FOLLOW-UP FASTING
"They shall call you, 'Restorer of ruined homesteads.' " -Isaiah 58:12
One of the later catalytic effects of fasting is: "The ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake, and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up; 'Repairer of the breach,' they shall call you, 'Restorer of ruined homesteads' " (Is 58:12). Our culture of death is by definition a culture of broken relationships. We have mass-produced ruined homesteads. If you will let the Lord rebuild these ancient ruins for your sake, your fasting and obedient follow-up to fasting is exceptionally important to the world. You are the very person the world needs desperately.
Think of the broken-hearted, betrayed, rejected, divorced people you can see healed by your obeying the details of Isaiah's teaching on fasting and its multiple, catalytic effects. Think of all the "fatherless" children, those with absent or "multiple" fathers. Think of their confusion and insecurity. Think of the countless abortions, abuses, promiscuities, and contraceptions. In love, fast each day of Lent by limiting your intake of food and drink according to God's will. In love, follow up your fasting by giving others opportunities for freedom, showing them mercy (Mt 5:7), and doing them justice (see Is 58:6-7, 9-10). If you follow up on your fasting, you will see every promise the Lord has given in Isaiah Chapter 58 fulfilled, including the restoration of ruined homesteads. If you continue this follow-up, the Lord "will make you ride on the heights of the earth" (Is 58:14).
Show your love in a most needed, practical way. Take God at His Word. Fast and follow up.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me Isaiah 58 and give me the faith and power to accept its graces.
Promise: "Leaving everything behind, Levi stood up and became His follower." -Lk 5:28
Praise: Patricia volunteers at a food pantry, offering food, encouragement, and prayers to all she serves.

GROWLING STOMACHS AND HUNGRY MINDS
"Why do we fast, and You do not see it? afflict ourselves, and You take no note of it?" -Isaiah 58:3
On this third day of Lent and worldwide day of abstinence from meat, it is good to recall that Lent is not merely abstaining but also fasting, that is, limiting our intake of food and drink. Lent is a forty-day fast in imitation of Jesus' fasting in the desert (Mt 4:2).
Fasting must be done in the right spirit (see Is 58:3-4), but this right spirit should not substitute for fasting but authenticate it. For example, it's good to abstain from gossip, TV viewing, smartphones, and other selfish pursuits. These things may need to accompany fasting, but they are not fasting, for fasting always entails the limiting of our food and drink. Let's not spiritualize fasting and take away its essential material element. Let's not spiritualize Christianity and forget its fundamental, incarnational essence. "Take note, the spiritual was not first; first came the natural and after that the spiritual" (1 Cor 15:46).
Let us have both a natural and a spiritual Lent. May our Lent be as physical as growling stomachs, hunger pains, and lost weight. May Lent then be as spiritual as repentance, reconciliation in relationships, and total commitment to the Lord. In this Lent, both "offer your bodies as a living sacrifice" and "be transformed by the renewal of your mind" (Rm 12:1-2).
Prayer: Father, give me a fully human Lent.
Promise: "Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed." -Is 58:8
Praise: At a healing service, the Lord healed Barbara of deafness in one of her ears.

A MOST UNUSUAL MASS
Jesus "must first endure many sufferings." -Luke 9:22
Today, on this second day of Lent, I celebrated one of the most unusual Masses of my almost thirty years of priesthood. I was in a hospital room, and the time for my colon surgery was moved up. The nurses had already put a tube down my nose, and the anesthesiologist was about to give me my first shot. I had to rush to have Mass, all the while enduring the irritation of the tube down my nose.
When I painstakingly read the Gospel, the verses meant much more to me than ever before: "The Son of Man...must first endure many sufferings" (Lk 9:22). Then "Jesus said to all: 'Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in My steps. Whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will save it' " (Lk 9:23-24). Jesus suffered more terribly than anyone has ever suffered. The disciples of Jesus share in His sufferings.
As we begin Lent and walk the way of the cross in imitation of Jesus, let us pray for a great miracle of love in which we rejoice to share Christ's sufferings (Col 1:24; 1 Pt 4:13). When we know nothing but Christ crucified (1 Cor 2:2), we know all we need to know to be ready to renew our baptismal promises and enter into the glory of Easter. "If we have died with Him we shall also live with Him" (2 Tm 2:11; see also Rm 6:8).
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to take me more deeply into the mystery of the cross.
Promise: "I call heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life." -Dt 30:19
Praise: Dr. Todd, a surgeon, prays with his patients before their operation.

