WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT
"If a wicked man, turning from the wickedness he has committed, does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life." —Ezekiel 18:27

Jesus began His public ministry with the command: “Reform your lives and believe in the gospel” (Mk 1:15). If we don’t repent of our sins, the shedding of Jesus’ blood and His death on the cross were done in vain for us. Repentance is the beginning and the essence of life in Christ. Nevertheless, repentance is humanly impossible, for repentance is not a minor change but a 180-degree turnabout in our lives and lifestyles. Moreover, the nature of sin is such that it blinds us to the seriousness of sin. Yet God’s grace is sufficient (2 Cor 12:9), and sinners miraculously repent day after day (see Ez 18:28).

In addition to repentance, a necessary part of our conversion is final perseverance. God’s Word says: “When a virtuous man turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die” (Ez 18:26). After we repent, we must remain faithful (see Lk 21:19). Even if we sin, we must return to the Lord and faithfulness, and persevere in that faithfulness. Otherwise, we are lost. Once again, we are totally dependent on God’s grace. Yet we must repeatedly make the free decisions to accept those graces of perseverance. So let us humble ourselves in repentance in the regular celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and strengthen our perseverance in the frequent or daily celebration of the Eucharist. The Lord has made His grace very available to us. So let us thank Him and immerse ourselves in our baptismal graces now and forever.

Prayer: Father, may I be converted by Your standards.

Promise: "It was thus that He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross! Because of this, God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name above every other name." —Phil 2:8-9

Praise: Praise the Risen Jesus, "Author of Life" (Acts 3:15).

CROSS PURPOSES - One Bread, One Body, 09/30/2023

CROSS PURPOSES
"The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of men." —Luke 9:44

Jesus said to His disciples: “Pay close attention to what I tell you” (Lk 9:44). Then He told them about the sufferings He would endure (Lk 9:44). The disciples did not grasp the meaning of Jesus’ words at all (Lk 9:45). In fact, they did not even want to understand the Lord. “They were afraid to question Him about the matter” (Lk 9:45). This unwillingness to hear the message of the cross continues to the present day.

The message of the cross is the power of God (1 Cor 1:18). We are reconciled with God and each other by the blood of the cross (Col 1:20). Sometimes we must speak of nothing but Christ crucified (1 Cor 2:2). Until we receive the message of the cross, we are in no position to properly understand Jesus as the Messiah (see Mk 8:29-31).

Because the message of the cross is the center of God’s revelation, Satan will try to prevent us from ever hearing the truth about the cross. He will try to use “wordy” wisdom to make the cross of Christ void of meaning (1 Cor 1:17). However, by God’s grace, we can receive the message of the cross. It can become the heart of our lives. We will then take up our crosses daily (Lk 9:23) and boast of nothing but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Gal 6:14). “Lift high the cross!”

Prayer: Father, when I make the sign of the cross, may it not only be habit but the meaning of my existence.

Promise: "I will be for her an encircling wall of fire, says the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst." —Zec 2:9

Praise: St. Jerome translated the entire Bible into Latin, the prevailing language of his day. He is said to have died in Bethlehem with his head resting in the manger where Jesus was born.

ANGEL FOOD
Jesus "went on to tell them, 'I solemnly assure you, you shall see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.' " —John 1:51

Jesus has provided everything possible for us to receive. He gave His life for us. He gave us His power and authority through the Church (Mt 10:1). While hanging on the cross, He even gave us His mother (Jn 19:27). Jesus also gave us His angels. Throughout His life on earth, the angels ascended and descended on Him. The archangel Gabriel was there at Jesus’ conception (Lk 1:26ff). Choirs of angels sang at His birth (Lk 2:13). Angels ministered to Him after the temptations in the desert (Mk 1:13). An angel was with Jesus in the garden of Gethsemani (Lk 22:43), as well as in the garden where He arose from the dead (Mt 28:2).

After His Ascension, Jesus sent these angels to minister to us (Heb 1:14), and we see in Acts of the Apostles extensive angelic activity in the early Church. This should also be true of the Church today. If angels are not working in your life or church, you’re probably not asking them to do anything because of a lack of faith.

Right now, ask Michael to help you claim your victory over the devil (Rv 12:7-8). Ask Gabriel to give you some good news (Lk 1:26). Ask Raphael to heal blindness and guide you (Tb 11:7, 12; 12:15).

