FAMILY FEUD
"The Child's father and mother were marveling." —Luke 2:33

The holy families of today are walking through a mine field. One false step, and the family is blown up. Christian parents must be Josephs who know exactly when to leave and where to go. Parents must be divinely inspired and guided because today even more Herods are searching for their children to destroy them (see Mt 2:13). Parents must know and live the Bible and the teachings of the Church or they will be hopelessly confused, and their families will suffer. Family prayer has never been more necessary. Wives must be submissive and husbands must sacrificially love their wives (Col 3:18-19). Now more than ever, children must obey their parents “in everything as the acceptable way in the Lord” (Col 3:20).

Today’s holy families need order, guidance, prayer, power, and protection. Families need God, His amazing grace, and daily, if not hourly, miracles. Holy families, don’t be discouraged! The Lord promises: “Those who oppose you I will oppose, and your sons [and daughters] I will save” (Is 49:25). “All your sons [and daughters] shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children” (Is 54:13). This Christmas, let these words become flesh in your family (Jn 1:14).

Prayer: Father, may parents be hopeful and confident about their families' future and eternity because of Your saving love and almighty power.

Promise: "The Child grew in size and strength, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him." —Lk 2:40

Praise: "Give to the Lord, you families of nations, give to the Lord glory and praise" (Ps 96:7).

(Make a New Year's resolution to pray together as a family daily. Listen to, download or order our CD 59-1 or DVD 59, Family Prayer, on our website.)

WORLD WAR WON
"If anyone loves the world, the Father's love has no place in him." —1 John 2:15

Most of us believe that love for the world could distract people from receiving God the Father’s love. In contrast, the Lord maintains that love for the world will totally displace the Father’s love from our lives. Therefore, we must have no love for the world (1 Jn 2:15), make no provisions for the desires of the flesh (Rm 13:14), and crucify the “flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal 5:24). Love for the world is like cancer. Even a little bit of it kills.

The Lord has been extremely clear about our relationship with the world. He chose us out of the world (Jn 15:19), and the world hates us (Jn 15:18; 17:14). Nevertheless, we can choose to be the world’s friends and thereby become God’s enemies (Jas 4:4; Phil 3:18-19).

As clear as the Lord is about our relationship with the world, many Christians have never gotten the message. Therefore, the Lord has sent as messengers Christians who, like little children, depend on God the Father (see 1 Jn 2:14). These “little ones” are graced by the Holy Spirit to convict us of our worldliness (see Jn 16:8). Fathers especially are anointed to communicate the message of God the Father’s all-sufficient love (1 Jn 2:13, 14). In our Father’s love, we have everything. We don’t need “the world with its seductions” (1 Jn 2:17). Finally, the Lord has chosen young men (1 Jn 2:13, 14) like Sts. Paul, Anthony, Benedict, Francis, Dominic, and others to rebel against the world. The message of these saints rocks the world. Because of them, many crucify themselves to the world and live in the Father’s love (Gal 6:14).

Prayer: Father, this Christmas free me from the world.

Promise: "She was constantly in the temple, worshiping day and night in fasting and prayer. Coming on the scene at this moment, she gave thanks to God and talked about the Child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem." —Lk 2:37-38

Praise: Bill designs websites that proclaim the Word of God.

RECEIVING BELIEVING
"Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother: 'This Child is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed.' " —Luke 2:34

On the fifth day of Christmas, what does God want to do in our lives? How will our lives be different after the Christmas season than before it? The Lord certainly wants us to grow in faith. He wants us to end the Christmas season and begin the new year with a greater faith than ever before.

The Lord calls us to see like Simeon and Anna. When Jesus was presented in the Temple, hundreds of people had the chance to see the Baby Jesus. Only Simeon and Anna, however, saw Him with the eyes of faith. By faith, they recognized that Jesus was not only a baby but the “revealing Light to the Gentiles” (Lk 2:32) and the Glory of God’s people.

As Christmas continues, Jesus wants us to believe much more deeply that:

  • He is God (see Mk 14:61-62). Therefore, we must worship and obey Him.
  • At Mass, bread and wine become His Body and Blood (see 1 Cor 11:24-25).
  • The Church is not merely a human institution but the Body of Christ (cf Eph 1:22-23, Catechism of the Catholic Church, 776-777).
  • Prayer is communicating with God, and so, prayer is one of our most important and powerful privileges (cf Ps 17:6).

Despite our agnostic culture of death, receive the miracle of great faith through prayer (Jude 20) and God’s Word (Rm 10:17). Receive the ultimate Christmas gift — great and growing faith.

Prayer: "Now, Master, You can dismiss Your servant in peace; You have fulfilled Your word" (Lk 2:29).

Promise: "On second thought, the commandment that I write you is new." —1 Jn 2:8

Praise: St. Thomas Becket was impelled by love (2 Cor 5:14) to endure exile and eventually death in defense of the truth.

EMERGENCY CALL
"A cry was heard at Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation: Rachel bewailing her children; no comfort for her, since they are no more." —Matthew 2:18

At the first Christmas, the innocent children of Bethlehem were massacred by Herod. At this Christmas, the Herods of our time still convulse at the reality of God becoming man. They express their repulsion by killing children in and out of the womb through abortion, starvation, and abuse.

