WHITEWASHED
"These are the ones who have survived the great period of trial; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." —Revelation 7:14

Some saints led very sinful lives.  When they encountered the Lord, they realized the Lord’s holiness and their own sinfulness. They confessed their sins, repented deeply, and changed their lives permanently.

Some saints were called to the ultimate witness: laying down their lives for Jesus in martyrdom. “They were stoned, sawed in two, put to death at sword’s point” (Heb 11:37). “All of these died in faith” (Heb 11:13) because “they were searching for a better, a heavenly home” (Heb 11:16).

Some saints lived obscure lives of faithfulness and holiness. They died to themselves, picked up their cross, and followed daily in the footsteps of Jesus. As disciples of Jesus, they rose early to pray (Mk 1:35) and prayed long into the night (Lk 6:12). Their intercession and redemptive suffering stopped wars, brought healing and reconciliation, and built up the kingdom of God.

Some saints are still under construction. Some saints are those of you reading this page. You endure periods of trial (Rv 7:14), but live lives of “hope based on” Jesus (1 Jn 3:3). You have given your lives to Jesus and have been washed clean in the waters of Baptism and in “the blood of the Lamb” (Rv 7:14). Saints alive, praise Jesus now and forever with the communion of saints!

Prayer: Father, may my life result in many thousands of people praising You forever in heaven.

Promise: "Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is great in heaven." —Mt 5:12

Praise: Today we salute the canonized, the beatified, and the venerable. Each honored God through heroic virtue and charity. All holy men and women, pray for us!

ALL OR NOTHING
"The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today." —Deuteronomy 6:4-6

When you ask people if they’ve given their lives to Jesus, they say “yes.” When you ask if they evangelize, tithe, or read the Bible, they often say “no,” as if evangelizing, tithing, or knowing the Bible were not essential parts of our commitment to Christ.

This does not mean we must be perfect in fulfilling our commitment to Christ, but it does mean that we must make a total commitment. The first commandment is: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mk 12:30). The Lord says the word “all” four times. But many Christians seem to be surprised when you tell them “all” means all.

Christianity is all or nothing. Jesus died on the cross and gave everything for us that we might give everything to Him. If He’s not Lord of all, He’s not Lord at all. Jesus plans to save our entire lives and not parts of them. His kingdom can be purchased only by our “all” (Mt 13:44-46).

Prayer: Jesus, I give You all of me.

Promise: "Therefore He is always able to save those who approach God through Him, since He forever lives to make intercession for them." —Heb 7:25

Praise: "The city had no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb" (Rv 21:23). Risen Jesus, Lamb of God, You brighten my path.

A "KNOW IT ALL"
"I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery." —Romans 11:25

Sometimes we feel like despairing because life seems to make no sense. We wonder if God is there or if He knows what He’s doing. Nevertheless, despite severe disruptions due to our sins, and those of others, the Lord has everything under control. For instance, He knows that large numbers of Jewish people will be saved after the full number of Gentiles has entered into God’s kingdom (Rm 11:25-26). This will mean “riches for the Gentile world” (Rm 11:12). These may be spiritual riches in that the Church will grow rich in love, faith, and holiness. Thus, the Lord will “present to Himself a glorious Church, holy and immaculate, without stain or wrinkle or anything of that sort” (Eph 5:27). These will be some of the developments prior to Jesus’ final coming.

The Lord points out all this to assure us that He knows what is going on and what will go on. The Lord has a wonderful plan; despite our sins, His plan will be fulfilled in detail. Therefore, we should not despair when we see tragedies. The Lord is bigger than all our problems. He loves us, and nothing can stop Him from showing His love to us.

Let us repent, fix our eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2), and believe that His plan will be fulfilled no matter how many people try to disrupt it. He is Lord, and He is Love (1 Jn 4:16).

Prayer: Father, because of my faith in Your providence may I rejoice always (see Phil 4:4).

Promise: "For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled and he who humbles himself shall be exalted." —Lk 14:11

Praise: Estranged both from her ex-husband and her children, Maria knows that her Father's plan for her family will be fulfilled.

MISSION SUNDAY REVISITED
"I could even wish to be separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen the Israelites." —Romans 9:3-4

What causes you “great grief and constant pain”? (Rm 9:2) Paul’s grief and pain were due to the fact that not all the Jewish people had accepted Jesus as their Messiah, Lord, and God.