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for angels. May I accept all Your gifts.

Promise: "Thousands upon thousands were ministering to Him, and myriads upon myriads attended Him." —Dn 7:10

Praise: St. Michael the Archangel stands "as a reinforcement and a bulwark" to protect us from evil (Dn 10:21—11:1)

TIME MANAGEMENT
"Is it time for you to dwell in your own paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?" —Haggai 1:4

Timing is of the essence. “This people says: ‘Not now has the time come to rebuild the house of the Lord’ ” (Hg 1:2). They thought it was time to dwell in their own paneled houses while God’s house was in ruins. The prophet Haggai disagreed and prophesied that now was the acceptable time” (see 2 Cor 6:2). It was the right time to rebuild the Temple (Hg 1:8).

The people’s timing was bad because they had their priorities wrong. Their priorities were wrong because they were living in selfishness rather than in love. They were living in the self-deception of selfishness rather than in the reality of God Who is Love (see 1 Jn 4:8, 16).

Haggai pointed out that bad timing and wrong priorities are recognizable by our being deprived and dissatisfied sometimes even to the point of emptiness (Hg 1:6). Are you, your marriage, family, or job showing signs of bad timing and wrong priorities? If so, repent of sin and decide to love the Lord with all your heart (see Mt 22:37). Then time will be your friend, not your enemy. Accept Jesus as Lord of your life and time.

Prayer: Father, may I do Your will exactly when You want it done.

Promise: "Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy upon their couches." —Ps 149:5

Praise: St. Wenceslaus used his time as duke to work for the religious and educational needs of his subjects.

CRUTCHES
"Take nothing for the journey, neither walking staff nor traveling bag; no bread, no money." —Luke 9:3

“All depends on faith” (Rm 4:16). We bear abundant fruit in working for the Lord, not because of our abilities, funding, or technology but by faith in Jesus Christ. Thus did Jesus send forth His apostles with nothing to rely on but faith.

Walking by faith is a challenge. We tend to grab on to any crutch we can find while Jesus takes away anything we may use for a crutch. He wants us to stand by faith and depend on Him alone (see 2 Cor 5:7). Are you seeing God’s power in your life? Are you living the Acts of the Apostles? If there’s something crippling your Christian life, possibly you have weakened your faith by not exercising it, but rather leaning on a crutch.

Can you see anything you can get rid of which will force you to be totally dependent on the Lord? (see Mk 10:21)  In weakness, God’s power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). In what ways can you stop doing it yourself and start believing in the Lord? You must do less, have less, and own less for God to do more, give more, and free you more.

Prayer: Father, put me in a situation where I have nowhere to turn but to You.

Promise: "Now, but a short time ago, mercy came to us from the Lord, our God, Who left us a remnant and gave us a stake in His holy place; thus our God has brightened our eyes and given us relief in our servitude." —Ezr 9:8

Praise: St. Vincent de Paul, with St. Louise de Marillac, founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity. Upon their deaths in 1660, the congregation had more than forty houses of ministry in the nation of France.

"ALL IN THE FAMILY"
"My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and act upon it." —Luke 8:21

Because Jesus has risen, the family is now no longer defined by the blood line passed on from the father and mother. After the Resurrection of Jesus and our Baptism into Him, the family is defined by a new blood line — the blood of Christ. Obedient faith now defines the family of God which is sealed by the blood of Jesus (Lk 8:21).

God’s call to join His family is so central that the very first paragraph of the Catechism of the Catholic Church mentions it. God “calls together all men [and women], scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of His family, the Church” (Catechism, 1). We renew our membership in His family by participating in the family meal, the Holy Eucharist.

No longer is it necessary to shed the blood of bulls, lambs, and goats (see Ezr 6:9ff) to demonstrate family loyalty. In joining the family of God through Baptism, we are begotten from above, baptized into Christ’s death and Resurrection (see Rm 6:3ff). We give evidence of our loyalty to the family by hearing the Word of God and acting upon it (Lk 8:21; Mk 3:35). We now see everything in relation to our new family, the family of God.

God is our Father, Jesus is our Brother, Savior, and Lord, and the Holy Spirit sustains us. Mary is our mother, St. Joseph our spiritual father and protector, and all who believe in Christ are our brothers and sisters. “Becoming a disciple of Jesus means accepting the invitation to belong to God’s family” (Catechism, 2233).

