"THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH" (Jn 15:26)
"I consecrate Myself for their sakes now, that they may be consecrated in truth." —John 17:19

Today is the sixth day of the Pentecost Novena. Both the first reading and the Gospel reading are concerned with truth. St. Paul warns his disciples that men will distort the truth and attempt to lead them astray (Acts 20:30). Jesus likewise mentions in the Gospel reading that He has guarded His disciples and that they will need further protection (Jn 17:11-12). Jesus then consecrates Himself so that His disciples will be consecrated in truth (Jn 17:19).

The next day, Pontius Pilate asked Jesus, “What is truth?” (see Jn 18:38) The secular culture makes everything relative, in an attempt to obscure the truth and promote its own agenda. Yet the Scriptures are greatly concerned with revealing and preserving the truth. Jesus is the Truth (Jn 14:6). “The Spirit is Truth” (1 Jn 5:6). The Spirit will guide us to all truth (Jn 16:13). God’s Word is Truth (Jn 17:17).

To a world with so much deceit, Jesus proclaims: “The reason why I came into the world is to testify to the truth. Anyone committed to the truth hears My voice” (Jn 18:37). The Church is “the pillar and bulwark of truth” (1 Tm 3:15). Immerse yourself in the Word of God and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32).

Prayer: Father, You are so concerned about me following the truth that You sent Your Son and Spirit, and gave the Church to protect me from error. May I be as devoted to the truth as You are.

Promise: God "gives power and strength to His people. Blessed be God!" —Ps 68:36

Praise: St. Justin's First Apology, written about 150 AD, outlines the familiar format of the Mass. The essence of liturgical worship has not changed.

FIRE UP
"Do not grow slack but be fervent in spirit; He Whom you serve is the Lord." —Romans 12:11

When you received the Holy Spirit, the devil immediately tried to extinguish the flame (1 Thes 5:19). At the same time, the Lord stirred the Holy Spirit into an even greater flame in your life (2 Tm 1:6). Yield to the Spirit. Put on the lampstand of your life the gifts and fruit of the Spirit (Lk 8:16). The Lord will continue to light your fire.

With Mary, go into the hill country (Lk 1:39) and give as a gift what has been given to you (Mt 10:8). The Spirit’s flame will grow in you while the Zechariahs and Elizabeths in your life are filled with the Spirit and prophesy and the babies leap for joy (Lk 1:41). Your being will proclaim the greatness of the Lord and find joy in God your Savior (Lk 1:46-47).

Let Mother Mary help you trust that the Lord’s words to you will be fulfilled (Lk 1:45). “Give, and it shall be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over, will they pour into the fold of your garment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you” (Lk 6:38). It is in giving the Spirit that we receive.

Prayer: Father, give the Holy Spirit to me and through me. Mother Mary, pray for me.

Promise: "He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in His love, He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals." —Zep 3:17-18

Praise: "But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" (Lk 1:43) Holy Spirit, thank You for inspiring St. Elizabeth to teach us the truth of Mary's divine maternity.

LITTLE OLD ME
" 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' They answered, 'We have not so much as heard that there is a Holy Spirit.' " —Acts 19:2

The Lord chooses the “lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing” (1 Cor 1:28). He pours out His Spirit on all mankind, even on the servants and handmaids (Acts 2:18; Jl 3:1-2). The “God-forsaken” Samaritans, the blasphemer Paul, and the pagan Cornelius received the Holy Spirit (see Acts 8, 9, 10). The twelve Ephesians, like the twelve apostles, received the Holy Spirit and “began to speak in tongues and to utter prophecies” (Acts 19:6). These men did not even know Jesus; they had received only the baptism of John (Acts 19:3). Yet in a few short hours, Paul led them to Jesus and to life in the Spirit.

Maybe you think you’re not worthy to receive the Holy Spirit. No one’s worthy, but Jesus baptizes in the Spirit anyway. Possibly you’re not holy. Holiness does not give you the Spirit; however; the Spirit gives you holiness. Maybe no one respects you, but Jesus promised He will in no way reject you (Jn 6:37). The Holy Spirit is for “little old you” right here and right now. “Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and in our hearts take up Thy rest.”

Prayer: Jesus, may I have a growing, burning thirst for the Spirit.

