HIGH LIFE
"They stood before the throne and the Lamb, dressed in long white robes and holding palm branches in their hands." —Revelation 7:9

The saints stand “before the throne and the Lamb.” This applies both to saints on earth and in heaven, for we on earth “have our citizenship in heaven” (Phil 3:20). Although our bodies are not in heaven, our citizenship is, “since [we] have been raised up in company with Christ” (Col 3:1). We became saints when we were raised up with Christ in Baptism. We live as saints and grow in sanctity when we set our hearts “on what pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God’s right hand” (Col 3:1). We are “intent on things above rather than on things of earth” (Col 3:2).

Living as saints means living with our hearts set on “higher realms.” Where is your heart, mind, and spirit? Are you earth-bound in the affairs of this world or standing around God’s throne in praise? Are you aware of having your citizenship in heaven? “It is from there that we eagerly await the coming of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Phil 3:20).

To be saints with our spirits in heaven, we must totally give our lives to Jesus, renew our baptismal promises, and repent of our sins. Then we will live in “higher realms.”

Prayer: Father, may I enter Your throne room with praise and thanksgiving (Ps 100:4).

Promise: "Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is great." —Mt 5:12

Praise: "Worthy are You to receive the scroll and break open its seals, for You were slain. With Your blood You purchased for God men of every race and tongue, of every people and nation" (Rv 5:9).

DON'T BUDGE
"Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm." —Ephesians 6:11

We Christians “put on the armor of God so that” we “may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil” (Eph 6:11). Our goal in battle is to hold our ground and stand fast (Eph 6:13-14). The devil’s goal in battle is to get us to move away from the place to which God has called us so he can manipulate us.

If we are in the right place at the right time, we are anointed with the power of God. In that God-given place, we are invincible if we remain in a state of grace. Accordingly, the devil’s goal is to deceive, push, and pressure us to give an inch. When we are out of place, even slightly, we no longer draw our “strength from the Lord and His mighty power” (Eph 6:10), but are on our own. Relying on ourselves, we are no match for the devil, and we can’t even claim the victory Jesus has already won (see Jn 15:5).

For example, the devil tried to get Jesus to give an inch. Certain Pharisees told Jesus: “Leave this place! Herod is trying to kill You” (Lk 13:31). But Jesus refused to deviate in even the slightest way from doing His Father’s will. Finally, while hanging in crucified agony, Jesus was tempted to come down from the cross (Mt 27:40). He refused to budge and thereby conquered the evil one. “Hold your ground” (Eph 6:13).

Prayer: Father, may I never let the evil spirit move me, and may I always let the Holy Spirit move me!

Promise: "At every opportunity pray in the Spirit, using prayers and petitions of every sort. Pray constantly and attentively for all in the holy company." —Eph 6:18

Praise: Jesus set Robert free from a twenty-year drinking problem.

THE SPIRIT OF SUBMISSION
"Slaves, obey your human masters with the reverence, the awe, and the sincerity you owe to Christ." —Ephesians 6:5

Everyone should submit to each other (Eph 5:21). Wives should submit to husbands (Eph 5:22), children to parents (Eph 6:1), and employees to employers (Eph 6:5). Those in authority should submit to the Lord (see Eph 6:4, 9). The Lord wants to create an entire culture of submission.

If we accept God’s call to be submissive in circumstance after circumstance, we will open ourselves to being filled with the Spirit. The beginning of this teaching on submission in Ephesians is verse 5:21. Although this verse looks like a sentence in some translations, it is a participial phrase in the original. Verse 21 is subordinated to the main verb in the sentence, which is “be filled” (with the Holy Spirit) in 5:18. In the original Greek, the Lord is saying that we must live lives of submission if we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

The Blessed Virgin Mary received the Holy Spirit after calling herself God’s handmaid (Lk 1:38). Those who received the Spirit at the first Christian Pentecost humbled themselves in asking: “What are we to do?” (Acts 2:37) Twelve Ephesian men received the Spirit after they humbly admitted that they had never heard of the Spirit (Acts 19:2). Cornelius and his household received the Spirit after Cornelius prostrated himself in submission to Peter (Acts 10:25). The Spirit descended on Jesus when He submitted Himself to John’s baptism (Mt 3:14-15). Life in submission leads to life in the Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I love You by submitting myself to those whom You have given authority over me.