For every Herod, there is a Joseph. For every murderer, there is a disciple of Jesus, who will be told by the Lord how to save the lives of children. The Lord told St. Joseph to “take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt” (Mt 2:13). What is He telling you? You’re not responsible to do everything, but you can do something. What is the Lord saying?

Can He talk to you? Are you open to surprises, sacrifices, corrections, or challenges? Are there things you refuse to hear, defenses you won’t let down, sacrifices you won’t make, and sin you won’t admit? The first question is not: “What am I hearing?” but “What am I willing to hear?” The Lord can save lives through you if you let Him talk to you.

Prayer: Father, may I not stand idly by when people are dying (Lv 19:16).

Promise: "If anyone should sin, we have, in the presence of the Father, Jesus Christ, an Intercessor Who is just. He is an Offering for our sins, and not for our sins only, but for those of the whole world." —1 Jn 2:1-2

Praise: The Holy Innocents now number in the millions. They pray for us to repent.

BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS
"Then the disciple who had arrived first at the tomb went in. He saw and believed." —John 20:8

“The other disciple (the one Jesus loved)” (Jn 20:2), not only ran to Jesus’ tomb faster than Peter, but also believed faster. However, St. Mary Magdalene was faster than both Sts. Peter and John. She ran to them before they ran to the tomb (Jn 20:2). She was the first one mentioned by the Gospels as having met the risen Christ and expressed faith in Him. We can have “fast faith” as Mary Magdalene did.

When we love someone, we want her/him to accept our love as soon as possible. Jesus is no different. He wants us to believe in His love for us right away. He wants us to grow in our love for Him in an accelerated way. He wants to deepen our love for Him very quickly in the next two weeks of the Christmas season.

Christmas celebrates when human beings could touch, kiss, hold, feel, see, and hear Jesus physically (see 1 Jn 1:1-2). This physical contact with Jesus made possible a deep, personal relationship with Him. We did not lose this when Jesus physically ascended into heaven. By the Holy Spirit and through the Eucharist, we now have even greater opportunities for a close, personal relationship with Jesus. This Christmas season, grow quickly in a deep, intimate love for Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may my personal relationship with You through Jesus grow by leaps and bounds this Christmas season.

Promise: "Indeed, our purpose in writing you this is that our joy may be complete." —1 Jn 1:4

Praise: St. John's love for Christ overtook fear (1 Jn 4:18) as he received the grace to stand at the foot of the cross and was able to share in the Good News of Jesus' resurrection.

THE THREE "LAST WORDS" OF STEPHEN
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." —Acts 7:59

On Good Friday, we often hear about the seven “last words” of Jesus, uttered as He hung dying in agony upon the cross. Today, we hear the three “last words” of St. Stephen, uttered as he was being stoned to death for his faith in the crucified and risen Jesus. In perfect imitation of Christ, St. Stephen said:

1)      “Look!...I see an opening in the sky, and the Son of Man standing at God’s right hand” (Acts 7:56; see also Mk 14:62). With St. Stephen, “let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus” (Heb 12:2), so we can rejoice in times of persecution.

2)      “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:59). Stephen prayed this “as [he] was being stoned” (Acts 7:59). Just before He died, Jesus had prayed, “Father, into Your hands I commend My Spirit” (Lk 23:46). Disciples imitate Jesus in His character and in His ministry. This disposition trains us to respond as Jesus did in every moment of our life.

3)      “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60). This was the last word Stephen spoke before he died. Jesus likewise prayed from the cross: “Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34). We speak out of the abundance of our heart (Lk 6:45). If we forgive always, we can speak forgiveness even when persecuted.

A young Jewish man named Saul of Tarsus was glad to witness St. Stephen’s death (Acts 7:58; 8:1). Although Saul wanted Stephen killed, he nonetheless heard the three last words of St. Stephen, and eventually converted to become a great apostle. Be a Stephen. Imitate Jesus daily in word and deed.

Prayer: Jesus, may my words bring many to Your kingdom.

Promise: "The Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you." —Mt 10:20

Praise: St. Stephen accepted the grace to see Jesus in heaven and forgive his murderers before his earthly life ended.

KEEP CHRISTMAS IN CHRIST
"This enduring love came through Jesus Christ." —John 1:17

For hundreds of years, the coming of the Messiah had been prophesied. “They name Him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful” (Is 9:5-6).

However, when the Messiah finally was born, “there was in Him no stately bearing to make us look at Him, nor appearance that would attract us to Him. He was spurned and avoided by men” (Is 53:2-3). “The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their rulers failed to recognize Him, and in condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets which we read sabbath after sabbath” (Acts 13:27). “He was in the world, and through Him the world was made, yet the world did not know Who He was. To His own He came, yet His own did not accept Him” (Jn 1:10-11). Jesus was born in a stable and laid in a manger because there was already no room for Him in the hearts of many (Lk 2:7).

