UNITED FRUIT PRODUCERS
“My Father has been glorified in your bearing much fruit and becoming My disciples.” —John 15:8

We must bear abundantly the fruit of holiness (see Gal 5:22ff) and evangelization (Jn 15:5). Otherwise, we will be like “a withered, rejected branch, picked up to be thrown in the fire and burnt” (Jn 15:6). We bear fruit abundantly by being attached to and living in the Vine, Jesus Christ (Jn 15:5). We must be abiding in Jesus and He in us, and stay in communion with all the others who abide in Jesus.

In the last few centuries of Christianity, we have the anomaly of Christians who maintain they are abiding in Jesus and yet are cut off from the other branches joined to Jesus, the Vine. Have you ever seen a tree where the branches are connected to the trunk but not to all the branches of the rest of the tree? This is a logical and botanical impossibility. Can you imagine a tree where several of the branches are independent of the trunk? These are those who are not in full communion with the Church.

Of course, Jesus is speaking analogously, and an analogy can be pressed too far. Nevertheless, Jesus, using another analogy, makes it clear that those baptized into Christ have been “baptized into one body” (1 Cor 12:13). If we are united to Jesus, the Head of the body, we are to be united to all the other parts of the body. Jesus promised that the world would believe when Christians are one (Jn 17:21). In unity, we will bear the great harvest leading to Jesus’ final return.

Prayer: Father, give me Your heart for world evangelization and Church unity.

Promise: “The Church saw them off and they made their way through Phoenicia and Samaria, telling everyone about the conversion of the Gentiles as they went. Their story caused great joy among the brothers.” —Acts 15:3

Praise: Bethany, a teenager, abides in Jesus by attending daily Mass and being open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

PAUL “ROCKS” LYSTRA
“We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God.” —Acts 14:22

St. Paul’s life had undergone a complete reversal. Paul (then known as Saul) approved the stoning of St. Stephen (Acts 7:58; 8:1). Now Paul was the one being stoned by the citizens of Lystra and being left for dead after preaching the Gospel (Acts 14:19).

Paul’s “disciples quickly formed a circle about him” and prayed (Acts 14:20). Paul was able to get up and was then courageous  enough to go right back into the same town that had just stoned him. Imagine seeing a man covered with bruises, who had been left for dead, and hearing him tell you, “We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God” (Acts 14:22). Paul had instant credibility as an evangelist! Paul left the next day to evangelize another town. But before long he returned a final time to minister in Lystra (Acts 16:1).

Inspired by St. Paul, let us courageously stand up for the truth of the Gospel and endure the sufferings and hardships required in living out the Gospel. Paul called himself “the worst” of sinners (1 Tm 1:15). But he broke with sin by his sufferings, and Jesus set him free to worship without fear and to prepare the way of the Lord throughout Asia Minor (see Lk 1:74-75). We are to live in peace, as Jesus says in today’s Gospel (Jn 14:27). “If possible, live peaceably with everyone” (Rm 12:18). However, may we never be ashamed of the Gospel (Rm 1:16). “Christ suffered in the flesh; therefore arm yourselves with His same mentality. He who has suffered in the flesh has broken with sin” (1 Pt 4:1).

Prayer: Father, may I believe in You with the same courage and conviction of St. Paul.

Promise: “ ‘Peace’ is My farewell to you, My peace is my gift to you.” —Jn 14:27

Praise: Diego studied the Bible intensely as a young adult. He now teaches the Faith to thousands.

THE SPIRIT RE-MINDS US
The Holy Spirit will “remind you of all that I told you.”—John 14:26

It’s so critical to fill our minds with the Word of God. Because the Holy Spirit will remind us of all the Lord has told us in His Word (Jn 14:26), we need to “deposit” the Word constantly into our mind. This allows the Holy Spirit to remind us of the appropriate word at the opportune time.

Similarly, it’s also so vital to fill our mind with holy thoughts (see Phil 4:8), godly insights through spiritual reading, and to hear godly preaching. The Holy Spirit specializes in bringing to mind the right Bible verse or insight at the right time. For example, to avoid sin, memorize this verse: “Within my heart I treasure Your promise, that I may not sin against You” (Ps 119:11). To avoid despair, an appropriate verse to memorize is: “But I will call this to mind, as my reason to have hope: The favors of the Lord are not exhausted, His mercies are not spent; they are renewed each morning, so great is His faithfulness” (Lam 3:21-23).

The Spirit also wants to “re-mind” us, that is, to make over our mind anew, to transform us by the renewal of our mind. Then the Spirit can bring to our renewed mind all that Jesus has taught us (Jn 14:26). Out of love for the Holy Spirit, let us offer Him our mind and allow the Spirit to transform us by the renewal of our mind (Rm 12:2). Let us love and serve the Lord with all our mind (Lk 10:27).

Prayer: Father, may Catholics find joy in memorizing Scripture passages.

