HIS ATTITUDE

"Your attitude must be that of Christ." -Philippians 2:5

We can have not only the heart and mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16) but also His attitude. Christ's attitude was to empty (Phil 2:7) and humble "Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!" (Phil 2:8) The Lord's attitude is "gentle and humble" (Mt 11:29). He came to serve, not to be served (Mt 20:28). He tells us to take the lowest place (Lk 14:10). The Lord "guides the humble to justice, He teaches the humble His way" (Ps 25:9). The Lord teaches us to "think humbly of others as superior" to ourselves and to look "to others' interests rather than" our own (Phil 2:3, 4).

The Lord's attitude is graphically expressed by the manger in Bethlehem, the cross on Calvary, and by offering Himself to us under the appearances of bread and wine. Jesus' attitude is humble, obedient, unselfish, crucified, glorified, astounding, and mysterious. Amazingly, the Lord commands and graces us to have in us the same attitude that is in Him (Phil 2:5). Get His attitude!

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me the attitude of Jesus.

Promise: "If a wicked man, turning from the wickedness he has committed, does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life; since he has turned away from all the sins which he committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die." -Ez 18:27-28

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, "gentle and humble of heart" (Mt 11:29). Be glorified in the world through our lives.

(Grow in humility by reading the Bible each day. A tape series that may help you is "An Introduction to each Book of the Bible". It is thirty-two audio tapes starting with AV 21-1, "Matthew and Mark", or seventeen video tapes starting with V-21.)

MEASURING UP OR MEASURING DOWN?

"A man with a measuring line in his hand..." -Zechariah 2:5

In a vision, the prophet Zechariah raised his eyes and saw a man measuring Jerusalem in preparation for her restoration (Zec 2:6; see also Ez 40:3). St. John, the apostle and evangelist, was also given a measuring rod to "take the measurements of God's temple and altar, and count those who worship there" (Rv 11:1). God's people were measured to be protected from destruction.

The Lord is still measuring people. On the Church's first day, the Lord measured the size of His Church, and she numbered three-thousand believers (Acts 2:41). The Lord measures not only the Church's number but also her holiness. Eventually and finally, the Church will measure up to His standards: "a glorious Church, holy and immaculate, without stain or wrinkle or anything of that sort" (Eph 5:27). The Lord also measures out time, talents, treasures, and so much more. If He gives us five talents, He expects us to return to Him five more (Mt 25:15ff).

The Lord is measuring each of us right now. He is giving us the grace to measure up before the final measuring on Judgment Day. Are you measuring up or "measuring down"?

Prayer: Father, may I know "the immeasurable scope" of Your "power in us who believe" (Eph 1:19).

Promise: "I will turn their mourning into joy, I will console and gladden them after their sorrows." -Jer 31:13

Praise: St. Jerome translated most of the Bible into Latin. He also wrote commentaries on the Gospels. Praise You, Jesus, Living Word, for the ministry of St. Jerome!

REALITY CHECK - One Bread, One Body, 9/29/2017

Friday, September 29, 2017, Archangels

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 or, Revelation 12:7-12, Psalm 138:1-5, John 1:47-51
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092917.cfm

REALITY CHECK

"His throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. A surging stream of fire flowed out from where He sat; thousands upon thousands were ministering to Him." -Daniel 7:9-10

Many people have a false impression of angels. They think angels are cute or sweet. This false impression contributes to a skewed view of God and of the entire plan of salvation. Many people think that life is a game and that life in Christ is nice, but not necessary.

The fact is that angels are formidable and even terrifying. The name "Michael" means "Who is like God?" This is an in-your-face challenge to repent and humble yourself. The archangel Gabriel doesn't tolerate any foolishness. When Zechariah didn't immediately believe a message from Gabriel, the archangel said to Zechariah: "Now you will be mute - unable to speak - until the day these things take place, because you have not trusted my words" (Lk 1:20). If you don't talk properly to an angel, you may not talk at all. Moreover, the archangel Raphael doesn't seem to feel any "warm fuzzies" for us. He bluntly states: "As for me, when I came to you it was not out of any favor on my part, but because it was God's will" (Tb 12:18).

Angels don't necessarily make you feel good about yourself. Rather, the true understanding of angels confronts us with reality to check us from making God in our own image and likeness, and thereby warping Christianity past recognition. Believe divine revelation about angels, tremble at God's Word (Is 66:2), and know that "it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Heb 10:31), for He is a consuming Fire of love (Heb 12:29).

