THE END
"Children, it is the final hour." —1 John 2:18

As this year ends, ask yourself: How is my relationship with God? The phrase “All’s well that ends well” is certainly true when it comes to our relationship with the Lord. It’s the state of our relationship with Him at the end that counts.

God tells us in His Word that the final state of our relationship with Him is what He judges us on. “If the virtuous man turns from the path of virtue to do evil...can he do this and still live? None of his virtuous deeds shall be remembered, because he has broken faith” (Ez 18:24). “If the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all My statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him; he shall live because of the virtue he has practiced” (Ez 18:21-22).

Consider the good thief (Lk 23:40-43). Despite a wasted life, he turned to Jesus in his “final hour” (1 Jn 2:18). Now he’s in heaven with Jesus. Conversely, you can guess how your spouse would evaluate your relationship if you said: “I gave you thirty years, but now I’m tired of you. I’m leaving you for someone else.” We must become faithful, and then remain faithful to the end (see Mk 13:13).

Since we are “certain that it is the final hour” (1 Jn 2:18), let us recommit our lives to Jesus. The Lord can do wondrous miracles and fulfill His promises in the last hour. “The one who perseveres to the end will be saved” (Mt 24:13, RNAB).

Prayer: Father, may I live each day as if it were my last day on earth. Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! (Rv 22:20)

Promise: "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." —Jn 1:14

Praise: Pope St. Sylvester I helped end persecution against the Church.

THE JANUARY BLUES
"Carnal allurements, enticements for the eye, the life of empty show — all these are from the world." —1 John 2:16

“Have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love has no place in him” (1 Jn 2:15). Christmas is nothing less and can be nothing more than receiving the Father’s love through Jesus in the Spirit. Therefore, if we love the world, both the Father’s love and Christmas are displaced, pushed out of our lives. Consequently, if we celebrate the worldly “Christmas,” paradoxically we deprive ourselves of the real Christmas.

Some are naive enough to think they can do both, but the Spirit and the flesh are diametrically opposed (Gal 5:17). We can’t serve two masters, even at Christmas time (Lk 16:13). “Are you not aware that love of the world is enmity to God?” (Jas 4:4)

May your Christmas be real and therefore lasting. May your Christmas continue throughout the entire new year and not leave you cold and empty with January blues. May you give thanks to God and talk about the Christ Child to all who look forward to the deliverance of God’s people (Lk 2:38). May you grow in strength, be filled with wisdom, and may the grace of God be upon you this Christmas and New Year (Lk 2:40).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, may I break with the world so as not to stifle You (1 Thes 5:19). May Christmas not disappear but continue and grow in my heart.

Promise: "She was constantly in the temple, worshiping day and night in fasting and prayer." —Lk 2:37

Praise: Father Tim took extra time during the week to listen to the Lord while preparing for Sunday Mass. During his homily, a man was moved to tears and accepted Jesus into his heart.

OPPOSITES STILL ATTRACT
"This Child...[is] a Sign that will be opposed." —Luke 2:34

Now that Christmas Day has passed, Santa and his elves have disappeared, to be forgotten until next November (or October). Jesus, however, remains. He was opposed in the recent months before His birthday. The “politically correct” of the world opposed Him by refusing to mention His name for months, using only the term “holidays” rather than the term which bears His name, “Christmas.” He was in effect opposed by Santa, who was used by the world to distract millions of people who might otherwise have prepared to welcome Jesus on His birthday.

Jesus was opposed by His Jewish king, Herod, shortly after His birth and was nearly assassinated (Mt 2:13-18). He and His parents were so opposed that they had to leave their own country as refugees simply to stay alive. As an adult, He was opposed with ridicule, mockery, plots, attempted arrests, betrayal, and, ultimately, being crucified. Jesus is still being opposed vehemently to this day (see Heb 13:8).

Nonetheless, Jesus prefers being coldly opposed to being ignored (Rv 3:16ff). Jesus is more than “able” (Heb 7:25) to deal with those who oppose Him. As the old saying goes, “opposites attract.” At the height of opposition, when hanging in agony on the cross, Jesus attracted everyone to Himself (Jn 12:32).

Christians, don’t be discouraged by those who vigorously oppose Jesus. They may be opposing Him now, but Jesus is relentlessly attracting them to Himself, as He did with Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:1ff). Pray and fast for “the downfall and the rise” of Jesus’ opponents (Lk 2:34).

