APOSTLES OF LOVE
"Through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message." —Psalm 19:5

Christians are living in love (Jn 15:9-10) with God Who is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). Impelled by love (2 Cor 5:14), we publicly “confess with [our] lips that Jesus is Lord” and Love (Rm 10:9). We are not ashamed of the Good News of God’s love, although it is crucified love (Rm 1:16). Love is to be expressed and shared — no matter what the consequences in a hateful world (see Prv 27:5). In God’s love, we are bound to overturn this culture of death and replace it with “a civilization of love,” as Pope St. Paul VI prophesied in 1970.

In love, let us be witnesses for Jesus (Acts 1:8) and make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19). Let us speak boldly, freely, and openly of Christ’s love (see Eph 6:19-20). Let us be like St. Andrew, who immediately after becoming Jesus’ disciple invited his brother, Simon, to do the same (Jn 1:41). Let us be like St. Andrew, who proclaimed God’s love to the nations and was crucified in imitation of Jesus’ crucified love.

Our beginning and our end is Love. Our mission and our message is Love. Our life and our death is Love. Abide in Love; abide in God (1 Jn 4:16).

Prayer: Father, may I "grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love" (Eph 3:18-19).

Promise: Jesus "called them, and immediately they abandoned boat and father to follow Him." —Mt 4:22

Praise: "One of the two who had followed Him after hearing John was Simon Peter's brother Andrew. The first thing he did was seek out his brother Simon and tell him, 'We have found the Messiah!' " (Jn 1:40-41)

JESUS' SENSE OF HUMOR
"Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit." —Luke 10:21

Jesus must have laughed frequently throughout His life on earth, but we have no record of this in the Gospels. Jesus may have been laughing when He exulted in the Holy Spirit (Lk 10:21) after proclaiming that His disciples’ names were written in heaven (Lk 10:20). As He rejoiced, He praised His Father for revealing to the merest children what He had hidden from the learned and the clever (Lk 10:21).

Jesus has a sense of humor different than most of us have. We rejoice and laugh for many reasons but usually not for names written in heaven and mysteries concealed from some and revealed to others. We need to “acquire a fresh, spiritual way of thinking” (Eph 4:23), to take on the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16), and to have His attitude (Phil 2:5). In so doing, we will laugh when He laughs, rejoice when He rejoices, and cry when He cries.

May each of us be able to say: “I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me” (Gal 2:19-20). When we sense His presence in us, we will have His sense of humor.

Prayer: Father, beginning this Advent, may the old jokes turn me off and Your new life inspire me.

Promise: "The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him: a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a Spirit of counsel and of strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord, and His delight shall be the fear of the Lord." —Is 11:2-3

Praise: Looking back on his sinful past, Thomas can laugh now at his foolishness and rejoice in God's incredible mercy.

CHRISTMAS ORDERS
"I am not worthy to have You under my roof. Just give an order." —Matthew 8:8

On this second day of Advent, we must be careful to get off to a good start. We need to come to the Lord, to Mass, to prayer, and to repentance when the Lord orders us to “come” (see Mt 8:9). We also need to do good, do justice (Is 1:17), and do His will when Jesus commands us: “Do this” (see Mt 8:9). Jesus is God and He alone knows how to prepare us for His special coming this Christmas. Consequently, with the centurion we should say to Jesus: “Just give an order” (Mt 8:8).

It’s so easy to let Advent slip away and become so distracted and self-absorbed at Christmas time that we miss Christ’s coming. The Church has had centuries of Advents. It has learned (often the hard way) that the Lord has decided to make Advent necessary for us to get ready to meet Him. So let us ask the Lord what His will is for us this Advent. Let us obey the Lord more carefully than we would obey a corporation paying us millions of dollars or a doctor trying to save our lives if we were critically ill.

Christ’s coming this Christmas is more important than profit or health. Seek to find God’s orders for you this Advent. Then obey Him carefully (see Rm 6:17).

Prayer: Jesus, Good Shepherd, lead me to a Christmas encounter with You.

Promise: "The branch of the Lord will be luster and glory, and the fruit of the earth will be honor and splendor." —Is 4:2

Praise: An adult convert, Luis is so very thankful for each and every reception of the Eucharist.

"READY TO GREET HIM WHEN HE COMES"
"You must be prepared in the same way. The Son of Man is coming at the time you least expect." —Matthew 24:44

Happy Advent! Advent is about the three comings of Christ:

1)      Jesus first came to earth as a Baby, humble and lowly, at Bethlehem (Lk 2:4ff).