Promise: “May you be blessed by the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.” —Ps 115:15

Praise: Danielle desired God’s wisdom. She set her computer password to be “James 1:5” and recited the verse to herself each time she typed her password: “If any of you is without wisdom, let him ask it from the God Who gives ungrudgingly to all, and it will be given him” (Jas 1:5).

THE TEMPTATION TO DO GOOD
“This will permit us to concentrate on prayer and the ministry of the word.” —Acts 6:4

“There is no chaining the word of God” (2 Tm 2:9), but the messengers of God’s Word can be chained. We are often chained through sin, selfishness, or fear. However, we can be chained in more subtle ways. For example, the devil tried to chain the apostles by making them think they needed to cut back temporarily on prayer and the ministry of the Word to deal with a disagreement in the early Church (Acts 6:2ff). He tempted them by encouraging them to do a good and needed work. Moreover, the devil didn’t tell them to completely quit their ministry of the Word but only to cut back just for a little while. However, once we deviate even slightly from our God-given call (even if we do it by performing good deeds), we are no longer doing God’s will. When we give an inch even for a moment, our inch turns into miles which can last forever.

Therefore:

  • Do God’s deeds, not good deeds.
  • Do nothing but His will.
  • Don’t interrupt or postpone God’s work. Do it now.
  • Don’t let up at all in proclaiming His Word in season and out of season (2 Tm 4:2).

•              Be a witness for the risen Christ full-time and forever.

Prayer: Father, by Your grace I will live my vocation to the full.

Promise: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God and faith in Me.” —Jn 14:1

Praise: Alleluia! Praise Jesus, “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25). He holds “the keys of death and the nether world” (Rv 1:18). Alleluia forever!

LIFE IN THE WORD
“The word of the Lord was carried throughout that area.” —Acts 13:49

The Word of the Lord is being carried at this moment throughout your area and throughout the world. However, you will be manipulated into rejecting and opposing God’s Word (see Acts 13:45-46), if there is unrepentant sin in your life. But if you repent, you will believe in God’s Word, delight in it, and respond to it with praise (Acts 13:48). This may result in your being persecuted by those who reject God’s Word. Yet you will “be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 13:52), for you have been privileged not only to believe in God’s Word but also to suffer for it (see Phil 1:29). In your suffering for accepting God’s Word, the Holy Spirit will rest on you (1 Pt 4:14), and you will do greater works than Jesus did (Jn 14:12), for anything you ask in His name He will do (Jn 14:14).

When we accept God’s Word, we enter into a new way of life. In God’s Word, we move from grace to grace (see Jn 1:16). By living in God’s Word, we walk in the Truth Who sets us free (Jn 8:31-32). Accept, abide in, and carry God’s Word.

Prayer: Father, may I tremble at Your Word (Is 66:2).

Promise: “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God.” —Ps 98:3

Praise: St. Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, Egypt, was exiled five times for defending the divinity of Jesus against the Arian heretics. Praise be to Jesus, true God and true man!

THE PLACE TO BE
“I am indeed going to prepare a place for you.” —John 14:3

In building His Church (Mt 16:18), Jesus has prepared a place for each of us. This is the place for which we were created. In this place, our hearts will not be troubled (see Jn 14:1). In our place in the Body of Christ, the Church, we will see the power and the glory of God. In our place, we will, by God’s grace and our faith, do greater things than Jesus did (Jn 14:12). Most of us will serve the Lord and His Church for many years. After being good and faithful servants in our place in His Church (Mt 25:21, 23), we will see Jesus keep His promise to “come back to take” us to our final resting place in heaven (Jn 14:3).

Therefore, love Jesus and His Church (Eph 5:25). Know your part in Christ’s Body in as much detail as possible. “Take your place” in the Church faithfully and fully (Acts 5:20). Rejoice to be who you are in Christ and in His Body. Proclaim that Jesus has prepared a place in His Church for everyone. No one need waste his life by doing his own thing. We don’t have to be “out of place.” Jesus, by His death, Resurrection, Ascension, and gift of the Holy Spirit, has made a place for us. Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, thank You for the uniqueness and perfection of Your plan for me (see Heb 11:40).

Promise: “We ourselves announce to you the good news that what God promised our fathers He has fulfilled for us, their children, in raising up Jesus.” —Acts 13:32-33

Praise: The memorial of St. Joseph the Worker was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1955 to honor the dignity of human labor through the patronage of St. Joseph, who worked for decades to support the Holy Family. Praise God for the humble faithfulness of St. Joseph.

SENT, NOT WENT
“I solemnly assure you, he who accepts anyone I send accepts Me, and in accepting Me accepts Him Who sent Me.”—John 13:20

The Father sent the Son to reveal His love for the world (Jn 3:16). In the same way, we are sent to reveal the Father’s love. The Father sent the Son to preach the good news of liberation and restoration to the poor (Lk 4:18). We likewise follow His example (see 1 Pt 2:21).

The Father sent Jesus to do good works and heal “all who were in the grip of the devil” (Acts 10:38). The Father sends us to do the works of Jesus “and greater far than these” (Jn 14:12). The Father sent the Son to die and rise; so we die to ourselves, take up our cross daily (Lk 9:23), and share in Jesus’ resurrection.