Prayer: Jesus, "revealing Light" (Lk 2:32), "saving" Lord (Lk 2:30), bring all my non-believing family members to faith in You.

Promise: "The darkness is over and the real Light begins to shine." —1 Jn 2:8

Praise: St. Thomas Becket was martyred because he was loyal to the King of kings rather than the political king of England.

WHO CARES? - One Bread, One Body, 12/28/2025

WHO CARES?
"Take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate with him; revile him not in the fullness of your strength. For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, it will serve as a sin offering — it will take lasting root." —Sirach 3:12-14

More children than ever before are being cared for by people other than their parents. More elderly people are being cared for by people other than their children than at any other time in history. These trends are not all bad. Some of this care for children and the elderly is Christ-centered. It is an expression of compassion for those in difficult circumstances. Nevertheless, the Lord’s plan in general is for parents to be the primary care-givers for their children and children for their parents.

This care is humanly impossible to give. This can motivate us to cry out to God and receive His gift of unconditional love. This will then make our families “holy families.” For our families to begin to become holy, it is necessary “to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers” (Mal 3:24). Then they will care and pray for one another and by God’s grace be holy.

As Herod tried to destroy the Holy Family (see Mt 2:13), so new Herods are trying to destroy your family and its holiness. Protect your family by sacrificially and unconditionally loving your parents and children. Be holy.

Prayer: Father, may our families be holy as You are holy (see 1 Pt 1:16).

Promise: "You who are wives, be submissive to your husbands. This is your duty in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives. Avoid any bitterness toward them." —Col 3:18-19

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who taught us how to live and love in a human family (see Lk 2:51).

"CAUGHT UP" IN JESUS (Rv 4:2)
"What we have seen and heard we proclaim in turn to you so that you may share life with us." —1 John 1:3

St. John’s heart was abundantly filled with Jesus (see Jn 10:10). Accordingly, when John spoke, his words were about Jesus (see Lk 6:45). The Jewish Sanhedrin commanded John not “to speak the name of Jesus or teach about Him” (Acts 4:18). John responded that he surely couldn’t help speaking about the Jesus that he had personally heard and seen (Acts 4:20).

This makes John an ideal Christmas saint. Unlike the many who missed the presence of the infant Jesus at the first Christmas, John was immersed in Jesus and was therefore quick to recognize the signs of His presence (see Jn 20:8; 21:7). John saw Jesus, heard Jesus, and touched Jesus (1 Jn 1:1). John had to be with Jesus, whether it was on the Mount of Transfiguration (Mk 9:2) or at the foot of the cross (Jn 19:26). No wonder John couldn’t help speaking of Jesus.

For Christians, the Christmas season is just starting. We have another fifteen days of Christmas until ordinary time begins. Let’s rejoice with the true Christmas Spirit, the Holy Spirit. Like St. John, let’s be abundantly filled with Jesus, the Word made Flesh (Jn 1:14), Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23). Then let’s proclaim Jesus to the world so that they may share life with us (1 Jn 1:3) and make our joy complete (1 Jn 1:4).

Prayer: Jesus, transform my senses to be totally attuned to You.

Promise: "Light dawns for the just; and gladness, for the upright of heart." —Ps 97:11

Praise: St. John received an abundance of Jesus' Spirit as he remained true to Him beneath His cross (Jn 19:25-26).

LOVE TO SPEAK
"They proved no match for the wisdom and spirit with which he spoke." —Acts 6:10

St. Stephen could not help speaking of what he had heard and seen (see Acts 4:20) — “the Son of Man standing at God’s right hand” (Acts 7:56). Stephen believed and so he spoke out (see 2 Cor 4:13). Stephen was so full of the Holy Spirit and so full of love that his heart overflowed through his words. He spoke out of the fullness of his heart (Lk 6:45).

Can you let Jesus fill you with His love this Christmas? Can you let the Holy Spirit fill you as He filled St. Stephen, who was a man filled with the Spirit? (Acts 6:8) God so loved the world that He sent His only Son (Jn 3:16), the Infant Jesus, so our hearts could be “full of love” (Eph 1:4). Filled with love, there is “no room for fear” (1 Jn 4:18).

