THE EJECTION OF REJECTION
"He was in the world, and through Him the world was made, yet the world did not know who He was." -John 1:10
Did you feel rejected in 2019? If you did, you're in good company. Jesus was also rejected. "To His own He came, yet His own did not accept Him" (Jn 1:11). What hurts most is that the rejection usually comes from those closest to us. For example, wives and husbands reject each other; parents refuse to forgive their children; sons and daughters rebel and break their parents' hearts. The psalmist cries: "If an enemy had reviled me, I could have borne it; if he who hates me had vaunted himself against me, I might have hidden from him. But you, my other self, my companion and my bosom friend! You, whose comradeship I enjoyed; at whose side I walked in procession in the house of God!" (Ps 55:13-15)
Even in the Church we feel rejected by others. But our pain from rejection is almost nothing compared to humanity's constant rejection of the Lord for thousands of years. "Now many such antichrists have appeared. This makes us certain that it is the final hour. It was from our ranks that they took their leave" (1 Jn 2:18-19). No one has been rejected more than Jesus. He understands your pain.
As we end the old year and begin this new one, do two things: Forgive and give. First, ask for the power to forgive all the rejections of the past. Second, give yourself to Jesus. He promises: "All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me; no one who comes will I ever reject" (Jn 6:37). Let 2020 be the best year of your life.
Prayer: Jesus, don't let me go to sleep tonight without forgiving everyone who has ever hurt and rejected me. I give myself to You. Remind me of this at midnight tonight.
Promise: "But you have the anointing that comes from the Holy One, so that all knowledge is yours." -1 Jn 2:20
Praise: Through the leadership of Pope St. Sylvester, we have received the Nicene Creed.

THE FIRST DETACHMENT?
"Have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords." -1 John 2:15
In traditional Catholic spirituality, we emphasize the virtue of detachment from the world's prideful desires, for "the world with its seductions is passing away but the man who does God's will endures forever" (1 Jn 2:17). Those called to the consecrated life are to be exceptional examples of the detachment from the world which all Christians should have. For example, Anna "was constantly in the temple, worshiping day and night in fasting and prayer" (Lk 2:37).
In traditional Western materialism, we tend to emphasize attachment. Many of us want to possess a lot of "stuff" to the point that we are often possessed by our possessions. We can even put our possessions ahead of Jesus and walk away from Him in our sad possessiveness (Mk 10:22).
Contrary to popular opinion - we cannot serve God and mammon, that is, the things of the world (Mt 6:24), for, "if anyone loves the world, the Father's love has no place in him" (1 Jn 2:15). Tomorrow in the Western world is New Year's Eve. Traditionally in our society, many people give the first hours and the first fruits of the new year to worldly celebrations. What will you do? Will you start the new year attached to the world and detached from God or attached to God and detached from the world?
Prayer: Father, teach me to relate to the world as does Jesus (see 1 Jn 2:6; Jn 17:16).
Promise: "I address you, young men, for you are strong, and the word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the evil one." -1 Jn 2:14
Praise: Juan gave up a successful business career to answer the call to the priesthood.

