with a strong east wind throughout the night and so turned it into dry land." -Exodus 14:21

God's will can be compared to a hurricane. In the eye of a hurricane, there is a remarkable stillness despite the turmoil only a few miles away. Likewise, in the center of God's will is complete calm and peace passing all understanding despite the chaotic circumstances that swirl around us (see Phil 4:7).
The Israelites were surrounded with severe problems: a hostile army behind and the impenetrable sea ahead. God sent a strong rushing wind which parted the water. The Israelites walked to safety, only feet from drowning, just barely ahead of the destroying armies. The trick is to stay exactly in the center of God's will. Therein lies safety and peace.
The Egyptians, however, were not centered in God's will. They experienced the will of God as a tumultuous, destructive force. To them, the Lord was a "warrior" (Ex 15:3). St. Paul was once outside God's will. The Lord warned him that resisting His will was like kicking against the goad (Acts 26:14), an act which causes sharp pain to the kicker, but doesn't harm the Lord.
If you're not living according to God's will for your life, repent! Ask for the "strong, driving wind" of the Holy Spirit to blow you out of disaster and into the center of His will (Acts 2:2). Let the wind of the Spirit blow where it will (Jn 3:8). Be swept into a new Pentecost.

Prayer: Father, "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (Mt 6:10).

Promise: "Whoever does the will of My heavenly Father is brother and sister and mother to Me." -Mt 12:50

Praise: St. Bridget worked tirelessly for the spread of the faith. She wrote letters to cardinals, popes, and secular leaders, leading them to repentance.

"GOD IS AGAPE" (1 Jn 4:16, our transl.) - One Bread, One Body, 7/22/2013

Monday, July 22, 2013, St. Mary Magdalene

Song of Songs 3:1-4 or, 2 Corinthians 5:14-17, Psalm 63:2-6, 8-9, John 20:1-2, 11-18

"GOD IS AGAPE" (1 Jn 4:16, our transl.)

"Tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away." -John 20:15

God is Love (1 Jn 4:16), but He is not just any kind of love. He is "agape-love." Agape is the Greek word that appears in the Scriptures which means unconditional love. God loves each one of us perfectly and infinitely. He loves Judas and Hitler as much as He loves Mary, the mother of God. He loves us even though we helped crucify His Son by our sins. He loves us whether or not we ever love Him. He loves us even if we decide to never love Him, even if we decide to hate Him and be alienated from Him forever.
Mary Magdalene loved Jesus with unconditional love. She asked to take away the dead body of Jesus (Jn 20:15). She wanted to hold His body even if He couldn't touch, hear, or speak to her. To hold Jesus' body would give her extreme pain, but she wanted to hold it anyway. She loved Jesus unconditionally.
Do you love Jesus when He seems dead to you? Would you love Jesus if He never answered any of your prayers? (see Hab 3:17-18) Would you love Him if you never felt Him? Would you love Him if He permitted all your children to die in one day? (see Jb 1:19-21) Would you die for love of Him (see Dn 3:18) even if He let you suffer terrible pain and disease? (see Jb 2:7)
God is Love (1 Jn 4:8). Receive His love, and love Him with that same unconditional love. St. Mary Magdalene, pray for us.

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever it takes for me to love You unconditionally.

Promise: "The love of Christ impels us who have reached the conviction that since One died for all, all died. He died for all so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for Him Who for their sakes died and was raised up." -2 Cor 5:14-15

Praise: St. Mary Magdalene, once possessed by seven demons (Lk 8:2), freely gave herself to the One Who set her free.

PM eNewsletter 16th Sunday in ordinary time

July 21st 16th Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, we have all sinned and fallen far from Your presence.

We need to see examples of those who You have touched and
freed them from their sinful ways.

This week, Jesus, Your church celebrates a feast of a lady
who loved You dearly and followed You all the way to the cross.

Mary Magdalene was a sinner who You freed from the clasp of satan.

When she was freed, she walked with You everyday for the rest
of Your earthly life.

Give us all that same freedom from serious sin, and help us
to follow You everyday, by picking up our crosses of life,
and knowing that You are with us always.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday PRAYER IS EVEN BETTER
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=7/21/2013

"Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived
of it." -Luke 10:42

Hospitality was a responsibility and privilege highly valued by
the Jewish people. In offering hospitality, we may be entertaining
angels (Heb 13:2) or even God Himself (Gn 18:17ff). Abraham and
Sarah, for example, offered hospitality to God and two angels. As
a result, God promised them they would miraculously have a son,
although both were almost a hundred years old (see Gn 18:10).
Hospitality is the breeding ground of promise, blessing, and
miracles.

