TEACHING US HOW TO FISH
"They were fishermen. [Jesus] said to them, 'Come after Me and I will make you fishers of men.' " —Matthew 4:18-19

The first calling Jesus gave His disciples was to be “fishers of men.” To Jesus’ first four disciples, the term “fishers of men” meant that:

  • Jesus wanted to use their work experience to build His kingdom.
  • Jesus was calling them out of the commercial fishing business (Mt 4:20).
  • Jesus was calling them to leave father and family (Mt 4:22).
  • They were to catch people, that is, lead people to Christ.
  • Their new kind of fishing would likewise be hard, back-breaking work with long and difficult hours (see Jn 21:3, 6).
  • They would never catch any fish or men except by the grace of God.

St. Andrew, a fisherman, understood what Jesus meant, and he immediately fished for his brother, Simon (Jn 1:40-41). Andrew was such a champion “fisher of men” that when some Greeks came to St. Philip and asked to see Jesus, “Philip went to tell Andrew” (Jn 12:22). May we be like Andrew and understand that discipleship is receiving the grace to make a radical decision to evangelize no matter what the cost. Let's go fishing with Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I live and die to evangelize.

Promise: "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." —Rm 10:9

Praise: "The first thing [Andrew] did was seek out his brother Simon and tell him, 'We have found the Messiah!' " (Jn 1:41)

BY THE BOOK
"The book of the living was opened. The dead were judged according to their conduct as recorded on the scrolls." —Revelation 20:12

At the Last Judgment, the Lord is seated on “a large white throne” (Rv 20:11). You are standing before His throne as He opens “the book of the living” (Rv 20:12). You hope the Lord will find your name in this book, for “anyone whose name was not found inscribed in the book of the living was hurled into [the] pool of fire” (Rv 20:15).

As you wait, you remember what the Lord told Moses: “Him only who has sinned against Me will I strike out of My book” (Ex 32:33). You know all your actions are written down in this book (Ps 139:16), and you remember the many times you have sinned. You begin to fear for your eternal soul.

The record of your conduct is now being read from the book. You stand amazed as God recounts all the tears you have shed (Ps 56:9). An entry in the book states that you have trusted and feared Him (Mal 3:16). However, none of your sins have been read to the heavenly assembly. Jesus shows you the pages containing your deeds, and there are many gaps in the written record of your life. He says: “Each time you repented, I cast your sins into the depths of the sea” (see Mi 7:19; Jer 31:34; Ps 51:11; 103:12). Then Jesus says: “Come, share your Master’s joy!” (Mt 25:21)

If you repent (Rv 3:3) and live a life worthy of your calling (Eph 4:1; Rv 3:4), Jesus promises: “I will never erase [your] name from the book of the living, but will acknowledge [you] in the presence of My Father and His angels” (Rv 3:5).

Prayer: Jesus, my Savior, help me to repent of every sin, forgive all who have hurt me, and lead others to receive Your mercy.

Promise: "Know that the reign of God is near." —Lk 21:31

Praise: When the Bible became God's living Word for Marvin, he received the grace to permanently turn from his sins.

THANKS IN THE END
"When you see Jerusalem encircled by soldiers, know that its devastation is near." —Luke 21:20

Jesus said that Jerusalem would be destroyed. Since Jerusalem was a city specially chosen in God’s plan of salvation, Jesus’ prediction seemed impossible. Less than forty years later, in 70 A.D., Jesus’ prophecy was fulfilled.

St. John, in the book of Revelation, prophesied that the Roman empire, symbolized by Babylon, would fall (Rv 18:2). This most stable of empires fell.

Jesus said that this world will be destroyed and will pass away (see Lk 21:26, 33; 2 Pt 3:7). He was right about Jerusalem’s destruction, and He is right about the world’s end.

Not only are cities, empires, and planet earth in the process of falling apart, we all are falling apart (see 2 Cor 4:16). Our reaction to this fact should not be denial or despair but thanksgiving. Like a grain of wheat, we must fall to the earth and die in order to bear fruit (Jn 12:24). We must die in Christ to rise with Him (2 Tm 2:11).

Thank God that the world is passing away and we are falling apart. Thank God there is so much more than this life. Thank God for endings which open the door to new beginnings (see Lk 20:38). Thank God not only for what’s going well but for what’s going down. Thank God.