Prayer: Jesus, may Your "blood be on us and on our children" (Mt 27:25).

Promise: "I rejoiced because they said to me, 'We will go up to the house of the Lord.' " —Ps 122:1

Praise: Sts. Cosmas & Damian welcomed God's little ones by providing free medical care to those in need. They were martyred in Syria for their faith in Jesus.

WORD-POWER
"Take heed, therefore, how you hear." —Luke 8:18

God’s Word will not be hidden (Lk 8:17). You can be a cloud obscuring the light of God’s Word, but the light will continue to shine (see Ps 119:105), and you will be blown away.

God’s Word is irresistible (Jdt 16:14) for some people. While some resist God’s Word, there are always others who accept it. It is always “living and effective” (Heb 4:12). God’s Word always achieves the end for which it was sent (Is 55:11).

God’s Word is unstoppable. “There is no chaining the word of God!” (2 Tm 2:9) Jesus, the Word of God, leads an unstoppable, victorious army (Rv 19:13ff).

God’s Word is indestructible. Though heaven and earth pass away, God’s Word will never pass away (Lk 21:33). It is “an indestructible seed...the living and enduring word of God” (1 Pt 1:23).

God’s Word is revealed by the Church through “Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture” (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 80). Put this Word on the lampstand of your life (Lk 8:16). Share God’s Word. “When much has been given a man, much will be required of him” (Lk 12:48). “I charge you to preach the word, to stay with this task whether convenient or inconvenient” (2 Tm 4:2).

Prayer: Father, may I read and share Your Word daily.

Promise: "Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of His people, let him go up, and may his God be with him!" —Ezr 1:3

Praise: Sharing the Word of God with her children, blesses not only them, but Margarita's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"MERCY TRIUMPHS" (Jas 2:13)
"Turn to the Lord for mercy." —Isaiah 55:7

We deserve nothing good from the Lord God. He has been extraordinarily generous to us in giving us life, forgiving our sins, atoning for them through the blood of His cross, and offering us eternal life with Him. Our fundamental stance toward the Lord must always be turning to Him for mercy — for ourselves and for others. Otherwise, we might become envious because He is generous (Mt 20:15).

Possibly we might have been given the health to work, the grace to serve God, the spiritual gifts to teach, heal, and witness. Thus we serve God readily, in talent and in strength.  But what do we have that we have not received? If we have received it, why are we boasting as if it were our own? (1 Cor 4:7) God graces us to work for all acts of service, whether it is for a long time or a short time (Mt 20:12ff). All good gifts come from the Father above (see Jas 1:17). Even the desire to work and serve comes directly from God (Phil 2:13).

We might look good to others in a few areas of our service. But there will be numerous areas of our lives in which we desperately need the mercy of God. God’s ways are far above our ways (Is 55:9). Let’s make a practice of reacting to everything by abandoning ourselves to God’s mercy (see Lk 18:13-14).

Prayer: Father, thank You forever for all You have done for me. I will take up the cup of salvation, the Eucharist, as my act of gratitude to You (Ps 116:12-13).

Promise: "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord." —Is 55:8

Praise: Praise Jesus, risen Source of all grace and merciful Judge!

THE BRIER PATCH
"The seed fallen among briers are those who hear, but their progress is stifled by the cares and riches and pleasures of life and they do not mature." —Luke 8:14

If you are reading this book and the Scriptures referred to in it, you are probably not the footpath Jesus mentions in today’s Gospel reading (Lk 8:12), for you are open to the seed of God’s Word. If you read this book and the Bible consistently, you are probably not the rocky ground (Lk 8:13), for you have persevered in hearing God’s Word. Therefore, you must be either growing thorns which prevent the seed of God’s Word from maturing (see Lk 8:14) or you are bearing the precious, abundant fruit of God’s Word (Lk 8:15).

To produce fruit, you must weed the garden of your life and remove:

  • cares (Lk 8:14). Jesus commanded us: “Stop worrying, then, over questions like, ‘What are we to eat, or what are we to drink, or what are we to wear?’ ” (Mt 6:31)
  • riches (Lk 8:14). The Lord has warned us: “Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and a trap. They are letting themselves be captured by foolish and harmful desires which drag men down to ruin and destruction” (1 Tm 6:9). Even if we are poor, we are trapped if we want to be rich (1 Tm 6:9).
  • the pleasures of life (Lk 8:14). The Lord wants us to enjoy ourselves sometimes. Yet we must not live for pleasures but for Him, even if this means we will suffer greatly.