PM eNewsletter Feast of the Holy Family
December 29th Feast of the Holy family
Jesus, as we end this year, let us see the power of love that exists in the human family that should be
like your Holy Family.
We all have our faults and failings, but they can be given to You, so that we can be free to love those
who gave us life and took care of us as children.
Let us see that our parents did the best they could where they were at.
And let us pray for them to come and find the love that You have for all families.
Jesus, help all children, especially those who had difficult childhoods, and give them the grace to
forgive.
Let this next year be a year of peace and love and forgivness.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday THE ETERNAL FAMILY REUNION
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=12/29/2019
"Christ's peace must reign in your hearts." -Colossians 3:15
We want to celebrate Christmas with our families. Therefore, Christmas is especially difficult for us if
a loved one has died in the last year. However, we have the great hope of our families getting together
for the eternal happiness of heaven. We will have a family reunion in heaven in the not too distant
future, and if the Lord has His way, not one family member will be missing (see Jn 6:39; 1 Tm 2:4).
For your family to stay together for an eternity of Christmases, you must:
1. Repent of sin and decide to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mk 12:30).
2. Talk to your family members about your love for Jesus.
3. Be in right relationship with family members. Honor your parents (Sir 3:2), be submissive to your
husband, lay down your life for your wife (Col 3:18-19), disciple your children.
4. Pray together daily as a married couple and as a family (see Mt 18:19-20).
5. Forgive family members seven times seventy times (Mt 18:22; see Col 3:13).
Many of you feel very discouraged about the spiritual state of your families. Be instead confident that
the Lord loves each member of your family, even to death on the cross. Jesus will change the hardest heart.
Be hopeful.
Prayer: Father, may I remove the plank of sin from my own eye so as to help family members remove the specks
from their eyes (Mt 7:5).
Promise: "Kindness to a father will not be forgotten, it will serve as a sin offering - it will take lasting
root." -Sir 3:14
Praise: We praise You, Father, "from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name" (Eph 3:15).
May your light shine through our family for the world to see.

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
END HUNGER
WE CAN DO IT
We do indeed have the adequate means and framework so that beautiful words and good wishes may become an
action plan of substance that leads effectively to the eradication of hunger in our world. To this end we
need joint efforts, upright hearts, and persistent concern to firmly and resolutely make the other's
problems one's own.
"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"
There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end hunger, and this
ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by all peoples and all religious
persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at the heart of all initiatives and consists in
"doing to another what we would want done to ourselves."
DON'T BE INDIFFERENT
... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT
... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

THE ETERNAL FAMILY REUNION
"Christ's peace must reign in your hearts." -Colossians 3:15
We want to celebrate Christmas with our families. Therefore, Christmas is especially difficult for us if a loved one has died in the last year. However, we have the great hope of our families getting together for the eternal happiness of heaven. We will have a family reunion in heaven in the not too distant future, and if the Lord has His way, not one family member will be missing (see Jn 6:39; 1 Tm 2:4).
For your family to stay together for an eternity of Christmases, you must:
* Repent of sin and decide to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mk 12:30).
* Talk to your family members about your love for Jesus.
* Be in right relationship with family members. Honor your parents (Sir 3:2), be submissive to your husband, lay down your life for your wife (Col 3:18-19), disciple your children.
* Pray together daily as a married couple and as a family (see Mt 18:19-20).
* Forgive family members seven times seventy times (Mt 18:22; see Col 3:13).
Many of you feel very discouraged about the spiritual state of your families. Be instead confident that the Lord loves each member of your family, even to death on the cross. Jesus will change the hardest heart. Be hopeful.
Prayer: Father, may I remove the plank of sin from my own eye so as to help family members remove the specks from their eyes (Mt 7:5).
Promise: "Kindness to a father will not be forgotten, it will serve as a sin offering - it will take lasting root." -Sir 3:14
Praise: We praise You, Father, "from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name" (Eph 3:15). May your light shine through our family for the world to see.

CONFORMED TO CHRIST
Herod "ordered the massacre of all the boys two years old and under in Bethlehem." -Matthew 2:16
Each baby boy killed that morning over two-thousand years ago in Bethlehem died because he was mistaken for Jesus. The soldiers who killed the Holy Innocents in Bethlehem thought they were killing Christ, or someone who could be Jesus. To the killers, the children were indistinguishable from Christ.
The child-martyrs we call the Holy Innocents are thus a model to us. We are to bear the light of Christ in our lives to such an extent that Jesus called us "the light of the world" (Mt 5:14). May our lives be conformed to such an astonishing likeness to Jesus that the world, in a sense, might confuse us for Christ. This makes us a threat to the world just as was Jesus, and so we risk being persecuted. But "blest are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of" Jesus (Mt 5:11).
"I beg you through the mercy of God to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you may judge what is God's will, what is good, pleasing and perfect" (Rm 12:1-2).
Prayer: Father, mold me and fashion me into the image of Jesus.
Promise: "Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth." -Ps 124:8
Praise: Jesus said, "My kingdom does not belong to this world" (Jn 18:36). In retrospect, King Herod should not have been threatened by the Holy Innocents. Thank You, Father, for protecting Jesus, Your Son through these blessed, innocent children.