Prayer: Father, make me more thankful each day as I get closer to death and home.

Promise: "Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful song." —Ps 100:1-2

Praise: Sarah prayed for years for her drug-addicted husband to become a believer in Jesus. Finally, she gave up on him. On the same day she silently made plans to leave him, he gave his life to Jesus, was freed from his addiction, and told her that he loved her. They now evangelize together.

"DO NOT STIFLE THE SPIRIT" (1 Thes 5:19)
"I bid you resolve not to worry about your defense beforehand." —Luke 21:14

The Father and the Son have sent us the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete (Jn 14:26). The word Paraclete can be translated “Defense Lawyer.” When you have an expert lawyer for your defense, it is not a good strategy to then independently prepare your own defense. You would be tying the hands of your expert legal defense. You might even lose your trial, when otherwise your Defense Lawyer would have triumphed. This is called “stifling the Holy Spirit” (see 1 Thes 5:19).

All you really need to do is listen to the Paraclete and trust completely in Him. At the proper time, Jesus, through the action of the Paraclete, “will give you words and a wisdom which none of your adversaries can take exception to or contradict” (Lk 21:15).

So, do not worry. The Paraclete is handling your case. Simply keep the lines of communication open. Each day, pray, read the Scriptures (Acts 17:11), worship, and if possible, go to Mass. Trust the Holy Spirit more than you would trust the world’s most expert legal team. The Holy Spirit is the Master Communicator. Therefore, make a daily appointment to listen to the Spirit, and “hear what God proclaims” (Ps 85:9). “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, instead of preparing my defense beforehand, I will sit and listen each day for Your guidance. Give me "ears open to obedience" (Ps 40:7).

Promise: "All nations shall come and worship in Your presence." —Rv 15:4

Praise: Through faithfully reading the Scriptures, Doris was able to allow Jesus to conquer her anxieties.

END TIMING
"Now is the time to reap." —Revelation 14:15

At the end, Jesus, the King of kings (Rv 17:14), will come riding on a white cloud with a gold crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand (Rv 14:14). He will gather the harvest of justice (Rv 14:16). Then an angel will come from the temple in heaven. He will also wield a sharp sickle to gather the grapes of wrath (Rv 14:19). We will all be harvested, either by our loving Lord or by the “grim reaper.”

“When will this be, Teacher? And what will be the sign that it is going to happen?” (Lk 21:7) The answer is: Soon and “very soon” we are going to see the King (Rv 1:1). “Happy is the man who reads this prophetic message, and happy are those who hear it and heed what is written in it, for the appointed time is near!” (Rv 1:3) “As regards specific times and moments, brothers, we do not need to write you; you know very well that the day of the Lord is coming like a thief in the night. Just when people are saying, ‘Peace and security,’ ruin will fall on them with the suddenness of pains overtaking a woman in labor, and there will be no escape. You are not in the dark, brothers, that the day should catch you off guard, like a thief. No, all of you are children of light and of the day. We belong neither to darkness nor to night; therefore let us not be asleep like the rest, but awake and sober!” (1 Thes 5:1-6) “The One Who gives this testimony says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon!’ Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rv 22:20)

Prayer: Jesus, may I be ready for Your final coming at any time. Make me ready now.

Promise: "He comes to rule the earth." —Ps 96:13

Praise: Ron was ashamed to praise the Lord publicly. One day, while shaving, the Lord gently told Ron that he was afraid to yield control of his life to God. Ron abandoned himself to Jesus, and within a week, he received the gift of praising God in tongues.

HOW TO GO TO HEAVEN
"I heard a sound from heaven." —Revelation 14:2

To be with the Lord forever in heaven, we must:

  • decide to have the Lord’s name written on our foreheads (Rv 14:1), that is, be baptized in His name and live our Baptisms fully and publicly,
  • sing a new hymn before God’s throne (Rv 14:3) as we worship Him “in Spirit and truth” (Jn 4:24),
  • let the Lord ransom us from the world (Rv 14:3) and “have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords” (1 Jn 2:15),
  • be “pure and follow the Lamb wherever He goes” (Rv 14:4), and
  • let the Holy Spirit purify our lives, hearts, and lips to make us holy (see Rv 14:5; Heb 12:14).

