ON FIRE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me." -Luke 4:18

Father Al Lauer, founder of One Bread, One Body, considered Luke 4:18 to be his personal mission statement. As he prepared for his ordination to the priesthood, he chose this Scripture verse as his theme. The passage was quoted on his funeral Mass card. Fr. Al was on fire with the Holy Spirit and operated in the gifts of the Holy Spirit throughout his priesthood.
Jesus said: "I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!" (Lk 12:49) Jesus came to baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Mk 1:8). On Easter, He told His disciples, "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22). After Jesus ascended, the gifts of the Spirit were poured out on us all (Eph 4:11; Acts 2:17) and the Church was born.
At Baptism, you received "the power to live and act under the prompting of the Holy Spirit through the gifts of the Holy Spirit" (Catechism, 1266; see also Mk 1:8). Yet the world, the devil, and our flesh constantly fight against the Holy Spirit for control of our lives (Gal 5:17). Therefore, "I remind you to stir into flame" the Holy Spirit in your lives (2 Tm 1:6-7).
Fr. Al once told me: "The more I say 'No' to myself, the more I say 'Yes' to the Holy Spirit." In that spirit, repent immediately of all sin. Deny yourself and take up your daily cross (Lk 9:23). Be on fire with the Holy Spirit, living so as to never stifle or sadden the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19; Eph 4:30). "Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's lead" (Gal 5:25).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I receive a double portion of the spirit You gave Your servant, Fr. Al Lauer (2 Kgs 2:9). May I want the Holy Spirit more than I want to take my next breath.

Promise: "Thenceforth we shall be with the Lord unceasingly." -1 Thes 4:17

Praise: Simon received God's power to stop masturbating when he heard another man witness how Jesus had set him free of it.

PM eNewsletter 22nd Sunday in ordinary time

August 30th 22nd Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, seasons change, and we see life changing, but one
thing never changes and that is Your steadfast love for us.

Lord, help us to recognize that, and feel that love.

Lord, help that love give us the graces that we need to live
in true christian faith, faithful to You and Your ordained
leaders.

Lord, help us to trust the wisdom that You give the Pope
and his bishops, and let us grow in the knowledge that
Your Holy Spirit guides Your church in the continued truth.

Lord, let us trust our priests and deacons as emissarys of You.

Lord, help us all to pray for the ordained as they also struggle
with the problems of life as we do.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday HOW TO RECEIVE A GIFT
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/30/2015

"Every worthwhile gift, every genuine benefit comes from above,
descending from the Father." -James 1:17

Our Father wants to give us a "worthwhile gift," a "genuine benefit."
He will give us this gift as He gave us the gifts of birth and rebirth
(see 1 Pt 1:23). The Father will gift us through a word spoken in truth
(Jas 1:18). If we listen to this word (Jas 1:19) and act on it
(Jas 1:22), we will receive our gift.

For example, the Father may want to give you the gift of health. He may
give you this gift by speaking a word, such as: "Repent!" Possibly some
patterns in your life are sinful and are hurting your health. If you
listen to this word, you are on your way to receiving the gift of health.
You must "strip away all that is filthy, every vicious excess"
(Jas 1:21). These things obstruct your spiritual hearing. Then you will
hear God's call to repent. Finally, if you act on this word by going to
Confession and accepting God's grace to repent, you will have received
God's gift of health.

This is only one example. It helps us see how God gives gifts through
words to which we must listen and act on. What gifts does your Father
want to give you? What words have "taken root in you?" (Jas 1:21) Are
you "quick to hear" (Jas 1:19)? Are you humbly welcoming these words?
(Jn 1:21) Are you acting on this word, or deceiving yourself? (Jas 1:22)
Receive God's gifts!

Prayer: Father, let me receive so many of your gifts that people ask me
about them. May I then tell them about Your love.

Promise: "What great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the
Lord, our God, is to us whenever we call upon Him?" -Dt 4:7

Praise: "God freed Him from death's bitter pangs, however, and raised
Him up again, for it was impossible that death should keep its hold on
Him" (Acts 2:24). Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2015-05.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

HOLY YEAR OF MERCY

"JOYFUL CALL"

The time has come for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy
once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses
and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Mercy is the force that
reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the
future with hope.

"ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL"

It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her
message that she herself live and testify to mercy. Her language and her
gestures must transmit mercy, so as to touch the hearts of all people
and inspire them ... to find the road that leads to the Father.