Promise: "You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world." —Jn 16:33

Praise: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His kindness endures forever. Remember me, O Lord, as You favor Your people" (Ps 106:1, 4).

POWER-PACK
"May He enlighten your innermost vision that you may know...the immeasurable scope of His power in us who believe. It is like the strength He showed in raising Christ from the dead and seating Him at His right hand in heaven." —Ephesians 1:18-20

Jesus tried to tell us we had power to overcome all demons and to cure diseases (Lk 9:1). He told us we could “cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons” (Mt 10:8). He even promised we would do greater by far than He ever did, if we only believed in Him (Jn 14:12).

However, Jesus saved the best till last. Before His Ascension, the risen Jesus, with nail-scarred hands and a hole in His side, was speaking to the apostles concerning the signs that would accompany those who had professed their faith (Mk 16:17). Jesus mentioned five signs: expelling demons, speaking new languages, handling serpents, drinking poison without suffering harm, and healing the sick (Mk 16:17-18). “No sooner had He said this than He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight” (Acts 1:9). Jesus ascended “into heaven and took His seat at God’s right hand” (Mk 16:19).

When a Man has split the clouds and left planet earth behind, He’s certainly proven Himself to be an expert on signs. When Jesus says to us: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down on you” (Acts 1:8), He knows what He’s talking about.

Prayer: Ascended, glorified Jesus, may I believe in You, Your promises, and Your power now at work in me (Eph 3:20).

Promise: "I send down upon you the promise of My Father." —Lk 24:49

Praise: "Thus you find Scripture saying: 'When He ascended on high, He took a host of captives and gave gifts to men' " (Eph 4:8). Risen Jesus, we honor Your Ascension.

YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET
"When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained to him God's new way in greater detail." —Acts 18:26

Satan’s most effective way of preventing us from receiving the Holy Spirit’s graces is to make us think we already have them. We certainly won’t seek what we think we’ve already found. The devil tries to pass off good things for God’s things.

For example, Apollos had many good things about him. He was eloquent, “an authority on Scripture and instructed in the new way of the Lord,” and “full of spiritual fervor” (Acts 18:24-25). Yet he didn’t know Jesus personally; he only knew about Jesus. He didn’t have the supernatural power of the Spirit; he had only natural power. Satan hoped Apollos would settle for human goodness and not receive divine grace. But Priscilla and Aquila took Apollos home with them and told him there was so much more and that he had not even begun to live. He needed to be born again and receive life in the Spirit.

On this second day of prayer for the Holy Spirit, let’s not settle for anything less than everything the Spirit wants for us. Let’s realize we aren’t even close to having it all and that natural goodness is a far cry from the glory of God.

Prayer: Father, may the receiving of Your gifts not be limited by my human weakness, but be unlimited by Your divine power. Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "I give you My assurance, whatever you ask the Father, He will give you in My name. Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full." —Jn 16:23-24

Praise: Sister Marcia just celebrated her 25th anniversary of consecrated religious life. Her love for Jesus radiates through all her interactions with people.

THE HOLY SPIRIT NOVENA
The "time has come." —John 16:21

Today we begin nine days of prayer for the Holy Spirit, as the apostles did in the upper room before the first Pentecost. We need this time to prepare the way for the Spirit. Possibly you’re afraid of receiving the Spirit, but “the Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but rather One that makes us strong, loving, and wise” (2 Tm 1:7). Jesus commands: “Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not be silenced, for I am with you” (Acts 18:9-10).

Come, Holy Spirit! Maybe you’ve lost a spouse, parent, child, or loved one through death and you’re too hurt to think of anything else, even the Holy Spirit. You grieve, “weep and mourn while the world rejoices” (Jn 16:20). Talk to Jesus about the death, the pain, and the loss. Ask Him questions. One day “you will have no questions to ask” Him (Jn 16:23). The Father and Son will send the Spirit to guide you to all truth (Jn 16:13). Come, Holy Spirit!

Will you stop right now and make a decision to pray for the Spirit for the next nine days?  Seek God’s will; write down how you believe He wants you to pray during these nine days. Pray and obey. Believe and receive the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to pray in these next nine days as I never have before.

