SOME AWE
"Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the Lord's disciples, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus which would empower him to arrest and bring to Jerusalem anyone he might find, man or woman, living according to the new way." —Acts 9:1-2

As Saul was cruising on the road to Damascus, he was likely thinking of his return trip when he would be moving a chain gang of Christians on that same Damascus road. Saul reacted to being an accomplice to the murder of Stephen by violently trying to justify his murderous sinfulness. He had been such a zealous anti-Christian that he later rated himself as the foremost sinner in the world (1 Tm 1:15), "a blasphemer, a persecutor, a man filled with arrogance" (1 Tm 1:13). Saul's conversion proved that the Lord can, does, and will convert anybody.

Therefore:

  • There is hope for you by God's mercy, no matter what you have done.
  • Pray expectantly for the most evil people in the world to be converted, particularly your enemies.
  • There is hope for your marriage and family, no matter what has happened.
  • Be another Ananias, courageously bringing new life in the Spirit to extremely dangerous people (Acts 9:10ff).
  • Be awed by the Lord's love, power, and mercy in converting Saul.

Saul's conversion is awesome. Be awed into hope and joy.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me a new perspective on those whom I have considered the most lost.

Promise: "The man who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him." —Jn 6:56

Praise: "Isn't this the carpenter's Son?" (see Mt 13:55) St. Joseph, you instructed the young Jesus in a dignified trade; pray for us who labor.

THE BIRTHPLACE OF WORLD EVANGELIZATION - One Bread, One Body,04/30/2020

THE BIRTHPLACE OF WORLD EVANGELIZATION
"The Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away." —Acts 8:39

Jesus' last words before He ascended into heaven were: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down on you; then you are to be My witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, yes, even to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Philip, the deacon and evangelist (see Acts 21:8), may have been the first person to fulfill the promise and command of Jesus to be His witness to the ends of the earth.

Philip was instrumental in reaching Ethiopia with the Gospel. He did this by converting the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:35). Philip qualified for this international harvest of souls because he had first preached in Samaria (Acts 8:5). Prior to this he served the Lord and His Church as a deacon in Judea and Jerusalem. First of all, Philip was a family man. He shared the Gospel of Jesus with his four daughters, who became prophetesses in the early Church (see Acts 21:9). Philip was an evangelist because he first served as a deacon. He was a deacon and evangelist because he first evangelized as a husband and father.

International evangelization begins at home. The family is the birthplace of world mission. If we are faithful in first things, the Lord will entrust us with later missions. "Bloom where you're planted." Then plant the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Prayer: Father, make my family a "domestic church" (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1655ff, 1666).

Promise: "No one can come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me draws him; I will raise him up on the last day." —Jn 6:44

Praise: Pope St. Pius V was elected shortly after the close of the Council of Trent. He took on the enormous challenge of implementing the decrees of the council, many responding to the Protestant Reformation. In his humble way, he continued to wear his Dominican habit while Pope.

THE VOCATION IN ALL LOCATIONS - One Bread, One Body, 04/29/2020

Acts 8:1-8
Psalm 66:1-7
John 6:35-40
View Readings

THE VOCATION IN ALL LOCATIONS
"Philip, for example, went down to the town of Samaria and there proclaimed the Messiah." —Acts 8:5

Philip, the deacon, was a witness for the risen Jesus no matter where he was. He witnessed in Jerusalem and even in Samaria. Philip witnessed to Simon the Magician (Acts 8:13), the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:35), and his four daughters who became prophetesses (Acts 21:8-9). He witnessed at home, in Jerusalem, in Samaria, and then in the Ethiopian's chariot on "the road which goes from Jerusalem to Gaza, the desert route" (Acts 8:26). Then the Spirit "snatched Philip away" (Acts 8:39). "Philip found himself at Azotus next, and he went about announcing the good news in all the towns until he reached Caesarea" (Acts 8:40).

Because Philip began as a family man to witness to his family, he was led in stages to witness to the ends of the earth by the effects of the Ethiopian's conversion. Philip exemplified the last words of Jesus before His Ascension: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down on you; then you are to be My witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, yes, even to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Do you witness for the risen Jesus everywhere, especially beginning at home? Do you freely break the unwritten rules against witnessing for Jesus at work, at school, even in some homes, and in countless other places in our secular humanistic culture of death? Where are the places in your life where you are most strongly tempted to join in the exclusion of Jesus? By the power of the Holy Spirit, be like Philip. May you never let your location stop you from living your vocation to witness for the risen Jesus.