THE FATHER'S MERCY

Merciful like the Father ... is the "motto" of this Holy Year. In mercy,
we find proof of how God loves us... Day after day, touched by His
compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others.

THE SLAVE TRADE? - One Bread, One Body, 8/29/2015

Saturday, August 29, 2015, Beheading of, St. John the Baptizer

THE SLAVE TRADE?

"He called in his servants and handed his funds over to them according to each man's abilities." -Matthew 25:14

Today's Gospel reading is often used to bring up the theme of stewardship, which is supposedly giving our "time, treasures, and talents" to the Lord and His Church. This is a rather tame idea of stewardship compared to the Biblical concept.
First of all, today's Gospel reading is about three slaves, not servants. ("Servants" is a watered-down translation.) Slaves don't just give their time, treasure, and talents to their owners; they give their whole lives and give up their freedom as well.
Moreover, if you don't participate in your parish's stewardship program, should you be thrown into the darkness outside where you can wail and grind your teeth? (Mt 25:30) That would seem excessive, but it makes more sense in the Biblical context of slavery, total commitment, and abandonment of our wills to God.
Maybe we should have "Slavery Sunday" instead of "Stewardship Sunday." "You are the slaves of the one you obey, whether yours is the slavery of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to justice" (Rm 6:16). "Be slaves of Christ the Lord" (Col 3:24).

Prayer: Father, I will serve You with abandon and not be duped into slavery to the world.

Promise: "We exhort you to even greater progress." -1 Thes 4:10

Praise: St. John the Baptizer was such a powerful preacher that King Herod feared him even when he was in prison (Mk 6:20).

(For a related teaching, order our tape Jesus, the Redeemer" on audio AV 50-3 or video V-50.)

YOU'RE FIRED - One Bread, One Body, 8/28/2015

Friday, August 28, 2015, St. Augustine

1 Thessalonians 4:1-8, Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 10-12, Matthew 25:1-13
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082815.cfm

YOU'RE FIRED

"The foolish ones said to the sensible, 'Give us some of your oil. Our torches are going out.' But the sensible ones replied, 'No.' " -Matthew 25:8-9

Some things cannot be shared, no matter how much we might wish to share them. If a man has worked for years to reach peak physical condition, he cannot bestow his strength and endurance on someone else who asks for it. He can share his exercise regimen and dietary plan with another, but he cannot pass on his discipline and commitment to get in shape. That prime physical condition can only be attained through time and effort.
Jesus refers to this situation in the parable of the ten virgins. The wise virgins used their time to grow in faith and develop their spiritual gifts. They were "set aflame and burning bright" (Jn 5:35). The foolish ones squandered their time and did not mature sufficiently to keep their flame of faith burning brightly.
You must develop your own relationship with Jesus. You must cultivate it through an investment in prayer, Bible study, frequent Mass attendance, etc. If you haven't developed your relationship with Jesus, start today. "Now is the acceptable time" (2 Cor 6:2). Jesus never rejects anyone who comes to Him (Jn 6:37). He can bring you a long way spiritually in a short time if you're sincere in seeking Him (see Jn 6:21; Lk 19:1-10; 23:40-43). Nonetheless, God loves to work with you on a daily basis (see Acts 17:11; Mt 6:11; Ex 16:4). Seek Jesus daily in sincerity of heart. He will give you a solid faith that won't burn out.

Prayer: Father, You are the God Who answers by fire (1 Kgs 18:24). Send Your Holy Spirit to keep me aflame for You daily.

Promise: "It is God's will that you grow in holiness." -1 Thes 4:3

Praise: St. Augustine vigorously preached and wrote against the errors that had nearly led him to hell.

PREP SCHOOL - One Bread, One Body, 8/27/2015

Thursday, August 27, 2015, St. Monica

1 Thessalonians 3:7-13, Psalm 90:3-5, 12-14, 17, Matthew 24:42-51

PREP SCHOOL

"You must be prepared in the same way." -Matthew 24:44

Since we "cannot know the Day [Jesus] is coming" (Mt 24:42), we must prepare to be ready to meet Him today and "settle with" Him (Mt 24:51). The Corinthians showed their preparedness by waiting "for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Cor 1:7). We must also be prepared for the possibility that He might come back in a short time, for example, in a year. This means we must spread the Word of God with urgency just as did St. Paul and the apostles (1 Cor 7:29, 31; Acts 6:4). The salvation of millions is riding on our preparedness.
We must also be prepared for the possibility that Jesus might not return in our lifetime. We must prepare to be faithful and diligent over the long haul, to persevere, suffer, and pray without losing heart (Lk 18:1). We must prepare ourselves, for we will be called to work "a full day in the scorching heat" (Mt 20:12), and then return day after day, year after year to work for Jesus. The solidity of the Church is riding on our constant preparedness.
Work faithfully until the Master returns, whether that is soon or far off (Mt 24:46). "Stay awake, therefore!" (Mt 24:42) Prepare to be prepared.