2)      Jesus will come again at His Second Coming on the last day (Mt 24:30-31). This coming will be as majestic as His first coming was humble (1 Thes 4:16; Lk 21:27).

3)      The third coming of Jesus is the coming of the Eucharistic Jesus into our souls today. Jesus’ coming in Holy Communion is a humble coming, just as He came humbly to earth in Bethlehem. His Eucharistic coming is as easy to miss as was His coming at Bethlehem.

How prepared are we to meet the Eucharistic Jesus when He comes to us today? If we’re prepared for this “third” coming, we’ll welcome His first coming at Christmas and be prepared for His Second Coming.

Therefore, on this first day of the new Church Year, this day of new beginning, invite Jesus to come and reign in your life. “Seek first His kingship over you” (Mt 6:33). Be “sober and alert” (1 Pt 5:8), ever ready to greet Him when He comes. Live so that Jesus may never have to ask: “Why was no one there when I came?” (Is 50:2)

Prayer: Father, may I prepare for the coming of Christ more than I would prepare for the most famous person on earth visiting my home.

Promise: "It is now the hour for you to wake from sleep, for our salvation is closer than when we first accepted the faith." —Rm 13:11

Praise: "For You have rescued me from death, my feet, too, from stumbling; that I may walk before God in the light of the living" (Ps 56:14, NAB). Alleluia! Praise You, risen Jesus.

ASLEEP WITH ANXIETY?
"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap." —Luke 21:34-35, RNAB

Jesus connects two very different things in today’s Gospel passage: drowsiness and anxieties (Lk 21:34, RNAB). Generally, anxiety would seem to be associated with sleeplessness rather than drowsiness. Cares and worries tend to keep us awake rather than lull us to sleep.  Yet Jesus, in His wisdom, links anxiety with spiritual slumber. He classifies anxiety as a drug that blinds us to the need for spiritual preparation.

When Jesus told the parable of the soil and the Word of God, He specifically classified the third type of soil as choked off by the “anxieties over life’s demands” and “it bears no yield” (Mk 4:19). Anxiety over daily cares does not lead to spiritual preparation; rather, anxiety leads to spiritual paralysis and stupor in the same way as does drunkenness (Lk 21:34). Anxiety, like fear, is the opposite of faith, and “fear is useless. What is needed is trust” (Mk 5:36).

“Dismiss all anxiety from your minds” (Phil 4:6). Trust God to supply your needs (Mt 6:25-34; Phil 4:19). Be still and know that He is God (Ps 46:11).

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to end this Church year by trusting You as does a little child (Ps 131:2).

Promise: "Happy the man who heeds the prophetic message of this book!" —Rv 22:7

Praise: Linda accepted the Holy Spirit's gift of prophecy, and now uses it to lead others to intercede for the world.

LOSING YOUR HEAD
"I also saw the spirits of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and the word of God, those who had never worshiped the beast or its image nor accepted its mark on their foreheads or their hands." ––Revelation 20:4

We are a Church founded upon martyrs. Archaeology shows the spread of the early Church can be traced by following the relics of saints, and martyrs were the most honored of the saints. Altars were often constructed over their bones.

St. Stephen demonstrated the power of martyrdom with his Christ-like witness (see Acts 7:59-60). Stephen’s faithfulness influenced “a young man named Saul” (Acts 7:58), who was present at the murder scene. Saul went on to become St. Paul, one of the Church’s greatest evangelists (see Acts 9:4-6).

The Apostle St. James, one of the Church’s twelve foundation stones (see Rv 21:14; cf Eph 2:20), won an early crown: “During that period, King Herod started to harass some of the members of the church. He beheaded James the brother of John” (Acts 12:1-2).

In a similar manner, many Old Testament witnesses set an example for trust in God. “They were stoned, sawed in two, put to death at sword’s point; they went about garbed in the skins of sheep or goats, needy, afflicted, tormented. The world was not worthy of them” (Heb 11:37-38).

A select few of us may be called to give our lives for faith in Jesus. However, most reading this won’t. This doesn’t free us from our duty to be witnesses. How does my life proclaim the risen Christ?

Prayer: Father, give me the courage to live and die for You.

Promise: "The heavens and the earth will pass away, but My words will not pass." ––Lk 21:33

Praise: St. Catherine lived in Alexandria, Egypt, during the Fourth Century. She embraced virginity for love of Christ. Her counter-cultural stance inspired many young women; it also earned her martyrdom.