Promise: "You are sad for a time, but I shall see you again; then your hearts will rejoice with a joy no one can take from you." —Jn 16:22

Praise: St. Augustine, an Italian Benedictine monk, was the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Commissioned by Pope St. Gregory the Great, Augustine had traveled to England to preach Catholicism to the Anglo-Saxon pagans.

NINE DAYS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
"You will grieve for a time, but your grief will be turned into joy." —John 16:20

Because of the outbreak of the coronavirus, we in Ohio were not able to take part in public Masses for over two months. We “grieved” the loss of the Eucharist (see Jn 16:20). When the day arrived that we could attend Mass and receive the Holy Eucharist, our grief was turned to joy (Jn 16:20).

Tomorrow begins the Pentecost Novena, nine days of praying for and preparing to receive the Holy Spirit in a life-changing way at Pentecost. Jesus insisted that His apostles wait and pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. The grief we have experienced in the two-month loss of Holy Mass was turned into joy that no one can take away from us (Jn 16:22).

The first apostles were also without the special presence of the Lord between the time of His Ascension and the day of Pentecost. They obeyed Jesus’ instruction to wait for the Holy Spirit by praying fervently (Acts 1:14). Likewise, we have been given nine days to pray and prepare for the Holy Spirit. Jesus says to you: “I send down upon you the promise of My Father. Remain [in prayer] until you are clothed with power from on high” (Lk 24:49). Jesus has a most special gift for you, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). In obedience to Jesus, will you devote these next nine days to praying to receive a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit?

Prayer: Father, I beg You to fill me with the Holy Spirit in a new way. May I use these gifts of the Spirit to serve You in holiness and power.

Promise: "The Lord has made His salvation known; in the sight of the nations He has revealed His justice." —Ps 98:2

Praise: Focusing on our modern culture can be depressing. St. Philip Neri, a "saint of joy," offers a remedy. He used his sense of humor while caring for the sick and imprisoned.

FAILURE
"When He comes, however, being the Spirit of truth He will guide you to all truth." —John 16:13

For many, this Easter season has been fantastic. Others have been discouraged. They may feel like St. Paul after his failure at Athens. When Paul started speaking to the Athenians about Jesus’ Resurrection, some interrupted and sneered at him. Others brushed him off, telling him to come back some other time (Acts 17:32). Although a few did become believers, this was the worst response in the Bible to Paul’s preaching of the Gospel.

You may also feel like a failure. You may feel like quitting and going back into the fishing business with St. Peter (Jn 21:3) or tent-making with Paul (Acts 18:3). The Lord is not calling you to quit His ministry but quit your discouragement (2 Cor 4:1).

“For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you. The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly Spirit, but rather One that makes us strong, loving, and wise” (2 Tm 1:6-7). The Holy Spirit is our Paraclete, Helper, Advocate, the One at our side. We need not focus on circumstances around us but on the Spirit within us. We don’t need to change churches, ministries, or spouses. We need the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, thank You for turning even my failures to Your honor and glory.

Promise: "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now." —Jn 16:12

Praise: St. Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi said, "You will be consoled according to the greatness of your sorrow and affliction; the greater the suffering, the greater will be the reward."

RISEN REACTIONS
"Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved." —Acts 16:31 "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires" (Gal 5:24). We are "transformed by the renewal" of our minds (Rm 12:2). "We have the mind of Christ" (1 Cor 2:16).

For example, after Sts. Paul and Silas were arrested, stripped, flogged, and put into maximum security (Acts 16:22-24), the natural reaction would be for them to feel sorry for themselves. However, they focused on God rather than themselves, as they prayed and sang hymns into the night (Acts 16:25). Then when an earthquake made it possible for Paul and Silas to easily escape, they didn’t run away, as might be expected. They didn’t think this was their only chance for freedom, so they stayed in jail and converted the jailer and his family (Acts 16:28ff). When Paul and Silas were released from jail later that day, they refused to go until the Philippian magistrates personally escorted them out of jail (Acts 16:35ff). Paul and Silas were audaciously bold, supremely confident, and deeply focused on the Lord. Because they were raised with Christ through Baptism (Col 3:1), they thought “on things above rather than on things of earth” (Col 3:2).

Are you living the risen life of faith? Are your desires and thoughts new and transformed? Do you have the desires and mind of Christ? Are you living your Baptism? Live the Resurrection now.

Prayer: Father, may I abide in, reside in, and live in Jesus.