Why would you make yourself a slave — even “the slave of all”? Some people make themselves slaves to alcohol, nicotine, other drugs, money, pornography, their businesses, fears, or anxieties. Paul decided to be “the slave of all so as to win over as many as possible” to Jesus (1 Cor 9:19). All that he did was “for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor 9:23).

What are you compelled to do? What is the driving force in your life? Paul was “under compulsion” to preach the Gospel (1 Cor 9:16).

A few days ago, we celebrated World Mission Sunday. What difference has it made in your thoughts, motives, actions, and life?

Prayer: Father, give me the faith and love to zealously share my faith in You.

Promise: Jesus "took the man, healed him, and sent him on his way." —Lk 14:4

Praise: Fr. William decided in Junior College to become a missionary.

CONSUMED BY ZEAL (see Jn 2:17) - One Bread, One Body, 10/28/2021

CONSUMED BY ZEAL (see Jn 2:17)
"You form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the Capstone." —Ephesians 2:20

Jesus selected twelve Jewish men to be His apostles. One of these is St. Simon, who was specifically identified as a Zealot (Lk 6:15), perhaps to distinguish him from Simon Peter, the leader among the apostles. Scholars debate whether Simon was a terrorist involved in inciting riots against the Romans, or was instead a religious Jew zealously devoted to the law of Israel. Simon certainly was passionate.

St. Simon could appreciate the zeal of Jesus. He was present when Jesus cleansed the Temple with a whip of cords, driving out the money changers and animals to be sold for sacrifices. The apostles at this scene “recalled the words of Scripture: ‘Zeal for Your house consumes Me’ ” (Jn 2:17; see also Ps 69:10). It’s likely Simon was attracted to the zeal of Jesus, yet he had to sit at Jesus’ feet and be transformed into an apostle. Simon’s zeal was important for spreading the Good News, yet he needed to grow in godly wisdom first (see Rm 10:2; 2 Cor 9:2).

Zeal is prevalent in today’s culture. A simple look at the “comments” section in any social media post will show an abundance of zeal by those who proclaim their opinions. “Without knowledge even zeal is not good” (Prv 19:2). Zeal can be a good trait if we place it at the feet of Jesus and allow Him to transform it as He wills. Simon gave his zeal to Jesus and now is a part of the foundation of the Church (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14). With St. Simon, let us ask the Lord for wisdom and the necessary zeal to spread it.

Prayer: Father, burn away all my apathy and replace it with godly zeal. Let zeal for Your house consume and transform me.

Promise: "In [Jesus] you are being built into this temple, to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit." —Eph 2:22

Praise: "Persevere in God's love, and welcome the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ which leads to eternal life" (Jude 21).

THE PRAYER OF A LIFETIME
"The Spirit intercedes for the saints as God Himself wills." —Romans 8:27

For more than twenty-six years, Pope St. John Paul II called us to great, growing, and intense prayer (The Redeemer of Man, 22). The Pope taught: “A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and Lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. Jesus Himself has shown us by His own example that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil (cf Mt 4:1-11). As He taught His disciples, some demons cannot be driven out except in this way (cf Mk 9:29)” (The Gospel of Life, 100). There is “the necessity of praying always and not losing heart” (Lk 18:1).

How can we obey the Lord, the Church, and the Pope and pray the greatest prayer of our lives? We have trouble watching one hour with Jesus (see Mt 26:40). How can we pray always with love and power? Jesus’ first followers were pitiful in their lack of prayer until they received the Holy Spirit. “The Spirit too helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us” (Rm 8:26).

When Advent begins next month, ask Jesus to renew your Baptism and Confirmation — to baptize and immerse you in the Holy Spirit (Mk 1:8). Then you will pray in the Spirit (see 1 Cor 14:15; Eph 6:18; Jude 20).

Prayer: Father, make me docile to the Spirit and powerful in prayer.

Promise: "Try to come in through the narrow door. Many, I tell you, will try to enter and be unable." —Lk 13:24

Praise: Thomas leads his family in daily prayer as his parents did for him.

