PM eNewsletter Ascension Sunday

May 13th Ascension Sunday

Jesus, we celebrate Your Ascension into heaven.

You came to be one of us and pay the price for our sins.

You absolutely deserve to rise up into heaven and sit on Your throne of glory.

Jesus, teach us to be truly grateful to You, and the Father, for loving us and for the Holy
Spirit to guide us.

Christ, we are so weak, and so normal, and we have such a short attention span, that we so
soon forget our fervor.

Rekindle in us the fire of the Holy Spirit, that we may be renewed, and receive Your gifts
that will let us do Your will all the days of our lives.

Let us prepare for Pentecost by going to confession, and getting any stain of sin off of
our souls, and open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to come and make His abode in us.

Let us go on fire with desire to serve You in all things, and in all of our actions.

Let us be Your hands, Your heart, Your eyes, in other words Your instuments of love.

Thank you Jesus.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW ______"
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/13/2018

"No sooner had He said this than He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him
from their sight." -Acts 1:9

For almost forty years, a good Catholic father told his children to live for Jesus and to love
Jesus especially by going to Mass - not only on Sundays but daily, or as often as possible.
However, although some of his children went to Mass on Sundays, they never made the decision to
live for Jesus. Then the father said again what he had said for all those years, but this time
he died. The children could no longer so easily dismiss or ignore their father's words. One of
his sons gave his life to Jesus and centered his life on the Eucharist.

For many years, Jesus has told His disciples many things. We are to:

downsize our lifestyles and choose poverty (Mt 5:3),
love and forgive our enemies (see Mt 5:44),
deny ourselves and take up our crosses each day (Lk 9:23),
wash the feet of others in sacrificial service (see Jn 13:5ff),
devote ourselves to God's Word and the communal life (Acts 2:42), and
spend our lives in being witnesses for Jesus (Acts 1:8).

Many Christians have ignored these commands of Jesus. However, when Jesus ascended, His
disciples could not so easily dismiss His words.

May we receive this grace of the Ascension today. On this third day of the Pentecost novena, may
we respond to Jesus' words and take Him seriously.

Prayer: Jesus, may Your ways of being "absent" help me be more present and obedient to You.

Promise: "The Lord continued to work with them." -Mk 16:20

Praise: Praise the risen Lord, Who ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-04.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

FAKE NEWS, TRUTH, AND PEACE

REDISCOVER DIGNITY

... I would like to contribute to our shared commitment to stemming the spread of fake news and
to rediscovering the dignity of journalism and the personal responsibility of journalists to
communicate the truth.

"RADICAL ANTIDOTE"

So how do we defend ourselves? The most radical antidote to the virus of falsehood is
purification by the truth. In Christianity, truth is not just a just a conceptual reality that
regards how we judge things, defining them as true or false... Truth involves our whole life...
Truth is something you can lean on, so as not to fall... The only truly reliable and trustworthy
One ... is the Living God. Hence, Jesus can say: "I am the truth"( Jn 14:6)

JESUS LIBERATES

We discover and rediscover the truth when we experience it within ourselves in the loyalty and
trustworthiness of the One who loves us. This alone can liberate us: "The truth will set you
free" (Jn 8:32).

"ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW ______"

"No sooner had He said this than He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight." -Acts 1:9

For almost forty years, a good Catholic father told his children to live for Jesus and to love Jesus especially by going to Mass - not only on Sundays but daily, or as often as possible. However, although some of his children went to Mass on Sundays, they never made the decision to live for Jesus. Then the father said again what he had said for all those years, but this time he died. The children could no longer so easily dismiss or ignore their father's words. One of his sons gave his life to Jesus and centered his life on the Eucharist.

For many years, Jesus has told His disciples many things. We are to:

* downsize our lifestyles and choose poverty (Mt 5:3),

Many Christians have ignored these commands of Jesus. However, when Jesus ascended, His disciples could not so easily dismiss His words.

May we receive this grace of the Ascension today. On this third day of the Pentecost novena, may we respond to Jesus' words and take Him seriously.