If the martyrdom of Stephen makes you afraid, the Answer to your fears is lying in the manger. Fall on your knees at the feet of the Infant Jesus and let Him fill you with love. Then you will not be able to keep from speaking of what you have heard and seen (Acts 4:20). Like St. Stephen, you will speak out of the fullness of your heart (Lk 6:45).

Prayer: Father, teach me "what to say and how to speak" (Jn 12:49).

Promise: "Whoever holds out to the end will escape death." —Mt 10:22

Praise: "Certain members of the so-called 'Synagogue of Roman Freedmen'...would undertake to engage Stephen in debate, but they proved no match for the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke" (Acts 6:9-10).

CHRISTMAS PRESENCE
"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." —John 1:14

God, the Eternal Word, Who spoke and the earth was made (Ps 33:6, 9), came as an Infant to earth (Lk 2:7). In a sense, God lost His voice. The Infant Jesus, the Word, did not give sermons. And if He did, who would have been able to hear Him? For several decades, He was hidden: first, in a humble manger, then in Egypt, then in lowly Nazareth.

Today’s Scriptures reveal that God the Father has now spoken to us through His Son (Heb 1:2). He is present inside our churches in a tabernacle as the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35). In fact, the Greek word often translated as “dwelt among us” literally means “the Word tabernacled among us” (see Jn 1:14).

When this reflection was written, there were ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza, abortion ran rampant, sexual confusion and perversion went unchecked, and Satan seemingly was having his way in a hurting, divided world. One might wonder where God is in all this chaos. The answer is that Jesus is present here, hidden yet able to be found. Jesus is Emmanuel, God-with-us (see Mt 1:23). Seek Him. He will let you find Him (Jer 29:12-13).

Prayer: Father, You have chosen to speak to us through Your Son (Heb 1:2). May I always desire to listen to Him far more than I want to receive Christmas presents.

Promise: "All the ends of the earth will behold the salvation of our God." —Is 52:10

Praise: "Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; break into song, sing praise" (Ps 98:4).

GOD'S LAST-MINUTE PREPARATIONS
"Now then, speak thus to My servant David, 'The Lord of hosts has this to say.' " —2 Samuel 7:8

On this last day of Advent, the Church brings to our attention something most of us have probably never thought of: the prophecy of Nathan to King David that his house would endure forever (2 Sm 7:16). Zechariah prophesied accordingly of “a Horn of saving strength for us in the house of David” (Lk 1:69). Because of Nathan’s prophecy, it is of utmost significance that Jesus is the Son of David.

The Jewish people and the Church have treasured this prophecy and many other prophecies for thousands of years. With their light, these prophecies continue to penetrate the darkness of age after age. In these last few hours of Advent, let us guard against being so busy preparing for the holidays that we are not well prepared for Christ at Mass, that is, Christmas. Let us make it a priority to read and pray some of the prophecies of Advent. Let us read and pray the four readings from the prophet Isaiah for the four Masses of Christmas (Is 62:1-5; 62:11-12; 52:7-10; 9:1-6). At first, these prophecies may not seem to apply to us, but “keep your attention closely fixed on [them], as you would on a lamp shining in a dark place until the first streaks of dawn appear and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Pt 1:19).

The true light of Christmas is the light of prophecy. On this last day of Advent, live your baptismal sharing in Christ, the Prophet.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to help me unlearn some of the preparations for the holidays which conflict with preparing for Christmas.

Promise: "Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, uttered this prophecy..." —Lk 1:67

Praise: "Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel because He has visited and ransomed His people" (Lk 1:68). Alleluia!

FATHERS, HAVE A HEART
"Turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with doom." —Malachi 3:24

In our present culture of death, it is almost miraculous for the hearts of fathers to be turned to their children. It’s no wonder there is much gloom and “doom” (Mal 3:24) and hopelessness in a culture in which so many fathers turn away from their children.

In our society, there is rampant fornication, adultery, and “shacking up” outside of wedlock. Many men have fathered children through these sins without realizing it. Moreover, it’s likely they prefer not to know if they did father a child. Their hearts are not turned toward their children. Many men, if they become aware of a pregnancy, encourage or even pressure the mother to abort the child. Such a father’s heart is certainly not turned toward his child. If the child survives the womb, many fathers turn their back on their living children through neglect, non-support, or other abuse.