LENT IN THE HOSPITAL
"Blow the trumpet in Zion! proclaim a fast." -Joel 2:15
I have written One Bread, One Body for about twenty years. Most of the time I have written these daily teachings in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Occasionally, I have to write these teachings on airplanes and at other sundry locations. Today, on this first day of Lent, I write from my hospital bed with an IV in my arm, as I await potential surgery.
Today, throughout the world, many millions of Catholics hear the sobering words: "Remember, man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return." A hospital bed is a good place to appreciate this command and statement. A hospital bed is a good place to hear another command: "Yet even now, says the Lord, return to Me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning" (Jl 2:12). We know we should repent. But is it actually a matter of life or death, of salvation or damnation? A hospital bed is a good place to hear the wonderful promise: "Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" (2 Cor 6:2) In the hospital, "now" tends to mean more than "tomorrow." A hospital bed is a good place to begin Lent and take God so dead seriously that we enter more fully into eternal life.
Have the holiest Lent ever, the Lent of a lifetime, a springtime of your life in the Spirit.
Prayer: Father, teach me the deeper meanings of an ashen cross.
Promise: "Then the Lord was stirred to concern for His land and took pity on His people." -Jl 2:18
Praise: Before becoming Catholic Ted visited a Church on Ash Wednesday. He felt great peace and proceeded to receive instructions on the Faith in an RCIA class.

WAR OF THE WORLDS
"Where do the conflicts and disputes among you originate? Is it not your inner cravings that make war within your members?" -James 4:1
We have soldiers, bombs, policemen, and lawyers to deal with conflicts and disputes. We spend a fortune on our symptoms but avoid dealing with the causes, that is, our inner cravings making war within our members. Only the "Holy Spirit, Who is within" (1 Cor 6:19), can deal with the war within.
"The flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; the two are directly opposed" (Gal 5:17). "My point is that you should live in accord with the Spirit and you will not yield to the cravings of the flesh" (Gal 5:16). "If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live" (Rm 8:13).
The Spirit will convict us of sin, justice, and condemnation (Jn 16:8). He will take us to the cross and show us the connection between our sins and Jesus' suffering and death. After that, we will never be the same. We will be crucified to the world and the world to us (Gal 6:14). We will no longer make provision for the inner cravings of the flesh. We will put on the Lord Jesus Christ (Rm 13:14). We will have victory inside and victory outside. The war will be won in the power of the Spirit.
Prayer: Jesus, You won the war on Calvary. May I claim Your victory by the power of the Spirit. May I be more than a conqueror (Rm 8:37).
Promise: "Cast your care upon the Lord, and He will support you." -Ps 55:23
Praise: Jane prayed for the grace to stop smoking. She experienced an immediate outpouring of the Holy Spirit and has not smoked since.

HIGHLY RESTRICTED, DEMONIC AREA - One Bread, One Body, 2/24/2020

HIGHLY RESTRICTED, DEMONIC AREA
"When Jesus arrived at the house His disciples began to ask Him privately, 'Why is it that we could not expel it?' He told them, 'This kind you can drive out only by prayer.' " -Mark 9:28-29
Demons are part of everyday life on earth. The Lord allows demons to tempt us and even harass us. We live in the midst of demonic degradation and destruction (see 1 Pt 5:8; Eph 6:12).
However, we can greatly minimize demonic influence in our surroundings by being baptized and living fully our Baptisms. When we were baptized, we rejected Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises. Even if we should sin after Baptism, we can cut short demonic opportunities by going to Confession as soon as possible after we sin. Moreover, by regular Confession, we can strengthen ourselves and avoid falling into sin. Finally, by committed prayer, we can drive out demons, which we would otherwise have to endure (Mk 9:29). So many people unnecessarily let demons persist for years in their disruptive, degrading activities because they don't take seriously Jesus' statement: "This kind you can drive out only by prayer" (Mk 9:29).
At this time, Satan and his demons are restricted (see Rv 20:2; 2 Thes 2:6-7). Let us make sure they are as restricted as possible.
Prayer: Father, make me completely intolerant of demonic activity.
Promise: "If one of you is wise and understanding, let him show this in practice through a humility filled with good sense." -Jas 3:13
Praise: After confessing his sins, Steven received the grace to avoid occasions tempting him to sin again.

