ODD MAN OUT

As Jesus "was walking along the Sea of Galilee He watched two brothers, Simon now known as Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea." -Matthew 4:18

When Jesus called His first apostles, He started with the quartet of Peter, Andrew, James, and John (Mt 4:18, 21). In fact, Andrew was initially the leader who introduced Peter to Jesus (Jn 1:40-41). We see this quartet together in other parts of the Gospels (e.g. Mk 13:3). However, for some reason Andrew was no longer included in the privileged group. Only Peter, James, and John accompanied Jesus to the Transfiguration, the raising of the daughter of Jairus, and the agony in the garden. The quartet became a trio, and Andrew was out.

Although this was God's will, Andrew may have struggled with feeling excluded. We may have the same problem in being left out of some activity, ministry, or community. Even if this is God's will, we are tempted to feel jealous, resentful, or unforgiving. However, if we don't get upset about being left out of some things, we will not be left out of the most important things, such as God's grace, love, and eternal life.

We need to be like Andrew and thank the Lord for calling us to serve Him in any way, even if we're left out of some things. Thank You, Lord, for leaving me out. I trust You and am secure in Your love.

Prayer: Father, may I be "out of it" in just the right way.

Promise: "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." -Rm 10:9

Praise: St. Andrew is said to have preached the Word of the Lord as he died, tied to a cross.

THE WOOD OF DEATH LEADS TO LIFE - One Bread, One Body, 11/29/2016

THE WOOD OF DEATH LEADS TO LIFE

"A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse." -Isaiah 11:1

A stump is what is left over from what was formerly a living, thriving tree. But the tree was either cut down or died and fell over. All that remains is a stump, which is the wood of death. In the world of forestry, however, some trees are known as "stump-sprouters." These trees, such as the American chestnut, actually sprout from their stumps. For these trees, new life sprouts from the wood of death.

Jesus was "nailed to a tree," the cross. Crucified, Jesus died in agony upon the cross, the wood of death. But Jesus, the Shoot, sprouted from the wood of death, the stump of the cross. He rose from the dead and is risen in glory with the Father in heaven.

The world looks at many situations and sees stumps. These "dead" situations may be a ruined marriage, a town ravaged by a natural disaster, a drug-addicted person, or a neighborhood riddled with violence and poverty. In the eyes of the world, these situations are dead. In the eyes of faith, Christians look at the same things and see the seedground for the shoots of new life rising from the dead in Jesus. "To Him be glory forever" (Rm 11:36). "Death is swallowed up in victory" (1 Cor 15:54).

Prayer: Father, give me eyes of faith to wait in the joyful hope of Your life, not in the gloom of darkness and death (see Is 9:1ff).

Promise: "Blest are the eyes that see what you see." -Lk 10:23

Praise: It seemed that Pedro and Maria's marriage was dead, but by the grace of God it was saved. Now they pray together daily.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?

"The fruit of the earth will be honor...when the Lord...purges Jerusalem's blood from her midst." -Isaiah 4:2, 4

As we begin Advent, the Church presents us with a series of mind-boggling prophecies from the prophet Isaiah. These prophecies paint a picture of restoration more glorious than anything we could ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20), a restoration fashioned by the coming Messiah, the Branch of the Lord (Is 4:2).

As this is being written, Jerusalem is bloody with the aftermath of a series of suicide bombers in the marketplaces and terror in its homes. Yet the Lord, through the Messiah, wants to purge "Jerusalem's blood from her midst" (Is 4:4). He wants to so transform Jerusalem that "instruction, and the word of the Lord" will go forth from her instead of conflict (Is 2:3). Isaiah proclaims a Messiah so powerful that He can cause Israel and the Palestinians to cash in their weapons to buy seed and tractors, since they no longer have interest in fighting each other over the land (Is 2:4).

