"I DO!" OR "I DO..."?
"Teacher, what must I do?" —Mark 10:17

The rich young man was what we call today a “can-do” individual. He was always doing something. First, he ran up to Jesus and knelt before Him. He then asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to share in everlasting life?” (Mk 10:17)  Jesus, recognizing the man’s mindset, accordingly, gave him a list of things to do: the commandments. The young man’s response was another action-oriented one: “I have kept all these. Check those off of my to-do list” (see Mk 10:20).  Jesus continued to meet the man right where he was, saying, “There is one thing more you must do” (Mk 10:21). Jesus gave him exactly the answer he wanted — something he could do to prepare his soul to accept Jesus and receive eternal life — but the man “went away sad” (Mk 10:22).

If we base our relationship with Jesus on what we do, then so will Jesus. Remember, Jesus Himself said: “The measure with which you measure will be used to measure you” (Mt 7:2). There will always be one thing more we must do, and “for man it is impossible” (Mk 10:27). When we give our lives to Jesus in loving service, we in effect marry Him. We say, “I do,” as would a bride and groom. Now, our value comes from being in Christ, and we focus on loving and serving Him rather than on impressing Him. He continues to meet us where we are — only now we are in Him, and all is brought to perfection in Him.

You’ll eventually be saying “I do” to Jesus. Which meaning will you choose — marriage or merit?

Prayer: Jesus, Lord, Savior, God, I DO!

Promise: "Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, He Who in His great mercy gave us new birth; a birth unto hope which draws its life from the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." —1 Pt 1:3

SPEAKING SCRIPTURE
"Each man speaks from his heart's abundance." —Luke 6:45

“A man’s speech [discloses] the bent of his mind” (Sir 27:6). What you say reveals what is in your heart. St. Dominic advised to speak only to God or of God. One of the very best ways to learn how to speak as God would have us speak is to immerse ourselves daily in the Word of God. As we daily make our home in the Word of God, that Word then makes its home in us. Our words become His words; our native language more and more becomes “Scripture.” God’s Word fills our heart, and we speak from our heart’s abundance, which is Scripture (see Lk 6:45).

Like Jesus, we say what the Father puts on our heart. Yet we only say what will build the kingdom of God and not tear it down. “We must consider how to rouse each other to love and good deeds” (Heb 10:24). “Never let evil talk pass your lips; say only the good things men need to hear, things that will really help them” (Eph 4:29).

Therefore, beg the Holy Spirit for the grace to “seek eagerly after...the gift of prophecy” (1 Cor 14:1). A prophet speaks what God is saying at the time He is saying it. The Holy Spirit is faithful (1 Thes 5:24), and He will “remind you of all that” the Lord has said (Jn 14:26). Therefore, “do not stifle the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies” (1 Thes 5:19-20). “The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said” (Lk 12:12).

Prayer: Father, through Your Word, teach me "what to say and how to speak" (Jn 12:49).

Promise: "You know that your toil is not in vain when it is done in the Lord." —1 Cor 15:58

Praise: Praise Jesus, risen Lord of my life, my body, and my tongue!

PUBLIC CONFESSION
"Declare your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may find healing." —James 5:16

The Lord clearly commands us to declare our sins to each other. He also commands us not to even mention shameful things (Eph 5:3, 12) and not to publicize others’ sins (see Mt 18:15). However, when we confess certain sins to others, we have difficulties avoiding giving scandal. For example, if you would confess publicly the sin of adultery, the people hearing this would naturally speculate on the identity of the person with whom you were sexually involved. They might be easily able to guess who your sexual partner was, or they might even implicate an innocent person.

How can we obey Jesus’ command to publicly confess our sins without disobeying other commands of Jesus? St. Paul spoke of forgiving as a representative of the Church (2 Cor 2:10). By confessing our sins to a representative of the Church and of the Lord (see Jn 20:21-23; see also Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1455-1456), we can confess our sins publicly, avoid giving scandal, and receive the special healing which usually accompanies public confession.

Go to the sacrament of Reconciliation to confess your sins. Obey Jesus. Be forgiven and healed.

Prayer: Father, may I treasure Confession so much that I celebrate this sacrament monthly or more frequently.

Promise: "People were bringing their little children to Him to have Him touch them." —Mk 10:13

Praise: Margaret treasured Confession much more after not having it available during the COVID-19 shutdown.

