WHATEVER WE PLEASE?
"Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John [the Baptizer.]" —Matthew 11:7

Jesus explained that St. John the Baptizer was “Elijah, the one who was certain to come” (Mt 11:14). He told the crowds that John was a messenger sent by God to prepare His way (Mt 11:10). After John was killed by King Herod, Jesus explained to three of His disciples that the religious leaders “did entirely as they pleased with” John, putting him to death (Mk 9:13). Jesus said this in the context of His own suffering to come (Mk 9:12), foretelling that people would likewise do whatever they pleased with Him.

God sends many people into our lives: parents, spouses, children, coworkers, pastors, etc. Are we doing entirely as we please with these people, or are we doing entirely as God wishes with them? This is an important question to ponder, for we aren’t even free to do whatever we please with our own life. Jesus is the Owner of our life, not us. Jesus has purchased us at the price of His own blood (1 Cor 6:19-20). He is our Master, and we belong to Him (Rm 14:7-8).

Since Jesus is our Master, we must live in this world entirely as He pleases rather than entirely as we please. As Christmas approaches, resolve to let the Lord do entirely as He pleases with your life (see Ps 104:34).

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever You must in order to do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "The coming of the Lord is at hand." —Jas 5:8

Praise: "Be exalted above the heavens, O God; above all the earth be Your glory!" (Ps 57:6)

ELIJAH IS COMING
"The scribes claim that Elijah must come first." —Matthew 17:10

Before Jesus came the first time, the new Elijah, St. John the Baptizer, came (Mt 17:12). Before Jesus comes the final time, Elijah will come (Mal 3:23). Before Jesus comes into our hearts and world this Christmas season, Elijah will also come.

Elijah comes as a prophet. His words are “as a flaming furnace” (Sir 48:1). He calls us to repentance and purification. He turns “back the hearts of fathers toward their sons” and daughters, and thereby restores family life and re-establishes the people of God (Sir 48:10).

To meet Christ this Christmas, we must let the prophetic word penetrate and judge “the reflections and thoughts” of our hearts (Heb 4:12). Then we will repent and be forgiven as we forgive those who have sinned against us (Mt 6:12) — especially our spouses, children, and parents. Through the prophetic word, the mountains will be leveled, the valleys filled, the crooked ways made straight, and the rough ways made smooth (Lk 3:5). If we obey the prophetic word of new Elijahs, the way will be prepared for Christ’s coming (Lk 3:4), and we will meet Jesus this Christmas in a life-changing, world-changing way.

Prayer: Father, grace me with repentance even if I must be "reduced...to straits" (Sir 48:2).

Promise: "Give us new life, and we will call upon Your name." —Ps 80:19

Praise: St. Lucy's prayers were instrumental in the healing of her mother from hemorrhages.

"MARY" CHRISTMAS
"Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord on that day." —Zechariah 2:15

During Advent, the Lord repeatedly commands us to prepare the way for Him. We know the Lord is telling us to repent in a mountain-leveling, valley-filling, straightening, and smoothing way (Is 40:3-4). How exactly do we do this?

Today we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas. Mary is the expert on preparing the way of the Lord, because she conceived and birthed Jesus. Outside of Mexico City, hundreds of years ago, Mary prepared the way for the Lord so well that eight million people gave their lives to Jesus in seven years. Mary prepared the way of the Lord by:

  • obeying. She said: “I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say” (Lk 1:38; see also Jn 2:5).
  • evangelizing. “Thereupon Mary set out, proceeding in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah, where she entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth” (Lk 1:39-40).
  • prophesying. She announced that the Lord “has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away” (Lk 1:52-53).
  • suffering. “Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother” (Jn 19:25).
  • praying. At the first Christian Pentecost, “together they devoted themselves to constant prayer” (Acts 1:14).

Prepare the way of the Lord. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!

Prayer: Father, may I be prepared for Christ's coming this Christmas. May I prepare others as Mary does.

Promise: "Your deed of hope will never be forgotten by those who tell of the might of God." —Jdt 13:19

Praise: "God Who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is His name" (Lk 1:49).