Christians don’t do their own thing or go their own way. They go only where they are sent by the Lord. They go to the highways and byways (see Lk 14:23) and “even to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Eventually, the Father sends them to their death and resurrection.

We at Presentation Ministries encourage you to attend Mass frequently, even daily if possible.  The word “Mass” means “sent.”  As you attend Mass, let the Lord send you as He sees fit.

Prayer: Father, “here I am...send me” anywhere (Is 6:8).

Promise: “The favors of the Lord I will sing forever; through all generations my mouth shall proclaim Your faithfulness.”—Ps 89:2

Praise: Pope St. Pius V published a new breviary and a new Missal. Reform of liturgical worship for the glory of God was always near to his heart.

ALL CHRISTIANS ARE MISSIONARIES
“May the peoples praise You, O God; may all the peoples praise You!” —Psalm 67:6

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He commanded us to “make disciples of all the nations” (Mt 28:19) and to be His witnesses “even to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). When the Holy Spirit spoke to the church of Antioch, He commanded it to set apart Sts. Barnabas and Saul to go on the first missionary journey (Acts 13:2).

God has made it clear that every Christian by definition is a missionary. Thus, we make ourselves the slaves “of all so as to win over as many as possible” (1 Cor 9:19). We make ourselves “all things to all men in order to save at least some of them” (1 Cor 9:22). In fact, we do all that we “do for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor 9:23). With Jesus, we “have come to light a fire on the earth. How [we] wish the blaze were ignited!” (Lk 12:49)

Missionary of Jesus Christ, complete your mission. Jesus is waiting for the Good News of His kingdom to “be proclaimed throughout the world” (Mt 24:14). Then He will come back to earth and take His missionaries with Him.

Prayer: Father, give me missionary zeal.

Promise: “I have come to the world as its Light, to keep anyone who believes in Me from remaining in the dark.” —Jn 12:46

Praise: Three Dominican priests were kept busy hearing the confessions of those people whom St. Catherine of Siena had urged to reform their lives.

(To learn more about the Bible and to be a more fruitful missionary, we have several series of audio teachings. To start, consider listening to, downloading, or ordering our audio teachings on the whole book of Matthew, AV 700, 701, 702 and 703 on our website.)

THE PLAIN TRUTH
“ ‘How long are You going to keep us in suspense? If You really are the Messiah, tell us so in plain words.’ Jesus answered: ‘I did tell you, but you did not believe.’ ” —John 10:24-25

There have been skeptics in every age. There have always been people with a “hard and impenitent heart” (Rm 2:5), who “refuse to believe” (Jn 10:26). These people are the rock-hard ground on which God’s Word falls (Mk 4:4, 15). Yet, while walking in the forest, I have often seen large trees growing directly out of huge rocks. Even the hardest hearts can be cracked open by the Word of God, which is “like a hammer shattering rocks” (Jer 23:29).

We only have a short lifetime on this earth in which to believe in Jesus — or not. Moreover, we only have a short time on this earth to bear fruit for the kingdom of God. “The time is short” (1 Cor 7:29). “The world as we know it is passing away” (1 Cor 7:31). Therefore, it is absolutely vital to believe the testimony of Jesus, Who speaks with authority (see Jn 5:31-39).

We who believe in Jesus urgently need to receive His love and then share our testimony of what He has done in our lives. We who believe in Jesus are His voice, His hands, and His feet, as St. Teresa of Avila said.

Let Jesus use you to spread the plain truth, to speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15), even to the fiercest skeptics. “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). Then tell whatever He does.

Prayer: Father, I am all Yours. Do whatever You must in me in order to do whatever You will through my life.

Promise: “No one shall snatch [My sheep] out of My hand.”—Jn 10:28

Praise: St. Louis’ greatest work, True Devotion to Mary, lay hidden for over a hundred years after his death. After the persecutions ended, a priest found the manuscript and published it.

DO YOU HEAR THE SPIRIT?
“The Spirit instructed me to accompany them without hesitation.” —Acts 11:12

“The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go and catch up with that carriage’ ” (Acts 8:29). When the church of Antioch was worshipping and fasting, “the Holy Spirit spoke to them” (Acts 13:2). After a meeting in Jerusalem regarding Gentile Christians, the leaders of the Church concluded: “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and ours too” (Acts 15:28). It wasn’t that the first Christians had a “hot line” to the Holy Spirit, because sometimes they missed the messages from the Holy Spirit (see Acts 16:6, 7). Nonetheless, the first Christians lived by the belief that the Holy Spirit was speaking to them and that they were usually listening for and hearing His messages.

How often do you openly say or consciously think that the Holy Spirit is directing you? Are you baptized, immersed in the Spirit? Is the Spirit on your mind, in your heart, and on the tip of your tongue? Are you filled with the Spirit? Do you hear the Spirit better than you did last year? What have you done to improve your spiritual hearing? Do you even hear things from the Holy Spirit that are contrary to what you would naturally want to hear?

