FAITH TO TRY AGAIN
"Master, we have been hard at it all night long and have caught nothing; but if You say so, I will lower the nets." —Luke 5:5

Even in our culture of death, many of us have “been hard at” evangelizing, serving, and working for the Lord. Some of us seemingly have “toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent” our strength (Is 49:4). Although we are frustrated, recall the words of Pope St. John Paul II.  He told us to “put out into deep water” (Lk 5:4).

At the same time, Satan is trying to rob us of the blessings of obedience to the Lord. He accuses us day and night (Rv 12:10). He encourages our cynicism and plays on our pessimism. He tells us to give up hope so that we will not have our hopes disappointed again. Satan tells us to be “realistic” — to walk by sight and not by faith (cf 2 Cor 5:7).

But Jesus continues to say: “Put out into deep water” (Lk 5:4). Will you have faith to try again, or will you remain crushed by frustration?

Prayer: Father, none of Your promises are "too good to be true." I believe in You.

Promise: "If any one of you thinks he is wise in a worldly way, he had better become a fool. In that way he will really be wise." —1 Cor 3:18

Praise: By continuing to go to Confession, Daniel has received the grace to overcome many faults and bad habits.

FIELD OF DREAMS? - One Bread, One Body, 08/31/2022

FIELD OF DREAMS?
"You are God's field." —1 Corinthians 3:9, RSV-CE

Jesus told a parable about a man who found a buried treasure in a field. The man rejoiced at finding the treasure. He “sold all he had and bought that field” (Mt 13:44). Jesus said that “the reign of God is like” buying such a field with buried treasure (Mt 13:44).

Jesus lived this parable. From heaven, the Lord looked “down; He [saw] all mankind” (Ps 33:13). When we look at people, we might see a “field” of twisted deceit and dysfunction (see Jer 17:9). We might find it difficult to see anything of value, much less any treasure. But the Lord sees buried treasure in human hearts.

What do you see when you look at your own life? You may only see brokenness and a mess beyond repair. You may be “little in your own esteem” (1 Sm 15:17), but the Lord Jesus sees a buried treasure in the field of your life. Do you know your value in the sight of God? You belong to Him; “you are God’s field” (1 Cor 3:9, RSV-CE). Jesus gave all He had, His divine life, in order to pay the purchase price (1 Cor 6:20) and buy you for His own. He has dreams of great fruitfulness, even a “hundredfold” harvest from the field of your life (Mk 4:20).

Therefore, give your life to Him Who has already purchased you. Change your lifestyle; store up heavenly treasure in order to be rich in what matters to God (Lk 12:21). Be good soil as God’s field. Bear abundant fruit for Him (Jn 15:4-5, 8).

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to imitate Jesus by seeing the hidden treasure in the lives of those You have placed in my path. Help me to lay down my life for them as Jesus did (1 Jn 3:16).

Promise: "Happy the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen for His own inheritance." —Ps 33:12

Praise: Each year, Fr. Anthony instructs and baptizes several Muslim converts to the faith. He delights in teaching them about the mercy and love of Jesus.

CAN YOU DISCERN SPIRITS? - One Bread, One Body, 08/30/2022

CAN YOU DISCERN SPIRITS?
"The Spirit we have received is not the world's spirit but God's Spirit, helping us to recognize the gifts He has given us." —1 Corinthians 2:12

“The Spirit scrutinizes all matters, even the deep things of God. Who, for example, knows a man’s innermost self but the man’s own spirit within him?” (1 Cor 2:10-11) “In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit” (Lk 4:33). From these Scriptures, we see that there are three kinds of spirits: God, human spirits, and angelic spirits (either good angels or demons).

These three sources of spirits are the origin of everything that happens. Therefore, to understand life we need to discern the spirits behind things. This is more complicated than discerning which one of the three spirits is at work because more than one spirit can be the cause of some things. At different times, both the Holy Spirit and demons work through human spirits.

To understand reality, we need a special gift from God — the gift of discernment of spirits (see 1 Cor 12:10). While God hasn’t given this gift to everyone, everyone benefits from those who do have it. Therefore, we must use and develop this gift if we have it, so we can serve others. Without the gift of discernment of spirits, we will be confused and susceptible to being deceived, divided, and defeated by evil spirits. With the discernment of spirits, we will know God and even “the deep things of God” (1 Cor 2:10). We will know the truth about life. We will be free, peaceful, joyful, and victorious.