Specifically, to be with the Lord forever in heaven, we must give the Lord not only our surplus (see Lk 21:4), part of our lives, or most of our lives; rather, we must give Him all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength, and all our minds (Lk 10:27).

Naturally, we refuse to give our “all” to the Lord (see Mk 10:22). Supernaturally, when the Holy Spirit graces us to believe that Jesus loves us so much that He died on the cross for us, then we respond in love and give ourselves totally to Him. We receive the new nature in which we live with the Lord forever (2 Cor 5:17). In love, give “all” to Jesus and live with Jesus forever in heaven.

Prayer: Father, may I go to be with You in heaven as soon as You will it.

Promise: "Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain." —Ps 24:3-4

Praise: God filled St. Catherine with so much wisdom that fifty pagan philosophers were converted to Christianity through her influence.

"...Jesus Christ the faithful Witness, the First-Born from the dead and Ruler of the kings of earth." —Revelation 1:5

What “rules” your life? Does the clock rule you? Does the opinion of your neighbors rule you? Does your boss rule you? Your spouse? Your children’s needs? Your political party? Your body’s appearance? The culture’s expectations? Your favorite sports team? Many things compete for your allegiance. They all want to make you their obedient and faithful subject.

Jesus is not simply one more “thing” competing for your attention and allegiance. Jesus is “King of the Universe,” as the title of today’s solemnity proclaims, “Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.” Jesus is “Ruler of the kings of earth” (Rv 1:5). As King of the Universe, Lord Jesus does not compete for your allegiance; He demands it. He is Ruler of all (1 Tm 6:15). He is almighty and absolutely sovereign, to be instantly obeyed.

Scripture presents Jesus as “gentle and humble of heart” (Mt 11:29). He is meek, patient, kind, and compassionate. He understands us and gives His life for us. He is full of love and “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4). So it is possible for us to forget that Jesus is a mighty King. Recall that He forcefully ejects the money-changers from the Temple and drives out animals and merchants from the Temple area (Jn 2:15). He casts out demons (Mk 1:27). He silences His opponents (see Mt 22:34, 46).

Today, fall on your knees before the Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. With all people on earth, shout: “Your Kingdom come!” (Mt 6:10). Pledge your attention and allegiance to Him.

Prayer: King Jesus, with all of mankind my knees bow before You (Phil 2:10). I freely choose to bow before You today in awe, adoration, and worship. Be the King and Ruler of my entire life.

Promise: "Anyone committed to the truth hears My voice." —Jn 18:37

Praise: King Jesus, reign in glory and majesty. Alleluia!

WITNESS STAND
"Fire will come out of the mouths of these witnesses to devour their enemies." —Revelation 11:5

As members of the Church, we are olive trees (Rv 11:4), that is, we are anointed by the Holy Spirit. Because we are olive trees, we are lampstands (Rv 11:4). We are the light of the world (Mt 5:14). Because we are the light of the world and because those who practice evil hate the light (Jn 3:20), we are witnesses, that is, martyrs. Because we are witnesses, “the breath of life which comes from God” will return to us and we will rise gloriously from the dead (Rv 11:11).

Most people like the beginning and end of this series. Everyone wants the power which accompanies being anointed. Everyone wants to rise victoriously from the dead. However, not many want the witness of martyrdom. Nevertheless, we won’t be olive trees and lampstands for long if we refuse to suffer as the Lord’s witnesses. Likewise, we rise because we’ve lived and died for Jesus as His witnesses. Therefore, the key to the Christian life is being a witness. Witnesses always are olive trees and lampstands, who will surely rise in glory from the dead.

Be Jesus’ witness right where you are and then even to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).

Prayer: Jesus, may I receive power from on high to be Your witness (see Lk 24:49; Acts 1:8).

Promise: "God is not the God of the dead but of the living. All are alive for Him." —Lk 20:38

Praise: Pope St. Clement was the third pope after St. Peter. He is the earliest of the Church Fathers, and accordingly, his writings are vitally important, because he had heard the preaching of the twelve apostles.

“MY SWEET LORD” - One Bread, One Body, 11/22/2024

"MY SWEET LORD"
"How sweet to my palate are Your promises, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" —Psalm 119:103

From His cross, Jesus utters in agony, “I thirst” (see Jn 19:28). Elsewhere in St. John’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well, “Give Me a drink” (Jn 4:7). Interestingly, the text of John 4 never mentions Jesus getting a drink of actual water from the woman. Yet John 4 ends with Jesus apparently no longer thirsty, because the woman receives Him; her faith provided the drink for which Jesus thirsted.