Prayer: Father, fill me with love for Jesus. May I always speak from the abundance of that love (Lk 6:45).

Promise: "No one who comes will I ever reject." —Jn 6:37

Praise: St. Catherine was the 23rd child in her family. The Lord had special plans for her. She greatly influenced public affairs and had a profound impact on the papacy in her time.

Rescript: In accord with the "Code of Canon Law", I hereby grant the "Nihil Obstat" ("Permission to Publish") for "One Bread, One Body."

THE FACE OF PEACE - One Bread, One Body, 04/27/2020

Monday, April 27, 2020,

Acts 6:8-15
Psalm 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30
John 6:22-29

THE FACE OF PEACE
"The members of the Sanhedrin who sat there stared at him intently. Throughout, Stephen's face seemed like that of an angel." —Acts 6:15

If a large number of people were debating with you, what would be the expression on your face and the reactions in your heart? What if, after your opponents lost the debate, "they persuaded some of the men to make the charge that they had heard" you "speaking blasphemies" (Acts 6:11)? When others lie about you and falsely accuse you, how do you look; how do you act? If these liars were believed and you were accosted, seized, and brought to court, how would you react, especially when more liars accused you of blasphemy? Stephen, the victim of all these crimes, took it quite well. His "face seemed like that of an angel" (Acts 6:15).

Stephen was profoundly peaceful because he had his eyes fixed on Jesus (see Acts 7:55-56), "Who inspires and perfects our faith" (Heb 12:2). Like Jesus at the time of His death, Stephen entrusted His life to the Lord (Acts 7:59; cf Lk 23:46). Like Jesus at the time of His death, Stephen also forgave his murderers (Acts 7:60; cf Lk 23:34). Stephen had such amazing peace under such evil conditions because he was immersed into, preoccupied with, and baptized into Jesus. His attention was entirely on Jesus. Stephen was like Jesus and lived through Jesus, with Jesus, in Jesus, and for Jesus. Stephen had peace in Jesus (Jn 16:33).

When we began the Easter season, we renewed our baptismal promises. Baptized into the risen Jesus, we have peace beyond understanding (Phil 4:7).

Prayer: Father, transform me completely through the risen Christ.

Promise: "You should not be working for perishable food but for food that remains unto life eternal, food which the Son of Man will give you." —Jn 6:27

Praise: Ann volunteers at a soup kitchen and prays with those she feeds.

PM eNewsletter 3rd Sunday of Easter

April 26th Third Sunday of Easter

Jesus, Easter is a time of great joy for us because we celebrate Your resurrection from the dead.

You have covered the effects of all sin forever.

We can't out sin Your forgiveness.

Help us, oh! Jesus, to really do all we can do to forgive those who have hurt us.

Help us to not only forgive, but forget.

Help us to be free of anger and resentment.

Help us to ask ourselves, "what would Jesus do?", "what would Jesus say?", then grace us to live forgiveness.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL
https://www.presentationministries.com/series/obob/obob-2020-4-26-en

"Your faith and hope, then, are centered in God." -1 Peter 1:21

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus said they "were hoping" that Jesus would redeem Israel (Lk 24:21).
The two disciples lost hope when Jesus was crucified. Many likewise may be struggling to hold on to hope.
We may feel that we have "toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent" our strength in our families,
evangelization, work, or life in general (Is 49:4). We know that the Lord has promised that our "hope will
not leave us disappointed," but we feel disappointed anyway (see Rm 5:5).

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus found their lost hope when their hearts were burning as Jesus
interpreted the Scriptures for them (Lk 24:32) and when they recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread,
which probably refers to the Eucharist (Lk 24:35). Our hope is in Jesus teaching us His Word and giving us
His Body and Blood.