GROANERS
"Yes, we know that all creation groans and is in agony even until now." —Romans 8:22

After the first sin was committed, a groan was heard for the first time. Adam groaned in his labors; Eve groaned in her labor pains (see Gn 3:16, 19). Both groaned when they saw the first dead body ever: the body of their son Abel, murdered by his brother Cain (Gn 4:8). This groaning grew increasingly worse until the whole world groaned (Rm 8:22).

Eventually, there came a Man Who groaned like the rest of us, but also unlike the rest of us. His name was Jesus. Like us, He groaned because of His sufferings and those of others. Unlike us, when Jesus groaned, things got better instead of worse. For example, Jesus groaned and said “ ‘Ephphatha!’ (that is, ‘Be opened!’),” and at once a deaf-mute could speak and hear (Mk 7:34-35). When Jesus groaned, it was different. Finally, He groaned when He died on the cross (see Mk 15:37). This resulted in Jesus’ Resurrection, His Ascension, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit, like Jesus, groans in a different way. When He groans, He makes intercession for us (Rm 8:26). This results in conversion, forgiveness, repentance, healing, freedom, and new life. “We ourselves, although we have the Spirit as first fruits” (Rm 8:23), continue to groan inwardly. However, it is different now. “The sufferings of the present” seem “to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us” (Rm 8:18).

Prayer: Father, may I groan with hope.

Promise: The kingdom of God "is like mustard seed which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a large shrub and the birds of the air nested in its branches." —Lk 13:19

Praise: Bedridden Marsha can no longer speak, yet she still prays in faith.

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT
"If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live." —Romans 8:13

If we live according to the flesh, that is, according to our fallen human nature, we will die, that is, be damned in hell. It is therefore of supreme importance to be freed from the slavery of our fallen nature. We put to death the prideful, self-centered deeds of our fallen nature by the work of the Holy Spirit. Thus, we must be born again of water and Spirit (Jn 3:5), and we must live in the Spirit to live our Baptisms. “The flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; the two are directly opposed” (Gal 5:17). “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s lead” (Gal 5:24-25).

Our life in the Spirit is so precious. It is literally a matter of life and death, of salvation or damnation. Jesus prayed that we would be guarded from the evil one (Jn 17:15). We must be vigilant to guard our life in the Spirit from sin and occasions of sin, especially the raw sewage in much of our modern media.

Moreover, our life in the Spirit is so precious that we must make it a priority to nourish it through Mass, Confession, Bible study, Christian community life, and constant prayer.

Our baptized life in the Spirit is our lifeline to the Lord. Protect, nourish, and live fully life in the Spirit.

Prayer: Father, may I never quench (1 Thes 5:19) or grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:30).

Promise: "Should not this daughter of Abraham here who has been in the bondage of Satan for eighteen years have been released from her shackles on the sabbath?" —Lk 13:16

HE’S JUST PITIFUL - One Bread, One Body, 10/24/2021

HE'S JUST PITIFUL
"Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!" —Mark 10:47

Bartimaeus was blind. Many people had no pity on him, but instead scolded him to keep quiet and out of sight (Mk 10:48). Jesus had pity on Bartimaeus and healed him (Mk 10:52).

A leper was treated without pity by the masses. He had to keep out of the way, calling out, “Unclean, unclean!” (Lv 13:45) Jesus saw him, was “moved with pity,” touched him, and healed him (Mk 1:41-42).

A vast crowd was hungry for the Word of God. Jesus “pitied them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them at great length” (Mk 6:34). Then He fed them with a miraculous multiplication of loaves and fish.

What about you? Are you sick, hungry, out of a job, without sufficient housing or money, rejected, forgotten, hurting, unloved, or persecuted? Are you “in tears”? (Ps 126:5) Cry out with Bartimaeus: “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” (Mk 10:47)

Jesus is the same today as He was in the Gospels (Heb 13:8). He is full of pity, mercy, and compassion for you (see Ps 103:8). You may be in a desert now (Ps 126:4), but Jesus can turn even the driest desert into a place of refreshment and rejoicing (Ps 126:1-6; Jer 31:9).

Jesus is looking at you, full of pity and love. He asks you: “What do you want Me to do for you?” (Mk 10:51) Jump up and come to Jesus (Mk 10:50). Ask Him to heal you and let you see Him as your Lord.