EYE IN THE SKY
"He saw and believed." -John 20:8
Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. John the Evangelist. John is the author of the fourth Gospel, three letters in the New Testament, and the Book of Revelation. He is one of the twelve apostles and remained with Jesus at the foot of the cross as He was crucified. God blessed St. John with a special gift-a heavenly perspective on the plan of salvation. His Gospel especially emphasizes the divinity of Christ.
I find the following image helpful when explaining the divine viewpoint of St. John's Gospel. Picture Jesus standing in the center of a room with three doors. He is facing one door, and there are doors to His right and His left. Imagine St. Matthew standing in the door to Jesus' left, St. Mark in the doorway facing Jesus, and St. Luke in the doorway to His right. Each of these three evangelists faithfully portray Jesus from their particular vantage point. They each see a unique perspective of Jesus, and describe Jesus a bit differently from the other evangelists. Picture St. John, however, gazing down upon the Lord from a skylight in the roof. John has the divine perspective in mind throughout His Gospel.
All four evangelists are describing the same Jesus, but from a different perspective. Thus, different aspects of Jesus emerge in each Gospel. St. John looks at Jesus from the heavenly perspective of the Father. Much of John's Gospel describes Jesus' relationship with His Father. He was sent from the Father (Jn 5:36) and lives in the Father (Jn 10:38). I challenge you to read the Gospel of John during the Christmas season. Keep St. John's heavenly perspective in mind. Believe that Jesus and the Father are one (Jn 10:30).
Prayer: "My Lord and my God!" (Jn 20:28)
Promise: "We speak of the Word of Life." -1 Jn 1:1
Praise: "I have written this to you to make you realize that you possess eternal life-you who believe in the name of the Son of God" (1 Jn 5:13). Thank you, Lord, for the ministry of St. John the Evangelist.

PURIFIED, PRAISING PRIESTS - One Bread, One Body, 12/23/2019
Monday, December 23, 2019, St. John of Kanty

PURIFIED, PRAISING PRIESTS
"He will purify the sons of Levi." -Malachi 3:3
Two days before Christmas, the Church reads to us from Malachi the prophet. Malachi prophesied to priests, calling them to greater holiness and leadership in worship and instruction (Mal 1:6; 2:1, 6-7). Malachi foretells that priests, that is, "the sons of Levi," will be refined in fire "like gold or like silver that they may offer due sacrifice to the Lord" (Mal 3:3).
Zechariah was a priest (Lk 1:5). He was struck mute because of his disbelief in God's Good News to him (Lk 1:20). When Zechariah the priest obeyed God's prophecy, his mouth was opened and he began to praise God (Lk 1:63-64). This purified, praising priest had a great impact on all who saw him, as they all reverenced God (Lk 1:65-66).
Though ordained priests are called to purification and greatness before Christmas, religious and lay Christians, including parents, are not off the hook. Parents share a baptismal priesthood (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1546; 1 Pt 2:5, 9) and are in that sense "priests" of their domestic church, their home (see Catechism, 1666). God is purifying all baptized Christians. All are called to submit to God's purification and open their mouths to proclaim God's praise (Ps 51:17).
Ordained and baptismal priests, let God purify you right now, even if it's painful and inconvenient. These last two days before Christmas are perhaps the busiest time for a priest, but purification and praise are high on God's Christmas list.
Prayer: Father, I surrender my Christmas plans to You. Use me any way You will so that many will glorify You this Christmas.
Promise: "Suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord Whom you seek." -Mal 3:1
Praise: "O Emmanuel, King and Lawgiver, Desire of the nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord our God."