Jesus, the Messiah, has awesome power. He has fantastic plans for good (see Jer 29:11), plans which include us (Heb 11:40). Nearly everyone missed the Messiah's first Christmas coming, even after centuries of announcements from Isaiah and other prophets. Now the Church in her Advent readings tells us to get ready for Jesus' coming this Christmas. Will we, disbelieving, shrug off the fantastic prophecies as too good to be true and miss His coming again? Jesus is looking for faith (see Mt 8:10) - in Him and in His promises. This Christmas, when Jesus "comes, will He find any faith on the earth?" (Lk 18:8)

Prayer: "Lord, I am not worthy to receive You. Speak but the word and my soul shall be healed" (see Mt 8:8).

Promise: "His glory will be shelter and protection." -Is 4:6

Praise: James gets up early to go to daily Mass before he goes to work.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "MARY" ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=11/27/2016

"Let us live honorably as in daylight; not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual excess and
lust, not in quarreling and jealousy." -Romans 13:13

Happy new Church year! Happy Advent! Today, we begin to prepare for Christ's Christmas coming. We
believe that Christmas is not just a memory but a reality. We believe that Jesus comes to us and
is born in our lives in a real way each Christmas. Since Christmas is a spiritual birth, Advent
is a spiritual pregnancy. Since Christmas is realizing not any birth, but Christ's birth, Advent
is not just a spiritual pregnancy, but a Marian pregnancy.

We know only three things about Mary's pregnancy. At its beginning, Mary traveled to visit her
relative Elizabeth. This was a difficult visit because of her physical suffering as a newly
pregnant woman hastening on foot into the hill country (Lk 1:39) and also because of the risk she
took. If Elizabeth would have considered Mary an adulteress, Mary could have been killed.
Nevertheless, Mary went on this difficult visit, and Elizabeth and her baby, John, were filled
with the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:41).

At the end of her pregnancy, Mary endured another difficult journey. In submission to the Roman
government, she went to Bethlehem with Joseph to register in the census (Lk 2:4-5). Mary again
underwent what her Son would later call the "cross." Finally, just before Mary gave birth, she
was refused a place to stay and had to give birth in a stable (see Lk 2:7).

To have a real Christmas and not a spiritual miscarriage, we must take up at least the three
crosses which Mary bore - the crosses of self-sacrifice, submission, and forgiveness. "Mary"
Christmas is for those who have a "Mary" Advent.

Prayer: Father, may I "put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the desires of
the flesh" (Rm 13:14).

Promise: "All nations shall stream toward it; many peoples shall come and say: 'Come, let us
climb the Lord's mountain.' "-Is 2:2-3

Praise: Praise you, Jesus, "my Lord and my God!" (Jn 20:28)

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THANKFULNESS AND GRATITUDE

LEARNING FROM THE SCORNED

Significantly, Naaman and the Samaritans were two foreigners. How many foreigners, including
people of other religions, give us an example of values that we sometimes forget or put
aside! Those living beside us, who may be scorned and sidelined because they are foreigners,
can instead teach us how to walk on the path that the Lord wishes.

FAITH OVERCOMES DIFFICULTIES

The Mother of God, together with Joseph her spouse, knew what it was to live far from home.
She too was long a foreigner in Egypt, far from her relatives and friends. Yet her faith was
able to overcome the difficulties. Let us cling to this simple faith of the Holy Mother of
God; let us ask her that we may always come back to Jesus and express our thanks for the many
benefits we have received from His mercy.

THANKSGIVING IS IMPORTANT

To be able to offer thanks, to be able to praise the Lord for what He has done for us: this
is important!

"MARY" ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS

"Let us live honorably as in daylight; not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual excess and lust, not in quarreling and jealousy." -Romans 13:13

Happy new Church year! Happy Advent! Today, we begin to prepare for Christ's Christmas coming. We believe that Christmas is not just a memory but a reality. GOOD SPIRITUAL SHAPE

"Be on guard lest your spirits become bloated with indulgence and drunkenness and worldly cares." -Luke 21:34

Not only can our bodies become fat and bloated but even more so can our spirits. In this condition, we cannot protect ourselves from Satan or prepare ourselves for Jesus' final coming. Because we are not in good spiritual shape, the Lord has delayed His coming and the end of the world (see 2 Pt 3:9).