Prayer: Jesus...

Promise: "Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown, they shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves." —Ps 126:6

Praise: "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Alleluia" (Ps 150:6). Lord Jesus, Your Resurrection gives us access to heavenly glory.

A CONDEMNED BUILDING
"There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus." —Romans 8:1

We often feel condemned or about to be condemned. In these moments, we feel as if people are judging us, because they are. We are afraid of not being accepted and even rejected. We know that people’s love for us is conditional, and sooner or later we won’t meet their conditions. We have the haunting fear we will be condemned not only in this life but for all eternity.

The Good News is: “There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rm 8:1). Even if a mother should forsake her child, our heavenly Father will never forsake us (Is 49:15). Jesus will never reject anyone who comes to Him (Jn 6:37). As He did for the adulteress, Jesus will disperse the crowd condemning us. He will ask: “Where did they all disappear to? Has no one condemned you?” (Jn 8:10) He will say: “Nor do I condemn you” (Jn 8:11). “I will never desert you, nor will I forsake you” (Heb 13:5).

Jesus’ love is unchangeable and  unconditional. Only in Him can we have absolute security. “God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him” (Jn 3:17).

Prayer: Jesus, people are picking up stones to throw at me. Protect me by surrounding me with Your love.

Promise: "Sir, leave it another year, while I hoe around it and manure it; then perhaps it will bear fruit." —Lk 13:8-9

Praise: St. John of Capistrano was trained by St. Bernardine of Siena, a concrete example of the communion of saints in action. St. John preached in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, and Poland. At age 70, St. John of Capistrano led soldiers into victory against invaders.

THE ONLY HOPE
"Who can free me?" —Romans 7:24

Our human nature is fallen, wounded, and weakened because of the sin of our first parents, that is, original sin. Our desires, intentions, and feelings lack power (Rm 7:18). “What happens is that I do, not the good I will to do, but the evil I do not intend” (Rm 7:19). Our wills also are incapacitated. We do what is against our wills (Rm 7:20). “This means that even though I want to do what is right, a law that leads to wrongdoing is always ready at hand” (Rm 7:21). Moreover, our bodies are “under the power of death” (Rm 7:24).

Because our emotions, wills, and bodies are out of order, we are in an impossible situation. We are prisoners (Rm 7:23), wretched men and women (Rm 7:24) in need of freedom (Rm 7:24). Others cannot help us because they are in the same condition. We appear doomed to damnation and everlasting isolation, loneliness, and alienation from God.

“Who can free” us? (Rm 7:24) “All praise to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Rm 7:25) Jesus is our only Savior and our only Hope. Thank Jesus forever for freeing and saving us through His death and Resurrection. Have faith in Jesus. Love Jesus. Worship Jesus. Live completely for Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I love people enough to tell them that Jesus is our only Hope.

Promise: "I am Yours; save me, for I have sought Your precepts." —Ps 119:94

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II lived through the Nazi occupation of Poland and under the heavy yoke of post-World War II Communism. The Holy Spirit used him to help defeat both.

"SLOW MOTION"
"How I wish the blaze were ignited!" —Luke 12:49

Jesus came to light a fire on the earth (Lk 12:49). He was in anguish until He had completed His Father’s plan (Lk 12:50). Jesus loved us so much He wanted everyone to be saved as soon as possible. Considering Jesus’ intensity, He must be upset by our lethargy. He’s been waiting for almost two thousand years for us to get ready for His second and final coming.

We have slowed down God’s plan of salvation by our sins and apathy. We must repent, intercede, and evangelize so all will hear the Gospel (Mt 24:14) and Jesus can come back for a holy, immaculate, and glorious Church (Eph 5:27). If Christians begin to have the intensity of Christ, God’s plan will be restored to the speed which He intended.

God’s time is fast. He has come to light a fire on the earth. Let’s repent of sleepwalking and slow motion so we can run the race for Jesus (2 Tm 4:7).

Prayer: "May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, and may charity be the root and foundation of your life" (Eph 3:17).