Jesus, emptied of His glory (Phil 2:7), all too human, the suffering Messiah, continues to be easily rejected. He is so easily rejected that over a billion people can celebrate His birthday without giving Him a present, or even a thought. Will you be among the shepherds who notice Jesus — or even among the wise men who worship Him? Will you be like Mary and Joseph and let the Lord totally disrupt your life — all for the Baby Jesus? Will you put Christ ahead of Christmas?

Reject anything in Christmas not pleasing to Christ. Accept Him as Lord and Savior of Christmas.

Prayer: Father, give me a "Mary" Christmas. May I love Jesus as Mary does.

Promise: God "has spoken to us through His Son." —Heb 1:2

Praise: "Joy to the world, the Lord is come. Let earth receive her King." Alleluia!

A "MARY," MERRY CHRISTMAS
"Mary said to the angel, 'How can this be...?' " —Luke 1:34

To have a true Christmas, to meet Christ at Mass in a new, glorious way during the Christmas season, we must have a “Mary” Christmas and love Jesus as Mary does. To have a “Mary” Christmas, we should:

  • not fear (Lk 1:30),
  • be filled with God’s grace (Lk 1:30),
  • have “the Holy Spirit...come upon” us (Lk 1:35),
  • believe that “nothing is impossible with God” (Lk 1:37),
  • rejoice in being the Lord’s servants, that is, the slaves of the Lord (Lk 1:38),
  • “let it be done” to us according to God’s Word (Lk 1:38),
  • trust “that the Lord’s words” to us will “be fulfilled” (Lk 1:45),
  • proclaim “the greatness of the Lord” and find “joy in God” our Savior (Lk 1:46-47),
  • “be pierced with a sword” of sorrow (Lk 2:35),
  • “do whatever [Jesus] tells” us and tell others to do the same (Jn 2:5),
  • be at the foot of Jesus’ cross (Jn 19:25), and
  • together devote ourselves to constant prayer for a new Pentecost (Acts 1:14).

A “Mary” Christmas is a Christmas of faith, joy, self-sacrifice, obedience, evangelistic zeal, redemptive suffering, praise-filled worship, and constant prayer in the Holy Spirit.

“Mary” Christmas!

Prayer: Jesus, may You get what You want for Christmas.

Promise: "The favors of the Lord I will sing forever; through all generations my mouth shall proclaim Your faithfulness." —Ps 89:2

Praise: "Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel because He has visited and ransomed His people" (Lk 1:68).

Before Christ’s coming this Christmas, we must be purified. In fact, that’s putting it mildly. We need to be refined by fire and have our crimson-stained sins (Is 1:18) whitened by “the fuller’s lye” (Mal 3:2). We need to be purged, detoxified, and repentant (Mk 1:4).

Most Christians don’t consider themselves so dirty as to require such extreme forms of purification. I’m sure Zechariah, being a just man and a blameless priest (Lk 1:6), didn’t think he needed nine months of being mute to “clean up his act” (see Lk 1:20). Most Christians think they need to be merely dusted off, not put in a blast furnace.

However, God knows His children better than they know themselves. Most little children don’t recognize dirt the way their parents do. The children are often quite content to make a mess and live in it. Children don’t usually tell parents to clean their rooms, but vice versa. In today’s Scripture readings and in this Advent season, God the Father is telling us, His children, that we may be more dirty than we think.

Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you of sin (Jn 16:8). Repent! Go to Confession before Christmas. Be clean and pure — by the Father’s standards.

Prayer: Jesus, this Christmas by Your grace I will be pure as You are pure (1 Jn 3:3).

Promise: "All who heard stored these things up in their hearts, saying, 'What will this child be?' and, 'Was not the hand of the Lord upon him?' " —Lk 1:66

Praise: "O Emmanuel, King and Lawgiver, Desire of the nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord our God."

Biodynamic Gardening Guide: Definition, Key Principles, Best Practices, Benefits, Tools and Preparations

Biodynamic gardening offers a profound approach to cultivating the earth, resonating with ancient wisdom and modern ecological consciousness. It transcends conventional organic practices by fostering a holistic understanding of the garden as a living organism, intertwined with the rhythms of nature and the cosmos. Embracing this philosophy nurtures vibrant, nutrient-rich produce while promoting a deeper connection to the natural world.

Key Principles of Biodynamic Gardening

1. Understanding the Farm as a Living Organism:

  • Biodynamics views the farm or garden as an interconnected entity, where soil, plants, animals, and cosmic forces collaborate in a delicate dance of life.
  • Nurturing this interconnectedness is paramount, ensuring a synergistic balance that promotes vitality and resilience.

2. Strengthening the Soil:

  • Biodynamic preparations, meticulously crafted from natural substances, act as catalysts for soil health.
  • These preparations invigorate microbial life, enhance fertility, and promote a thriving soil ecosystem—the foundation for robust plant growth.

3. Aligning with Cosmic Rhythms:

  • Biodynamics recognizes the profound influence of celestial rhythms on plant growth.
  • Planting, cultivating, and harvesting in harmony with lunar cycles, planetary alignments, and seasonal transitions optimizes plant vitality and yields.