JESUS LOVES THE DIVORCED - One Bread, One Body, 02/25/2022

JESUS LOVES THE DIVORCED
"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and the woman who divorces her husband and marries another commits adultery." —Mark 10:11-12

Jesus does not believe in divorce, and He never will (see Heb 13:8). In fact, Jesus hates divorce (Mal 2:16). Of course, this does not mean that He hates those who are divorced. The very reason He hates divorce is because He loves those who are divorced and did not want to see them hurt by divorce.

The Church, as the Body of Christ, has always been true to Jesus, the Head of the Body, and has opposed divorce. In recent decades, some denominations, not in full communion with the Catholic Church, have ignored Jesus’ words forbidding divorce and second marriages. The Catholic Church has recognized that divorce is sometimes not the fault of divorced persons, but something imposed on them by their spouses. In this case, those divorced are not rejecting Jesus’ prohibition of divorce but are victims of injustice. The Catholic Church has also realized that not every marriage is a marriage by God’s standards. Therefore, some second marriages are actually first and only marriages by God’s standards. However, individuals should not discern that for themselves. The Church alone has that responsibility.

Taking into account these clarifications, as Christians we must oppose divorce and second marriages. We must say, do, and love as Jesus does.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the divorced who have unilaterally been faithful to their marriage vows.

Promise: "You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and have seen what the Lord, Who is compassionate and merciful, did in the end." —Jas 5:11

Praise: Joseph met his wife in a support group for divorced persons after their first marriages were annulled.

MAIN-LINE
"If your foot is your undoing, cut it off!" —Mark 9:45

Jesus commands us to gouge out an eye or cut off a hand or foot under two circumstances. Jesus does not mean for us to literally maim ourselves, but He emphasizes that we should go to great extremes to resist temptations, especially temptations to sin sexually (Mt 5:28-29) or to oppose the ministry of another (Mk 9:39-47).

Most of us are surprised by these emphases because we don’t think an impure glance or a negative reaction to the ministry of another the worst sins imaginable. However, we must lay aside our ideas and take on Jesus’ mindset. We must not even mention or allude to sexual sin. Our “holiness forbids this” (Eph 5:3). In addition, we should never hinder, criticize, or gossip about the ministries of other Christians, even if they are based upon a different theological interpretation. We must oppose heresies but always encourage those ministering in the name of Jesus, even if not of our company (Mk 9:38ff). We should be more willing to cut out our tongues and maim our physical bodies than to maim the Body of Christ by saying a discouraging word about another Christian ministry.

Prayer: Father, may I never damage the Body of Christ.

Promise: "God will redeem me from the power of the nether world by receiving me." —Ps 49:16

Praise: "If one member is honored all the members share its joy" (1 Cor 12:26).

SINS OF OMISSION - One Bread, One Body, 02/23/2022

SINS OF OMISSION
"When a man knows the right thing to do and does not do it, he sins." —James 4:17

Sins are not just what we commit but also what we omit. We will be judged not only for what we say (Mt 12:36) but also for what we don’t say (see Ez 3:18; 33:6). We will be judged not only for lending our presence to things that do not glorify God (see 1 Cor 10:31) but also for our absences from the assembly of God’s people (Heb 10:25) and from other works of the Lord.

Before we were created, the Lord prepared a life of good deeds for each of us to do (Eph 2:10). He holds us accountable to do all of these deeds. For example, Jesus warned the church of Sardis: “Wake up, and strengthen what remains before it dies. I find that the sum of your deeds is less than complete” (Rv 3:2).

If you are sinning by omission, repent and cry out for the Lord’s mercy. “He is an Offering for our sins” (1 Jn 2:2). The Lord will forgive. By His grace, we will do the impossible. We will do all that He asks of us. Live your life for Jesus to the full (see Jn 10:10).

Prayer: Father, I put my life in Your hands.

Promise: "Yet in no way can a man redeem himself, or pay his own ransom to God; too high is the price to redeem one's life; he would never have enough to remain alive always and not see destruction." —Ps 49:8-10

Praise: St. Polycarp was a disciple of St. John the Apostle. He was also friends with St. Ignatius of Antioch and taught St. Irenaeus.May we never take for granted the richness of our Catholic faith.

CHRIST’S WAY TO UNITY AND VICTORY - One Bread, One Body, 02/22/2022

CHRIST'S WAY TO UNITY AND VICTORY
"To the elders among you I, a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and sharer in the glory that is to be revealed, make this appeal." —1 Peter 5:1

Today we celebrate the unity which comes from submitting to the authority of the Church through the Pope. Because of their submission to the Pope, Catholics can overcome their personal limitations and cultural blind spots. They can avoid the powerlessness and devastating defeat which accompanies extreme individualism and independence.