However, we will not accept the power of the risen Christ to transform our lives until we yield to and
receive the Holy Spirit in a new Pentecost. For example, Peter met the risen Christ several times, heard His
words of life for years, and was even at the Last Supper. However, Peter put hope in Christ permanently when
the Holy Spirit transformed Him at Pentecost (see Acts 2:14ff). By the Holy Spirit, we put our hope in Christ
to the glory of the Father.

Prayer: Father, make me a messenger of hope.

Promise: "Conduct yourselves reverently during your sojourn in a strange land. Realize that you were
delivered from the futile way of life." -1 Pt 1:17-18

Praise: "Sing to the Lord; bless His name" (Ps 96:2). "For great is the Lord and highly to be praised;
awesome is He" (Ps 96:4).

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
https://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-11.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT

... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

THE CHURCH AND THE POOR

For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways and
through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery are not
different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and support
them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may boast its
own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.

"HOPES OF MILLIONS"

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that great
number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and yet recent
statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.

HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL
"Your faith and hope, then, are centered in God." —1 Peter 1:21

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus said they "were hoping" that Jesus would redeem Israel (Lk 24:21). The two disciples lost hope when Jesus was crucified. Many likewise may be struggling to hold on to hope. We may feel that we have "toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent" our strength in our families, evangelization, work, or life in general (Is 49:4). The two disciples on the road to Emmaus found their lost hope when their hearts were burning as Jesus interpreted the Scriptures for them (Lk 24:32) and when they recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread, which probably refers to the Eucharist (Lk 24:35). Our hope is in Jesus teaching us His Word and giving us His Body and Blood.

MARK'S-MAN - One Bread, One Body, 04/25/2020

Saturday, April 25, 2020, St. Mark

1 Peter 5:5-14
Psalm 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17
Mark 16:15-20

MARK'S-MAN
"Then He told them: 'Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation.' " —Mark 16:15

Mark ends his Gospel with Jesus' command to proclaim the Good News. He begins his Gospel proclaiming "Jesus Christ, the Son of God" (Mk 1:1). He divides his Gospel into two parts. Each part culminates in proclaiming Jesus as Messiah (Mk 8:29) and the Son of God (Mk 15:39). Mark proclaims Jesus from the beginning to the end of his Gospel. He boasts of nothing but the Lord (2 Cor 10:17; 1 Cor 1:31).

During this Easter season, are you becoming more and more like Mark? Is the name "Jesus" on the tip of your tongue? Do you want to shout from the rooftops that Jesus is alive and risen from the dead? (Lk 12:3) Is "Jesus" the last word on your lips before you fall asleep? In the morning, when your eyes open, does your mouth open and say the name above all names, "Jesus"? (Phil 2:9)

From the beginning to the end of life, "Jesus" is the only name by which we can be saved. "There is no salvation in anyone else" (Acts 4:12). Remove the bushel basket of fear and sin (see Mk 4:21). Proclaim Jesus, our risen Lord!

Prayer: Father, may I read several chapters of Mark's Gospel today and be transformed by the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "Cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." —1 Pt 5:7

Praise: "Get Mark and bring him with you, for he can be of great service to me" (2 Tm 4:11). St. Paul found St. Mark helpful and so can we. St. Mark, pray for us!

(Celebrate St. Mark's feast day by ordering, viewing or downloading our leaflet Simple Reading Guide to Matthew and Mark on our website.)

THE CHURCH IS FROM GOD - One Bread, One Body, 04/24/2020

Friday, April 24, 2020, St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen

Acts 5:34-42
Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14
John 6:1-15

THE CHURCH IS FROM GOD
"If their purpose or activity is human in its origins, it will destroy itself. If, on the other hand, it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them." —Acts 5:38-39

The apostles had been arrested for teaching the people of Jerusalem about Jesus. They were brought to trial before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish "Supreme Court." The apostles stood their ground and declared they would continue teaching about Jesus, and would obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). "When the Sanhedrin heard this, they were stung to fury and wanted to kill them. Then a member of the Sanhedrin stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law highly regarded by all the people. He had the accused ordered out of court for a few minutes, and then said to the assembly, '...Have nothing to do with these men. Let them alone. If their purpose or activity is human in its origins, it will destroy itself. If, on the other hand, it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them without fighting God Himself' " (Acts 5:33-35, 38-39).