Ask the Lord for the gift of discernment of spirits or, if you already have it, ask for the gift to be developed. Ask the Lord to help you recognize this gift in others. Form Christian community in which this gift can be readily shared. Then follow the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:25), make holy the human spirit, and drive out the evil spirits.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, guide me to all truth (Jn 16:13).

Promise: "We have the mind of Christ." —1 Cor 2:16

Praise: Carol thought that giving up her job to stay at home with her children was bad news indeed. Now she rejoices to be able to home-school her children and raise them up in the faith.

A GOOD DAY'S WORK
"John had told Herod, 'It is not right for you to live with your brother's wife.' " —Mark 6:18

In today’s Gospel, St. John the Baptizer preaches the Good News. This means not just a pat on the back but the ultimate Good News of repentance, freedom, healing, and restoration through Jesus’ death and Resurrection. Our job is to build God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven (Mt 6:10).

When we die, planet earth should be more in line with God’s order than when we were conceived. We should leave the earth better than we found it. We cannot accomplish this monumental task by our human power. If, however, we proclaim the Good News of Christ crucified (1 Cor 2:2) with the anointing of the Holy Spirit (Lk 4:18), the Lord will do the rest. Nothing is impossible with Him (Lk 1:37). He made this earth, and He can re-make it into His image and likeness.

Beginning today, let God work and speak through you. May the world be more Christ-like for your having lived here.

Prayer: Jesus, may I do a good job for You today and tell someone the Good News about You.

Promise: "Your faith rests not on the wisdom of men but on the power of God." —1 Cor 2:5

Praise: "All the prophets as well as the law spoke prophetically until John. If you are prepared to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who was certain to come" (Mt 11:13-14). St. John the Baptizer, pray for us.

(Widowhood has its challenges. You can receive strength from the consolation of the Holy Spirit. A special retreat for the widowed will be held Sept. 16-18. Call 513-373-2397 or e-mail retreats@presentationministries.com to register.)

THE MOST HUMBLE
"He who humbles himself shall be exalted." —Luke 14:11

“Conduct your affairs with humility” (Sir 3:17). “Humble yourself the more, the greater you are” (Sir 3:18). We who are disciples of Jesus and have been baptized into Jesus are called to be the most humble of all people, for Jesus “emptied Himself” and became a human being (Phil 2:7). Then He “humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!” (Phil 2:8) Therefore, “in your relations with one another, clothe yourselves with humility, because God ‘is stern with the arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness’ ” (1 Pt 5:5).

Jesus invites us: “Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart” (Mt 11:29). Jesus has taught us that we humble ourselves when we take the lowest place (Lk 14:10). Jesus did this by being born in Bethlehem; growing up in Nazareth; becoming a carpenter; choosing to be poor (see 2 Cor 8:9), persecuted, even a slave (Phil 2:7); choosing apostles and disciples who were “lowborn and despised” by the world (1 Cor 1:28); washing the feet of His apostles (Jn 13:5); freely letting Himself suffer crucifixion, the most disgraceful way to die; and remaining with us under the appearance of bread and wine.

Jesus humbled Himself to the extreme. He was then highly exalted and given “the name above every other name” (Phil 2:9). In the name of Jesus, humble yourself to the extreme.

Prayer: Father, I have been baptized into Jesus and into His humility. May I live accordingly.

Promise: "A bountiful rain You showered down, O God, upon Your inheritance; You restored the land when it languished." —Ps 68:10

Praise: "The One Whom God has raised up did not undergo corruption" (Acts 13:37). Risen Jesus, You are our hope and our salvation.

STRICTEST STEWARDSHIP
"After a long absence, the master of those servants came home and settled accounts with them." —Matthew 25:19

The Lord expects us to be good managers of the lives, time, talents, opportunities, finances, possessions, and resources He has given us. Paradoxically, the Lord is both a very lenient and very strict Master. To those with limited opportunities, the Lord is extremely merciful. For instance, the Lord took the good thief to be with Him in paradise although he had done little good with his life until his act of faith shortly before his death (Lk 23:43).

Conversely, from those who have been given much the Lord expects much (Lk 12:48). Pope St. John Paul II taught: “Those who are incorporated in the Catholic Church ought to sense their privilege and for that very reason their greater obligation of  bearing witness to the faith and to the Christian life as a service to their brothers and sisters and as a fitting response to God. They should be ever mindful that ‘they owe their distinguished status not to their own merits but to Christ’s special grace; and if they fail to respond to this grace in thought, word and deed, not only will they not be saved, they will be judged more severely’ ” (Mission of the Redeemer, 11; Vatican II, Lumen Gentium, 14).