In war, a common strategy, which has often been used by Satan, is: “Divide and conquer.” In some of the most critical matters, division and an ensuing defeat can be prevented only by submission to the Pope. Look at the tens of thousands of Christian denominations that do not submit to the authority of the Pope. They have been divided time after time and defeated.

Even within the Catholic Church, we have serious divisions. These seriously impede the Lord’s work through the Church and cause the Church to be defeated in certain areas. If Catholics were Catholic in spirit and not only in name, they would be united in essentials and victorious in the most important aspects of life. One way to determine whether you are Catholic in spirit is to look at areas in which you are united with the Church only because of your submission to the Pope’s authority and not because of your personal convictions. Where have you gone against your conscience because you discovered it was not formed properly, as it was not in accord with the teaching of the Church as expressed by the Pope? Submission to the Church’s authority is the only way to great unity for human beings with our wounded, fallen nature.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the Church, which keeps Satan from exploiting my human weaknesses to cause disunity and defeat.

Promise: "He guides me in right paths for His name's sake." —Ps 23:3

Praise: "You in turn must strengthen your brothers" (Lk 22:32). Pope St. Peter, vicar of Christ, pray for us.

DISGUSTING DISCUSSING - One Bread, One Body, 02/21/2022

DISGUSTING DISCUSSING
"They saw a large crowd standing around, and scribes in lively discussion with them." —Mark 9:14

A boy was possessed by a mute and deaf spirit, but all the religious leaders could do was discuss it. On another occasion, on the afternoon of His Resurrection, the apostles had abandoned the Lord, then Jesus had been crucified, Judas had committed suicide, but the two disciples on the road to Emmaus made small-talk about major happenings (Lk 24:14-15).

“The kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power” (1 Cor 4:20). The “preaching of the gospel” should not be “a mere matter of words for you but one of power” in the Holy Spirit (1 Thes 1:5). St. Paul commanded St. Timothy: “Keep reminding people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about mere words. This does no good and can be the ruin of those who listen” (2 Tm 2:14). “Avoid worldly, idle talk, for those who indulge in it become more and more godless, and the influence of their talk will spread like the plague” (2 Tm 2:16-17).

It’s time to stop talking and start walking. We’ve run on at the mouth too long. The world doesn’t need to hear anymore lip-service from Christians. It’s time to put our money and lives where our mouths are. It’s time to put up or shut up. Let’s stop merely discussing the world’s problems. Let’s win this world for Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Father, may I show the world what You can do.

Promise: "The harvest of justice is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace." —Jas 3:18

Praise: St. Peter Damian was an orphan. One of his brothers was cruel to him, but another brother treated him kindly and paid for his education. Peter later became a Benedictine monk.

THE MANUAL ON LOVING ENEMIES
"To you who hear Me, I say, love your enemies." —Luke 6:27

Loving enemies is more than an attitude. It is expressed in:

  • actions. “Do good to those who hate you” (Lk 6:27).
  • speech. “Bless those who curse you” (Lk 6:28).
  • prayer. “Pray for those who maltreat you” (Lk 6:28).

To love is to reach out — even to enemies. We cannot reach out and at the same time be defensive. Our defensiveness, which is our natural reaction to enemies, must be put aside if we are to reach out to them in love. Therefore, Jesus teaches: “When someone slaps you on one cheek, turn and give him the other” (Lk 6:29). Moreover, when we judge or condemn others, we are reacting to them to justify, protect, and defend ourselves. This defensiveness is incompatible with love. Therefore, the Lord commands us: “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned” (Lk 6:37). Rather, to love our enemies in thought, deed, word, and prayer, we should begin by forgiving and giving. Thus, the Lord commands us: “Pardon, and you shall be pardoned. Give, and it shall be given to you” (Lk 6:37-38).

To love our enemies is one of the best proofs that we are adopted children of God (Mt 5:45). Jesus has given us a detailed explanation of how to love our enemies. Look at the crucified Christ and love accordingly.

Prayer: Father, I accept Your grace now to accept the person offending me the most.

Promise: "The Lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness." —1 Sm 26:23

Praise: Praise You, Jesus! You have been raised in glory forever (Mt 28:6)!

TREMBLING AT HIS WORD
"A cloud came, overshadowing them, and out of the cloud a voice, 'This is My Son, My Beloved. Listen to Him.' " —Mark 9:7

I have been writing One Bread, One Body daily for about twenty years. I have been teaching divine revelation, especially Scripture, for about thirty years. Today the Lord says to me and many of you: “Not many of you should become teachers...you should realize that those of us who do so will be called to the stricter account” (Jas 3:1).