The Lord has given us an extension to get in good spiritual condition. "Train yourself for the life of piety, for while physical training is to some extent valuable, the discipline of religion is incalculably more so, with its promise of life here and hereafter" (1 Tm 4:7-8). St. Paul declared: "What I do is discipline my own body and master it, for fear that after having preached to others I myself should be rejected" (1 Cor 9:27). Jesus will meet us in the air (1 Thes 4:17). Are you in any condition to fly?

"Since everything is to be destroyed in this way, what sort of men must you not be! How holy in your conduct and devotion, looking for the coming of the day of God and trying to hasten it!" (2 Pt 3:11-12) On this last day of the Church year, let's repent of all our selfish indulgence and worldliness, and make a clean break with the world, the flesh, and the devil. "If by the Spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live" (Rm 8:13). Let's make a new beginning this Advent season. Let's live both a life and a lifestyle in the Spirit and prepare not only for Jesus' Christmas coming but also His final coming. Jesus says: "Remember, I am coming soon!" (Rv 22:7)

Prayer: Holy Spirit, get me in good shape. Through repentance and healing, may I lose the weight of sin, hurt, and resentment. May I build up the muscles of faith, hope, and love.

Promise: "They shall see Him face to face and bear His name on their foreheads." -Rv 22:4

Praise: Larry now receives the Eucharist daily.

BY THE BOOK - One Bread, One Body, 11/25/2016

Revelation 20:1-4, 11-21:2, Psalm 84:3-6, 8, Luke 21:29-33

BY THE BOOK

"The book of the living was opened. The dead were judged according to their conduct as recorded on the scrolls." -Revelation 20:12

At the Last Judgment, the Lord is seated on "a large white throne" (Rv 20:11). You are standing before His throne as He opens "the book of the living" (Rv 20:12). You hope the Lord will find your name in this book, for "anyone whose name was not found inscribed in the book of the living was hurled into [the] pool of fire" (Rv 20:15).

As you wait, you remember what the Lord told Moses: "Him only who has sinned against Me will I strike out of My book" (Ex 32:33). You know all your actions are written down in this book (Ps 139:16), and you remember the many times you have sinned. You begin to fear for your eternal soul.

The record of your conduct is now being read from the book. You stand amazed as God recounts all the tears you have shed (Ps 56:9). An entry in the book states that you have trusted and feared Him (Mal 3:16). However, none of your sins have been read to the heavenly assembly. Jesus shows you the pages containing your deeds, and they are covered with huge blots of black ink. He says: "Each time you repented, I blotted out your sins" (see Ps 51:11). Then Jesus says: "Come, share your Master's joy!" (Mt 25:21)

If you repent (Rv 3:3) and live a life worthy of your calling (Eph 4:1; Rv 3:4), Jesus promises: "I will never erase [your] name from the book of the living, but will acknowledge [you] in the presence of My Father and His angels" (Rv 3:5).

Prayer: Jesus, my Savior, help me to repent of every sin, forgive all who have hurt me, and lead others to receive Your mercy.

Promise: "Know that the reign of God is near." -Lk 21:31

Praise: St. Catherine converted at 14. She renounced the possibility of marriage and abandoned her entire life to the divine will to be one with God.

TURKEY TALK? - One Bread, One Body, 11/24/2016

Thursday, November 24, 2016, St. Andrew Dung-Lac, & the Vietnamese Martyrs

Revelation 18:1-2, 21-23; 19:1-3, 9, Psalm 100:1-5, Luke 21:20-28

TURKEY TALK?

"Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!" -Revelation 18:2

The Scripture readings for today's Eucharist do not seem appropriate for Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.A., especially the reference to "every filthy and disgusting bird" (Rv 18:2). Nevertheless, the Bible here is probably not referring to a turkey, but to the condition of Babylon, which "is a cage for every unclean spirit" (Rv 18:2).