The Spirit is our Teacher (Jn 14:26), Guide (Jn 16:13), and God. Therefore, we must let Him help us hear Him.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, break through my spiritual deafness. “Let him who has ears heed the Spirit’s word to the churches!” (Rv 2:7)

Promise: “There shall be one flock then, one Shepherd.”—Jn 10:16

Praise: The Holy Spirit put a desire in Patricia’s heart to regularly read the Bible.

VOICE RECOGNITION
“They recognize His voice.” —John 10:4

Before most phones had caller ID, you couldn’t know who was calling until you heard the caller’s voice. If the caller was your mother, you only needed a few seconds to be certain she was the person speaking to you; that recognition came from the relationship you had with her. You learned the sound of her voice by spending time with her.

Similarly, you must spend time listening to Jesus to be able to “recognize His voice” (Jn 10:4). How do you do this?

  • Repent of all sin. Sin blocks our hearing. Repentance, and especially the Sacrament of Confession, opens up our ears.
  • Turn off the voices of the world, many of which are “a stranger’s voice” (Jn 10:5). Practice regular silence. God speaks in the silence (see 1 Kgs 19:12ff). Each day, pray: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening” (see 1 Sm 3:10).
  • Read the Bible daily, especially the Gospels. “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133).
  • Go to Mass as often as possible, even daily. At every Mass, a reading from the Gospel is proclaimed. This is a prime way to learn Jesus’ voice.
  • Stay in the sheepfold, the Church. In that safety, you’ll hear His voice better (see Jn 10:3).
  • Set aside a regular time and place to intentionally listen to the Lord. For many, morning is a primary time to listen for the voice of the Shepherd (see Is 50:4). Be quiet and listen (see Ps 46:10, RSV-CE). Persevere. He’ll do the rest.

Prayer: Lord, open my ears that I may hear You (Ps 40:7).

Promise: “By His wounds you were healed.” —1 Pt 2:24

Praise: All praise and glory to You, risen Jesus, Good Shepherd. Be exalted and glorified forever.

FROM RUNNING AWAY TO RUNNING OVER (Ps 23:5)
“Mark my son…” —1 Peter 5:13

St. Mark has been traditionally identified with the scared young disciple in the garden of Gethsemane who ran off naked when the guards tried to arrest him: “With that, all deserted [Jesus] and fled. There was a young man following Him who was covered by nothing but a linen cloth. As they seized him he left the cloth behind and ran off naked” (Mk 14:50-52). Additionally, St. Mark has been identified with John Mark, who ran off from the first missionary journey and returned to Jerusalem (Acts 12:25; 13:13). St. Paul even considered Mark “not fit” for another missionary journey since “he had deserted them” during the first missionary journey (Acts 15:37-39). Can you imagine bearing such a tainted reputation that a leader would consider you unfit for ministry?

Mark also may not have had much fathering, possibly indicated by only his mother being mentioned in the Bible (Acts 12:12). However, St. Barnabas, Mark’s cousin (Col 4:10), provided “fathering” for Mark. Barnabas stood up for Mark so strongly that he and Paul separated (Acts 15:38-39). Barnabas took Mark on a separate missionary journey (Acts 15:39). Mark also was fathered by St. Peter, who called Mark “my son” (1 Pt 5:13). Eventually, Mark proved his worth even to St. Paul, who said that the matured Mark “can be of great service to me” (2 Tm 4:11).

Do you have a past filled with fearfully running away from problems? Did you lack godly fathering? Be encouraged by the life of St. Mark. He rose above his problems, trusted in God, and became a mighty evangelist.

Prayer: Father, “when I begin to fear, in You will I trust” (Ps 56:4).

Promise: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation.” —Mk 16:15

Praise: Tradition holds that St. Mark was martyred for his faith by being dragged through the streets. St. Mark, pray for us.

BE A “STREET PERSON”
“As he traveled along and was approaching Damascus, a light from the sky suddenly flashed about him.” —Acts 9:3

Saul was converted on the road to Damascus. The first Christian Pentecost began in the upper room and expanded to the streets. The Ethiopian eunuch, the first person to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth, was converted on the road from Jerusalem to Gaza (Acts 8:26ff).

The early Church was following in the footsteps of Jesus, Whose public ministry was often conducted in the streets. In fact, after His Resurrection from the dead, Jesus made a statement by spending the afternoon teaching two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Lk 24:13ff).

Are you in touch with your Christian roots? Is your parish a center for street ministry? When Christians are “off the streets,” the devil is more than ever “on the streets.” The Lord is giving us the power to take back the streets for Him after we emerge from our cocoon of extreme individualism, isolation, and selfishness. In our secular humanistic society, many people live in a high-tech world of virtual reality. Many have given up a life of love for a lifestyle of entertainment and distraction (see Lk 9:62). Get real. Get on the streets. Walk with people. Talk with people. Share Jesus with others. By God’s grace, help convert the most hardened hearts to Jesus. Be a “street person” for Jesus.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to make me Christ-centered and freed from harmful cultural conditioning.