PM eNewsletter 4th Sunday of Advent
December 22nd Fourth Sunday of Advent
Oh! Christ, You are about to come again as the babe in the manger.
Please help us to realize that You, as a baby, are all loving and all forgiving.
That all of our sins can and should be washed away, so that this year we can end on a note of praise and
peace.
We can never truly have peace unless we are truly washed clean in Your Blood.
Jesus, thank You so much for Your becoming like us in everything but sin.
Let us be excited that You love us so much that You died that we might have eternal life.
Let us, this joyous season, lift our voices in praise and glory to You.
Let us be freed from the bondage of sin and soar like the angels in loving You.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday "THE BEST LAID PLANS OF MICE AND MEN"
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=12/22/2019
"When Joseph awoke he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him." -Matthew 1:24
Many of you have Christmas planned. You're going to go to certain parties, see certain family members and
friends, and give specific presents. You expect to receive a few presents yourself along with some Christmas
goodies. The Christmas you have planned is about the same as last year's Christmas, with a few minor
variations.
What if Jesus decided to change your Christmas plans dramatically? Would you let Him be Lord of your
Christmas? Ahaz had plans about how to avoid destruction by the Assyrians. Just when Ahaz had his plans
all set, Isaiah told Ahaz to forget his plans and trust in God alone. The Lord even promised a dramatic
sign to prove Isaiah's message (Is 7:11). Ahaz refused to ask for the sign, would not even consider
changing his plans, and "proved utterly faithless to the Lord" (2 Chr 28:19).
Joseph planned to quietly divorce Mary because she was pregnant and the baby was not his (Mt 1:19). An angel
appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to change his plans. He changed his plans and became the
foster-father of Jesus, the husband of Mary, and head of the Holy Family.
The best Christmases are not when we get our way, but when we change our plans so that Jesus gets His way.
Prayer: Father, ruin any plans of mine that are not Yours.
Promise: " 'The virgin shall be with Child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call Him Emmanuel,' a name
which means 'God is with us.' " -Mt 1:23
Praise: "O King of all the nations, the only Joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man,
come and save the creature You fashioned from the dust."

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
END HUNGER
"HOPES OF MILLIONS"
The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that great
number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and yet
recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.
"EFFECTIVE HELP"
The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.
"WE MUST DO BETTER"
We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to concrete
action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

"THE BEST LAID PLANS OF MICE AND MEN"
"When Joseph awoke he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him." -Matthew 1:24
Many of you have Christmas planned. You're going to go to certain parties, see certain family members and friends, and give specific presents. You expect to receive a few presents yourself along with some Christmas goodies. The Christmas you have planned is about the same as last year's Christmas, with a few minor variations.
What if Jesus decided to change your Christmas plans dramatically? Would you let Him be Lord of your Christmas? Ahaz had plans about how to avoid destruction by the Assyrians. Just when Ahaz had his plans all set, Isaiah told Ahaz to forget his plans and trust in God alone. The Lord even promised a dramatic sign to prove Isaiah's message (Is 7:11). Ahaz refused to ask for the sign, would not even consider changing his plans, and "proved utterly faithless to the Lord" (2 Chr 28:19).
Joseph planned to quietly divorce Mary because she was pregnant and the baby was not his (Mt 1:19). An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to change his plans. He changed his plans and became the foster-father of Jesus, the husband of Mary, and head of the Holy Family.
The best Christmases are not when we get our way, but when we change our plans so that Jesus gets His way.
Prayer: Father, ruin any plans of mine that are not Yours.
Promise: " 'The virgin shall be with Child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call Him Emmanuel,' a name which means 'God is with us.' " -Mt 1:23
Praise: "O King of all the nations, the only Joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature You fashioned from the dust."

SALUTATIONS AND VISITATIONS - One Bread, One Body, 12/21/2019
Saturday, December 21, 2019, St. Peter Canisius
Song of Songs 2:8-14 or, Zephaniah 3:14-18, Psalm 33:2-3, 11-12, 20-21, Luke 1:39-45