4. Embracing Biodiversity:

  • Biodynamic gardens embrace diversity, fostering a tapestry of plant species, insect life, and beneficial organisms.
  • This biodiversity fosters resilience, thwarts pests, and creates a harmonious ecosystem where each element contributes to the garden's overall health.

Essential Practices for Biodynamic Gardening Success

1. Composting: The Heart of Soil Fertility

  • Biodynamic composting is a meticulous art, transforming organic matter into a nutrient-rich elixir for the soil.
  • Specific preparations, such as BD500 and BD502, enhance compost vitality, accelerating decomposition and enriching the soil's microbial life.

2. Planting by the Moon and Stars:

  • Biodynamic planting calendars guide gardeners to align sowing and harvesting with auspicious cosmic rhythms.
  • This practice is believed to optimize plant growth, nutrient uptake, and flavor development.

3. Fostering Biodiversity:

  • Intercropping, companion planting, and cultivating a diversity of species create a vibrant ecosystem that benefits all inhabitants.
  • Beneficial insects thrive, pests are kept in check, and the garden becomes a resilient, self-sustaining microcosm.

4. Honoring Animals and Their Role:

  • Biodynamic farms often integrate livestock, recognizing their crucial role in nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and overall farm health.
  • Animals contribute manure for compost, grazing for weed control, and their unique energy to the farm's ecosystem.

The Rewards of Biodynamic Gardening

1. Nutrient-Rich, Flavorful Produce:

  • Biodynamic practices yield produce that is not only free of chemicals but also brimming with vitality and flavor.
  • The heightened nutrient density and vibrant energy of biodynamically grown food are often palpable to those who consume it.

2. Deeper Connection to Nature:

  • Biodynamic gardening cultivates a profound sense of connection to the natural world, fostering respect for the delicate balance of life forces that sustain us.
  • This intimate relationship with nature enriches both the gardener and the garden, fostering a sense of stewardship and gratitude.

3. A Path to Regeneration:

  • Biodynamic principles offer a roadmap for healing the Earth and restoring vitality to our food systems.
  • By nourishing the soil, honoring biodiversity, and embracing cosmic rhythms, we can participate in a movement that nurtures life and promotes a thriving planet for generations to come.

Delving Deeper into the Cosmos: Advanced Biodynamic Techniques

We've established the core principles and practices of biodynamic gardening, but the journey doesn't end there. For those seeking to truly connect with the cosmic rhythms and unlock the full potential of their gardens, several advanced techniques await exploration.

Honing Your Sensitivity to Cosmic Forces

1. Observing the Subtle: Planetary Influences

Each planet in our solar system exerts a unique influence on plant growth. For example:

  • Mars: Associated with vitality and action, Mars days are ideal for seeding fast-growing plants like lettuce and radishes.
  • Venus: Ruling over love and beauty, Venus days favor planting flowering ornamentals and nurturing delicate fruits.
  • Saturn: Known for structure and boundaries, Saturn days are well-suited for tasks like transplanting seedlings and pruning woody plants.

By keeping a keen eye on planetary movements and aligning your gardening activities accordingly, you can tap into these subtle cosmic forces and potentially enhance your yields and harvest quality.

2. Harnessing the Moon's Cycles: The Biodynamic Sowing Calendar

The moon's waxing and waning phases have long been recognized as potent influences on plant growth. Biodynamic sowing calendars, meticulously crafted to correspond with these lunar cycles, offer detailed guidance for optimal planting times.

  • Root Days: During the waning moon, focus on planting root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and beets. The downward pull of the moon's gravity is believed to encourage vigorous root development.
  • Leaf Days: Under the waxing moon, prioritize leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale. The moon's upward pull is thought to stimulate lush foliage growth.
  • Flower Days: The days surrounding the full moon are auspicious for sowing flowering plants, fruit trees, and herbs. The moon's heightened energy is believed to promote vibrant blooms and bountiful harvests.

3. Rhythms of the Zodiac: A Deeper Dive

For the truly dedicated biodynamic gardener, delving into the specific influences of the zodiacal constellations can add another layer of complexity and potential benefit. Each constellation is associated with different plant parts and qualities, offering further guidance for aligning your gardening activities with cosmic rhythms.

For instance, planting tomatoes under the sign of Leo (associated with fire and fruit) or sowing leafy greens under Libra (linked to air and balance) might be seen as particularly auspicious choices. However, mastering this level of astrological integration requires dedication and ongoing study.

Tools and Preparations for the Advanced Biodynamic Gardener

1. The Seven Preparations: Catalysts for Life

Biodynamic preparations are potent natural concoctions crafted from specific plant and animal materials. These preparations, numbered BD500 through BD507, each address different aspects of soil health and plant vitality.

  • BD500 (Horn manure): Enhances soil fertility and humus formation.
  • BD501 (Horn silica): Strengthens plant stems and resistance to disease.
  • BD502 (Cow manure): Stimulates composting and microbial activity.
  • BD503 (Chamomile): Promotes flower formation and fruit quality.
  • BD504 (Nettle): Enhances leaf growth and chlorophyll production.
  • BD505 (Oak bark): Strengthens root systems and resistance to pests.
  • BD506 (Dandelion): Balances soil moisture and nutrient uptake.