Promise: “My flesh is real food and My blood real drink. The man who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.” —Jn 6:55-56

Praise: St. Fidelis ministered to widows, orphans, prisoners, the sick, and even those in the plague-stricken Austrian army.

WHAT GOD WANTS
“The Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away...Philip found himself at Azotus next, and he went about announcing the good news in all the towns.” —Acts 8:39, 40

Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would give His apostles the power to be His witnesses “even to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). It was difficult to imagine how this promise would be fulfilled. Jesus began fulfilling it by:

  • sending an angel to tell Philip to “head south toward” a certain road (Acts 8:26),
  • synchronizing the travel of a prestigious Ethiopian so that Philip saw his carriage (Acts 8:27-28),
  • sending the Spirit to tell Philip to catch up with the Ethiopian’s carriage (Acts 8:29),
  • prompting the Ethiopian to read from the prophet Isaiah without understanding what he read (Acts 8:30ff),
  • having the Ethiopian invite Philip to sit in his carriage (Acts 8:31),
  • giving Philip the understanding of this passage from Isaiah and the grace to communicate it (Acts 8:35),
  • planning the Ethiopian’s journey to approach water at this point (Acts 8:37), despite being in a desert (Acts 8:26),
  • converting and baptizing the Ethiopian (Acts 8:38), and
  • giving the Ethiopian joy in his salvation (Acts 8:39).

The Lord will go to great extents to convert each person He has created. He even became a man and died on the cross to save us. Be in God’s will. Do everything you can to lead as many people as possible to Christ (see 1 Cor 9:19).

Prayer: Father, may I want people to give their lives to You as much as I want to breathe.

Promise: “If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world.” —Jn 6:51

Praise: St. George gave his life as a martyr to witness to his faith in Jesus.

“THE DAY OF SALVATION” (2 Cor 6:2)
“That day saw the beginning of a great persecution of the church.” —Acts 8:1

This morning you went to the funeral of a brother in Christ, a leader in your church (Acts 8:2). His name was Stephen, and he was martyred by a hysterical mob. In your grief, you find yourself on the road — a fugitive running from St. Stephen’s murderers. Those remaining in town are being terrorized by a man named Saul, who “entered house after house, dragged men and women out, and threw them into jail” (Acts 8:3). This is a sad day — a day of violence, trauma, fear, imprisonment, separation, grief, and murder.

As you walk along, wondering if you’ll be caught, you meet other travelers and residents of small country towns. Your love for Jesus wells up; the Spirit “puts words in your mouth” (see Mt 10:20); you speak from the abundance of your heart (Lk 6:45). After living through so much bad news, you still share the Good News of Jesus. People with their own bad news accept God’s gift of faith and believe in Jesus. On some occasions, signs and wonders accompany your profession of faith (Mk 16:17-18). Several people are healed and set free from the evil one. “The rejoicing in that town rose to fever pitch” (Acts 8:8).

Prayer: Father, when I experience bad news, speak the Good News through me.

Promise: “I Myself am the Bread of Life. No one who comes to Me shall ever be hungry, no one who believes in Me shall ever thirst.” —Jn 6:35

Praise: The Winters, both physicians, moved into the poorest section of town to open a medical clinic, raise their family, and bring Jesus into the lives of the poor.

THE GREATEST PRAYER
“As Stephen was being stoned he could be heard praying, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ ” —Acts 7:59

King David prayed to the Lord: “Into Your hands I commend my spirit” (Ps 31:6). In this prayer, David put his trust in the Lord (Ps 31:7).

Jesus prayed this same prayer on the cross right before He died. This was a prayer of supreme trust even to death. Jesus prayed not only to God; He specifically addressed God, the Father (Lk 23:46).

St. Stephen prayed Psalm 31:6 and Luke 23:46 right before he was martyred for love of Jesus. He addressed this prayer not to the Father, but to Jesus, Lord, that is, God. Stephen prayed this prayer audibly even while being stoned by a crowd of murderers (Acts 7:59). This was not the last prayer Stephen prayed. After he gave his life to Jesus, Stephen “fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them’ ” (Acts 7:60; cf Lk 23:34).

Let us pray with David and trust God with our lives. Let us pray with Jesus and trust God the Father in our deaths. Let us pray with Stephen and trust the Lord Jesus. Let us forgive as Jesus forgave even on the cross. Jesus, Lord and God (Jn 20:28), teach us to pray Psalm 31:6, Luke 23:46, and Acts 7:59.

Prayer: Father, I put my life in Your hands.

Promise: “I Myself am the Bread of Life.” —Jn 6:35

Praise: St. Anselm was twice exiled because he defended the authority of the pope.