ASKING ANYWAY - One Bread, One Body, 5/12/2018

Saturday, May 12, 2018, Sts. Nereus & Achilleus, St. Pancras, Pentecost Novena - Day 2

Acts 18:23-28, Psalm 47:2-3, 8-10, John 16:23-28
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/051218.cfm

ASKING ANYWAY

"Until now you have not asked for anything in My name..." -John 16:24

When I take my youngest son to piano lessons, he always asks me to buy him an ice cream cone. Sometimes I have no money or time; other times I do buy him the cone. Yet even if it's been weeks without a cone, he never neglects to ask.

Jesus Himself tells us: "I give you My assurance, whatever you ask the Father, He will give you in My name" (Jn 16:23). Often Christians are disappointed when the answer to a sincere prayer request was not what was asked for. One response is to lose faith in Jesus' promise, get discouraged, and not ask Jesus for certain things. Another response is the childlike response of my son: to keep asking persistently, never losing heart (Lk 18:1).

So much is wrong with today's world. Is it because we have asked selfishly, and not rightly, that is, in Jesus name? (Jas 4:3) I wonder if "until now" we have asked for much of anything in Jesus' name (Jn 16:24). We need the Holy Spirit to be able to ask in Jesus' name (Jn 16:24) and to do so persistently. During this Pentecost novena, let us fervently beg to receive the Holy Spirit deeply, so that we may ask in Jesus' name for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Mt 6:10). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, we ask, in Jesus' name, for Catholics to repent deeply, receive the Holy Spirit in fullness, live the radical newness of their Baptism daily, be perfect in holiness, desire to attend Mass daily, foster and receive religious vocations, evangelize the world, change the culture of death to a civilization of love and life, serve the poor and lowly, submit in unity to the Magisterium...

Promise: "Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full." -Jn 16:24

Praise: Sts. Nereus and Achilleus cried out "Abba," threw down their arms as soldiers, and gave their lives over to Christ.

THE PENTECOST NOVENA - One Bread, One Body, 5/11/2018

Friday, May 11, 2018, Pentecost Novena - Day 1

Acts 18:9-18, Psalm 47:2-7, John 16:20-23

THE PENTECOST NOVENA

"On that day you will have no questions to ask Me." -John 16:23

When we are with Jesus in heaven, all the difficult questions will pass away. We won't need to know why bad things happen on this earth. Seeing Jesus face-to-face will be more than enough. Being with Jesus will cause all else to melt away.

Until that day in heaven for which we long and sacrifice, we do not have the answers we want. Rather, we have the Answer, that is, the Holy Spirit. Today begins the Pentecost Novena, nine days of prayer to prepare for receiving the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. Do you want answers to your difficult questions? Or do you want the Answer? Life in the Spirit is enough, and indeed, is more than enough. The Spirit consoles us and empowers us to bear fruit.

Eventually, in His presence, all of our confusions will melt away. Only His love will remain, along with the presence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Seek the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will give you the wisdom you need. During this Pentecost Novena, ask the Lord for that which He most wants to give you: the promise of the Father, that is, the gift of the Holy Spirit (Lk 24:49).

Prayer: Father, give me deep repentance and purification through this novena.

Promise: "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not be silenced, for I am with you. No one will attack you or harm you. There are many of My people in this city." -Acts 18:9-10

Praise: Mark received the gift of healing others at a Life in the Spirit seminar.

TALKING IN CHURCH - One Bread, One Body, 5/10/2018

Thursday, May 10, 2018, St. Damien of Moloka'i

Acts 18:1-8, Psalm 98:1-4, John 16:16-20
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/051018.cfm

TALKING IN CHURCH

"Every sabbath, in the synagogue, Paul led discussions in which he persuaded certain Jews and Greeks." -Acts 18:4

It's not unusual to see people talking in church in the USA. People greet one another before or after Mass. They talk about their children, politics, sports, the obituaries, school, the weather, etc. Some even discuss church-related things, such as parish politics or issues about the parish school. How many people in church talk about Jesus?