Even within the context of marriage, fathers regularly turn their backs on their children in many ways. Whenever fathers turn their hearts away from their children, “doom” is not far away (Mal 3:24). What if St. Joseph’s fatherly heart was not turned toward the Child Jesus? Where would we be today — and eternally?

Fathers, ask the Lord to give you a new and greater heart for your children (see Sir 48:10; Ez 36:26). The best Christmas present you can give your children is your heart of love for them (see Lk 1:17).

Prayer: Father, may fathers love their children and include them in all they do (see Jn 5:20).

Promise: "All who heard stored these things up in their hearts, saying, 'What will this child be?' " —Lk 1:66

Praise: "O Emmanuel, King and Lawgiver, Desire of the nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord our God."

"I prayed for this child." —1 Samuel 1:27

The voices in the secular world proclaim: “There are only three shopping days left until Christmas.” The voices in the kingdom of God proclaim: “There are only three repenting days left until Jesus’ birthday.”

For three days before Easter, the Church observes the Triduum. We keep vigil for three days, awaiting the Resurrection of the Lord. In a similar way, spend these three days before Christmas repenting, rejoicing, praising, and thanking God for loving us so much as to send His only begotten Son to us — the very best Christmas gift (Jn 3:16). Today, we have the opportunity to keep vigil at the manger, repenting (Lk 3:3), preparing the way of the Lord (Mt 3:3), and awaiting the birth of our Savior.

We have been preparing for the Christmas coming of Christ now for three weeks of Advent. Let’s have a strong finish to the Advent season by keeping vigil for these final three days. Instead of frantic rushes to shop for Christmas gifts, let us choose the better part (see Lk 10:42): to sit at the manger and prepare a welcome for Baby Jesus. We don’t want Him to have to ask, “Why was no one there when I came?” (Is 50:2) “Let every heart prepare Him room.”

Prayer: "My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn. More than sentinels wait for the dawn," I will wait for You, Lord (Ps 130:6-7).

Promise: "He has upheld Israel His servant, ever mindful of His mercy; even as He promised our fathers, promised Abraham and his descendants forever."

Praise: "O King of all the nations, the only Joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature You fashioned from the dust."

KNOCK, KNOCK
"Let the Lord enter; He is King of glory." —Psalm response for today's Mass (see Ps 24:9)

God attempted to enter into the lives of four people in today’s Mass readings. The first, King Ahaz of Judah, did not let the Lord enter into his life (Is 7:12). The other three, St. Paul, St. Joseph, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, let the Lord enter their lives and take charge of all their plans (see Rm 1:1; Mt 1:20-24).

Today’s psalm response urges us to “let the Lord enter” (see Ps 24:9). The Lord stands at the door of your life, knocking (Rv 3:20). He has a plan for your life (Heb 11:40; Jer 29:11), and He wants to enter in. His plan will change your life and turn it around.

The innkeepers of Bethlehem did not let the Lord enter (Lk 2:7). Many people in the secular culture refuse to let the Lord enter. None of us is “worthy to have [the Lord] enter” into our lives (Lk 7:6). Yet the Lord stands knocking at your door (Rv 3:20). Will you open the door and “let the Lord enter” into your life?

Prayer: "Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed" (see Mt 8:8).

Promise: "The Lord Himself will give you this sign: the Virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Immanuel." —Is 7:14

Praise: "O Radiant Dawn, Splendor of eternal light, Sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death."

I DARE YOU TO PRAY
"But Ahaz answered, 'I will not ask!' " —Isaiah 7:12

When we pray, we communicate with God, Who is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16), our Savior and Lord, our Creator and Judge, “a consuming Fire” (Heb 12:29). It is an awesome privilege and a fearful thing to be given permission by God to pray (see Heb 10:31). Thus, the Church has traditionally invited us at Mass to pray the “Our Father” by saying: “We dare to say ‘Our Father.’ ” To put it mildly, it is a daring thing to pray.

Because Ahaz, the king of Judah, was too selfish, proud, and fearful, he was not daring enough to pray for a great sign, as God commanded Him to do (Is 7:10-12). In contrast, Mary dared to pray: “Let it be done to me according to Your word” (see Lk 1:38), although her life was dramatically changed and even endangered by praying such a prayer.

We will either be like Ahaz or Mary. We will be too afraid to begin or follow through with our prayer; or we will have the faith to pray that all be done to us according to God’s Word.