All Christians, especially Catholics, be good and faithful stewards, for you will be judged accordingly.

Prayer: Father, may I hear You say to me: "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Mt 25:21, RSV-CE).

Promise: "He singled out the weak of this world to shame the strong. He chose the world's lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were something." —1 Cor 1:27-28

CROSS-WORD
"For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world, by wisdom, knew not God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of our preaching, to save them that believe." —1 Corinthians 1:21, Douay-Rheims

Jesus has saved us through the foolishness of the message of the cross. This salvation applies to every aspect of our lives. Through the supposed foolishness of the cross, we can be saved from marital breakdown, financial insecurity, manipulation by fears, loss of purpose in life, anxieties, despair, self-hatred, enslaving addictions, bitterness, unforgiveness, and all other evils. We are saved always by the “foolishness” of the cross.

Thus, we can pray with St. Francis of Assisi: “We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.” When we are redeemed from addictions, it is by the cross. When a marriage is a glorious sign of Christ’s love for the Church (see Eph 5:32), we should boast of nothing but the cross (Gal 6:14). When we forgive and love our enemies and ourselves, we should “speak of nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor 2:2).

The cross is the only tree of life. It is a scandal to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles, but to those called by God, the cross is “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1:24). Take up the cross daily (Lk 9:23).

Prayer: Father, when I make the Sign of the Cross, may it express the meaning of my life.

Promise: "The ones who were ready went in to the wedding with him." —Mt 25:10

Praise: Not having received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for twenty years, Jose made a decision to do so monthly.

THANK GOD FOR YOU!
"I continually thank my God for you." —1 Corinthians 1:4

Father Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body (OBOB), passed from this life to the next on October 13, 2002. In the final weeks of his battle with cancer, Father often expressed his thanks to those who had supported him, prayed for him, and received him.

In the last two weeks of his life, Father could no longer leave his bedroom. Masses were celebrated in his room. Although Father could not celebrate the Mass, he did give short homilies from his bed. Near the end of one of the last Masses, Father wasn’t able to say much, but over and over he softly spoke to all present the words, “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

If Father Al were writing this teaching today, he would want you to know that he continually thanks God for you, the readers of OBOB (1 Cor 1:4). He found joy and encouragement in your letters. He rejoiced when you wrote of the great things God had done in your lives. Just as St. John rejoiced to see his children “walking in the path of truth” (2 Jn 4; 3 Jn 3-4), Father delighted in your love of God’s Word and of the Church. Your faithfulness, zeal, generosity, and fruitfulness gave him fresh courage and delight. Now that Father has gone to the Lord, be assured that he is still alive for God (Lk 20:38), is even more fervently praying to God on your behalf, and is still thanking God for you.

Prayer: Lord, may every reader of OBOB be "richly endowed with every gift of speech and knowledge" (1 Cor 1:5) and bear much fruit in becoming Your disciple (Jn 15:8).

Promise: "Happy that servant whom his master discovers at work on his return!" —Mt 24:46

Praise: St. Louis, king of France, was renowned for his concern for the poor, and daily invited thirteen of them to dine with him.

NATHANAEL
"You will see much greater things than that." —John 1:50

The first time we encounter St. Nathanael (also called Bartholomew) is in John’s Gospel. Nathanael is prejudiced. He insults Jesus even before he meets Him (Jn 1:46). Jesus nonetheless opens up Nathanael by a word of supernatural knowledge (Jn 1:48). Nathanael responds by confessing Jesus as Son of God and King of Israel (Jn 1:49). Jesus has begun His work in Nathanael’s life.

Nathanael accompanies Jesus for three years in His preaching, deliverance, and healing ministry. Finally, Nathanael sins grievously by abandoning Jesus when He was arrested and put to death (Mk 14:50). Three days later, Nathanael sees Jesus risen from the dead (Jn 20:19). However, this does not change Nathanael much. With Peter, Nathanael goes back to fishing, until Jesus awakens him with the miraculous catch of fish (Jn 21:2ff). Even this causes little permanent change.

Finally, Nathanael receives the Holy Spirit at the first Pentecost (Acts 2:4). Jesus’ work immediately bears fruit. Nathanael is a changed man, a great missionary to the nations, and a foundation-stone of the new Jerusalem (Rv 21:14). With Nathanael, “receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22), receive new life (Jn 10:10), and change the world for Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for turning a prejudiced man into a Spirit-filled apostle and missionary. Transform me as well.