Prayer: Father, on this day give me the fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10).

Promise: "You shall see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." -Jn 1:51

Praise: "Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord, praise and exalt Him above all forever" (Dn 3:58).

THE FULL GOSPEL - One Bread, One Body, 9/28/2017

Thursday, September 28, 2017, St. Wenceslaus, St. Lawrence Ruiz

Haggai 1:1-8, Psalm 149:1-6, 9, Luke 9:7-9
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092817.cfm

THE FULL GOSPEL

"Consider your ways! You have sown much, but have brought in little." -Haggai 1:5-6

Have you worked hard but gotten little out of it except a feeling of discontent? Have you eaten, bought, or consumed a lot but "not been satisfied"? (Hg 1:6) Have you stimulated yourself through drinking, distractions, sexual sin, sports, or entertainment but "not been exhilarated"? (Hg 1:6) Do you have a sense of emptiness and loss?

We can be empty for many reasons. One common reason is that we may have put our concerns before those of God (Hg 1:2-4) and thereby have committed idolatry. "The worship of infamous idols is the reason and source and extremity of all evil" (Wis 14:27). When we go after empty idols, we become empty ourselves (Jer 2:5).

If you want to become fulfilled rather than empty, deny your very self (Lk 9:23) and give your life to Jesus, in Whom absolute fullness resides (Col 1:19). Hunger and thirst for righteousness, and you will be filled (Mt 5:6). Seek first God's kingdom, not yours, "and all these things will be given you besides" (Mt 6:33). "Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:5). Then, in response to your obedience, Jesus will fill you with the choice wine (Jn 2:10) of the Spirit (Acts 2:4). Jesus emptied Himself (Phil 2:7) to give us life to the full (Jn 10:10). Give your life to Him.

Prayer: Father, I empty myself for love of You. Fill me.

Promise: "The Lord loves His people, and He adorns the lowly with victory." -Ps 149:4

Praise: St. Lawrence and his companions spread the gospel to the Philippines, Formosa, and Japan.

THE SIMPLICITY OF HIS POWER - One Bread, One Body, 9/27/2017

Wednesday, September 27, 2017, St. Vincent de Paul

Ezra 9:5-9, Tobit 13:2-4, 7-8, Luke 9:1-6
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092717.cfm

THE SIMPLICITY OF HIS POWER

He "gave them power." -Luke 9:1

When Jesus sent out His twelve apostles, He "gave them power and authority to overcome all demons and to cure diseases" (Lk 9:1). Moreover, He did not allow them to take walking staff, traveling bag, bread, money, and extra clothes (Lk 9:3). Jesus made it clear that power and simplicity were essential to His mission.

Worldly power is often complex. For example, armies, weapons, politics, and the media all are powerful and very complicated. In contrast, power in Christ is often simple. Power in Christ is often based on having less rather than more. Accordingly, the most powerful act in the history of the human race is Jesus' death and Resurrection. Jesus did this by emptying Himself (Phil 2:7). Jesus lived in poverty (see Lk 9:58) and died having nothing. In weakness God's power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). "Because of this, God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name above every other name" (Phil 2:9).

Will you let the Lord make you poor and simple enough to be powerful? Will you believe in the simplicity of His power?

Prayer: Father, give me the courage to radically simplify my life.

Promise: "Thus He has given us new life to raise again the house of our God and restore its ruins, and has granted us a fence in Judah and Jerusalem." -Ezr 9:9

Praise: Like St. Patrick, St. Vincent was kidnapped and enslaved, but was miraculously freed by the mercy of God.

CROWDED - One Bread, One Body, 9/26/2017

Tuesday, September 26, 2017, Sts. Cosmas & Damian

Ezra 6:7-8, 12, 14-20, Psalm 122:1-5, Luke 8:19-21
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092617.cfm

CROWDED

"His mother and brothers came to be with Him, but they could not reach Him because of the crowd." -Luke 8:19

How many of us are crowded? Our lives, minds, and schedules are crowded. We have so many demands pressing in on us. We can hardly breathe. We feel crowded out from Jesus. We can't seem to reach Him. We feel on the outside looking in (Lk 8:20).

What can we do before we're crushed by the crowd? We can obey Jesus, hear God's Word, act upon it (Lk 8:21), and give our lives, minds, and schedules to the Lord. Jesus never gives us more than we have time for. He never overextends us, although sometimes we know this only by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7). "There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens" (Eccl 3:1). Jesus gives us sufficient strength (Phil 4:13) for what He has called us to do.