Our speech and other forms of communication are very important, for faith “comes through hearing, and what is heard is the word of Christ” (Rm 10:17). The Lord holds us strictly accountable for every word we speak because He holds us accountable to obey every word we hear from Him. As I write page after page, we read and hear page after page in order to obey word after word from Jesus, Who is the incarnate, eternal Word. Let us be men and women of the Word by abiding in God’s Word (Jn 8:31) through speaking, hearing, and obeying His Word. Although God’s teachers are “judged more strictly,” if hearers of God’s Word disobey and do not repent, they are judged strictly enough to go to hell, to separate themselves from God forever. Therefore, let us be people the Lord approves, the lowly and afflicted ones who tremble at His Word (Is 66:2). Let us speak, hear, and obey God’s Word now as if it is the first, last, or only time to give and receive His Word. Abide in God’s Word.

Prayer: Father, I offer my tongue, ears, heart, and the rest of my body as a living sacrifice to You (Rm 12:1; 6:13).

Promise: "If a person is without fault in speech he is a man in the fullest sense, because he can control his entire body." —Jas 3:2

Praise: Barbara's life changed forever when she finally heard the Word of God with listening ears and heart.

WORKAHOLIC?
"You must perceive that a person is justified by his works and not by faith alone." ––James 2:24

Jesus loves you (Jn 15:9; Eph 5:2). His Word is “living and effective” (Heb 4:12). It’s clear He will not lead us astray. Have you looked lately at judgment passages in the Bible? Our eternal destiny is linked to what we do in this life. It’s not up for debate:

  • Are we ready for our life review? “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, by what they had done” (Rv 20:12, RSV-CE; cf 2 Cor 5:10).
  • Did we neglect to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked and visit the imprisoned? “[Jesus] will answer…‘I assure you, as often as you neglected to do it to one of these least ones, you neglected to do it to Me.’ These will go off to eternal punishment and the just to eternal life” (Mt 25:45-46).
  • Are we deceiving ourselves? “Your hard and impenitent heart is storing up retribution for that day of wrath when the just judgment of God will be revealed, when He will repay every man for what he has done” (Rm 2:5-6; cf 1 Cor 4:3-5).

How will we survive? It’s only because we have a merciful Savior ready to rescue us! “If we acknowledge our sins, He Who is just can be trusted to forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrong” (1 Jn 1:9). Repent!

Prayer: Father, Your grace initiates good works that flow through me. Mold me into Your ever-faithful servant.

Promise: "Whoever would preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will preserve it." ––Mk 8:35

Praise: Fr. Ben serves God as both a priest and a medical doctor.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS
Jesus said: "Who do you say that I am?" —Mark 8:29

Many of you have acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah (Mk 8:29). You have even accepted Him as your Savior. After being overwhelmed by life’s problems, you’re happy to be saved. But who wants a Lord? Who wants to be told what to do and give up getting their own way? Nevertheless, some have even accepted Jesus as Lord.

The next step is to know the Lord so deeply as to recognize He is Lord God. Now we not only obey Him but worship Him. After we acknowledge Jesus as Messiah, Savior, Lord, and God, He begins to teach us about suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection (Mk 8:31). Like Peter, we want to brush off such overwhelming realities (Mk 8:32).

Now we must decide if we will accept a suffering Messiah and crucified Savior. Instinctively, we know that followers of a crucified Lord and God will also be crucified. We must say: “I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal 2:19-20).

Prayer: Jesus, my Lord, my God (Jn 20:28), my crucified God, I worship You.

Promise: "Did not God choose those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom He promised to those who love Him?" —Jas 2:5

Praise: Seven young noblemen, after settling their secular affairs, were inspired to establish the "Ordo Fratrum Servorum Sanctae Mariae." Popularly called the Servites, they devoted themselves to prayer and ministry.

A TIME TO GROW (see Eccl 3:1ff)
"A second time Jesus laid hands on his eyes, and he saw perfectly." —Mark 8:25

In today’s Gospel reading, it took a bit of extra time and a second prayer for the blind man to be fully healed. In tomorrow’s Gospel reading, we will see that St. Peter also needed some time to be fully formed. Through divine inspiration, Peter recognized that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God (Mk 8:29). Shortly afterwards, Peter showed that he still needed more growth, as he allowed the devil to speak through him (Mk 8:33).

In a few years, however, Peter was fully formed and ready to serve as the first pope, the head of the early Church. He was able to preach boldly in public, lead 3,000 people to faith in one day, and perform miraculous healings (Acts 2:14ff; 3:6-8; 5:15-16; 9:33-41).

