LOVE-PENTECOST

"A third time Jesus asked him, 'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?' " -John 21:17

As we draw near to the conclusion of the Pentecost Novena and to the celebration of Pentecost in this year of the Great Jubilee, Jesus simply and repeatedly asks us: "Do you love Me?" We have come to Jesus; we pray; we go to Mass. Of course, we love Jesus. Why would He ask us again and again whether we love Him?
We can deceive ourselves about love. We can say the right words and do the right things, but still not be living in love. Jesus warned us: "None of those who cry out, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of God but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. When that day comes, many will plead with Me, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name? Have we not exorcised demons by its power? Did we not do many miracles in Your name as well?' Then I will declare to them solemnly, 'I never knew you. Out of My sight, you evildoers!' " (Mt 7:21-23)
We can lose our love. Jesus said to the church of Ephesus: "I hold this against you, though: you have turned aside from your early love" (Rv 2:4). Probably there are people in hell who once loved Jesus but lost their love.
How can we truly love? How can we never stop loving? How can we love ever more deeply? "The love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us" (Rm 5:5). Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost and love!

Prayer: Father, give me such love this Pentecost that I will bring repeated Pentecosts to those around me.

Promise: "Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all my being, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits." -Ps 103:1-2

Praise: St. Norbert led a life of ease and opulence even as a subdeacon of the Church but experienced a life-changing conversion after escaping death. He sold his estates, gave away the proceeds, and pursued a life of poverty.

THE BEST LAID PLANS OF MEN

"Paul, it should be noted, was aware that some of them were Sadducees and some Pharisees." -Acts 23:6

St. Paul's trial before the Sanhedrin was not going well. The high priest had already "ordered his attendants to strike Paul on the mouth" (Acts 23:2). Paul's audience was obviously not receptive. Then Paul had a great idea on how to get out of the mess he was in. He turned the Sadducees of the Sanhedrin against the Pharisees of the Sanhedrin. His trick seemed to work at first, as the Pharisees and the Sadducees started fighting each other (Acts 23:9). However, Paul's trick soon backfired, and he was almost torn to pieces in the ensuing riot (Acts 23:10). Paul subsequently was left in prison for two years (Acts 24:27), almost drowned in a shipwreck (Acts 27:14ff), and kept under house arrest in Rome for two more years (Acts 28:30).
The "morals of the story" are:
* Human ingenuity can backfire on you.
* You can lose four years by taking short cuts to save time.
* The Lord is merciful and is willing to work all things together for the good of those who love Him (Rm 8:28).

"Flesh begets flesh, spirit begets spirit" (Jn 3:6). Don't do your thing. Follow the lead of the Spirit (Gal 5:25). Our best laid plans fail. The Lord's plans always succeed.

Prayer: Father, I will crucify my flesh (Gal 5:24) and live by the Spirit.

Promise: "I do not pray for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their word, that all may be one as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; I pray that they may be [one] in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me." -Jn 17:20-21

Praise: St. Boniface wrote: "What we ourselves cannot bear let us bear with the help of Christ."

THE GIFT OF TEARS

"They began to weep without restraint." -Acts 20:37

If you receive the Holy Spirit in this Pentecost novena, you will probably feel both more joyful and more sorrowful than ever before. St. Paul, in his life in the Spirit, proclaimed and commanded: "Rejoice in the Lord always! I say it again. Rejoice!" (Phil 4:4) Also, Paul, in his life in the Spirit, was often in tears. He stated: "Do not forget that for three years, night and day, I never ceased warning you individually even to the point of tears" (Acts 20:31). "After this discourse, Paul knelt down with them all and prayed. They began to weep without restraint, throwing their arms around him and kissing him" (Acts 20:36-37). These tears of Paul and of the Ephesian Christians were not tears of joy but of sorrow. Life in the Spirit is sorrowful, often tearful.
Under these conditions, will we decide to renew our Baptisms and Confirmations, let the Spirit be stirred into flame in our lives, and receive new Pentecosts? Because no one wants to repeatedly shed tears of sorrow, we are tempted to say "Go, Holy Spirit" rather than "Come, Holy Spirit." The Holy Spirit respects our freedom. He will not force His love on us. We know that the Spirit moves where He wills (see Jn 3:8), but in many ways the Spirit only moves if we will.
Because of the Lord's love for you, decide to accept the joy and sorrow of life in the Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit of tears!

Prayer: Father, "Oh, that my head were a spring of water, my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night" for love of You and Your people (Jer 8:23).

Promise: "Consecrate them by means of truth - 'Your word is truth.' " -Jn 17:17

Praise: Roger was anti-Christian. His wife attended daily Mass. To the joy of his wife, Roger gave his life to Jesus on Good Friday and now runs a Christian radio station.

GETTING INTO TROUBLE

"The Holy Spirit has been warning me from city to city that chains and hardships await me." -Acts 20:23

The Holy Spirit repeatedly warned St. Paul that chains, hardship, and even martyrdom awaited him. Although this would result in Paul suffering persecution and death (Acts 20:24), the Spirit compelled him to finish his race and complete his service to the Lord. The Holy Spirit warns us of trouble and then gets us into it.
If we're going to receive the Spirit in a new Pentecost, we must volunteer to get into the Holy Spirit's kind of trouble. For instance, some nurses who receive the Spirit this Pentecost will quit their jobs rather than be silent about their hospitals performing abortions. Some teachers who have a true Pentecost will be fired because they prayed publicly in a public school. Others will be prepared this Pentecost to have their homes vandalized and lives threatened by porn-pushers that they've tried to put out of business. Some Christians who receive the Spirit this Pentecost will be persecuted or even killed because they have tried to lead others to Christ in Muslim, Communist, or secular humanistic countries.
The Holy Spirit will get us into a certain kind of trouble. If we're willing to get into that trouble, we will receive the Holy Spirit this Pentecost.