Jesus promises: "Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you. Take My yoke upon your shoulders and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. Your souls will find rest" (Mt 11:28-29). Rather than the crowd keeping us from Jesus, He keeps us from the crowd of worldly confusion.

Prayer: Jesus, may my personal relationship with You keep me from being crowded.

Promise: "The elders of the Jews continued to make progress in the building, supported by the message of the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah." -Ezr 6:14

Praise: Sts. Cosmas & Damian welcomed God's little ones by providing free medical care to those in need. They were martyred for the faith in Syria.

DESPITE FAILURES - One Bread, One Body, 9/25/2017

Ezra 1:1-6, Psalm 126:1-6, Luke 8:16-18
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092517.cfm

DESPITE FAILURES

"He puts it on a lampstand so that whoever comes in can see it." -Luke 8:16

Jesus said there were four groups of people in this world. He compared these groups to a footpath, rocky ground, ground that produces briers, and good ground (Lk 8:5ff). Only one of the four groups receives God's Word so as to bear fruit. This means that we who share God's Word can expect a lot of failure. This makes us feel like keeping God's Word to ourselves. Nevertheless, the Lord commands us to put the light of God's Word on the lampstand of our lives so as to give light to all (Lk 8:16).

The Lord also warns us that if we don't share His Word, we will lose it (Lk 8:18). If we hear and act on His Word by sharing it, Jesus promises He will consider us to be His mother, brothers, and sisters (Lk 8:21; Mk 3:35). The Lord gives us encouragement to share His Word despite the failure of many to accept it.

Do you love the Lord? Do you love people? Do you know that every person needs to believe in Jesus Christ? Do you also know that "ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ"? (St. Jerome, Catechism, 133) People need to hear the Word of the Lord to believe in the Lord. For God's sake and for love's sake, share His Word.

Prayer: Father, may love impel me to share Your Word under any circumstances (2 Cor 5:14).

Promise: "Everyone...whom God had inspired to do so...prepared to go up to build the house of the Lord." -Ezr 1:5

Praise: Chuck and Lisa have led hundreds of young people to Jesus.

(Bear fruit a hundredfold by having a ministry of the Word. For encouragement, order our tapes on the "Bible Teachers Series". Our six-tape audio series starts with AV 117-1. Our three-part video series starts with V-117.)

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday NOT FAIR? THANK GOD!
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=9/24/2017

"My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord." -Isaiah 55:8

So often people think or say: "The Lord's way is not fair!" (Ez 18:25) The laborers in the
vineyard who worked all day were saying, in essence, the same thing. Seemingly, God treats
the weak, sinful, marginalized, forgotten ones better than He treats the ones who faithfully
serve Him. While the Lord lovingly pursues the lost, late ones, He goes so far as to leave
the faithful ones seemingly alone "in the wasteland" (Lk 15:4).

As today's first reading reveals, God's ways are not our ways (Is 55:9). All praise and
glory be to God that His ways are not human ways! Praise the Lord that "His ways are not
fair" in the sight of humanity. Human history is littered with the refuse of sin, greed,
injustice, and misery, which are the wages of human ways. The Lord's ways, on the contrary,
are not limited to being "fair." His way is merciful, gracious, slow to anger, of great
kindness (Ex 34:6; Ps 103:8).

God is perfectly just. But, as Pope Emeritus Benedict taught, God's love turns Himself
against His justice (God Is Love, 10). His generosity trumps fairness (see Mt 20:15). Now we
have a choice. We can rejoice in the unbounded mercy and generosity of God. Or, we can
grumble that the Lord is not "fair." Let us "seek the Lord" and His overflowing mercy "while
He may be found" (Is 55:6). Let us learn to be overflowing in love and mercy as He is. Let
us gladly work for Him, and rejoice when He extends His mercy to others.

Prayer: Father, I dedicate my life to making known Your mercy.

Promise: "For, to me, 'life' means Christ." -Phil 1:21

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, risen Truth, Love, Life, and Head of the Church. Alleluia!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

FAITH AND MISSION

GATHER AROUND JESUS

... World Mission Day gathers us around ... Jesus, "the very first and greatest evangelizer"
(Paul VI ...) who continually sends us forth to proclaim the Gospel of the love of God the
Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. This Day invites us to reflect anew on the mission at
the heart of the Christian faith.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

... It is important to ask ourselves certain questions about our Christian identity and our
responsibility as believers in a world marked by confusion, disappointment and frustration,
and torn by numerous fratricidal wars that unjustly target the innocent. What is the basis
of our mission? What is the heart of our mission? What are the essential approaches we need
to take in carrying out our mission?