Promise: "Try to come in through the narrow door." —Lk 13:24

Praise: Despite his terminal cancer, Father John continued to perform as much of his ministry to his parishioners as possible.

MEN OF LOVE
"Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church. He gave Himself up for her." —Ephesians 5:25

The secular culture chokes on the opening of today’s first reading, “Wives should be submissive to their husbands” (Eph 5:22). Yet that is not the most radical sentence of this passage. St. Paul’s call for husbands to love their wives as Jesus loves the Church (Eph 5:25) is an extraordinarily radical challenge, both for the culture of Paul’s time and for every age since.

In Paul’s time, wives were considered the property of the husband and had no rights at all. Yet Paul commanded husbands to lay down their lives for their wives, to care for them as they cared for their own body (Eph 5:28-29), as Christ loves the Church (Eph 5:25). How does Jesus love the Church? He says to the Church: “This is My body, to be given up for you” (see 1 Cor 11:24). To love his wife in this way means that the husband says to his wife: “This is my body, to be given up for you.”

Jesus asks in today’s Gospel passage: “What does the reign of God resemble?” (Lk 13:18) The kingdom of God is like the radical love of a husband who loves his wife as Jesus loves the Church. He literally lays down his life — his interests, schedule, hopes, dreams — for her welfare. He walks to the cross for her. He honors, nourishes, and provides for her. He uplifts her, as Jesus does for His Church. He spiritually leads her, teaches her, and loves her. He leads and teaches the children they bring into the world.

Yes, the world will notice a husband who loves his wife like this. The people in the world, seeing this married love, will realize that Jesus loves them (Eph 5:32).

Prayer: Father, raise up husbands and wives who will lead the way in evangelization through love, hospitality, and making and raising disciples for You (Mt 28:19-20).

Promise: "Happy are you who fear the Lord." —Ps 128:1

Praise: Kevin reconciled with his wife and their marriage lasted until death.

APOSTLES OF TRUTH
Jesus "went out to the mountain to pray, spending the night in communion with God. At daybreak He called His disciples and selected twelve of them to be His apostles." —Luke 6:12-13

How do we know which books are in the Bible? The Church has been given the authority to say which books are in the Bible. How do we know which church is the true Church? The Church, which can trace its origins back to the apostles, is the true Church because Jesus founded it on the apostles (Eph 2:20; Lk 6:13; Rv 21:14). Therefore, without the apostolicity of the Church, we would not know which books are in the Bible.

Many holy and learned Christians sincerely don’t believe that Jesus gives us His Body and Blood in Holy Communion. Other Christians believe that Jesus literally meant “This is My Body” and “This is My Blood” (Mt 26:26, 28). Who is right? The Church alone is “the pillar and bulwark of truth” (1 Tm 3:15) and can decide this matter and thousands of other disagreements about interpreting the Bible. Once again, however, we must be able to recognize the true Church. The Church founded by Jesus is recognized by its apostolicity.

Because the apostolicity of the Church has such mammoth ramifications, we celebrate in a special way the feasts of the apostles, including today’s feast of St. Simon and St. Jude. Today, we celebrate the true Church and its authority in service to the truth.

Prayer: Father, may the truth set me free (Jn 8:32).