Promise: "I solemnly assure you, you shall see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." —Jn 1:51

Praise: Lord Jesus, it is You "Who gave apostles...to build up the body of Christ" (Eph 4:11-12). Thank You for calling St. Bartholomew to serve Your Father's kingdom in Armenia and India.

The day of the Lord is coming (see 2 Thes 2:2). “A day of wrath is that day, a day of anguish and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of thick black clouds” (Zep 1:15). “Since everything is to be destroyed in this way, what sort of men must you not be! How holy in your conduct and devotion, looking for the coming of the day of God and trying to hasten it!” (2 Pt 3:11-12) The day of the Lord is a call to holiness.

Jesus called the scribes and Pharisees frauds, hypocrites, blind guides, fools, and whitened sepulchres (Mt 23:13ff). Jesus wasn’t trying to insult the religious leaders so much as to call them to holiness. In a similar way, John the Baptizer called Herod and Herodias to turn from their sinful lifestyle and live in holiness.

God is holy. His preoccupation is that His name be recognized as holy (Mt 6:9) because His children are holy “in every aspect” of their conduct (1 Pt 1:15). Consider your joys and sorrows as calls to holiness. Those events that surprise or puzzle you may best be understood as calls to holiness. Therefore, strive “for that holiness without which no one can see the Lord” (Heb 12:14).  By God’s grace, desire holiness more than you want anything else in life. “Be holy,” for He is holy (1 Pt 1:16).

Prayer: "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty!" (Rv 4:8)

Promise: "May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, may God our Father Who loved us and in His mercy gave us eternal consolation and hope, console your hearts and strengthen them for every good work and word." —2 Thes 2:16-17

Praise: St. Rose of Lima offered herself to God as a sacrifice (Rm 12:1) by making reparation for others who lived lives of corruption and sin.

JUST SUFFERING
"You endure these as an expression of God's just judgment." —2 Thessalonians 1:4-5

When Christians suffer persecutions and trials, we often say we’re in spiritual warfare. We may even claim to be suffering redemptively, and many times this is the case. Nevertheless, Christians don’t always suffer for being Christians (see 1 Pt 4:15-16). Sometimes we Christians suffer for not being Christians. In that case, our suffering is not spiritual warfare, for we, not evil spirits, are “our own worst enemies.” Then we are not suffering redemptively, but justly. We are getting the wages of our sins (see Rm 6:23). We are being punished now to wake us up to our sinfulness so that we will not have to be punished on Judgment Day.

However, we don’t learn from being punished if we wrongly portray ourselves as innocent martyrs valiantly fighting the evil one and heroically suffering for righteousness’ sake (see Mt 5:10). One of Satan’s frequent tactics is to tempt a person to focus on him rather than on their own need for repentance. Thank God for martyrs, but not every suffering Christian is one. Many suffering Christians are downright obnoxious or, even worse, sinful. If we would face this, then we could repent of our sins and be true martyrs, that is, witnesses.

Ask Mary to lay bare the thoughts of many hearts, including your own (Lk 2:35). Then you will see your sufferings realistically and answer God’s call to repent.

Prayer: Father, may I take the plank out of my eye so as to see clearly enough to remove the specks from others' eyes (Mt 7:5).

Promise: "We pray for you always that our God may make you worthy of His call and fulfill by His power every honest intention and work of faith." —2 Thes 1:11

Praise: As prefigured in the Old Testament, the Queen Mother reigns with her Son, the King. "Many are the women of proven worth, but you have excelled them all" (Prv 31:29).

THE LOCKED DOOR
"Lord, are they few in number who are to be saved?" —Luke 13:23

Jesus did not answer this question directly. He answered it with a picture. Picture a door locked with people standing “outside knocking and saying, ‘Sir, open for us’ ” (Lk 13:25). Then a voice from the other side of the door replies: “I do not know where you come from” (Lk 13:25). Next, those locked out try to explain that there must be some misunderstanding, for they have gone to church and received some religious instruction (cf Lk 13:26). Once again the voice from the other side of the locked door answers: “I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Away from Me, you evildoers!” (Lk 13:27) Now those locked out of eternal life begin to panic; they beat on the door with “wailing and grinding of teeth” (Lk 13:28).

“Are they few in number who are to be saved?” (Lk 13:23) We don’t know because Jesus did not answer this question directly. We do know that many “will try to enter and be unable” (Lk 13:24). Therefore, “try to come in through the narrow door” (Lk 13:24). “The gate that leads to damnation is wide, the road is clear, and many choose to travel it. But how narrow is the gate that leads to life, how rough the road, and how few there are who find it!” (Mt 7:13-14)

Jesus said: “I am the Gate” (Jn 10:9). He is the Door and the only Way (Jn 14:6). “There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12). “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, and all your household” (Acts 16:31).