TRANSFORMING POWER

The Church's mission, directed to all men and women of good will, is based on the
transformative power of the Gospel.

NOT FAIR? THANK GOD! - One Bread, One Body, 9/24/2017

Sunday, September 24, 2017, 25th Sunday Ordinary Time

Isaiah 55:6-9, Philippians 1:20-24, 27, Psalm 145:2-3, 8-9, 17-18, Matthew 20:1-16
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092417.cfm

NOT FAIR? THANK GOD!

"My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord." -Isaiah 55:8

So often people think or say: "The Lord's way is not fair!" (Ez 18:25) The laborers in the vineyard who worked all day were saying, in essence, the same thing. Seemingly, God treats the weak, sinful, marginalized, forgotten ones better than He treats the ones who faithfully serve Him. While the Lord lovingly pursues the lost, late ones, He goes so far as to leave the faithful ones seemingly alone "in the wasteland" (Lk 15:4).

As today's first reading reveals, God's ways are not our ways (Is 55:9). All praise and glory be to God that His ways are not human ways! Praise the Lord that "His ways are not fair" in the sight of humanity. Human history is littered with the refuse of sin, greed, injustice, and misery, which are the wages of human ways. The Lord's ways, on the contrary, are not limited to being "fair." His way is merciful, gracious, slow to anger, of great kindness (Ex 34:6; Ps 103:8).

God is perfectly just. But, as Pope Emeritus Benedict taught, God's love turns Himself against His justice (God Is Love, 10). His generosity trumps fairness (see Mt 20:15). Now we have a choice. We can rejoice in the unbounded mercy and generosity of God. Or, we can grumble that the Lord is not "fair." Let us "seek the Lord" and His overflowing mercy "while He may be found" (Is 55:6). Let us learn to be overflowing in love and mercy as He is. Let us gladly work for Him, and rejoice when He extends His mercy to others.

Prayer: Father, I dedicate my life to making known Your mercy.

Promise: "For, to me, 'life' means Christ." -Phil 1:21

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, risen Truth, Love, Life, and Head of the Church. Alleluia!

BROKEN FOR THE HARVEST - One Bread, One Body, 9/23/2017

Saturday, September 23, 2017, St. Pio of Pietrelcina

1 Timothy 6:13-16, Psalm 100:1-5, Luke 8:4-15
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092317.cfm

BROKEN FOR THE HARVEST

"The seed on good ground..." -Luke 8:15

The best soil for a good harvest is newly tilled soil. What does that soil look like to a gardener? The soil is completely turned upside-down. It is broken-up into clods. It is not at all smooth. Yet such soil is optimal for making seeds sprout and grow.

Have you ever had a broken heart and felt like your life was turned upside-down, inside-out, and worked over? Even now, are you in constant pain, with your life as one big upheaval? Then to Jesus, the Gardener (see Jn 20:15), you are a beautiful sight to behold. You are just like the good soil that has been tilled and worked over, ready for planting.

Right now, decide to offer your upside-down heart and your life full of upheavals to Jesus. You might feel that you are so wounded as to be useless, that your life is too big of a mess to ever be set right. Jesus, however, looks at you and sees the potential for a miraculous, abundant harvest. In your brokenness, you are in prime position to be the best soil, if you offer yourself to the Lord as good seedground. Allow Him to use you for the good of His kingdom. He will fertilize, nourish, and water you, caring for you with gentle love. He can use your mixed-up, broken-hearted life to bear great fruit. All you need is to not harden your heart and thereby become the worst soil (see Lk 8:12). Be willing to offer your brokenness for His harvest.

Prayer: Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours. May nothing in my life go to waste. Redeem many through my pain.

Promise: "[Jesus] is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, Who alone has immortality and Who dwells in unapproachable light." -1 Tm 6:15-16

Praise: St. Pio's zeal for the Holy Eucharist held him in rapture as he celebrated Mass.