Promise: "In Him you are being built into this temple, to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit." —Eph 2:22

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, for "the prophetic words of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Jude 17)

AN EYE-OPENING NOVENA
" 'Rabboni,' the blind man said, 'I want to see.' Jesus said in reply, 'Be on your way! Your faith has healed you.' Immediately he received his sight and started to follow Him up the road." —Mark 10:51-52

To live God’s Word (see Jas 1:22), we must pray God’s Word. I invite you to pray a novena to be free from spiritual blindness. For nine days, pray: “I want to see” (Mk 10:51).

Most Christians believe that other people, including their spouses, family members, neighbors, and fellow workers, need to see much better spiritually. The sin, injustice, abortion, racism, and oppression in our culture of death prove that we live in an epidemic of spiritual blindness. Nevertheless, we find it difficult to believe that we are spiritually blind or even that we have planks in our eyes while others may have only specks in theirs (Mt 7:5). We are tempted to react like the Pharisees when they said to Jesus: “You are not calling us blind, are You?” (Jn 9:40)

You may be so holy that you are not spiritually blind. Yet are you certain that you have 20/20 vision spiritually? If you’re blind to being blind, you are trapped. If you’re not sure you have 20/20 spiritual vision, pray the novena to be freed from spiritual blindness. Try to go to Mass daily or as often as possible. Go to Confession. Pray daily: “I want to see.” Invite others to join you. Write and tell us the good news.

Prayer: Father, in this novena teach me about myself.

Promise: "I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst." —Jer 31:8

Praise: Praise Jesus, our risen Lord and Love! Alleluia!

CHILDREN NO MORE
"Be children no longer." —Ephesians 4:14

We Christians are called to be child-like, not childish (1 Cor 14:20). Being childish means being “tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine that originates in human trickery and skill in proposing error” (Eph 4:14). It means being manipulated and enslaved.

The way to freedom from childishness is to profess the truth in love (Eph 4:15). The truth will set us free (Jn 8:32) and help us “grow to the full maturity of Christ the Head” (Eph 4:15).

We grow up and grow out of childishness by obeying apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastor-teachers who will equip us for the work of service to build up the Body of Christ (Eph 4:11-12). Thus, the truth that sets us free from childishness is not just general spiritual information; it is the truth that prepares us for full-time service to Christ and His Body. This is the call of all baptized people.

Furthermore, the truth that frees and equips us for service is based on the Bible, as handed on to us by the Catholic Church. “All Scripture is inspired of God and is useful for teaching — for reproof, correction, and training in holiness so that the man of God may be fully competent and equipped for every good work” (2 Tm 3:16-17).

Therefore, study and know God’s Word in the Scriptures to prepare for God’s service, or else live the enslaved, confused life of a child. Grow up or be manipulated. It’s the Bible and God’s service, or confusion and darkness. “Let us, then, be children no longer” (Eph 4:14).

Prayer: Father, may I give You reason to rejoice in my growth. May I be "fully mature and lacking in nothing" (Jas 1:4).

Promise: "Through [Jesus] the whole body grows, and with the proper functioning of the members joined firmly together by each supporting ligament, builds itself up in love." —Eph 4:16

Praise: The Walker family raised several sons who became priests and several daughters who became religious sisters.

THE SEVENFOLD UNITY
"Make every effort to preserve the unity." —Ephesians 4:3

From prison, St. Paul pleaded with his Christian brothers and sisters to “live a life worthy” of their calling (Eph 4:1). This meant being humble, meek, long-suffering, and lovingly forbearing (Eph 4:2). This radically different way of life was necessary to preserve and deepen the early Church’s unity in the Spirit (Eph 4:3). “There is but one body and one Spirit, just as there is but one hope...There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all” (Eph 4:4-6). This sevenfold unity is necessary for our lives to be worthy of our calling by the Lord.

Jesus is continuing to pray that we be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Despite hundreds of years of disunity among the various Christian denominations, despite millions of divorces, despite an all too frequent disregard for a practical living out of our baptismal brotherhood and sisterhood, despite the utter divisiveness and disunity of sin, the Lord will never change (see Mal 3:6; Heb 13:8). He wants us to be in unity with Him and with each other (see 1 Cor 1:10). We must be united even if we have to die for it, because He already has died for it (Jn 11:51-52).