PM eNewsletter 7th Sunday in ordinary time
February 23rd Seventh Sunday in ordinary time
Jesus, as we receive ashes this Wednesday, let it truly remind us that we are born into this life as a
pilgram on a journey to get us into true life, eternal life, with You.
Lord, let us see in the ashes, our reminder to life in, to and through, You, in everything.
Let us see that we were baptised into kinship with You, and that someday, we will enter that heavenly
kingdom, where we will rejoice and praise the triune God forever.
Jesus, let us never fear death, but see it as a natural progression to get us into Your eternal presence.
Let us prepare for our home coming this Lent.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/23/2020
"But what I say to you is: offer no resistance to injury." -Matthew 5:39
Jesus sounds so naive. Everybody knows we must resist injury. Jesus says that after we've been hit on one
cheek, we should turn the other. We'll seemingly get killed if we take His advice. However, the Sermon on
the Mount is not "advice"; it is the Lord's command. Nonetheless, we rationalize that Jesus' message in
the Sermon on the Mount is poetic, symbolic, anything but literal.
Sometimes Jesus does not speak literally, as when He said to gouge out our eye (Mt 5:29). So we're tempted
to assume the Sermon on the Mount, especially this part of it, must not be literal. Yet Jesus did literally
turn the other cheek, hand over His garments and walk the extra mile, even up Mount Calvary to be crucified
(Mt 5:39-41). If we deny that the Sermon on the Mount is literal, we may be denying that we must imitate
the crucified Christ. Jesus is literally calling us to make a U-turn and live a radically different
lifestyle. Following Jesus is not just a modification of a worldly life, but an utterly new way to live.
Will you decide to be a Christian on Jesus' terms - not as other people are, not as you want, but as He
wills? Accept the Preacher and the preaching of the Sermon on the Mount.
Prayer: Jesus, it's impossible to be a Christian without Your constant amazing grace. Pour out the Holy
Spirit in my life.
Promise: "For the wisdom of this world is absurdity with God." -1 Cor 3:19
Praise: Risen Lord Jesus, how can we thank You enough? You are our older Brother, having gone before us as
"the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep" (see 1 Cor 15:20). We adore You.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
END HUNGER
THE CHURCH AND THE POOR
For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways and
through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery are not
different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and support
them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may boast its
own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.
"HOPES OF MILLIONS"
The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that great
number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and yet
recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.
"EFFECTIVE HELP"
The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and solidarity,
and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

TURN THE OTHER CHEEK - One Bread, One Body, 2/23/2020
Sunday, February 23, 2020, 7th Sunday Ordinary Time
Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18, 1 Corinthians 3:16-23, Psalm 103:1-4, 8, 10, 12-13, Matthew 5:38-48

TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
"But what I say to you is: offer no resistance to injury." -Matthew 5:39
Jesus sounds so naive. Everybody knows we must resist injury. Jesus says that after we've been hit on one cheek, we should turn the other. We'll seemingly get killed if we take His advice. However, the Sermon on the Mount is not "advice"; it is the Lord's command. Nonetheless, we rationalize that Jesus' message in the Sermon on the Mount is poetic, symbolic, anything but literal.
Sometimes Jesus does not speak literally, as when He said to gouge out our eye (Mt 5:29). So we're tempted to assume the Sermon on the Mount, especially this part of it, must not be literal. Yet Jesus did literally turn the other cheek, hand over His garments and walk the extra mile, even up Mount Calvary to be crucified (Mt 5:39-41). If we deny that the Sermon on the Mount is literal, we may be denying that we must imitate the crucified Christ. Jesus is literally calling us to make a U-turn and live a radically different lifestyle. Following Jesus is not just a modification of a worldly life, but an utterly new way to live.
Will you decide to be a Christian on Jesus' terms - not as other people are, not as you want, but as He wills? Accept the Preacher and the preaching of the Sermon on the Mount.
Prayer: Jesus, it's impossible to be a Christian without Your constant amazing grace. Pour out the Holy Spirit in my life.
Promise: "For the wisdom of this world is absurdity with God." -1 Cor 3:19
Praise: Risen Lord Jesus, how can we thank You enough? You are our older Brother, having gone before us as "the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep" (see 1 Cor 15:20). We adore You.
(For a related teaching on "Meeting the Risen Christ", order, listen to, or download our CD 4A-1 or DVD 4A on our website.)