In Revelation, Babylon refers to Rome. Today, it possibly refers to the anti-Christian system of secular humanism. The Lord is telling us to break all ties with Babylon. Otherwise, we will be led astray by her sorcery (Rv 18:23). We must be crucified to the worldly ways of secular humanism (see Gal 6:14). Although we live in the world, the Lord has chosen us out of the world (Jn 15:19). He commands us to "have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords" (1 Jn 2:15). If we are set upon the things of the world, we become enemies of the cross (Phil 3:18-19) and enemies of God (Jas 4:4). We must make no provision for the worldly, carnal influences of secular humanism (see Rm 13:14).

On this Thanksgiving Day, let's reject Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises. Let's reject Babylon, secular humanism, and sin. Let's live for Jesus alone.

Prayer: Father, may I escape from Babylon's cage by giving my life to Your Son, Jesus.

Promise: "When these things begin to happen, stand erect and hold your heads high, for your deliverance is near at hand." -Lk 21:28

Praise: St. Andrew Dung-Lac and Peter Thi were beheaded for being priests. They joyfully accepted their sentence, glad to be judged as worthy of ill-treatment for Jesus (Acts 5:41).

NO COMPROMISE WITH THE SPOILER - One Bread, One Body, 11/23/2016

Wednesday, November 23, 2016, Pope St. Clement I, St. Columban, Bl. Miguel Pro

Revelation 15:1-4, Psalm 98:1-3, 7-9, Luke 21:12-19
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/112316.cfm

NO COMPROMISE WITH THE SPOILER

"On the sea of glass were standing those who had won the victory over the beast and its image, and also the number that signified its name." -Revelation 15:2

Satan does not expect to rally from being defeated by God's angels. He knows he has lost his love for Jesus forever. All Satan can do is play the role of spoiler. He can't get people to love him. All he can do is to try to get people not to love God with all their hearts (see Mt 22:37). Consequently, Satan usually doesn't call people to commit themselves to him but only not to commit themselves to the Lord. The devil knows people will be lukewarm in their ties with him, but he wants them also to be lukewarm in their relationship with the Lord (see Rv 3:16).

Those who have won the victory over Satan, the beast (Satan's international system), the beast's "image, and also the number that signified its name" (Rv 15:2) are those who have not compromised with Satan. The victors have given Satan nothing so that they have everything to give to Jesus. "They are pure" (Rv 14:4), that is, single-hearted for Jesus (Mt 5:8). The victors have not even the most subtle and indirect tie with Satan.

Let us be in their number. Let us stand on heaven's fiery sea of glass (Rv 15:2). Let us live our Baptisms and reject Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises.

Prayer: Father, may I despoil the spoiler (Lk 11:22).

Promise: "By patient endurance you will save your lives." -Lk 21:19

Praise: Pope St. Clement was a devoted disciple and successor of St. Peter.

GOD'S "HOT POTATO"

"Then, as I watched, a white cloud appeared, and on the cloud sat One like a Son of Man wearing a gold crown on His head and holding a sharp sickle in His hand." -Revelation 14:14

Because God is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16), He wants all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4) and none damned (see 2 Pt 3:9). He wants all of us to be with Him forever in the perfect happiness of heaven.

Because God is Love, He wants to love us and be loved by us. Therefore, He made us free so that we could choose to love Him. Sadly, we can abuse our freedom and choose never to love the Lord, thereby condemning ourselves to hell.

God the Father wants so much for no one to go to hell that He sent His Son to die on the cross and the Holy Spirit to make us holy. God can't bear the thought of anyone going to hell. Thus, "the Father Himself judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son" (Jn 5:22). However, this judgment is delayed, for "God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him" (Jn 3:17). In fact, the Lord has thus far delayed it for two thousand years after His Incarnation. "He shows" us "generous patience, since He wants none to perish but all to come to repentance" (2 Pt 3:9). Finally, when Judgment Day arrives Jesus will harvest only those who are saved, while an angel will harvest the grapes of wrath (Rv 14:15ff). The Lord doesn't want you in hell. Repent and receive His mercy.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to free me from my selfishness so that I will not damn myself.