Today’s psalm response is from Psalm 119:103, the verse highlighted above: “How sweet to my taste is Your promise.” The psalmist tells the Lord that the promises of God, as written down in the law of Moses in the first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch, are sweet to his taste. However, I invite you to consider today’s psalm response as coming from the mouth of the crucified Jesus. He is hanging in utter agony upon His cross, and He speaks, saying “I thirst” (see Jn 19:28). He has come to light a fire on earth, and He wishes the blaze were ignited (Lk 12:49). When we fulfill our promises to Jesus, such as renewing our baptismal promises, our promises in the sacraments, and our promise to spend our lives in His service, we are giving Him a drink (see Jn 4:7). This is what Jesus thirsts for, and this is the honey on His tongue. It is as if the crucified Jesus is saying to us: “How sweet to My taste is your promise.” Give Jesus a drink. Promise to spend your life spreading His Good News to the world.

Prayer: Jesus, I will spend my life quenching Your thirst by living out my promises to You.

Promise: "The law of Your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces." —Ps 119:72

Praise: St. Cecilia and her converts, her husband Valerian and brother-in-law Tiburtius, were martyred for their faith in Jesus.

A GOOD CRY - One Bread, One Body, 11/21/2024

A GOOD CRY
"I wept bitterly…" —Revelation 5:4

St. John shed many tears because no one had been found worthy to open the heavenly scroll (Rv 5:3-4). That scroll represented the revelation of God’s will, which was the only way to resolve the world’s problems. John wept because the world would be left mired in its problems without hope. Jesus also shed many tears in today’s Gospel passage (Lk 19:41). He wept over Jerusalem because the path to peace was shown to the city, but it refused to follow that path (Lk 19:42) and its rebellion would be deadly (Lk 19:43-44).

It is good to weep for people when their obstinacy blocks the will of God. This is a godly sorrow, and “sorrow for God’s sake produces a repentance without regrets, whereas worldly sorrow brings death” (2 Cor 7:10). Godly mourning and sorrow can even bring divine protection; those who mourned for Jerusalem’s sins were spared during its destruction (Ez 9:4-6). Jesus calls this godly mourning “blessed” (see Mt 5:4). We weep as God’s will is blocked, even as we pray and work for His will to be done on this earth (Ps 126:5-6).

Today is the patronal feast of Presentation Ministries: the Presentation of Mary in the Temple. Mary grew up to become the Sorrowful Mother, weeping many tears in godly sorrow. Her life of mourning, sorrow, and victory is proof that our godly tears are not in vain. Jesus spoke to the weeping women of Jerusalem (Lk 23:27ff). He also speaks words of comfort to those who weep for God’s will to be done. One day, Jesus will wipe every tear from the eyes of those who mourn, and there shall be no further mourning (Rv 21:4). God sees and cherishes your every tear (Ps 56:9).

Prayer: Father, I choose to offer my sorrows to You rather than drown them in worldly distractions.

Promise: "The Lord loves His people, and He adorns the lowly with victory." —Ps 149:4

Praise: "His mercy is from age to age on those who fear Him" (Lk 1:50).

HOLY MASS: A HEAVENLY EXPERIENCE
"Holy, holy, holy..." —Revelation 4:8

The book of Revelation gives us a vision that lifts our minds and our spirits from an earthly to a heavenly perspective. St. John’s vision helps us to set our hearts on heaven rather than earth (Col 3:1-2). More than anything else on earth, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass enables us to have not only a heavenly perspective, but even a heavenly experience. In the Mass, Jesus is present in the Eucharist. Jesus Himself said: that He is the Living Bread come down from heaven, given to us so that we may eat and never die (see Jn 6:50, 51). In the Person of the Eucharistic Jesus, heaven is wedded to earth (Easter Vigil Exsultet).