STRONGER THAN THE STRONG MAN (Lk 11:22) - One Bread, One Body, 12/10/2025

STRONGER THAN THE STRONG MAN (Lk 11:22)
"He gives strength to the fainting; for the weak He makes vigor abound. Though young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall, they that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles' wings." —Isaiah 40:29-31

Samson was so strong that he pushed over two structural columns of a Philistine temple, thereby killing several thousand of His enemies (Jgs 16:27ff). St. Paul was so strong that he survived five scourgings of thirty-nine lashes each time (2 Cor 11:24). Many men have died before the thirty-ninth lash of just one scourging. Paul and Samson had supernatural strength.

We also need this kind of strength. It takes supernatural strength to care for the needs of all the children God wills to give a married couple. Without expecting supernatural strength, a couple may give in to the temptation to plan their own family, rebel against God’s will, and refuse to cooperate with God in creating a human person. In the same way, unless we plan to receive supernatural strength, we will unnecessarily turn down many opportunities to love, evangelize, and serve. However, when we know God promises us humanly impossible strength, we will be open to answering humanly impossible calls.

For a true Christmas, we need supernatural strength. Look at Mary traveling to Bethlehem while about to have a baby. Look at the wise men following the star and undergoing, for many months, the rigors of travel in ancient times. “Look to the Lord in His strength” (Ps 105:4). Ask the Lord for supernatural strength. “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). Have a true Christmas.

Prayer: Jesus, in You I have strength for everything (Phil 4:13).

Promise: "Take My yoke upon your shoulders and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart." —Mt 11:29

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II said, "Loreto is the first church on which shone the light of the maternity of the Mother of God."

HIS PASSION FOR ALL TO BE SAVED
"It is no part of your heavenly Father's plan that a single one of these little ones shall ever come to grief." —Matthew 18:14

The Lord wants all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4). He wants every person ever created to be with Him in heaven forever. If the Lord had His way, there would be no people in hell.

The Lord’s desire for all people to be saved is not merely a wish or abstraction. To save all people, the Lord went to the extreme of emptying Himself (Phil 2:7) to become a man so that He could go to an even further extreme and die on the cross to save us all (Rm 5:8). The Lord continues His passion to save us all by baptizing us into Him (Rm 6:3), by living within us (Jn 17:23), and giving us His Body and Blood.

If a person is not saved, it will not be the Lord’s fault. What more could He do? (see e.g. Is 5:4) He cannot love us more, for He loves us infinitely and perfectly — even to death on the cross.

Accept His extreme, crucified love. Accept Jesus as Savior, Lord, and God.

Prayer: Father, in this Advent, may I "grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love" (Eph 3:18).

Promise: "Comfort, give comfort to My people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem." —Is 40:1-2

Praise: It is said that St. Juan Diego walked fifteen miles, one way, to attend Mass.

THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD
"Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has bestowed on us in Christ every spiritual blessing in the heavens!" —Ephesians 1:3

Some of our Protestant brothers and sisters accuse Catholics of complicating the faith. Catholics insist on the hierarchical Church, the deposit of the faith, the Magisterium, the liturgical year, and several other complex systems. Then we bring up Mary, and, if that’s not enough, we speak of her Immaculate Conception, the virgin-birth of her Son Jesus (Mt 1:23), her Assumption into heaven, and her roles as Mediatrix and Queen of Heaven. We seem to complicate our complications. Actually, we are letting the all-holy, triune God lavish His riches on us.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the quintessential example of spiritual richness. She has always been astoundingly rich in holiness, purity, and power. She truly is the queen of heaven and earth with all the riches accompanying queenship (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 966). Mary is the example of what the Lord has in store for us. He wants to make us immaculate through repentance and then take us up to heaven where we will reign forever with Him. Then we will be rich beyond all measure and imagining.

Today’s celebration of Mary’s Immaculate Conception brings up “immeasurably more than we ask or imagine” (Eph 3:20). Mary was conceived by her parents Sts. Joachim and Ann in the usual way; yet, from the first moment of her conception she was free of all stain of original sin. Let God be God, and enrich us in a most mysterious way.