Repent! Live a worthy, humble life of unity.

Prayer: Jesus, only You can unite Your body. Hide each of us in the center of Your Sacred Heart, so we can become one in You.

Promise: "There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, Who is over all, and works through all, and is in all." —Eph 4:5-6

THE POWER UNKNOWN
"May He strengthen you inwardly through the working of His Spirit." —Ephesians 3:16

When the Holy Spirit came to us in Baptism, Confirmation, and other occasions, we received power (Acts 1:8). In fact, we were clothed from head to toe with power from on high (Lk 24:49). We can move mountains with only a tiny use of our power (Mt 17:20). Nothing is impossible for us in the power of Jesus (Mt 17:20).

A problem for Christians is not that we need more power but that we need to open the eyes of our hearts to know “the immeasurable scope of His power in us who believe” (Eph 1:19) and use it.

The Holy Spirit, Who has given us a share in His power, will also open our eyes to this power. Therefore, renew your Baptism and Confirmation. Repent of quenching the Holy Spirit (1 Thes 5:19). Stir into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit (2 Tm 1:6-7). Praise “to Him Whose power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine” (Eph 3:20). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, may I use the power You have given me to save lives, evangelize, restore families, and build a new civilization of love and life.

Promise: "Thus you will be able to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love." —Eph 3:18

Praise: St. Anthony Claret wrote: "The man who burns with the fire of divine love is a son of the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

"TOO MUCH"? (Mk 6:3)
"When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted." —Luke 12:48

Jesus makes it very clear in today’s Gospel reading that He expects His disciples to continue to bear ever-increasing fruit. “This sort of talk is hard to endure!” (Jn 6:60) Do we, as His disciples, find this divine expectation of “much” and “more”  (Lk 12:48) to be “too much” for us? (Mk 6:3) “Does it shake your faith?” (Jn 6:61) Or does Jesus’ challenge prompt you to receive still more responsibilities and get stretched and enlarged (see Acts 20:32) to become a more significant vessel for Him? (2 Tm 2:21) If so, you are allowing Jesus to do His will in and through you.

Are you willing to pay the price to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world? Are you willing to be entrusted with much, more, and still more? Jesus trusts you. Will you trust Him? Fr. Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, said near the end of his life, “The more I say ‘No’ to myself, the more I say ‘Yes’ to the Holy Spirit.” Trust the Lord to keep pouring out the love and power of the Holy Spirit in your heart (Rm 5:5). Live in Jesus and bear abundant fruit (Jn 15:5, 8).

Prayer: Father, give me the enthusiasm, zeal, and fruitfulness of St. John of Capistrano.

Promise: "Now, therefore, through the church, God's manifold wisdom is made known." —Eph 3:10

Praise: St. John of Capistrano is said to have practiced penance by riding through his town wearing a paper hat with his sins written on it.

JESUS THE SAVIOR: OUR HOPE, OUR LORD, OUR GOD!
"But now in Christ Jesus..." —Ephesians 2:13

Almost everyone reading One Bread, One Body is a Gentile, that is, not Jewish. In the Bible, we Gentiles were described as:

  • having “no part in Christ” (Eph 2:12),
  • “excluded from the community of Israel” (Eph 2:12),
  • “strangers to the covenant and its promise” (Eph 2:12), and
  • “without hope and without God in the world” (Eph 2:12).

“But now in Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:13), we Gentiles:

  • “have been brought near through the blood of Christ” (Eph 2:13),
  • have been reconciled to God “in one body through His cross” (Eph 2:16),
  • “have access in one Spirit to the Father” (Eph 2:18),
  • “are strangers and aliens no longer” (Eph 2:19),
  • “are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God” (Eph 2:19),
  • “form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the Capstone” (Eph 2:20),
  • are “a holy temple in the Lord” (Eph 2:21), and
  • are “a dwelling place for God in the Spirit” (Eph 2:22).

