THE NEW, TRUE HEART

"Wicked designs come from the deep recesses of the heart." -Mark 7:21

Solomon had the wisest and most understanding heart ever (1 Kgs 3:12), but "when Solomon was old his wives had turned his heart to strange gods, and his heart was not entirely with the Lord, his God, as the heart of his father David had been" (1 Kgs 11:4). Solomon's name means "peace," and he had an exceptionally peaceful reign until he turned his heart away from the Lord. Then wars and civil war emerged from his heart.

When the Lord changed our hearts at our Baptism (see Ez 36:26), He gave us new names and made us new creations (see Gal 6:15). From this new heart comes forth "love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity" (Gal 5:22-23) instead of "acts of fornication, theft, murder, adulterous conduct, greed, maliciousness, deceit, sensuality, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, an obtuse spirit" (Mk 7:21-22). Therefore, let us be faithful to our baptismal promises, keep our hearts in Jesus, and be our new and true selves.

Learn from the Sacred Heart of Jesus to be "gentle and humble of heart" (Mt 11:29). Ask Mary, with her immaculate heart, to lay bare the thoughts of many hearts, including your own (Lk 2:35). May the Word of God judge "the reflections and thoughts of the heart" (Heb 4:12). Then may God's Word burn and purify our hearts (Lk 24:32). Sacred Heart of Jesus, turn our hearts ever more to You and never away from You, our Baptism, and our true selves.

Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

Promise: "Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report I heard." -1 Kgs 10:7

Praise: Alice and Charles prayerfully chose spouses who believed in putting God first.

TRADITIONAL? - One Bread, One Body, 2/6/2018

Tuesday, February 6, 2018, St. Paul Miki & Companions

TRADITIONAL?

"This people pays Me lip service but their heart is far from Me. Empty is the reverence they do Me because they teach as dogmas mere human precepts." -Mark 7:6-7; Isaiah 29:13

There are divine traditions - the magisterial teachings of the Church and the Bible. These divine traditions are the truth (see 2 Thes 2:15). They cannot be changed. We must conform our lives to these divine traditions. On Judgment Day, we will be judged according to these divine traditions.

There are also human traditions. These are often very helpful to people. However, sometimes a human tradition becomes a diabolical stronghold (see 2 Cor 10:4). Good human traditions are to be respected but should never be placed above divine traditions. Bad human traditions must be overthrown by the power of the Holy Spirit.

How can we tell if a tradition is divine or human? Although this is usually obvious, sometimes it is a matter of interpretation. The Church, which alone is "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15), is the only body which can authoritatively tell us what is divine or human tradition.

How can we tell if a human tradition is good or bad? Although we will probably know this by the fruit of the tradition (see Lk 6:44), this may take too long or again be a matter of interpretation. Once again, we need the Church. Otherwise, we will probably make tragic mistakes, even if we are sincere.

Thank God for revealing Himself to us and loving us through traditions. Thank God for the Church and the grace to submit to the Church's authority.

Prayer: Father, may I love You, the Church, and her Bible. May this love free me.

Promise: "Listen to the petitions of Your servant and of Your people Israel which they offer in this place. Listen from Your heavenly dwelling and grant pardon." -1 Kgs 8:30

Praise: St. Paul Miki chose obedience to the Lord to obedience to the emperor. Trusting God fully, he died as a martyr.

"YOU ARE MY HIDING PLACE" - One Bread, One Body, 2/5/2018

Monday, February 5, 2018, St. Agatha

1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13, Psalm 132:6-10, Mark 6:53-56
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/020518.cfm

"YOU ARE MY HIDING PLACE"

"The Lord intends to dwell in the dark cloud." -1 Kings 8:12

In today's first Eucharistic reading and psalm response, God makes the Temple His home on earth. Yet in the process of dwelling among us, God hides in the dark cloud which fills the Temple (1 Kgs 8:10ff). In today's Gospel reading, Jesus, God incarnate, leaves that Temple and goes out to Gentile territory. Yet shortly thereafter Jesus hides Himself and "wanted no one to recognize Him" (Mk 7:24). The people must search for Him (see Mk 6:55).

It seems that God, in His mystery, chooses to reveal Himself by hiding. In so doing, God reveals He is a Person Who wishes to be known by love. Did you ever hide yourself in your bedroom, hoping that the cute guy or girl in your school would miraculously give you a phone call? If so, you have a glimpse of the feeling the Lord has toward us when He seemingly is hiding from us.