R. S. V. P.
"Happy are they who have been invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb." —Revelation 19:9

Today is a day of Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. Many people are invited to sumptuous feasts with family and friends, and they happily look forward to the Thanksgiving meal. You can imagine the joy of the hosts when their invited guests appear at the door.

God also has prepared a feast today that by comparison makes a Thanksgiving turkey look like a “disgusting bird” (Rv 18:2). In fact, He has also prepared this feast tomorrow, this weekend, and for all eternity. This feast is the ultimate: “the wedding feast of the Lamb” (Rv 19:9). It is celebrated without pause in heaven, and it is celebrated on earth in the Holy Mass.

As with a Thanksgiving meal, it is easy to imagine God eagerly anticipating the arrival of His guests, for “He invited many” (Lk 14:16). Instead of being thrilled at being invited, the guests incredibly begin “to excuse themselves, one and all” (Lk 14:18). Some simply ignore “the invitation and [go] their way” (see Mt 22:5). Many of the guests are more bothered than thankful to be invited.

Let’s happily and thankfully accept God’s invitation and go to Mass today. As we enter the Church for the feast, let us “enter His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise” (Ps 100:4). “Happy are those who are called to His supper!”

Prayer: "I will give thanks to You, O Lord, with all of my heart...I will worship at Your holy temple" (Ps 138:1, 2).

Promise: "When these things begin to happen, stand erect and hold your heads high, for your deliverance is near at hand." —Lk 21:28

Praise: St. Anthony Peter Dich, a Vietnamese farmer who sowed in the seed-ground of the Spirit (Gal 6:8), was beheaded for sheltering Fr. James Nam and now rejoices in God's heavenly Kingdom.

ARMORED CAR - One Bread, One Body, 11/23/2022

ARMORED CAR
"They will manhandle and persecute you." —Luke 21:12

Jesus tells us we will be delivered up even by our parents, brothers, relatives, and friends (Lk 21:16). This will result in some of us being put to death. Jesus has made it very clear that, before there can be peace, there will be division in families. “A household of five will be divided three against two and two against three; father will be split against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law” (Lk 12:52-53).

Our families will be under extreme pressure in the future and severely tried. Jesus reveals the future not to discourage us but to encourage us to plan accordingly in the present. For example, if we were building a car and we knew this car would be driven through a crossfire of bullets, we would build an armored car. So, if we’re building a family and we know this family will be attacked by the devil, then we will build an “armored family.” “Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil” (Eph 6:11). “You must put on the armor of God if you are to resist on the evil day” (Eph 6:13). On Thanksgiving Day, many of us will be gathering with our families. We can engage in superficialities, keep quiet about Jesus, and pray by ourselves. Or we can ask the Spirit to work through us in building strong, deeply committed, holy families. Would you talk to your family differently if you knew they might betray you?

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to give me a realistic view of my family's future. May I build my family for the future spiritual warfare.

Promise: "I then saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire. On the sea of glass were standing those who had won the victory over the beast." —Rv 15:2

THE LAST GOSPEL
"What will be the sign that it is going to happen?" —Luke 21:7

Though no one knows the day when the world will end and Christ will come again, the Lord has given us many of the last events on earth. The following is a partial list in a probable order:

1)      “This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world...only after that will the end come” (Mt 24:14).

2)      “All Israel will be saved” (Rm 11:26).

3)      Then, “they will manhandle and persecute” Christians (Lk 21:12). “All will hate” us for our faith in Jesus (Lk 21:17).

4)      “Many will come” in Jesus’ name “saying, ‘I am He’ and ‘The time is at hand.’ Do not follow them” (Lk 21:8).

5)      “The mass apostasy” will occur (2 Thes 2:3), and “the love of most will grow cold” (Mt 24:12).

6)      You will “hear of wars...These things are bound to happen first, but the end does not follow immediately” (Lk 21:9).

7)      “There will be great earthquakes, plagues, and famines...and in the sky fearful omens and great signs” (Lk 21:11). “These are the early stages of the birth pangs” (Mt 24:8).

8)      “The lawless one will be revealed, and the Lord Jesus will destroy him...by manifesting His own presence” (2 Thes 2:8).

9)      “The heavens will vanish with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire” (2 Pt 3:10).