Promise: "So the One sitting on the cloud wielded His sickle over all the earth and reaped the earth's harvest." -Rv 14:16

Praise: The story of St. Cecilia promoted chastity and holiness against the secular literature of the time.

Revelation 14:1-5, Psalm 24:1-6, Luke 21:1-4

ANOTHER COLLECTION

Jesus "saw the rich putting their offerings into the treasury, and also a poor widow putting in two copper coins." -Luke 21:1-2

Because Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday (Heb 13:8), He is still observing us as we put our offerings in the collection. However, collections do not take place only at church. For example, the Lord takes up a collection every day from those He has joined together in marriage, for He has made marriage to be a life of total self-giving. In fact, the Lord takes up collections daily in the vocations and lives of all people.

What the Lord looks for in a collection is not so much quantity but sacrifice. He still points out with approval those who give from their need rather than from their surplus (see Lk 21:4).

Jesus put everything into the collection taken up on Calvary. He will give us the grace to give as He gave. Right now, Jesus is about to take up another collection. Put your life in the collection basket. Give without counting the cost. Give all in love. Jesus is watching. Jesus is loving. Give to, with, and in Jesus.

Prayer: Father, make me a joyful (see 2 Cor 9:7), sacrificial, and total giver.

Promise: "They are pure and follow the Lamb wherever He goes. They have been ransomed as the first fruit of mankind for God and the Lamb." -Rv 14:4

Praise: Sts. Ann and Joachim believed that God would work His plan through their daughter. They expressed their belief by presenting Mary to be raised in the Temple at the age of three.

PM eNewsletter Christ the King

November 20th, feast of Christ the King

Jesus, You are truly the Lord of Lords and King of Kings.

We are so blessed that You care for us, that You intercede for us, that You truly love us.

What a miracle, what a gift, You truly love each and every one of us, always.

We are precious in Your eyes, we are very important to You.

Yet, we constantly get so involved in life that we forget You.

Help us this day to truly let You be the Lord and King of our lives.

Let us bow to You in love.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE KING OF CONTROVERSY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=11/20/2016

"There was an inscription over His head: 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' " -Luke 23:38

In 1926, between the two world wars, Pope Pius XI instituted this feast of Christ the King. In
so doing, the Church was making a statement that its members were to give their absolute
allegiance to no government or person but only to Christ, the King of kings. Thus, we can see
why this feast and Jesus' claim to be the King of kings may be controversial.

For example, when the wise men asked Herod: "Where is the newborn king of the Jews?" (Mt 2:2),
"King Herod became greatly disturbed" (Mt 2:3). Before long, the village of Bethlehem was
traumatized by Herod's murders (Mt 2:16). The mere mention of Jesus' kingship resulted in all
hell breaking loose.

On the morning of Jesus' crucifixion, Pontius Pilate broached the subject of Jesus' kingship. He
asked Jesus: "Are You the King of the Jews?" (Jn 18:33) Jesus claimed to be the King of a
kingdom not belonging to this world (Jn 18:36). Jesus knew that Pilate knew He was the King
(Jn 18:37), but Pilate refused to admit it and even questioned whether there was objective truth
at all (Jn 18:38).

While Jesus was hanging on the cross, the controversy about His kingship continued. "The
soldiers also made fun of Him," and said, "If You are the king of the Jews, save Yourself"
(Lk 23:36, 37). The other criminal repented (Lk 23:40ff) and made the act of faith: "Jesus,
remember me when You enter upon Your reign" (Lk 23:42).

Let us not be like Herod, Pontius Pilate, and the bad thief. Rather, let us be like the good
thief and the wise men and women of the ages, who accept Jesus as their King on His terms.

Prayer: King Jesus, I live for You (2 Cor 5:15).

