TALKING ABOUT LOVE
"When the Paraclete comes, the Spirit of truth Who comes from the Father - and Whom I Myself will send from the Father - He will bear witness on My behalf." -John 15:26
The Holy Spirit bears witness for Jesus, and we must bear witness too (Jn 15:27). When we witness for Jesus, we will see God open the hearts of many people, and they will give their lives to Jesus (see Acts 16:14-15). On the other hand, in our witnessing for Jesus, we will encounter strong opposition. Some of those putting us to death will even think they are worshipping God (Jn 16:2).
Witnessing for Jesus means telling someone about your personal experience of Jesus' love. Witnessing is very simple. We do it frequently when we bring up how parents, spouses, children, family, and friends love us. The Lord has chosen to make witnessing for Him extremely powerful in proclaiming His Gospel to the world. Thus, witnessing is especially threatening to the devil (see Rv 12:11), who vehemently attacks anyone who even thinks of witnessing for Jesus. However, the Lord has given His witnesses a Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, Who will give power and boldness to Jesus' witnesses, especially when the devil is trying to intimidate them (Acts 1:8). Then, they witness with power to Jesus' death and Resurrection (Acts 4:33) and make disciples for Jesus of all the nations (Mt 28:19).
Don't give in to the evil spirit's intimidation. Rather, give in to the grace of the Holy Spirit to witness for Jesus.
Prayer: Father, may I witness for Jesus throughout my life and all the way to death.
Promise: "I have told you all this to keep your faith from being shaken." -Jn 16:1
Praise: Clara felt the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Now she serves as Jesus' hands and feet for hurting people.
(On June 22-24, we offer a retreat, "Forty Hours Devotion and Family Campout", followed by a "Family Vacation with the Lord" on June 25-29 at the Paul Jansen Discipleship Center in Adams County, Ohio. Call 513-373-2397 or 937-587-5464 for info.)

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday WHO CAN'T TEACH YOU?
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/6/2018
"As Peter entered, Cornelius went to meet him, dropped to his knees before him and bowed low."
-Acts 10:25
The Holy Spirit wants to teach us all things (Jn 14:26). For example, He wants to teach us how
to be parents, wives, husbands, lay single people, and members of religious communities. The
Spirit wants to teach us how to spend our money, eat, talk, think, work, love, live, and die.
Because the Holy Spirit wants to teach us so much, the proper relationship with Him is to be
teachable, that is, docile.
Most of the time the Spirit does not teach us directly but indirectly. He teaches us through
people, such as parents, pastors, spouses, brothers, sisters, strangers, and even enemies. To
be docile means to be able to learn from anyone the Holy Spirit chooses to teach through. For
example, Cornelius, a powerful Roman centurion, was humbly submissive to the teaching of Peter,
an uneducated Jewish fisherman (see Acts 10:25ff). The secretary of the treasury of the
Ethiopian government asked the simple Philip to teach him from the Bible (Acts 8:27ff).
Who do you consider to be the last person in the world to teach you anything? If the Spirit so
chooses, are you willing to be taught by him or her? If so, you are docile and ready to receive
the Holy Spirit. If not, you are in danger of rejecting the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Father, teach me about being teachable.
Promise: "Love, then, consists in this: not that we have loved God but that He has loved us and
has sent His Son as an Offering for our sins." -1 Jn 4:10
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who through His Word and Eucharist is with us always. Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
FAKE NEWS, TRUTH, AND PEACE
"A JOURNALISM OF PEACE"
I would like ... to invite everyone to promote a journalism of peace... I mean a journalism that
is truthful and opposed to falsehoods, rhetorical slogans, and sensational headlines. A
journalism created by people for people, one that is at the service of all, especially those ...
who have no voice. A journalism less concentrated on breaking news than on exploring the
underlying causes of conflicts, in order to promote deeper understanding and contribute to their
resolution by setting in place virtuous processes. A journalism committed to pointing out
alternatives to the escalation of shouting matches and verbal violence.
"GOD'S PLAN"
Communication is part of God's plan for us and an essential way to experience fellowship. Made in
the image and likeness of our Creator, we are able to express and share all that is true, good,
and beautiful. We are able to describe our own experiences and the world around us, and thus to
create historical memory and understanding of events. But when we yield to our own pride and
selfishness, we can also distort the way we use our ability to communicate.
FAKE NEWS IS GROWING
... We are witnessing the spread of what has come to be known as "fake news". This calls for
reflection, which is why I have decided to return in this ... Message to the issue of truth, which
was raised time and time again by my predecessors...