Weed your brier patch or you will never have a harvest.

Prayer: Father, do whatever is necessary to purify my heart.

Promise: "Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful song." —Ps 100:2

Praise: St. Pio, a holy Capuchin priest, bore the stigmata of Christ's crucified wounds in his hands for fifty years (see Gal 6:17).

CONTROVERSIAL
"Whoever teaches in any other way, not holding to the sound doctrines of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching proper to true religion, should be recognized as both conceited and ignorant, a sick man in his passion for polemics and controversy." —1 Timothy 6:3-4

We humans enjoy controversy. It’s hard to get on TV or noticed on social media unless you say or do something controversial. Even in religion, denominations denounce one another, Protestants protest, and Catholics pontificate. We thrive on the polemics of politics, talk shows, and online editorials.

God calls this attitude “sick” (1 Tm 6:4). Our society’s passion for controversy indicates conceit and ignorance (1 Tm 6:4), “in a word, the bickering of men with twisted minds who have lost all sense of truth” (1 Tm 6:5). This sinful attitude results in “envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions” (1 Tm 6:4). God tells us to “flee from all this. Instead, seek after integrity, piety, faith, love, steadfastness, and a gentle spirit” (1 Tm 6:11).

“Keep reminding people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about mere words. This does no good and can be the ruin of those who listen” (2 Tm 2:14). “Never act out of rivalry or conceit; rather, let all parties think humbly of others as superior to themselves” (Phil 2:3).

Prayer: Jesus, deliver and heal me from the sickness of enjoying controversy.

Promise: "In no way can a man redeem himself, or pay his own ransom to God." —Ps 49:8

Praise: Angela exchanged her career in secular media to work for Catholic media.

GOD'S KINGDOM OF MERCY (Mt 9:13)
"I have come to call, not the self-righteous, but sinners." —Matthew 9:13

St. Matthew wrote much of his Gospel about the Kingdom of God. Matthew presents several parables in which Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of God (see e.g. Mt 13:4-50; Mt 25:1-46).

Matthew spent many years living outside the Kingdom of God. He had been trapped inside the kingdom of darkness, betraying and possibly extorting his own people as a tax collector (Mt 9:9). So when Jesus broke into Matthew’s life and delivered him from the kingdom of darkness to the marvelous light of the Kingdom of God (Col 1:13; cf 1 Pt 2:9), Matthew couldn’t stop marveling at God’s Kingdom and about Jesus, his Deliverer.

Matthew must have spent much time reflecting on Jesus’ statement that He had come to call sinners, and that God desired mercy most of all (Mt 9:13). Matthew knew what Jesus, in His mercy, had done for him, and he knew God’s plan to redeem the world.

Some of you who read this are like Matthew. You have spent time in the kingdom of darkness, “without hope and without God in the world” (Eph 2:12). God desires to make you His instrument of mercy. Let His Kingdom come and His will be done in your life (see Mt 6:10).

Prayer: Father, transform me into an instrument of Your mercy, so I can spread Your mercy to all who need it.

Promise: "Make every effort to preserve the unity which has the Spirit as its origin and peace as its binding force." —Eph 4:3

Praise: St. Matthew believed in the Messiah when Jesus called him to leave his job and even more so when Jesus called him to leave his earthly life through martyrdom.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT
"You will know what kind of conduct befits a member of God's household, the Church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of truth." —1 Timothy 3:15

Christians sometimes conceal rather than reveal Christ by conduct unbefitting “a member of God’s household.” We act “like children squatting in the city squares,” self-centered and full of complaints (Lk 7:32). We often make the Christian life look like a drag, fulfilling our “Sunday obligation,” doing only the minimum, out of so-called love for God.

Additionally, Christians have trouble with their mouths (see Jas 3:8). It’s questionable whether we gossip any less than non-Christians. In many ways, we’re just about as worldly as unbelievers. How many churches raise money through gambling and selling beer!