Jesus has changed our nature and changed our future. He has changed us from weeping in the night to rejoicing with the dawn (Ps 30:6). He has changed our mourning into dancing (Ps 30:12). He has changed our lives from living death (see 1 Jn 3:14) into eternal life. Thank Jesus. Love Jesus. Worship Jesus. Live and die for Jesus.

Prayer: "Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All!"

Promise: "It will go well with those servants whom the Master finds wide-awake on His return." —Lk 12:37

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II was born in Poland, came of age under the Nazi regime, and attended an underground seminary. He became the first non-Italian pope in 455 years.

WHAT MATTERS TO GOD (Lk 12:21)
"...instead of growing rich in what matters to God."—Luke 12:21, RNAB

Jesus instructed the crowds to grow rich in what matters to God (Lk 12:21). How can we know what matters to God?

Through His Word, God has shown us what matters to Him:

  • love of God and love of neighbor (Lk 10:27).
  • mercy rather than sacrifice (Mt 9:13). Mercy matters greatly to God, for He is “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4).
  • “justice and the love of God” (Lk 11:42), particularly for the poor, orphaned, and widowed (Gal 2:10; Jas 1:27).
  • “obedient faith” (Rm 1:5).
  • worship in spirit and truth (Jn 4:23-24).
  • that we all be one in Christ (Jn 17:21; cf 1 Cor 1:10).
  • holiness (1 Pt 1:16) and purity (1 Jn 3:3).
  • life to the full (Jn 10:10).
  • eternal life (Jn 3:16).

You matter to God so much that Jesus suffered and died so you could be saved for eternal life with Him. Study the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn more about what matters to God. God sent Jesus to us to reveal what He considers important so that we might be prepared for Judgment Day. Grow rich in what matters to God, so you can spend eternity with Him.

Prayer: Father, may I spend this life both growing rich in what matters to You and in obeying Your will.

Promise: "It is owing to [God's] favor that salvation is yours through faith." —Eph 2:8

Praise: Josh and Alice expressed their faith in Jesus by adopting several children.

TAKING IT PERSONALLY
"The Lord was pleased to crush Him in infirmity." —Isaiah 53:10

Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be “pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins” (Is 53:5). Jesus was crushed because “the Lord laid upon Him the guilt of us all” (Is 53:6). One person’s guilt can cause him or her to collapse (see Hos 14:2) or even be crushed. Imagine (if you can) all the weight of all the guilt of all sins of every person who has lived or will ever live. Imagine this weight pressing upon one person at one time. Then you can understand why “so marred was [Jesus’] look beyond that of man, and His appearance beyond that of mortals” (Is 52:14). Jesus suffered on the cross more than can ever be imagined.

Jesus died because of our sins. Consequently, each of us is partly responsible for Jesus’ brutal death (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). Nevertheless, Jesus suffered dreadfully and died for each of us personally. Therefore, the least we can do is to:

  • live lives of thanksgiving to our crucified Savior,
  • love Him “with all [our] heart, with all [our] soul, with all [our] strength, and with all [our] mind” (Lk 10:27),
  • tell as many people as possible about the One Who has loved us even to death on the cross (see Phil 2:8), and
  • be willing to die a martyr’s death in imitation of Jesus.

When a person comes to the realization that he or she partly caused Jesus’ death and was perfectly loved by Jesus in His death, that person lives no longer for himself, “but for Him Who for their sakes died and was raised up” (2 Cor 5:15). Enter the new life of the crucified Jesus (Gal 2:19).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit so that I will take Jesus' crucifixion and death personally.