Promise: "I tell you the sober truth: it is much better for you that I go. If I fail to go, the Paraclete will never come to you, whereas if I go, I will send Him to you." —Jn 16:7

Praise: "But the wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament" (Dn 12:3).

LYDIA, THE GIFTED LADY
Lydia "reverenced God, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying." —Acts 16:14

Lydia is a significant person in the New Testament. She was “a dealer in purple goods” (Acts 16:14), considered a luxury in the ancient world. Thus, she was both a woman of financial means and able to deal successfully with the influential. She also had a great gift of persuasion. She might be the only person in the New Testament who got the upper hand in dealing with St. Paul, when she prevailed on St. Paul to come to her home (Acts 16:15).

Lydia worshipped God and her heart was open to the preaching of the apostles (Acts 16:14). Additionally, she had the spiritual gift of being an “assistant” to Paul (1 Cor 12:28). Lydia also had the spiritual gift of leadership (Rm 12:8), as the “home church” in Philippi presumably met in her house (see Acts 16:40). Paul and Silas were thrown out of town after a very short stay in Philippi, perhaps no more than a few weeks or months. Yet the foundation started by the apostles flourished in the church which met at Lydia’s home. The foundation offered by Lydia’s firm faith and stable home led to the perseverance of the Philippian community. The letter to the Philippians is a testament to the importance of the church which met in Lydia’s home.

One person with a heart open to the Holy Spirit can make a lasting impact for the kingdom of God. Be a Lydia. Use everything in your life for the service of the Lord.

Prayer: Father, use me for Your Kingdom and use me up.

Promise: The Holy Spirit "will bear witness on My behalf. You must bear witness as well." —Jn 15:26-27

Praise: Warren learned how to create Internet websites so he could reach people with the Gospel. His labor of love now reaches many thousands monthly with the Word of God.

TWO MORE WEEKS
"It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and ours too." —Acts 15:28

Two more weeks and we reach one of the most important events in our lives, Pentecost. Jesus continues to say: “This much have I told you while I was still with you; the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you” (Jn 14:25-26).

We need the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, what Jesus has told us will not become real in our lives. We will then become “distressed or fearful” (Jn 14:27). Without the Spirit, we will “make a pretense of religion but negate its power” (2 Tm 3:5), foster doubt rather than faith, and promote disunity in the Body of Christ. We receive the Spirit or stay locked by fear in the upper room (Jn 20:19, 26). We receive the Spirit or see our life’s work amount to nothing, for “flesh begets flesh, Spirit begets spirit” (Jn 3:6).

The word “spirit” also means “breath.” We need the Holy Spirit as much or even more than we need our life’s breath. Begin to wait and pray (Acts 1:4), to pray and thirst (Lk 11:13), to thirst and believe (Jn 7:37), to believe and obey (Acts 5:32). Jesus “breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ ” (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Father, renew my Confirmation. Fill me with the Spirit in a way beyond anything I have ever imagined (Eph 3:20).

Promise: The angel "carried me away in spirit to the top of a very high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God." —Rv 21:10

Praise: "It is the will of Him Who sent Me that I should lose nothing of what He has given Me; rather, that I should raise it up on the last day" (Jn 6:39). Risen Jesus, thank You for Your mercy.

THE SCENE OF THE CRIME - One Bread, One Body, 05/21/2022

THE SCENE OF THE CRIME
Paul "came to Lystra." —Acts 16:1

In the city of Lystra, St. Paul had stones smashed against his skull until he was knocked unconscious (Acts 14:19). His enemies dragged him through and out of town, and threw him to the ground, possibly into the dump. Paul’s disciples formed a circle around him, and he either regained consciousness or was raised from the dead. Then Paul amazingly, courageously, went back into Lystra (Acts 14:20).

He even returned on two other occasions to Lystra, the scene of the crimes against him (Acts 14:21; 16:1). The last time we hear of Paul in Lystra was when he called St. Timothy into the ministry (Acts 16:1-3). If Paul hadn’t returned to the scene of the crime, if he hadn’t been healed enough and courageous enough to go back, possibly Timothy would never have been raised up as one of the great disciples and leaders of the early Church.