Are you frustrated with people in your life who have no faith or are not growing in faith as you wish? Today’s readings offer you hope. God is gentle and patient. He forms His people with tender love. He is a divine Potter Who gently molds and transforms people (see Is 64:7; Jer 18:3ff). The Lord often works in hidden ways (Mk 4:23-27). Therefore, “trust in [God] at all times” (Ps 62:9) and never lose heart in prayer (Lk 18:1). Tell the Lord: “I do believe! Help my lack of trust!” (Mk 9:24)

Prayer: Father, not my will but Yours be done (Lk 22:42). Help me to do my part in Your plan and never block Your action.

Promise: Be "slow to anger, for a man's anger does not fulfill God's justice." —Jas 1:19-20

Praise: After dozens of failed attempts, Melanie despaired of ever being free of her addiction to cigarettes. She heard a priest mention in a homily to trust Jesus one more time. She put her trust in the Lord and received freedom from her addiction.

OUR CAPACITY FOR SELF-DECEPTION
"Do you still not understand?" —Mark 8:21

Jesus multiplied five loaves to feed five thousand men and several thousand women and children (Mk 6:38-44). He repeated this miracle on another occasion using seven loaves (Mk 8:5-9). Both times there were more leftovers than the food Jesus started with (Mk 8:19-20). After these two amazing miracles, the Pharisees blindly asked Jesus for a sign (Mk 8:11). Jesus sighed “from the depths of His spirit” (Mk 8:12). Jesus’ disciples were also blind to reality. He questioned them: “Do you still not see or comprehend? Are your minds completely blinded? Have you eyes but no sight? Ears but no hearing?” (Mk 8:17-18)

The obtuseness (see Mk 7:22) and self-deception of the human person is alarming. We can see a miracle right before our eyes and yet miss it completely. We can kill millions of babies in the womb and just pretend, contrary to all biological and scientific data, that they are not really human beings. We can bomb our enemies and say we are really loving them because we are fighting a “just war.” We can stare at pornographic garbage on prime-time TV or our handheld electronic device and call it entertainment. The human capacity for self-deception is terrifying.

We would deceive ourselves all the way to hell but for the grace and light of Jesus. We need Jesus desperately. He alone is the Truth (Jn 14:6).

Prayer: Father, may the Holy Spirit I received at Pentecost open my eyes and lead me to change my life.

Promise: "Happy the man who holds out to the end through trial!" —Jas 1:12

Praise: Mel hiked seventy miles on a holy pilgrimage to grow closer to God. The Lord surprised Mel by introducing him to his future wife during the pilgrimage.

Gaslighting Is Not Real

Introduction: what is gaslighting?

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse in which a manipulator misleads and confuses their victim, causing them to question their own sense of reality. Gaslighting is most commonly used by abusers in order to have more control over the victim. The abuser will often try to convince the victim that they are being too sensitive or paranoid when they question what's been done to them.

Gaslighting is a form of mental abuse where the victim's sense of reality is threatened by a person, making them question their own thoughts and feelings to the point that they are not sure what is real anymore. Gaslighting often begins with subtle but noticeable changes in normal behaviors or routines. These seemingly small changes may be difficult for the victim at first, but gradually become so abusive that it takes over their life.

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse and manipulation that can be dangerous to both psychological and physical wellbeing. The term originates from the 1938 play Gas Light, where the term was used to describe the dimming of gas lights in a house caused by somebody looking for hidden treasure. In this context, it means somebody who psychologically manipulates others into doubting themselves and their judgement, causing them to question their authenticity.

How can you identify gaslighting?

Gaslighting is an extremely manipulative tactic that makes the victim doubt their own perception of reality. Gaslighting can also happen to people who are not victims by accident, but rather by feelings of inadequacy. Gaslighting can present itself in different ways, but it is often done through subtle manipulation, confusing facts or events, and making the victim think they are crazy. It's important to know what to look for so you can identify gaslighting in your life.

Gaslighting is a manipulative tactic that often leaves victims feeling confused, isolated, and ungrounded in their perspective of reality. The abuse can be deliberate or unintentional. Gaslighting usually begins with small actions like occasional comments or the person telling the victim they are wrong about their perception of events to make them feel like they are going crazy.

How does it impact a person's self esteem and social interactions?

Gaslighting is a common form of emotional abuse in which one person, usually in a position of power, tries to manipulate the other person. The abuser constantly pushes the victim's sanity and perception of reality, while convincing them that their thoughts are completely irrational. This kind of manipulation can lead to many side effects on an individual, including low self-esteem and social isolation.