Prayer: Father, may my love for You make me willing to suffer and die for You.

Promise: "Eternal life is this: to know You, the only true God, and Him Whom You have sent, Jesus Christ." -Jn 17:3

Praise: The king of Uganda, enraged at the refusal of some of his page boys to submit to his immoral demands, ordered his Christian servants to separate from the non-Christian ones. St. Charles Lwanga and fourteen other young men stepped forward, declared their loyalty to Jesus, and courageously endured martyrdom.

UNQUESTIONABLE FAITH

"Do you really believe?" -John 16:31

Twelve men of Ephesus claimed to be believers (see Acts 19:2). Paul questioned this because they didn't seem to have received the Holy Spirit. As it turned out, they weren't believers in Jesus but in John the Baptizer. Thereupon, Paul explained to them about Jesus, baptized them, and laid hands on them (Acts 19:5-6). "The Holy Spirit came down on them and they began to speak in tongues and to utter prophecies" (Acts 19:6). Then there was no question that they were believers in Jesus.
Jesus' disciples said they believed that Jesus came from God (Jn 16:30). Jesus questioned this because He knew they would soon be scattered, leaving Him quite alone (Jn 16:31-32). We too are scattered and shattered into thousands of denominations and divisions. Instead of praying, receiving Communion, reading the Bible, or being with our brothers and sisters in Christ, we leave Jesus alone. This makes our faith questionable.
Through this Pentecost novena, let us receive the Holy Spirit of unity (see Eph 4:3) and of power. Then Jesus will not have to question our faith. Then He can say to us: "You have great faith!" (Mt 15:28)

Prayer: Holy Spirit, produce in me the fruit of faith (Gal 5:22). May my faith - not my lack of faith - evoke questions from those who know me.

Promise: "I tell you all this that in Me you may find peace. You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world." -Jn 16:33

Praise: St. Marcellinus is said to have converted not only his jailer and the jailer's family, but also his executioner.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE INCARNATION AND THE CHURCH
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=6/1/2014

"No sooner had He said this than He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took
Him from their sight." -Acts 1:9

Jesus' Ascension seemed to have ended our time to benefit from His Incarnation. We could no
longer see God face to face, hear Him, and touch Him. However, Jesus had promised that He
would not leave us orphaned (Jn 14:18). He would be with us always (Mt 28:20), and it is
better for us that He go (Jn 16:7).

Jesus knew that His apostles would not understand His Ascension, so He told them to remain
in Jerusalem. Within a few days, they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5).
They obeyed the Lord after His Ascension and "returned to Jerusalem filled with joy. There
they were to be found in the temple constantly, speaking the praises of God" (Lk 24:52-53).
"Together they devoted themselves to constant prayer" (Acts 1:14).

After nine days of prayer, 120 of Jesus' disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit
(Acts 1:15; 2:4). They baptized 3,000 people that day (Acts 2:41), and the Church was born.
This newborn Church eventually came to be recognized as the body of Christ, the
continuation and development of Jesus' Incarnation (e.g. 1 Cor 12:12; Eph 1:23).

Pray for nine days (a novena) for the Holy Spirit to come and guide you to all truth
(Jn 16:13), especially the truth about His Incarnation and the Church.

Prayer: Father, I accept Your grace to pray for nine days. Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "He has put all things under Christ's feet and has made Him, thus exalted, Head of
the Church, which is His body: the fullness of Him Who fills the universe in all its parts."
-Eph 1:22-23

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is risen, ascended, and glorified! Praise God the Father, God the
Son, and God the Holy Spirit!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

COMMUNICATION AND GROWTH

"CHILDREN OF GOD"

Communication is really about realizing that we are all human beings, children of God. I
like seeing this power of communication as "neighborliness".

"PASSERSBY ON THE DIGITAL HIGHWAY"

It is not enough to be passersby on the digital highways, simply "connected"; connections
need to grow into true encounters. We cannot live apart, closed in on ourselves. We need to
love and be loved. We need tenderness.

A NETWORK OF PEOPLE

The digital world can be an environment rich in humanity; a network not of wires but of
people.

THE INCARNATION AND THE CHURCH

"No sooner had He said this than He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight." -Acts 1:9

Jesus' Ascension seemed to have ended our time to benefit from His Incarnation. We could no longer see God face to face, hear Him, and touch Him. However, Jesus had promised that He would not leave us orphaned (Jn 14:18). He would be with us always (Mt 28:20), and it is better for us that He go (Jn 16:7).
Jesus knew that His apostles would not understand His Ascension, so He told them to remain in Jerusalem. Within a few days, they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5). They obeyed the Lord after His Ascension and "returned to Jerusalem filled with joy. There they were to be found in the temple constantly, speaking the praises of God" (Lk 24:52-53). "Together they devoted themselves to constant prayer" (Acts 1:14).
After nine days of prayer, 120 of Jesus' disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:15; 2:4). They baptized 3,000 people that day (Acts 2:41), and the Church was born. This newborn Church eventually came to be recognized as the body of Christ, the continuation and development of Jesus' Incarnation (e.g. 1 Cor 12:12; Eph 1:23).
Pray for nine days (a novena) for the Holy Spirit to come and guide you to all truth (Jn 16:13), especially the truth about His Incarnation and the Church.

Prayer: Father, I accept Your grace to pray for nine days. Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "He has put all things under Christ's feet and has made Him, thus exalted, Head of the Church, which is His body: the fullness of Him Who fills the universe in all its parts." -Eph 1:22-23

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is risen, ascended, and glorified! Praise God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit!