Prayer: Lord God, You have generously given me so much revelation and warning. May I lovingly spend my life preparing Your way in the wilderness of this world (Mt 3:3).

Promise: "May the Lord increase you and make you overflow with love for one another and for all." -1 Thes 3:12

Praise: St. Monica worked at her son's conversion by suffering, visiting, introducing him to good Christians, and "praying always and not losing heart" (Lk 18:1).

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

OUR ONLY WORTHINESS - One Bread, One Body, 8/26/2015

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13, Psalm 139:7-12, Matthew 23:27-32
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082615.cfm

OUR ONLY WORTHINESS

"Make your lives worthy of the God Who calls you to His kingship and glory." -1 Thessalonians 2:12

"Lead a life worthy of the Lord and pleasing to Him in every way" (Col 1:10). "Conduct yourselves, then, in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ" (Phil 1:27). "Live a life worthy of the calling you have received" (Eph 4:1). The Lord commands us to lead lives worthy of Him, the Gospel, and our calling. Will the Lord be able to declare the end of this day and the end of our lives "worthy"?
Before receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, we admit: "Lord, I am not worthy to receive You." We are not worthy to receive God or worthy of God. How can we be worthy? In heaven, they sing: "Worthy are You to receive the scroll and break open its seals, for You were slain" (Rv 5:9). They all cry out: "Worthy is the Lamb That was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and praise!" (Rv 5:12) Jesus alone is worthy, and we have been baptized into Him (Rm 6:3). In Jesus, we are worthy. In Jesus, our lives are worthy of God, the Gospel, our calling, and eternal life. So we sing forever: "Worthy is the Lamb!"

Prayer: Jesus, my only Worthiness, I praise You forever!

Promise: "That is why we thank God constantly that in receiving His message from us you took it, not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God at work within you who believe." -1 Thes 2:13

Praise: Stephen adjusts his work schedule so that daily Mass and weekly eucharistic adoration are not neglected.

(To grow in His worthiness, read the Bible daily. Pray about ordering any or all of these audio or video tapes: "Ignorance of Scriptures is Ignorance of Christ", AV 82-1, V-82, "How to Pray the Bible" on audio AV 82-3 or on video V-82, "How to Read the Bible" on audio AV 46-3 or on video V-46, "Principles of Bible Interpretation", audio AV 79-1, video V-79, "Biblical Counseling" on audio AV 13A-1, AV 13A-3, AV 13B-1 or video starting with V-13A.)

A MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH - One Bread, One Body, 8/25/2015

Tuesday, August 25, 2015, St. Louis, St. Joseph Calasanz

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8, Psalm 139:1-6, Matthew 23:23-26
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082515.cfm

A MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH

"The exhortation we deliver does not spring from deceit or impure motives." -1 Thessalonians 2:3

The Lord, being all-knowing, "sees right through us." "Nothing is concealed from Him; all lies bare and exposed to the eyes of Him to Whom we must render an account" (Heb 4:13). He sees not only our secret thoughts (see Heb 4:12) but also our motives (see 1 Cor 4:5).
The Lord is very concerned about our motives being pure (see 1 Thes 2:3). He insists that we give our lives purely, exclusively, completely, and wholeheartedly to Him. "The eyes of the Lord roam over the whole earth, to encourage those who are devoted to Him wholeheartedly" (2 Chr 16:9). The Lord has always loved us unconditionally, and He also insists on being loved unconditionally. Throughout our lives, the Lord repeatedly orchestrates events so that we will have no reason to love Him except to love Him for Himself. The Lord will even deprive and test us as He did Job to show us whether we love Him for Himself or merely for the things He does and the blessings He gives. The Lord goes to great lengths to purify our motives. This is one of the main reasons He gives us daily crosses.
Repent, let the Lord purify your motives, and avoid going to hell. Then repent even more deeply, let the Lord purify your motives even more, and go to heaven, preferably without going to purgatory.