THE WORK’S PLACE
“What must we do to perform the works of God?” —John 6:28

Because we have given our lives to the risen Jesus, everything in our lives, especially work, is radically new. We don’t work for perishable food, that is, for salary, profit, benefits, recognition, or power; rather, we work for “food that remains unto life eternal” (Jn 6:27). We work to become holy not only in the context of our jobs but through our jobs (see Lumen Gentium, Vatican II, 41, and Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 15). Whether we earn a million dollars or weren’t getting paid at all, we would still go to work, for the Lord has chosen our work to be one of the main places where He makes us holy as He is holy (see 1 Pt 1:16).

We must accept the Lord’s “way of holiness” (see Mt 6:33) by accepting Him as Lord of our lives and of our work.

Therefore:

  • Don’t work on Sundays unless your state of life requires it.
  • “Do not render service for appearance only and to please men” (Eph 6:6).
  • “Give your service willingly, doing it for the Lord rather than men” (Eph 6:7).
  • “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being” (Col 3:23).
  • “Be submissive” to your employers and “try to please them in every way” (Ti 2:9).
  • “Be slaves of Christ the Lord” (Col 3:24).
  • “Do all for the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31).

Prayer: Father, may I work out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil 2:12).

Promise: Stephen “was a man filled with grace and power, who worked great wonders and signs among the people.” —Acts 6:8

Praise: Getting laid off is something for which Jerry now gives thanks to God. It brought his family closer together.

HOW CAN I KNOW JESUS?
“They had come to know Him in the breaking of bread.” —Luke 24:35

During the upcoming week, the Church in daily Mass reads to us from the Bread of Life discourse (Jn 6:25-59). Today’s Gospel, recounting the disciples’ encounter with Jesus on the road to the village of Emmaus, leads directly to the Eucharist. Prepared by an in-depth journey through the Old Testament Scriptures foretelling the Messiah, the disciples recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread (Lk 24:30-31).

This week, the Church will once again prepare us to recognize Jesus truly present in the Holy Eucharist. It will do this by an in-depth reading of that Bread of Life discourse. It is critical to dwell deeply in the Word of God in order to recognize Jesus. Less than half of registered Catholics believe in the Real Presence of Jesus, Body, Blood, soul, and divinity, in the Eucharist. This unbelief is symptomatic of a famine for the Word of God and thus a famine for the Bread of Life (Am 8:11).

Therefore, ask the Lord for an insatiable hunger for the food of the Kingdom — the bread of God’s Word (Mt 4:4) and the Holy Eucharist (Jn 6:35). Read the Bible daily. Learn to recognize Jesus. “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133). If we aren’t living in the Word, we risk missing the time of our visitation (Lk 19:44).

Prayer: Father, may I prefer to spend a day without eating rather than spend a day without reading Your Word.

Promise: “You were delivered from the futile way of life your fathers handed on to you…by Christ’s blood beyond all price.” —1 Peter 1:18-19

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, Word-made-Flesh and Lamb of God (Jn 1:14, 29).

“The word of God continued to spread.” —Acts 6:7

The Lord calls us to abide in His Word (Jn 8:31). We are to meditate on His law and Word day and night (Ps 1:2). We should “recite it by day and by night” (Jos 1:8). God’s Word must be the “joy and the happiness” of our hearts (Jer 15:16).

However, the world, the flesh, and the devil try to distract us from living in God’s Word and thereby from living God’s Word. We are tempted to divert our energies toward dealing with certain problems instead of continuing in the ministry of the Word (see Acts 6:2). However, like the apostles, we should call on others to deal with some problems so that we don’t lose our concentration on God’s Word (see Acts 6:4). For example, while St. Paul was preaching, Eutychus fell out of a third-story window and apparently died (Acts 20:9). But Paul healed the boy and then continued preaching (Acts 20:10-11). Paul told St. Timothy to preach and teach God’s Word in season and out of season (2 Tm 4:2). The last words of the Acts of the Apostles are: “Paul preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ without any hindrance” (see Acts 28:31).

Jesus didn’t let even His own death stop His ministry of the Word. He rose from the dead and interpreted “every passage of Scripture which referred to Him” (Lk 24:27) and “opened [the apostles’] minds to the understanding of the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45). Never let yourself be distracted from “teaching and proclaiming” God’s Word (Acts 5:42).

Prayer: Father, may I never let myself be chained in ministering your unchainable Word (see 2 Tm 2:9).

Promise: “They sighted Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water. They were frightened, but He told them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ ” —Jn 6:19-20

Praise: Jesus delivered Rico from an addiction to alcohol. Now he volunteers in his parish ministering to those exploring the truths of the Catholic faith.

THE BATTLE OF MULTIPLICATIONS
Jesus “said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ (He knew well what He intended to do but He asked this to test Philip’s response.)” —John 6:5-6

Jesus multiplied the loaves and fish, and continues to multiply food, money, time, and energy for those who give Him their all. Satan reacts to this by doing some multiplying of his own. Satan multiplied Theudas’ followers, and helped Judas the Galilean also build “up quite a following” (Acts 5:35-37). Satan likes to multiply the followers, financial support, and media coverage of people and projects opposed to God’s kingdom. Look at the abundant multiplication of Planned Parenthood’s resources in recent generations.

