BOAT-PEOPLE

"They wanted to take Him into the boat." -John 6:21

Before Jesus gets into the boat, it is dark (Jn 6:16) "with a strong wind blowing" (Jn 6:18) and the sea "becoming rough" (Jn 6:18). The rowing is difficult, and progress is slow. But when we see the risen Jesus and want "to take Him into the boat" (Jn 6:21), suddenly we cover miles and reach our destination (Jn 6:21).

Do you want Jesus to come into the boat of your life? If you do, you must give your life to Him and let it be done unto you according to God's Word (Lk 1:38). You must lose your life in order for Jesus to come into your life and save it (Lk 9:24). When you let Jesus into your life, you will carry His cross daily (Lk 9:23).

However, the yoke of His cross is surprisingly easy and light (Mt 11:30). With Jesus in your life, you will not continue to go around in circles; instead, you will get somewhere. Where you have made little progress, you will make great progress - even quickly. When we invite Jesus to get into the boat, our lives change, and the world changes. Do you see Jesus "walking on the water"? (Jn 6:19) Invite Jesus in.

Prayer: Jesus, without You I can do nothing (Jn 15:5).

Promise: "The word of God continued to spread, while at the same time the number of the disciples in Jerusalem enormously increased. There were many priests among those who embraced the faith." -Acts 6:7

Praise: From her meager resources, Jane gives generously of her time and money to those in need.

MULTIPLICATION TESTS - One Bread, One Body, 4/13/2018

Friday, April 13, 2018, Pope St. Martin I

Acts 5:34-42, Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14, John 6:1-15
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/041318.cfm

MULTIPLICATION TESTS

"He knew well what He intended to do but He asked this to test Philip's response." -John 6:6

When Jesus saw several thousand people "coming toward Him, He said to Philip, 'Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?' " (Jn 6:5) "He asked this to test Philip's response" (Jn 6:6).

Jesus sees over four billion people who don't know Him personally and therefore don't even have the chance to love Him. Then, to test you, Jesus says to you: "Where will you and I obtain hundreds of thousands of workers for this harvest?" (see Mt 9:37) What will you say to Jesus? What will you do? Will you pass the test?

Jesus sees over nine million babies being killed by surgical and chemical abortion in the USA each year. To test you, He says to you: "What are we going to do about it?" Will you pass the test, or be bogged down in the apparent statistical impossibility of stopping Planned Parenthood and its henchmen?

Jesus sees countless broken marriages, single parents, fatherless children, broken hearts, abused people, refugees, oppressed people, sick people, etc. To test you, you know what Jesus is saying. What are you and Jesus going to do about it? Don't tell Jesus that you're only one person, you don't have much money, you're not famous, you're too old or too young, or nobody else is doing anything. Give Jesus all your loaves, all your fish, and all your life.

Prayer: Father, I give You my seemingly insignificant "all" to be multiplied into Your sufficiency.

Promise: "Day after day, both in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah." -Acts 5:42

Praise: Pope St. Martin I endured inhumane treatment in prison, public insults, and floggings for the sake of the Truth of the Faith.

OBEDIENCE SCHOOL - One Bread, One Body, 4/12/2018

OBEDIENCE SCHOOL

"Better for us to obey God than men!" -Acts 5:29

Sin and death entered the world through disobedience (Rm 5:15, 19). Salvation and eternal life came to us through the obedience of Jesus, Who obeyed His Father even to "death on a cross" (Phil 2:8). Thus, life is a matter of being obedient to God (see 1 Pt 1:2), and love is authentic only if we obey God's commandments (Jn 15:10). To obey the Lord is our delight (Ps 40:9), our food (Jn 4:34), and eternal life (Jn 3:36). To disobey the Lord is to put ourselves under a curse (Gal 3:10; Dt 27:26), to become slaves of the evil one (see Jn 8:34), and to "endure the wrath of God" (Jn 3:36).

In the next few weeks, as we approach the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, many of us may face some of our most difficult temptations to disobey the Lord. The devil may offer us very attractive bribes to disobey the Lord. If that doesn't work, he may threaten us with pain or even death. We must refuse to be intimidated (see Mt 10:26). We must say with the saints of all time: "Better for us to obey God than men!" (Acts 5:29)

The Holy Spirit is "given to those that obey" God (Acts 5:32). "Obey God" (Acts 5:29).

Prayer: Risen Jesus, teach me obedience - even through suffering, if necessary (Heb 5:8).

Promise: "He does not ration His gift of the Spirit." -Jn 3:34

Praise: Vince cut back his work week from forty to thirty-two hours so that he could spend more time teaching the faith to his children.

DARKNESS TO LIGHT

"He who acts in truth comes into the light, to make clear that his deeds are done in God." -John 3:21

The apostles, when released from prison, didn't run away in order to save themselves from future danger and legal trouble. Rather, they placed their trust in God and obeyed His command to teach in the Temple (Acts 5:20-21). Many heard the Good News as a result of their obedient faith and trust.

Paul and Silas were set free from prison (Acts 16:26), but they didn't run away to try to save themselves from future danger. Instead, they placed their trust in God and obeyed His command to minister the Good News of salvation to the jailer and his household (Acts 16:31ff). If they had run away, there would have been a dead jailer, a grieving wife and household, and unattended wounds all over the bodies of Paul and Silas. But by taking their place and teaching the Good News, there was a saved jailer, a saved household (Acts 16:31-34), and a new church formed in Philippi, which resulted in the letter to the Philippians. Paul and Silas knew Jesus was their Savior, so they trusted in His saving help and carried out His wishes instead of fleeing to "save themselves."