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse that can have a significant impact on a person's self esteem and social interactions. Gaslighting occurs when someone is manipulated into believing they are misremembering, misunderstanding, or overreacting to something. A person who has been gaslighted may have an increased sense of self-doubt, undue sensitivity to social cues, and have trouble relating to others.

Conclusion: how do you stop gaslighting?

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse that makes it difficult for victims to trust their own memory, perception, and sanity. It's hard to comprehend just how difficult gaslighting can be until you've experienced it firsthand, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself and others from gaslighting.

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse that often goes unrecognized by the victim. To stop gaslighting, be aware of your own feelings and what your partner does to make you question them. Take some time for yourself; step away from the situation and try to be objective about it. If you feel like you're being gaslighted, ask a close friend or family member if they see what you're going through.

PURE JOY
"Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I hold to Your promise." —Psalm 119:67

The Bible tells us not only to rejoice in trials but even to “count it pure joy” (Jas 1:2). We’re so happy because tested faith “makes for endurance” (Jas 1:3). This endurance will eventually make us “fully mature and lacking in nothing” (Jas 1:4). We rejoice “in every sort of trial” (Jas 1:2) because we desire maturity more than comfort and pleasure. We desire to serve God and His people powerfully and effectively more than we desire to feel good. Ultimately, we want to be mature because we’re in love with the Lord. Love is stronger than self, fear, pain, suffering, and death. Love overshadows even our most severe trials.

Therefore, rejoice “in the measure that you share Christ’s sufferings. When His glory is revealed, you will rejoice exultantly” (1 Pt 4:13). Take up your daily cross thankfully (Lk 9:23). Find your joy in the suffering you endure for Christ’s Body, the Church (Col 1:24). “For it is your special privilege to take Christ’s part — not only to believe in Him but also to suffer for Him” (Phil 1:29). “There is cause for rejoicing here. You may for a time have to suffer the distress of many trials; but this is so that your faith” may be genuine (1 Pt 1:6-7). Rejoice in the Lord’s love always. “I say it again. Rejoice!” (Phil 4:4)

Prayer: Lord, Your love is better than life (Ps 63:4). I love You.

Promise: "If any of you is without wisdom, let him ask it from the God Who gives generously and ungrudgingly to all, and it will be given him." —Jas 1:5

Praise: Sts. Cyril and Methodius were born in Greece. Cyril was highly educated and Methodius briefly held a governmental position. The pious brothers later answered a call to evangelize the Slavic peoples.

"MAY ALMIGHTY GOD BLESS YOU"
"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law, he meditates day and night." —Psalm 1:1-2, RSV-CE

The Lord says: “I call heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life” (Dt 30:19). The Lord wants to give us a life of blessedness. In fact, He intends to “overwhelm” us with blessings in the city and the country, while going in and coming out, in every way (Dt 28:2ff). Yet we must choose the life of blessing.

We do this by trusting in the Lord rather than in ourselves or others (Jer 17:5, 7). We trust in the Lord by:

  • choosing to be poor in some way (Lk 6:20), to live below our means instead of above our means. Because we tend to depend on material things, voluntary poverty is a perfect environment to choose to trust in God rather than ourselves.
  • choosing to be hungry (Lk 6:20), that is, choosing not to live for maximum pleasure but for maximum holiness. The journey to holiness requires constant trust in God.
  • choosing to weep for our sins (Lk 6:21). If we don’t trust someone, we are probably not that sorry about offending them. Sorrow for sins implies trust in God.
  • choosing to live for the Lord so boldly, radically, and totally that we deserve to be persecuted (Lk 6:22). This is a great act of trust.

A life of blessing is to choose to trust in God deeply. Choose blessing or you will be cursed (Dt 30:19). “May almighty God bless you.”

Prayer: Father, bless me and make me a blessing to all who know me (see Gn 12:2-3).

Promise: "But as it is, Christ is now raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep." —1 Cor 15:20

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, "Author of life" (Acts 3:15).

LEAD LIKE JESUS
"Whoever desired it was consecrated and became a priest of the high places." —1 Kings 13:33

Two leadership styles are contrasted in today’s Mass readings. Jeroboam’s motivation as a leader was self-centered; he wanted to preserve his power (1 Kgs 12:26ff). He had little interest in the welfare of his people. In contrast, Jesus was motivated by a selfless compassion for His people, concerned for their welfare rather than His own convenience (Mk 8:2ff).