Where is your Lystra? Where is the scene of the crimes against you? Where and by whom have you been hurt deeply? Be healed. Go back. Let faith overcome fear. There’s a blessing, a miracle in your Lystra, if you have the healing and courage to return.

Prayer: Risen Jesus, take my hand. Lead me through the desert to the promised land.

Promise: "The reason [the world] hates you is that you do not belong to the world. But I chose you out of the world." —Jn 15:19

Praise: St. Christopher served as a priest in Mexico. At the time, the secular government severely persecuted Catholics. He secretly founded a seminary, not allowing intimidation to stop priestly education.

“A FRIEND INDEED” - One Bread, One Body, 05/20/2022

"A FRIEND INDEED"
"Instead, I call you friends, since I have made known to you all that I heard from My Father." —John 15:15

Are you Jesus’ friend? You are His friend if you do as He commands you (Jn 15:14). His command is to love one another as He has loved us (Jn 15:12). If you do this, you will realize that Jesus laid down His life for you (Jn 15:13), and you will lay down your life for others (1 Jn 3:16). Then you will understand what Jesus the Master is about (Jn 15:15). God’s work will not puzzle but enlighten you.

Only Jesus’ loving, obedient friends experience this. This crucified love bears much fruit. It opens even the hardest hearts to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Are you Jesus’ friend? Will you die even for your enemies? Is your love covering a multitude of sins? (1 Pt 4:8) Are you bearing fruit by leading people to Jesus? Jesus reveals specific prerequisites for and effects of being His friend.

“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth. A faithful friend is a life-saving remedy, such as he who fears God finds; for he who fears God behaves accordingly, and his friend will be like himself” (Sir 6:14-17). Jesus’ friends become like Jesus.

Prayer: Risen Jesus, make me like You, both crucified and glorified.

Promise: "When it was read there was great delight at the encouragement it gave." —Acts 15:31

Praise: St. Bernardine of Siena is known as "the Apostle of Italy." During the fifteenth century, he used his gift of preaching to revive the country's lukewarm Catholic faith. He spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.

THE SECRET OF JOY
"All this I tell you, that My joy may be yours." —John 15:11

Jesus promises us we can have His joy, the joy of God enthroned in heaven. We receive this joy by keeping God’s commandments as Jesus kept the Father’s commandments (Jn 15:10).

This may come as a surprise to many because we think joy depends on doing our own thing rather than God’s thing. However, let the facts speak for themselves. Possibly never before has a culture been so preoccupied with feeling good, pleasure-seeking, and selfish pursuits. Yet we are very discontent. Alienated youth, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and apathy are telltale signs that something is very wrong. We’ve tried to gain our lives but, just as Jesus said, we’ve lost them (Lk 9:24).

If we refuse to learn by believing, maybe we can learn by failing. Let’s try God’s way, the way of self-denial (Lk 9:23), the way of the cross. Jesus’ way is the only way to happiness, contentment, and joy. Jesus is the Way (Jn 14:6). Sin and disobedience rob us of our joy. Repentance and obedience restore it. Rejoice in the Lord! (Phil 4:4)

Prayer: Jesus, may I meet You risen and be delivered from selfishness.

Promise: "God, Who reads the hearts of men, showed His approval by granting the Holy Spirit to them." —Acts 15:8

Praise: Julia overcame her depression by reading and praying the Psalms.

FRUIT STAND - One Bread, One Body, 05/18/2022

Psalm 122:1-5
John 15:1-8

FRUIT STAND
"No more than a branch can bear fruit of itself apart from the vine, can you bear fruit apart from Me." —John 15:4

The first words God said to newly created humanity were: “Be fertile and multiply” (Gn 1:28). Among Jesus’ last words before His Ascension were: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name ‘of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’ ” (Mt 28:19). Immediately before His Ascension, Jesus commanded us to be His witnesses “even to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Jesus expects us to produce abundantly as branches on the Vine, or else we will be “picked up to be thrown in the fire and burnt” (Jn 15:6). Even fruitful branches the Lord “trims clean to increase their yield” (Jn 15:2). The Lord makes it extremely clear we must bear fruit by leading people to Him. Christians bear fruit by making more Christians. During the first Easter season, the apostles were transformed from being fruitless to being fruitful. Expect the same transformation in your life this Easter season and Pentecost. Jesus proclaimed: “My Father has been glorified in your bearing much fruit and becoming My disciples” (Jn 15:8). “Make disciples” (Mt 28:19).