Prayer: Father, may loving You be my reason for living.

Promise: "So well disposed were we to you, in fact, that we wanted to share with you not only God's tidings but our very lives, so dear had you become to us." -1 Thes 2:8

Praise: St. Louis, king of France, especially delighted in serving the blind. He wished to keep his deeds of mercy secret (Mt 6:4), and the blind were unable to recognize that he was a king.

(For a related teaching, order our tape "Purification / Presentation / Illumination" on audio AV 89-1 or video V-89.)

THE FIG TREE - One Bread, One Body, 8/24/2015

Monday, August 24, 2015, St. Bartholomew

Revelation 21:9-14, Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18, John 1:45-51
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082415.cfm

THE FIG TREE

"Jesus responded: 'Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than that.' " -John 1:50

St. Bartholomew (Nathanael) was prejudiced against Jesus because Jesus came from Nazareth (Jn 1:46). After Jesus mentioned He saw Nathanael under the fig tree, however, Nathanael changed completely, from prejudice to faith. He acknowledged Jesus as "the Son of God" and "the King of Israel" (Jn 1:49). Why was Nathanael so impressed by Jesus' remark that He saw him under the fig tree? What was Nathanael doing under the fig tree?
No one knows why the fig tree was so significant to Nathanael. Some Bible commentators mention that the fig tree is symbolic of the Israelite nation (see Mk 11:12ff). Thus Jesus' reference to the fig tree would have special symbolic significance.
Others see Jesus using the supernatural gift of knowledge, as He did with the Samaritan woman at the well (Jn 4:18). Jesus could have been noting a secret sin Nathanael committed under the fig tree (see 1 Cor 14:24-25).
Another possible interpretation is that Nathanael was praying under the fig tree, praying for the coming of the Messiah. Jesus presented Himself as the immediate Answer to Nathanael's prayer.
On this special feast day, let the Lord speak to you symbolically, prophetically, and prayerfully. You'll never be the same.

Prayer: Father, may I hear You say a word today that changes my heart.

Promise: "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth." -Ps 145:18

Praise: St. Bartholomew believed Jesus and Jesus promised him great things.

(For related teaching, order our leaflet, Seek Prophecy", or our tape on audio AV 14A-1, AV 14A-3, AV 14B-1 or video V-14A, V-14B.)

PM eNewsletter 21st Sunday in ordinary time

August 23rd Twenty first Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, life moves with a speed that differs for all people.

Sometimes we have a lot of time on our hands, and
sometimes we can't believe how fast time is going by.

But in all this, we forget to pray as we should.

Lord, help us to see the importance of prayer, especially
before Your Body and Blood--the Eucharist.

Lord, help us to faithfully set a time each week to come
and adore You and feel the peace that only You can give.

Help us to intercede for the church and all of it's leaders.

Help us to sit in awe of Your love.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "A LIFE OF FAITH" (Gal 2:20)
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/23/2015

"Does it shake your faith?" -John 6:61

When Jesus talks about His eucharistic presence, people exclaim: "This
sort of talk is hard to endure! How can anyone take it seriously?"
(Jn 6:60) However, Jesus refuses to re-phrase the revelation of His
eucharistic presence. He insists that the issue is not His words but
our faith in His words (see Jn 6:61). He challenges us not to think
about His words merely with our human capabilities, for "the flesh is
useless" (Jn 6:63) and His words "are spirit and life" (Jn 6:63).

Faith in Jesus' eucharistic presence is a matter of hearing God's Word
in the light of the Spirit, for faith comes through hearing and hearing
through the Word of God (Rm 10:17). Thus, Peter responded to Jesus'
challenge to believe by saying: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have
the words of eternal life" (Jn 6:68). We believe in Jesus' eucharistic
presence because we have faith in what we have heard (see Gal 3:5) and
in Jesus Who is speaking.

When we walk by God's Word and not by sight, then we walk by faith
(see 2 Cor 5:7). If we walk by sight, we walk away from Jesus
(see Jn 6:66). If we walk by faith, we walk with Jesus. Don't live by
what you see but by faith in Jesus, the Word.

Prayer: Father, my sight makes me susceptible to optical illusions. By
Your Word, protect me from being deceived.