As awesome as hospitality is, Jesus claimed that prayer is even
better (Lk 10:42). This was a surprising revelation. Jesus even
maintained the necessity of praying always (Lk 18:1; cf 1 Thes 5:17).
He did this Himself, praying early in the morning and late at night
(Mk 1:35; Lk 22:39ff). Jesus prayed in such a new way that people
who had prayed for years asked Him to teach them to pray (Lk 11:1).

After Jesus ascended into heaven, His disciples caught onto Jesus'
message on prayer and devoted themselves to constant prayer for
nine days (Acts 1:14). The Church was born after this nine-day
gestation period of prayer. From that point on, the Spirit has
empowered the followers of Jesus to devote themselves to prayer
(see Acts 2:42).

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to pray (Lk 11:1). Holy Spirit, help me
overcome my weakness in prayer (Rm 8:26).

Promise: "Even now I find my joy in the suffering I endure for
you. In my own flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings
of Christ for the sake of His body, the church." -Col 1:24

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who opened wide the doors to His Father's
house! "Praise the name of the Lord, for His name alone is exalted;
His majesty is above earth and heaven" (Ps 148:13).

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE GOSPEL OF LIFE

A FREE AND FULFILLING LIFE

I ... think of the gift of the Ten Commandments: a path God points out to us towards a
life which is truly free and fulfilling

"A YES TO GOD, TO LOVE, TO LIFE"

The commandments are not a litany of prohibitions - you must not do this, you must not
do that, you must not do the other ; on the contrary, they are a great "Yes!": a yes to
God, to Love, to life. Dear friends, our lives are fulfilled in God alone, because only
He is the Living One!

A CHRISTIAN IS ...

The Christian is someone who thinks and acts in everyday life according to God's will,
someone who allows his or her life to be guided and nourished by the Holy Spirit, to be
a full life, a life worthy of true sons and daughters.

PRAYER IS EVEN BETTER - One Bread, One Body, 7/21/2013

Sunday, July 21, 2013, 16th Sunday Ordinary Time

Genesis 18:1-10, Colossians 1:24-28, Psalm 15:2-5, Luke 10:38-42

PRAYER IS EVEN BETTER

"Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it." -Luke 10:42

Hospitality was a responsibility and privilege highly valued by the Jewish people. In offering hospitality, we may be entertaining angels (Heb 13:2) or even God Himself (Gn 18:17ff). Abraham and Sarah, for example, offered hospitality to God and two angels. As a result, God promised them they would miraculously have a son, although both were almost a hundred years old (see Gn 18:10). Hospitality is the breeding ground of promise, blessing, and miracles.
As awesome as hospitality is, Jesus claimed that prayer is even better (Lk 10:42). This was a surprising revelation. Jesus even maintained the necessity of praying always (Lk 18:1; cf 1 Thes 5:17). He did this Himself, praying early in the morning and late at night (Mk 1:35; Lk 22:39ff). Jesus prayed in such a new way that people who had prayed for years asked Him to teach them to pray (Lk 11:1).
After Jesus ascended into heaven, His disciples caught onto Jesus' message on prayer and devoted themselves to constant prayer for nine days (Acts 1:14). The Church was born after this nine-day gestation period of prayer. From that point on, the Spirit has empowered the followers of Jesus to devote themselves to prayer (see Acts 2:42).

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to pray (Lk 11:1). Holy Spirit, help me overcome my weakness in prayer (Rm 8:26).

Promise: "Even now I find my joy in the suffering I endure for you. In my own flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His body, the church." -Col 1:24

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who opened wide the doors to His Father's house! "Praise the name of the Lord, for His name alone is exalted; His majesty is above earth and heaven" (Ps 148:13).