10) “The Lord Himself will come down from heaven...and those who have died in Christ will rise first. Then we, the living, the survivors, will...meet the Lord” (1 Thes 4:16-17).

11) “When the Son of Man comes in His glory...He will sit upon His royal throne, and all the nations will be assembled before Him” (Mt 25:31; Rv 14:14ff).

12) We who have loved God faithfully “shall be with [Him] unceasingly” (1 Thes 4:17) and “see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3:2).

“Console one another with this message” (1 Thes 4:18).

Prayer: Lord, I want to be ready.

Promise: "He comes to rule the earth." —Ps 96:13

Praise: St. Cecilia is the patron of musicians and poets.

THE NEW SONG
"They were singing a new hymn before the throne, in the presence of the four living creatures and the elders. This hymn no one could learn except the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been ransomed from the world." —Revelation 14:3

Only those in heaven can sing the new song of the Lamb. Only those baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit can sing the new song (Mt 28:19). They alone sing the new song who are so immersed in the Holy Trinity that they are branded on their foreheads with the names of the Father and the Son (Rv 14:1). Only those begotten and owned by God sing the new song. They “are pure and follow the Lamb wherever He goes” (Rv 14:4).

To sing the new song means to live the new life in Christ, to love Him with all our hearts, and to “bless the Lord at all times” (Ps 34:2). To sing the new song means to be a people of praise because we are a people of love. To love and to praise the Lord means that we have been purified by obedience to the truth (1 Pt 1:22). This means we have been saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8) and have been created “to lead the life of good deeds which God prepared for us in advance” (Eph 2:10).

Forever sing the new song of salvation and live the new life of love, praise, purification, and obedience. By faith with good works (see Jas 2:21-22), accept the grace to sing the new song.

Prayer: Father, teach me how to praise You always and forever.

Promise: "This poor widow has put in more than all the rest. They make contributions out of their surplus, but she from her want has given what she could not afford — every penny she had to live on." —Lk 21:3-4

Praise: Mary was presented to God in the Temple by her parents and she presents us, her children, to our Father.

(Today is our patronal feast. To learn more about The Presentation Story, view, download or order our booklet on our website.)

THE CRUCIFIX AND THE KING - One Bread, One Body, 11/20/2022

THE CRUCIFIX AND THE KING
"There was an inscription over His head: 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' " —Luke 23:38

Many people have crucifixes on their walls, in their pockets, in their purses, or around their necks. Usually at the top of this crucifix are the letters I. N. R. I. This stands for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” On Calvary, hardly anyone believed this inscription. In fact, “the chief priests of the Jews tried to tell Pilate...‘This man claimed to be King of the Jews’ ” (Jn 19:21).

What about you? Do you believe the letters on your crucifix? Or are the letters I.N.R.I. just an inscription to which you’ve never paid any attention? If you decide to take your crucifix seriously and be a faithful subject of King Jesus, you must:

  • be rescued “from the power of darkness” (Col 1:13),
  • repent,
  • contradict leaders, soldiers, criminals, and the many people who continue to mock His kingship (Lk 23:35, 36, 39),
  • be willing to be persecuted,
  • worship King Jesus, for He is the King of kings (Rv 19:16) and God Himself, and
  • tell everyone about the perfect King, Who is God and Love (see 1 Jn 4:16).

Are you willing to accept Jesus as your King? If so, kneel down before Him now and give Your most precious gifts to Him (see Mt 2:11). Give your whole life to King Jesus. Start talking to Jesus. Ask Him to show you Who He is. Begin to repent. Keep talking to Jesus until you can again honestly see or carry a crucifix not out of habit but out of love.

Prayer: King Jesus, I bend my knee and will to Your will and kingdom (see Phil 2:10).

Promise: "In [Jesus] everything continues in being." —Col 1:17

Praise: "Sing praise to God, sing praise; Sing praise to our King, sing praise. For King of all the earth is God; sing hymns of praise" (Ps 47:7-8, NAB).

"BADLY MISLED"? (Mk 12:24)
"Moses in the passage about the bush showed that the dead rise again..." —Luke 20:37

It is possible to read Scripture for years and completely miss what the Word of God is saying. The Sadducees, who attempted to trap Jesus in today’s Gospel passage, were a strict sect of Judaism which accepted only the first five books of the Scriptures, called the Pentateuch. The Sadducees also “claim there is no resurrection” (Lk 20:27). Jesus in His wisdom used a Scripture passage from the few books the Sadducees did accept (Ex 3:6) to show that there is a resurrection (Lk 20:37).