In the Mass, we join with the angels and saints as they sing, “Holy, holy, holy” (Rv 4:8). In the Mass, we spend our lives in heavenly worship and earthly charity until Jesus returns. At Mass, we “praise the Lord in His sanctuary” (Ps 150:1). We wait in joyful hope for Jesus to come again and bring us with Him to heaven. In the Mass, we have “an open door to heaven” (Rv 4:1) as we join in the heavenly worship “around the throne” of God (Rv 4:3). In the Mass, “the Eucharist is celebrated in communion with the whole Church in heaven and on earth” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1354).

At Mass, “we have our citizenship in heaven; it is from there that we eagerly await the coming of our Savior” Jesus Christ (Phil 3:20). “Participation in the Holy Sacrifice [of the Mass]...unites us even now to the Church in heaven” (Catechism, 1419). Go to Mass as often as possible, even daily. Experience heaven on earth. Prepare for life in heaven.

Prayer: Jesus, I invest my life in taking up the cup of salvation, the Bread of Life, and calling on Your name at Mass (Ps 116:12-13).

Promise: "Whoever has will be given more, but the one who has not will lose the little he has." —Lk 19:26

Praise: Praying together as a family has helped the Wesley family weather the storms of health problems.

SEEING THE BLINDNESS - One Bread, One Body, 11/19/2024

Psalm 15:2-5

SEEING THE BLINDNESS
"Today salvation has come to this house." —Luke 19:9

Salvation came to Zacchaeus’ house when Jesus, the Savior, came to his house and Zacchaeus responded: “I give half my belongings, Lord, to the poor. If I have defrauded anyone in the least, I pay him back fourfold” (Lk 19:8). Zacchaeus accepted Jesus and salvation by loving the poor, making radical changes in his lifestyle, and admitting that he may have defrauded others.

When we sin, we become spiritually blind and even blind to being blind. Nevertheless, Zacchaeus inferred that he may have been blind to injustices that he had done. This is a great grace when someone prays to be cleansed of their unknown faults (Ps 19:13) and thereby admits at least the possibility of spiritual blindness. St. Paul had this grace when he stated: “Mind you, I have nothing on my conscience. But that does not mean that I am declaring myself innocent” (1 Cor 4:4). Paul did not rule out the possibility of spiritual blindness. In contrast, the church of Laodicea did not realize how wretched, pitiable, poor, naked, and blind it was (Rv 3:17). This church needed to have its sight restored by smearing the ointment of repentance on its eyes (see Rv 3:18). However, like some of the Pharisees, the church of Laodicea said: “But we see,” and their sin remained (Jn 9:41).

Eventually, blindness to spiritual blindness can become the unforgivable sin of blasphemy against the Spirit (Mt 12:31). How can we ask forgiveness when we’ve lost the sense of sin! With Zacchaeus, let us admit the possibility of spiritual blindness in our lives. This is part of accepting salvation into our houses.

Prayer: Father, open the "eyes of [our] hearts" (Eph 1:18, RSV-CE) and of all who read this.

Promise: "I will never erase his name from the book of the living, but will acknowledge him in the presence of My Father." —Rv 3:5

Praise: When Thomas decided to forgive, his elevated blood pressure went down.

THE BOOK OF REVELATION
"This is the revelation God gave." —Revelation 1:1

The Bible is a tremendous revelation the Lord has given to us through His Church. Thus, it is appropriate for the Bible to end with the book of Revelation. This book is given:

  • “to Jesus Christ” (Rv 1:1),
  • through Jesus to us who are His servants (Rv 1:1),
  • to us by an angel sent to John (Rv 1:1),
  • to show us “what must happen very soon” (Rv 1:1),
  • as a “prophetic message” (Rv 1:3),
  • to bless us (Rv 1:3),
  • to the Church (see Rv 1:4), and
  • to call us to repent and return to our “early love” of God (Rv 2:4).

In the book of Revelation, the Lord has saved the best wine until last (see Jn 2:10). It is a great privilege to enter into the mystery of the book of Revelation. Therefore:

  • thank the Lord for the book of Revelation,
  • ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to all truth in Revelation (see Jn 16:13),
  • read the whole book of Revelation in the next two weeks, not only the excerpts read at Mass each day,
  • live what you read in Revelation, and
  • share what the Holy Spirit teaches you in Revelation.

Let us end the Church’s year learning, loving, and living Revelation.

Prayer: Father, through the book of Revelation, prepare me for Your Son's final coming.