Promise: God "rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His
beloved Son." -Col 1:13

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, for destroying death forever!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THANKFULNESS AND GRATITUDE

MARY, OUR MODEL

... We are given a model, indeed the model, to whom we can look: Mary, our Mother. After
hearing the message of the Angel, she lifted up her heart in a song of praise and
thanksgiving to God.

"THE FULLNESS OF JOY"

Let us ask our Lady to help us recognize that everything is God's gift, and to be able to say
"Thank you". Then I assure you our joy will be complete. Only those who know how to say
"Thank you", will experience the fullness of joy.

"A HUMBLE HEART"

It also takes humility to be able to give thanks... The heart of Mary, more than any other, is
a humble heart, capable of accepting God's gifts... Let us ask ourselves - it will do us good
- if we are prepared to accept God's gifts, or prefer instead to shut ourselves up within our
forms of material security, intellectual security, the security of our plans.

THE KING OF CONTROVERSY

"There was an inscription over His head: 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' " -Luke 23:38

In 1926, between the two world wars, Pope Pius XI instituted this feast of Christ the King. In so doing, the Church was making a statement that its members were to give their absolute allegiance to no government or person but only to Christ, the King of kings. Thus, we can see why this feast and Jesus' claim to be the King of kings may be controversial.

For example, when the wise men asked Herod: "Where is the newborn king of the Jews?" (Mt 2:2), "King Herod became greatly disturbed" (Mt 2:3). Before long, the village of Bethlehem was traumatized by Herod's murders (Mt 2:16). The mere mention of Jesus' kingship resulted in all hell breaking loose.

On the morning of Jesus' crucifixion, Pontius Pilate broached the subject of Jesus' kingship. He asked Jesus: "Are You the King of the Jews?" (Jn 18:33) Jesus claimed to be the King of a kingdom not belonging to this world (Jn 18:36). Jesus knew that Pilate knew He was the King (Jn 18:37), but Pilate refused to admit it and even questioned whether there was objective truth at all (Jn 18:38).

While Jesus was hanging on the cross, the controversy about His kingship continued. "The soldiers also made fun of Him," and said, "If You are the king of the Jews, save Yourself" (Lk 23:36, 37). The other criminal repented (Lk 23:40ff) and made the act of faith: "Jesus, remember me when You enter upon Your reign" (Lk 23:42).

Let us not be like Herod, Pontius Pilate, and the bad thief. Rather, let us be like the good thief and the wise men and women of the ages, who accept Jesus as their King on His terms.

Prayer: King Jesus, I live for You (2 Cor 5:15).

Promise: God "rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son." -Col 1:13

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, for destroying death forever!

COME TO THE WITNESS STAND - One Bread, One Body, 11/19/2016

COME TO THE WITNESS STAND

"These witnesses have power." -Revelation 11:6

What do you picture when you think of the Church? Do you think of a building, a group of people praying, or a family at table? St. John, in the book of Revelation, pictures the Church as being witnesses (Rv 11:5), people testifying personally and publicly to their relationship with Jesus.

John pictures the Church as witnesses because Jesus commanded us before His Ascension to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8). Thus, to be a witness is foundational and essential to being a Christian. Our faith in Jesus must be personal and publicly communicated, or we are involved in an aberration of Christianity. We are "under compulsion and have no choice" to witness to Jesus and publicly proclaim His Gospel (see 1 Cor 9:16). We are ruined if we don't preach it (see 1 Cor 9:16).

The Church of witnesses has been so powerful in changing the world that the term "witness" has come to mean "martyr," someone who has been killed because of his love for the Lord. Will you accept the Holy Spirit's power to love God so much that you will speak publicly of that love and even be martyred for that love? Will you choose to be a member of the Church by Jesus' standards? Witness for Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may our attitude toward witnessing not be clouded by fear but motivated by love.

Promise: They "are no longer liable to death. Sons of the resurrection, they are sons of God." -Lk 20:36

Praise: Sheila witnessed to her brother during a long family trip and he listened.