The Lord calls us to project a different image — His image. We must “hunger and thirst for holiness” (Mt 5:6) and in every aspect of our conduct be holy as Jesus is holy (1 Pt 1:15, 16). Christians and churches that are not holy but lukewarm cause Him to become nauseated (Rv 3:16). Let’s live for God with no compromises.

Prayer: Lord, have mercy and forgive me.

Promise: "God's wisdom is vindicated by all who accept it." —Lk 7:35

Praise: St. Andrew's companions in martyrdom included bishops, priests, men and women, married and unmarried, children and young people, and the elderly.

TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES
"As He approached the gate of the town a dead man was being carried out, the only son of a widowed mother." —Luke 7:12

The mother of the dead man was literally all alone. She was widowed, and this was her only son. Here we have a combination of sudden, tragic events in the pattern of Job. Is there any hope under these dreadful circumstances?

Yes! Jesus has conquered death; He is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25). He is “moved with pity” and says: “Do not cry” (Lk 7:13). Jesus will either raise the dead to continue life on earth, or better, raise the dead to the perfect happiness of His presence in heaven. Jesus will either say: “Young man, I bid you get up” (Lk 7:14), or “This day you will be with Me in paradise” (Lk 23:43). Only Jesus can wipe away our tears (see Rv 21:4). “He comforts us in all our afflictions” (2 Cor 1:4). He alone can make life worth living — and death worth dying. Nothing is impossible with Him (Lk 1:37). He can turn even tragic events to the good for those who love Him (Rm 8:28). Jesus our Life! Jesus our Hope! Jesus our Lord!

Prayer: Jesus, give supernatural consolation to those who have suffered tragic deaths in their families.

Promise: "They must hold fast to the divinely revealed faith with a clear conscience." —1 Tm 3:9

Praise: St. Januarius and his companions had to be martyred by beheading because the planned execution of mauling by beasts was averted when the wild animals in the arena wouldn't touch them.

PRIORITY PRAYER
"First of all, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all men." —1 Timothy 2:1

Jesus got up earlier than His disciples in order to pray (Mk 1:35). Jesus frequently prayed into the night (see Lk 6:12; 22:39ff). He taught His disciples to pray (Lk 11:1) and spoke of “the necessity of praying always” (Lk 18:1). Nevertheless, Jesus’ disciples probably did not grasp what Jesus meant by the importance of prayer.

A few hours before He was crucified, Jesus took three of His apostles aside in the Garden of Gethsemani where He hoped that they would pray one of the greatest “holy hours” of prayer ever prayed (see Mt 26:36ff). However, they fell asleep and missed out on this invaluable lesson on prayer. Less than fifty days later, Jesus ascended into heaven and told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem to be baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5). As they waited, they devoted themselves to constant and communal prayer (Acts 1:14). They prayed what would later be called the first “novena,” nine days of prayer. They received the Holy Spirit, baptized three thousand people that day (Acts 2:41), and the Church was born. Thus, prayer was recognized as an original, constitutive part of the Church. Accordingly, the Church devoted herself to prayer (Acts 2:42) and made prayer a priority. Will you pray “first of all”? (1 Tm 2:1)

Prayer: Father, teach me the priority of prayer.

Promise: "When the deputation returned to the house, they found the servant in perfect health." —Lk 7:10

Praise: Praying an all-night vigil changed Robert's life. He fell deeply in love with Jesus in the Eucharist.

THE BEAR-HUG
"Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight." —Sirach 27:30

Our natural tendency is to give a bear-hug to wrath, anger, and unforgiveness. When we are in a bear hug, we can’t hug anyone else. We can’t even hold anyone else’s hand or touch them. When we are hugging unforgiveness, we can’t hug God or even be in touch with Him. Nor can we hug our spouses or children. When we are captured in the bear hug of unforgiveness, we live a godless, loveless life. We are handed “over to the torturers” (Mt 18:34).

Only God can free us from the slavery and suffocation of the bear hug of unforgiveness. The old saying is true: “To err is human; to forgive is divine.” Only God can give us the power to forgive. Jesus, Who commands us to forgive seventy times seven (Mt 18:22), is giving to us at this moment the grace to forgive all those who have wronged us in any way. Decide right now to accept His grace. By the power of Jesus, forgive everyone for everything ever done against you. The bear hug is broken. You are free; you can breathe again; you can love again. You can hug God.

Prayer: Father, if I am unwilling to forgive, change my heart.