Mastering the application and timing of these preparations takes time and experience, but their potential to invigorate your garden and elevate your biodynamic practice is significant.

2. The Dowsing Rod: Intuition Meets Practicality

The dowsing rod, a simple Y-shaped tool, can be used to intuitively locate underground water sources, ley lines (energetic lines in the Earth), and even compost piles with optimal activity. While its scientific validity is debated, many biodynamic gardeners swear by the dowsing rod as a valuable tool for connecting with the subtle energies of the land.

Conclusion: A Lifelong Journey with Biodynamic Gardening

Biodynamic gardening is not merely a set of techniques; it's a lifelong journey of observation, experimentation, and deepening connection with the natural world. As you delve deeper into its principles and practices, you'll witness firsthand the vibrant life force coursing through your garden, responding to your care and resonating with the rhythms of the cosmos.

THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
"I have swallowed up my enemies; I rejoice in my victory." —1 Samuel 2:1

Hannah prophesied that the bows of the mighty would be broken (1 Sm 2:4) and that the Lord would lift up the poor to be seated with nobles (1 Sm 2:8). Hannah does not explicitly prophesy the downfall of the powerful but only the empowerment of the poor.

Mary’s prophecy in today’s Gospel reading is much more revolutionary. She proclaimed that the proud would be confused and the mighty deposed from their thrones (Lk 1:51-52). In Mary’s prophecy, the lowly will not join the powerful but displace them. Mary’s prophecy was fulfilled in her Son, Jesus.

Herod understood the meaning of Christmas much better than most people. Herod realized that the birth of Jesus would be his own downfall (Lk 2:34), so he tried to kill Jesus (Mt 2:16).

The Christmas season is colored with blood-red martyrdoms.  It is revolutionary.  Christmas is an attack on the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Join Jesus’ army. Live and die for His kingdom. Join the Christmas-revolution.

Prayer: Father, I repent of sin and rejoin the forces of Your revolution.

Promise: "The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away." —Lk 1:53

Praise: "O King of all the nations, the only Joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature You fashioned from the dust."

HOW TO GET GOD TO SING
"Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel." —Zephaniah 3:14

Christmas is Jesus’ birthday. Birthday parties often feature shouting and singing. The birthday boy or girl usually shouts when opening the presents. Then, of course, everybody sings “Happy Birthday.” If Jesus is going to have a real birthday party this Christmas, we must give Him presents that will get Him to shout and “sing joyfully...as one sings at festivals” (Zep 3:17-18). Pretty packages, a cake, and candles will not get Jesus to sing. In fact, it’s difficult to give Him a birthday or Christmas gift because He already has everything — with one exception.

The present that gives God and all of heaven more joy than anything else is repentance and conversion (Lk 15:7). When we take the plank out of our own eye and then help take the speck out of others’ eyes, we get God to shout and sing (Mt 7:5). When we proceed “in haste into the hill country” (Lk 1:39) or into the highways and byways (Lk 14:23) and lead people to Christ, this also calls for a song. As He sings, we sing: “My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior” (Lk 1:46-47). Then we have a real birthday party and a real Christmas.

Prayer: Jesus, on this first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, I ask for a spiritual springtime.

Promise: "Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come! For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth." —Sg 2:10-12

Praise: "O Radiant Dawn, Splendor of eternal light, Sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death."

THE SCHOOL OF MARY
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you." —Luke 1:35

Mary is a model disciple. She is worthy of being imitated.

  • As the maidservant of the Lord (Lk 1:38), Mary did God’s will, no matter what it entailed.
  • She welcomed the Holy Spirit when the Spirit overshadowed her (Lk 1:35). Accordingly, she ministered with the Spirit’s power and gifts during her visit to Sts. Zechariah and Elizabeth. After three months in Mary’s school, Zechariah’s mouth was opened to speak a prophecy that the Church repeats daily in the Liturgy of the Hours (Lk 1:68-79).
  • Mary gave her body to the Lord (Lk 1:38). So many people these days will not let the Lord have their body. Often in today’s me-first culture, we hear: “It’s my body, and my choice of what I do with it.”
  • Mary regarded her body as a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19-20) and lived a holy lifestyle.
  • She was pure and holy. Her Child was “holy” (Lk 1:35). We disciples of Jesus are to likewise be pure (1 Jn 3:3) and holy (1 Pt 1:16).
  • Mary was a prophetess. She prophesied her Magnificat (Lk 1:46-55), which the Church likewise prays daily in the Liturgy of the Hours.

As Christmas approaches, enroll in Mary’s school of discipleship. Learn a lesson from the model disciple.

Prayer: Jesus, may I follow You as did Mary.

Promise: "The virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Immanuel." —Is 7:14

Praise: "O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at Your will the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead Your captive people into freedom."

I DID IT HIS WAY
"O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked." —Psalm 71:4

The Lord rescues His people by creating new people. Samson (Jgs 13:24) and St. John the Baptizer (Lk 1:24) from today’s readings are examples of this. However, our secular Western society is a “culture of death.” It doesn’t want many new people. It is contraceptive, exploitative, and abortifacient rather than fruitful and pro-life.