THE PRIVILEGE AND COST OF DISCIPLESHIP - One Bread, One Body, 9/22/2017

Friday, September 22, 2017

1 Timothy 6:2-12, Psalm 49:6-10, 17-20, Luke 8:1-3
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092217.cfm

THE PRIVILEGE AND COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

"The Twelve accompanied Him, and also some women..." -Luke 8:1-2

When we were baptized, we became disciples of Jesus. Disciples accompany Jesus. They help preach and proclaim "the good news of the kingdom of God" (Lk 8:1). Because Jesus' disciples have "been cured of evil spirits and maladies" (Lk 8:2), they are eager to use their authority and power from Jesus to heal and free others (see Mt 10:1). Disciples also assist the leaders of the Church out of their means (Lk 8:3). They do not love money; rather, they express their love for God by giving Him their money and themselves (see 1 Tm 6:10). Jesus' disciples flee from the ways of the world (1 Tm 6:11). They "seek after integrity, piety, faith, love, steadfastness, and a gentle spirit" (1 Tm 6:11). They "fight the good fight of faith" (1 Tm 6:12) and "take firm hold on the everlasting life to which" they "were called" (1 Tm 6:12).

To live as disciples of Jesus, we must deny our very selves, take up our cross each day, and follow in His steps (Lk 9:23). To be disciples of Jesus, we must put Jesus in a class by Himself and love Him so supremely and uniquely that by comparison we seem to hate everyone else - even our families and ourselves (Lk 14:26). To be disciples of Jesus, we must renounce all our possessions (Lk 14:33).

Make the greatest decision of your life. Decide to live your Baptism and live as a disciple of Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for the privilege of being Your disciple and following You even to the cross.

Promise: "Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and a trap. They are letting themselves be captured by foolish and harmful desires which drag men down to ruin and destruction. The love of money is the root of all evil." -1 Tm 6:9-10

Praise: When in need of money, Joseph trusted in God and the money came unexpectedly through his cousin.

SUPPER TIME

"Matthew got up and followed Him. Now it happened that, while Jesus was at table in Matthew's home, many tax collectors and those known as sinners came to join Jesus and His disciples at dinner." -Matthew 9:9-10

After Matthew decided to leave his job and follow Jesus, he had Jesus over for supper (Mt 9:9-10). We too need to have supper with Jesus after our conversion. In fact, we need to have supper with Jesus frequently, even daily. At this supper, Jesus will work miracles. He will change bread and wine into His Body and Blood. This makes it possible for us to receive into our bodies the Body and Blood of Jesus. In this way, we have an unimaginable intimacy and communion with the Lord. We are in Him and He in us (Jn 6:56).

This communion with the Lord becomes the source, center, and goal of our lives. When Jesus returns at the end of the world, He will have supper with those in communion with Him (see Lk 12:37) and take them to His everlasting wedding banquet in heaven. "Happy are they who have been invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb" (Rv 19:9).

Right now, Jesus is talking to you as He talked to Matthew. Jesus says: "Here I stand, knocking at the door. If anyone hears Me calling and opens the door, I will enter his house and have supper with him, and he with Me" (Rv 3:20). Open the door; give your life totally to Jesus; have supper with Jesus; be in daily, intimate Communion with God.

Prayer: Father, may everyone reading One Bread, One Body want to be a daily communicant.

Promise: "Live a life worthy of the calling you have received, with perfect humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another lovingly." -Eph 4:1-2

Praise: St. Matthew, once a greedy tax collector, left his job to follow Jesus. He then wrote: "How blest are the poor in Spirit, the reign of God is theirs" (Mt 5:3).

THE KEY TO TRUE FREEDOM - One Bread, One Body, 9/20/2017

"Faith and Mission" is the title of the latest issue of Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth.
--> http://www.presentationministries.com/pope/latest.asp

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth is designed as a bulletin insert which you can use at your local church to keep up to date on what the Holy Father is saying. You are free to reproduce it for this purpose.

1 Timothy 3:14-16, Psalm 111:1-6, Luke 7:31-35
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092017.cfm

THE KEY TO TRUE FREEDOM

"I am writing you about these matters so that if I should be delayed you will know what kind of conduct befits a member of God's household, the Church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of truth." -1 Timothy 3:14-15

Human beings cannot help but be under authority. If we are not under the authority of God, we may be under the authority of Satan - even if we think we are "doing our own thing" (as if we had an "own thing"). If we are not under the authority of God's Church, "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15), we are under some other authority. This alternate authority might consist of certain powerful multimillionaires, celebrities, politicians, or social scientists - proponents of «freedoms» thinly disguised as totalitarian dictatorships - who are like children manipulating, controlling, and oppressing their playmates (see Lk 7:32ff). There can be no such thing as freedom from authority. There is freedom only under the authority of Christ and His Church. Any other so-called freedom is merely a thinly disguised totalitarian dictatorship.