Promise: "The Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve — to give His life in ransom for the many." —Mk 10:45

Praise: "Give to the Lord, you families of nations, give to the Lord glory and praise; give to the Lord the glory due His name!" (Ps 96:7-8)

LAWYER FOR THE DEFENSE
"The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said." —Luke 12:12

We can hear what God has to say (Ps 85:9). Often this hearing is initiated by opening our mouth to speak or lifting our pen to write. The Spirit teaches us as we step out to speak or to write. The Spirit is the Paraclete (Jn 14:16, 26), a term which can also be translated as Lawyer for the Defense. When you have an expert lawyer, your best strategy is to be quiet and let that lawyer speak for you. How tragic it would be to have the best lawyer and then to not allow him or her to defend you properly. This is called stifling the Spirit. “Do not stifle the Spirit” (1 Thes 5:19).

We naturally want to know the entire message before we speak or write. But often the Spirit moves in us as we begin to speak or write. God receives glory when it’s obvious that He is speaking through us, for we are not able to have such wisdom. The Holy Spirit gave Sts. Peter and John “self-assurance” when they were being interrogated by the Sanhedrin (Acts 4:13). Those who heard them speak were amazed because these two apostles were “uneducated men of no standing” (Acts 4:13). At their testimony, the powerful leaders of the Sanhedrin “could think of nothing to say” (Acts 4:14).  Similarly, instead of us Spirit-led Christians being tongue-tied, our accusers won’t be able to speak.

Through the Spirit, God will give us “words and a wisdom which none of [our] adversaries can take exception to or contradict” (Lk 21:15). “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to rely on You rather than on my own understanding (Prv 3:5-6).

Promise: "Whoever acknowledges Me before men — the Son of Man will acknowledge him before the angels of God." —Lk 12:8

Praise: St. Isaac Jogues administered the Sacrament of Baptism to several Iriquois who had earlier attempted to kill him.

BRING THE GOSPELS
"I have no one with me but Luke. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he can be of great service to me." —2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke was “with” St. Paul (2 Tm 4:11). Luke, a physician, accompanied Paul on parts of several missionary journeys. Paul suffered from multiple physical ailments (see 2 Cor 11:23-27) and could have benefitted from having a doctor with him. When writing the Acts of the Apostles, Luke’s narrative changes from “they” to “we” in several places (Acts 16:10-17; 20:5-15; 21:1-18; 27:1—28:16). This is considered by scholars as evidence that Luke was with Paul at those times (2 Tm 4:11).

Luke can be with you also. You can have Luke with you by carrying a Bible with you. That way, you will “get Mark” also (2 Tm 4:11), as well as John and Matthew. Like St. Paul, bring the “parchments” (2 Tm 4:13), on which were written the Scriptures. It is easier than ever to bring Luke with you. Bring your Bible to church, to work, to the park, to your friends, to meals.

Now consider that Luke not only gave us a Gospel, but also the Acts of the Apostles. Jesus and the Father poured out the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and the Spirit is with us always. Luke urges us to receive the Holy Spirit and operate in the gifts and power of the Spirit.

Today, on this feast day of St. Luke, spend at least fifteen minutes reading from the Gospel of Luke or the Acts of the Apostles. Let Luke be “with you.”

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to hunger for Your Word more than for daily meals (Mt 4:4).

Promise: "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth." —Ps 145:18

Praise: St. Luke "carefully traced the whole sequence of events" in the life of Jesus and the growth of the Church. Because of his care and discernment, we know about the Annunciation, the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the good thief, Pentecost, and the growth of the Church. Praise You, Jesus, for the life of Luke!

BLESSINGS AND PRAISE
"Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has bestowed on us in Christ every spiritual blessing in the heavens! God chose us in Him before the world began, to be holy and blameless in His sight." —Ephesians 1:3-4

Holy and blameless — this is how God sees us in Christ. A great blessing of being in Christ is that not only can we approach God, but He dwells within us! (Jn 6:56; 17:23) Another great spiritual blessing is that the Holy Spirit is the first Installment of our inheritance with God (Eph 1:14). In addition to these blessings, God has bestowed on us “every spiritual blessing” (Eph 1:3).