Prayer: Father, I rejoice that You are a God way beyond my understanding (Is 55:8-9).

Promise: "Mary said: 'I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.' " —Lk 1:38

Praise: "How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God!" (Rm 11:33) Praise You, Lord, for Mary's obedient response to Your plan for salvation.

THE POLITICALLY INCORRECT WORD
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." —Matthew 3:2, RSV-CE

The first word Jesus spoke in His public ministry was “Repent!” (see Mt 4:17, RSV-CE) St. John the Baptizer also spoke the word “Repent” (Mt 3:2, RSV-CE). Do you place the same priority on repentance as did Jesus and St. John the Baptizer? In the last thirty days, how often did you speak or write the word “repent”? Between now and Christmas, which word will you use more: “Shopping” or “Repent”?

Repentance is not a popular subject nowadays. Repentance presumes sin and wrongdoing, and the secular culture denies these. However, crowds responded eagerly to the calls of Jesus and John to repentance (see Lk 3:10; 4:14). The Word of God spread widely and many did repent. Tax collectors, prostitutes, and sinners repented (Mt 21:32). Lives and lifestyles were changed (see Lk 19:8-10). People were healed. Heaven rejoiced (Lk 15:7, 10).

You can begin today to emphasize repentance this Advent. Invite your children or neighbors to a Confession Party. Go to Confession with them and then celebrate with a “fatted calf” by going out to dinner or dessert (Lk 15:23).

If you speak of repentance, some will repent, while others will persecute you (see Lk 4:28ff). Repent of not speaking of repentance. “The kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mk 4:17). Our Savior is coming and His way must be prepared (Lk 3:4). “Be earnest about it, therefore. Repent!” (Rv 3:19)

Prayer: Father, may I go to Confession before I buy another Christmas present.

Promise: "Everything written before our time was written for our instruction, that we might derive hope from the lessons of patience and the words of encouragement in the Scriptures." —Rm 15:4

Praise: "I will praise You among the Gentiles and I will sing to Your name" (Rm 15:9).

CHRISTMAS CROWDS
"At the sight of the crowds, His heart was moved with pity." —Matthew 9:36

When we see the crowds in our society, when we observe the sufferings and injustices of our world, we, like Jesus, may be “moved with pity.” Consequently, we often express our concern (especially around Christmas time) by making a contribution to a “worthy cause.” Thank God for our contributions. They are needed. But what did Jesus do when He saw crowds “lying prostrate from exhaustion, like sheep without a shepherd”? (Mt 9:36)

Jesus’ first response to the needs of the masses was not Communism, humanitarianism, secular humanism, capitalism, programs, or money. Jesus called His disciples to pray, to “beg the Harvest-Master to send out laborers to gather His harvest” (Mt 9:37-38). Then He sent His disciples to answer their own prayer and to work in gathering the harvest (Mt 10:1ff).

If you care, you will pray and work. This means more than just saying a few prayers and doing a few good deeds around Christmas time. Jesus calls us to pray always (see Lk 18:1) and to work as His slaves (Col 3:23-24). Jesus calls us to love Him, His people, and His poor by no longer living for ourselves but for Him (Gal 2:20; 2 Cor 5:15). Jesus calls us to love by laying down our lives for Him, our brothers and sisters, and even our enemies (see 1 Jn 3:16). Will you be only a crowd-pleaser or, with Jesus, a “crowd-lover”?

Prayer: Father, beginning this Christmas, may I help the poor even if I have to become poor.

Promise: "A voice shall sound in your ears: 'This is the way; walk in it,' when you would turn to the right or to the left." —Is 30:21

Praise: St. Nicholas, a bishop in Greece in the fourth century, vigorously defended the divinity of Christ against the Arian heretics.