SALUTATIONS AND VISITATIONS
"Hark! my lover - here he comes springing across the mountains, leaping across the hills." -Song of Songs 2:8
At the very beginning of her pregnancy, Mary visited Elizabeth. "When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out in a loud voice: 'Blest are you among women and blest is the Fruit of your womb. But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?' " (Lk 1:41-43) Both Elizabeth and John responded to Jesus' presence and Mary's visitation with praise in the Holy Spirit.
At the very end of Mary's pregnancy, she and Joseph visited an inn to find a place to have their Baby. The innkeeper responded to Jesus' presence and the holy family's plight with rejection (Lk 2:7). His inn and his heart had no room for the God-made-man.
The Lord continues to visit His people. He continues to be accepted by some and rejected by others. "He was in the world, and through Him the world was made, yet the world did not know Who He was. To His own He came, yet His own did not accept Him. Any who did accept Him He empowered to become children of God" (Jn 1:10-12). If we can be like Elizabeth and John in accepting Jesus, we can be like Mary in carrying and giving Him to the world.
Prayer: Jesus, may I become so sensitive to Your presence that even a greeting or a word would stir up the Holy Spirit in me. Give me the Holy Spirit of Christmas.
Promise: "Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged! The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty Savior." -Zep 3:16-17
Praise: "O Radiant Dawn, Splendor of eternal light, Sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death."

THE TIME IS FULFILLED - One Bread, One Body, 12/20/2019

THE TIME IS FULFILLED
"Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you." -Luke 1:28
Rejoice unto the Lord for the time is fulfilled, the time long awaited by King David when his throne would be established forever (2 Sm 7:16); the time awaited by St. Paul when God's mystery, kept hidden for hundreds of years, would be revealed (Rm 16:25); the time awaited by God's people and fulfilled in Mary when she conceived by the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:35). What joyous expectations have been fulfilled in the birth of Jesus!
So often we seek joy, peace and comfort in unusual places - corrupt society, decadent living, material security, envious activity, or jealous possessiveness. Mary found joy in allowing God's Word to be done unto her (Lk 1:38). David found joy in listening to the prophet Nathan and doing God's will (2 Sm 7:17ff). Paul found joy in the wisdom of God (Rm 16:27). Can we do less than they? Joy is found in service and obedience - not primarily to humankind, but above all to God and His Son Jesus Christ. If we serve Jesus, we must necessarily serve our fellows. If we merely serve our fellows, we may not be serving Jesus.
As Christmas quickly approaches, we must have the joy of the shepherds in our hearts (Lk 2:10) for we know the time is now fulfilled - the time for Jesus to give us true joy and true peace, the time to preach His name to all people, the time to be an evangelist for His sake.
Prayer: "This is the time of fulfillment. The reign of God is at hand! Reform your lives and believe in the gospel!" (Mk 1:15)
Promise: "The virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Immanuel." -Is 7:14
Praise: "O Key of David, O royal power of Israel controlling at Your will the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead Your captive people into freedom."

FORGOTTEN PRAYER? - One Bread, One Body, 12/19/2019

FORGOTTEN PRAYER?
"Do not be frightened, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard." -Luke 1:13
St. Luke's gospel text gives us several clues to Zechariah's background. Zechariah and Elizabeth were advancing in age. Elizabeth was past the age of bearing children (Lk 1:18, 36). Apparently, some years before, Zechariah had prayed for children; hence, the angel says: "Your prayer has been heard" (Lk 1:13). Zechariah's startled and skeptical reaction indicates that he probably had forgotten about this prayer and perhaps hadn't prayed for a child in quite a few years.
Sometimes we Christians assume that prayer has a kind of spiritual statute of limitations; that if God hasn't answered our prayers in what seems to us a "reasonable" amount of time, then He has forgotten our prayer and therefore the prayer no longer is valid. However, the angel tells Zechariah, "Your prayer has been heard" (Lk 1:13). As the angel says: "They will all come true in due season" (Lk 1:20).
Have you prayed for something for a time, then stopped praying because it seemed to you that God wasn't listening? Take the angel's advice: "Silence ... in the presence of the Lord!" (Zec 2:17) Be still and know that He is God (see Ps 46:10, JB).
Prayer: Pray to the Father a seemingly unanswered prayer which you haven't prayed for years.
Promise: "In these days the Lord is acting on my behalf." -Lk 1:25
Praise: "O Flower of Jesse's stem, You have been raised up as a Sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in Your presence; the nations bow down in worship before You. Come, let nothing keep You from coming to our aid."
(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.) (Is your family ready for Christmas? Order, view or download our leaflet, "Healing the Family Tree," on our website.)