How can we respond to God for these blessings? Praise is the response, because blessing and praise go together (Rv 5:12, 13; 7:12). Praise God with everything you’ve got. Sing and praise with greater enthusiasm than you have at your favorite sporting event. God is in the spotlight of your praise, receiving everything that you have to give. “Sing joyfully to the Lord…break into song; sing praise…sing joyfully before the King, the Lord” (Ps 98:4-6).

There are various ways to praise and worship God:

  • in joyous singing (Ps 95:1-2),
  • by lifting our hands to Him (Ps 63:5),
  • by giving to others (Lk 6:38) and to God (Mal 3:10) beyond measure,
  • in telling others about God’s kindness (Ps 63:4),
  • in quiet meditation (Ps 119:97; Mt 6:6), and
  • on our knees (Ps 95:6).

God gives us every blessing. Give Him every praise!

Prayer: Father, give me the grace and the desire to praise You like I never have before.

Promise: "It is in Christ and through His blood that we have been redeemed and our sins forgiven." —Eph 1:7

Praise: St. Ignatius of Antioch advised: "Turn a deaf ear to the talk of anyone whose language has nothing to do with Jesus Christ."

THE DIFFICULT SCRIPTURE VERSE
"Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's lead." —Galatians 5:25

Sometimes you will find that most of the verses of the Scripture passages for Mass each day are acceptable even to pagans, secular humanists, and fallen-away Catholics. For example, in today’s Gospel reading, Jesus points out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and tells the Bible lawyers not to burden people without helping them (Lk 11:43-46). Many anti-Christians certainly agree with Jesus on these two points. In today’s reading from Galatians, the fruit of the Spirit is described as love, joy, and peace (Gal 5:22). Almost everyone believes in love, joy, and peace, although they may define these words differently than Christians do. However, many non-Christians and even some Christians rabidly reject “something” in the daily Scripture readings. If we obey the Lord in these difficult passages, then we are truly following the Spirit’s lead (Gal 5:25).

For most Christians, the difficult Scripture verse for today is Galatians 5:24: “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.” The Lord commands us to accept His grace so we will have crucified flesh, crucified passions, and crucified desires. Although some people believe in toning down the flesh and not following every whim (see Eph 2:3), the idea of “crucified flesh” smacks of extremism and fanaticism to those programmed by our secular humanistic “culture of death.” Here’s where the real Christians stand up. Obey even the difficult verses, live by the Spirit, and follow the Spirit’s lead. Obey Galatians 5:24 and 5:25.

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to convict the world about sin (Jn 16:8) and to crucify me to the world (Gal 6:14).

Promise: "In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity." —Gal 5:22-23

Praise: St. Hedwig remained faithful to her husband even though she suffered much from his quarrelsomeness.

CLEAN WALLET AND CLEAN HEART
"If you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." –Luke 11:41

The Pharisees were avaricious men (Lk 16:14). The word avaricious means “very greedy.” They loved money and power. They did not love people, however. A leading Pharisee invited Jesus to dinner on a Sabbath, and deliberately placed a man suffering from dropsy “directly in front of” Jesus at the table. Dropsy is a painful, bloated condition in which water is retained in the person’s arms and legs. This seating arrangement was a blatant trap set by the Pharisees to bait Jesus into healing on the Sabbath. After Jesus healed the man, He sent the man home (Lk 14:4), which indicates that the suffering man was not invited to partake of the meal, but was merely a pawn used by the Pharisees to entrap the Lord. Jesus loved the man and healed him; the Pharisees did not care about this man, but only about money and power. On another occasion, the Pharisees led a woman caught in adultery to Jesus (Jn 8:3ff). The Pharisees didn't care if this woman were to be killed, as long as she could be used to trap Jesus and preserve their power. Jesus wanted them to love these suffering people, and not love money.