Prayer: Father, I accept the grace to be saved (Eph 2:8).

Promise: "Make straight the paths you walk on, that your halting limbs may not be dislocated but healed." —Heb 12:13

Praise: Praise Jesus, the Gate, the Door, the only Way! Praise You, Jesus, our "Leader in the work of salvation" (Heb 2:10).

THE PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL
"The scribes and the Pharisees have succeeded Moses as teachers; therefore, do everything and observe everything they tell you. But do not follow their example." —Matthew 23:2-3

The scribes copied the Sacred Scriptures by hand. This indicates that in their time they were among the most intelligent and best educated people in the world. They were professionals and experts in the Holy Bible.

The Pharisees believed in angels and in the resurrection of the just. They had the most advanced theology in history up to that time. Jesus Himself recognized that they and the scribes were the rightful, authoritative successors of “Moses as teachers” (Mt 23:2-3).

Despite the greatness of the scribes and the Pharisees, most of them rejected Jesus, the Messiah, and thus prepared the way for their own downfall. Their problem was pride. They exalted themselves, so God humbled them (Mt 23:12). They were “fond of places of honor at banquets and the front seats in synagogues, of marks of respect in public” (Mt 23:6-7). They were show-offs, mere people-pleasers, and pleasure-seekers.

Therefore, “be humbled in the sight of the Lord” (Jas 4:10). Learn from Jesus, Who is “gentle and humble of heart” (Mt 11:29). “In your relations with one another, clothe yourselves with humility, because God ‘is stern with the arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness.’ Bow humbly under God’s mighty hand” (1 Pt 5:5-6). Humble yourself (Mt 23:12; Lk 14:11; 18:14).

Prayer: Jesus, You humbled Yourself even to death on the cross (Phil 2:8). Teach me humility.

Promise: "I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east." —Ez 43:2

Praise: St. Bernard helped establish the now-famous monastery at Clairvaux, France. Clairvaux means "Valley of Light." This is fitting since Bernard is remembered for his clear and insightful teaching.

“WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE” - One Bread, One Body, 08/19/2022

"WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE"
"The hand of the Lord came upon me, and He led me out in the spirit of the Lord and set me in the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones. He made me walk among them in every direction so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain." —Ezekiel 37:1-2

Pope St. John Paul II called our Western culture a “culture of death.” According to the prophet Ezekiel’s vision, we live on a plain of dry bones. However, some people are so brainwashed or naive that they don’t notice the death indicated by a few hundred thousand bones. These people are living in a fantasy land.

Others see the carnage and chaos, but are in denial. They say they are “innocent bystanders,” who have no responsibility to do anything other than their own thing. Still others are paralyzed by the immense brutality of the culture of death. They have become unforgiving, discouraged, depressed, bitter, cynical, or resentful.

Finally, others look beyond the culture of death and fix their eyes on Jesus, the Lord of all cultures (Heb 12:2). They are in love, even in the midst of death, and this love impels them (2 Cor 5:14) to live by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7). They obey the Lord and miraculously displace the culture of death with a “civilization of love.”

Are you in fantasy land, denial, paralysis, or love? Love is stronger than death (see Sg 8:6). “Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind” (Mt 22:37).

Prayer: Father, I will abide in love and in You (1 Jn 4:16).

Promise: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." —Mt 22:39

Praise: St. John Eudes had the gift of preaching. He later determined the best way to win souls was by forming zealous priests. He also encouraged devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

COME TO GOD'S LOVE FEAST
"The reign of God may be likened to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son." —Matthew 22:2

The kingdom of heaven is a love feast. This morning, I went to the ultimate wedding feast, the Holy Mass. Then I went to breakfast with my son and his fiancée. To dine with an engaged couple who are newly in love was a reminder of the heavenly wedding feast. My morning was a microcosm of the kingdom of God: being surrounded by love and joy forever.