FOSTERING
"Joseph...did as the angel of the Lord had directed him." -Matthew 1:24
St. Joseph was a foster-father. He was not the biological father of Jesus, but he raised Jesus from birth with all the love and faithfulness as would a biological father. It can also be said that St. Joseph was a foster-husband. Mary's spouse was the Holy Spirit. She conceived Jesus by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit (Mt 1:18). The Church teaches that Mary was a perpetual virgin, devoted to her Spouse, the Holy Spirit (Catechism, 723). St. Joseph thus did not have a conjugal relationship with Mary, yet served her faithfully as her husband with all the devotion and holy protection as would any husband.
Mary certainly didn't consider Joseph a substitute husband or father. When she and Joseph found the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple, her words were "Your father and I," and "why have you done this to us?" (Lk 2:48) Mary followed Joseph's decisions with full confidence in his ability to hear the Lord.
God did not consider Joseph a substitute father or husband. The Lord entrusted him with the responsibility and honor of naming Jesus (Mt 1:25). God gave dreams and visions to Joseph. It was his ability to hear the Lord that God relied upon in giving him the orders to flee to Egypt and later return to Israel (Mt 2:13, 19-23). Jesus received His lineage as a royal Son of David through Joseph's standing in the tribe of Judah (Mt 1:16). Joseph may have been a foster-father and foster-husband, but God used him to father Jesus, our Savior, Redeemer, and Messiah. Thanks be to God for St. Joseph.
Prayer: Father, may St. Joseph foster many holy vocations to the priesthood, religious life, holy married and lay single life.
Promise: "The lives of the poor He shall save." -Ps 72:13
Praise: "O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, Who showed Yourself to Moses in the burning bush, Who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: Come, stretch out Your mighty hand to set us free."
(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

"Listen to Israel, your father." -Genesis 49:2
When a young man falls in love and gets serious about a young woman, the time soon comes to bring her home to meet his family. Often this is a time of some anxiety. His worst fear might be: I'm afraid she'll leave me because she doesn't like my folks.
Jesus is the Groom (Mk 2:19) and we are the prospective bride. In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus introduces His ancestors before we get serious about our relationship with Him. It's as if He is saying that we won't be able to love Him unless we also love His family.
Imagine Jesus bringing you home to introduce you to His ancestors: "Come in! First, I'd like you to meet Jacob (Mt 1:2), a master deceiver (Gn 27:5ff). Next, I want you to meet Judah and Tamar (Mt 1:3). They aren't married, and conceived their son through prostitution (Gn 38:18). In this room, I'd like you to meet another prostitute, Rahab (Mt 1:5; Jos 2:1). Now here's a wonderful lady, Ruth (Mt 1:5). We had to go outside of the immediate family to find a worthy one like her (Ru 1:4). Over here is one of my favorites, David (Mt 1:6), a man after My Father's heart. Well, he did have a child through adultery with Bathsheba (2 Sm 11:4), and he did kill her husband Uriah and many others. Meet Solomon (Mt 1:7), the wise one of My family. He set a world record for lust, and his son Rehoboam (Mt 1:7) caused a civil war (1 Kgs 11:4; 12:13ff). Did you get to meet Manasseh? (Mt 1:10) He'd fit right in with today's 'culture of death' (see 2 Kgs 21:16)..."
Will you decide to walk out on Jesus? Or do you love Him enough to stay and love those He loves (1 Jn 4:20-21)? Stay with Jesus, and then He will adopt you into His family (Mk 3:34-35).
Prayer: Father, I love all of Your children, the family You have redeemed through my older Brother Jesus.
Promise: "Justice shall flower in His days." -Ps 72:7
Praise: "O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, You govern all creation with Your strong yet tender care. Come and show Your people the way to salvation."