Jeroboam believed that if he made worship convenient for the people, they would “forget” true worship of God and focus on convenience. Jesus focused on pleasing His Father and leading His people to a deeper knowledge of the kingdom of God by His teaching and preaching. Yet He also cared about satisfying legitimate human needs, such as hunger (Mk 8:6ff).

Each of us is called to leadership in some way, whether big or small. Authentic Christian leaders are called by the Lord to lay down their lives for their sheep (see 1 Jn 3:16). Will we focus on pleasing the Father and leading as Jesus leads? Will we die to ourselves and take up the cross of leadership? (see Lk 9:23) Will we decrease so that Jesus can increase? (Jn 3:30)

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever You must in order that You may do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "The people in the crowd ate until they had their fill." —Mk 8:8

Praise: Marsha and Curt took on the leadership of a large Catholic conference as an act of sacrificial faith. God enabled them to serve in this way for over a decade. This strengthened their faith and marriage as they ministered together to thousands of people.

RICHES TO RAGS
"I will tear away the kingdom from Solomon's grasp and will give you ten of the tribes." —1 Kings 11:31

Solomon was the wisest man in the world. He built the temple to be the eighth wonder of the world. He was so wealthy as to attract worldwide recognition. His subjects expected Solomon to lead Israel into the international prominence prophesied of the Davidic dynasty. However, that was dramatically changed.

“The Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will tear away the kingdom from Solomon’s grasp’ ” (1 Kgs 11:31). Solomon’s kingdom was soon divided and his descendants were left with one tribe of Israel (1 Kgs 11:32). What happened? Solomon sinned. He fell into idolatry and put other things ahead of God. He put his wives and concubines ahead of God, and his heart was turned away from the Lord (1 Kgs 11:2-3).

You are greater than Solomon. The least born into Christ’s kingdom is greater than he (Mt 11:11). God has called you to inherit an eternal dynasty. By sinning, will you ruin your future and eternity? Or will you receive your promised inheritance? Repent. Go to Confession. Resist sin even “to the point of shedding” your own blood (Heb 12:4).

Prayer: Jesus, may I die rather than commit any sin.

Promise: "He said to him, 'Ephphatha!' (that is, 'Be opened!') At once the man's ears were opened; he was freed from the impediment and began to speak plainly." —Mk 7:34-35

Praise: Franz, a Jewish author, passed through Lourdes while escaping the Nazis. He made a vow to write a novel about the miracle of Our Lady of Lourdes. He went to America where he wrote and published his novel.

A WARNING TO MIDDLE-AGED HEARTS
"When Solomon was old...his heart was not entirely with the Lord." —1 Kings 11:4

King Solomon started his reign as “a mere youth” (1 Kgs 3:7). Young Solomon started well as king. He humbly asked God for wisdom to govern well and built the Temple so the Lord could be fittingly worshipped. But “when he was old,” Solomon’s heart was no longer entirely with the Lord (1 Kgs 11:4). How old was Solomon when his heart turned away from God? Numerous estimates believe he died in his early sixties.

This is a stark warning to those of us in our forties and fifties. We may feel we are just reaching our peak. King David, father of Solomon, may have felt similarly. Yet David’s downfall also began in his middle-age years. David relaxed at home while his soldiers fought his battles (2 Sm 11:1). In his idleness, David succumbed to the temptations of adultery and murder (2 Sm 11:2-17). The mid-life sins of Kings David and Solomon sowed the seeds for the downfall of both their families and the nation of Israel.

A great cost is paid when our middle-aged hearts are no longer entirely with the Lord. St. Paul warns: “Your thoughts may be corrupted and you may fall away from your sincere and complete devotion to Christ” (2 Cor 11:3). We may think in our middle age that, after decades of hard work, we have earned a break. Scripture warns: “Already you have devoted enough time to what the pagans enjoy” (1 Pt 4:3). Repent of any desires to find rest apart from the Lord. “Come to Me,” says the Lord, “and you will find rest for your souls” (see Mt 11:28-29).

Prayer: Jesus, change anything in me so I may be all Yours.

Promise: "Happy are they who observe what is right, who always do what is just." —Ps 106:3

Praise: There is only one "Holy Family," but the Catholic Church has produced countless holy families: St. Scholastica is the twin sister of St. Benedict. Praise the Lord!

RECOGNIZE TRUE RICHES OR LOSE EVERYTHING
"When the queen of Sheba witnessed Solomon's great wisdom, the palace he had built, the food at his table, the seating of his ministers, the attendance and garb of his waiters, his banquet service, and the holocausts he offered in the temple of the Lord, she was breathless." —1 Kings 10:4-5

Christians are the wealthiest people in the world (see Eph 1:18). Yet what does that mean? Some Christians have been given a heavy responsibility of stewardship. The Lord has given them extensive material wealth to be distributed according to His specific directions. Such was the breathtaking wealth of Solomon.