THE DAMAGE OF DISOBEDIENCE
"Jesus warned them sternly...But they went off." —Matthew 9:30-31

Jesus sternly warned the two blind men He had healed: “ ‘See to it that no one knows of this.’ But they went off and spread word of Him through the whole area” (Mt 9:30-31). The disobedience of the two healed men resulted in some people continuing to have the wrong idea about the Messiah. This contributed to the rejection of Jesus’ claim to be the Messiah and eventually to His crucifixion and death. Disobedience is harmful, even to causing Jesus’ death on the cross.

Beginning this Advent, let us obey the Lord always and in detail. Let us delight to obey the Lord (see Ps 40:9). The Lord has a wondrous Christmas season planned for us, for He intends to come to us in a special way. However, we must follow His directions. The Lord’s plan for the coming year and for our lives is amazingly glorious. Yet only by our obedience will we live His plan for us. The Lord died on the cross and rose from the dead to make possible for us lives which are graced beyond anything we can ask for or imagine (see Eph 3:20). However, we must obey Him. All evils have entered the world through disobedience. But grace floods the world through the obedience of Jesus and our imitation of His obedience. Obey Him.

Prayer: Father, grace me to obey You and thereby to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:32).

Promise: "Out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see. The lowly will ever find joy in the Lord, and the poor rejoice in the Holy One of Israel." —Is 29:18-19

Praise: Carol always attentively listened to the attendant at the gas station and told him that Jesus loved him. One day he confided to her that he had been considering suicide. Later that same day she talked to him about how much God loved him, and he received the courage to choose life.

THE ROCK OR JINGLE BELL ROCK?
"Anyone who hears My words and puts them into practice is like the wise man who built his house on rock." —Matthew 7:24

Will Christmas this year be a “flash-in-the-pan” experience or a solid foundation for the new year? People in modern society are increasingly becoming more unstable. For most people, jobs don’t last as long as they used to. Houses and cars aren’t made to last for very long. Even marriages and families don’t often endure. We are a people constantly on the move. We are not pilgrims as much as refugees. We are repeatedly leaving somewhere to go nowhere.

However, Christ wants to have mercy on us and build our Christmases and lives on the rock foundation of hearing and doing His Word (Mt 7:24). “A strong city have we; He sets up walls and ramparts to protect us” (Is 26:1). “Trust in the Lord forever! For the Lord is an eternal Rock” (Is 26:4).

Let Jesus give you a Christmas you can count on, stand on, and build on. For Jesus to be your “Rock of ages,” let Him first be your Rock this Christmas.

Prayer: Father, stabilize and transform even the most chaotic lives.

Promise: "He humbles those in high places, and the lofty city He brings down." —Is 26:5

Praise: St. John of Damascus gave his gifts to others in the form of poems, hymns, and teachings, thus building up faith.

"I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION"
"They all ate and were satisfied." —Matthew 15:37, RSV-CE

A side effect of the Eucharistic miracle in today’s Gospel was that over four thousand people were satisfied after a meal (Mt 15:37). All too often in Scripture, a meal ends with dissatisfaction (Nm 21:5), breaking of faith (Gn 25:29-34), deception (Gn 27:25ff), and sometimes violence and death (Gn 37:25ff; Dn 5:1ff, 30).

Jesus’ Eucharistic meal with His apostles, the Last Supper, also ended in betrayal, denial, and death. However, in the Eucharist, Jesus has triumphed over human sins and failings. He has transformed human dissatisfaction into satisfaction (Mt 15:37), thanksgiving (Mt 15:36), and the joy of the heavenly banquet to come (Rv 19:9; see also Is 25:6).

The world and the devil attempt to sow dissatisfaction in us. In fact, worldly advertisements aim at identifying our dissatisfaction or creating dissatisfaction in the lives of those who are currently satisfied. Therefore, we must break away from the messages of the world to be able to fully receive the Bread from Heaven and be satisfied according to God’s standards.

Numerous Catholics today do not receive the Eucharist with reverence, love, attentiveness, and holiness, thus putting themselves at risk of dissatisfaction and even bodily harm (1 Cor 11:27-30; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1385). Jesus plans for His heavenly food to nourish rather than harm us, but it’s up to us to receive Him rightly. Fix your eyes on the Eucharistic Jesus (Heb 12:2). In the Eucharist, Jesus sacrificially satisfies our every need (Ps 145:16; 81:16, RSV-CE). Eat the flesh of the Son of Man (Jn 6:56) and be satisfied (Mt 15:37).