A DESCENDING SPIRAL - One Bread, One Body, 12/16/2019

A DESCENDING SPIRAL
"Then why did you not put faith in it?" -Matthew 21:25
Many of the chief priests and elders did not believe in John's baptism. Thus, they were not prepared to accept Jesus. So they crucified Him.
Many people are so ignorant of history or disobedient to God that they do not take Advent seriously. Thus, they are not prepared to meet Christ at Christmastime. So they miss out on Christmas.
When Christmas is a far cry from what the Lord wants it to be, many do not realize that "the trouble is in their set," that is, they do not have God's mindset about Christmas. Rather, they think their mediocre, watered-down Christmas is the true meaning of Christmas. With this view of Christmas, they do not expect much for the next Christmas. Therefore, they see little need for Advent, since things that do not mean much (like Christmas) do not need much preparation. Thus they have another poor Advent, leading to another substandard Christmas, leading to a poorer Advent and Christmas next year, etc.
Are you in a descending spiral of Advents and Christmases? This is very bad for your life, death, and afterlife. Throw your heart into Advent now before you miss out on Christmas again.
Prayer: Father, give me Your level of Advent.
Promise: "A Star shall advance from Jacob, and a Staff shall rise from Israel." -Nm 24:17
Praise: Elizabeth's faith in and understanding of Christ has grown steadily year by year.
(To get out of a descending spiral, learn more about the Bible. Order, listen to or download the following series on our website: "Overview of the Bible" is six CDs starting CD 10 A-1 or three DVDs starting with DVD 10 A. "An Introduction to each Book of the Bible" is thirty-two CDs starting with CD 21-1 or seventeen DVDs starting with DVD 21.)

COMING UP ROSES - One Bread, One Body, 12/15/2019

COMING UP ROSES
"They will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee." -Isaiah 35:10
In the Catholic community, we call today "Gaudete Sunday," meaning "Rejoice Sunday." We rejoice because the Lord's Christmas coming is near. Our priests wear rose vestments today to express our exuberant joy. We are flushed with joy because the world's dire circumstances are overshadowed by God's presence. In the shadow of His wings, we shout for joy (Ps 63:8). We rejoice not in the circumstances but in the Lord of the circumstances (Phil 4:4). We rejoice because God is with us (Is 7:14; Mt 1:23).
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" (Heb 13:8). "The blind recover their sight, cripples walk, lepers are cured, the deaf hear, dead men are raised to life, and the poor have the good news preached to them" (Mt 11:5). "Despite the increase of sin, grace has far surpassed it" (Rm 5:20). Therefore, "be patient," my brothers and sisters, "until the coming of the Lord" (Jas 5:7). "You may for a time have to suffer the distress of many trials; but this is so that your faith, which is more precious than the passing splendor of fire-tried gold, may by its genuineness lead to praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ appears" (1 Pt 1:6-7).
Prayer: Father, may the joy inside me rise to fever pitch (Acts 8:8).
Promise: "The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song." -Is 35:1-2
Praise: Thank You, Jesus! You were mocked, spit upon, scourged and put to death. Just as You promised, You rose on the third day (see Mk 10:34). Glory to You forever!

PREPARING TO PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS - One Bread, One Body, 12/14/2019

PREPARING TO PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS
"Elijah has already come, but they did not recognize him." -Matthew 17:12
The prophetic ministry of Elijah prepared the way for the prophetic ministry of St. John the Baptizer. John prophesied "in the spirit and power of Elijah" (Lk 1:17). Jesus even stated that John "is Elijah" (Mt 11:14). Elijah prepared the way for John, who came to "prepare the way of the Lord" (Mt 3:3). God prepared the way for His Son's coming for centuries. He sent prophet after prophet. He gave visions, warnings, and encouragements. In fact, the entire Old Testament points to the coming of Jesus, the Messiah.
If God, Who is all-knowing and always ready, spent centuries preparing for Christmas, then we, who know so little and are often unprepared for the future, surely need at least four weeks of Advent to prepare for Christ's Christmas coming. We need Elijah's ministry of fire (Sir 48:1, 3) to burn away the "holiday" distractions and fill us with the fire of the Holy Spirit. We need to be immersed in John's "baptism of repentance" this Advent (Mk 1:4). Our sincere Advent Confession removes "speed bumps" of sin (see Lk 3:5), which prevent us from being quick to welcome Jesus. Instead of preparing for the "holidays" by attending Christmas parties, we need to prepare for "Christ-Mass" by attending Christmas banquets, that is, Masses, which are Eucharistic banquets of the Lamb. "Prepare the way of the Lord" this Advent, and have the Christmas of a lifetime.
Prayer: Father, this Advent, may I "learn to value the things that really matter" in life (Phil 1:10). I devote my life to seeking Jesus.
Promise: "Give us new life, and we will call upon Your name." -Ps 80:19
Praise: "He who will not take up his cross and come after me is not worthy of me" (Mt 10:38). St. John of the Cross, who spent time imprisoned for his reform efforts, understood the cost of discipleship.