The good news is that, by His hiding, the Lord is available to us all. He doesn't hide due to a lack of love, but rather out of a desire to draw us out of ourselves, away from the lures of the world, the flesh, and the devil (see 1 Jn 2:16). He hides from us because of the intensity of His love for us. God's Word implores us to seek Him while He may be found (Is 55:6). Jesus urges us to seek and we will find (Mt 7:8). Jesus hides on the cross, turning down His glory and humbling Himself. He hides in a tabernacle, in a host, and in the chalice. He hides Himself in His Word.

From the cross, Jesus exclaimed: "I am thirsty" (Jn 19:28). Give Jesus a drink. Search for Him and find Him. Jesus is not hiding from you; He is hiding for you. Make your heart His hiding place, and He will hide Himself in you (Jn 6:56; 17:23).

Prayer: Jesus, give me the strength to bring others through the cloud into Your arms of love.

Promise: "Let us enter into His dwelling, let us worship at His footstool." Ps132:7

Praise: The virgin St. Agatha dedicated herself to her Spouse, giving up her safety, health, and even her life for Jesus.

PM eNewsletter 5th Sunday in ordinary time

February 4th Fifth Sunday in Ordinary time.

Dear God, we thank you for ordinary time, please help us to stay ordinary, we really don't
realize how good life is until something goes wrong.

Jesus, there are so many people who have loved ones in the hospital who would love to go back
to ordinary time.

And Jesus, we again thank you for our mother "Our Lady of Lourdes".

Again Jesus, you have allowed mom to show the world the healing power of your Eucharist and
the holy waters, blessed by You.

How many critics are confounded when they try to disprove the miracles of Lourdes.

Jesus, keep us aware of your healing love and presence.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday I KNOW MY REDEEMER LIVES (SEE JB 19:25)
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/4/2018

"I shall not see happiness again." -Job 7:7

How many of you can identify with Job in his hopeless misery? (Jb 7:3) Your situation is so bad
that you can say: "I loathe my life. I will give myself up to complaint; I will speak from the
bitterness of my soul" (Jb 10:1). "I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights...
I am filled with restlessness until the dawn...My days...come to an end without hope...I shall
not see happiness again" (Jb 7:3, 4, 6, 7).

God's plan is not to spare us from difficult times; His plan is to be with us in our
difficulties. God sent His only Son Jesus, Who is called "Emmanuel, a name which means 'God is
with us' " (Mt 1:23). The true test of a Christian comes in the crosses of our lives. Our
actions in times of distress tell God whether we want Jesus with us or whether we just want to
be spared adversity.

If we know Jesus is with us, we can face adversity with hope and even joy. With the prophet
Habakkuk, we declare in hope: "For though the fig tree blossom not nor fruit be on the vines,
though the yield of the olive fail and the terraces produce no nourishment, though the flocks
disappear from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet will I rejoice in the Lord and
exult in my saving God. God, my Lord, is my Strength" (Hab 3:17-19).

Job looked up to heaven in his misery and saw the Lord for himself (Jb 42:5). Knowing God was
with him made all the difference for Job. Know Jesus; know hope. No Jesus; no hope. "Fix your
eyes on Jesus" (Heb 3:1), the only Hope you need.

Prayer: Jesus, pour out Your love in my wounded heart (Rm 5:5).

Promise: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." -Ps 147:3

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (Jn 14:6). You died that we
might have abundant life! (Jn 10:10)

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-01.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

"MOST IMPORTANT"

Mother of God is the most important title of Our Lady.

GOD IS CLOSE TO US

To call Mary the Mother of God reminds us of this: God is close to humanity, even as a child is
close to the mother who bears him in her womb.

"BELOVED CHILDREN"

Ours is the joy of knowing that our solitude has ended. It is the beauty of knowing that we are
beloved children, of knowing that this childhood of ours can never be taken away from us. It is
to see a reflection of ourselves in the frail and infant God resting in His mother's arms, and to
realize that humanity is precious and sacred to the Lord. Henceforth, to serve human life is to
serve God.