Because the Truth sets us free (Jn 8:32) and the Church is "the pillar and bulwark of truth," the key to true freedom is submission to the authority of Jesus through the Church. The Church protects us from slavery combined with deception, especially self-deception.

Love authority in Christ. Love truth so as to love freedom. Love the Church as Christ loved the Church (Eph 5:25).

Prayer: Father, give me freedom in Your authority, Your Church, and Your truth.

Promise: "Wonderful, indeed, is the mystery of our faith." -1 Tm 3:16

Praise: St. Andrew was a Korean priest and St. Paul was a catechist in training at the age of twenty-five. They, along with numerous companions, were martyred in 1867.

THE HOLY ORDERS - One Bread, One Body, 9/18/2017

Monday, September 18, 2017

1 Timothy 2:1-8, Psalm 28:2, 7-9, Luke 7:1-10
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/091817.cfm

THE HOLY ORDERS

"I too am a man who knows the meaning of an order." -Luke 7:8

Jesus is Lord! A lord gives orders. The way to please a lord is to ask for an order. For example, the centurion sent the message to Lord Jesus: "Just give the order and my servant will be cured" (Lk 7:7). This man understood what it meant to be a lord and have authority over others. He understood Jesus.

We also should seek orders from Jesus, our Lord, the Lord of lords. We should read the Bible looking for an order to obey immediately. When we pray, we must not give the Lord orders but sit at His feet, listening to His words (Lk 10:39). We should constantly say: "Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening" (1 Sm 3:9). Also, the Lord wants us even to delight in obeying our parents, husbands, pastors, employers, and leaders. In this way, we show our delight in His lordship.

We love Jesus' orders even more than His promises. We delight in the law of the Lord (Ps 1:2). Jesus' lordship is not merely a title but our way of life. It is our joy to submit to and serve the Lord. Alleluia! Jesus is Lord! (see Phil 2:11)

Prayer: Jesus, may I live to do Your will, not mine.

Promise: "First of all, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all men, especially for kings and those in authority, that we may be able to lead undisturbed and tranquil lives in perfect piety and dignity. Prayer of this kind is good." -1 Tm 2:1-3

Praise: Elizabeth has been faithful to her Bible Study for over a decade.

PM eNewsletter 24th Sunday in ordinary time

September 17th 24th Sunday in ordinary time.

Oh Jesus, this week we see the wonder of Your call and the effect of Your word.

You told Matthew to follow You, and he left everything and did just that.

Jesus, please continue to call us as You did through our parents to become Your
children through baptism.

And now Jesus, as adults let us all hear Your call again, and be willing to give up
any earthly pursuit and come and follow You.

Let Your presence in the eucharist be our guiding light and focus to worship You in
all of our endeavors in life.

Let our life, and life's work give You honor, and praise, and let others see in us
the Christ that guides us to everlasting life.

Jesus, let us be as the apostles became, totally Yours.

Thank you Jesus, for the gift of faith.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday FALSE FORGIVENESS
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=9/17/2017

"My heavenly Father will treat you in exactly the same way unless each of you forgives his
brother from his heart." -Matthew 18:35

Many Christians don't forgive others because they have been deceived into thinking they have
already forgiven. This deception about forgiveness results in our being handed over to the
torturers (Mt 18:34) and not being forgiven ourselves (Mt 6:12). Therefore, we are doomed if
we are deceived about having forgiven.

One of the best indicators of false forgiveness is anger. Before and after the writer of
Sirach commands us to forgive (Sir 28:2), he teaches us that "wrath and anger are hateful
things" (Sir 27:30) and that anger prevents us from being healed (Sir 28:3, 5). We may not
even feel angry with the persons who have hurt us, yet anger in any area may be an indication
of unforgiveness toward someone.

Another indication of false forgiveness is not being very aware of the impossibility of human
beings forgiving. The old saying is absolutely true: "To err is human; to forgive is divine."
We cannot forgive; only God can forgive. Humanly speaking, we have a bear-hug on anger and
unforgiveness (see Sir 27:30). We will never break this hold by our own power. By the Lord's
power, however, we can forgive everyone for everything.

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any false forgiveness in your life. Ask the Spirit to pour out
His love in your heart (Rm 5:5) so you have His power to forgive.

Prayer: Father, may forgiveness mean for me what it means for You.