Promise: "While we live we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die we die as His servants." —Rm 14:8

Praise: Praise Jesus, Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16), Healer, Lord, Resurrection and Life! Alleluia!

HOPE FOR SINNERS
"You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." —1 Timothy 1:15

St. Paul was the worst sinner in the world (1 Tm 1:15), “an extreme case” (1 Tm 1:16). He was “a blasphemer, a persecutor, a man filled with arrogance” (1 Tm 1:13). Paul is “an example to those who would later have faith” in Jesus (1 Tm 1:16). Because the Lord changed Paul, He can change anybody — even your spouse, child, boss, enemy — even you! No matter how many abortions have been committed, how many children abused, how many millions left to starve, the Lord can change anything by changing anybody.

Almost everyone believes in the power of the world, the flesh, and the devil to pervert the human person. Nevertheless, as great as this power is, it is finite. God’s power to convert the human person is infinite. He will not take away our free will, but the power of Jesus’ death and Resurrection is so awesome as to keep us from putting too much emphasis on our rebellious will (see 1 Jn 4:4).

Paul’s conversion is a sign of hope. We never have to give up on ourselves or on the most hardened sinners. Jesus’ grace is sufficient (2 Cor 12:9). There is no chaining His Word (2 Tm 2:9). There is nothing impossible for Him (Lk 1:37). Jesus’ love never fails (1 Cor 13:8).

Be hopeful. Jesus saves.

Prayer: Father, may I expect Your mercy to triumph over judgment (Jas 2:13).

Promise: "Each man speaks from his heart's abundance." —Lk 6:45

Praise: St. Cyprian was condemned to death for his faith in Jesus. To the decree, "It is decided that Thascius Cyprian should die by the sword," Cyprian responded with "Thanks be to God!"

THE BLESSINGS OF GODLY SORROW
"There is your mother." —John 19:27

Today we celebrate the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. Mary, the Sorrowful Mother, endured many sorrows in the course of her earthly life (see Lk 2:48), often depicted in devotions such as the Seven Sorrows of Mary. In the present secular culture, there is a widespread lack of sorrow for sin. Instead, there is pride, arrogance, and contempt for the very concept of sin.

There is such a thing as godly sorrow, “a sorrow that came from God” (2 Cor 7:9). “Indeed, sorrow for God’s sake produces a repentance without regrets, leading to salvation, whereas worldly sorrow brings death” (2 Cor 7:10). “Just look at the fruit of this sorrow which stems from God” (2 Cor 7:11): a holy zeal rather than apathy, readiness to defend oneself from spiritual warfare rather than allowing the devil to run rampant in the world, an ardent desire to restore the balance of justice rather than an acceptance of injustice, and innocence in place of guilt (2 Cor 7:11).

A godly sorrow for sin leads to a reduction in sin, an increased love and worship of God, a corresponding desire to make reparation for sin, an increase of justice, peace, humility, holiness, and righteousness. Additionally, it leads to blessings for those who grieve sin. Those who mourned Israel’s sin and iniquities were spared from destruction (see Ez 9:4ff). Jesus Himself said: “Blessed too are the sorrowing, they shall be consoled” (Mt 5:4).

From the cross, Jesus commands us to receive Mary as our mother (Jn 19:27). Receive Mary into your home as your mother (Jn 19:27). Welcome godly sorrow and its blessings.

Prayer: "My Mother, share Thy grief with me, and let me bear Thee company to mourn Thy Jesus' death with Thee."

Promise: "This Child is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed." —Lk 2:34

NO LOSS AT THIS CROSS
"He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross! Because of this, God highly exalted Him."—Philippians 2:8-9

John’s Gospel particularly highlights the exaltation of the cross of Jesus. St. John proclaims that the cross is the catalyst for faith leading to eternal life (Jn 3:14-16), and the place where we finally recognize that Jesus is God (Jn 8:28-29).

“They shall look on Him Whom they have pierced” (Jn 19:37). “The centurion who stood guard over Him, on seeing the manner of His death, declared, ‘Clearly this Man was the Son of God!’ ” (Mk 15:39) When we see Jesus lifted up on the cross, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, we are drawn to believe and “have eternal life in Him” (Jn 3:14-15; 12:32). St. Paul transformed the most hardened hearts by speaking “of nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor 2:2). He proclaimed the Gospel by displaying before the eyes of all Jesus Christ upon the cross (Gal 3:1).