The Lord rescues His people by calling them to commitment. For example, Samson and John the Baptizer committed themselves to be lifelong Nazirites (Jgs 13:5; Lk 1:15). However, our society believes in avoiding commitment.

The Lord rescues His people by giving us the gift of faith. Those who have faith in Jesus as the Son of God conquer the world (1 Jn 5:5). However, through our secular humanistic culture, we have been programmed to be skeptical and doubtful. We are more like Zechariah (Lk 1:18) than Mary (Lk 1:34ff).

God’s ways are as different from ours as the heavens are above the earth (Is 55:8-9). Therefore, we had better change our ways, or we will not let the Lord rescue us. Then we will perish. Do it His way.

Prayer: Father, in this Advent, grace me to change my ways greatly and permanently.

Promise: "In these days the Lord is acting on my behalf; He has seen fit to remove my reproach among men." —Lk 1:25

Praise: "O Flower of Jesse's stem, You have been raised up as a Sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in Your presence; the nations bow down in worship before You. Come, let nothing keep You from coming to our aid."

CHRISTMAS CHRISTIANS
" 'The virgin shall be with Child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call Him Emmanuel,' a name which means 'God is with us.' " —Matthew 1:23

At the Incarnation, God became fully man while remaining fully divine. Without sexual relations (Mt 1:20, 25), Mary, God’s mother, conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. A star (Mt 2:2) and choirs of angels (Lk 2:13) announced Jesus’ birth. Jesus’ Incarnation was a greater event than the astounding release of the Israelites from their exile in Babylon, and the release from Babylon was greater than the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt (Jer 23:7-8). Thus the Incarnation was greater than both of these awesome events.

The Incarnation was the turning point in human history. In fact, we date human history as before the Incarnation (B.C.) and after it (A.D.). We pray about the Incarnation in the Creed, the “Hail Mary,” the “Angelus,” and the first joyful mystery of the rosary. We celebrate the Incarnation on March 25th, the feast of the Annunciation, and at every Christmas season.

We are called to be incarnational in our history, prayer, and celebrations. We are called to be Christmas Christians intensely and always. Praise Jesus, God made man, the Word made flesh!

Prayer: Father, make me a Christmas Christian.

Promise: "She is to have a Son and you are to name Him Jesus because He will save His people from their sins." —Mt 1:21

Praise: "O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, Who showed Yourself to Moses in the burning bush, Who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come, stretch out Your mighty hand to set us free."

HAPPINESS REACTS, JOY TRANSCENDS
"Rejoice always, pray constantly." ––1 Thessalonians 5:16-17, RSV-CE

“Rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength!” (Neh 8:10) These words are inspiring. Yet I often complain more than I rejoice. Thankfully, the Lord created us and is familiar with our limitations: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord” (Is 55:8).

We often mistakenly equate happiness with joy. Happiness, a fleeting emotion, is not the same as joy, an interior disposition. This is a challenge. But God’s grace is at work in our lives, so it’s not entirely beyond our grasp. Remember, St. Paul tells us that “we have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16).

Having the mind of Christ, look to Jesus for clues. “It was for this you were called, since Christ suffered for you…and left you an example, to have you follow in His footsteps” (1 Pt 2:21). This is the key to understanding joy (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2015). Jesus, although eternally beloved of the Father, was “a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Is 53:3 RSV-CE). His obedience made His joy complete (see Jn 15:11; 17:13).

Think about the crucifixion. Jesus was not “happy” anticipating the cross. But emotions did not conquer His fidelity in the Garden of Gethsemane: “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup from Me; yet not My will but Yours be done” (Lk 22:42).

Follow Jesus, our obedient and joyful Savior.

Prayer: Father, turn me from following unreliable emotions to a joy rooted in You.

Promise: "My spirit finds joy in God my Savior." ––Lk 1:47

Praise: "O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, You govern all creation with Your strong yet tender care."

FATHERS, REBUILD MY CHURCH
"To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons…" —Sirach 48:10

Research studies show that the only statistically significant factor in a child’s future church attendance is the church attendance of that child’s father during their childhood. Fathers play an irreplaceable role in their child’s life. Fathers have a short window of opportunity and they are to succeed by being present and faith-filled in the early years of their child’s life.

Everything the heavenly Father does He shows to His Son, Jesus (Jn 5:20). In imitation of God the Father, earthly fathers are well-advised to show their children everything they do, whether that is going to Church or digging a garden. Fathers must know that their children, like Jesus, “can only do what [they see their] father doing” (Jn 5:19). Fathers, what do your children see you do? What do they see you not doing? God gave fathers to their children to be examples of His fatherly love. Fathers, you hold in your hands, literally, the future of the world and the Church.

Fathers, by giving your lives sacrificially to the Lord, you can do what the Lord told to St. Francis of Assisi: “Rebuild My Church.” God’s plan for families is to “turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons” and daughters (Sir 48:10; Lk 1:17). In this fatherly love, the hearts of the children will be turned back to their fathers and a future of doom averted (Mal 3:24). God says: “Fathers, rebuild My Church!”