All Christians have been given an awesome inheritance in the “unfathomable riches of Christ” (Eph 3:8). These are interior riches. Some of these riches are to be “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4), love, compassion, justice, and many other virtues, charisms, and graces of the Holy Spirit.

Frequently, spiritual riches are not recognized as valuable. Because of this sinful failure, some people gain worldly success and lose their immortal souls (see Lk 9:25). However, other people lose their lives for love of Jesus and paradoxically gain their lives (Lk 9:24) and the ultimate riches of eternal life in heaven.

All Christians are rich (Rv 2:9). But what are true riches? Which riches can you take with you after death? How can we store up riches in heaven? (Mt 6:20) Everything is at stake on how we live the answer to these questions. Be rich in God’s eyes (cf Lk 12:21).

Prayer: Father, make me wise in the area of wealth so that I may accept Your salvation on Your terms.

Promise: Jesus "summoned the crowd again and said to them, 'Hear Me, all of you, and try to understand.' " —Mk 7:14

Praise: John, a lawyer, has devoted his legal career to the defense of pro-life causes.

THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR LOVE FOR GOD
"Empty is the reverence they do Me." —Mark 7:7

The Lord made Solomon the wisest man in the world (1 Kgs 3:12). Solomon used his wisdom to build the temple of the Lord. Solomon was awed by God’s work in his life (see 1 Kgs 8:27). Sadly, Solomon’s heart did not remain with the Lord (1 Kgs 11:9). He died trapped in idolatrous abominations, alienated from the Lord.

David, Solomon’s father, also received exceptional graces from the Lord. His heart was with the Lord (see Acts 13:22). To express his love for the Lord, David composed and sang many of the psalms. However, David committed adultery and murder (2 Sm 11:1ff). Obviously, despite David’s devotion to the Lord, he had something very wrong in his relationship with the Lord. Yet David did repent and died in the Lord’s love.

The lives of Solomon and David show that we can deceive ourselves about the quality and depth of our relationship with the Lord. While we honor the Lord externally, our hearts may be far from Him (Mk 7:6). We need the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, to guide us to all truth about the authenticity and purity of our relationship with the Lord (see Jn 16:13). We need the Holy Spirit to prove us wrong about any compromises we have made with the ways of the world (Jn 16:8). Come, Holy Spirit of truth and love!

Prayer: Father, may I never be unfaithful to You.

Promise: "You keep Your covenant of kindness with Your servants who are faithful to You with their whole heart." —1 Kgs 8:23

OFFER HIM REST
"Advance, O Lord, to Your resting place." —Psalm 132:8

In today’s first reading and Psalm, the Lord journeys to His place of rest in the newly finished Temple in Jerusalem. God confirms His acceptance of the Temple as a suitable dwelling by the presence of the cloud which fills the Temple. The cloud had been the sign of God’s presence for forty years in the Exodus and the wandering of the Israelites through the desert. Now His presence dwells within the ark of the covenant inside the Temple.

Then God sent His only Son into the world (Jn 3:16). In the New Covenant, God’s presence dwelt on the earth through Jesus (see Jn 1:14; Heb 1:3). How ironic then that Jesus had no place to rest during His public ministry, no place to lay His head (see Lk 9:58). Jesus was frequently on the move, in boats, villages, desert places, and other such wanderings.

At the end of His life, Jesus took His earthly dwelling place to a new level: He has chosen to dwell in us! After ascending into heaven, Jesus remains with His people through His real presence in the Holy Eucharist. When we receive His Body and Blood in the Eucharist, Jesus now dwells in us and “remains in” us (see Jn 6:56). We become walking tabernacles of His presence. Jesus lives in us to such an extent that He assures us: “Anyone who loves Me will be true to My word, and My Father will love him; We will come to him and make Our dwelling place with him” (Jn 14:23).

When Jesus was born, there was no place for Him, Joseph, or Mary to find rest (see Lk 2:7). Let us change our lives in order to prepare our hearts to be a resting place for Jesus. “Advance, O Lord, to Your resting place” (Ps 132:8), my heart.

Prayer: Lord, here I am. Rearrange my life as You see fit and make Your home in me.

Promise: "All who touched [Jesus] got well." —Mk 6:56

Praise: Reaching age 30, Lynn despaired of ever finding a godly husband, but she devoted herself to serving God in her parish. The Lord then put directly in her path a loving man to marry her.