CHAIR-PERSON - One Bread, One Body, 2/22/2020
Saturday, February 22, 2020, Chair of St. Peter
1 Peter 5:1-4, Psalm 23:1-6, Matthew 16:13-19
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022220.cfm
CHAIR-PERSON
"Jesus replied, 'Blest are you, Simon son of Jonah! No mere man has revealed this to you, but My heavenly Father. I for My part declare to you, you are "Rock," and on this rock I will build My Church.' " -Matthew 16:17-18
Only the Catholic Church would celebrate a chair. We Catholics don't need much of a reason for a party. The chair represents the authority of the Pope and the unity of the Church. We believe Jesus chose St. Peter as leader of the Church and intended that others succeed Peter as its leader. We rejoice in this order because it is God's way of protecting, guiding, and unifying us.
Although Satan is the master of deception and we seem too weak to deal with his attacks, we remain confident because the Lord will tell us what to do. God knows how to guard His people and "there is no snatching out of His hand" (Jn 10:29).
The Lord has chosen the Pope as the main instrument of His protection, guidance, and unity. We celebrate God's provision for the Church's needs. To benefit fully from God's plan, we should:
* pray for the Pope daily,
* read what he writes,
* speak well of him, and
* obey him.
Let's submit ourselves to God-given authority and receive God's gifts (see Heb 13:17).
Prayer: Jesus, may I do it Your way.
Promise: "God's flock is in your midst; give it a shepherd's care...When the Chief Shepherd appears you will win for yourselves the unfading crown of glory." -1 Pt 5:2, 4
Praise: St. Peter, our first Pope, taught many profound truths in his two epistles. Significantly, by means of the Incarnation, we "become sharers of the divine nature" (2 Pt 1:4).
(We offer a Women's Retreat Mar 20-21, "Mary's Life in the Spirit". Let us look to Mary as our example in living a Spirit-filled life. Call 513-373-2397 or 937-587-5464 or email us at retreats@presentationministries.com to register.)

LIVE SHAME-LESSLY - One Bread, One Body, 2/21/2020
Friday, February 21, 2020, St. Peter Damian
James 2:14-24, 26, Psalm 112:1-6, Mark 8:34-9:1

LIVE SHAME-LESSLY
"If anyone in this faithless and corrupt age is ashamed of Me and My doctrine, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes with the holy angels in His Father's glory." -Mark 8:38
We are never to be ashamed of Jesus (Mk 8:38), His words, or the Gospel (Rm 1:16). We should never be ashamed "of the law of the Most High and His precepts, or of the sentence to be passed upon the sinful" (Sir 42:2). We should never be ashamed of taking measures to be just, cautious, and discreet (Sir 42:3-8).
We should always be ashamed of immorality, falsehood, flattery, crime, disloyalty, lying, stealing, overeating, stinginess, aloofness, impure glances, thoughts and actions, harsh words, insults, and betraying secrets (Sir 41:15-24; cf Gal 5:19-21).
By believing in Jesus, loving Him, and not being ashamed of Him, we receive the grace to resist temptations and not fall into the shameful consequences of sin. "There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rm 8:1). Without a total commitment to Jesus, shame or a dead conscience is inevitable. Only in Christ are we truly shameless (see Ps 34:6) and living in the full dignity of a child of God. In Christ, live shamelessly.
Prayer: Father, exterminate shame from my life.
Promise: "Be assured, then, that faith without works is dead as a body without breath." -Jas 2:26
Praise: St. Peter Damian generally shared his meals with several poor people, serving them himself (see Lk 14:13-14).
(For a related teaching on "Shame", order, listen to, or download our CD 54-3 or DVD 54 on our website.)