LOVING TO HEAL - One Bread, One Body, 7/20/2013

Saturday, July 20, 2013, St. Apollinarius

Exodus 12:37-42, Psalm 136:1, 23-24, 10-15, Matthew 12:14-21

LOVING TO HEAL

"Many people followed Him and He cured them all, though He sternly ordered them not to make public what He had done." -Matthew 12:15-16

Many of Jesus' healings were signs that the kingdom of God was at hand. Yet Jesus ordered some of those healed early in His ministry to not make their healings public. Early in Jesus' public ministry, the general understanding of the kingdom of God and the mission of Jesus was not yet developed. So His early healings may not have been signs of his kingdom. It's very likely that Jesus' purpose in healing these people was simply love. He loved people so much that He didn't wait for the kingdom to develop before bringing them comfort and healing.
On several occasions, those who were healed disobeyed Jesus and publicized their healings. This made things difficult for Jesus. He could not enter towns openly but had to stay in desert places (Mt 1:45). Furthermore, His mission was misunderstood. In particular, His message of the cross was largely ignored. Nevertheless, Jesus healed people knowing that this would make His work much more difficult. Jesus loved people so much it was difficult for Him not to heal immediately.
Jesus is the same today (see Heb 13:8). He wants to heal us much more than the most desperately suffering person wants to be healed, because He loves us much more than we love ourselves. He wants to love, save, and heal us so much that He became a man and died on the cross for us. "By His wounds you were healed" (1 Pt 2:24).

Prayer: Jesus, by repenting of my sins, may I let You love and heal me.

Promise: "In His name, the Gentiles will find hope." -Mt 12:21

Praise: St. Apollinarius continued to return to the place where he was being persecuted in order to spread the Gospel.

CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULE - One Bread, One Body, 7/19/2013

CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULE

"This month shall stand at the head of your calendar; you shall reckon it the first month of the year." -Exodus 12:2

As the Israelites prepared to eat the first Passover meal, God gave them a command that revolutionized their lives. He changed their calendars. The calendar would now be based on Passover. Slavery to a schedule controlled by others was now replaced by a schedule headlined by God. Worship would now take priority over work. After eating the Passover, God led His people through the Red Sea into a new freedom based on His lordship over time.
Before Passover, the Israelites were slaves to a different calendar. The Egyptian taskmasters controlled their schedule, filling their days, weeks, and months with long hours on the job. Many of you understand this well. You long for free time, but you are slaves to your schedule. You need Jesus to deliver you through a new Passover.
There is great news! You have been given a new Passover, called the Mass (1 Cor 5:7). The Mass is outside of time. When you give Jesus your all at Mass, He can multiply your time.
Change your calendar. Put Mass, the New Passover, at the top of your schedule. Attend Mass daily, or at least desire to do so. Give worship priority over all else. Come to the eucharistic Jesus and receive timely help (Heb 4:16, RNAB).

Prayer: "How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the Lord" (Ps 116:12-13).

Promise: "The Son of Man is indeed Lord of the sabbath." -Mt 12:8

Praise: Lorraine found that the more time she gave to God, the faster her housework was accomplished.

"MORE THAN WE BARGAINED FOR" - One Bread, One Body, 7/18/2013

Thursday, July 18, 2013, St. Camillus de Lellis

"MORE THAN WE BARGAINED FOR"

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you." -Matthew 11:28

Jesus commands the weary and burdened to come to Him to be refreshed. This is unusual because you normally don't have to command weary people to seek refreshment. Nevertheless, weary and burdened people are reluctant to come to Jesus because He will not only give them refreshment and rest, but also His yoke and burden (Mt 11:29-30). Jesus will not take orders from us, but give orders to us. He will be our Lord.
For example, the Israelites came to the Lord to ask Him to free them from slavery in Egypt. The Lord did this, and also led them into the discipline of the desert. He gave them the Ten Commandments along with a few hundred other commandments. The Israelites rebelled because they didn't like the austerities of the desert and the self-denial called for by the commandments.
God did what the people wanted and much more. This is why we are reluctant to come to Jesus for refreshment and rest - because He will give us more than we bargained for. Like Jesus' hometown folk, we find Jesus "too much" for us (Mk 6:3).

Prayer: Jesus, may I let You love me more.

Promise: God said: "I am concerned about you and about the way you are being treated." -Ex 3:16

Praise: St. Camillus was rejected twice as a novice because of a leg ulcer, which led him to a life of ministry to the incurably ill.