Prayer: Father, give fathers Your very own heart. Bless them with Your Shepherd's care for Your people, especially for their children.

Promise: "Elijah is indeed coming, and he will restore everything." —Mt 17:11

Praise: Though confined to a nursing home, Mary continues her ninety-one years of faithful service to the Lord by attending daily Mass.

YIELDING TO THE JUDGE
"What comparison can I use to describe this breed? They are like children squatting in the town squares, calling to their playmates: 'We piped you a tune but you did not dance! We sang you a dirge but you did not wail.' " —Matthew 11:16-17

If you read the comments section of any social media post, you will notice that people make judgments based on limited information. Though Jesus said that we should not judge (Mt 7:1), passing judgment is a commonplace activity in daily conversations or on social media. It is easy and lazy to make definitive judgments based upon limited information. We do not know another person’s motives, culpability, or the degree of formation of their conscience. Only the Lord knows the depths of a person’s heart (Jn 2:25).

Thanks be to God that He is our eternal Judge, rather than the courts of this world. God is “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4), “slow to anger and abounding in kindness” (Ps 103:8). He understands our weakness (Ps 103:14).

Rather than spending our time judging others, we should spend our life building our relationship with Jesus. Get to know Him as merciful Savior, before you meet Him as eternal Judge. “If you want to avoid judgment, stop passing judgment” (Mt 7:1). He is indeed the Judge, standing at the gate (Jas 5:9). The lyrics to a Christian song proclaim, “Look into your Judge’s eyes and see a Savior there.”

Prayer: Father, I plead guilty and throw myself upon Your mercy. I accept Your Son, Jesus, as my Salvation and the Holy Spirit as my Lawyer for the Defense.

Promise: "I, the Lord, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go." —Is 48:17

Praise: Marcie was a witness to openness toward life as she received with great joy the conception of her first child shortly after her marriage.

IN THE "I" OF THE STORM
"I am the Lord, your God, Who grasp your right hand." —Isaiah 41:13

As long as the great I AM is Lord of your life, you have no reason to fear the storms of life (Is 41:13-14). Even if you feel as weak and worthless as a worm or maggot, the great I AM can make you so powerful that you will crush mountains (Is 41:14-15). If you submit your “I” to the I AM, He will open up rivers and springs in the desert to remove your afflictions and provide for your needs (Is 41:17-18). The desert of the “I,” ego, and self will be transformed into the life-giving forest of the I AM (see Is 41:19) — if we die to “I” to live for Him (Lk 9:23).

The main problem in life is that many of us try to solve our problems ourselves. Without Jesus, the great I AM (Jn 8:24, 28, 58), we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not” (Prv 3:5). “Rely not on your wealth; say not: ‘I have the power.’ Rely not on your strength in following the desires of your heart” (Sir 5:1-2). “Commit to the Lord your way; trust in Him, and He will act” (Ps 37:5). The worst mistake you can make is to try to “do it yourself.” The best thing you can do is to “let it be done” to you according to God’s Word (Lk 1:38). The “I’s have it,” that is, the problems. The I AM alone has the answers. Die to “I”; live for the I AM.

Prayer: Father, not my will but Yours be done (Mt 26:39).

Promise: "I solemnly assure you, history has not known a man born of woman greater than John the Baptizer. Yet the least born into the kingdom of God is greater than he." —Mt 11:11

Praise: Once St. John heard Jesus ask him what reward he desired for his works of faith. John replied: "Lord, I ask no other recompense than to suffer and be condemned for Thy love."

RESTING WITH THE YOKE ON - One Bread, One Body, 12/13/2023

RESTING WITH THE YOKE ON
"Take My yoke upon your shoulders and learn from Me." —Matthew 11:29

Because God doesn’t grow weary (Is 40:28), and because we belong to God (Rm 14:7-8) and abide in God (Jn 15:4), His Word assures us that we won’t grow weary when we do His will (Is 40:29-31). God gives us strength as we bear the burden we are meant to bear, which is His yoke (Mt 11:29). The strength we need, and the rest we need, comes as we do His will.

Jesus came to remove the oppressive yoke of our sins, which burdens and weighs us down. He replaces that sinful yoke with His yoke, what He terms “My burden” (Mt 11:30). Jesus shares the yoke with us and even calls our burden “His” burden. Thus we “find rest” in bearing the burdens of this yoke by coming to Jesus, Who is right beside us in the other loop of the yoke. We can’t physically distance ourselves from Him, since He is yoked right next to us. However, as many married couples can appreciate, someone can be right next to you, yet a million miles away. Therefore, we find rest by being present to Jesus as we approach Him with humility, gratitude, and our full attention.

We have a choice to make in bearing Jesus’ yoke. We can regard it as a cross to bear; we might say “What a burden!” (Mal 1:13) In this mindset, we might be following Jesus, but complaining and grumbling like the Israelites in the desert (see Nm 14:2ff). Alternatively, we can come to Jesus (Mt 11:28), accept His strength and help, and willingly go wherever He takes us. If we do this, we will find rest, even in the midst of bearing His burden.