Promise: Lord, "I want to see." —Lk 18:41

Praise: Sts. Peter and Paul, fisherman and tent-maker, became the great apostles to the Jews and Gentiles, respectively (see Gal 2:7-9).

“HE IS NEAR” (Mk 13:29) - One Bread, One Body, 11/17/2024

"HE IS NEAR" (Mk 13:29)
"Then men will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. He will dispatch His angels and assemble His chosen." —Mark 13:26-27

In these last two weeks of the Church year, the Church pays special attention to the Second Coming of Christ. Focusing on Jesus’ return in power is critical for our life in Christ and our spiritual well-being.

Some readers of One Bread, One Body live in foreign countries and are actively persecuted for their faith in Jesus. Some of our foreign printers and distributors risk their lives regularly to spread God’s Word. If you “face death every day” (1 Cor 15:31) for your life of courageous faith, be encouraged. The Lord Jesus will always have the final word. Your Redeemer lives, and your eyes will see Him (Jb 19:25, 27). “He is near, even at the door” (Mk 13:29; Rv 3:20), and you will see Him coming with great power and glory to vindicate you (Mk 13:26-27). “Stand erect and hold your heads high, for your deliverance is near at hand” (Lk 21:28).

For those who don’t live for the Lord, Jesus’ Second Coming will not be humble and meek as was His first coming. There will be no gentle Infant lying in an obscure manger. His Second Coming will shake the cosmos in “great power and glory” (Mk 13:26; cf 2 Pt 3:10). Few noticed Him in Bethlehem; this time “every eye shall see Him, even of those who” reject Him (Rv 1:7). He will come as Judge (Jas 5:9). Therefore, repent now before it’s too late! Reconcile with Jesus now, for you know not the day nor the hour of His return (Mk 13:32).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I know You as Savior as well as Judge.

Promise: "You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in Your presence, the delights at Your right hand forever." —Ps 16:11

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who will come again in glory!

"FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET"
"Will He delay long over them, do you suppose? I tell you, He will give them swift justice." —Luke 18:7-8

God’s timing is different than ours. “This point must not be overlooked, dear friends. In the Lord’s eyes, one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years are as a day” (2 Pt 3:8). This means that God is both very slow and very fast by our standards (see 2 Pt 3:9). We often emphasize God’s supposed slowness. Yet we should also focus on His speed. God sometimes works “in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye” (1 Cor 15:52). God promises to give us “swift justice” (Lk 18:8).

However, the Lord will not force His justice or His swiftness on us. We must pray always and not lose heart (Lk 18:1). Otherwise, we will cause the Lord to delay (Lk 18:7) in stopping the gross injustices of abortion, racism, “ethnic cleansings,” starvation, and other catastrophic evils.

To pray always and receive God’s swift justice, we must have faith. “Faith is confident assurance concerning what we hope for, and conviction about things we do not see” (Heb 11:1). Faith is a gift which the Lord freely gives. Once again, we must pray to receive faith (Lk 17:5), exercise the faith we have, and nourish our faith through hearing God’s Word, for faith comes through hearing, and hearing by God’s Word (Rm 10:17).

Grow in faith; pray always; receive swift justice in a severely unjust world. “The God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet” (Rm 16:20). Come Jesus — swiftly!

Prayer: Father, I will hasten Your Son's final coming (2 Pt 3:12) by my holiness and obedience.

Promise: "Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice; he shall never be moved." —Ps 112:5-6

Praise: Though living two very different vocations, one as a mother of eight children and the other as a Benedictine nun, Sts. Margaret and Gertrude both laid down their lives for Love.

FUTURE NOW - One Bread, One Body, 11/15/2024

FUTURE NOW
"As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. They ate and drank, they took husbands and wives, right up to the day Noah entered the ark — and when the flood came, it destroyed them all." —Luke 17:26-27

At the end of the world, many people will not be prepared. This has also been the case with Noah’s flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and other catastrophes. Thus, to be prepared for the future, we must be prepared in the present for anything.

Are you ready for the end of the world and Jesus’ final coming now? Are you ready to die now? Are you ready to be martyred for Jesus now? If we’re not ready to die now, then we’re not ready to live the abundant life in Christ.