WHO CAN'T TEACH YOU?
"As Peter entered, Cornelius went to meet him, dropped to his knees before him and bowed low." -Acts 10:25
The Holy Spirit wants to teach us all things (Jn 14:26). For example, He wants to teach us how to be parents, wives, husbands, lay single people, and members of religious communities. The Spirit wants to teach us how to spend our money, eat, talk, think, work, love, live, and die. Because the Holy Spirit wants to teach us so much, the proper relationship with Him is to be teachable, that is, docile.
Most of the time the Spirit does not teach us directly but indirectly. He teaches us through people, such as parents, pastors, spouses, brothers, sisters, strangers, and even enemies. To be docile means to be able to learn from anyone the Holy Spirit chooses to teach through. For example, Cornelius, a powerful Roman centurion, was humbly submissive to the teaching of Peter, an uneducated Jewish fisherman (see Acts 10:25ff). The secretary of the treasury of the Ethiopian government asked the simple Philip to teach him from the Bible (Acts 8:27ff).
Who do you consider to be the last person in the world to teach you anything? If the Spirit so chooses, are you willing to be taught by him or her? If so, you are docile and ready to receive the Holy Spirit. If not, you are in danger of rejecting the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Father, teach me about being teachable.
Promise: "Love, then, consists in this: not that we have loved God but that He has loved us and has sent His Son as an Offering for our sins." -1 Jn 4:10
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who through His Word and Eucharist is with us always. Alleluia!
(For a related teaching on "Arrogance", order, listen to or download our CD 52-1 or DVD 52 on our website.)

GROW - One Bread, One Body, 5/5/2018

GROW
"The congregations grew stronger in faith and daily increased in numbers." -Acts 16:5
The Lord is very interested in the growth of individuals and congregations. He delights in our growth as a parent delights in their child's first step or first word. The Lord wants congregations to grow both in faith and in numbers (see Acts 16:5). Growing in quality and quantity are not two separate types of growth, but eventually go together. If we truly have a strong faith, we will be strong in evangelizing and leading many to Christ.
The Lord wants every Christian and every Christian congregation to grow in age, wisdom, and grace as He did (see Lk 2:40, 52). He commands us: "Be as eager for milk as newborn babies - pure milk of the Spirit to make you grow unto salvation" (1 Pt 2:2). So let us "grow to the full maturity of Christ the Head. Through Him the whole body grows" (Eph 4:15-16).
The second letter of Peter is possibly the last book of the Bible chronologically. In the last verse of the last chapter of what may be the last book of two-thousand years of written, divine revelation, the Lord commands us: "Grow rather in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Glory be to Him now and to the day of eternity! Amen" (2 Pt 3:18). The last word is "grow."
Prayer: Father, in these last two weeks of the Easter season may I grow by leaps and bounds.
Promise: "Know that the Lord is God; He made us, His we are." -Ps 100:3
Praise: Laura and her children pray daily for an end to abortion.
(For a related teaching on "Evangelization", order, listen to or download our CD 55-1 or DVD 55 on our website.)