THE WORD ON CLEANING THE TEMPLE - One Bread, One Body, 11/18/2016

Friday, November 18, 2016, Dedication of the Churches, of Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne

Revelation 10:8-11, Psalm 119:14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131, Luke 19:45-48
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/111816.cfm

THE WORD ON CLEANING THE TEMPLE

Jesus "entered the temple and began ejecting the traders saying: 'Scripture has it, "My house is meant for a house of prayer" but you have made it "a den of thieves." ' He was teaching in the temple area from day to day." -Luke 19:45-47

Jesus ejected the traders from the temple not only by turning over their tables but also by proclaiming a prophecy from Jeremiah and by teaching every day. The Holy Spirit uses the prophetic word like a "two-edged sword" to judge and purify the reflections and thoughts of our hearts (see Heb 4:12). "If an unbeliever or an uninitiate enters while all are uttering prophecy, he will be taken to task by all and called to account by all, and the secret of his heart will be laid bare" (1 Cor 14:24-25). Jesus makes the Church "holy, purifying her in the bath of water by the power of the word" (Eph 5:26). Jesus said to His apostles: "You are clean already, thanks to the word I have spoken to you" (Jn 15:3).

This book, One Bread, One Body, is one means by which Jesus continues to cleanse the temple, His Church. Consequently, read and pray daily the readings for Mass. Use One Bread, One Body as the Lord leads you. Encourage others to do the same. Let the Church be clean, pure, and holy.

Prayer: Father, make me pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3).

Promise: "You must prophesy again for many peoples and nations, languages and kings." -Rv 10:11

Praise: At the age of 71, St. Rose began a school for Native Americans.

A KNOW-NO?

"I wept bitterly because no one could be found worthy to open or examine the scroll." -Revelation 5:4

What is God's plan for the world and for your life? If you don't know God's plan, perhaps Jesus has wept over you and said: "If only you had known the path to peace this day; but you have completely lost it from view!" (Lk 19:41-42) You too should weep bitterly.

However, we don't have to be ignorant of God's plan, for Jesus "has won the right by His victory" to open God's scroll and reveal the meaning of life (Rv 5:5). "In times past, God spoke in fragmentary and varied ways to our fathers through the prophets; in this, the final age, He has spoken to us through His Son" (Heb 1:1-2). Jesus is the eternal Word made flesh (Jn 1:14). He is the only Way to know the Truth of the meaning of Life (Jn 14:6). Now we know what life is about because we know Jesus, Who is the Life (Jn 14:6; 11:25).

Listen to Jesus in His Body, the Church. Listen to the Church in her teachings, especially in the Bible. Know, rejoice in, and live God's plan, "a plan which [includes] us" (Heb 11:40). "You are not in the dark" (1 Thes 5:4). "No, all of you are children of light and of the day" (1 Thes 5:5). "Blest are your eyes because they see" (Mt 13:16).

Prayer: Father, make me a light to the "culture of death" in this world in darkness.

Promise: "You made of them a kingdom, and priests to serve our God, and they shall reign on the earth." -Rv 5:10

Praise: St. Elizabeth is the patron of bakers, the falsely accused, homeless, widows and young brides.

HOLY MASS: A HEAVENLY EXPERIENCE

"Holy, holy, holy..." -Revelation 4:8

The book of Revelation gives us a vision that lifts our minds and our spirits from an earthly to a heavenly perspective. St. John's vision helps us to set our hearts on heaven rather than earth (Col 3:1-2). More than anything else on earth, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass enables us to have not only a heavenly perspective, but even a heavenly experience. In the Mass, Jesus is present in the Eucharist. Jesus Himself said: "I Myself am the Living Bread come down from heaven" for us to eat and never die (Jn 6:50, 51). In the Person of the eucharistic Jesus, heaven is wedded to earth (Easter Vigil Exsultet).

In the Mass, we join with the angels and saints as they sing, "Holy, holy, holy" (Rv 4:8). In the Mass, we spend our lives in heavenly worship and earthly charity until Jesus returns. At Mass, we "praise the Lord in His sanctuary" (Ps 150:1). We wait in joyful hope for Jesus to come again and bring us with Him to heaven. In the Mass, we have "an open door to heaven" (Rv 4:1) as we join in the heavenly worship "around the throne" of God (Rv 4:3). In the Mass, "the Eucharist is celebrated in communion with the whole Church in heaven and on earth" (Catechism, 1354).