To be ready for anything now, we must be living in and for Jesus alone. Jesus is our only Hope, and the only Hope we need. Jesus is the Lord of the past, the present, and the future (see Heb 13:8). Jesus is the only name “in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12). Without Jesus, we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). In Jesus, nothing is impossible (Lk 1:37). Jesus is God, Who “is Love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him” (1 Jn 4:16). “There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rm 8:1). When Jesus is our Life (see Jn 14:6; 11:25), we have eternal life. In Jesus, we will escape “the wrath to come” (1 Thes 1:10), for the Lord has plans for our welfare, not for woe — plans to give us a future full of hope (Jer 29:11). Give your life totally to Jesus now. Then look forward in joy to the future.

Prayer: Father, make all who read this holy in every aspect of their conduct (1 Pt 1:15).

Promise: "Look out that you yourselves do not lose what you have worked for; you must receive your reward in full." —2 Jn 8

Praise: One of St. Albert's greatest works was to help in discipling of one of his students, St. Thomas Aquinas.

O SAY, CAN YOU SEE?
"You cannot tell by careful watching when the reign of God will come." —Luke 17:20

We need eyes of faith to see the kingdom of God (2 Cor 5:7). We cannot observe the kingdom of God with natural eyesight, as Jesus states in today’s Gospel passage (Lk 17:20; see also 1 Cor 2:14-15). In the Sacrament of Baptism, we receive spiritual sight. However, if we do not live out our Baptism, we blind that spiritual sight and dwell “in darkness” (Mt 4:16).

God sent Jesus to be our light (see Jn 1:9). But we must live in His light or we continue to live in darkness (1 Jn 1:6-7). Many of us have loved ones who reject faith and reject the Lord. Yes, some of this is due to rebellion, yet it is also a blindness. A spiritually blind person cannot see where he is going spiritually; it is all darkness to him. He or she literally cannot see the kingdom of God, as Jesus says (Lk 17:20).

Jesus says to us, His disciples: “You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:14). Jesus has sent us to our loved ones to be light for them. They cannot see the kingdom of God, but they can see us. We are beacons by which they can begin to see God’s kingdom.

The third luminous mystery of the Rosary is “The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God and the Call to Repentance.” The Word of God has power to lead to salvation (Rm 1:16). Jesus, the Living Word (Heb 4:12), came to open the eyes of the blind (Lk 4:18). Proclaim the sight-giving Word of God. Live a kingdom-lifestyle. Be a light shining in the darkness (Jn 5:35) to light the way to the Kingdom of God.

Prayer: Father, shine so brightly through me that many will find their way to You.

Promise: "The Lord sets captives free; the Lord gives sight to the blind." —Ps 146:7-8

Praise: When Beth decided to give God the first hour of the day in prayer, the rest of her day fell into godly order.

SAVING SAYINGS - One Bread, One Body, 11/13/2024

SAVING SAYINGS
"He saved us." —Titus 3:5

“When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us” (Ti 3:4-5). “He saved us through the baptism of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit He lavished on us through Jesus Christ our Savior” (Ti 3:5-6). We have been saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:5, 8; see also Lk 17:19). Jesus, Whose name means “Yahweh saves,” is our Savior, our only Savior (see Acts 4:12).

The Lord commands us to:

  • Rejoice in our salvation (Is 25:9). With Mary, we exclaim: “My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior” (Lk 1:46-47).
  • “Work with anxious concern to achieve [our] salvation” (Phil 2:12). This means we should live our salvation by being faithful to our baptismal promises.
  • Share our salvation by witnessing for Jesus (Acts 1:8) and making disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19), for Jesus wants all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4).

Remember that without being saved by Jesus, we would be “foolish, disobedient, and far from true faith” (Ti 3:3), for “we were the slaves of our passions and of pleasures of various kinds. We went our way in malice and envy, hateful ourselves and hating one another” (Ti 3:3). Our lives would be hell on earth and hell after earth but for Jesus our Savior. We owe everything to Him. Therefore, let us rejoice in our salvation, live it to the full, and share it with everyone. Praise Jesus, our only Savior!

Prayer: Lord, I will make "myself all things to all men in order to save at least some of them" (1 Cor 9:22).

Promise: "One of them, realizing that he had been cured, came back praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself on his face at the feet of Jesus and spoke His praises." —Lk 17:15-16

Praise: St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was afflicted with frail health, but didn't let that stop her from founding the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