LASTING LOVE
"Your fruit must endure." -John 15:16
Jesus, the Vine, commands us, the branches, to bear fruit that is not only abundant but also lasting (Jn 15:16). Our commitment to the Lord and the commitments of those whom we have led to the Lord will last, if these commitments are:
* "rooted in [Jesus] and built up in Him" (Col 2:7),
* confirmed by the Holy Spirit,
* founded on the rock of hearing and obeying God's Word (Mt 7:24ff),
* in submission to the authority of the Church, "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15),
* fire-tried by "the distress of many trials" (1 Pt 1:6-7), and
* surrounded by a cloud of witnesses (Heb 12:1).
Jesus is "the First and the Last" (Rv 22:13). His love for us endures forever. May our love for Him last forever.
Prayer: Father, You are my first and last Love (see Rv 2:4).
Promise: "When it was read there was great delight at the encouragement it gave." -Acts 15:31
Praise: Janet had never fasted a whole day before, but did so for the first time on a Friday, the day her Lord died.

ON SPEAKING TERMS WITH YOUR ENEMIES - One Bread, One Body, 5/3/2018

ON SPEAKING TERMS WITH YOUR ENEMIES
"Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge." -Psalm 19:3
To the man who would later be called "doubting Thomas," Jesus gave one of the greatest revelations in the history of the human race. Jesus told Thomas: "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me" (Jn 14:6).
Jesus was profoundly disappointed in Philip, who did not know Jesus or His Father after "all this time" (Jn 14:9). Nonetheless, Jesus gave to Philip this awesome revelation: "I solemnly say to you, whoever believes in Me will do the works that I do, and greater than these" (Jn 14:12, our transl).
Because Jesus is forgiving and merciful, He sometimes gives the greatest revelations to people who are weak and sinful. When people disappoint us, we naturally are reluctant to open up to them. Nonetheless, Jesus stretches out His arms to people who may even nail His arms to a cross rather than embrace Him. Jesus may reveal Himself to us even when we are at our worst.
Let us follow in Jesus' footsteps by:
* forgiving and loving our enemies,
* reaching out to them, and
* giving them mercy, that is, treating them better than they deserve.
We will suffer when we love as Jesus loves. Nevertheless, the purpose of life in Christ is not to minimize suffering but to maximize love. Follow the crucified Christ in thought, deed, and word.
Prayer: Father, make me not defensive, but merciful.
Promise: "Brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and in which you stand firm. You are being saved by it at this very moment if you hold fast to it as I preached it to you." -1 Cor 15:1-2
Praise: After receiving the Holy Spirit in the upper room, both St. Philip and St. James boldly followed the footsteps of Jesus, even to death as martyrs.

JESUS OR NOTHING - One Bread, One Body, 5/2/2018

JESUS OR NOTHING
"Apart from Me you can do nothing." -John 15:5
Business leaders understand well the concept of cutting activities out of the business process that are not profitable. Sports coaches and athletic trainers also understand cutting out practice drills and plays which are not productive. Farmers don't waste their limited time on activities which do not increase the yield of crops, flock, or herd. So, Jesus' teaching on pruning the branches which don't bear fruit is well understood by many.
What is not as well understood in our culture is the weakness of the human will without the strength of the Lord. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (see Rm 7:18). On our own, our endurance will eventually fade. Only by remaining in Jesus can we bear fruit for Him (Jn 15:4-5). Outside of Jesus, we will ultimately wither and fade (Jn 15:6).
So often in our culture of death, secular society teaches that the human spirit will triumph, to "just do it," or taking this course will make you successful, etc. Jesus, on the other hand, states bluntly, "Apart from Me you can do nothing" (Jn 15:5). Jesus couldn't make the message any clearer: A person either remains in Jesus or withers (Jn 15:4-6).
Prayer: Father, may I never treat Your gracious gift of Your Son Jesus as meaning nothing (Gal 2:21). I want to spend my life as a Spirit-filled disciple.
Promise: "Their story caused great joy among the brothers." -Acts 15:3
Praise: St. Athanasius fought Arianism and suffered for the Faith. He fought against the denial of Jesus' divinity most of his seventy-seven years.
(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.) (For a teaching on "Pentecost Novena", order, listen to or download our CD 103-1 or DVD 103 on our website as this novena begins May 11, 2018.)