Prayer: Father, may I always "strive to enter into [Your] rest" (Heb 4:11) and thus find Your strength.

Promise: "He pardons all your iniquities, He heals all your ills." —Ps 103:3

Praise: St. Lucy's mother opposed her vow of virginity in service of Jesus. Jesus healed her mother's physical condition and opened her heart to her daughter's vocation.

Titans Stage Miraculous Comeback to Stun Dolphins on Monday Night Football

In one of the most incredible comebacks of the NFL season, the Tennessee Titans stunned the Miami Dolphins 28-27 on Monday Night Football. With less than three minutes remaining in the game and trailing by 14 points, the Titans unleashed a furious rally that culminated in a game-winning touchdown with just seconds left on the clock.

The victory was a monumental one for the Titans, who improved to 5-8 on the season and kept their playoff hopes alive. It also dealt a major blow to the Dolphins, who had been riding high atop the AFC East and were considered one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl.

Dolphins Dominate Early

The Dolphins seemed poised to cruise to victory early on. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was sharp, completing 20 of his 25 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. also had a strong performance, rushing for 112 yards and a touchdown.

The Titans, on the other hand, struggled offensively for much of the game. Rookie quarterback Will Levis looked shaky at times, completing only 15 of his 30 passes for 187 yards. The Titans also committed several costly penalties, which helped the Dolphins maintain momentum.

Titans Mount Improbable Comeback

With the Dolphins leading 27-13 late in the fourth quarter, it appeared that the Titans were headed for defeat. However, Levis led the Titans on a pair of remarkable touchdown drives in the final minutes of the game.

The first scoring drive was capped off by a 15-yard touchdown pass from Levis to wide receiver Treylon Burks with 1:50 remaining. On the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, Levis found tight end Austin Hooper for the score, cutting the Dolphins' lead to 27-21.

Following a Miami punt, Levis and the Titans offense went back to work. Levis completed passes of 19 and 15 yards to move the ball into Dolphins territory. With just seconds remaining on the clock, Levis delivered a strike to wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

Levis Shines in the Spotlight

Levis, who was making just his third career start, was the hero of the game for the Titans. He finished with 327 passing yards and two touchdowns, displaying a poise and clutchness that belied his rookie status.

"I'm just so proud of our guys," Levis said after the game. "We never gave up, even when things looked bleak. We just kept fighting, and it paid off in the end."

Dolphins Left to Rue Missed Opportunities

The Dolphins were left to rue their missed opportunities after the game. They had several chances to put the game away in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to capitalize.

"We just made too many mistakes," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. "We had a chance to win this game, but we didn't take advantage of it. We need to learn from our mistakes and move on."

What's Next for Both Teams?

The Titans will look to build on their momentum when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The Dolphins, meanwhile, will try to get back on track when they travel to face the Buffalo Bills.

Historic Comeback

The Titans' comeback was one of the most memorable in recent NFL history. It was the first time since 2003 that a team had overcome a 14-point deficit in the final three minutes of a game and won in regulation.

The victory also proved that the Titans are a team that can never be counted out. Despite their up-and-down season, they remain in the thick of the AFC playoff race.

Conclusion

The Titans' thrilling comeback victory over the Dolphins was a testament to the power of perseverance and never giving up. It was a game that will be remembered for years to come, and it served as a reminder that anything is possible in the NFL.

Key Statistics:

  • Titans: 327 passing yards, 2 touchdowns
  • Dolphins: 267 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 112 rushing yards, 1 touchdown
  • Titans: 5-8 record
  • Dolphins: 9-5 record

Additional Notes:

  • The Titans were without star running back Derrick Henry for the second straight game.
  • The Dolphins were also without several key players, including wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and safety Jevon Holland.
  • The game was played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
  • The attendance was 75,417.

WHEN MARY VISITS - One Bread, One Body, 12/12/2023

WHEN MARY VISITS
"Mary set out, proceeding in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah, where she entered Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth." —Luke 1:39-40

When Mary visited Elizabeth, both St. Elizabeth and her baby were filled with the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:41). Then Mary proclaimed the greatness of the Lord (Lk 1:46) and announced a spiritual revolution in which the mighty would be deposed and replaced by the lowly (Lk 1:52).

When Mary visited the area now called Mexico City, eight million people were converted to Jesus in seven years. This launched a spiritual revolution which put an end to the demonic human sacrifice of thousands of children and adults.

Jesus may be sending His mother to visit us now. If we accept Mary as our mother on Jesus’ terms, we will have a new Pentecost (see Acts 1:14ff). This will result in the conversion of millions and in a spiritual revolution that will put an end to the surgical and chemical abortions of many millions of children each year.

Instead of rejecting Jesus and His mother, let us make room for them in our lives (see Lk 2:7). In this way, we will have hope, abundant and eternal life, and a true Christmas. Who are we that the mother of our Lord should come to us? (see Lk 1:43)

Prayer: Jesus, make me as open to Your mother as was Elizabeth.

Promise: "See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord." —Zec 2:14

Praise: "My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior, for He has looked upon His servant in her lowliness; all ages to come shall call me blessed" (Lk 1:46-48).