ZONED PARTIALLY RESIDENTIAL - One Bread, One Body, 2/20/2020

ZONED PARTIALLY RESIDENTIAL
"Your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not allow of favoritism." -James 2:1
Many Christians do not show partiality, prejudice, or racism by their words. They know this is wrong; so they don't do it. However, many Christians still show partiality in subtle ways. For example, many Christians choose to live apart from the poor. They may not have asked the Lord about their places of residence. They just assumed that the Lord wanted them to live in the so-called better neighborhoods if they could afford it or even if they couldn't afford it.
These decisions have many ramifications. Those who don't live near the poor don't talk, eat, worship, and shop with the poor. Someone once said that in the USA the most segregated hours of the week are Sunday from 10 AM to 12 Noon, when whites go to white churches and blacks to black churches. Our subtle partiality has turned into segregation, a lack of solidarity, and a denial of catholicity.
Let us examine our consciences about our residences. By faith in Jesus, let us root out partiality (see Gal 3:28). Otherwise, it will alter our faith. Let Jesus be Lord of our residences and lives.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to use me to break down the division between the rich and the poor.
Promise: "You are the Messiah!" -Mk 8:29
Praise: David's parish welcomes worshippers of all colors, and is growing steadily in attendance.

QUIET POWER - One Bread, One Body, 2/19/2020
Wednesday, February 19, 2020
James 1:19-27, Psalm 15:2-5, Mark 8:22-26

QUIET POWER
"Act on this word. If all you do is listen to it, you are deceiving yourselves." -James 1:22
The writer of the book of James commands us to be "slow to speak" (Jas 1:19) and to bridle our tongues (Jas 1:26). Between these two references to speech, the writer commands us to be doers of the Word (Jas 1:22, RNAB). The writer may be implying that if we speak too much, we will do too little in living God's Word. A "big mouth" often does little work. Those who talk too much don't walk too much. Hot air may not power anything but a balloon.
Many Christians aren't producing. They are not leading people to Christ and not building the kingdom of God. Many Christians today are talking more than any Christians have ever talked in history. We are the least silent of all people in history. We have smart phones, texting, talk shows, and chat rooms. We talk and talk and talk. Sometimes we think that just talking about something is a substitute for doing it. Maybe our excessive talk has something to do with our stumbling walk. So "let us love in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it" (1 Jn 3:18).
Let us begin to reclaim silence as an essential part of our lives in Christ (see Lk 5:16). Be silent at a set time for at least five minutes a day or five minutes more a day. During Lent, increase this time. At Easter, may you erupt with power and do God's Word as never before.
Prayer: Father, make me a man or woman of action who is devoted to listening for Your voice. "O Lord, set a watch before my mouth, a guard at the door of my lips" (Ps 141:3).
Promise: "His sight was restored and he could see everything clearly." -Mk 8:25
Praise: Bernadette began spending time in adoration during Lent.

THE HOLY SPIRIT OR TOTALITARIAN DICTATORS? - One Bread, One Body, 2/18/2020

THE HOLY SPIRIT OR TOTALITARIAN DICTATORS?
"The tug and lure of his own passion tempt every man." -James 1:14
Our desires are dangerous because they can conceive and bring forth sin (Jas 1:15). As sin grows, "it begets death" (Jas 1:15). We must control our desires, or we will live a living death (see 1 Jn 3:14).
Naturally, our desires seek to be totalitarian dictators - to dictate every aspect of our lives. Only the Lord, Who created our desires, can redeem them and free us from their determination for dictatorship. The Father through the Son sends the Holy Spirit to strongly fight in opposition to our natural, fallen desires (Gal 5:17). If we live in the Spirit (Gal 5:25) by living our Baptism, we crucify our "flesh with its passions and desires" (Gal 5:24).
Thus, life is either freedom in the Spirit or slavery to desires. "Doing our own thing" is not freedom but thinly disguised slavery. Doing God's thing by the power of the Holy Spirit is a freedom so profound that it frees us even from death and for eternal life.
Do you want true freedom? Then you want to deny yourself (Lk 9:23) and be docile to the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Father, may I not be deceived into thinking that slavery is freedom.
Promise: "He wills to bring us to birth with a word spoken in truth so that we may be a kind of first fruits of His creatures." -Jas 1:18
Praise: Through the fervent intercession of his friends, Paul was set free from his addiction.