Promise: "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." —Rm 6:23

Praise: Peter was gradually drawn to Christ in the Eucharist and became Catholic.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS - One Bread, One Body, 10/20/2021

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
"When much has been given a man, much will be required of him." —Luke 12:48

Many of you reading this book have accepted Jesus as Lord of your lives and have been filled with the Holy Spirit. You are children of God. Many of you know, love, and live God’s Word. Many also celebrate Mass and receive Holy Communion daily, or as often as possible. You are greatly blessed (Mt 13:16). God became a man to die for you. You share in His Resurrection. The Trinity lives within you. You are a member of Christ’s Body. Because of your faith, you can do greater by far than even Jesus did (Jn 14:12).

We are not only privileged but also responsible. “More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted” (Lk 12:48). Because of what the Lord has revealed to us and done in our lives, we deserve a severe punishment if we fail to give as a gift what He has given to us (Lk 12:47-48; Mt 10:8). We are rightly held to a stricter account (see Jas 3:1).

The Lord must demand much more from us than non-Christians because we are His mouth, hands and feet — members of His Body. Because He wants all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4), He must insist on our spreading the Good News of His death and Resurrection. The Lord must make strict demands on those being saved because He greatly desires to save the lost.

Prayer: Father, by Your grace may I meet Your expectations.

Promise: "Thanks be to God, though once you were slaves of sin, you sincerely obeyed that rule of teaching which was imparted to you; freed from your sin, you became slaves of justice." —Rm 6:17-18

Praise: St. Paul of the Cross founded the Congregation of the Passion (the Passionists). In addition to vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, they spread the memory of Christ's passion among the faithful.

I HOPE SO - One Bread, One Body, 10/19/2021

I HOPE SO
Grace reigns "by way of justice leading to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord." —Romans 5:21

Christians have more reason to be hopeful than any people who have ever lived. We are no longer afraid of death (Ps 23:4, RSV-CE), for Jesus has risen and death has lost its sting (1 Cor 15:55). “Death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Cor 15:54). Jesus has won the irreversible and final victory. He is seated on His throne, and He is merely waiting for His enemies to be placed beneath His feet (Heb 10:12-13).

Therefore, we who are disciples of Jesus Christ are a people of hope. Although we notice “the increase of sin” (Rm 5:20), we are certain by faith that “grace has far surpassed” sin’s increase (Rm 5:20). “In hope we were saved” (Rm 8:24), and “this hope will not leave us disappointed, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us” (Rm 5:5). “Should anyone ask you the reason for this hope of yours, be ever ready to reply” (1 Pt 3:15).

Prayer: Father, make me a beacon of hope. Give me "a future full of hope" (Jer 29:11).

Promise: "It will go well with those servants whom the master finds wide-awake on his return. I tell you, he will put on an apron, seat them at table, and proceed to wait on them." —Lk 12:37

Praise: St. Isaac Jogues negotiated peace with his kidnappers, the Iroquois. Saints Isaac Jogues, John de Brébeuf, and their companions were the first martyrs of the North American continent officially recognized by the Church.

COOL HAND LUKE
"I have no one with me but Luke." —2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke compiled his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles not to describe how good things were in the early Church but to address how bad things were becoming after the first generation of Christianity. The Christian community got bogged down with internal problems and was no longer motivated to evangelize. The Church was lukewarm (Rv 3:16). Luke composed his Gospel and Acts of the Apostles to change this.

When things go wrong and discouragement begins to set in, it’s hard to be the only one motivated and immune to the prevailing apathy. However, Luke moved when no one felt like moving, tried when not many were trying, hoped when the stench of despair polluted the spiritual atmosphere. We likewise live in a lukewarm, apathetic environment. We need Luke to show us we can break free from the inertia of sin and the paralysis of selfishness.

The harvest is rich, but the workers continue to be few (Lk 10:2). We need Luke to give us hope, give us a jump-start, and proclaim: “The reign of God is at hand” (Lk 10:9).

Prayer: Father, may I stop complaining and start believing, loving, and working.

Promise: "Be on your way and remember: I am sending you as lambs in the midst of wolves." —Lk 10:3

Praise: "Luke, our dear physician, sends you greetings" (Col 4:14). As St. Paul foreshadowed, the Catholic Church honors St. Luke as the patron of physicians. St. Luke, pray for our healing!