At Mass, "we have our citizenship in heaven; it is from there that we eagerly await the coming of our Savior" Jesus Christ (Phil 3:20). "Participation in the Holy Sacrifice [of the Mass]...unites us even now to the Church in heaven" (Catechism, 1419). Go to Mass as often as possible, even daily. Experience heaven on earth.

Prayer: Jesus, I invest my life in taking up the cup of salvation, the Bread of Life, and calling on Your name at Mass (Ps 116:12-13).

Promise: "Whoever has will be given more, but the one who has not will lose the little he has." -Lk 19:26

Praise: St. Gertrude was devoted to Christ's Passion and Christ in the Eucharist.

JESUS SAYS: "REPENT!"

"...heed the Spirit's word to the churches." -Revelation 3:22

In His seven letters to the churches in chapters 2-3 of Revelation, Jesus uses the word "repent" seven times. When's the last time you wrote a letter that mentioned the word "repent" even once, much less seven times? Since Jesus is the same today as He was two-thousand years ago (Heb 13:8), He surely wants churches and individuals to make repentance a top priority.

There are 168 hours in a week. It's not uncommon for parishes to schedule an hour or less weekly for Confession. That's less than one percent of the time in a week devoted to repentance. It's likely that, in some parishes, more time is spent each week emptying the trash than hearing Confessions. If Jesus looked at the weekly allocation of time in our churches, would He conclude that our churches place a higher priority on clean facilities than on clean souls? It's unlikely that He'd be satisfied with any excuse we'd proffer, when He Himself poured out His life to seek and save the lost (Lk 19:10).

There are 365 days in a year. One percent of this is three days. How many Catholics went to Confession three times this past year? If individual Catholics placed a high priority on repentance and Confession, they would find a way to increase the hours for Confessions, even if it meant having more children and fostering vocations so there would be more priests to hear Confessions.

Jesus promised that if we'd seek repentance and conversion, we would get it (see Mt 7:7-8). Jesus says this to the churches: "Be earnest about it, therefore. Repent!" (Rv 3:19)

Prayer: Jesus, You devoted Your entire life to conversion and repentance. As Your disciple, I commit myself to do the same.

Promise: "Today salvation has come to this house." -Lk 19:9

Praise: St. Albert saw no conflict between science and religion. He sought knowledge to "build up the souls of others with it."

EYE-OPENING FREEDOM

"At that very moment he was given his sight and began to follow Him, giving God the glory." -Luke 18:43

In the coming year, a world in slavery can be freed, debts can be forgiven, and the dispossessed can have their lands and lives restored to them (see Lv 25:8ff). Because our society is so far removed from God's Biblical order and because we are in such great need, most people, even Christians, don't see how freedom will ever happen. Can we realistically expect bankers to forgive debts? How many large landowners will give their land back to the poor? Will we suddenly be freed from all our addictions, compulsions, phobias, and anxieties?

Jesus promised not only to free slaves but also to open the eyes of the blind (Lk 4:18). Before we begin the new Church year, we must have our eyes opened. With the blind man of Jericho, we must cry out to Jesus: "I want to see" (Lk 18:41). Until we can see with the eyes of faith, how can we walk by faith and not by merely natural sight? (see 2 Cor 5:7) Until we can walk by faith, we cannot walk in freedom.

We must have spiritual sight to even entertain the thought of freedom. Pray: "Lord, I want to see" (see Lk 18:41).

Prayer: Father, let me see "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" the way You see them.

Promise: "I hold this against you, though: you have turned aside from your early love. Keep firmly in mind the heights from which you have fallen. Repent, and return to your former deeds." -Rv 2:4-5

Praise: Robert writes to and visits prisoners to share how Jesus set him free from sin.