The Sadducees, who had spent their lives reading the Pentateuch, never noticed this connection to eternal life and resurrection. So they steadfastly maintained that there was no resurrection. The Sadducees put their religious ideas first and attempted to make the Scriptures support their ideas. Jesus therefore told the Sadducees: “You are badly misled, because you fail to understand the Scriptures or the power of God...You are very much mistaken” (Mk 12:24, 27).

If we honestly seek the Lord, Jesus will open our minds to the understanding of the Scriptures (Lk 24:45). Are we open to God’s Word? Or do our ideas come first, and we thus pick and choose Bible verses to support them? If so, we may be in danger of being “badly misled” (Mk 12:24). Let the Living Word (Heb 4:12-13) speak to you. Allow God’s Word to form your mind.

Prayer: Father, transform me through the renewal of my mind (Rm 12:2). Each day, give me open, obedient ears to hear and understand Your Word (Ps 40:7).

Promise: "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war." —Ps 144:1

Praise: Jack shares the story of his conversion from atheist to Christian minister with nationwide audiences in order to make known the realities of heaven and hell.

HANGING ON - One Bread, One Body, 11/18/2022

HANGING ON
Jesus "was teaching in the temple area from day to day. The chief priests and scribes meanwhile were looking for a way to destroy Him, as were the leaders of the people, but they had no idea how to achieve it, for indeed the entire populace was listening to Him and hanging on His words." —Luke 19:47-48

Jesus was teaching in the temple area each day, even at the risk of His life (Lk 19:47). The people found His teaching sweet to their taste (see Rv 10:9-10). They were hanging on His words (Lk 19:48); to them, His words tasted sweeter than honey from the comb (Ps 119:103).

The fact that the people were hanging on Jesus’ words basically guaranteed that Jesus would likewise soon be hanging, nailed to a cross. If the people did not pay attention to Jesus’ teaching, the chief priests and scribes and the leaders of the people (Lk 19:47) would not have been jealous of Jesus and would possibly have left Him alone.

This is the consequence of the sweetness of the Word of God: it will turn sour in the stomach of those who proclaim it (Rv 10:9) — the sour taste of persecution that comes with being faithful to sharing the Word of God (Ez 3:1-4; Rv 10:9-10). Nevertheless, hang on to the promises of God. Feed God’s people by teaching them His Word (Jn 21:15-17).

Prayer: Father, I will consume the scroll of Your Word. Make me a servant of Your Word, no matter the cost.

Promise: "The law of Your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces." —Ps 119:72

SOUNDING, SMELLING, AND FLYING PRAYERS
"Along with their harps, the elders were holding vessels of gold filled with aromatic spices, which were the prayers of God's holy people." —Revelation 5:8

John called the prayers of God’s people “aromatic spices,” that is, incense. Figuratively speaking, our prayers have a pleasing smell, are surrounded by others’ prayers, and rise to God. Our prayers sound, smell, and move. Moreover, our prayers are contained in “vessels of gold” (Rv 5:8). Because what a container holds is usually more valuable than the container, our prayers are said to be more valuable than golden vessels.

Our precious prayers are held by the elders, that is, the leaders of the Church, who have fallen down in adoration before Jesus, the Lamb (Rv 5:8). Our prayers are in the context of submission to the Church, which is in submission to Jesus. The elders of the Church are holding our prayers in one hand and holding harps in the other (Rv 5:8). This shows that our prayers are always in the context of the heavenly praises.  We are all members of the communion of saints.

When we understand the context of prayer, when we see prayer in all its heavenly glory, we come to the conclusion that there is “the necessity of praying always and not losing heart” (Lk 18:1). Pray!

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to help me to pray in my weakness (Rm 8:26).

Promise: "Sing to the Lord a new song of praise in the assembly of the faithful." —Ps 149:1

Praise: St. Elizabeth had such great love for the poor and suffering that she is the patron saint of Catholic Charities and the Secular Franciscan Order.

SERVE THE KING OF KINGS
"We will not have this man rule over us." —Luke 19:14

The evil in the world is so massively powerful and well-funded that despair and discouragement are natural reactions. Worldly people hate the Lord and will not accept His kingdom in secular society (Jn 15:18ff). They oppose the Kingdom of God with all their strength.