Prayer: Jesus, in the Eucharist, You have given me Your very best. May I be satisfied with this gift (Heb 13:5) and praise You always.

Promise: "Let us rejoice and be glad that He has saved us!" —Is 25:9

Praise: St. Francis Xavier obeyed Jesus' command to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth. He evangelized many Asian people.

GOD MAKES ALL THINGS NEW - One Bread, One Body, 12/02/2025

GOD MAKES ALL THINGS NEW
"Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra's den, and the child lay his hand on the adder's lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all My holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord." —Isaiah 11:6-9

Can you picture this image? The Republican is a guest of the Democrat. The baby in the womb and the abortionist are friends; the progressive and the conservative dine together in harmony. Palestinians and Israelis send their border patrols home. There is no need for mandatory child protection training. Divorce is unheard of because all husbands and wives are living in joy and peace.

This scene is what we await as Christians. We believe God will bring about His kingdom of peace, in which people are so transformed in Jesus that mortal enemies become friends and co-workers. Those who prey on others shall have a totally new and different nature in Jesus (Gal 6:15). Lest we become skeptical, the above scenario has happened throughout salvation history (see e.g. Acts 9:18, 26-28; 10:13-15, 25ff; Mt 9:9-10; Jn 4:9, 39-42).

Skepticism melts in the glory that is the fear of the Lord (Is 11:3). Stand amazed at the omnipotent, almighty, loving-kindness of our God. Receive a new nature in Christ Jesus, Who makes all things new (2 Cor 5:17; Rv 21:5).

Prayer: Lord, You have overcome the world (Jn 16:33). May I be overcome with awe in Your presence and never doubt You again.

Promise: "Many prophets and kings wished to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." —Lk 10:24

Praise: Alice has built her life around Jesus and has received Him daily in the Eucharist for forty years.

ENTER IN, LORD
"I will come…" —Matthew 8:7

We’re getting our Christmas trees ready. We’re preparing for guests to enter the Christmas parties we host. We’ll let the guests we invite to our Christmas parties enter into our homes when they knock at our doors, but will we let Jesus in? Advent is about the Lord trying to enter. “Let the Lord enter, He is King of Glory” (see Ps 24:9).

St. Joseph knocked on many doors in Bethlehem, searching for a home that would open its doors to his family as Mary was about to give birth to Jesus. However, no one in Bethlehem let them enter (Lk 2:7). Elsewhere, some did let the Lord enter. The centurion was ready to welcome Jesus, even though he considered himself unworthy (Lk 7:6). Zacchaeus (Lk 19:5-6), St. Martha (Jn 12:2), and St. Matthew (Mt 9:10) welcomed Jesus into their homes.

How about you? Jesus stands knocking at your door (Rv 3:20). At Christmas, we will sing, “Let every heart prepare Him room.” Prepare your home and your heart for the Lord. Let Jesus enter under the roof of your mouth in the Holy Eucharist (see Mt 8:8). Go to Mass more frequently this Advent. He longs for you to let Him enter — into your mouth, body, soul, and home.

Prayer: Jesus, may I welcome You with the joy of Zacchaeus, Matthew, and Martha.

Promise: "For over all, His glory will be shelter and protection." —Is 4:6

Praise: Six-year-old Roger hid behind the altar when his mother asked him to dust the pews of the Church. From that spot, all he could see was the large crucifix on the wall. Viewing that crucifix instilled in his heart a lifelong love of Jesus crucified. Roger eventually became a Catholic priest and ministered for decades. Upon retirement from active ministry, the church was remodeled and the new pastor gave Fr. Roger that same crucifix to keep.