Promise: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." -Jos 24:15

Praise: Alleluia! The tomb is empty! The stone is rolled away! Jesus is
risen! Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

HOLY YEAR OF MERCY

ECHO GOD

... May the Church echo the word of God that resounds strong and clear
as a message and sign of pardon, strength, aid and love. May she never
tire of extending mercy and be ever patient in offering compassion and
comfort. May the Church become the voice of every man and woman, and
repeat confidently without end: "Be mindful of Your mercy, O Lord, and
Your steadfast love, for they have been from of old" (Ps 25:6).

"A SPECIAL TIME"

I have proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time
for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow
stronger and more effective.

"STEEPED IN MERCY"

How much I desire that the year [December 8, 2015 - November 20, 2016]
to come will be steeped in mercy, so that we can go out to every man
and woman, bring the goodness and tenderness of God! May the balm of
mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign
that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst!

"A LIFE OF FAITH" (Gal 2:20)

"Does it shake your faith?" -John 6:61

When Jesus talks about His eucharistic presence, people exclaim: "This sort of talk is hard to endure! How can anyone take it seriously?" (Jn 6:60) However, Jesus refuses to re-phrase the revelation of His eucharistic presence. He insists that the issue is not His words but our faith in His words (see Jn 6:61). Faith in Jesus' eucharistic presence is a matter of hearing God's Word in the light of the Spirit, for faith comes through hearing and hearing through the Word of God (Rm 10:17). Thus, Peter responded to Jesus' challenge to believe by saying: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (Jn 6:68). We believe in Jesus' eucharistic presence because we have faith in what we have heard (see Gal 3:5) and in Jesus Who is speaking.

HOW TO MAKE HUMBLE PIE

"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." -Matthew 23:12

Jesus criticized some religious leaders for being proud. Pride was the reason for some of them being spiritually blind, fools, and hypocrites (see Mt 23:13, 17). Therefore, Jesus called them to humble themselves, and He calls us to do the same (Mt 23:12). Jesus "humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!" (Phil 2:8) Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, wants to make our hearts like His (Mt 11:29). He wants "a people humble and lowly" (Zep 3:12). The Lord commands us: "In your relations with one another, clothe yourselves with humility, because God 'is stern with the arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness.' Bow humbly under God's mighty hand, so that in due time He may lift you high" (1 Pt 5:5-6).
To clothe ourselves in humility, we should:
* carry our daily crosses (Lk 9:23),
* choose the lowest place (Lk 14:10),
* bend our knees and lives at the name of Jesus (see Phil 2:10),
* repent and confess our sins to one another, especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (see Jas 5:16),
* tremble as we read God's Word (Is 66:2),
* forgive and apologize,
* be "quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger" (Jas 1:19),
* be submissive to others (Eph 5:21), and
* come to serve (Mt 20:28).

In His Church and its Word, especially in the Bible, the Lord has given us many more ways to humble ourselves. Look for them and do them. Clothe yourself in humility.

Prayer: Father, You have given me the command and the grace to be humble. I choose humility.

Promise: "Blessed are you who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways!" -Ps 128:1, our transl.

Praise: Mary said: "Let it be done unto me," and became a model for all future Christians.

RUTH, DEATH, AND BAPTISM

"Both Mahlon and Chilion died also, and the woman was left with neither her two sons nor her husband." -Ruth 1:5

Ruth's husband, father-in-law, and brother-in-law had died. All of these men had moved to Moab to escape death from starvation (Ru 1:1), but they only delayed death for ten years (Ru 1:4).
Ruth swallowed up death in victory (1 Cor 15:54) by her faithfulness to Naomi in obedience to God. She reversed the march of death by marrying Boaz, giving birth to Obed, and becoming the great grandmother of David (Ru 4:22). It was from David's family that Jesus came. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25), the Conqueror of death.
How can we bring down the reign of death? We conquer death by being baptized into Jesus. In this way, we enter into the family of the living God, the Creator and Sustainer of life, and the Victor over death. We live our new life in baptism by faithful obedience to the Lord.
Ruth prefigures our baptismal victory over death. We defeat death by entering Jesus' family and living a new life of faithfulness and obedience to Him.

Prayer: Father, make me increasingly aware of being baptized into Jesus (Rm 6:3).

Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind." -Mt 22:37

Praise: Pope St. Pius X's greatest accomplishment was the promotion of the Eucharist.