Prayer: Risen Jesus, the only answer for a sinful, sick, broken, and unforgiving world is conversion to You. May I bear fruit for Your kingdom. Trim me.

Promise: "The church saw them off and they made their way through Phoenicia and Samaria, telling everyone about the conversion of the Gentiles as they went. Their story caused great joy." —Acts 15:3

Praise: Pope St. John I standardized the date of Easter and promoted liturgical chant. He reunited a schismatic segment of the Church. He was eventually martyred by Theodoric the Great, an Arian heretic king.

CIRCLE FREEWAY
"His disciples quickly formed a circle about him, and before long he got up and went back into town." —Acts 14:20

Paul’s persecutors attempted to kill him by stoning. They “dragged him out of the town, leaving him there for dead” (Acts 14:19). The circle of disciples raised the dead.

We need to form a prayer-circle around “the living dead” in our midst (1 Jn 3:14). Anyone who does not know Jesus is spiritually dead, reaping “the wages of sin” (Rm 6:23). Some churches are dead (Rv 3:1). Some marriages are dead. We can circle these people, churches, and couples, just as Joshua circled Jericho and the walls came tumbling down (Jos 6:20).

We can circle the dead and bring them to life by literally joining our hands, by a week of prayer (as with Jericho), by “praying over” people, by forming a prayer chain or intercessory group. If we but let the Spirit guide us, we can circle our dead planet with life-giving prayer. Let’s go around in circles, up in resurrection spirals, into new life, a new life of true freedom.

Prayer: Father, may the praying hands on earth join in a circle of prayer and risen life.

Promise: "If you truly loved Me you would rejoice to have Me go to the Father." —Jn 14:28

Praise: When Henry had a near-death experience, he began to take his life and afterlife seriously. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for drawing all people to Yourself (Jn 12:32).

HOLY BOLDNESS - One Bread, One Body, 05/16/2022

John 14:21-26

HOLY BOLDNESS
"On one occasion he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked directly at him and saw that he had the faith to be saved." —Acts 14:9

Would you have the courage and the assurance to yell at a person in a wheelchair: “Stand up! On your feet!”? (Acts 14:10) By that bold command, St. Paul healed a crippled man who had never walked a step in his life (Acts 14:8).

Paul didn’t always have such boldness. For example, for several days, he put up with the disruptive behavior of a girl with a clairvoyant spirit (Acts 16:16). “Finally Paul became annoyed, turned around, and said to the spirit, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ I command you, come out of her!’ Then and there the spirit left her” (Acts 16:18). Sometimes it took Paul days to give the command that would heal and deliver.

The Holy Spirit confirms us in our faith so we can act in Jesus’ name authoritatively, boldly, and freely. The Spirit helps us pray and listen to our Father (Rm 8:26). We’re in touch with Him; we know what we’re doing; we have reason to be bold. The Spirit also teaches us the Word of God (Jn 14:26), so we know what belongs to us, what we have to put up with, and what we don’t have to put up with.

When we know God’s Word, the devil can’t get away so easily with robbing us. We know enough to claim our inheritance. Finally, the Spirit empowers us to obey. During this Easter season, let the Spirit make you bold.

Prayer: Father, by Your power, may I receive the gift to heal in Jesus' name.

Promise: "Anyone who loves Me will be true to My word, and My Father will love him; We will come to him." —Jn 14:23

Praise: "How precious is Your kindness, O God! The children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings" (Ps 36:8).

"BECAUSE HE LIVES"
"God will, in turn, glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him soon." —John 13:32

We’re in the midst of a fifty-day Sunday, the Easter season. If we can’t rejoice in the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, we must be dead ourselves. Because His tomb is empty, we have life to the full (Jn 10:10). “Because He lives, we can face tomorrow.” For He shall wipe every tear from our eyes, “and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain, for the former world has passed away” (Rv 21:4). “This means that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old order has passed away; now all is new!” (2 Cor 5:17; Rv 21:5)

“Life is worth the living just because He lives.” Yet, “we must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God” (Acts 14:22). Calvary is still ahead for each of us as we begin to walk the way of the cross. We are afraid and repelled by the pain and sufferings. But because Jesus lives, we “consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us” (Rm 8:18).