PREPARATION DAY
"It is now the hour for you to wake from sleep." —Romans 13:11

A thief preparing to break into your house wants to take your possessions (see Mt 24:43). Jesus, our Lord and King, also is preparing to enter your house, even standing and knocking at your door (Rv 3:20). First, He desires to have fellowship with you. Then, if you allow, He desires to take possession of your life and your home. He wants to be Lord of everything in your life. We prevent the thief from entering by making our house secure, but are we also guarding our possessions and hearts so strongly that we are preventing Jesus from entering?

Jesus says that even if we are prepared for His coming, we will be surprised at the timing (see Mt 24:36; 25:5). Accordingly, the best way to be prepared for the coming of Christ is to be prepared today. Make Him Lord of your house right now. “The time is short” (1 Cor 7:29). “Prepare the way of the Lord” (Mt 3:3).

Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us (Jn 14:2-3). We likewise are to be preparing a place for Jesus, so that He can dwell in our hearts, homes, work, and lives. Are we “on our guard” about some things, but completely off guard about the more important things, like the Second Coming of Christ?

The measure we measure with shall be measured back to us (Mt 7:2). When Jesus knocks on our door, if we tell Him, “I do not know where You come from. Depart from me” (see Mt 7:23; Lk 13:27), we should not be surprised if Jesus says the same to us when we knock on His door on Judgment Day (Mt 25:11-12). Therefore, prepare for His coming now (Mt 24:44).

Prayer: Father, I will put my secular Christmas preparations on hold until I have prepared for the coming of Your Son, Jesus.

Promise: "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the desires of the flesh." —Rm 13:14

Praise: All hail, King Jesus! Reign over this new year. Alleluia!

ALCOHOLICS UNANIMOUS
"Be on guard lest your spirits become bloated with indulgence and drunkenness and worldly cares." —Luke 21:34

Tomorrow we begin the season of Advent. Therefore, be on guard lest your hearts become loaded down with a headache, drunkenness, and life’s cares (see Lk 21:34). In this warning, Jesus seems to be describing a spiritual drunkenness and a spiritual hangover. Although we may not be physically drunk, we may frequently get intoxicated by indulging our senses. We can become spiritually drunk by staring at our phone or a TV for hours; smoking a few cigarettes; snacking for hours; watching videos; reading magazines; listening to music for an extended time; surfing the Internet for awhile; playing video games for a long time; or getting a caffeine fix by drinking cup after cup of coffee and can after can of caffeinated soft drinks, with an occasional candy bar. We can also get spiritually drunk without over-stimulating our senses. We can consume shot glass after shot glass of bitterness, unforgiveness, self-pity, fear, self-hatred, or anxiety.

Therefore, to be ready for Jesus’ final coming, we should repent of our sins, drastically simplify our lifestyles, forgive those who have sinned against us, be healed, and make every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor 10:5). “Live soberly” (1 Pt 1:13; 5:8).

Prayer: Father, train us "to reject godless ways and worldly desires, and live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age as we await our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of the great God and of our Savior Christ Jesus" (Ti 2:12-13).

Promise: "The kingship and dominion and majesty of all the kingdoms under the heavens shall be given to the holy people of the Most High, Whose kingdom shall be everlasting: all dominions shall serve and obey Him." —Dn 7:27

Praise: Praise You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for showering us with Your love.

LITTLE BIG HORN
"This horn had eyes like a man, and a mouth that spoke arrogantly." —Daniel 7:8

In Daniel’s vision, the horn that sprang from the fourth beast was the Seleucid kingdom (Dn 7:8). The big mouth of the little horn was King Antiochus IV Epiphanes. This man was so arrogant (see Dn 7:11) that, after a reign of mass murder, terror, and torture (see 1 Mc 1:54-63), he remarked about what a nice guy he was (1 Mc 6:12). King Antiochus would feel at home with us today, for arrogance is rampant in our society. There is a raging battle within the secular culture to pressure the Church to compromise its teaching to accommodate artificial contraception, homosexual activity, or abortion.   Also, over half of Catholics disagree with the Church’s teaching on the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Are we mocking God? (see Gal 6:7)

The Lord’s judgment on our arrogance is: “All you can do is make arrogant and pretentious claims. All such boasting is reprehensible” (Jas 4:16). “The haughty eyes of man will be lowered, the arrogance of men will be abased, and the Lord alone will be exalted, on that day. For the Lord of hosts will have His day against all that is proud and arrogant, all that is high, and it will be brought low” (Is 2:11-12). “God ‘is stern with the arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness’ ” (1 Pt 5:5; Prv 3:34). Repent of arrogance and submit to God’s Word and His Church.