THE ULTIMATE POWER OF HUMAN SACRIFICE

"Whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites shall belong to the Lord. I shall offer him up as a holocaust." -Judges 11:31

In our secular humanistic society, we are rather ignorant concerning spiritual power. Many ancient peoples were in some ways more advanced than we are in regard to spiritual realities. Jephthah knew what few people in our society realize: that there was exceptional power in taking a vow to offer a human sacrifice (see Jgs 11:30-31). When he took this vow, he defeated the Ammonites in war. Moreover, when the king of Moab sacrificed his first-born son, he was spared a certain defeat in war (2 Kgs 3:27). Abraham could understand much better than we do the rationale behind God's command to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham's son (see Gn 22:2). The prophet Micah indicated his awareness of the power of human sacrifice when he prophesies: "Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriad streams of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my crime, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?" (Mi 6:7) Satanists and abortionists also recognize the power of human sacrifice. However, to offer human sacrifice is a grave sin, an abomination. Does this mean that we are condemned to either powerlessness or sinfulness? No, the Lord has done the impossible when He sacrificed Himself on Calvary in perfect sinlessness to expiate the sins of all people throughout all time.
Praise Jesus, God and Man, Priest and Sacrifice, Savior and Lord!

Prayer: Father, may I center my life on the Eucharist, where the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary is made present.

Promise: "Happy the man who makes the Lord his trust." -Ps 40:5

Praise: St. Bernard, even at an early age, was exceptional in his piety, thanks to the example of his pious parents.

SACRIFICIAL LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 8/19/2015

Wednesday, August 19, 2015, St. John Eudes

Judges 9:6-15, Psalm 21:2-7, Matthew 20:1-16
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/081915.cfm

SACRIFICIAL LOVE

"Must I give up...?" -Judges 9:9, 11, 13

In Jotham's story, three trees were asked to lead the other trees (Jgs 9:8ff). All three trees declined to serve because they would have had to give up what was most precious about themselves. Jotham's story teaches us that:
* Love, leadership, and service mean sacrifice.
* The Lord calls us to sacrifice not only little things but the most important aspects of our lives - indeed, our very selves.
* A refusal to sacrifice hurts others greatly and will eventually destroy us. "Whoever would save his life will lose it" (Lk 9:24).

Jesus was asked to become the King of kings and rule over us trees and the world. Jesus accepted His Father's will and gave up His life for love of us. His sacrifice on Calvary brought salvation to the world headed for destruction.
Therefore, through Jesus, "let us continually offer God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips which acknowledge His name. Do not neglect good deeds and generosity; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind" (Heb 13:15-16). By offering your participation in the Mass as often as possible, unite your life of sacrifice to Jesus' ultimate sacrifice on Calvary. "I beg you through the mercy of God to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God" (Rm 12:1).

Prayer: Father, may I consider it a privilege to sacrifice my life for love of You and Your people.

Promise: "Thus the last shall be first and the first shall be last." -Mt 20:16

Praise: In his day, St. John was considered as the preacher most able to touch the hearts of his listeners. He also was instrumental in spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by providing a solid doctrinal basis for it.

GIDEON AND MIDIAN - One Bread, One Body, 8/18/2015

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

Judges 6:11-24, Psalm 85:9, 11-14, Matthew 19:23-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/081815.cfm

GIDEON AND MIDIAN

"The last shall come first." -Matthew 19:30

The Israelites were oppressed externally by the nation of Midian, and internally by their own idolatry. Joash the Abiezrite, father of Gideon, had built an altar to an idol (Jgs 6:25), as well as a sacred pole used in idol worship. God called the fearful Gideon to deliver Israel from Midianite oppression (Jgs 6:14).
When Gideon assembled a large army, God told him, "You have too many soldiers with you for Me to deliver Midian into [your] power" (Jgs 7:2). So God told Gideon to send the fearful men home, which reduced the army to 31% of its original force. God said: "There are still too many soldiers" (Jgs 7:4). Then God devised a test to show which of those who were not afraid would be alert, ready, and prepared for battle (Jgs 7:5; cp Mt 25:1-13). After this test, less than 1% of the original soldiers remained. It was through these three-hundred lowly, obedient Israelites that God received glory when He delivered Israel through Gideon. God chooses the weak, "insignificant" (Jgs 6:15), and lowly so that He will receive glory (see Ex 14:18). The last come first (Mt 19:30).
The victorious Gideon refused to grab the glory from the Lord. He instead told the people to subject themselves to the Lord instead of their former idols, saying: "The Lord must rule over you" (Jgs 8:23). God doesn't need multitudes to be victorious. What He wants is spirit-filled servants who abandon themselves to Him (Jgs 6:34) and leaders who put His will above all else (Jgs 6:25ff; Mt 19:29).