Would a neutral observer conclude that Satan is more proficient  at multiplying than Jesus?  Of course, Satan can multiply sin, and there is plenty of that for his use. But Jesus multiplies total commitment, which is rare (see Mt 19:21-22). However, Satan’s multiplications don’t last, while Jesus’ multiplication miracles endure. Additionally, where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more (Rm 5:20).

Give Jesus the raw materials for a multiplication. Give Jesus everything, and He will multiply it to overcome Satan’s culture of death with a new civilization of life and love.

Prayer: Father, I repent of holding back and not giving my all to You.

Promise: “If, on the other hand, it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them without fighting God Himself.”—Acts 5:39

Praise: Sarah spent much of her time staring at her smartphone. She found a copy of One Bread, One Body in her church and began meditating on the Mass readings each day. She found a new peace, gave her life totally to Jesus, and set down her phone.

ACCEPT AND OBEY
“Whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure the wrath of God.” —John 3:36

We obey what we accept, as per Jesus (see Jn 3:33). Do we accept God’s testimony about His Son, Jesus? (Jn 3:32) Or do we accept the values of the modern world, disbelieve God, and “make Him a liar”? (1 Jn 1:10; 5:10)

What we accept, we obey. If we obey God, He gives us the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:32), and “He does not ration” the gift of the Holy Spirit (Jn 3:34).

You’re obeying someone, even if you think you are independent. Whose voice do you accept and obey, the voice of God or the voice of “the god of the present age,” that is, the devil? (2 Cor 4:4) There is a cosmic and earthly battle between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. In light of this spiritual war, partial  obedience to God is actually disobedience (see 1 Sm 15:1-24).

Therefore, what do you accept? Who will you obey? God doesn’t ration the Spirit; we do. Will you stifle the Holy Spirit by putting up a “spiritual umbrella”? (see 1 Thes 5:19) Accept God’s testimony through the Church and her Bible; obey God; “receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Father, You have spent centuries revealing Your testimony so I could have the opportunity to decide freely about Jesus. “I do believe!” (Mk 9:24) Pour out Your Spirit on me so I may obey You fully (Jn 3:34).

Promise: “Whoever believes in the Son has life eternal.” —Jn 3:36

Praise: Bill, a college student, read the writings of the early Church Fathers out of a desire to grow closer to Jesus. He began to hunger to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, and shared his discovery with his entire family. They all converted to Catholicism together. Now Bill is a Catholic priest.

JESUS TEACHES
“Those men you put in jail are standing over there in the temple, teaching the people.” —Acts 5:25

Jesus wants His sheep to be fed physically and especially spiritually (see Jn 21:15, 17). He wants His people to be taught His Good News. Jesus Himself repeatedly gave up His rest and food to teach vast crowds “at great length” (Mk 6:34). “He would teach in the temple by day” (Lk 21:37). After St. Mary Magdalene recognized Jesus risen from the dead, she called Him “ ‘Rabbouni!’ (meaning ‘Teacher’ )” (Jn 20:16). Jesus spent the afternoon of the day of His Resurrection teaching the Bible as He walked for miles with two of His disciples (Lk 24:27). Jesus spent the evening of the day of His Resurrection opening the apostles’ minds to the understanding of the Scriptures (Lk 24:45).

After the first Christian Pentecost, the newborn Church caught on to Jesus’ emphasis on teaching. The Church devoted herself to the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42). After an angel freed the apostles from jail, “they went into the temple at dawn and resumed their teaching” (Acts 5:21). They “filled Jerusalem” with their teaching (Acts 5:28). “Day after day, both in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah” (Acts 5:42). They concentrated on “prayer and the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4). “The word of God continued to spread” (Acts 6:7).

Prayer: Father, I join the movement of proclaiming Your Word.

Promise: “Yes, God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life.” —Jn 3:16

Praise: “When the afflicted man called out, the Lord heard, and from all his distress He saved him” (Ps 34:7). Alleluia!

THE ONLY HOPE
“Do not be surprised that I tell you you must all be begotten from above.” —John 3:7

Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin, the Supreme Court of the Jewish people (Jn 3:1). He held “the office of teacher of Israel” (Jn 3:10). Yet he did not understand that we:

  • must be “born again” (Jn 3:4),
  • must be “begotten from above” (Jn 3:3), and
  • can be “begotten of water and Spirit” (Jn 3:5).

Even today, after thousands of years of massive violence, injustice, war, deceit, and selfishness, most people are like Nicodemus. They don’t realize that our human nature is so fallen and wounded that it cannot be repaired or adequately controlled. Possibly they refuse to come to the obvious conclusion about the condition of our human nature because they believe it would leave them hopeless. They prefer a groundless, mindless hope to the stark truth.

Thankfully, we do not have to choose between being a naive fool or a candidate for suicide. Jesus is our Savior. He saved us by dying and rising for us (see 1 Cor 15:3-4). We can be baptized into His death and Resurrection (Rm 6:3-4). In Jesus, we can crucify our old nature (see Gal 5:24) and be raised as new creations (Gal 6:15).