In today’s Gospel parable, Jesus proclaims that He understands this worldly opposition, prophesied by Simeon while He was just a Baby (Lk 2:34). This coming Sunday is the Feast of “Christ the King, Lord of the Universe.” If King Jesus chose, He could crush evil underfoot in a moment. Yet when Jesus had that chance, He did not crush evil in worldly strength (Jn 18:36). Rather, Jesus crushed evil in the ultimate spiritual war; He destroyed the devil’s works (1 Jn 3:8).

Jesus said: “It is much better for you that I go” (Jn 16:7). Mysteriously, where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more (see Rm 5:20). Allow King Jesus to reign over you as He sees fit. Serve King Jesus faithfully and with confidence.

Prayer: King Jesus, we do want You to rule over us. "Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (Mt 6:10).

Promise: "O Lord our God, You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power! For You have created all things; by Your will they came to be and were made!" —Rv 4:11

Praise: "She was an exceptional woman, endowed with special natural talents and extraordinary gifts of grace" (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, commenting on St. Gertrude the Great, October 6, 2010).

JESUS SEEKS THE LOST
"The Son of Man has come to search out and save what was lost." —Luke 19:10

Jesus has an extraordinary ability to point out sins, but He does so in such a way that people are happy to repent, do penance, restore damages, and then have fellowship with Him. Notorious sinners such as Matthew and Zacchaeus were happy to be with Jesus (see Mt 9:9-10; Lk 19:6). It’s still the same today (Heb 13:8).

Jesus draws all people to Himself (Jn 12:32). Sinners throughout the ages have been so happy to receive the love and mercy of Jesus that they gladly repented and believed. Jesus does not ignore sin and sinners (Jn 8:11). Rather, He lifts them from the swamp of sin and raises them to the joys of new, risen life with Him.

Jesus intentionally seeks the lost and sinful people of this world (Lk 19:10). He is the Good Shepherd Who leaves the safety and comfort of the sheepfold to search for the lost and wounded (Lk 15:1ff). Jesus stands knocking at the door of our heart (Rv 3:20).

Jesus is not soft on sin. He is direct and challenging, but His touch makes a sinner welcome His intervention. Jesus is knocking on your door. “Be earnest about it, therefore. Repent!” (Rv 3:19)

Prayer: Jesus, give me the grace to always open wide the door of my heart to Your knocking (2 Cor 6:13).

Promise: "I know the reputation you have of being alive, when in fact you are dead! Wake up, and strengthen what remains before it dies." —Rv 3:1-2

SEEING HEALINGS
"Receive your sight. Your faith has healed you." —Luke 18:42

Many Christians in our secular humanistic culture have been programmed to have reservations about Jesus’ healings. They wonder whether Jesus really did all those healings. Even if they believe He did, they doubt whether He still does such things. They think that things are different now, and of course, they are right. Now we can’t talk to Jesus standing right in front of us, and we can’t audibly hear His voice. Things are different for us than for those who walked and talked with Jesus.

However, these differences do not mean that Jesus heals less but that He heals more. Jesus said that it is better for us that He go (Jn 16:7). After Jesus ascended, He and the Father sent the Holy Spirit (see Jn 16:7-8). Filled with the Spirit, those who believe in Jesus can do works greater than Jesus ever did (Jn 14:12). Jesus began the New Testament healing ministry; He did not end it. Therefore, we can live in the golden age of healing. But we must first let Jesus open our eyes to see His greater healings and greater glory shining through the New Testament Church (see 2 Cor 3:9).

Lord, “I want to see” (Lk 18:41).

Prayer: Father, may I begin to see things the way You see them.

Promise: "I hold this against you, though: you have turned aside from your early love. Keep firmly in mind the heights from which you have fallen. Repent, and return to your former deeds." —Rv 2:4-5

DEFENSE ATTORNEY
"I bid you resolve not to worry about your defense beforehand." —Luke 21:14

Doesn’t the Word of God say to be ever ready to give a reply to those who question you about why you live a life of faith? (1 Pt 3:15) The Holy Spirit is the Paraclete (Jn 14:26), a term which can be translated as “Attorney for the Defense.” Since the Holy Spirit is our Defense Attorney, we are actually stifling the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19) if we try to take over the Spirit’s job. Let the Spirit prepare your defense. You need only to be His witness when called upon.

The Holy Spirit will remind us of all He taught us in advance (Jn 14:26; 16:13). The Spirit will teach us “what to say and how to speak” (Jn 12:49). The Spirit will do a far better job of defending us than we can ever do. So we can instead spend our time thanking and praising Him, and listening to His words. Then we can let God do His job. Our business is simply to follow Him (Jn 21:19).