Prayer: Lord, I want to be a "champion" for You (Jgs 6:12).

Promise: "For man it is impossible; but for God all things are possible." -Mt 19:26

Praise: Confessing an attitude of cynicism harbored toward a certain group of people, Edith was led to minister love and hospitality to those very people shortly after her Confession.

REBELLIOUS OBEDIENCE? - One Bread, One Body, 8/17/2015

Monday, August 17, 2015

REBELLIOUS OBEDIENCE?

"If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." -Matthew 19:17

All people, including atheists, do what God wants much of the time, but that doesn't mean all people obey God. Even the most rebellious children often do what their parents want, but that doesn't mean they're obeying their parents. Doing the right thing because it benefits us is different than doing the right thing in obedience to the Lord.
The Israelites at the time of the Judges did what God wanted, but didn't have hearts for obedience. They proved this by their relapse into wicked conduct after each of the judges died (see Jgs 2:19). Similarly, the man in today's Gospel reading told Jesus that he had kept the commandments (Mt 19:20). However, he did not have a heart for obedience. This explains why he refused to obey Jesus' command to go, sell his possessions, and give to the poor (Mt 19:21-22).
Are you obeying God or just finding your self-will intersecting with God's will on some occasions? Is your "obedience" circumstantial, that is, depending on who's there and what's the command? Do you have a heart for obedience, a heart for God?

Prayer: Father, may I obey You because I love You (see Jn 15:10).

Promise: "You will then have treasure in heaven. Afterward, come back and follow Me." -Mt 19:21

Praise: After confessing resentment toward her husband, Judy felt God's presence in a new way and she looked for ways to greater serve her spouse's needs.

PM eNewsletter 20th Sunday in ordinary time

August 16th 20th Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church celebrates the queenship of Mary,
as she so rightly deserves.

She was a faithful servant, and a tremendous example of trust
while on earth, and so she should be honored as Queen of
heaven and earth.

of us.

Let Your love for mom flow also into us, and let us praise,
and glorify You as our Lord, God and King.

Let us see that Your plan of love is constantly working out
in everything, and give us the graces necessary for us to
really trust You every day in every way.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "ALL WERE FILLED WITHTHE HOLY SPIRIT" (Acts 2:4)
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/16/2015

"Be filled with the Spirit." -Ephesians 5:18

At our Baptisms, we became the temples of the Holy Spirit. The Lord
wants us to be filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18; see also Acts 2:4).
Paul taught that those filled with the Holy Spirit do the following
four things. They:

address "one another in psalms and hymns and inspired songs" (Eph 5:19),

"sing praise to the Lord" (Eph 5:19) in their hearts,

"give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ" (Eph 5:20), and

"submit to one another out of fear of the Lord" (Eph 5:21, our transl).

Those filled with the Holy Spirit have set their hearts on higher realms
(Col 3:1). In spirit, they inhabit the throne room of God. They have
entered "His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise" (Ps 100:4).
Those filled with the Spirit upbuild, encourage, and submit to those
around them. They can love their neighbor in this way because they love
themselves (Lk 10:27). They love themselves because the Holy Spirit cries
out in their hearts "Abba!" ("Father") (Gal 4:6) Secure in their Father's
love, those filled with the Spirit are a people of praise, thanksgiving,
submission, and love. Accept the grace to be filled and stay filled with
the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: "To the One seated on the throne, and to the Lamb, be praise and
honor, glory and might, forever and ever!" (Rv 5:13)

Promise: "I Myself am the living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone
eats this Bread he shall live forever; the Bread I will give is My flesh,
for the life of the world." -Jn 6:51

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who baptizes us and fills us with the
Holy Spirit! (Mk 1:8)

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

HOLY YEAR OF MERCY

THE FATHER'S MERCY

Merciful like the Father ... is the "motto" of this Holy Year. In mercy,
we find proof of how God loves us... Day after day, touched by His
compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others.

"BURNING DESIRE"

It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people
may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a
way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of
poverty.

TURN TO MARY

...Mary attests that the mercy of the Son of God knows no bounds and
extends to everyone, without exception. Let us address her in the words
of the Salve Regina ... so that she may never tire of turning her
merciful eyes upon us, and make us worthy to contemplate the face of
mercy, her Son Jesus.