As a subject of King Jesus, you are called to bear a daily cross (Lk 9:23). Do you carry your cross in such a way that it proclaims to everyone that “Jesus Christ is Lord”? (Phil 2:11) You are blessed with the unspeakable privilege of sharing in the victorious cross of King Jesus. Therefore, glory in the cross and carry your cross so as to triumph.

Prayer: King Jesus, grant that I may carry my cross in a way that proclaims You as Victor rather than a heartless taskmaster.

Promise: "Yes, God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life. God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." —Jn 3:16-17

Praise: "We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world."

LIFESTYLES OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS
"Woe to you rich, for your consolation is now." —Luke 6:24

Most of you who read this live in dwellings with running water, indoor plumbing, electricity, and heating. Many of you have smartphones, automobiles, refrigerators, and TVs. Some of you have dishwashers, computers, and air conditioning. A few of you have second homes, boats, and millions of dollars.

Jesus says: “Woe to you rich” (Lk 6:24). It’s so easy to shrug off His words and think, “He can’t be talking about me. I don’t have a dishwasher, and I don’t have a summer home.” Forget those comparisons. If we must compare, let’s compare ourselves to those Jesus addressed. Every one of those people walked a long distance to the “level stretch” by the mountain (Lk 6:17). No one had coolers full of ice and drinks. They had no bathrooms or vending machines. Nearly all of them slept on mats on the floor of what we would consider huts. Even the rich in the crowd and in that society couldn’t imagine in their wildest dreams the lifestyle most of us live today. Yet Jesus felt it was important for His first-century hearers to be warned of the woes of riches.

“I am about to give you some advice on this matter of rich and poor” (2 Cor 8:10). Jesus is the same today as on that day (Heb 13:8). By His standards, we are rich — and in danger of woe (Lk 6:24). Don’t disregard Jesus’ words. He is Lord and Judge. We must tremble at His word (Is 66:2). We must judge our lives by His words and standards, not by those of our culture.

Repent of not using your resources for the kingdom of God. Simplify your lives. Tithe and give alms, and “all will be wiped clean for you” (Lk 11:41).

Prayer: Jesus, though rich, You made Yourself poor for my sake (2 Cor 8:9). I give my finances, my lifestyle, my all to You.

Promise: "When Christ our Life appears, then you shall appear with Him in glory." —Col 3:4

Praise: St. John Chrysostom used his gift of spiritual fatherhood to teach mystics, pastors, and everyone seeking holiness.

TOP 9 REASONS TO LOVE AND LIVE YOUR BAPTISM
"Continue, therefore, to live in Christ Jesus the Lord, in the spirit in which you received Him." ––Colossians 2:6

Many Catholics are baptized as infants. We have no memory of the event. Thus, we often don’t realize its significance:

1)      “In baptism you were not only buried with Him but also raised to life with Him” (Col 2:12).

2)      This risen life is brought about through your “baptism of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (Ti 3:5).

3)      “You are now saved by a baptismal bath which corresponds” to Noah and his family escaping in the ark through the water (see 1 Pt 3:20-21).

4)      “All of you who have been baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Him” (Gal 3:27).

5)      “You have been washed, consecrated, justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor 6:11).

6)      After seeing the risen Christ, St. Paul himself was instructed by Ananias, “Be baptized at once and wash away your sins as you call upon His name” (Acts 22:16).

7)      Jesus said, “No one can enter into God’s kingdom without being begotten of water and Spirit” (Jn 3:5).

8)      Jesus also said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mk 16:16, RSV-CE).

9)      Finally, Jesus linked Baptism to making “disciples of all the nations” (Mt 28:19).

Be a disciple. Love your Baptism. Live your Baptism.

Prayer: Father, grace me to live my Baptism generously.

Promise: "The Lord is good to all and compassionate toward all His works." ––Ps 145:9

Praise: "All ages to come shall call me blessed" (Lk 1:48). Thank You, Holy Spirit, for teaching us how to properly honor the Most Holy Name of Mary.

ALL FOR YOU
"I want you to know how hard I am struggling for you...and the many others who have never seen me in the flesh." —Colossians 2:1

I had the blessed privilege of serving as Fr. Al Lauer’s chief editor for this booklet, One Bread, One Body (OBOB), for the last ten years of his life. He would never have mentioned what he endured to feed you with God’s Word, but today’s first reading from Colossians would have been dear to his heart.