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, the most common comparison of the relationship of God and His people is a wedding (Hos 2:21ff; Mt 22:2; Rv 21:2). Jesus’ first sign of His glory took place at a wedding (Jn 2:5-11).  In the Old Testament, we often hear “You shall be My people, and I will be your God” (see e.g. Ez 36:28). The marriage covenant between husband and wife is a reflection of the covenant between God and His people. God waits for us as a groom waits for his bride. Mysteriously, it’s as if our love was necessary for God’s happiness. There is plentiful suffering in this worldly valley of tears. How good it is to have tangible reminders of the fresh, all-consuming love of God (Heb 12:29). Love is the greatest gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 13:13). May the love of God sweep us off our feet and into the center of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Who is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16).

The future is an eternal wedding feast of the Lamb of God. Will we be prepared or will we be found not suitably dressed in a garment of righteousness? (Mt 22:11ff) Devote yourself to the wedding feast of God on earth, the Mass, the meeting of heaven and earth. Go to Mass as often as possible, even daily.

Prayer: Father, may I fall in love with You all over again. Let my life reflect Your love to many thousands of people.

Promise: "I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you." —Ez 36:26

Praise: Dr. Jones stays faithful to Church teaching by refusing to prescribe birth control pills.

GOOD SHEPHERDS?
"Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves!" —Ezekiel 34:2

We see in today’s Gospel parable the effects of a shepherd pasturing himself. Some faithful laborers worked a full day in the Lord’s service, but at the end of the day, they focused on “what’s in it for me,” such as assuming they would get a greater reward (see Mt 20:10ff). This focus is understandable from a human viewpoint. But Jesus teaches that it’s not to be the focus of His disciples. If we fix our eyes on what we get rather than on what Jesus gets, we are in danger of “pasturing ourselves,” rather than focusing on the sheep (see Ez 34:10).

Jesus wants us to focus on the welfare of the sheep and on the generous love of the Master rather than focusing on our own welfare. By focusing on the sacrificial love of the Good Shepherd, we take our eyes off ourselves and “fix [our] eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1; see also 12:2). By focusing on the welfare of the sheep, we lay down our lives for our friends, not for ourselves (Jn 15:13). By serving others, we also serve Jesus, not ourselves (Mt 25:40).

Repent of any ways in which you might be pasturing yourself, in which you might be concerned with your own interests rather than those of Jesus (Phil 2:21). The shepherd loves his sheep and pours out his life for them (Jn 10:11). Let’s pour out our lives as a sacrificial offering for the Master and His sheep. Let’s leave our reward in the most generous hands of the Lord.

Prayer: Father, give me the heart of the Good Shepherd.

Promise: "Beside restful waters He leads me; He refreshes my soul." —Ps 23:2-3

Praise: John used his retirement as a time to attend daily Mass and was often accompanied by his son.

WARNING! EXTREME DANGER!
"It is easier for a camel to pass through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." —Matthew 19:24

Many of us are middle-class Americans and consequently are among the richest people in the world. Therefore, Jesus’ words apply to us: “I assure you, only with difficulty will a rich man enter into the kingdom of God” (Mt 19:23). Although there is nothing wrong with being rich (see Sir 31:8-11), Jesus indicated that it was almost impossible (Mt 19:26) not to grow haughty from our riches (Ez 28:5). In the book of Proverbs, Agur prayed to not become rich “lest, being full,” he deny the Lord, “saying, ‘Who is the Lord?’ ”  (Prv 30:8, 9) Moses warned the Israelites in their prosperity to be careful not to “become haughty of heart and unmindful of the Lord” (Dt 8:14). Hosea observed that the more prosperous the Israelites were, the more involved they became in idolatry (Hos 10:1). Money, possessions, and wealth are a “temptation and a trap” (1 Tm 6:9), which are almost impossible not to fall into.

Pope St. John Paul II taught: “This super-development, which consists in an excessive availability of every kind of material goods for the benefit of certain social groups, easily makes people slaves of ‘possession’ and of immediate gratification” (On Social Concern, 28). The Pope concluded: “I therefore exhort the disciples of Christ and all Christian communities — from families to dioceses, from parishes to religious institutes — to carry out a sincere review of their lives regarding their solidarity with the poor” (Mission of the Redeemer, 60). “We need to turn to a more austere way of life” (Mission of the Redeemer, 59).

Prayer: Father, may I not carelessly expose myself to exceptionally dangerous temptations.

Promise: "For God all things are possible." —Mt 19:26

Praise: St. Stephen of Hungary wrote, "without [virtues] no one is fit to rule here on earth or attain to the heavenly kingdom."