Because Jesus lives, the devil can no longer manipulate us and keep us slaves our whole lives long through the fear of death (Heb 2:15). “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (1 Cor 15:54-55) Because He lives, “we are more than conquerors” (Rm 8:37).

Prayer: Jesus, may I shout from the rooftops that You are alive (Lk 12:3).

Promise: "This is how all will know you for My disciples: your love for one another." —Jn 13:35

Praise: "[Abraham] reasoned that God was able to raise from the dead, and so he received Isaac back as a symbol" (Heb 11:19). Praise Jesus, Author and Finisher of our faith (see Heb 12:2).

FROM BOGGED DOWN TO FIRED UP
"During those days, Peter stood up." —Acts 1:15

Jesus commands us to go forth, bear fruit (Jn 15:16), make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19), and take more initiative in building God’s kingdom than the worldly take in making money (Lk 16:8). We are to be zealous for the Lord.

Nevertheless, many of us are rather apathetic and listless. We sit around and think of all the things we should have done but have never accomplished. We are like the disciples in the upper room who did not replace Judas for over forty days. Some of us have a backlog of things to do which spans forty days or even years.

The Holy Spirit is beginning to move to motivate us to do at least one thing. That one thing might be to be reconciled with somebody, forgive someone, or repent of at least one sin. The Spirit is moving ever so gradually. The water of the Spirit is trickling into our lives (see Ez 47:2). If we obey the Spirit in this one way, that trickle of the Spirit will become rivers of life-giving water (see Jn 7:38). By doing something in the Spirit, we open the floodgates for the Spirit to be poured out in a new Pentecost.

Prayer: Father, change me from bogged down and clogged up to wide open and free-flowing.

Promise: "It was not you who chose Me, it was I Who chose you to go forth and bear fruit." —Jn 15:16

Praise: During the days after Jesus' Ascension, the apostles chose two men to replace Judas. They drew lots and St. Matthias was the one chosen to join the ranks of Apostles of Christ (Acts 1:21-26). St. Matthias restored wholeness to the apostles. "I will give the victor the right to sit with Me on My throne, as I Myself won the victory and took My seat beside My Father on His throne" (Rv 3:21).

MISSING OUT? - One Bread, One Body, 05/13/2022

MISSING OUT?
"The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their rulers failed to recognize Him, and in condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets which we read sabbath after sabbath." —Acts 13:27

We can go to church every week or every day, hear God’s Word, and still fail to recognize Jesus. We can read the Bible daily, including the Bible readings and teachings in this book, One Bread, One Body, but not give our lives totally to the Lord. We can even confess Jesus as Lord (Mt 7:21), prophesy, do miracles, and drive out demons in His name (Mt 7:22), but not have the right relationship with the Lord. Thus, He may say to us: “I never knew you. Out of My sight, you evildoers!” (Mt 7:23)

Let us not miss the day of salvation, the season of mercy, and the time of God’s visitation (see Lk 19:41ff). We have been baptized into Christ Jesus. He is within us. “How shall we escape if we ignore a salvation as great as ours?” (Heb 2:3)

“Delay not your conversion to the Lord, put it not off from day to day” (Sir 5:8). “Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!” (2 Cor 6:2) Let us accept Jesus on His terms. Let us love Him with a total, crucified love, and thus love Him as He has loved us. The Lord is giving you the grace at this moment to give yourself totally to Him. Say “Yes” to Jesus.

Prayer: Father, I am all Yours.

Promise: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God and faith in Me." —Jn 14:1

Praise: As a Church-approved Marian apparition, Our Lady of Fatima has encouraged many Catholics to grow in piety. Public devotion spanning more than 100 years has brought about many conversions.

A GOD-SEND - One Bread, One Body, 05/12/2022

A GOD-SEND
"I solemnly assure you, he who accepts anyone I send accepts Me, and in accepting Me accepts Him Who sent Me." —John 13:20

We accept Jesus and God the Father by accepting those whom Jesus sends to us. Jesus has sent us His Body, the Church. He has sent us the bishops and the Pope as leaders of the Church. The members of our parish are “God-sent.” He has sent the members of our families into our lives. Our neighbors and co-workers are “heaven-sent.” Even some of our enemies are sent by Jesus.