Promise: "None of us lives as his own master and none of us dies as his own master. While we
live we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die we die as His servants." -Rm 14:7-8

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, our Peace! (Eph 2:14)

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

WORLD DAY OF THE POOR

LEARN FROM THE POOR

... Let us welcome them as honored guests at our table; they can be teachers who help us to
live the faith more consistently. With their trust and readiness to receive help, they show
us in a quiet and joyful way, how essential it is to live simply and to abandon ourselves to
God's providence.

PRAYER OF THE POOR

Let us not forget that the Our Father is the prayer of the poor. Our asking for bread expresses
our entrustment to God for our basic needs in life. Everything that Jesus taught us in this
prayer expresses and brings together the cry of all who suffer from life's uncertainties and
the lack of what they need.

"POWERFUL APPEAL"

This ... Day ... should become a powerful appeal to our consciences as believers, allowing us
to grow in the conviction that sharing with the poor enables us to understand the deepest truth
of the Gospel. The poor are not a problem: they are a resource from which to draw as we strive
to accept and practice in our lives the essence of the Gospel.

FALSE FORGIVENESS - One Bread, One Body, 9/17/2017

Sunday, September 17, 2017, 24th Sunday Ordinary Time

Sirach 27:30-28:9, Romans 14:7-9, Psalm 103:1-4, 9-12, Matthew 18:21-35
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/091717.cfm

FALSE FORGIVENESS

"My heavenly Father will treat you in exactly the same way unless each of you forgives his brother from his heart." -Matthew 18:35

Many Christians don't forgive others because they have been deceived into thinking they have already forgiven. This deception about forgiveness results in our being handed over to the torturers (Mt 18:34) and not being forgiven ourselves (Mt 6:12). Therefore, we are doomed if we are deceived about having forgiven.

One of the best indicators of false forgiveness is anger. Before and after the writer of Sirach commands us to forgive (Sir 28:2), he teaches us that "wrath and anger are hateful things" (Sir 27:30) and that anger prevents us from being healed (Sir 28:3, 5). We may not even feel angry with the persons who have hurt us, yet anger in any area may be an indication of unforgiveness toward someone.

Another indication of false forgiveness is not being very aware of the impossibility of human beings forgiving. The old saying is absolutely true: "To err is human; to forgive is divine." We cannot forgive; only God can forgive. Humanly speaking, we have a bear-hug on anger and unforgiveness (see Sir 27:30). We will never break this hold by our own power. By the Lord's power, however, we can forgive everyone for everything.

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any false forgiveness in your life. Ask the Spirit to pour out His love in your heart (Rm 5:5) so you have His power to forgive.

Prayer: Father, may forgiveness mean for me what it means for You.

Promise: "None of us lives as his own master and none of us dies as his own master. While we live we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die we die as His servants." -Rm 14:7-8

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, our Peace! (Eph 2:14)

THE FUTURE FLOODS - One Bread, One Body, 9/16/2017

Saturday, September 16, 2017, Pope St. Cornelius, St. Cyprian

1 Timothy 1:15-17, Psalm 113:1-7, Luke 6:43-49
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/091617.cfm

THE FUTURE FLOODS

"He may be likened to the man who, in building a house, dug deeply and laid the foundation on a rock." -Luke 6:48

Our lives are like houses which are about to face the tremendous force of floods. Only the houses with solid foundations will stand (Lk 6:48). We are well founded if we hear and do God's Word (Lk 6:47). We must lay no "foundation other than the one that has been laid, namely Jesus Christ" (1 Cor 3:11). We must also be founded on the Body of Christ, the Church, which is founded on the apostles and the prophets (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14).

We build the solid foundation for our lives by giving our lives to Jesus and living our Baptisms fully. We must also be like Jesus and love the Church so much that we give up our lives for her (Eph 5:25). To have a solid foundation, we must know what the bishops, the successors of the apostles, have taught throughout the world over the centuries. Then we are able to be in submission to their authority. We must listen especially to the Pope (see Mt 16:18), who has a prophetic ministry and who, with the bishops, discerns the authenticity of prophecies.

Foundations are usually built years before floods hit. Build the foundation of your life now. Build it to withstand anything.

Prayer: Father, the rivers are rising, but by Your grace I am not afraid.

Promise: "You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." -1 Tm 1:15

Praise: St. Cornelius was Pope from March 251 until June 253. He was martyred at the same time as his good friend St. Cyprian.