GOOD AND BAD SUFFERING
"Through His suffering, My Servant shall justify many, and their guilt He shall bear." —Isaiah 53:11

The Lord removes some sufferings from our lives to make room for other sufferings which are redemptive. He heals us to free us to be vulnerable and exposed to hurt. He gives us the grace to love ourselves, so we have courage to be hated and persecuted for the sake of the Gospel (see 2 Tm 1:8). He blesses us with self-acceptance and a good self-image so we will be able to suffer rejection and contempt.

Jesus wants to forgive and heal us, and thereby deliver us from all useless suffering. “He went about doing good works and healing all who were in the grip of the devil” (Acts 10:38). Jesus has declared war on sickness, suffering, and bondage. “It was to destroy the devil’s works that the Son of God revealed Himself” (1 Jn 3:8).

This does not mean that suffering has no part in God’s plan of salvation. Suffering in the pattern of Jesus’ death is good, redemptive, and to be sought after in prayer (Phil 3:10). This suffering is for the kingdom (2 Thes 1:5) and fills up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His Body, the Church (Col 1:24).

Prayer: Jesus, I ask to suffer and know how to suffer in the pattern of Your death (Phil 3:10).

Promise: "For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but One Who was tempted in every way that we are, yet never sinned." —Heb 4:15

Praise: "Indeed, this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day" (Jn 6:40). Praise Jesus!

A SPIRITED RESPONSE - One Bread, One Body, 10/16/2021

A SPIRITED RESPONSE
"The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said." —Luke 12:12

There are four passages in the Gospels in which Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will put words of wisdom in our mouths that cannot be opposed (Mt 10:17-20; Mk 13:9-11; Lk 12:11-12; 21:12-15). In each passage, the context is that a disciple has been involuntarily detained to be put on trial for their witness to Jesus. Jesus promises us: “In that hour, say what you are inspired to say. It will not be yourselves speaking but the Holy Spirit” (Mk 13:11).

We may never be arrested and brought to trial for our faith in Jesus, but as disciples of Jesus, we will face persecution (2 Tm 3:12). The world will attempt to intimidate us and prevent us from speaking about Jesus (see Acts 5:28, 40). “Do not let them intimidate you” (Mt 10:26).

If we believe Jesus when He promises that the Holy Spirit will speak through us, we will be bold and fearless witnesses. We will count our trials as pure joy (Jas 1:2), for we know Jesus will give us words and wisdom which cannot be opposed by our persecutors (Lk 21:15). Persecution will only serve to further exalt Jesus.

Therefore, “resolve not to worry about your defense beforehand” (Lk 21:14). Instead, spend your time growing in faith, for “all depends on faith” (Rm 4:16). “Live in accord with the Spirit” every day (Gal 5:16), so that it will be second nature for you to “follow the Spirit’s lead” (Gal 5:25).

Prayer: Jesus, may I spend every day of the rest of my life publicly acknowledging You in some way as Lord and Savior.

Promise: "He remembers forever His covenant." —Ps 105:8

Praise: St. Margaret Mary was graced to receive some of the most profound private revelations in Church history — visions of Jesus and His Sacred Heart.

VALUABLES
"You are worth more than a flock of sparrows." —Luke 12:7

So many of us have safety deposit boxes and even safes in our homes where we place all of our valuables to protect them from theft and fire. However, some valuables cannot be protected in that way. One example is our faith. Because of Abraham’s belief, God put him into the right and proper relationship with Him (Rm 4:6). He pronounced blessings upon him (Rm 4:7-8) and bequeathed to him a legacy of a great land and a multitude of descendants. Still the most valuable treasure to Abraham was his faith.

Abraham could not work out his salvation — he had to believe God’s Word first, then he was credited with justice (Rm 4:5). Sparrows counted for little among the ancients and yet God knows the price and value of each individual sparrow (Lk 12:6), for everything He created has value in His eyes. Whatever men and women do, God knows what they do and knows the price their activity merits, whether good or bad. True riches can only be found in God and not in man-made activities or values. God, the Creator of all, holds all in the palm of His hand (Rv 1:18, 20). Our values must be centered upon our believing Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus Christ is the King of kings (see Rv 19:16). Jesus Christ is truly God’s Son.

Prayer: Father, let me never forget my worth as a human being and as a Christian in Your eyes. Your strong hand upholds me.