A true Christmas is here “for the asking,” that is, for the praying. I dare you to pray for Christmas by God’s standards. You may find yourself in a stable or on a cross. I dare you to pray and let Christmas be done to you by Christ Himself.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to help me pray in my weakness and cowardice (see Rm 8:26).

Promise: "Nothing is impossible with God." —Lk 1:37

Praise: "O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at Your will the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead Your captive people into freedom."

RELY NOT ON YOUR UNDERSTANDING (Prv 3:5)
"How am I to know this?" —Luke 1:18

Zechariah was an “old man” (Lk 1:18). His “prayer [had] been heard” and answered (Lk 1:13). Now he was required to believe that God was “doing something new” (Is 43:19). Now Zechariah needed to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7), for he most likely would not have lived to see his son, St. John the Baptizer, minister to Israel.

Advent, and life, is not about us. It’s about preparing the way for Jesus (Mt 3:3). Whether we see the culmination of our life of faith, suffering, or ministry is not important. What is important is to believe, obey, love God and others, and do what we are called to do, so that others now and in a future beyond the span of our lives can be blessed.

The couple in today’s first reading is a model for our response to the Lord. They believed the word of the angel and made the request, “Teach us what to do” (Jgs 13:8). Instead of asking “How am I to know this?”, let’s ask, “How can I help prepare Your way, Lord?”

God is in control. We are His humble servants, occupied with leading “the life the Lord has assigned” us (1 Cor 7:17). We are called to trust in His providential love. Like Mary, believe and walk by faith (see Lk 1:38).

Prayer: Father, help me to rely not on my own understanding, but to trust in You with all my heart (Prv 3:5).

Promise: "Joy and gladness will be yours." —Lk 1:14

Praise: "O Flower of Jesse's stem, You have been raised up as a Sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in Your presence; the nations bow down in worship before You. Come, let nothing keep You from coming to our aid."

SETTLING FOR LESS?
"Joseph, son of David, have no fear about taking Mary as your wife. It is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this Child. She is to have a Son and you are to name Him Jesus because He will save His people from their sins." —Matthew 1:20-21

The Lord gave St. Joseph a great gift in calling him to be the husband of Mary. Nevertheless, when Mary conceived God by the power of the Spirit, Joseph received a much greater gift — to be the husband of the mother of God and the foster-father of Jesus, Who is God. When Joseph heard about this greatest, most mysterious gift, he was, of course, lost. The gift was so far “over his head” that he planned to divorce Mary (see Mt 1:19). Yet by faith Joseph accepted the greater gift and let God love him in such an astounding way.

When the Lord gives us our greatest gifts, we cannot understand it. At first, and even for a long time, we think our greatest gifts are tragedies. Only by faith will we accept these gifts and let God be God (see Jas 1:17).

This Christmas, the Lord wants to be His all-powerful, all-holy, perfect, infinite Self. He wants to do more than we can ever ask or imagine (Eph 3:20). By faith, we can be like Joseph and let God love us with His amazing grace. Then we will not only receive the lesser gifts we are comfortable with but the greater gifts we are confused about and afraid of. “O come all ye faithful!”

Prayer: Father, may I never settle for less than Your best.

Promise: "He shall rescue the poor man when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor He shall save." —Ps 72:12-13

Praise: "O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, Who showed Yourself to Moses in the burning bush, Who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come, stretch out Your mighty hand to set us free."

PEOPLE-PERSON
"A family record of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers." —Matthew 1:1-2

God, being the Creator and the Trinity-family, loves genealogies. Because He loves to list the members of His chosen people, there are many genealogies in the Old Testament. The Lord even begins the New Testament by tracing the genealogy of St. Joseph and Jesus.

God loves genealogies because He loves:

  • PEOPLE — Human persons are the crown of creation because we are created “in the divine image” and likeness of God (Gn 1:27).
  • The PAST — The Holy Spirit has not started working just recently. The past is charged with God’s grace and is the basis for God’s work in the present and future.
  • PREGNANCY — In the Bible, the Lord lists person after person who “begat” someone else. The Lord commanded us to “be fertile and multiply” (Gn 1:28). The Lord came to give us life “to the full” (Jn 10:10). He is “the Way, and the Truth, and the Life” (Jn 14:6).
  • PARENTS — The Lord loves parents so much that He even became incarnate and has His own parents. God loves parents.