THE BURNING LOVE OF GOD - One Bread, One Body, 7/17/2013

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

THE BURNING LOVE OF GOD

"The bush, though on fire, was not consumed." -Exodus 3:2

Consider a burning candle. The flame on the candle eventually burns out when the wax is all consumed. In Jesus, however, we are not like candles which burn out, but rather like the burning bush, which is neither burned out nor consumed (Ex 3:2).
Some people are afraid to receive God's love. They fear that the fire of God's love will consume them (Heb 12:29), and they will never be the same. Immersed in God's love, they know they'll have to repent and be dedicated to holiness (Ex 3:5). Yet just as Moses was drawn to the burning bush by the awesomeness of the sight, God's love attracts people despite their fears.
God's burning love is a Trinity-love, the fire of love which perpetually arcs between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God pours this burning Trinity-love, consuming but not destructive, into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5). Nothing can separate us from this love (Rm 8:38-39).
Be like Moses. Walk toward God, not away from Him. Remove not only your sandals, but any love for the things of the world (1 Jn 2:15). Don't be afraid of the overpowering love of God. Many have been hurt by failed human love, but the love of God never fails (1 Cor 13:8). Abandon yourself to God's love. Your entire life has been a search for His love. Be true to yourself and true to God. Live in His love (Jn 15:9).

Prayer: Triune God, change me from being a consumer into being the consumed. I yield totally to Your burning love.

Promise: "The Lord secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed." -Ps 103:6

Praise: After years away from the sacraments, Dora allowed God entrance into her heart and became a daily communicant.

USELESS CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE?

"Now a certain man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman, who conceived and bore a son. Seeing that he was a goodly child, she hid him for three months." -Exodus 2:1-2

Moses' mother disobeyed the law. She refused to throw her baby boy into the river to be drowned, as prescribed by Pharaoh's decree (Ex 1:22). This act of civil disobedience seemed totally useless. She hid the baby for three months and then put him in a basket to float on the water rather than directly throw him into the water (Ex 2:2-3). The baby Moses was miraculously saved. Eighty years later, the Lord used Moses to set the entire Israelite nation free from slavery. The Lord used the seemingly useless civil disobedience of Moses' mother, which was actually divine obedience, in an amazing way.
The Lord is calling you to do something that seems useless. If you do the Lord's will, you will seem to be only delaying the inevitable. Nevertheless, you are being called to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Cor 5:7). You will feel that you have "toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent" your strength (Is 49:4). However, the Lord is calling you to obey Him not because you understand His command, but because you have accepted Jesus as Lord and have become His disciple.
In the end, doing seemingly useless things in God's will is usually the most useful of all. Even when they aren't, we should still do them because of love for God. The Lord is not primarily calling us to be successful but to be faithful. We should ask others to help us discern God's will and then do it.

Prayer: Father, may I not lean on my own understanding (Prv 3:5).

Promise: "See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts be merry! For the Lord hears the poor." -Ps 69:33-34

Praise: According to tradition, the Carmelite orders are all based on a crusader's vision of Elijah on Mount Carmel. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

"PRESERVE LIFE" (Mk 3:4) - One Bread, One Body, 7/15/2013

"PRESERVE LIFE" (Mk 3:4)

"Come, let us deal shrewdly with them to stop their increase." -Exodus 1:10

The Lord's first words to the newly created human race were: "Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth" (Gn 1:28). In reaction, Satan tries to stop our increase by oppressing and enslaving us (see Ex 1:11-14) and by passing anti-life legislation (see Ex 1:22). We must refuse to take part in the "politically correct," contraceptive, and abortifacient prejudice of our society. We must also refuse to buy into the ungodly economic system, which is an essential aspect of our anti-life culture (see Rv 13:16-17).
Like Moses, we must challenge the system. We must insist on the priority of communal worship over secular work (see Ex 5:1). We must refuse to let ourselves be manipulated by Pharaoh, Egypt, "the love of money" (1 Tm 6:10), and our fleshly desire for possessions (see Gal 5:17).
We won't obey God's first command to us and fill the earth with life until we stop contraception and abortion. We won't stop the culture of death until we stop compromising economically with the ways of the world. Therefore, work for imperishable food (Jn 6:27), get out of debt (see Rm 13:8), simplify your life, and build Christian community. Work to "preserve life" (Mk 3:4).

Prayer: Father, show me the relationship between economics and the anti-life attitudes of our society.

Promise: "He who seeks only himself brings himself to ruin, whereas he who brings himself to nought for Me discovers who he is." -Mt 10:39

Praise: St. Bonaventure wrote the inspiring biography of St. Francis of Assisi. Praise You, Lord Jesus, for the communion of saints!