Promise: "Blest are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered over." —Rm 4:7

Praise: "In light of heaven, the worst suffering on earth will be seen to be no more serious than one night in an inconvenient hotel" (St. Teresa of Jesus). St. Teresa shared the gifts God gave her with her Order, Popes and the whole Church.

THE BLOOD THAT JESUS SHED FOR ME
"Now the justice of God has been manifested apart from the law, even though both law and prophets bear witness to it — that justice of God which works through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe." —Romans 3:21-22

Prophets had been murdered for thousands of years, “from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah” (Lk 11:51). Yet not one of these murders was atoned for over all this time. Jesus said: “This generation will have to account for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world” (Lk 11:50). All the people in the world do not have the power to atone for one sin. Yet, all the sins of all time were atoned for by one Man, Jesus (Rm 5:15). Jesus alone accounted for all sins. One drop of His blood did what centuries of animal sacrifices and millions of good works could never do (Heb 9:14; 10:4).

“All men are now undeservedly justified by the gift of God, through the redemption wrought in Christ Jesus. Through His blood, God made Him the means of expiation for all who believe” (Rm 3:24-25). Therefore, “worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and praise!” (Rv 5:12) For “with Your blood You purchased for God men of every race and tongue, of every people and nation” (Rv 5:9).

"THE FINGER OF GOD" (Lk 11:20)
"...but will not lift a finger to lighten them." —Luke 11:46

Jesus does not show us our sins to condemn us, but to save us (Jn 3:17). He illuminates our sins to show us the damage they have caused, and also to show us how we cannot erase that damage by our own efforts. Only Jesus can pay that price (Is 26:18; Ps 49:8-9). We must allow Him to pay it.

Jesus’ standards are even higher than those of the Pharisees and the scholars of the law (Mt 5:18). Jesus is most definitely not lax on sin; He takes sin so seriously that He was crucified for our sins. The difference between Jesus and the Pharisees isn’t that Jesus lowers the demands of holiness. It is that, with Jesus, carrying the demands of holiness is a burden that is easy and light (Mt 11:29). Also, unlike the Pharisees, Jesus does much more than lift a finger to help those burdened down by sin (Lk 11:46). He bears, or carries, our burdens (Is 53:4). He carried our cross even before it was ours.

The original Greek text of 1 Cor 13:4 that is translated “love is kind” means “love bears one another’s burdens.” Jesus is love (1 Jn 4:8, 16) and He graces us to live out the high standards of holiness. Give your life to Jesus and let Him carry your burdens. “Trust in Him at all times” (Ps 62:9).

Prayer: Jesus, I accept Your yoke (Mt 11:29-30). Thank You for walking beside me and carrying my burden. I am all Yours.

Promise: "There will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who has done good." —Rm 2:10

NOT ASHAMED - One Bread, One Body, 10/12/2021

NOT ASHAMED
"I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God leading everyone who believes in it to salvation." —Romans 1:16

The Good News, the Gospel, is the power of God for the salvation of all who believe it (Rm 1:16). St. Jerome stated: “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism, 133). Many today are ashamed of the gospel. So the gospel is banned from public schools, workplaces, politically correct environments, secular media, social media, and elsewhere. People are ashamed of the teaching of the gospel in regard to:

  • sex as occurring only between one man and one woman in marriage,
  • divorce (Mt 5:31-32; 19:3ff),
  • poverty and wealth (Lk 6:20; 12:16-21),
  • sin and holiness (Mt 5:21-30),
  • Jesus alone being the Way to salvation (Jn 14:6; Acts 4:12),
  • mercy for sinners, “haters,” and enemies (see Lk 15:1-32),
  • radical life-giving compassion for the poor, marginalized, and oppressed (Mt 19:21).

These are only a sampling of the challenging teachings of the gospel. Here’s a test to determine whether or not you are ashamed of the gospel. Would you speak up to defend the teachings of the gospel when they are ridiculed at your next office party, school assembly, or public gathering? Consider the words of Jesus: “If a man is ashamed of Me and My doctrine, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory” (Lk 9:26). Do you feel ashamed of the gospel?  If so, ask Jesus to replace that shame with joy and gladness.