We who live in the twenty-first century should stop and think about the origins of Christianity. We are asked to give our lives to a Man condemned to death, the equivalent of being put to death today in the electric chair. His main followers were a group of uneducated fishermen. Yet we moderners still continue to follow this Man two thousand years later. This is a great testament to the truth that Jesus is God and His Church is led by the Holy Spirit.

Gamaliel's words echo strongly today, just as they did to the Sanhedrin. Gamaliel and St. Luke are telling us that the Church comes from God. Pour your heart and your life into God's Church.

Prayer: "Lord, remember Your church throughout the world; make us grow in love together with" our Pope, bishops, and clergy.

Promise: "I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living." —Ps 27:13

Praise: St. Fidelis, a priest and martyr, prayed that he be completely faithful to God and not give in to lukewarmness or apathy.

THE MEAL OF LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 04/23/2020

Thursday, April 23, 2020, St. George
St. Adalbert

Acts 5:27-33
Psalm 34:2, 9, 17-20
John 3:31-36

THE MEAL OF LOVE
"Taste and see how good the Lord is." —Psalm 34:9

At each Mass, Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in the Eucharistic feast. The Church, through the voice of the psalmist, invites us to taste and see how good the Eucharistic Lord is (Ps 34:9). At the first Eucharist, the Last Supper, Jesus told His apostles and each of us: "I have greatly desired to eat this Passover with you" (Lk 22:15). The Mass is a marriage between heaven and earth, and the Eucharist is our wedding banquet (see Rv 19:7).

We approach the altar of the Lord as His spouse. In a very real sense, the Eucharist is a kiss from the Lord's lips to ours. The opening verse of the biblical book of the Song of Songs reads: "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth" (Sg 1:2). Have you ever approached the Eucharist with that verse on your lips? The Song of Songs is a book about the passionate love shared between the bride and groom. Jesus is the Groom, and we, the members of the Church, are His bride (see Mk 2:19; Eph 5:25; Rv 19:7). Too many times in my own life, my attention has been elsewhere as I receive the Body and Blood of my Spouse, the Lord Jesus, Who loves me with the deepest desire.

Jesus "greatly desires" to give each one of us a Eucharistic kiss. Let us receive Him with devotion and committed love, and return the kiss by our complete devotion, gratitude, trust, and obedience.

Prayer: Father, may my love for Your Son always exceed the love of any newlywed for their spouse on their wedding day.

Promise: God "does not ration His gift of the Spirit." —Jn 3:34

Praise: As bishop of Prague, St. Adalbert instituted clerical reforms. Those who resisted his efforts were successful in exiling him — twice. After his second exile he won a martyr's crown.

ONLY THE HUNGRY HAVE LIFE - One Bread, One Body, 04/22/2020

Wednesday, April 22, 2020,

Acts 5:17-26
Psalm 34:2-9
John 3:16-21

ONLY THE HUNGRY HAVE LIFE
"Look there! Those men you put in jail are standing over there in the temple, teaching the people." —Acts 5:25

An angel freed the apostles from jail and told them to teach about "this new life" (Acts 5:20). Christianity is new life, but Christians must be taught to live this life, thus, the great importance of teaching in the Christian life and regarding this life.

On the day Jesus rose from the dead, He spent hours in the afternoon and evening interpreting the Scriptures (Lk 24:27) and opening the apostles' minds to understand the Scriptures (Lk 24:45). At the first Christian Pentecost, Peter was preaching and teaching. Thereupon, the newborn Church "devoted themselves to the apostles' instruction and the communal life, to the breaking of bread and the prayers" (Acts 2:42). After an angel freed the apostles from jail and told them to keep teaching, they devoted themselves to "prayer and the ministry of the word" (Acts 6:4) by resisting temptations to lose their focus on teaching God's Word. They even filled Jerusalem with their teaching (Acts 5:28). Jesus was frequently called "Rabbi," meaning "Teacher" (see Jn 20:16), and the Church founded by Jesus is therefore a teaching Church.

In our spiritually anorexic culture of death, we must again desire to be taught and to teach God's Word. Otherwise, we will not know how to live the Christian life. Christianity not lived is an aberration. The Holy Spirit convicted the world of sin (Jn 16:8) and at Pentecost gave the early Church a hunger for God's Word. May He, this Easter season, also convict us of sin, crucify us to the world (see Gal 6:14), and give us a baptismal hunger for God's Word of life (see 1 Jn 1:1).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me everything (Jn 14:26) and guide me to all truth (Jn 16:13).