It’s the daily life of faith that prepares us. We can’t think of all the ways others will challenge us, but the Spirit knows this in advance. When we are living in the Spirit and in a life of faithful prayer with a well-formed conscience, then whatever the Spirit brings to mind is what He wants said. Even with an incomplete formation of conscience, if we are docile to the Spirit, He has the power to bring the proper words to our mind.

Offer your life to God as a living sacrifice; then the Holy Spirit will renew and transform your mind (Rm 12:1-2).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, open my ears to hear Your voice, and open my lips to speak Your words.

Promise: "By patient endurance you will save your lives." —Lk 21:19

Praise: "The night shall be no more. They will need no light from lamps or the sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign forever" (Rv 22:5). Praise the risen Jesus!

DO NOT LOSE HEART (Lk 18:1) - One Bread, One Body, 11/12/2022

DO NOT LOSE HEART (Lk 18:1)
"This widow is wearing me out." —Luke 18:5

If the unjust judge, who tends toward evil, and who simply wants the powerless widow to go away, will relent and render her justice (Lk 18:3-5), how much more will the Just Judge, the Lord, act rightly.

We give the forces of evil so much credit. Evil strongholds seem indestructible to us (see Nm 13:31-33; 1 Sm 17:11). Yet evil is prone to imploding and bringing about its own destruction (see e.g. Jgs 7:19-22). The kingdom of God will outlast the forces of evil and emerge victorious (see 1 Jn 4:4). Even if we, God’s soldiers, wear out, God will protect His property (Ps 46:6).

Jesus wonders if there will be any faith when He returns (Lk 18:8). In the context of this parable, Jesus is also wondering if He will find any persistence at the time of His return. Be the answer to Jesus’ search for faith.

“Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1). Persevere. Persist. Have confident faith in His power and loving-kindness. Do not lose heart (Lk 18:1).

Prayer: Lord, "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5). Give us a steadfast, persevering, persistent faith to defeat the forces of evil.

Promise: "Happy the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commands." —Ps 112:1

Praise: St. Josaphat worked diligently to restore unity between the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. He produced catechisms and other works promoting dialogue between the two groups.

THE WORD ON OVERCOMING TEMPTATION - One Bread, One Body, 11/11/2022

THE WORD ON OVERCOMING TEMPTATION
"Look out that you yourselves do not lose what you have worked for; you must receive your reward in full." —2 John 8

Satan wants to keep people on the sideline and off the field of spiritual battle. If Satan cannot keep a Christian from entering the field of spiritual battle, his next tactic is to keep the Christian weak and defensive by constant accusations (Rv 12:10). He attempts to keep both Christians and non-Christians apathetic, fearful, paralyzed, distracted, and doubting.

However, one of Satan’s special opportunities is the occasion when a Christian achieves success in spiritual battle. Then the enemy will aim for a vicious takedown. When a powerful Christian falls, the evil one ensures much negative publicity, so that thousands of people will be tempted to turn away from the Lord and His Church.

God appreciates those who have labored long and hard for Him (see Heb 6:10). He does not want you to lose your reward; “you must receive your reward in full” (2 Jn 8). Satan aims to prevent that by pressing temptations upon you (see Mt 4:1ff). Thus, a verse from today’s psalm response is helpful: “Within my heart I treasure Your promise, that I may not sin against You” (Ps 119:11).

Therefore, read and treasure the Word of God each day (Ps 1:2; Acts 17:11). Store it in your heart and mind, then in time of temptation, the Holy Spirit can call to mind the Scripture verses stored in your heart to prevent you from succumbing to sin.

Prayer: Father, give me the constant grace I need to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus (Heb 12:2).

Promise: "Whoever tries to preserve his life will lose it; whoever loses it will keep it." —Lk 17:33

Praise: Family circumstances forced St. Martin of Tours to join the Roman army while still a teen. However, Martin later clothed a beggar and encountered the risen Christ.