ERASED
"Their name never cut off or blotted out from My presence..." -Isaiah 48:19
When we decide to commit our lives to Jesus and express our faith through Baptism, our names are inscribed in the book of the living. This decision to accept Christ is more important than anything else in life. Jesus said: "Do not rejoice so much in the fact that the devils are subject to you as that your names are inscribed in heaven" (Lk 10:20).
On Judgment Day, anyone whose name is "not found inscribed in the book of the living" will be hurled into the pool of fire (Rv 20:15). However, once our names are in the book, they can be erased. Our names can be cut off and blotted out from His presence (cf Is 48:19). "The Lord answered, 'Him only who has sinned against Me will I strike out of My book' " (Ex 32:33; see also Ps 69:29). However, if we are victorious over the temptations of the evil one, our names will never be erased. Jesus promised: "The victor shall go clothed in white. I will never erase his name from the book of the living, but will acknowledge him in the presence of My Father" (Rv 3:5).
Twelve days from today will be Christmas. Will you celebrate Christ and Christmas eternally or choose by sin to be erased? Make this Christmas last forever. "Be solicitous to make your call and election permanent, brothers; surely those who do so will never be lost. On the contrary, your entry into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for" (2 Pt 1:10-11).
Prayer: Jesus, may I never erase You from any part of my life.
Promise: "Time will prove where wisdom lies." -Mt 11:19
Praise: St. Lucy, who lived in Sicily, bravely won a martyr's crown under the yoke of Emperor Diocletian's persecution.
(Presentation Ministries' Discipleship Retreats equip you to imitate Christ in His character and mission. See our website www.presentationministries.com for more information on upcoming retreats.)

SHE REVERSES THE CURSES
"Your deed of hope will never be forgotten by those who tell of the might of God." -Judith 13:19
When Adam and Eve committed the first sin, the result was three curses. The devil was cursed, and the Lord put enmity between us and him (Gn 3:15). Women were also cursed through the pains of childbearing (Gn 3:16). Men were cursed through manual labor (Gn 3:17).
These three curses have been turned into blessings by Jesus. In Jesus, Mary reverses the curses. At Jesus' Incarnation, the archangel Gabriel announced that Mary was blessed among women (Lk 1:28). Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out: "Blest are you among women and blest is the Fruit of your womb" (Lk 1:42). Mary herself magnified the Lord and said: "All ages to come shall call me blessed" (Lk 1:48). "Blessed" is the opposite of "cursed."
The Lord has empowered Mary to reverse the curses because she and the other disciples of her Son put the devil's enmity to death, as "the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under [their] feet" (Rm 16:20). (Look at Mary's feet in a picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe.) Moreover, Mary's childbearing was not a curse, but the birth of the One Who freed us from the curses. (The picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe shows Mary pregnant.) Finally, Mary spent her life doing hard work. In her work, she was blessed, not cursed. (Our Lady of Guadalupe wears the work clothes of a peasant woman.) Love Jesus as Mary does. Reverse the curses.
Prayer: Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us and the Americas.
Promise: "See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord." -Zec 2:14
Praise: Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in a small village near Mexico City. She showed herself to him as one of the native people; as the Queen of all people. As a result, over nine million Indians became Catholic in a very short time. She helped heal the wounds between the native population and Spanish settlers.