Promise: "God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." —Jn 3:17

Praise: Every day, Brent reads a Bible verse, reflects on how this Word applies to his life, and then says "Lord, Your will be done."

MAKE EASTER SPECIAL - One Bread, One Body, 04/21/2020

Tuesday, April 21, 2020, St. Anselm

Acts 4:32-37
Psalm 93:1-2, 5
John 3:7-15

MAKE EASTER SPECIAL
"With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus." —Acts 4:33

The Holy Spirit has told the Church to make the Easter season extra special by celebrating some of God's greatest works during Easter. For example, the first hours of Easter are glorified by the Baptisms, Confirmations, and First Communions of hundreds of thousands of catechumens throughout the world. We kick off the fifty-day Easter season with the Easter octave. We often have additional Confirmations and First Communions throughout Easter. We celebrate May as the month of Mary with rosaries and May crownings. We conclude the Easter season with the Pentecost novena and the earthshaking feast of Pentecost.

The Holy Spirit may also be telling you to join with the Church and make Easter extra special. Maybe you should be like Barnabas (Acts 4:36-37), sell your farm, give the proceeds to the Church, and be a missionary. Maybe you should get a new job or a new way of serving the Lord on the job. This may be the time the Lord is calling you and your spouse to conceive a child. Easter is prime time for deciding to be a priest, a religious, or a single person consecrated to the Lord. What better time to change your lifestyle or suffer persecution! Let's not be rash, but let's not be afraid to make big decisions which proclaim loud and clear that Jesus is risen from the dead.

Prayer: Father, teach me how to witness with power for the risen Jesus (see Acts 4:33).

Promise: "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in Him." —Jn 3:14-15

Praise: St. Anselm received the title "Father of Scholasticism" for his attempt to analyze and illuminate the truths of faith through the use of reason. He pleaded for mercy on the king who exiled him.

OUR ONLY NEED - One Bread, One Body, 04/20/2020

Monday, April 20, 2020,

Acts 4:23-31
Psalm 2:1-9
John 3:1-8

OUR ONLY NEED
"The place where they were gathered shook as they prayed. They were filled with the Holy Spirit." —Acts 4:31

When Peter and John were released from jail, they did not ask for:

  • future safety,
  • protection from their enemies,
  • justice after being wrongly arrested, or
  • an easier mission.

Rather, they asked to be filled again with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4; 4:31) and thereby receive "complete assurance," that is, holy boldness in witnessing for the risen Christ (Acts 4:29).

Let's not focus on the immensity of our problems and the human impossibility of dealing with them. It doesn't make that much difference whether we have to move a mountain or a mountain range. It's irrelevant whether we face thousands of enemies or only a few. Even if Satan himself is pulling out his heavy artillery, it isn't important. We must turn to the Spirit dwelling within us (see 1 Cor 3:16), Who can handle any degree of difficulty. We need only stir into flame the gift of the Spirit in our lives, for "the Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but rather One That makes us strong, loving, and wise" (2 Tm 1:6, 7).

Come, Holy Spirit! Give us Easter.

Prayer: Father, may I be baptized in and preoccupied with the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "The wind blows where it will. You hear the sound it makes but you do not know where it comes from, or where it goes. So it is with everyone begotten of the Spirit." —Jn 3:8

Praise: Tom prays regularly for discernment to know what comes from the Holy Spirit and what comes from the evil one.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES?
https://www.presentationministries.com/series/obob/obob-2020-4-19-en

"A week later, the disciples were once more in the room, and this time Thomas was with them. Despite the
locked doors, Jesus came." -John 20:26

The octave of the first Easter was disappointing and uneventful for the apostles. On the evening of the
day of Jesus' Resurrection, Jesus sent His apostles to proclaim His Gospel (Jn 20:21), but eight days
later they were still paralyzed by fear and behind locked doors (see Jn 20:26). You can see why Thomas,
not present a week earlier, did not believe that Jesus was risen from the dead. However, the Lord had
mercy on the apostles after they were unfaithful to Him so many times. He came to them once again and was
even willing to subject Himself to Thomas prodding His wounds (Jn 20:27).