Prayer: Father, change my heart. May I identify so totally with the Gospel that my face radiates the joy of the Gospel.

Promise: "If you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." —Lk 11:41

LIVING TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL - One Bread, One Body, 10/11/2021

LIVING TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL
"Through Him we have been favored with apostleship, that we may spread His name." —Romans 1:5

Paul, “set apart to proclaim the gospel of God” (Rm 1:1), wrote to the Romans to prepare them to be a home-base for future evangelism in Spain (Rm 15:24, 28). Paul was always thinking of reaching more people for Christ. He would use a courtroom as a forum for preaching the Gospel (Acts 26:1ff). He even stopped to convert the jailer during a jailbreak (Acts 16:28ff). Paul repeatedly risked his life to preach the Gospel (2 Cor 11:23ff). He was single-hearted; evangelism was the only thing on his mind. He would pay any price to win to Christ as many as possible (1 Cor 9:19).

We have seven more weeks left in the Church year. In the last forty-five weeks, how many people have we tried to lead to the Lord? The fields are ripe for a great harvest (Jn 4:35), but the workers are still few (Mt 9:37). If we’re not evangelizing, are we evangelized? Let’s repent of not sharing the Gospel and make the rest of this year the greatest evangelistic drive of our lives.

Prayer: Father, give me a new Pentecost that leads to a new evangelization.

Promise: "She came from the farthest corner of the world to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, but you have a greater than Solomon here." —Lk 11:31

Praise: Pope St. John XXIII called for a renewal of both the clergy and the laity by convoking the Second Vatican Council in 1962. Holy Spirit, come renew Your Church (see Ps 104:30).

LOVING GOD IS NOT ENOUGH
"Jesus looked at him with love and told him, 'There is one thing more you must do.' " —Mark 10:21

The Lord’s will is not only that we love Him but that we love Him with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength, and all our minds (Lk 10:27). It is relatively easy to give ninety-five percent, even ninety-eight percent, of our lives to the Lord. However, the great decision and the fiercest battle is about giving that last percent or two of our lives to God. That last percent is our all, the “one thing” more we must do (Mk 10:21).

Your one thing more may be to “sell what you have and give to the poor” (Mk 10:21). Other examples of “one thing more” are:

  • forgiving (Eph 4:32),
  • loving an enemy (Mt 5:44),
  • admitting an addiction and taking it to the Lord,
  • repenting and going to Confession,
  • deciding to stop contracepting,
  • starting to evangelize,
  • tithing,
  • serving and washing the feet of others (Jn 13:5),
  • saying “yes” to a particular vocation, and
  • entering into Christian community.

At this moment, Jesus is looking at you with love. Give Him the “one thing more.” Give Him all your love.

Prayer: Father, I am all Yours.

Promise: "Indeed, God's word is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword." —Heb 4:12

Praise: "Tell me, if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how is it that some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead?" (1 Cor 15:12) Risen Jesus, illuminate my mind!

"DECIDE TODAY" (Jos 24:15)
"Crowd upon crowd in the valley of decision; for near is the day of the Lord in the valley of decision." —Joel 4:14

In today’s first Mass reading, God invites the nations to gather in the valley of decision. He tells the nations, in effect: “Bring up your weapons of war; I want to see all your military might” (see Jl 4:9). The nations think they will be fighting; in reality, they are gathering to be judged.

In the valley of decision, the angels apply the sickle to the harvest at the end of time. There is to be a reckoning, a Judgment Day. Jesus is coming again. We don’t know the day or the hour (Mk 13:32). Therefore, we must be ready for His coming now. “Now is the acceptable time!” (2 Cor 6:2)

Joel is prophesying: “This is it!” The judgment in the valley of decision approaches. There is a real eternal damnation (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1022). There is a real, eternal heaven and hell (Catechism, 1023, 1033).

Accordingly, what will you decide in the valley of decision? “Decide today” (Jos 24:15). “Why delay, then?” (Acts 22:16) We’ve heard the Word of God on this subject.  Choose Jesus, “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25).

Prayer: Father, if I don't decide today for You, I may never decide for You in the future. Help me to accept the grace You are giving me this moment. I give my life to You today, tomorrow, and forever.

Promise: "Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it." —Lk 11:28