Prayer: Father, may I close my mouth and open my ears.

Promise: "The heavens and the earth will pass away, but My words will not pass." —Lk 21:33

Praise: Jesus healed José of cancer.

THE COURAGE TO PRAY ANYWHERE
"Men rushed in and found Daniel praying and pleading before his God." —Daniel 6:12

The Babylonian government passed a law forbidding true prayer. Daniel broke the law repeatedly and publicly (Dn 6:11). Some contemporary governments have passed laws forbidding prayer completely or in certain places and on certain occasions. Also, there are various tyrannical, unwritten laws forbidding public prayer at work, even at home, or in other social situations. We need to be like Daniel and break the law repeatedly and publicly. Let us prayerfully and joyfully go into the lion’s den (Dn 6:17).

We must not compromise on the necessity and right to pray always (Lk 18:1), for prayer is communication with God, Who is the Love of our lives. We should either die praying or be rescued from death by the power of prayer (see Acts 12:5ff). The Lord commands us: “Never cease praying” (1 Thes 5:17). There is “the necessity of praying always and not losing heart” (Lk 18:1).

Therefore, pray always. Pray courageously and publicly. Pray together and individually. Pray in marriages, families, schools, factories, and offices. Pray on streets and on the phone. Pray where people don’t pray. Pray “in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health.” Pray when you understand God and when you don’t. Pray when your prayers don’t seem to be answered. Pray in darkness, dryness, and confusion. Pray always.

Prayer: Father, may I break new ground in prayer.

Promise: "When these things begin to happen, stand erect and hold your heads high, for your deliverance is near at hand." —Lk 21:28

Praise: When someone asks Sylvia to pray for them, she not only commends that person to God in prayer privately, but offers to pray for them "on the spot."

"SOBER UP" (1 Sm 1:14)
"Under the influence of the wine..." —Daniel 5:2

At this time of year, the world is obsessed with “Holiday” shopping events for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Church, however, has a different focus. The liturgical year comes to a close this Saturday, and a new Church Year begins with Advent this Sunday. The Church focuses upon being prepared (Mt 24:44)for the comings of Jesus at Christmas, at the hour of our death, and in His Second Coming.

Tomorrow, in the USA, people will celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving with feasting and the drinking of alcohol. Some of these gatherings will feature a “drunken show” (see 1 Sm 1:14) similar to that which occurred at King Belshazzar’s blasphemous party (see Dn 5:1ff). Belshazzar’s life ended that night (Dn 5:30); he had no further time to repent of his blasphemous acts and undo the damage he caused during his drunken binge.

The Church is likewise throwing a Thanksgiving Day party tomorrow which features holy vessels, wine, celebration, feasting, and the memorial of the death of the host (see Dn 5:1-4). It’s called the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Mass features the Eucharist, a word which means “Thanksgiving.” Throughout the world, some families will begin their Thanksgiving gatherings with Mass and end with prayers of thanksgiving and praise. Tomorrow and all days, be under the influence of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:25) and not under the influence of any worldly substance. Give thanks the Church’s way instead of the world’s way.

Prayer: Father, may they who give thanks to You be many and may they bring greater glory to You (2 Cor 4:15).

Promise: "By patient endurance you will save your lives." —Lk 21:19

Praise: William, a young father with six children, launched an annual Men's Conference which ministers to over a thousand Catholic men with godly teaching, Mass, and Adoration.

Nebuchadnezzar had a vision representing the destruction of the Babylonian, Median, Persian, and Hellenistic empires (Dn 2:31ff). Hundreds of years of world history were reduced to nothing. Jesus expressed a similar revelation concerning the Temple. He prophesied that the five-hundred-year-old Temple would be utterly destroyed, with not one stone left on a stone (Lk 21:6). This prophecy was fulfilled in detail in 70 A.D., less than forty years after Jesus announced this shocking revelation.