Possibly the octave of Easter has been disappointing for you also. You may have even sinned against the
risen Lord. You may be concealing Jesus' Resurrection more than revealing it. Nevertheless, Jesus comes
to you once again with rays of mercy coming from His wounded heart.

Jesus gives us mercy primarily by commanding us to "receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22) and receive a new
Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is "the Spirit of truth" (Jn 16:13). He will make us true to the Lord and not
unfaithful. The Holy Spirit will produce the fruit of love in us (Gal 5:22), and we will stop our sinful
rejection of the Lord and our disobedience to Him. By Jesus' mercy and the power of the Holy Spirit, we
will be witnesses for the risen Christ and truly celebrate Easter. "Lord, have mercy. Come, Holy Spirit!"

Prayer: Father, make Divine Mercy Sunday one of the most important days of my life because of my love for
You.

Promise: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' instruction and the communal life." -Acts 2:42

Praise: God "saved us; not because of any righteous deeds we had done, but because of His mercy" (see Ti 3:5).

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to concrete
action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

WE CAN DO IT

We do indeed have the adequate means and framework so that beautiful words and good wishes may become an
action plan of substance that leads effectively to the eradication of hunger in our world. To this end we
need joint efforts, upright hearts, and persistent concern to firmly and resolutely make the other's
problems one's own.

"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"

There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end hunger, and this
ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by all peoples and all religious
persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at the heart of all initiatives and consists in
"doing to another what we would want done to ourselves."

THE DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES?
"A week later, the disciples were once more in the room, and this time Thomas was with them. Despite the locked doors, Jesus came." —John 20:26

The octave of the first Easter was disappointing and uneventful for the apostles. On the evening of the day of Jesus' Resurrection, Jesus sent His apostles to proclaim His Gospel (Jn 20:21), but eight days later they were still paralyzed by fear and behind locked doors (see Jn 20:26). You can see why Thomas, not present a week earlier, did not believe that Jesus was risen from the dead. However, the Lord had mercy on the apostles after they were unfaithful to Him so many times. He came to them once again and was even willing to subject Himself to Thomas prodding His wounds (Jn 20:27).

Possibly the octave of Easter has been disappointing for you also. You may have even sinned against the risen Lord. You may be concealing Jesus' Resurrection more than revealing it. Nevertheless, Jesus comes to you once again with rays of mercy coming from His wounded heart.

Jesus gives us mercy primarily by commanding us to "receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22) and receive a new Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is "the Spirit of truth" (Jn 16:13). He will make us true to the Lord and not unfaithful. The Holy Spirit will produce the fruit of love in us (Gal 5:22), and we will stop our sinful rejection of the Lord and our disobedience to Him. By Jesus' mercy and the power of the Holy Spirit, we will be witnesses for the risen Christ and truly celebrate Easter. "Lord, have mercy. Come, Holy Spirit!"

Prayer: Father, make Divine Mercy Sunday one of the most important days of my life because of my love for You.

Promise: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' instruction and the communal life." —Acts 2:42

Praise: God "saved us; not because of any righteous deeds we had done, but because of His mercy" (see Ti 3:5).

AMAZING GRACE - One Bread, One Body, 04/18/2020

Saturday, April 18, 2020, Easter Saturday

Acts 4:13-21
Psalm 118:1, 14-21
Mark 16:9-15

AMAZING GRACE
"The questioners were amazed." —Acts 4:13

People who have met the risen Christ are amazing. "Observing the self-assurance of Peter and John, and realizing that the speakers were uneducated men of no standing, the questioners were amazed" (Acts 4:13). Almost everyone must have been amazed that the risen Jesus "first appeared to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons" (Mk 16:9). How could Peter, who denied Christ three times, stand before thousands of people, preach fearlessly, and lead three thousand people to Christ at one time? Amazing! How could the persecutor Saul change into the Apostle Paul? He must have met the risen Christ on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3ff). Amazing grace!

What about Barnabas selling his farm and donating the money from the sale to the Church? (Acts 4:37) That's amazing, especially for people who think tithing is a big commitment. When Stephen was stoned to death, we can't help but be amazed that he forgave his enemies (Acts 7:60).