CARDIAC CARE - One Bread, One Body, 2/3/2018

Saturday, February 3, 2018, St. Blase, St. Ansgar

1 Kings 3:4-13, Psalm 119:9-14, Mark 6:30-34

CARDIAC CARE

"Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart." -1 Kings 3:9

Solomon asked for and received "a heart so wise and understanding that there [had] never been anyone like" him (1 Kgs 3:12). However, "when Solomon was old his wives had turned his heart to strange gods, and his heart was not entirely with the Lord, his God, as the heart of his father David had been" (1 Kgs 11:4). Solomon, the owner of what was the best heart in the world, suffered heart failure because of his sinfulness, especially idolatry.

On this first Saturday of the month, we think of Mary's immaculate heart. Her heart was even better than Solomon's, but she did not suffer heart failure. Rather, her heart was pierced many times, especially on Calvary, "so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare" (Lk 2:35). Through Mary's faithful, suffering, immaculate heart, we can receive help in accepting her Son's graces to resist temptations and thereby avoid heart failure. If our hearts have already failed, Mary is praying from her heart for our repentance.

Prevent or recover from a heart attack. Accept Mary as your mother (Jn 19:25ff) and intercessor (see Jn 2:5). "Guard your heart" (Prv 4:23).

Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like Yours (see Mt 11:29).

Promise: Jesus "pitied them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them at great length." -Mk 6:34

Praise: St. Ansgar was born in France. However, zeal to evangelize led him to Germany, Denmark, and Scandinavia to spread the gospel.

PRESENT-ABLE? - One Bread, One Body, 2/2/2018

Friday, February 2, 2018, Presentation of the Lord

PRESENT-ABLE?

Mary and Joseph "came to offer in sacrifice 'a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.' " -Luke 2:24

In presenting their children to the Lord, Jewish parents made a small sacrifice in place of sacrificing their children. However, in Jesus' Presentation, a small sacrifice did not replace a great sacrifice; rather, it prefigured Jesus' ultimate sacrifice on Calvary. Therefore, Jesus' Presentation is not a calling to less sacrifice but to sharing in Jesus' perfect sacrifice.

Today, we are called to be like Mary and open our hearts to be pierced with a sword of suffering (Lk 2:35). We are called to be like Anna, "worshiping day and night in fasting and prayer" (Lk 2:37). We should be like the candles blessed at Mass today and decide to be consumed as was Jesus so that His light will shine to all the world.

Today is a day of being crucified with Christ (Gal 2:19) and of finding our joy in suffering (Col 1:24) according to the pattern of His death (Phil 3:10). The Presentation is no longer in the Temple but at the cross. In love, present yourself to the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, in the school of unconditional love, teach me how to suffer.

Promise: "Now, Master, You can dismiss Your servant in peace; You have fulfilled Your word." -Lk 2:29

Praise: We praise You, Jesus, the Light of the World! Praise You for giving us the light of life (Jn 8:12). Alleluia!

WALK HIS WAY

"They were, however, to wear sandals." -Mark 6:9

Have you ever done any backpacking or long-distance hiking? If so, you have the potential to relate well to Jesus' instructions in today's Gospel reading. Modern-day backpackers understand very well the critical need of traveling as light as possible. Only the bare essentials are carried on the journey. Otherwise, carrying too much weight in your pack weighs you down and slows you down. Backpackers and hikers also understand the importance of proper foot gear. Without sturdy hiking boots, a backpacker won't travel far and probably will not persevere on the journey. Likewise, a hiking staff or trekking poles help the walker maintain balance and cover more territory on the journey.

Jesus, when sending out His disciples on mission, instructed them to take almost nothing, only sandals and a walking stick (Mk 6:8-9). As with the backpacker, both sandals and walking stick enable the disciples to cover more miles without wearing down.

A backpacker would not leave on a trip without proper food, water, or the proper clothing and gear. Yet Jesus tells His disciples to take no sack, pack, food, money, and yet to travel long distances carrying the good news (Mk 6:8). Walking like this requires a supernatural trust in and abandonment to the loving provision of the Father. Evangelizing has an ecology to it, and Jesus provides everything necessary. People notice this kind of radical trust in the Father, and they respond to it. Jesus tells us precisely how to spread the Good News. Walk His way.

Prayer: Father, help me to follow Jesus' instructions exactly each day.

Promise: "They expelled many demons, anointed the sick with oil, and worked many cures." -Mk 6:13

Praise: Walking the hundreds of miles of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain changed Jim's life.