CROSS-CULTURAL EVANGELIZATION - One Bread, One Body, 11/10/2022

Thursday, November 10, 2022, Pope St. Leo the Great

Philemon 7-20
Psalm 146:7-10
Luke 17:20-25

CROSS-CULTURAL EVANGELIZATION
"I, Paul, ambassador of Christ and now a prisoner for Him, appeal to you for my child, whom I have begotten during my imprisonment." —Philemon 9-10

Paul led Onesimus, a runaway slave and fellow prisoner, to the Lord (Phlm 10). Paul had also led Onesimus’ owner, Philemon, to the Lord (Phlm 19). Paul converted both slave and owner, both poor and rich. In his ministry of evangelization, Paul even did the unthinkable by converting both Jews and Gentiles.

Most people come to the Lord because of the witness of someone like them. It takes an amazing person to lead to the Lord people of different backgrounds. For example, most people who would identify with and have compassion for a runaway slave, don’t also relate to the slave-owner, or vice versa. It requires exceptional compassion to care about both the slave and the owner.

List the people you have been instrumental in leading to the Lord. If you observe significant differences in your converts’ ages, backgrounds, races, and economic status, then you have a love that covers a multitude of sins (1 Pt 4:8) and bridges the greatest gaps.

Evangelization is primarily a matter of deep love, and cross-cultural evangelization is a matter of even deeper love. May we love the lost more than we love ourselves. May we have a river of love so deep that it will cover not only those close and familiar to us, but also those far away and different from us.

Prayer: Father, may Your love impel me (2 Cor 5:14) to break new ground in sharing my faith.

Promise: "A time will come when you will long to see one day of the Son of Man but will not see it." —Lk 17:22

Praise: Pope St. Leo the Great wrote: "In spite of the many parts of [Christ's] holy body, the Church subsists as an integral Whole."

"GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY" (1 Cor 6:20)
"He was talking about the temple of His body." —John 2:21

Today’s feast of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome is a way of acknowledging that God dwells among His people (see Jn 1:14). This feast reminds us of the beauty of God, that all beauty is a means to glorify God. A Church building is likewise a beautiful, holy house and from it flows many graces to bless the people of God.

Today’s feast is also a reminder that God dwells in our own bodies (Jn 6:56; 17:23). We are to dedicate the temple of our body to God’s service, just like the Lateran Basilica is dedicated to God’s use. We dedicate our bodies to the Lord to glorify God in them (1 Cor 6:20), so that we may be beautiful, good, holy, and true, a pleasing dwelling place consecrated to God. May each of us likewise be united to God and each other in faith, forming a holy building founded on Christ (1 Cor 3:9-11). Let God make you a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19).

Prayer: Father, I offer my body to You to be dedicated to Your service (2 Tm 2:21; cf Rm 12:1).

Promise: "For the temple of God is holy, and you are that temple." —1 Cor 3:17

Praise: A Latin inscription inside the Lateran Basilica in Rome, translated into English, means: "The mother and head of all churches of the city and of the world."

THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORD - One Bread, One Body, 11/08/2022

THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORD
"Your teaching must have the integrity of serious, sound words to which no one can take exception." —Titus 2:8

Orthodox teaching based on the Bible is extremely important in leading people to Christ and building up the Church. False teaching is extremely destructive to our faith and to the Church. Therefore, we must “fight hard for the faith” (Jude 3) and “guard the rich deposit of faith with the help of the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us” (2 Tm 1:14). Furthermore, when we speak, we must be careful that our speech is “consistent with sound doctrine” (Ti 2:1). We should also act so that “the word of God will not fall into disrepute” (Ti 2:5). Even Christian employees should try to work extra hard for their employers so as “to please them in every way, not contradicting them nor stealing from them, but expressing a constant fidelity by their conduct, so as to adorn in every way possible the doctrine of God our Savior” (Ti 2:9-10). Whether we are teaching, fighting, guarding, speaking, acting, or working, we want to make sure we are helping people open up to God’s Word.

Our lives are so word-centered because God’s words are “spirit and life” (Jn 6:63). His words are the “joy and the happiness” of our hearts (Jer 15:16). “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133, St. Jerome). “Not on bread alone is man to live but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God” (Mt 4:4). God’s Word is “more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces” (Ps 119:72). Our “rebirth has come, not from a destructible but from an indestructible seed, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Pt 1:23). Praise You, Jesus, Word of God (Jn 1:1), for the Word of God!

Prayer: Father, may I meditate on Your Word day and night (Ps 1:2).

Promise: "It was He Who sacrificed Himself for us, to redeem us from all unrighteousness and to cleanse for Himself a people of His own, eager to do what is right." —Ti 2:14

Praise: Robert's life changed when God's Word set his heart aflame. He now reads the Bible daily.