He found his “joy in the suffering” he endured “for you” (Col 1:24), his beloved readers of OBOB. In his own flesh, he took part in the sufferings of Christ for your sake (Col 1:24). He wrote page after page daily for twenty years, whether on his deathbed, in the hospital preparing for or recovering from surgery, in airports or on airplanes, or crowded public places if necessary. In his last few years, he continued to write teachings despite painful intestinal blockages and, eventually, terminal cancer.

He wished your “hearts to be strengthened and...closely united in love, enriched with full assurance by [your] knowledge of the mystery of God — namely Christ” (Col 2:2). He wanted to teach you “the full measure of wisdom,” that is, the Scriptures and the teachings of the Church, “hoping to make” each of you “complete in Christ” (Col 1:28). “For this” he worked and struggled, “impelled by that energy of [the Lord’s] which [was] so powerful a force within” him (Col 1:29).

Fr. Al Lauer loved each of you. If a man can so love and suffer for you, know for certain how much more you are loved by Jesus, the God-Man, Who gave His life for you. Live in His love (Jn 15:9). “Then go and do the same” (Lk 10:37).

Prayer: Jesus, I lay my life at Your feet. Use me as You see fit.

Promise: Jesus "said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' The man did so and his hand was perfectly restored." —Lk 6:10

Praise: Jesus set Margie free from smoking cigarettes.

HATING THE SIN, LOVING THE SINNER
"If I tell the wicked man that he shall surely die, and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked man from his way, he [the wicked man] shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death." —Ezekiel 33:8

“You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Tm 1:15). Therefore, as followers of Jesus, we must be very concerned about sin. First, we must remove the plank of sin from our eyes so that we will see clearly to remove the specks of sin from the eyes of our brothers and sisters (Mt 7:5). Then we should correct and warn the person who is sinning (Ez 33:8), “but keep it between the two of” us (Mt 18:15). If privately correcting a person who sins against us is not well received (Mt 18:16), we should bring other Christians into this “ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor 5:18). Moreover, “anyone who sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, should petition God, and thus life will be given to the sinner” (1 Jn 5:16). “Remember this: the person who brings a sinner back from his way will save his soul from death and cancel a multitude of sins” (Jas 5:20). Finally, we must rejoice with the Lord, the saints, and the angels “over one repentant sinner” (Lk 15:7, 10).

Prayer: Father, use me to lead many to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Promise: "Owe no debt to anyone except the debt that binds us to love one another. He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law." —Rm 13:8

Praise: Praise Jesus, risen, glorified, and seated at the right hand of the Father!

EAT YOU ALIVE
"You nourished hostility in your hearts because of your evil deeds." —Colossians 1:21

Hostility, unforgiveness, bitterness, and resentment have ravenous appetites. They demand to be nourished constantly with bitter and unkind thoughts. Still that’s not enough. Those thoughts must spill out into words. We speak out of the abundance of our hearts (Lk 6:45). Like a devouring lion (1 Pt 5:8), the jaws of unforgiveness chew on gossip and slander born of resentment. Yet unforgiveness still must eat more. It relentlessly devours people, marriages, families, and friendships. It eventually may commit suicide by consuming the very person it feeds upon.

Unforgiveness gnaws on our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. It eats us alive. Like cancer, unforgiveness and bitterness take over our body until we are dead. Like poison, hostility and resentment destroy indiscriminately, ruining both the object of the hate and the one expelling the venom.

Brothers and sisters, forgive or be handed over to the torturers to die a miserable death even into eternal damnation (Mt 18:34-35). The one who refuses to forgive is always among the casualties. Decide to forgive. Jesus will give you the grace, for He “has achieved reconciliation for you in His mortal body by dying, so as to present you to God holy, free of reproach and blame” (Col 1:22).

Prayer: Jesus, as You hung on the cross, You forgave me (Lk 23:34). Give me the grace to be willing to forgive.

Promise: "The Son of Man is Lord even of the sabbath." —Lk 6:5

Praise: St. Peter Claver was led by the Spirit to leave his homeland to minister to the poor, "a slave to the slaves." He baptized several hundred thousand slaves in his years of ministry to them.