There’s no security in military power, the governments of the world, or the most prodigious wealth. There’s no security in social security or even in religious organizations. We must pray with the psalmist: “Only in God be at rest, my soul, for from Him comes my hope. He only is my Rock and my Salvation, my Stronghold; I shall not be disturbed”’ (Ps 62:6-7).

We must totally give our lives to Jesus. Thus we will “build a secure foundation for the future, for receiving that life which is life indeed” (1 Tm 6:19). In His Word, the Lord promises: “The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed or delivered up to another people...and it shall stand forever” (Dn 2:44). We can count on having nothing to count on but the Word of God.

Prayer: "I love You, O Lord, my Strength, O Lord, my Rock, my Fortress!" (Ps 18:2-3)

Promise: "But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth." —Dn 2:35

Praise: St. Catherine of Alexandria's debating skills led the Church to designate her the patron saint of philosophers and lawyers.

ALL FOR ONE
"She from her want has given what she could not afford — every penny she had to live on." —Luke 21:4

Father Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, often wrote on these pages, “If Jesus is not Lord of all, He’s not Lord at all” in your life. While he was alive, we often called him “Father All,” for he preached so often on giving your all to Jesus.

Daniel and his three friends trusted the Lord with all their livelihood, even in a foreign land (Dn 1:8ff). The Gospel widow (Lk 21:2), like the widow in Zarephath (1 Kgs 17:12ff), also gave everything to the Lord’s service (see Dn 1:5). Jesus, Mary, and Joseph gave all. Jesus even gave His body, “to be given for you” and me (Lk 22:19). Being Jesus’ disciple means giving all, and trusting the Lord for all.

Ananias and Sapphira held back from giving all, but wanted to appear as if they were giving all (Acts 5:1-11). They would not trust the Lord with their lives, and so they lost their lives (Lk 9:24; Acts 5:5, 10). It’s frightening to think of giving all (see Mt 19:21ff). However, Jesus is “all in all” (1 Cor 15:28). He is not outdone in generosity. In Christ, we have everything (1 Cor 3:21-23). Ask the Lord for all the graces necessary to give Him “all that [you] have” (Mk 12:44).

Prayer: Father, from the very depths of my soul I joyfully surrender all to You.

Promise: "Blessed are You, O Lord, the God of our fathers, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever." —Dn 3:52

Praise: St. Andrew Dung-Lac, a priest, was martyred in Vietnam, along with 116 others in the eighteenth century. They so desired to share their faith in Jesus that they even trusted Him to the point of allowing their blood to be shed (Heb 12:4).

KING JESUS
"There was an inscription over His head: 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' " —Luke 23:38

On this last Sunday of the Church year, we totally commit our lives to Jesus and acknowledge Him as our King and the King of kings (Rv 19:16). Like the good thief, we may have ignored Jesus’ kingship for years or even for our entire lives, but we can repent today. When with contrite hearts we say, “Jesus, remember me when You enter upon Your reign” (Lk 23:42), Jesus will also reply to us: “I assure you: this day you will be with Me in paradise” (Lk 23:43).

Today we can make or renew a commitment to Jesus, which will have eternal significance. Some people think they don’t need to commit their lives to Jesus. They are “good people” who go to church, pray, and have decent morals. Yet all this is only part of being a subject of King Jesus. He rightly demands not just people who are good, prayerful, and decent but people who are begotten from above (Jn 3:3), new creations (2 Cor 5:17), and children of God (Jn 1:12).

To be born again, be made new, and become children of our heavenly Father, we must be baptized into King Jesus (Rm 6:3) and live that new life by faith. This faith will be expressed in total commitment of our lives to King Jesus.

Prayer: King Jesus, thank You for the ultimate privilege of being Your subject. I give all to You.

Promise: "He rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. Through Him we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins." —Col 1:13-14

Praise: All praise to You, Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords! All hail, King Jesus! Alleluia!