One of the most amazing things of all was that Gentiles, such as Cornelius and his family, received the Holy Spirit and thus were obviously included in God's kingdom (Acts 10:44). This was unthinkable to the Jews after centuries of strict separation from Gentiles. The Lord even raised up a church of Gentiles, the church of Antioch (Acts 11:20ff). Absolutely amazing! The amazing people who have met the risen Christ prove how utterly amazing is His Resurrection from the dead.

Prayer: Risen Jesus, so transform my lifestyle that others are amazed at me.

Promise: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation." —Mk 16:15

Praise: The whole Andrews family came into the Church on Easter.

"BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL" (SEE MT 5:7) - One Bread, One Body,04/17/2020

Friday, April 17, 2020, Easter Friday

Acts 4:1-12
Psalm 118:1-2, 4, 22-27
John 21:1-14

"BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL" (SEE MT 5:7)
"Jesus came over, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This marked the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after being raised from the dead." —John 21:13-14

In the Catholic community throughout the world, this coming Sunday is called "Divine Mercy Sunday." Many people prepare for this special day by praying for nine days beginning Good Friday, the day of ultimate mercy, the day on which we especially focus on Jesus' saving death. Jesus is "rich in mercy" (Eph 2:4). "His mercy endures forever" (Ps 136:1ff). Jesus is all-merciful.

Simon Peter is a striking example of God's mercy. He said one of the worst things you can say to Jesus by denying the necessity of the cross (Mt 16:22). Yet the Lord mercifully continued to teach and serve Peter. After bluntly denying that he would deny Christ (Lk 22:33), Peter promptly denied Him three times right before His crucifixion (Lk 22:61). However, the Lord forgave Peter again and again. The risen Jesus even came to Peter on the morning of the Resurrection (Lk 24:34) and appeared to Peter with the apostles several other times. Then after Peter had met with the risen Christ at least three times, Peter decided to go back into the fishing business (Jn 21:3ff), although Jesus had called him out of fishing for fish to be fishing for men (see Mt 4:19).

Nonetheless, Jesus had mercy on Peter, forgave him again and again, gave him the Holy Spirit, chose him to preach at the first Christian Pentecost, and made him the first pope, as well as a missionary and a martyr. Jesus gave Peter inexhaustible mercies. Be merciful as Jesus is.

Prayer: Father, make me a missionary of mercy.

Promise: "There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved." —Acts 4:12

Praise: "This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it" (Ps 118:24).

HIS STANDARDS AND HIS POWER - One Bread, One Body, 04/16/2020

Thursday, April 16, 2020, Easter Thursday

Acts 3:11-26
Psalm 8:2, 5-9
Luke 24:35-48

HIS STANDARDS AND HIS POWER
"God raised Him from the dead, and we are His witnesses." —Acts 3:15

If we are not Resurrection-witnesses like Mary Magdalene and the post-Pentecost apostles, we should not make excuses, but rather admit that being a powerful witness for the risen Christ is normal Christianity (see Acts 4:33; 3:15; Lk 24:48-49).

To be a Resurrection-witness, we must simply repent, renew our Baptisms, and receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). We may think we have already done this. Yet have we repented and converted by God's standards? (see Acts 3:19)

Most of us know that we must repent of doing things which are wrong for everyone, such as adultery, theft, lying, etc. However, each of us has a special calling from God. It may not be sinful for you to drink a beer, watch a TV program, buy a certain item, or have a certain lifestyle, but these things may be wrong for someone else. We tend to jump to the conclusion that, if something is all right for some people, then it is okay for me. This denies our uniqueness and often leads to a watered-down, pleasure-seeking aberration of normal Christianity.

Also, we can commit sins of omission. The Lord commands us through our consciences to go beyond the minimum (see 2 Cor 3:6). However, we tend to falsely reason that if other people are not expected to do certain things, why should we?

Keep denying and extending yourself until you are witnessing freely and powerfully for the risen Lord. Then you will have repented and converted by the Lord's standards.

Prayer: Father, make me a normal Christian.

Promise: "Then He opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures." —Lk 24:45

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, victorious Lamb of God!