THE MOTHER OF FORGIVENESS - One Bread, One Body, 9/15/2017

Friday, September 15, 2017, Our Lady of Sorrows

Hebrews 5:7-9, Psalm 31:2-6, 15-16, 20, Luke 2:33-35, or John 19:25-27
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/091517.cfm

THE MOTHER OF FORGIVENESS

"Seeing His mother there with the disciple whom He loved, Jesus said to His mother, Woman, there is your son.' " -John 19:26

A few moments before Jesus died, He commanded His mother Mary to adopt all His disciples for all time, who were represented at the cross by a nameless, beloved disciple (Jn 19:26). In effect, Jesus told Mary to adopt those who were accomplices in His brutal death through their sins. Would you have the love, mercy, and forgiveness to adopt someone who helped torture and murder your son?

Moreover, Jesus told Mary to adopt us at the very time when the results of our sins were literally killing Him. Would you adopt your son's murderers at the very hour they were murdering him?

Our Lady of Sorrows is the Mother of Sorrows. The Mother of Sorrows is the mother of those who caused her sorrows. She chose to be the Mother of her Son's murderers, of us who helped kill Him through our sins (Catechism, 598). The Mother of Sorrows and the Mother of her Son's murderers adopted us when we were least adoptable because she is the Mother of Forgiveness.

Mary, our mother and the Mother of Forgiveness, pray for us to be saved, forgiving, and forgiven.

Prayer: Jesus, give me true devotion to Mary, my forgiving mother.

Promise: "Son though He was, He learned obedience from what He suffered; and when perfected, He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." -Heb 5:8-9

Praise: Our Lady of Sorrows, like her Son, was perfected in God's love and mercy in and through her sufferings (Heb 5:8).

Thursday, September 14, 2017, Exaltation of the Cross

CROSS-FIRE

"Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in Him." -John 3:14-15

"When I behold the wondrous cross on which the King of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride." These words from a traditional hymn are my prayer for you today.

May you see in a new way the cross and the One Who hung and died on it for love of you. May the cross be a prophecy which penetrates, divides, and judges the thoughts and reflections of your heart (Heb 4:12). Through the cross, may you be crucified to the world and the world to you (Gal 6:14). May this celebration of the Exaltation of the Cross be the occasion for breakthroughs in the hearts of millions throughout the world and breakdowns of the strongholds of the evil one (see 2 Cor 10:4). Today, may Jesus, Who has been lifted up on the cross, draw all people to Himself (Jn 12:32).

"Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the world adore His sacred name."

Prayer: Father, may my life be accurately described as the triumph of the cross.

Promise: "At Jesus' name every knee must bend in the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth, and every tongue proclaim to the glory of God the Father: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!" -Phil 2:10-11

Praise: When Kevin cannot find the words to pray, he simply gazes upon a crucifix.

(For a related teaching, order our tape "Crucified to the World" on audio AV 40A-3 or video V-40A.)

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

"You must put that aside now…put aside your old self with its past deeds and put on a new man, one who grows in knowledge as he is formed anew in the image of his Creator." -Colossians 3:8, 9-10

Today's Eucharistic readings address two opposite ways of life. St. Paul calls these two ways the "old self" and the "new self" (see Col 3:9-10). The old self is our life without Jesus, ruled by the world, the flesh, and the devil (see 1 Jn 2:16). This old self lives a lifestyle characterized by anger, malice, insults, lying, evil desires, lust (Col 3:5, 8-9), the desires for pleasure and the things of this world (Lk 6:24-26). The new self is shaped entirely by allowing Jesus to form our actions, thoughts, words, and lifestyle. When we live in the new self, we are set free from sin and set free for service, worship, and evangelization.

Those who live according to the new self are blessed; those who live under the old self have nothing to anticipate but woes (see Lk 6:20-26). In Baptism, our old self died with Christ, drowned in the waters of Baptism. Yet our lives after Baptism sometimes seem like a civil war (see Jas 4:1). We want to live a good and holy life for the Lord, yet we sin (see Rm 7:7-25).

The key is to daily live our Baptism. Each time you bless yourselves with holy water, that is, the water of Baptism, renew your baptismal vows. Tell yourself: "I am a baptized child of Almighty God! Lord Jesus, drown my old self with You in this holy water. Help me put on the pure, victorious garments of my new self that lives in You. May I live the new life of blessings and not the old life of woes."

Prayer: Father, "I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me" (Gal 2:19-20).

Promise: "Set your heart on what pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God's right hand." -Col 3:1

Praise: St. John Chrysostom preached the truth even when it was resisted by prominent members of the community.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)