The risen Jesus is our Savior, Hope, Truth, Life, Lord, and God. Worship Jesus and witness for Him.

Prayer: Father, give me so much love that I will proclaim the truth about the hope of new life in Christ.

Promise: “The community of believers were of one heart and one mind. None of them ever claimed anything as his own; rather, everything was held in common. With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.” —Acts 4:32-33

Praise: Keith is a gifted cook. He pours his talents into cooking “meals of love” for people on retreat, that they may be filled with Jesus as well as tasty food.

NIGHT LIGHT
Nicodemus “came to [Jesus] at night.” —John 3:2

When you’re in the darkness of the tomb rather than in the light of the risen Son, you need to see the light (see Jn 1:4-5). This guiding light often comes in the form of a prophecy or a revelation. For example, Sts. Peter and John were in a terrible situation. They had been arrested and spent the night in jail (Acts 4:3). A persecution was beginning to rage that would ultimately result in the brutal murder-martyrdom of several believers. How was the early Church to come out of the darkness of fear and violence?

They gathered together for prayer, and the Lord gave them a prophecy to reassure them (Acts 4:25-26; Ps 2:1-2). Then they were given a specific intercessory prayer: “Grant to Your servants, even as they speak Your words, complete assurance by stretching forth Your hand in cures and signs and wonders to be worked in the name of Jesus, Your holy Servant” (Acts 4:29-30). They had obviously received divine enlightenment, for “the place where they were gathered shook as they prayed. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak God’s word with confidence” (Acts 4:31).

When nothing’s going right, when darkness is overshadowing the light, seek the light of prophecy and revelation. Prophecy will encourage and guide you. A revelation will focus your prayer on a specific intention. The Spirit will move and the Word will be proclaimed with “complete assurance” (Acts 4:29).

Prayer: Jesus, risen Light, shine on me.

Promise: “I solemnly assure you, no one can enter into God’s kingdom without being begotten of water and Spirit.” —Jn 3:5

Praise: An assassin attempted to murder Pope St. Martin I but was struck blind by divine providence and so failed to kill him.

“HIS GREAT MERCY” (1 Pt 1:3)
“...Who in His great mercy gave us new birth; a birth unto hope which draws its life from the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…” —1 Peter 1:3

Three times Jesus said to His apostles, “Peace be with you” (Jn 20:19, 21, 26). This literally means “shalom,” a peace which is complete and harmonious. Jesus forgave the sins of the apostles and poured out divine mercy upon them.

“God is rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4). He gives so many chances to us who are slow to grasp and believe in His mercy. He wants very much to have us believe in His merciful love, in His unlimited compassion. “His mercy endures forever” (Ps 118:1).

St. Thomas the Apostle came to belief because he encountered Divine Mercy Incarnate, Jesus, his Lord and his God (Jn 20:28). Some day we will come face to face with Mercy Incarnate (1 Cor 13:12). Will this encounter be on the Day of Judgment? Hopefully that’s not the first time you meet Divine Mercy.

Now is the time (see 2 Cor 6:2). Now is the season of mercy. Jesus of Mercy is constantly trying to tell you: “Peace be with you, mercy be with you.” Do not doubt His mercy. Receive His mercy. Do the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and live a life of complete trust in the mercy of God.

Prayer: “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28)

Promise: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ instruction and the communal life, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” —Acts 2:42

Praise: “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever” (Ps 118:1).

NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES (Phil 2:9)
“We must give them a stern warning never to mention that Man’s name to anyone again.” —Acts 4:17

I’m attending Mass in a Church called Holy Name. This church building has a mosaic behind the altar which proclaims:

  • “Ask in My Name,”
  • “Holy is His Name,”
  • “And thou shalt call His Name Jesus.”

A Church dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus is a fitting place in which to hear today’s readings, which continue the story from yesterday’s readings that “there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12). “In the power of that name this [man born lame] stands before you perfectly sound” (Acts 4:10).

There is more power in the Name of Jesus than in all the forces of evil combined (see e.g. Lk 10:17). Therefore, have confidence in the Name of Jesus. He promised: “Whatever You ask the Father, He will give you in My name” (Jn 16:23). The archangel Gabriel told St. Joseph to name Mary’s Child Jesus, a name which means “God saves” (see Mt 1:21). Therefore, even  His name indicates Jesus’ power to save.

“Whatever you do, whether in speech or in action, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col 3:17). May His Name be constantly in your heart and be constantly on your lips.

Prayer: Jesus, “Your name spoken is a spreading perfume” (Sg 1:3). May we always speak Your Holy Name in love, devotion, reverence, faith, and power.

Promise: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation.” —Mk 16:15

Praise: “God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name above every other name, so that at Jesus’ name every knee must bend in the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth, and every tongue proclaim to the glory of God the Father: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!” (Phil 2:9-11)