LIVING THE MIRACULOUS LIFE - One Bread, One Body, 2/17/2020
Monday, February 17, 2020, Founders of the Servites
James 1:1-11, Psalm 119:67-68, 71-72, 75-76, Mark 8:11-13

LIVING THE MIRACULOUS LIFE
"My brothers, count it pure joy when you are involved in every sort of trial." -James 1:2
For about thirty years I have taught the Lord's command to consider various trials "all joy." Today I read this in my hospital room. I haven't been allowed to eat or drink even water or ice chips for about a day. I've had an IV stuck in me for hours. And I have had four enemas. It has never been more clear to me that the command to consider trials "all joy" is truly a miracle.
This command is not a burdensome challenge to our will-power but a call to rise above ourselves and live in the supernatural dimension by utterly depending on the Lord. This grace strengthens our faith, producing perseverance which can result in our becoming "fully mature and lacking in nothing" (Jas 1:4). How privileged we are to be commanded to do things that we cannot do! How blessed we are to move from grace to grace and not just from human limitation to human limitation! May we let the Lord repeatedly do the impossible in our lives. Let us rejoice in sufferings (Col 1:24; 1 Pt 4:13), love our enemies (Lk 6:27, 35), deny our very selves (Lk 9:23), and generally do things we cannot do. Live the new, abundant, eternal life in the Lord.
Prayer: Father, fill me with joy in living in You.
Promise: "If any of you is without wisdom, let him ask it from the God Who gives generously and ungrudgingly to all, and it will be given him." -Jas 1:5
Praise: In the year 1240, seven prominent men of Florence withdrew from society for a solitary life of prayer with direct service to God. Out of this came the Order of the Servites.
(Editor's Note: Fr. Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of "One Bread, One Body", passed away in October 2002 of liver cancer. In the coming weeks, we are re-publishing a series of Father's reflections from his final months of suffering.)

"I tell you, unless your holiness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you shall not enter the kingdom
of God." -Matthew 5:20
Jesus has higher standards than anyone who has ever lived. He has the highest standards for harmony in
relationships (Mt 5:22), purity in sexuality (Mt 5:28), faithfulness in marriage (Mt 5:32), truth in speech
(Mt 5:34), and love for enemies (Mt 5:39, 44). In Jesus, we don't just control our tempers but crucify them
(Gal 5:24). Jesus commands us to destroy our bodies rather than look lustfully at someone else's body, and to
divorce ourselves from unforgiveness and sin rather than from our spouses. Jesus commands us to express the
truth rather than express our own agenda. We are to treat our enemies even better than we treat our friends
(see Lk 15:20ff).
Jesus' standards are intentionally impossible. Humanly speaking, we cannot meet these standards, no matter how
hard we try. Jesus is not into self-improvement, but self-denial. We're not concerned with behavior
modification but rebirth. We don't try to educate our old nature but drown it in the waters of Baptism. We're
not trying to make ourselves better, but to let Him make us new (Rv 21:5).
Prayer: Father, by Your grace may I live the impossible and prove that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the
Life (Jn 14:6).
Promise: "Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for
those who love Him." -1 Cor 2:9
Praise: Thank You, Jesus! You were "handed over to death for our sins and raised up for our justification"
(Rm. 4:25).

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
https://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-11.asp?navlink=latest
Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
END HUNGER
WE CAN DO IT
We do indeed have the adequate means and framework so that beautiful words and good wishes may become an
action plan of substance that leads effectively to the eradication of hunger in our world. To this end we
need joint efforts, upright hearts, and persistent concern to firmly and resolutely make the other's
problems one's own.
"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"
There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end hunger, and this
ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by all peoples and all religious
persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at the heart of all initiatives and consists in
"doing to another what we would want done to ourselves."
DON'T BE INDIFFERENT
... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
DON'T BE INDIFFERENT
... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