This partially explains God’s love for genealogies and for you. God loves you amazingly, unconditionally, perfectly, and infinitely. This is the meaning of Christmas and of life.

Prayer: Father, thank You for loving people, and me, so much that You gave Your Son to die for us (see Jn 3:16).

Promise: "The scepter shall never depart from Judah." —Gn 49:10

Praise: "O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, You govern all creation with Your strong yet tender care. Come and show Your people the way to salvation."

NOW IS THE TIME (see 2 Cor 6:2)
"When John came preaching a way of holiness, you put no faith in him." —Matthew 21:32

Are you ready to meet Christ this Christmas? The answer to this question should probably be: “Of course not, how can I be ready for Christmas when Advent isn’t over?” We need Advent. In fact, we need every day and every moment of Advent to have a true Christmas. A full Advent is not merely an option; it is a necessity.

When we realize this, we may feel hopeless if we have “goofed off” this Advent. If so, let us cry out to the Lord for mercy. He may multiply the remaining Advent days, or He may give us a delayed Christmas after our late Advent. There is hope for us to have Christmas if we will repent of wasting some of our Advent days and if we will obey God starting now. Jesus remarked that notorious sinners, such as tax collectors and prostitutes, enter God’s kingdom because they repent (Mt 21:32). There is hope in His mercy and our repentance.

Better an Advent now than never. Better a late Christmas than none. Live Advent fully — now.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to guide me to the truth of Advent (see Jn 16:13).

Promise: "I will change and purify the lips of the peoples, that they all may call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord." —Zep 3:9

Praise: Sarah turned her Advent around by deciding to attend daily Mass during the last half of Advent.

A FREE CHRISTMAS PRESENT
"When [Balaam] raised his eyes and saw Israel encamped, tribe by tribe, the spirit of God came upon him, and he gave voice to his oracle." —Numbers 24:2-3

Balaam was a man of great spiritual powers. That’s why Balak sent two deputations of princes to persuade Balaam to curse the Israelites (Nm 22:5-16). Balaam described himself as “the man whose eye is true...who hears what God says, and knows what the Most High knows, of one who sees what the Almighty sees” (Nm 24:3-4, 15-16).

Although Balaam was exceptionally gifted by God and gave one of the greatest prophecies of all time (see Nm 24:17), he is considered a villain in the New Testament (see Jude 11; Rv 2:14). His great spiritual gifts were sabotaged, for “he was a man attracted to dishonest gain” (2 Pt 2:15).

“The love of money is the root of all evil. Some men in their passion for it have strayed from the faith, and have come to grief amid great pain” (1 Tm 6:10). Christmas is often the time when our love of money and what money can buy surfaces (see 1 Jn 2:15). Christmas is an opportunity to see we are trapped (1 Tm 6:9). Christmas is the time for us to repent, make Jesus our Wealth (Phil 3:8), and get freed from the trap. Go free this Christmas.

Prayer: Father, may I love You with all my heart and love money with none of my heart (see Mt 6:24).

Promise: "Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me Your paths, guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior." —Ps 25:4-5

Praise: Counting the friendship as worth more than money, Thomas forgave the loan his friend had promised to pay.

WHATEVER WE PLEASE?
"Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John [the Baptizer.]" —Matthew 11:7

Jesus explained that St. John the Baptizer was “Elijah, the one who was certain to come” (Mt 11:14). He told the crowds that John was a messenger sent by God to prepare His way (Mt 11:10). After John was killed by King Herod, Jesus explained to three of His disciples that the religious leaders “did entirely as they pleased with” John, putting him to death (Mk 9:13). Jesus said this in the context of His own suffering to come (Mk 9:12), foretelling that people would likewise do whatever they pleased with Him.

God sends many people into our lives: parents, spouses, children, coworkers, pastors, etc. Are we doing entirely as we please with these people, or are we doing entirely as God wishes with them? This is an important question to ponder, for we aren’t even free to do whatever we please with our own life. Jesus is the Owner of our life, not us. Jesus has purchased us at the price of His own blood (1 Cor 6:19-20). He is our Master, and we belong to Him (Rm 14:7-8).

Since Jesus is our Master, we must live in this world entirely as He pleases rather than entirely as we please. As Christmas approaches, resolve to let the Lord do entirely as He pleases with your life (see Ps 104:34).