THE DRAGON AND THE LADY
"Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth." —Revelation 12:4

The book of Revelation was composed about 90 AD. At this time the Church was being savagely persecuted by the Roman emperor, Domitian. Many had sacrificed their lives rather than deny Christ. However, others had sold out to the world and apostatized. These had lost their first love (Rv 2:4) and had become lukewarm to the point of nauseating Jesus (Rv 3:16). Of course, Satan accentuated the negative, accused the believers day and night (Rv 12:10), and continually intensified the pain, apostasy, and persecution of the times.

In opposition to Satan, there was “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (Rv 12:1). She refused to focus on evil but proclaimed “the greatness of the Lord” (Lk 1:46). She was not depressed but found joy in God her Savior (Lk 1:47). She was hopeful and confident that her enemies would be confused and deposed while the lowly would be raised to high places (Lk 1:51-52).

Who will you believe: Satan, that is, the dragon, or the woman, mother Church and mother Mary? Will you walk by faith or by sight? (2 Cor 5:7) Will you claim Jesus’ victory or accept defeat?

Prayer: Jesus, send Mary to greet me. At her greeting, may hope spring up inside me (see Lk 1:44).

Promise: "Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under His feet." —1 Cor 15:25

Praise: Mary's Assumption sheds light on her divine motherhood. She was destined from all eternity to be the Mother of God. Now she is reunited with her Son in heavenly glory (see Rv 12:1).

“No water, only mud” — is that a description of your life? Are you in a hole, sinking in the mud, starving to death spiritually? (see Jer 38:9) You need to add water to turn your mud into a mud puddle, and your mud puddle into a fountain of living waters (see Jn 4:14).

Most of us have already received the life-giving waters of Baptism, but we should renew our baptismal promises. We have already done that on Easter Sunday, but maybe we didn’t realize what we were doing or have stifled the Spirit since then (see 1 Thes 5:19). So let’s renew our baptismal promises and let the living waters flow and lift us out of the mud of sin.

Jesus proclaimed that He had a Baptism to receive (Lk 12:50). By this, He was referring to the Baptism in the bath of pain on Calvary (see Mk 10:38). When we renew our baptismal promises, we are also committing ourselves to suffer with Jesus and for love of Him. Aware of the suffering involved, renew your baptismal promises now. Reject Satan, his works, and his empty promises. Profess your faith in your loving Father; in Jesus as your Savior, Lord, and God; and in the Holy Spirit. Sprinkle yourself with holy water. Get out of the mud, out of sin, and out of prison. By faith, add water.

Prayer: Father, as the deer "longs for the running waters, so my soul longs for You, O God" (Ps 42:2)

Promise: "Remember how He endured the opposition of sinners; hence do not grow despondent or abandon the struggle." —Heb 12:3

Praise: Praise You, Jesus our Savior! Your love washes us clean, and You lead us to risen life. Alleluia!

HAND-ME-DOWN - One Bread, One Body, 08/13/2022

HAND-ME-DOWN
"Children were brought to Him so that He could place His hands on them in prayer." —Matthew 19:13

Jesus laid His hands on children and prayed for them. He holds children and the whole world in His hands. Jesus embraces us with His nail-scarred hands.

Hands are for:

  • praying,
  • holding our spouses and children,
  • embracing our brothers and sisters (see 1 Thes 5:26),
  • disciplining children (see Prv 13:24),
  • helping our neighbors,
  • honoring (applauding) others,
  • praising God (see Ps 134:2).

Hands are not for expressing:

  • anger,
  • impurity,
  • rejection.

Our hands will be instruments of righteousness and not weapons for evil (Rm 6:13) if we put our hands into the nail-scarred hands of Jesus. When we let Jesus take our hand, we are transformed as was Peter’s mother-in-law (Mk 1:31). The rough hands of Jesus the Carpenter change our hands and hearts. We take Jesus’ hand by believing in Him and obeying Him. We take Jesus’ hand by receiving Communion, forgiving our enemies, and extending our hands to “the least of the brethren” (see Mt 25:40). Take Jesus’ hand.

Prayer: Jesus, may I "give You a hand."

Promise: "I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies, says the Lord God. Return and live!" —Ez 18:32

Praise: Pope St. Pontian and St. Hippolytus did not agree on papal succession in the Church. However, they reconciled after being exiled to the island of Sardinia.