Where are you in danger? Is Jesus calling you to stand firm in the midst of the present danger and trust in Him as your Savior? Is He calling you to take your place and announce the Good News? (Acts 5:20)

Prayer: Jesus, may we live no longer for ourselves, but for You (2 Cor 5:15; Gal 2:20).

Promise: "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life." -Jn 3:16

Praise: St. Stanislaus' preaching changed hearts. He lovingly cared for his diocese, including his own brother, the King, who had him murdered.

OUR NEED FOR BARNABASES - One Bread, One Body, 4/10/2018

OUR NEED FOR BARNABASES

"There was a certain Levite from Cyprus named Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (meaning 'son of encouragement'). He sold a farm that he owned and made a donation of the money, laying it at the apostles' feet." -Acts 4:36-37

To witness powerfully "to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 4:33), we need people like Mary who will continue steadfastly praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14). We also need faithful people like Matthias to replace unfaithful leaders like Judas. To proclaim effectively the Good News of the risen Christ, we need repentant preachers like Peter, martyrs like Stephen, and missionaries like Paul. We greatly need self-sacrificing, generous, zealous sons and daughters of encouragement like Barnabas (Acts 4:36).

People like St. Barnabas set the tone for the Christian community. God's people, like all people, tend to be selfish, petty, worldly, and begrudging. We look to do the minimum in sacrifice and commitment and get the maximum in pleasure and comfort. Through Barnabases, God's people are pulled out of the swamp of minimalism and mediocrity. We repent so we give rather than take, serve rather than insist on being served, die rather than sin, and sacrifice rather than do our own thing. A church without Barnabases is nauseating to Jesus (Rv 3:16). A church with Barnabases looks like the body and bride of Christ. Be a Barnabas.

Prayer: Father, may zeal for You consume me (Ps 69:10; Jn 2:17).

Promise: "The wind blows where it will. You hear the sound it makes but you do not know where it comes from, or where it goes. So it is with everyone begotten of the Spirit." -Jn 3:8

Praise: Martha's devotion to Mass eventually led her husband to the Church.

OUR ONLY HOPE - One Bread, One Body, 4/9/2018

Monday, April 9, 2018, Annunciation of the Lord

OUR ONLY HOPE

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; hence, the holy Offspring to be born will be called Son of God." -Luke 1:35

Christianity is the only religion which believes that God became man. Some religions would even consider the idea of God's Incarnation blasphemous. Nonetheless, we Christians believe the Incarnation is the only hope for the world.

For example, the greatest religion next to Christianity is Judaism. Jesus chose to be a Jew. The Jewish religion realizes there is a very serious problem with the human race. We need a new heart (Ez 36:26). Judaism has recognized sacrifice as the best solution to humanity's problem. However, "it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take sins away" (Heb 10:4). Thus, Judaism has no solution to the human predicament. It can only hope for the Messiah.

The Incarnation is the greatest event in the history of the human race. Thus, most of the world dates its years from the Incarnation. Catholics have traditionally prayed the "Angelus" at morning, noon, and evening to thank the Lord for the Incarnation. When we pray the rosary, we thank the Lord for His Incarnation as we meditate on the first joyful mystery and pray each of the fifty-three "Hail Marys" of the five-decade rosary. We are preoccupied with the Incarnation because it is our only hope.

We Christians should rejoice in the Incarnation always (see Phil 4:4). When anyone asks us the reason for this hope of ours, we must be ever ready to reply (1 Pt 3:15).

Prayer: Father, I say with Mary: "I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to Your word" (see Lk 1:38).

Promise: "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Immanuel." -Is 7:14

Praise: "Great will be His dignity and He will be called Son of the Most High" (Lk 1:32).

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday AS GOOD A WITNESS AS I WANT TO BE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=4/8/2018

"With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus." -Acts 4:33

Our secular humanistic society hardly notices when we Christians proclaim that Jesus is risen
from the dead. Our message of the Resurrection is effortlessly ignored and often militantly
denied and ridiculed. We clearly lack power as witnesses for the risen Lord.

The Holy Spirit, Who is Power (Lk 24:49; Acts 1:8), will give us the power that we lack. All
we need do is obey Him (Acts 5:32). Traditionally, the Holy Spirit has given us power by
giving communal and economic commands. The Spirit commands us to devote ourselves to the
communal life (Acts 2:42) and to accept His grace to be of one mind and heart (Acts 4:32). He
commands many of us to hold things in common (Acts 4:32; 2:44). He commands not a few of us to
liquidate our property and to give the proceeds to the Church (Acts 4:34ff).

How much do you believe in the risen Christ? How powerful do you want to be as His witness?
Maximum power is available to you. Obey the Spirit and especially His communal and economic
commands.

Prayer: Father, I repent of making excuses for my powerlessness. May I trust You and be
strengthened with every power, in accord with His glorious might (see Col 1:11).

Promise: " 'Peace be with you,' [Jesus] said again. 'As the Father has sent Me, so I send
you.' Then He breathed on them and said: 'Receive the Holy Spirit.' " -Jn 20:21-22

Praise: All praise and honor to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Thank You for pouring down
Your many graces on us.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

GOD'S CALL TO JOY

NOT VICTIMS OF CHANCE

The ... World Day of Prayer for Vocations ... proclaims this good news to us, and in a decisive
manner. We are not victims of chance or swept up in a series of unconnected events; on the
contrary, our life and our presence in this world are the fruit of a divine vocation!

GOD IS WITH US

... The mystery of the Incarnation reminds us that God continually comes to encounter us. He is
God-with-us, who walks along the often dusty paths of our lives. He knows our anxious longing
for love and He calls us to joy.

LISTEN, DISCERN, LIVE

In the diversity and the uniqueness of each and every vocation, personal and ecclesial, there

enabling us to develop our talents, makes us instruments of salvation in the world and guides
us to full happiness.