Consequently, we accept Jesus and the Father by:

  • loving and obeying His Church,
  • knowing and serving our fellow parishioners,
  • laying down our lives for the members of our family,
  • loving our co-workers and neighbors as ourselves (see Mt 22:39), and
  • forgiving, loving, and even dying for our enemies (see Lk 6:27-35).

Accepting Jesus is not an isolated decision. To accept Jesus is to take all our relationships to a new level. To accept Jesus is to enter a new dimension of humanly impossible, unconditional, crucified love. To accept Jesus is a grace, miracle, and privilege. Accept Jesus — on His terms.

Prayer: Father, teach me to love.

Promise: "The favors of the Lord I will sing forever; through all generations my mouth shall proclaim Your faithfulness." —Ps 89:2

Praise: Sts. Nereus and Achilleus were the Roman emperor's bodyguards, soldiers of the Praetorian Guard. Centuries later, Pope St. Damasus memorialized their conversion and martyrdom.

DARK SHADOWS
"I have come to the world as its Light, to keep anyone who believes in Me from remaining in the dark." —John 12:46

Have you come out of the darkness of the tomb into the light of the resurrection this Easter season? Isn’t that what Easter is all about? For example, John Mark moved from darkness into light. He accompanied Sts. Paul and Barnabas on the relief mission for starving Jerusalem (Acts 12:25). He also accompanied them on the first missionary journey (Acts 13:5). The first encounter on that first journey was traumatic. Elymas “the Magician” was struck blind and Sergius Paulus, the governor, was converted to Jesus (Acts 13:11-12). Possibly this was too much for Mark, as he abandoned ship and quit his mission (Acts 13:13; see also Acts 15:38). He was in the darkness of fear and unfaithfulness.

St. Mark eventually returned to missionary work as Barnabas’ partner. He later put together the earliest Gospel. In his Gospel, he highlights Jesus’ healings of the blind (Mk 8:22; 10:46). The very circumstance that may have traumatized him is now lifted up to the glory of God. Mark is an Easter person who went out of the dark tomb of fear into the risen light.

Prayer: Jesus, I'm afraid of difficult circumstances. Bring me out of that tomb.

Promise: "Whoever rejects Me and does not accept My words already has his judge, namely, the Word I have spoken — it is that which will condemn him on the last day." —Jn 12:48

Praise: Margaret left the Church during the sexual scandals, but returned after missing the High Priest, Jesus, in the Eucharist.

FAITH IS SPELLED R-I-S-K - One Bread, One Body, 05/10/2022

John 10:22-30

FAITH IS SPELLED R-I-S-K
"News of this eventually reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, resulting in Barnabas' being sent to Antioch." —Acts 11:22

St. Barnabas “was a good man filled with the Holy Spirit and faith” (Acts 11:24). The Lord called him to live his faith in high-risk situations.

We first hear of Barnabas (at that time named Joseph) selling his farm and laying the proceeds at the apostles’ feet (Acts 4:36-37). If you did such a thing, would you be taking a risk? What if the Church did not provide for you? What if you lost everything?

Barnabas’ next great act of faith was his courage in accepting the newly converted Saul, a former killer of Christians. Barnabas was the only disciple in Jerusalem not afraid of Saul (Acts 9:26-27). Many thought it likely that Saul’s conversion was only a ploy to kill more Christians (see Acts 9:26). Yet Barnabas, by faith, took the risk.

Next, we hear of Barnabas being chosen by the church of Jerusalem to discern the authenticity of Gentiles in Antioch being converted to the Lord. Barnabas “rejoiced to see the evidence of God’s favor. He encouraged them all to remain firm in their commitment to the Lord” (Acts 11:23). This was an extremely controversial discernment, and Barnabas would later be severely persecuted for this discernment (see Acts 13:46, 50).

Barnabas later led the first Christian missionary journey (Acts 13:2ff). He could have easily been killed. He was risking his life again and walking by faith.

Are you a man or woman of faith? Are you risking accordingly?

Prayer: Father, make me free, fearless, unmanipulated, and unintimidated.

Promise: "No one shall snatch [My sheep] out of My hand." —Jn 10:28

Praise: St. Damien gave dignity, the Eucharist, and ultimately, his life to those lepers he served on the island of Moloka'i.