ALL NEW IN JESUS? - One Bread, One Body, 08/12/2022

Isaiah 12:2-6
Matthew 19:3-12

ALL NEW IN JESUS?
"I now say to you, whoever divorces his wife (lewd conduct is a separate case) and marries another commits adultery." —Matthew 19:9

Jesus came into the world and freed all human beings from sin by His death on the cross. He destroyed the devil’s works (1 Jn 3:8) by rising from the dead. Jesus gave us all the capacity of becoming sharers in the divine nature (2 Pt 1:4). Jesus made us adopted sons and daughters of God. “This means that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old order has passed away; now all is new!” (2 Cor 5:17)

Jesus has radically transformed everything, including all relationships. For example, marriage is no longer subject to divorce but is indissoluble. Those who have been united by the Lord in marriage cannot be separated (Mt 19:6). God has created an objective, unbreakable bond in marriage.

In Jesus, those single for His kingdom are not cursed or merely unmarried (Mt 19:12). Now single life in Jesus can be the greatest vocation of all, the vocation of Jesus, the most definitive sign of God’s heavenly kingdom (Lk 20:35ff).

Jesus has also revolutionized relationships with parents and children and especially with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Are you letting Jesus make all things new in all your relationships? (see 2 Cor 5:17) Are you accepting God’s grace to unfold your Baptism? Are you letting Jesus be Lord of your relationships by letting Him do anything He wants in your relationships? Let all your relationships be immersed in the newness of Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I not be B.C., but A.D. to the full.

Promise: "I will re-establish My covenant with you, that you may know that I am the Lord, that you may remember and be covered with confusion...when I pardon you for all you have done, says the Lord God." —Ez 16:62-63

Praise: St. Jane Frances was a wife, the mother of six children, a widow, a religious sister, and the founder, along with St. Francis de Sales, of a religious order, the Visitation nuns.

THE TRANSFORMING POWER OF GIVING

THE TRANSFORMING POWER OF GIVING
AND GIVING ALL
"He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully." —2 Corinthians 9:6

“In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides” (Mk 4:24). The Lord promises that we will never out-give Him. If we give bountifully, we will harvest more than we sow and receive more than we give. Then we are to give generously again and receive even more, spiritually and materially. After a few rounds of giving and then receiving more, we have significantly greater spiritual and material resources than before our rounds of giving and receiving. This may not always be obvious because spiritual resources are not visible and quantifiable as are material resources. Nonetheless, after repeated givings in the spirit of the Gospel, we definitely have much more to give (see Lk 8:18; 19:26).

The Lord calls us to give not only bountifully but totally to Him. He commands us to love Him with all our heart, all our soul, all our strength, and all our mind (Lk 10:27). This command to give all to Him may seem unreasonable until we focus on Jesus’ death on the cross. At the foot of the cross, we see the command to give all to Jesus as a privilege of love, not as a burden. We give all to the Lord. Then we find that not only are our resources transformed, we are transformed. We are no longer our old selves of selfishness; we are new creations in the love of Jesus. Therefore, accept the grace to give all to Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I get into Your spirit of giving.

Promise: "The man who loves his life loses it, while the man who hates his life in this world preserves it to life eternal." —Jn 12:25

Praise: St. Lawrence, an ordained deacon, was martyred on August 10, 258. Lawrence, along with the Apostles Peter and Paul, is a patron of the city of Rome.

“TASTE AND SEE” (Ps 34:9) - One Bread, One Body, 08/09/2022

"TASTE AND SEE" (Ps 34:9)
"Be not rebellious like this house of rebellion, but open your mouth and eat what I shall give you." —Ezekiel 2:8

Picture a baby in a highchair. No matter what the parents do, the baby refuses to eat, shutting its mouth. That is the picture of many Christians today. We Christians are spiritually anorexic. We refuse to eat what God gives us because we are stuffed with the things the world has brainwashed us into eating (see Prv 13:19). The food of the “feel-good culture,” materialism and consumerism, is much more appetizing to us than God’s scroll with “lamentation and wailing and woe” written all over it (Ez 2:10).

However, the Lord is commanding us to repent of our eating habits and of anorexia. He commands: “Be as eager for milk as newborn babies — pure milk of the Spirit to make you grow unto salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Pt 2:2-3). The Lord warns us: “Not on bread alone is man to live but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God” (Mt 4:4; Dt 8:3). He commands: “Take this and eat it...this is My body” (Mt 26:26).

Eat what God puts before you, and don’t take candy from strangers. “Taste and see how good the Lord is; happy the man who takes refuge in Him” (Ps 34:9).

Prayer: Father, may I eat right.

Promise: "How sweet to my palate are Your promises, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" —Ps 119:103

Praise: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was a Polish Jew who converted to Catholicism in her early twenties. She joined the Carmelites and was moved to the Netherlands where she and her sister were arrested by the Nazis. They were killed in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942.