LIVING THE IMPOSSIBLE - One Bread, One Body, 2/16/2020

LIVING THE IMPOSSIBLE
"I tell you, unless your holiness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you shall not enter the kingdom of God." -Matthew 5:20
Jesus has higher standards than anyone who has ever lived. He has the highest standards for harmony in relationships (Mt 5:22), purity in sexuality (Mt 5:28), faithfulness in marriage (Mt 5:32), truth in speech (Mt 5:34), and love for enemies (Mt 5:39, 44). In Jesus, we don't just control our tempers but crucify them (Gal 5:24). Jesus commands us to destroy our bodies rather than look lustfully at someone else's body, and to divorce ourselves from unforgiveness and sin rather than from our spouses. Jesus commands us to express the truth rather than express our own agenda. We are to treat our enemies even better than we treat our friends (see Lk 15:20ff).
Jesus' standards are intentionally impossible. Humanly speaking, we cannot meet these standards, no matter how hard we try. Jesus is not into self-improvement, but self-denial. We're not concerned with behavior modification but rebirth. We don't try to educate our old nature but drown it in the waters of Baptism. We're not trying to make ourselves better, but to let Him make us new (Rv 21:5).
Prayer: Father, by Your grace may I live the impossible and prove that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Jn 14:6).
Promise: "Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him." -1 Cor 2:9
Praise: Thank You, Jesus! You were "handed over to death for our sins and raised up for our justification" (Rm. 4:25).

WHAT RELIGION ARE YOU? - One Bread, One Body, 2/15/2020
Saturday, February 15, 2020
1 Kings 12:26-32; 13:33-34, Psalm 106:6-7, 19-22, Mark 8:1-10
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021520.cfm
WHAT RELIGION ARE YOU?
"Jeroboam thought to himself: 'The kingdom will return to David's house. If now this people go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, the hearts of this people will return to their master, Rehoboam, king of Judah.' " -1 Kings 12:26-27
Jeroboam realized that religion is part of human nature. Therefore, human beings must be religious. The only question is: "Will we be committed to the only true religion, Judaism fulfilled in the Church, or will we be involved in some of the many thousands of false religions?" Some think they have proven Jeroboam wrong: they say they don't need religion. However, they end up replacing God with themselves or an idea such as socialism or secular humanism. Then they religiously follow their "anti-religion."
God constantly calls us away from false religions to "worship the Father in Spirit and truth. Indeed, it is just such worshipers the Father seeks" (Jn 4:23). The writer of the book of James summarizes the old covenant's delineation of true religion: Religion that is pure and undefiled before God is to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world (see Jas 1:27, RNAB). Even with these clarifications, human beings tend to be deceived about religion. So God the Father sent Jesus, fully man and fully God.
Now we know the only Way to which our religious aspirations should be directed. Now we know the Way to the true, religious life (see Jn 14:6).
Prayer: Father, free me from false religions. Give me Your pure, true religion in Christ.
Promise: "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd." -Mk 8:2
Praise: Now that he has been set free of his addiction to pornography, Mark witnesses freely to the joy of living in Christ.
(To help you have a spiritual Lent, consider ordering, viewing or downloading our leaflet "Lent and the Renewal of Our Baptismal Promises" on our website.)

FROM HEALING TO BAPTISM TO HEALING - One Bread, One Body, 2/14/2020
Friday, February 14, 2020, Sts. Cyril & Methodius
1 Kings 11:29-32; 12:19, Psalm 81:10-15, Mark 7:31-37

FROM HEALING TO BAPTISM TO HEALING
"Their amazement went beyond all bounds: 'He has done everything well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!' " -Mark 7:37
Jesus healed people physically as a sign of healing people spiritually. He opened the ears of the deaf and freed the tongues of the mute as a sign that He would open our ears so that we can have a greater faith and open our mouths to proclaim that faith (see Mk 7:35).
Our spiritual deafness, dumbness, blindness, and paralysis are potentially damning. We live in potentially devastating spiritual conditions. However, Jesus is our Hope, our only Hope, and His continuing ministry of healing expresses that hope and points to its fulfillment in the sacrament of Baptism.
Healing accompanies the proclamation of the Gospel, leading to faith and Baptism (see Mk 16:16-18). Then Baptism leads us to receiving and giving Jesus' ministry of healing, which further leads us to participate in Jesus' ministry of hope leading others to faith, salvation, and Baptism.
At Baptism, we pray Jesus' prayer "Ephphatha" (see Mk 7:34). This is the ultimate opening. The baptized have spiritually opened ears, mouths, eyes, and hearts. May healing lead to and from Baptism.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to guide me more deeply into the mystery of Baptism.
Promise: Jesus "put His fingers into the man's ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then He looked up to heaven and emitted a groan. He said to him, 'Ephphatha!' (that is, 'Be opened!')" -Mk 7:33-34
Praise: Sts. Cyril & Methodius were brothers and great missionaries to the Slavic peoples of Eastern Europe. St. Cyril devotedly translated the Bible and liturgical texts into Slavonic.
(Lent is coming. Consider ordering, viewing or downloading our leaflet "A Prophetic Lent", a biblical reading guide for Lent, on our website.)