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever You must in order to do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "The coming of the Lord is at hand." —Jas 5:8

ELIJAH IS COMING
"The scribes claim that Elijah must come first." —Matthew 17:10

Before Jesus came the first time, the new Elijah, St. John the Baptizer, came (Mt 17:12). Before Jesus comes the final time, Elijah will come (Mal 3:23). Before Jesus comes into our hearts and world this Christmas season, Elijah will also come.

Elijah comes as a prophet. His words are “as a flaming furnace” (Sir 48:1). He calls us to repentance and purification. He turns “back the hearts of fathers toward their sons” and daughters, and thereby restores family life and re-establishes the people of God (Sir 48:10).

To meet Christ this Christmas, we must let the prophetic word penetrate and judge “the reflections and thoughts” of our hearts (Heb 4:12). Then we will repent and be forgiven as we forgive those who have sinned against us (Mt 6:12) — especially our spouses, children, and parents. Through the prophetic word, the mountains will be leveled, the valleys filled, the crooked ways made straight, and the rough ways made smooth (Lk 3:5). If we obey the prophetic word of new Elijahs, the way will be prepared for Christ’s coming (Lk 3:4), and we will meet Jesus this Christmas in a life-changing, world-changing way.

Prayer: Father, grace me with repentance even if I must be "reduced...to straits" (Sir 48:2).

Promise: "Give us new life, and we will call upon Your name." —Ps 80:19

Praise: St. Lucy's prayers were instrumental in the healing of her mother from hemorrhages.

"MARY" CHRISTMAS
"Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord on that day." —Zechariah 2:15

During Advent, the Lord repeatedly commands us to prepare the way for Him. We know the Lord is telling us to repent in a mountain-leveling, valley-filling, straightening, and smoothing way (Is 40:3-4). How exactly do we do this?

Today we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas. Mary is the expert on preparing the way of the Lord, because she conceived and birthed Jesus. Outside of Mexico City, hundreds of years ago, Mary prepared the way for the Lord so well that eight million people gave their lives to Jesus in seven years. Mary prepared the way of the Lord by:

  • obeying. She said: “I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say” (Lk 1:38; see also Jn 2:5).
  • evangelizing. “Thereupon Mary set out, proceeding in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah, where she entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth” (Lk 1:39-40).
  • prophesying. She announced that the Lord “has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away” (Lk 1:52-53).
  • suffering. “Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother” (Jn 19:25).
  • praying. At the first Christian Pentecost, “together they devoted themselves to constant prayer” (Acts 1:14).

Prepare the way of the Lord. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!

Prayer: Father, may I be prepared for Christ's coming this Christmas. May I prepare others as Mary does.

Promise: "Your deed of hope will never be forgotten by those who tell of the might of God." —Jdt 13:19

Praise: "God Who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is His name" (Lk 1:49).

STRONGER THAN THE STRONG MAN (Lk 11:22)
"He gives strength to the fainting; for the weak He makes vigor abound. Though young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall, they that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles' wings." —Isaiah 40:29-31

Samson was so strong that he pushed over two structural columns of a Philistine temple, thereby killing several thousand of His enemies (Jgs 16:27ff). St. Paul was so strong that he survived five scourgings of thirty-nine lashes each time (2 Cor 11:24). Many men have died before the thirty-ninth lash of just one scourging. Paul and Samson had supernatural strength.

We also need this kind of strength. It takes supernatural strength to care for the needs of all the children God wills to give a married couple. Without expecting supernatural strength, a couple may give in to the temptation to plan their own family, rebel against God’s will, and refuse to cooperate with God in creating a human person. In the same way, unless we plan to receive supernatural strength, we will unnecessarily turn down many opportunities to love, evangelize, and serve. However, when we know God promises us humanly impossible strength, we will be open to answering humanly impossible calls.

For a true Christmas, we need supernatural strength. Look at Mary traveling to Bethlehem while about to have a baby. Look at the wise men following the star and undergoing, for many months, the rigors of travel in ancient times. “Look to the Lord in His strength” (Ps 105:4). Ask the Lord for supernatural strength. “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). Have a true Christmas.

Prayer: Jesus, in You I have strength for everything (Phil 4:13).

Promise: "Take My yoke upon your shoulders and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart." —Mt 11:29

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II said, "Loreto is the first church on which shone the light of the maternity of the Mother of God."