Every week, St. Paul talked in church about Jesus. He attempted to persuade anyone who would listen that Jesus is "the Messiah" (Acts 18:5). Paul determined that he "would speak of nothing but Jesus Christ" (1 Cor 2:2). When he talked about Jesus, Paul had mixed results. Some "sneered, while others said. 'We must hear you on this topic some other time' " (Acts 17:32). Some people "opposed him and insulted him" (Acts 18:6). Others "did join him, however, to become believers" (Acts 17:34). "Many of the Corinthians, too, who heard Paul believed and were baptized" (Acts 18:8).

We have only "a short time" in this lifetime to tell people about Jesus (see Jn 16:17; 1 Cor 7:29). "The Lord has made His salvation known" (Ps 98:2) by raising us up as His witnesses (Acts 2:32). We are ambassadors for Christ to the world (2 Cor 5:20). "Avoid worldly, idle talk, for those who indulge in it become more and more godless" (2 Tm 2:16). Offer your tongue, your heart, and your speech to the Lord "as weapons for justice" (see Rm 6:13). Tell your church and your world about Jesus.

Prayer: Father, as the Pentecost Novena approaches, send the Holy Spirit to teach me "what to say and how to speak" (Jn 12:49).

Promise: "A leading man of the synagogue, Crispus, along with his whole household, put his faith in the Lord. Many of the Corinthians, too, who heard Paul believed and were baptized." -Acts 18:8

Praise: St. Damien spent the last years of his life as a leper, just like those he served in Moloka'i, Hawaii.

HOW MUCH MORE WILL YOU WANT?

"I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now." -John 16:12

We need the Pentecost Novena, which starts in two days, because we are not ready to hear what Jesus desires to tell us. No matter how close we are to the Lord, He always has "much more" for us (Jn 16:12) - more ministry, more peace, more stretching.

We may already be stretched as far as we think possible. Like a woman in the last month of pregnancy, we may not think it's possible to be stretched any further. Yet the woman wakes up the next morning to discover she has stretched even more. She knows that in the days to come, she will keep stretching.

You might not see how you could possibly forgive the person who hurt you. You are so busy with the kids, how could you find time and energy for one more thing? So in that sense, you may not be ready to hear the "much more" that Jesus has to tell you.

This is why the Church, in her wisdom, takes the time for the coming Pentecost Novena. If we're too busy to pray, we're too busy. If we're too busy for the Holy Spirit, we're too busy. Clear your calendar. Ask the Lord during the Pentecost Novena for the grace to receive the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, open me, stretch me, enlarge me to receive the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "When He comes, however, being the Spirit of truth He will guide you to all truth." -Jn 16:13

Praise: Fr. Allen went from "good" to the Best at Pentecost. His parishioners then kept commenting on how his homilies touched them in exactly the areas in which they were hurting the most.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

THE ONLY LIFE WORTH DYING FOR

"I will give thanks to You, O Lord, with all my heart." -Psalm 138:1

The "radical newness" of the Christian life (see Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10) is sometimes buried under our sins and lukewarmness (see Rv 3:16). In our refusal to abandon ourselves totally to the Lord, we make Christianity a club, game, organization, or private avocation. However, life in Christ is not merely one option as a possible way of life. It is the only Way that is true, life-giving, loving, freeing, and victorious over death. To be a Christian is the most radical and exciting adventure that a human being can ever decide to go on.

Our life in Christ is the only life worth dying for. In and for Christ it is our privilege to be attacked, stripped, flogged, whipped, jailed, and martyred (see Acts 16:22ff). In the Christian life, the earth quakes, prisons are rocked, doors fly open, and chains are snapped (Acts 16:26ff). Life without Christ is so boring that only those blinded by sin and dead in sin could stand it.

What are you waiting for? Choose life (see Dt 30:19), excitement, and love. "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, and all your household" (Acts 16:31).

Prayer: Father, give me the life worth dying for.

Promise: "Yet I tell you the sober truth: it is much better for you that I go. If I fail to go, the Paraclete will never come to you, whereas if I go, I will send Him to you." -Jn 16:7

Praise: Ann prays the Scriptures when she suffers through a sleepless night.