WANT OR WANTON?
"The Lord said to Solomon: 'Since this is what you want...' " -1 Kings 11:11
Solomon made a great start in following the Lord. In his youth, God presented Solomon with the chance to have anything he wanted (1 Kgs 3:5ff). Solomon chose wisdom, so as to rule God's people with understanding and justice. God was pleased with Solomon's choice (1 Kgs 3:10).
Later in life, however, Solomon used his God-given power to indulge his own wanton desires rather than fulfilling God's desires. He fell so far into lust and idolatry that his heart turned away from the Lord. Solomon didn't want God anymore, and he therefore deprived himself of the kingdom (see 1 Kgs 11:11).
One day of unfaithfulness and wantonness leads to the next day of sin. After a while, Solomon's heart was far from the Lord. Unfaithfulness was what Solomon wanted (1 Kgs 11:11), and the bitter consequences of unfaithfulness are what he got (see Rm 6:23).
Faithfulness to God consists in daily seeking God, His way of righteousness, and His kingship over us (see Mt 6:33). Every day we Christians must pick up our cross, deny ourselves, and follow Jesus (Lk 9:23). If we want God, we can find Him (Jer 29:13-14). He is always seeking us and waiting for us to want Him.
Discipleship is all in the wanting. What do you want?
Prayer: Father, let me be faithful to Your teaching, and never let me be parted from You.
Promise: "Happy are they who observe what is right, who do always what is just." -Ps 106:3
Praise: After visiting a Catholic church, Sheila knew she wanted to be Catholic. She attended an RCIA program, and now rejoices in receiving the Holy Eucharist.

WISE MEN AND WOMEN STILL SEEK HIM
"The queen of Sheba, having heard of Solomon's fame, came...She arrived in Jerusalem." -1 Kings 10:1, 2
Jesus testified that the queen of Sheba, that is, "the queen of the South," "came from the farthest corner of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon" (Mt 12:42). She had a strong desire to listen to the wisdom of Israel as spoken through Solomon (2 Chr 9:1-2). She willingly suffered the rigors, hardships, and expenses of long-distance travel in the arid, ancient world to find this wisdom (1 Kgs 10:1ff). Jesus approved of her quest, and inferred that she "will rise at the judgment" and find eternal life (Lk 11:31). Isaiah prophesied that "all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord" (Is 60:6). In the spirit of their queen, the people of Sheba travel a long way to seek God's wisdom and bring Him gifts.
Another group of travelers from the East later sought the Lord and His wisdom, and brought gifts of gold and frankincense (Mt 2:11). They also sought the Lord in the spirit of the queen of Sheba. They are known even today as "wise men." Their true wisdom comes not from their IQs, but because they were wise enough to seek God, no matter how difficult the journey.
The above pilgrims spared no pains to seek God and His wisdom. They found what they were seeking (see Mt 7:7). By comparison, how much do we want God's wisdom? To seek God's wisdom today, we need only sit at home and read our Bibles or hop in our cars and go to Mass. Will we pay the price to seek God as they did? As Jesus commented, these travelers will rise at the judgment along with us. With Jesus, they will judge others (see Lk 11:31-32). How will they judge us?
Prayer: Father, may I spend everything to get wisdom (Prv 4:7).
Promise: "Commit to the Lord your way; trust in Him, and He will act." -Ps 37:5
Praise: Joe and Marie began praying together for Wisdom and in the process the Lord renewed their marriage.