The Pharisees were enslaved to greed and power. Jesus came to set free those who were enslaved (see Lk 4:18). He loved the Pharisees and offered them an opportunity to be truly free from their slavery to greed (see Gal 5:1). So He told them to give what they had as alms, and all would be wiped clean for them (Lk 11:41). They would have known the value of almsgiving from the archangel Raphael’s admonition to Tobit (see Tb 12:8-10), but they needed to take concrete action. For the Pharisees to give alms meant that they could grow more detached from money and begin caring about the poor to whom they were giving the alms.

What about you? Are you tempted to love your money more than you love the poor? Follow Jesus’ advice. Give alms and be wiped clean (Lk 11:41).

Prayer: Jesus, set me free my attachments so I will love You and love the poor and lowly.

Promise: "It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!" –Gal 5:1

Praise: St. Teresa of Jesus, from Avila, Spain, prayed daily for the coming of the Holy Spirit in her life.

THE SIGN IS THE LENGTH OF THE LINE
"This is an evil age. It seeks a sign. But no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah." —Luke 11:29

To the Pharisees who wanted a dazzling, miraculous sign, Jesus offered the sign of Jonah (Lk 11:29). What was the sign of Jonah? It was a sign of the Resurrection of Jesus. Jonah was buried in the water in the belly of a large fish, and was delivered safely to land on the third day (Jon 2:1, 11). The sign of Jonah was also the sign of repentance. The entire population of the wicked city of Nineveh, 120,000 people, repented upon hearing the prophetic word of Jonah (Jon 3:4ff).

One of the greatest signs of God’s saving action is a repentant heart. To see 120,000 repentant hearts was a phenomenal sign that was difficult to miss. In Jesus’ time, tax collectors and prostitutes, the most public of sinners, were repenting and turning to the Lord. Nonetheless, the Pharisees missed this sign, even when Jesus pointed it out to them (Mt 21:31).

Perhaps many do not notice the Lord working in the present time because they don’t see people repenting of their sins and changing their lives. If repentant sinners are the sign that could bring people to God (see Lk 15:7), then let’s repent and get in line for Confession. Lengthen the line for Confession by repenting of your sins and inviting others to Confession. Be a sign. “Be earnest about it, therefore. Repent!” (Rv 3:19)

Prayer: Father, create in me a clean heart (Ps 51:12) so that I might be a life-long minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18).

Promise: It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!" —Gal 5:1

Praise: Pope St. Callistus I was a humble slave. God exalted him (Mt 23:12) and he eventually ascended to the office of Pope. As Pope, Callistus exalted Jesus and vigorously defended His divinity.

"ONE THING"
"There is one thing more you must do." —Mark 10:21

In today’s Gospel passage, a rich man asked what he must do to share in eternal life (Mk 10:17). He had done much, but Jesus told him to do “one thing more” (Mk 10:21). That was the one thing standing between himself and the eternal life he desired. That one thing more was to sell what he possessed, give the proceeds to the poor, and follow Jesus (Mk 10:21). This the rich man could not do and he “went away sad” (Mk 10:22).

Through His Word, God has given us much wisdom (Wis 7:7-11) to know what our one thing might be. It behooves us, then, to be grounded in the Word of God. God’s Word is alive (Heb 4:12). The Word convicts us (Heb 4:12-13) and brings constantly to our mind that one thing more God wants us to yield to Him.

Mary of Bethany found the one thing Jesus wanted her to do: to sit at His feet and listen to His Word (see Lk 10:39). Jesus approved Mary’s action and confirmed it by saying: “one thing only is required” (Lk 10:42).

“One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, that I may gaze on the loveliness of the Lord and contemplate His temple” (Ps 27:4). Give Jesus that one thing that separates you from following Him completely.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, take not just one thing from me, but take everything. Give me only Your love and Your grace.

Promise: "All gold, in view of [Wisdom], is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire." —Wisdom 7:9

Praise: Risen Jesus, praise be to You, my God and my All.
